Why Choose PVCu?
uPVC (unplasticised PolyVinyl Chloride) was the term used
in Britain before the name was changed to PVCu in the late
1980s to fall in line with the rest of Europe. It’s called PVCu on
the continent because most European languages place the
noun (the word PVC in this case) before the adjective (U).
8

Thermally Efficient
It’s well known that PVCu is a low conductor of heat,
helping to retain warmth within a building and keep
the cold out. This is further enhanced by designing
multiple chambers inside the window profiles,
allowing them to trap air and create a thermal
barrier.
Add double or triple glazing to a PVCu frame, and
U-values as low as 0.8 W/m²K can be achieved.
PVCu outperforms any other material, with 10
times more PVCu windows achieving an ‘A’ rating
compared to the nearest alternative.
Attractive
The old chunky white PVCu frames seen in the 1980s
are well and truly in the past. With a wide range
of woodgrain effects and colours, as well as slim
sightlines, PVCu windows can be as aesthetically
pleasing as their timber or aluminium counterparts.
Designs have advanced to the extent that sashes
can sit flush in the frame, mirroring a pre-1932 style
timber frame – ideal for conservation properties
where timber is preferred, or alternatively to offer a
sleek, contemporary appearance.
Durable
PVCu windows have an expected life span of up to
35 years.
Frames will not rot, corrode, warp or split, and special
additives make them tough enough to suit European
requirements.
In addition, the lightweight nature of a PVCu frame
makes it easier to handle and install, reducing time
on site for fitters and contractors.
9

Why Choose PVCu?
Low maintenance
With PVCu, the ongoing maintenance consists
of a wipe down with warm soapy water, making
them simpler and more cost effective to look after.
Woodgrain or foiled windows with minor scratches
can be repaired using a RAL-matched pen.
Contrast this with timber windows – they need
treating or painting on a regular basis, which is time
consuming and can be costly. Aluminium windows
can fade and oxidise when exposed to the sun, often
requiring the use of specialist cleaners and coatings
to restore.
Weather proof
PVCu windows are ideal for the damp British weather.
The frames will not swell or rot, and co-extruded
gaskets provide excellent resistance to air and water.
With both timber and aluminium frames, the seals
are added in afterwards. Joints can
also shrink back over time, causing gaps in
the seals.
With PVCu, the gaskets are welded together as
part of the manufacturing process, providing a
continuous seal all the way round and eliminating
draughts for longer.
Benefit vs. cost
There are three distinct areas where installing PVCu
windows saves on cost and adds benefit:
• Lower purchase price and installation costs
• Higher energy savings over the life of the
windows, and
• Lower maintenance costs.
Steel Reinforcement - Busting The Myth
1
22

Many old ‘first generation’ PVCu windows relied heavily on steel
reinforcement - but Liniar has redefined the rules.
History
For these ‘first generation’ windows, it was considered
essential to securely fix hardware such as hinges
and locking mechanisms, in addition to increasing
the stiffness of the frame and reducing deflection
when subjected to wind gusts
For many years, this was the accepted make up of
a PVCu window – and some are still manufactured
in this way. In more recent times energy efficiency
became a more prominent topic and the evolution
of window products continued with the introduction
of PVCu thermal inserts.
These inserts replaced the thermally inefficient steel,
occupying the same internal chamber and creating
a multi-chambered thermal barrier in the same
3-chambered profiles.
Not exactly a giant technological leap, more of a
‘gap filler’ and not without its drawbacks – these thin
inserts add very little to the stiffness of a profile, nor
do they provide a secure fixing for hardware.
This resulted in many window systems providers
having two different offerings – one which is
thermally efficient (with thermal inserts) and one
suitable for enhanced security (with steel).
The Liniar solution...
In 2007 the Liniar team set about designing a brand
new system, with a blank sheet of paper and loads
of new ideas – a system which would be both
thermally efficient AND strong and secure.
Firstly, there were to be no thermal inserts – the multichambered
effect was designed to be part of the
profile, with both the amount of internal webs and
their spacing being fine-tuned with Therm software to
achieve exceptional thermal performance.
This principle could only be applied to specific
profiles within the system, with transoms and mullions
remaining steel-reinforced using a steel box section
within the central chamber – this provides the rigidity
needed within the frame.
Secondly, the issue of secure fixing for hardware was
addressed by incorporating a rectangular pocket
directly behind areas where fixings would be used,
achieving screw pull-out forces equivalent to that of
1.2mm thick steel when inserted with a PVCu screw
retainer (1).
