The Mokena Community Public Library District invites everyone – of all ages, from infants to adults – to participate in the annual summer reading program. Executive Director Cathy Palmer would like everyone to get ready to exercise their minds this summer and enjoy the great selection of materials the library has to offer. Whatever reading preference – text, audio or eBooks – the library has them all. All are welcome to stop in and choose a few great reads. For those interested in perusing the eBooks collection, they may do so by visiting www.mokenali brary.org and download them to their personal eReaders. Registration for the summer reading program will be held from 9-11 a.m. Friday, June 2 and continues throughout the program. All are encouraged to sign up immediately, as weekly programs start June 6 and runs until July 21. Pre-K through eighthgraders will receive a book bag, reading log and entry form at registration. Participants in the program are encouraged to read and record their minutes. Participants are also eligible to earn raffle tickets for a chance to win big prizes, and the more people read, the more chances they will have to win a grand prize! Prizes are given for each weekly reading log completed. High school students in grades 9-12 who read books, graphic novels, magazines and/or participate in the summer read activities can earn raffle tickets to enter into our weekly gift card drawing. All raffle tickets will be entered into the grand prize drawing for a choice of great prizes, including a swag bag, a drone, an electric guitar, a Kindle Fire and more. Adults who are 18 years or older and read a book (audio books included) will earn a raffle ticket to enter into a weekly drawing for a Reading by Design tote bag and a book. All raffle tickets will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize, an Amazon gift card. There will be plenty of summer time programs and entertainment also. Joining the summer reading club guarantees attendance to summer programs. There will be comedy and magic for all ages; after-hours laser tag for grades 9-12; The Traveling World of Reptiles for all ages; author Amy Logan will share her new book with all ages; Mary Macaroni will sing and delight children pre-K through third-grade; a Minecraft tournament for grades 9-12 will take place and much more. Providence Catholic implements new mobile language labs The World Language Department at Providence Catholic High school now offers four mobile language labs that provide students with a differentiated classroom experience to acquire a second language. The versatile labs are mobile and are moved from classroom to classroom and shared amongst the Spanish and French classes throughout the day. The generous funding for the labs came from an anonymous donor who valued technology and understands the benefits of learning a second language. “Instead of having a dedicated classroom with specialized equipment and encountering difficulty with scheduling seven different teachers’ classes for use of that one space, we thought it would be great to have the labs come to the individual classrooms,” said Katie Pavur, world language department chairperson. “This will allow many more students to benefit from this great asset.” The four labs consist of tablets, headsets and styluses; the interactive process allows students to use their language skills individually, with partners and small groups. The mobile language labs give students the opportunity to practice the four components of a language: read- Please see labs, 24
