MARCONI CALINDAS - ARTIST - ADVOCATE FOR<br />
EQUALITY AND JUSTICE<br />
Marconi Cal<strong>in</strong>das has a work<strong>in</strong>g studio<br />
gallery <strong>in</strong> the Backstreet Art District that<br />
was featured <strong>in</strong> last <strong>week</strong>’s article. Marconi<br />
works <strong>in</strong> acrylic pa<strong>in</strong>t on flat surfaces but is<br />
also creat<strong>in</strong>g sculptural art us<strong>in</strong>g a variety<br />
of media. Marconi and his husband Adam<br />
Cafege moved to the U.S. from the Saipan<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2009. They resided <strong>in</strong> San Fransisco<br />
where encouraged by his husband, became<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> art as his full-time career. His<br />
passion which <strong>in</strong>spires his art <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
LGBT issues from equality to bully<strong>in</strong>g. He<br />
was awarded first prize <strong>in</strong> 2012 for a design<br />
for a new headwear designer New Era. The<br />
design featured 4 panels depict<strong>in</strong>g the suffer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
experienced by LBGT young people<br />
around discrim<strong>in</strong>ation and bully<strong>in</strong>g. The<br />
panels depicted taunt<strong>in</strong>g, physical abuse,<br />
suicide, and the mourn<strong>in</strong>g of family. Us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the $<strong>10</strong>,000 prize for the w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g design,<br />
Marconi self-published a book titled “ Of<br />
Petals and Hope, Sonny Sunflower Triumphs<br />
Over Bully<strong>in</strong>g”<br />
Marconi and his husband moved to <strong>Palm</strong><br />
Spr<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> 2015. A pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g he completed<br />
recently titled, “Love W<strong>in</strong>s Always”, is a<br />
tribute to George Zander who died tragically<br />
after a hate crime assault <strong>in</strong> 2015 shortly<br />
after Marconi and his partner arrived here.<br />
The pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g shows George and his husband,<br />
Chris <strong>in</strong> a variety of color and design<br />
that is characteristic of Marconi’s work.<br />
His sculpture work was also selected as a<br />
w<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>in</strong> the 20<strong>16</strong> Hearts In San Fransisco<br />
project benefit<strong>in</strong>g the San Fransisco General<br />
Hospital Foundation. His “ Sun Flowers”<br />
6-foot-tall metal heart won a $50,000.<br />
donation from AT&*T and is now placed at<br />
the San Fransisco AT&T headquarters.<br />
Color and variety characterize Marconi’s<br />
work. He <strong>in</strong>corporates wavy l<strong>in</strong>es along<br />
with other motifs along with paper mache<br />
masks <strong>in</strong> some of his work. When visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
him <strong>in</strong> his gallery, he was creat<strong>in</strong>g figure<br />
sculptures <strong>in</strong> clay that will ultimately be<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>ted with his colorful designs. He has<br />
also worked <strong>in</strong> design<strong>in</strong>g shoes, cups,<br />
plates, and other items decorated with his<br />
colorful designs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a sculpture for<br />
Patron tequila titled, “Build Bridges Not<br />
Walls” for which he won second prize. He<br />
has his art featured on Starbucks cups and<br />
Emeritz Airl<strong>in</strong>e greet<strong>in</strong>g cards. <strong>This</strong> year<br />
he won the Best Art Gallery by Desert Sun<br />
Magaz<strong>in</strong>e for his Galleria Marconi P.S. His<br />
art is w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g awards and recognition because<br />
it is a genu<strong>in</strong>e reflection of his stand<br />
for human values for equality and justice<br />
for all people which is desperately needed<br />
<strong>in</strong> this time of political and societal bigotry<br />
and <strong>in</strong>tolerance.<br />

life ARE free. No matter how you say it.<br />
It’s true. Unless you’re a skeptic. Then you<br />
suck. But it’s true; the best th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> life are<br />
truly free. Money helps, ALOT, but that<br />
moment when you feel a burst of emotion<br />
and its happ<strong>in</strong>ess and you burst out <strong>in</strong> a<br />
smile, like the sun! A great big ball of sunsh<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
I wonder if that expression came<br />
from that?<br />
I wonder lots of th<strong>in</strong>gs. If you read my<br />
column regularly, then you know I wonder<br />
why most people are dicks. I th<strong>in</strong>k about<br />
a lot of th<strong>in</strong>gs, like am I writ<strong>in</strong>g an article<br />
or a column? Who reads it and do I care? I<br />
answered my own question. If I didn’t care,<br />

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis<br />
I decided this <strong>week</strong> not to talk about the<br />
sad state of affairs <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton and the<br />
“leader” who is temporarily resid<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>16</strong>00<br />
Pennsylvania Avenue. However, I did need to<br />
comment about how wonderful the national<br />
LGBT organizations along with leaders <strong>in</strong><br />
the Muslim community did <strong>in</strong> mobiliz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
opposition to the nom<strong>in</strong>ee for Secretary of<br />
the Army. I could not be prouder of how we<br />
and our allies stood together <strong>in</strong> stopp<strong>in</strong>g this<br />
homophobic, xenophobic man from tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
office.<br />
I want to talk about some good projects happen<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> Cathedral City.<br />
We have <strong>in</strong>stituted a 5 year master plan to<br />
resurface every street <strong>in</strong> the city. Us<strong>in</strong>g this<br />
schedule, days of potholes and alignment<br />
issues should be elim<strong>in</strong>ated. Parts of the Cove<br />
and Panorama neighborhoods have already<br />
been done. More are scheduled this year.<br />
Stagecoach! Great start! Beautiful hotel. Go<br />
by and take a tour. 35th and Landau.<br />
The marijuana ord<strong>in</strong>ance and taxes are tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
hold. We estimate $2.5 million <strong>in</strong> just the<br />
first alone! Conceivably this could reach $18<br />
million.<br />
District Elections are com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2018 for the<br />
city council when three seats are up. You can<br />
draw your own map to see how the process<br />
works and give your ideas. Each district will<br />
have about 11,000 residents <strong>in</strong> it.<br />
Last item of note this Memorial Day. Cathedral<br />
City will be host<strong>in</strong>g the first annual<br />
Caribbean Music Festival. Should be a really<br />
fun time on the Festival Lawn of the Civic<br />
Center.<br />