The Liniar window system has been independently
tested and verified by the British Standards Institute,
meeting PAS 24 with reduced steel and BS6375; air
and water leakage.
23

The Science Behind the System
2
Patented Bubble Gasket (2)
Historically, PVCu window systems were fitted with a
range of EPDM (rubber) gaskets at the fabrication stage,
similar to the method still used on timber and aluminium
windows. The resulting permeability of the assembled
frame was dependent upon the quality of each seal
joint, with many suffering from draughts and wind noise.
The PVCu extrusion process lends itself to the wellestablished
technology of co-extrusion - adhering
the gasket onto the frame using a separate extrusion
machine during manufacture. This evolutionary step
eliminates the time-consuming gasket insertion process
and creates a more reliable corner seal at each joint.
Many PVCu window systems make use of co-extruded
gaskets, most adapting existing profiles to the process.
Starting from scratch, the Liniar team had no constraints,
and spent a significant amount of time developing
its patented bubble gasket to outperform all others in
speed of fabrication and in permeability - achieving
a zero air leakage during independent tests at BSI.The
24

design of both the gasket and the area behind the
gasket is crucial, not only to the permeability of the
finished window, but during the welding process where
hard lumps can form in the corners of each joint,
cracking sealed units. Liniar’s dual-action gasket performs
equally well as a soft dynamic seal on opening sashes
as it does as a firm glazing gasket for sealed units, its
tolerance friendly design always ensuring a whistle-free
seal inside and out – and no gaps, not even in the corners.
Enhanced Thermal Performance
As the quantity and spacing of internal webs reduce
thermal transmittance through Liniar frames, the flow is
directed towards the path of least resistance. To address
this, the Liniar design team introduced a brace of simple
but effective ancillary products.
The first is the innovative glazing flipper (3) – this can
be clipped onto the short central up-stand within the
glazing area, creating a thermal barrier and additional
3
gasket, and sealing the perimeter of any glazed unit -
keeping the heat in and moisture out.
The second is the patented thermal dam (4) –
introduced to address heat loss at the outer edge of
the frame, Liniar’s clip-in thermal dam creates a multichambered
barrier with optimized leg spacing and is
manufactured from recycled material produced during
4
the extrusion ‘start-up’ procedure.
The result is a supremely energy efficient double glazed
product, one capable of achieving a cost-effective
A+ Window Energy Rating, or 1.2 Wm²/K U-Value and if
required a triple glazed 0.8 Wm²/K U-Value window.
Building Regulations
Building regulations provide a framework of minimum standard for
construction projects in the UK. Find out what’s involved in meeting these
requirements and how Liniar can help.
These regulations cover new buildings and
safety to electrical safety, heating and appliances, to
extensions, and some changes of use, such as
drainge and waste disposal.
barn conversions.
Liniar windows and doors, along with the range of
A range of guidelines or ‘Approved Documents’
compliant thresholds, where relevant, comply with
detail what must be adhered to. These range from Parts B, L, M and Q.
Part A to Part Q and cover everything from structural
Part B
Part B refers to fire safety and is divided into 2 sections.
Part 1 addresses dwellings (residential buildings
shared by 6 or less people) and Part 2 buildings other
than dwelling houses.
Any windows provided for emergency egress
purposes and any external doors provided for
escape should comply with the following conditions:
• the window should have an unobstructed
openable area that is at least 0.33m 2 and at
least 450mm high and 450mm wide (the route
through the window may be at an angle rather
than straight through).
• The bottom of the openable areas should not be
more than 1100mm above the floor.
All Liniar windows are capable of achieving this,
meaning any Casement, Tilt & Turn, French or Flush
Sash, are ideal as fire escapes.
Part F
Part F details ventilation requirements to maintain
indoor air quality.
For both new and existing buildings the key aim of
Part F is to provide a ventilation system capable of
limiting the accumulation of moisture and pollutants
originating within a building which would otherwise
become a hazard to the health of the people living
within the building. This has become more prominent
in recent years with the increase in air tightness
of buildings.
Liniar windows can assist with background ventilation
by fitting windows with head vents, providing secure,
draught-free ventilation (see page 48).
Building Regulations
Part L
Part L refers to conserving fuel and power, by raising
the energy performance of buildings. It is divided
into 4 sections addressing new dwellings existing
dwellings, new buildings other than dwellings and
existing buildings other than dwellings.
