HAYNES HIGHLIGHTS SPRING 2017
Spring is the time of year we all get excited about warmer weather and the beauty of
nature. I find excitement in the phenomenal efforts put forth by so many of you at
HAYNES. We receive many compliments from people you work for and around, and it is
so impressive! I am very proud of all of you. It's obvious that you take ESOP ownership
seriously.
We’re growing! Over the past few years, we’ve added HAYNES Solar, HAYNES Firestop and
now HAYNES Controls. This group is starting out in HVAC controls, but there is a broader
potential for the future. Controls can include entire building automation technologies
optimization, energy efficiency and comfort, and reduction of operating costs.
All of these more recent business additions provide new capabilities and opportunities. For new folks who may
not know, MB HAYNES Corporation started in 1921, solely as an electrical contractor. In 1945, HAYNES added
the utility power line business (now HAYNES Electric Utility). General Contracting (H&M Constructors) was
added in the 70’s, while H&M Constructors – Industrial, HAYNES Plumbing, HAYNES Technologies and HAYNES
Heating & Cooling were added in the 90’s.
Throughout the years, diversifying our portfolio of trade services has allowed us to maintain a viable company
and remain successful, even during the recession of 2008 –2010. When one trade doesn’t do well in a particular
year, another will be profitable. The next year, someone else may be having an off year, and the others will have
a stellar year. Having the diversity of ten trades gives us more financial consistency and stability.
While we’ve added new trades, we’ve also have grown in numbers of employees. We are now close to 700
employees! With this amount of growth, more out of town jobs, and with more people added to the HAYNES
family, it’s vital that we find more effective ways to communicate with you. One of the ways we communicate is
through email, so if you don’t have a company email address and you haven’t provided Human Resources with a
personal email address, please do so by contacting Krystal Patterson kpatterson@mbhaynes.com or call (5430).
You can also give it to your supervisor, and they will get it to Krystal.
We have a new way for you to get information coming soon. In the near future, you will be hearing more about
HAYNES Hub, a secure, internal website for employees. There, you will have access to many types of
information. From the forms you may need for benefits, safety and ESOP, general information and training
videos, to an on-line store for branded clothing and other items, you will have quick access to all the latest
HAYNES news. You will have a user name and when you login for the first time, you will set your own secure
password. You will be able to access the Hub from work, home or anywhere you can use your tablet, laptop or
smart phone. This will reduce the need for regular mail and making trips into the office for various forms, so it
should be more convenient and reduce the number of mailings. We are in the 21st century, and there are
efficiencies we can take advantage of, if we are willing to make some changes. We’re growing and it’s time our
communication abilities do too!
HAYNES HIGHLIGHTS SPRING 2017
As I look back on the last two years, I see great progress in our ESOP teamwork. The walls
of the silos separating us may not be gone, but they are lower and have windows and doors
now. We get phone calls and emails daily from customers who have been WOWed by you.
We’re living our mission of “making a long-term positive impact” in several areas.
As I look forward, we have a new priority. We need to change our safety culture drastically. We have regressed
since becoming an ESOP. Instead of where we are today, I want to see us progress to being the safest contractor
in the Southeast! Our utility customers will be amazed that our crews are safer than theirs. Industrial customers
will be surprised by how our folks exceed their safety requirements. Other construction crews will be amazed by
how productive we are because we are performing difficult tasks safely and with appropriate PPE. Our courteous,
defensive driving and consistent CDL practices will make our vehicle fleet stand out in a good way. We can stand
out in the crowd of undisciplined construction workers as the highest example of safety.
Regrettably, we have a long way to go to be able to say these things. Primarily because of the frequency of
accidents, our Workers’ Compensation Insurance Employer’s Modification Rate (EMR) will be increasing from 0.72
to 0.79. We just moved 10% in the wrong direction! Now is the time to start turning things around. We will work
toward training all foremen in OSHA 30, in addition to First Aid and CPR. All employees beyond 90 days will be
trained in OSHA 10. We will begin pre-task planning and documenting how we are avoiding risks. In addition to
meeting certain customers’ safety criteria, these initiatives will reduce the number of accidents because much of
the training is awareness and hazard avoidance.
