As you may have noticed, we are more
than partial to a little Punk in this neck of
the woods, and one of the bands that
really get the pulse bip-bipping is the
rather brilliant Burnt Tapes. Having left
their native Greece and moved to London
(and I have to say I love the fact it is to
avoid conscription – if only Elvis had done
that he may not have made all those crap
films) they have managed to carve out a
space for themselves with a series of top
quality support slots and a couple of
previous E.Ps that well and truly put them
on the map. With ‘Alterations’ their new
E.P which launches on June 2 nd , you feel
that this is really their moment to take
that next step up and really open some
eyes. The first song to be released from
the E.P, ‘Oh Marie’ does exactly that and
is one of the most powerful, raw songs
I’ve heard in ages – really something
quite special and one that can travel a lot
further than the usual Punk market as the
band have the ability to write proper
songs with more light and shade than you
would expect. In a way they remind me
of New Model Army, which from me is
quite the compliment.
As vocalist/bassist, Tone Apostolopoulos
explains,
“The title of the EP ‘Alterations’ is
inspired by the changes that occur in
your life as you start to approach the
end of your 20s, and how you begin to
lose people, either physically or
through disconnection. Phil
(vocals/guitar) lost his grandma a
month before recording and the track
is dedicated to her”.