Where windows, roof windows, or doors are to be
provided, reasonable provision in normal cases would
be the installation of draught-proofed units whose
performance is no worse than given in Table 1.
In addition, insulated cavity closers should be
installed where appropriate. Where the replacement
windows are unable to meet the requirements of
Table 1 because of the need to maintain the external
appearance of the facade or the character of the
building, replacement windows should meet a centre
pane U-value of 1.2W/m²K, or single glazing should
be supplemented with low-e secondary glazing. In
this latter case, the weather stripping should be on
Standard for controlled fittings
the secondary glazing to minimise condensation risk
between the primary and secondary glazing.
Liniar systems exceed Part L requirements, achieving
BFRC A++ ratings with ease. Liniar also provides a
database of over 1,000 BFRC simulations to refer to.
For more information on the requirements of Part L,
Part M
Part M requires the inclusive provision of ease of
access to buildings, together with requirements for
disabled access. Any external doors provided for
wheelchair access purposes should comply with the
following conditions:
• Requirement M1 will be satisfied if an external
door providing access for disabled people has
a minimum clear opening width of 775mm.
• The threshold level is level; if a raised threshold
is unavoidable, it has total height of not more
than 15mm, a minimum number of upstand
and slopes, with any upstands higher than 5mm
chamfered or rounded.
All Liniar doors are available with Part M compliant
low thresholds, threshold trays and half trays.
For more information please refer to Approved
Document M.
Part Q
Part Q covers the security of dwellings and refers to
new dwellings only. Reasonable provision must be
made to restrict unauthorised access to any dwelling,
and any part of a building from which access can
be gained.
It also covers the standards for doors and windows
to be“manufactured to a design that has been
shown by test to meet the security requirements of
British Standards publication PAS24/PAS 24:2016, or
equivalent enhanced security testing.
Liniar products meet this standard, by exceeding
the requrements for Part Q. Liniar provides a Part
Q manual including detailed illustrations and
instructions to explain how to achieve compliance
for every Liniar product in the range.
Recycling and Sustainability
PVCu is now recognised as a sustainable option when it comes to
fenestration products, with the Liniar range leading the way in its
environmental credentials.
All PVCu windows are recyclable, but the Liniar
system is simpler, and cheaper, to recycle at the end
of its life than other systems. The low steel content
conditions and systems, have as little effect on the
environment as possible.
It is the company’s policy to:
in a Liniar window results in speedier separation
of PVCu and steel and our externally mounted
ModLok products can be separated in seconds,
As each window can be recycled up to 10 times,
this gives PVCu windows an estimated life span of
350 years – more eco-friendly than depleting timber
resources. As a company, Liniar continually strives to
improve its environmental performance and reduce
its carbon footprint, and has even developed new
Conserve resources and minimise waste
Train and supervise staff to ensure their actions
are with due care for the environment
products to avoid wastage and create opportunities
to re-use the PVCu offcuts that would otherwise be
sent to landfill.
The company is proud of its record of ZERO
operational wastage, with 100% of production waste
PVCu (around 1,200 tonnes per year)
re-ground at its in-house recycling facility before
being formulated into new products. The Liniar
decking range is made from 86% recycled
PVCu, with its plastic piling range composed
of a staggering 100% recycled material. Liniar’s
• Require contractors to meet the same standards
of environmental care
• Assess the environmental impact of any new site
development
• Regularly assess the environmental impact of
the company’s operations.
The Liniar fleet delivers products nationwide around
the UK. All vehicles are selected with low emissions
and the highest fuel economy in order to minimise
this impact.
environmental policy is to ensure its processes,
SBD
Secured by Design status is awarded to products
designed with exceptional security features as
their main priority. Liniar products that qualify
to hold this certification are tested to meet the
requirements of the Association of Chief Police Officers,
ISO9001
The Liniar factory has achieved BS EN ISO 9001
accreditation, meeting British Standards for
a quality management system. This standard
means that Liniar customers benefit from
consistently great products and service.
BBA
The BBA (British Board of Agrément) is the UK’s
major authority offering approval of construction
products, systems and installers. Their certificates
are recognised by architects, engineers and
specifiers as an impartial review of performance.
BS EN 12608
BS EN 12608:2003 is the standard of quality,
consistency and performance required for PVCu
extruded hollow profiles. Products are regularly
tested to ensure that they continue to meet
these standards.
PAS 24
This accreditation is part of the British Standards
system and shows the product has been
subjected to a series of tests, demonstrating
enhanced security performance, air and water
tightness and wind loading to BS6375.