In the past 15 months, our people have suffered 19 strains and sprains. Some might think that’s to be expected
of an aging workforce but, except for four, all were under age 40. Excellent OSHA 10 training will raise hazard
awareness. In the same period, nine HAYNES employees experienced hand lacerations. Surprisingly, two were cut
by metal studs that they grabbed, as they lost their balance. To prevent similar injuries, we will soon adopt a 99%
glove policy. We will wear appropriate gloves except when we can’t. There will be a few fine terminations, finishes
or fine tunings that we just can’t do with gloves on, but very few. Any HAYNES employee who walks onto your job
site should expect to see you in a hard hat, safety glasses (on your face, not around your neck) and gloves on,
not hanging at your side.
Another clarification is that even though Pat Hefner and Lee Southard are divisional safety trainers, we expect
them to inspect and help all HAYNES employees, no matter what division. We encourage them to stop by any site
to see how they can help us be safer. If that means writing a safety violation for a different division, that’s what
we expect them to do to make us better. If it’s on your job, the correct response is “thank you for helping us be
safe”.
Finally, we’ve put a root cause analysis policy in place for accidents. Your safety is important to me. When
someone in our HAYNES family gets hurt, I take it personally. Until further notice, I will be involved in every injury
root cause analysis. After each accident, the injured, their supervisor(s), project manager, operations manager
and division head will meet with Bill Toms and me, to review why the accident happened and how to keep it from
happening again. As an ESOP, I usually use words like “we” and “our”, but safety has to start somewhere. I am
adamant that whatever else I do, it is my top priority to ensure our people are safe. I can’t make us the safest
contractor in the southeast by myself. I need your help and cooperation. I ask you to please join me in making a
personal commitment to reverse the direction of our safety trend. We have been on a scary path in 2016 and
2017. Let’s make the rest of the year SAFE and accident free!
HAYNES HAPPENINGS SPRING 2017
HAYNES Electric Apprenticeship Banquet
HAYNES Electric celebrated their 2016-2017 apprenticeship
classes with a breakfast and awards ceremony. Each class
received class completion certificates and those having
superior test scores received HAYNES pullovers! Great Job!
55 Years of Dedicated Service From the Cardinalis!
Dan and Ginny Cardinali, one of our dynamic duo husband and wife teams, retired on March
23rd, 2017. Dan and Ginny say they will miss their HAYNES family, but they are looking forward
to a few leisurely Monday mornings!
At the time of their retirement, Dan had been with HAYNES for 43 years and Ginny for almost
12. Ginny worked for HAYNES Electric Utility for 12 years, doing billing and keeping all HEU
paid. For Dan, the years were an evolution of Electric Service. In the beginning, he didn’t work
in HAYNES Electric Service; he WAS HAYNES Electric Service! That was when there was no
rotating call service and Dan got ALL the calls, whether at work or at home! Later, when there
were other service electricians, many customers just asked for and often waited for Dan. He had
a knack for being able to get the lights back on and making things work. While his technical
abilities provided his base, he excelled in customer service. It was kind of like the old
commercial jingle you could say “everybody doesn’t like something but nobody doesn’t like
Dan”. In 1997, he had a serious accident that shattered his ankle. After a seven-month recovery,
with Ginny taking care of him, he came back to HAYNES and became Service Manager. Again,
he excelled because of his relational skills. Nobody doesn’t like Dan!
For many years, Dan handled electrical service mostly on his own, but because of his ability to
develop people, he leaves a legacy of well-trained people who regularly WOW customers, much
like their mentor. They understand the values of integrity, relationships and excellence because
they have had it modeled for them for many years.
