EDWARDS
ARCHITECTURE
Edwards Architecture is a forward thinking and innovative practice, built around a core team who have worked
across the industry with many years of experience in all forms of design, construction and management on projects
ranging from small and simple to large and complex.
Edwards Architecture has a clarity of design which realises our client’s aspirations whatever the constraints and
the resource to deliver projects through to completion without compromise. Our approach ensures every project
receives the same level of dedication, commitment and ultimate success.
As lead consultants, Edwards Architecture looks beyond the architectural discipline and take an holistic approach
to the design, management and coordination of the project. Our team is ideally suited, through their nature
and experience, to work closely with clients, consultants, contractors and sub-contractors alike to involve them in
realising their part in the success of the project, working to achieve the best value and quality without jeopardising
programme or budget.
As a Practice, we develop all of our projects as a co-ordinated Revit (BIM) model. This forms the basis of the
coordinated construction packages as the project develops. Our teams extensive knowledge in Building Information
Modelling (BIM) during several recent construction projects has enabled us to communicate ideas, resolve issues
in three dimensions at design stage allows a vast reduction in more costly resolutions to the problems on site and
streamline the coordination of the design team.
Edwards Architecture has already an excellent track record of new design and refurbishment for clients, including
charities, , residential, health care and specialist education, where the aspirations and goals often outweigh the
available budget. We pride ourselves in treating these two conflicting elements with equality and seek to use our
experience and knowledge to ensure both are achieved.
LONGHIRST HALL
MORPETH
Longhirst Hall
Grade II Listed Hall
Status : Construction
Contractor: Dere Street Homes
Edwards Architecture were appointed by Dere Street Homes
to restore and convert the existing Grade II listed Hall and
surrounding buildings, many of which were also listed and had
historical importance. It was vital that the converted buildings
retained the many historical features and details. This was
achieved using our combined expertise and knowledge of
conservation.
The new development consists of a range of thoughtfully detailed
designs, ranging from apartments and townhouses, right up to
large executive homes with the grandest being the seven bedroom
conversion of the original Grade II listed Hall. There are also
four other original historic homes, ranging from a five bedroom
dwelling to the conversion of the former coach house.
Set amongst its own grounds and surrounded by trees and open
green spaces and built between 1824-8 for local landowner,
William Lawson, the Hall is considered to be one of architect
John Dobson’s finest buildings. Used in various roles over the next
40 years, it stood empty for several years before it was bought,
restored and converted into a country house hotel. Despite being
a popular wedding venue, the hotel closed in March 2014 with
the whole property remaining empty until being purchased by
Dere Street Homes early in 2016.

The proposed building intends to respond to the surrounding area,
whilst achieving a high quality development of 18 apartments in
line with the clients brief. The footprint of the building is dictated
heavily by the site constraints; including flood zones, a wildlife
corridor and existing easements. The proposed building is
efficient in its footprint and minimises the impact on the site and
surrounding ecology.
The facade of the building responds to the area in its materiality
whilst maintaining a modern aesthetic which was a key
requirement of the clients brief.

WILLOWBURN HOSPICE
LANCHESTER
Status : Complete
Contractor: Galliford Try
The proposed site concept aims to sit in harmony with the
landscape, using the views and gradient to its advantage. The
accommodation wing is positioned to take main advantage
of the views with the service rooms to the rear. The building is
orientated around two axis walls, the main wall cuts through
the building from the entrance through to the contemplation
walkway. Natural materials will pass through the external
envelope to blur the boundary between inside and outside, this
ensures the building interacts fully with the sensory landscape and
forms the relaxing and therapeutic environment
The concept consists of two pure ‘barn’ forms with contemporary
detailing linked with a glazed section. The accommodation wing
is situated under a gradually pitched green roof supported by
‘Glulam’ Timbers. The circulation spaces are to be meeting spaces
this is achieved by introducing curved feature walls and ensuring
it is wide enough for free movement.