BS 6375
Parts 1, 2 and 3 of British Standard BS6375 are
the requirements for performance of windows
and doors. This includes weather performance
testing, inclusive of wind loading, functionality
testing and cyclic testing.
WERS and Energy Efficiency
WERs (Window Energy Ratings) show
how energy efficient a window is.
The Window Energy Ratings scale is designed by the
British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC) to measure
the thermal performance of windows, and enables
different windows to be compared on a scale that runs
from A++ down to E.
The rainbow labels you will see are simiar to the ones
found on household appliances, such as a TV, fridge or
freezer. A++ is the most energy efficient and
E the least efficient.
The formula used to calculate a WER takes into
consideration various factors:
• U-value (of the glass Ug and frames Uf)
• the solar heat gain of ‘G value’ of the glass
• air leakage rate of all the components of the fitted
window
The U-value is the measure of heat loss in watts (W) per
square metre (m 2 ) of the material when the temperature
(K) outside is at least 1 degree cooler.
When the U-value has been calculated it is combined
with the solar gain of the glass and the air leakage rate
and given a numerial BFRC rating, this is then converted
into a band A++ to E.
Building regulations now state that new homes must
have windows with an energy rating of at least C or a
U-value of 1.6W/m 2 K
Passive House
Passive House is a rigorous voluntary standard for energy
efficiency in a building, reducing it’s carbon footprint.
The new Liniar EnergyPlus90 system, can achieve
U-values as low as 0.5 W/m 2 K - standards for Passive
House.
Case Study - Energy Efficiency
Liniar Helps Generate Energy For Eco-House Project
As seen on
BBC1’s
100K House
Four years ago, Jo and Andy Thompson were living
in social housing at Unity Gardens, Long Sutton,
Lincolnshire - one of the UK’s first zero-carbon
housing developments.
“We were inspired by the development that we
used to live in, which was eco-friendly with no utility
bills, so for our home, we employed the help of
local architect Dr Jerry Harrall, who is known for his
involvement in eco-friendly developments.”
The weakest area of a house is traditionally the
windows, as this is where most of the heat is lost.
Standard house builders will usually get U-values of
around 1.7W/m 2 K - but the aim for this property was
to get below 1.0W/m 2 K.
“We hadn’t heard of Liniar windows before, but our
architect recommended them as he had used them
in previous projects,” explained Andy.
They found a local installer who ordered windows
with Liniar EnergyPlus profile, plastic composite
spacer bar, triple glazing and low emissivity film on
the inside and outside to achieve a U-value of
0.8W/m 2 K.
By using this combination, the heat loss from the
house was reduced by 50%. The windows were
installed on a layer of external insulation as opposed
to the usual cavity, to further increase thermal
efficiency.
“We’re delighted that the building is ‘Energy Positive’
by 40% - meaning that it generates 40% more energy
than it uses,” said Andy. “Putting that into numbers,
our house generates around 5,000 kWh of energy a
year, but we only use around 3,000 kWh.”
Case Study - Casement Windows & Lantern Roof
School project proves to be a real education.
The challenge of transforming a 100-year-old school
building into upmarket residential homes is no mean
feat – but that is exactly the task that one building
firm has undertaken and the outstanding result puts
them top of the class.
The old Shirland Primary School, near Higham in
Derbyshire, became available to buy after the school
was relocated to a new building in 2011 and Linden
Design & Build Ltd purchased it, with planning
permission, in June 2014.
The existing site consisted of a two storey brick built
schoolmaster’s house, formerly used as school
offices, and a substantial brick built school building,
along with a tarmac surfaced playground.
Linden Design & Build’s plan was to develop the
schoolmaster’s house into a single dwelling and
split the other building into four houses, while
also erecting five new properties on the land -
one 4-bedroomed detached and two pairs of
2-bedroomed semis, all with garages.
Don Berry of Linden Design & Build, explained:
“Firstly we had to replace all of the roofing and
render the two existing buildings before installing
new windows and doors. Because of the nature
of the properties, the windows were going to be a
fundamental feature of the finished design.
“We chose cream foiled casement windows to give
the properties a classy appearance, with French
doors, a lantern roof and residential doors to match.”
Linden Design & Build specified a minimum U-value
rating of 1.6 but was delighted that the windows
actually achieved an impressive 1.3!
As the properties are situated next to a busy
residential road, acoustic laminated glass was also
utilised to keep traffic noise down to a minimum.