Congratulations and thanks to Dan and Ginny Cardinali. We salute you for your combined 55
years of loyal service. Thank you for WOWing customers, making long lasting positive impacts
by developing people, serving customers and building relationships. You will be missed!
from MB HAYNES. Your company's generosity
to the teaching profession is greatly
appreciated! It certainly helps the teaching
like this. I actually waited for a sale and was
able to purchase two pairs of shoes at the
Eddie Clark, Chuck Bieller & Josh Turner
Dear Mr. Warner,
Yesterday, I had a new heat pump installed and I want to thank those
involved. Ryan Roberson came out an gave me the estimate and
then yesterday Chuck Beiller, Eddie Clark and Josh Turner
installed the unit. They were very kind and helpful and answered any
questions I had. They were also very neat, putting down paper to
walk on in the house and after they took up the paper, they put
covers on their shoes when they came in. I really appreciated that
because it had rained and the ground was mucky in places. I was
also very happy with the price, it was much, much lower than a
previous estimate I had. It has been working very well and it’s so
nice to have heat when I need it. I centainly will recommend MB
Chesire Fitness
My wife and I recently had a heating and cooling system
installed in our residence by your company in Feb 2017. The
install was very complex because of the fact that our house
had no existing heating and cooling since it was built in 1978.
We had 3 estimates on the install, and decided to go with
HAYNES Heating and Cooling because of their willingness to
work with us on how we waned it installed. Ryan Roberson
was very professional and gave us several different options
and quotes for the install. The install was started in a timely
manner within 2 weeks of getting the quote. It took a little
more than 3 days to complete the install. Ryan Silverling and
his team impressed us greatly with their work etiquette and
team performance. Ryan's knowledge and advice to us on
the install was terrific.. It's very assuring to us to have a
quality system installed in our house by a quality team and
company. The price was great, but most importantly to us,
we are very happy and excited with our new investment. We
will definitely let MB HAYNES service and maintain our
investment in the future... A big THANK YOU goes out to MB
WOWing Customers Again & Again!
I have been a customer for a number of years and would
like to express my appreciation for the quality of work your
employees accomplish. Recently Sam and Ryan took care
of some plumbing for me. My water bill has been so high, I
had the meter reread and they found no problem. They
determined no leak. Your plumbers found the leak and
called the water department. The leak was fixed that day.
I am to be reimbursed. Thanks to Sam and Ryan.
When a company does good work due to their employees I
think they should be recognized by the customers.
Sincerely, Mary Tucker
Sonny Drake
Most Reliable!
I am writing to tell you how
pleased I am with the work and
the personal service Sonny
Drake provided at my car
wash. My car wash company
and I are very pleased with
how seamless a lot of complicated
directions and tricky
renovations that Sonny had to
work with and around. Sonny
was available after hours
whenever I had questions on
the phone and overall was the
most reliable worker I have had
on my job site. It was a real
pleasure working with him and
Gary and I will for sure use you
guys again when I develop
more car washes around
Asheville. - Nick Athans
I had one of your plumbers out to my house this week to do some service work.
His name is Sonny. It was a tough job which involved cutting into a bedroom wall
in order to get access to my bathroom shower’s plumbing. It seems there were a
number of old house issues conspiring to cause water to leak down onto our
kitchen ceiling. Several components had to be replaced. When he told me that he
had to open up my bedroom wall, I sighed and told him we had a house full of
company coming for the weekend. I was concerned about that 2’x2’ hole in the
wall where some of our guests were staying. We also had a large water spot on
my kitchen ceiling from the leak that my wife was upset about...Sonny worked his
butt off all day and until 8pm that night getting the plumbing problem solved
before our guests arrived. In addition, to my wife’s delight, he repaired the
sheetrock and also bought kilz and paint to touch up the ceiling for her. In addition
to his ”above and beyond” work ethic, Sonny was friendly, polite, and neat. I just
wanted to let you know how pleased I was with the service he provided us....I
really appreciate the good service that I always get from HAYNES--be it Plumbing,
HVAC, or Electrical. You guys are the best! -Bill Arledge
Ryan Connell
The scope of work was to change out two
conventional large water heaters…….…as a cost
saving option (and a more efficient option),
Haynes Plumbing suggested, sized and designed
a Rinnai instantaneous water heater system to
take the place of the conventional water heaters.