“Liniar products are superb,” said Don. “They’re easy
to install, have outstanding thermal values and look
simply stunning. We couldn’t be more pleased with
the results!”
EnergyPlus 90 System
EnergyPlus 90 from Liniar now joins an
elite band of window systems able
to comply with the exacting Passive
House standards.
Many other systems feature messy and
time-consuming foam-filled cavities to meet
the requirements.
EnergyPlus90 is unique in that its 9-chamber profile –
3 more chambers than Liniar EnergyPlus – has been
designed to meet the triple challenges of thermal
efficiency, noise reduction and security.
Passive House
Early testing has resulted in Liniar EnergyPlus 90 joining
the ranks of a select few window products to claim
Passive House certification - component id: 1014wi03 &
1015fx03.
Whole window U-values for argon-filled triple glazed units
are as low as 0.5 W/m²K with quadrudle glazing and
Window Energy Ratings up to A++40.
Weather Testing
Weather testing carried out on a full-sized EnergyPlus 90
window has surpassed BS6375 requirements.
Acoustic Testting
With acoustic values as high as Rw = 42dB, EnergyPlus 90
offers a unique proposition for commercial developers.
56

Why Choose Liniar EnergyPlus 90?
• Whole window U-values as low as 0.5 W/m²K (QGU)
and WER as high as A++40
• Featuring the patented Liniar bubble gasket and
glazing flipper.
ModLok
Developed by Liniar in conjunction with the world’s leading lock
manufacturers, the revolutionary ModLok technology is
available in our residential, French, bi-fold & patio door systems
ModLok for Residential, French and Bi-folding doors
ModLok is a highly innovative combined
reinforcing and locking mechanism, bringing
additional strength and rigidity to the doors and
enabling you to have even wider configurations of
bi-folding and patio doors.
Strong and secure
The Liniar bi-fold door provides the strength and
rigidity of an aluminium bi-fold combined with the
thermal efficiency and colour options of a PVCu
door. The ModLok exo-skeletal system ensures only
the master door will open first, so there’s no chance
of spraining locks by trying to open the wrong door.
The shootbolt locking mechanism designed
inside, not only maintaining the sleek lines but
enhancing security as they can’t be unscrewed
from outside.
We wanted to offer a low threshold, without the
need for expensive and messy excavation, so we
designed our own clever solution.
We’ve even designed folding keys to avoid any
problems with them being left in the locks during
operation – it’s often the small things that make a
huge difference.
Continual aluminium exoskeleton perimeter
into each Liniar ModLok bi-folding
door ensures that it is bolted firmly into
the stainless steel track, maximising
security.
Built in anti-lift features, anti-bump
cylinders and optional anti-snap cylinders
combine to bring you peace of mind.
Size wise
ModLok also offers enhanced security
features, including three opposing hooks and
two shootbolts built in to every master door,
plus two anti-lift shootbolts on every slave door.
Liniar’s ModLok has been designed to take
the PVCu sector into new areas. Its fully patented
aluminium exo-skeleton means that our bi-folding
doors can now reach the same size parameters
as their aluminium counterparts – you can choose
up to 7 panes wide to span the entire width of your
garden room and open it to the outside.
We’ve added slim hinges with the fixings hidden
62

ModLok for Patio doors
The Liniar patio system features the innovative
ModLok system to combine steel reinforcing
with a high security locking mechanism –
offering far greater security than other patio
door systems.
Strong and secure
With four hook bolts plus two shootbolts at the
top and bottom of the sliding door, the Liniar
patio’s locking mechanism has been designed
so the hooks don’t protrude into the room, even
when the door is open, making it extremely
family friendly.
To make the patio door even more secure,
choose the latest ‘anti-snap’ locking cylinders.
With 3-star security, these cylinders offer even
greater protection against the more determined
would-be intruder using tools to break the
cylinder and gain entry by manipulating the
door to open.
Low threshold option
The Liniar low threshold is thermally broken,
adding to the energy efficiency of your patio
doors. As with the bi-fold low threshold, no
excavation is required to fit the low threshold,
cutting down on installation time and mess.
Choose from silver or gold options to co-ordinate
with handles.
Better for the environment
Not often considered when buying a new
product for your home, ModLok technology
has a big environmental advantage when the
doors eventually come to the end of their life.
Metal parts included in other PVCu systems
mean that they cannot easily be recycled
without lots of effort to strip them down.
However, as ModLok comprises seamless steel
sections, they are simple to separate once the
doors are removed, enabling the PVCu to be
recycled faster and with much less effort.
Case Study - French Doors
Working in ‘Harmony’ for 1.6m Torquay luxury beach project
A picturesque Devonshire beach front has
undergone a stunning transformation – and
Liniar French doors were used as part of the
ambitious £1.6m development.
Torbay Council contracted construction firm
Interserve with the task of demolishing the
old huts and replacing them with a modern
complex. Headquartered in the UK, Interserve
is one of the world’s foremost construction
companies, with gross revenues of £3.3 billion
and a workforce of approximately 80,000
people worldwide.
The scheme involved the huge logistical
challenge of installing pre-cast concrete units
in areas with restricted access. The design
successfully aligned the new development to
the sea wall, creating a tapered effect that fits
in with the cliff backdrop and pine-studded
cove.
The two-storey complex of 144 luxury chalets
has an upper tier with private balconies, each
chalet fitted with an electricity supply, kitchen
worktop and cupboards, to be available for
use throughout the year.
As part of the design for the project, double
French PVCu doors were specified for each
beach hut.
Harmony’s Contracts Manager, Ross Bigwood,
takes up the story:
“As a preferred contractor of Interserve we
were delighted to take on this project. But as
the main focus of our business is aluminium,
and PVCu was specified, we had to do our
homework as to what brand of doors to use.
“After some extensive research we found
that the excellent thermal efficiency offered
by Liniar profiles, coupled with the highly
competitive price, made it the obvious choice.
“Our fitters loved the product. The French doors
were simple to install and we couldn’t have
asked for better usability and workability. The
superior thermal efficiency provided by the
Liniar profile was vital for the location of the
beach huts as they are designed to be in use
throughout the year.”
Harmony began work on-site in January with
a tight deadline to have all 144 beach huts
fitted out before the Easter Bank Holiday – and
despite some inevitable delays caused by
the weather, the assignment was completed
ahead of schedule.
Once all of the doors had been fitted, timber
shutters were installed to provide protection
painted in 15 different shades of blue.
ModLok Patio Door
As with the window system, the Liniar
sliding patio door was designed from
scratch to take advantage of the very
latest technology, and has been cyclic
tested by Liniar’s in-house robot to
provide assurance that it’s built to last.
Strong and secure
The Liniar patio door features the patented ModLok
system, a combined reinforcement and multi-point
locking system developed in conjunction with leading
lock manufacturers. In addition, all external sliders feature
multiple anti-lift properties to combat would-be intruders.
Unique ‘air glide’ system
Other patio doors operate on a four-wheel steel opening
system. The Liniar patio features a unique eight-wheel
acetal system, providing stability, durability and smooth,
silent operation.
Self-cleaning track
One of the reasons other patio doors are hard to open
is when dirt and mud fall into the track. The Liniar patio
features built-in brushes that sweep the track clean every
time the door is opened.
Attractive
With ultra-slim sculptured sightlines, no unsightly crash
stops and a built-in decelerator, the Liniar patio door is
one of the most attractive on the market.
Case Study - Patio Doors
Burglars fail to beat Liniar ModLok Patio doors
Patio doors are often considered the weakest
point of access to a property, but a West Yorkshire
fabricator’s faith in the security benefits of the Liniar
ModLok system was strengthened even further
after a failed attempt by burglars to force a set open.
When a local building firm needed some patio doors
for an extension they were constructing, they chose
Liniar ModLok – not only for the stylish appearance,
but also because of the superior security features
they offer - and when the criminals came calling
they more than stood up to the test, standing firm
against the unlawful effort.
Because the ModLok patio system combines steel
reinforcing with a high security locking mechanism,
utilising four hook bolts plus two shootbolts at the top
and bottom of the sliding door, it offers far greater
security than any other product of its type.
The burglars, while damaging the exterior PVCu
with their assault, completely failed to prise open
the doors to gain access. Unfortunately for the
homeowners, the burglars broke in to the property
through one of two older windows instead, after
giving up on the door.
The patio door has since been replaced with a
brand new ModLok and the old windows have
also now been upgraded to Liniar - assuring the
homeowners of future peace
of mind.
PVCu Bi-Fold Door
The first bespoke PVCu bi-fold to be
launched in the UK, the Liniar bi-fold
was designed from scratch with
unique components.