The end result was six Rinnai heaters tied into
the existing 400 gallon storage tanks to supply
hot water to the hotel. Installation time: 1.5
weeks (done in 2 phases in order to maintain hot
water to the guest at all times)Overall cost
resulted in a huge savings to the customer, as
compared to just replacing the old existing
heaters. Also the new heaters carry a longer
warranty, and will cost much less to repair and/or
to replace in the future. The efficiency of the
instantaneous water heaters is far greater than
the old heaters, resulting in a fuel savings to the
customer, starting day one. Just another way we
continue to make a long-lasting positive impact,
and WOW our customers. Good Job Sam and
Ryan, on a beautiful installation!!!
Sincere Thanks!
Proud of Our Crews!
I asked Alex Penley and David Woods if
they could commit to a 1 week time frame
for underslab rough-ins, which was a fairly
aggressive time frame for the work.
Everyone agreed that it would be a big
push, but we should be able to make 10/14
completion. We realized quickly Monday
morning that it would take a lot of
coordination and hard work to make that
date, as the ditches for both trades were in
very close proximity to each other due to
the location of fixtures and electrical
panels. We realized the crews were
basically going to be in each other’s way
throughout the whole process, as their pipe
crossed each other’s multiple times in each
tenant space. There was some concern
from my superintendent (and myself) if we
would actually be able to make the
milestone date. Just wanted to let you both
know that I’m proud of your crews and
project managers on this one, and you
I just wanted to take the time this morning to let you know
Top Quality Job!
Larry Moore
At Oden hardy we strive to provide the top quality job
that our clients deserve. In so doing we constantly
search to work with the top subcontractors in the
areas we build. MB HAYNES Electric is one of those
subcontractors. They are great because from the top
to the bottom they employ the people that do what
they say and meet the criteria of the contracts they
work under. We are constanly asking fotr the subs to
do a dily cleaning to maintain a sfe working area. The
picture (to the right) represents the MB HAYNES
project foreman, broom cleaning the area they were
working in as we are constanly asking to be done.
This was not staged, I was walking into the building to
resolve another with another sub. Perry not only is
an excellent electrician but he is also an excellent
leader. All subs should follow the example he is
setting and our projects together will be safer and
more profitable for all. I suggest that everyone
forward this message to their people to see what it
takes to be great like MB HAYNES! Thank you Perry
Angela and I would like to take this time to offer a special thank you to the
employees of Haynes. In the past twenty-two months, our lives have been
drastically changed. Angela is dealing with advanced stage four melanoma
and I have been out of work since September with shoulder surgery and
rehabilitation. And many days it is easy to become discouraged or
overwhelmed. But over and over the kindness of the Haynes Family has
brightened and encouraged us. Many cards, prayers and gifts have touched
us in ways we can't explain. But this past November at Thanksgiving, we
received the most humbling of blessings. On Wednesday, before
Thanksgiving, Ian, Darlene and Dan brought us a huge Thanksgiving meal
prepared by the electrical service team. We ate smoked turkey with ALL the
trimmings, plus we were blessed with a monetary gift. In a time when many
people need things, or are trying to save money for their own families, these
folks gave unsparingly to us! How do you begin to say thank you for all the
outpouring love and concern? I know that work can get frustrating day to
day, but I am thankful to work for a company that stands behind its
employees; that we are more than a number! We can never express
sufficient gratitude for all Haynes has done for us. Our wish for all of you is
a Merry Christmas, and know that we thank God for you every day!
addition, they were considerate
of our funeral schedule and of
families and visitors to our
chapel. Finally, not to brag too
much on the "short guys", but,
as I told them, Santa would be
proud of his elves working
through the Christmas
season...Best wishes for a
healthy and prosperous New
Year.
Running Smoothly!
Miriam Metcalf
I have used the services of MB HAYNES ever since I moved to Asheville and have had so many
pleasant encounters with your staff that I felt compelled to say thank you. Every interaction whether
by phone or in person has been a pleasure. Each service person has been on time, friendly, and
helpful. The women who answer your phones and schedule appointments are great. Just this
morning I had interactions with Leniece, Miriam and Vicky and each one was terrific. Thanks for
making dealing with "home maintenance" run smoothly. Deborah McCorkle, West Asheville