Standard Bi-Fold
The advent of home designer and self-build television
programmes created a new generation of homeowners
wanting to open up entire walls of their homes to let in
light and air. The very first PVCu bi-folding doors were
made from existing window components and were
unattractive. In addition, the nature of PVCu means it
can contract and expand, causing challenges with the
long-term robustness of these early doors.
The Liniar team went back to the drawing board and
created a bi-folding door system with brand new
components – including a unique roller, slim hinges and
fixings and a low threshold option.
Since its launch in 2010 the concept has been
reimagined to introduce the heavy duty ModLok bifold.
ModLok Bi-Fold
The second generation of PVCu bi-folds came with
the Liniar ModLok bi-fold system in 2014. This design
totally re-engineered the doors, creating an exoskeletal
aluminium structure that combines reinforcement with a
multi-point locking system around each pane.
The robust nature of the ModLok bi-fold means it
successfully passed PAS24 security testing, and has been
cyclic tested to more than 10 times the British Standard
without failing.
Standard Bi-Fold
The very first bespoke designed PVCu bi-fold to be
designed and launched in the UK, Liniar’s Standard
bi-fold features thermally efficient profiles, slim fixings
with hidden hinges for additional security and is
available up to 4 panes wide – all in a wide choice of
colours, finishes and threshold options. Bottom rolling,
the Liniar Standard bi-fold doesn’t require additional
strengthening of existing lintels as all the weight is on
the bottom of the doors.
ModLok Bi-Fold
The patented ModLok system offers a high-security
locking mechanism with combined reinforcement,
and offers the highest thermal efficiency of any Liniar
PVCu bi-fold, at just 1.0 W/m²K. Its beautifully sleek
appearance and detailed design features make it
a popular choice for both modern and traditional
dwellings. The ModLok bi-fold has been cyclic
tested to more than 10 times British Standards.
Alumina Bi-Fold
Alumina is a ‘true’ aluminium bi-folding door system
that encompasses the highest degree of energy
efficiency combined with an optional ‘warm touch’
foiled exterior. Ideal for large scale and commercial
applications. With PAS 24 and Secured by Design
accreditation granted at the first attempt, the
Alumina bi-fold also offers the ultimate in security.
Case Study - Bi-Fold Doors
A cost effective way to add a touch of class.
A brand new residential development of 2, 3 and 4
bed homes in Leicestershire found a cost effective
way of being able to offer buyers a truly unique
selling point with the Liniar bi-fold door.
Having already chosen Liniar windows for the
project, the development team spotted the Liniar
4-pane bi-fold and commented that although they
loved it, and it would look great on the development,
it would probably be too costly.
Upon investigation, the original plans had been
drawn up to include a window and a set of French
doors at the rear of each property. It was pointed out
that the developer would see additional cost savings
if they were to consider a bi-folding door set instead
– not just the French doors and the window, but also
Even better, the reduced installation time to fit one
product instead of two would result in a speedier
completion time for each property.
When the team re-worked their calculations,
they found that the cost difference taking all of
the above into account was only marginal. They
agreed the benefits of being able to offer a bifolding
door as standard in each property would
set the development apart from others and provide
additional value to home buyers, so it was an easy
decision to make.
The bi-folding doors were supplied in cream PVCu
to match with the Liniar windows on the entire
development, and the installation went perfectly
to plan.
reducing costs through having just one lintel rather
than two, in addition to the reduction in brickwork
and plastering between the products.
105

PVCu Bi-Fold Door Configurations
The Liniar bi-folding door range has a wide variety
of options when it comes to sizes and opening
configurations – with the Standard range available
up to 4 panes wide and the ModLok version up to 7
panes wide.
Our door pane numbering works like this:
• The first number shows the number of doors in total
within the frame.
• The second number shows the majority of doors
folding back to either left or right.
• The third number shows the balance of doors
opening in the opposite direction.
So, a 4-3-1 bi-folding door would be four panes wide,
with three doors folding back to one side of the
frame, and a single opening door on the other.
Conservatory Roof
The Liniar conservatory roof matches
perfectly with its range of PVCu windows
and doors - resulting one of the most
thermally efficient conservatories in the UK.
A touch of colour
Liniar’s revolutionary EnergyPlus conservatory roof is
available in a stunning range of colours from stock and
is designed to match perfectly with the rest of the Liniar
window and door ranges.
Designed for today
Our unique EnergyPlus twin-walled top caps keep
more of the warmth inside the building, making it less
expensive to heat.
Liniar’s carefully engineered roof design results in no
holes or gaps for water ingress - and the innovative
security measures built into the Liniar roof means that it
can’t be taken apart from the outside – making it virtually
burglar-proof.
Adding extra space
From lean-to sunrooms to large Victorian garden rooms,
each Liniar conservatory roof is designed and built to
your exact specifications – in as little as five days from
quote acceptance.
Roof kits
The Liniar conservatory roof is available to installers in
kit format, making it simple to assemble, fit and adjust
on-site.
126

Why Choose a Liniar Conservatory?
• Designed completely from scratch by a team with
over 500 years of industry experience
• No more glazing slip - thanks to Liniar’s unique
patented valley glazing stop
• EnergyPlus twin-walled top caps for greater thermal
effciency and an alternative to expensive aluminium
• Lantern roofs also available
• Pre-closed permanent memory foam, with a
pre-applied primary seal and a ridge cap which
attaches to leave no screw holes for water ingress
• If you can design it, Liniar can make it! All roofs are
made bespoke to your requirements.
• BBA weather tested to 300 Pascal - equivalent to 113
inches of rain in 24 hours and a force nine gale
• The Liniar roof is easy to fit with tolerance
engineered in, as well as being fully on-site
adjustable for reduced time on site
• Concealed tie bar fixings are available as well as tie
wire options for a more contemporary appearance.
127

Victorian
With a pitched roof on both
sides, this style strikes the
balance between style and
a seamless fit with most
properties.
One of the most popular
styles of conservatory, the
Victorian consists of a bay
front, a steeply pitched roof
and ornate ridge details –
with three or five facets.
Gable
Combination
Fully glazed right up to the
apex, this style also has
a square or rectangular
footprint. Offering a
often called the ‘sun burst’.
Offering the ultimate in
flexibility, this style combines
Ancillaries
Ensure a perfect match with the
Liniar range of trims and couplings.
Specifying a full Liniar installation
ensures a single point of guarantee, in
addition to colour matched products.
Cills and reinforcements
Liniar cills are available in five sizes along with a range of
end caps, jointers and reinforcing. Cills are designed to
match the Liniar suite and can be foiled to colour match
the Liniar range of window systems. Cills are
multi-chambered for strength.
Structural couplings
Liniar has a comprehensive range of frame couplers,
which are necessary for the combination of window
sections. We have provided tables showing the end loads
for all Liniar couplers, which have been calculated in
accordance with the BPF Code of Practice for the Survey
and Installation of White High Impact PVCu WIndows.
Trims
Liniar foam trims are designed and manufactured at the
same UK extrusion facility as its range of windows, doors
and roofs – using the same high quality manufacturing
processes and materials.
132

Why Choose Liniar Ancillaries?
• Foiled to colour match the rest of the Liniar range
• Snap together feature on 165mm cill, outer frames,
low thresholds, frame extensions and 90° corner post
• 10, 20 and 50mm frame extension
• Acoustic head vent available to fit all Liniar products
and one piece door drip bar for ease of assembly
• All trims are part of the Liniar Approved range, giving
you peace of mind that they have been tested and
approved by Liniar
• All covered by the Liniar 10 year guarantee.
Structural Couplings
These ‘load tables’ have been calculated in accordance with BPF Code of Practice for the Survey and Installation
of White High Impact PVCu Windows and are only applicable for those joint profiles restrained at their centre.
The load tables must not be applied to those joint profiles used in isolation. All structural couplings are to be
used with the corresponding Liniar bay pole jack when used for end (axial) loadings.
20mm must be allowed for coupling on all joints.
PVCu Butt Joint
The Liniar PVCu Butt Joint is not designed to take any
end loadings.
End loads for all the other Liniar couplers are listed below
150

Custom Sash Weight Calculation
All custom sash weight is calculated by taking the overall width and height of the sash and
assuming it is made completely from glass.
The calculation is as follows:
1m
1mm
1m
Calculate the glazing weight per m 2
1mm thickness of glass weight 2.5kg/m 2
To calculate the weight per m 2 of a glazed unit, add up the total thickness of the glass
e.g. 8.4/14/6 = 8+6mm of glass (14mm)
Multiply the total glass thickness by 2.5kg/m 2
e.g. 14 x 2.5 = 35kg/m 2
This is the glazed unit weight m 2
The following formulas can now be used to calculate the sash weight
Sash weight (kg) = glazing weight/m 2 (kg) x (sash width (m) x sash height (m))
Maximum sash weights are shown on the left hand side.
If heavier than 4-20-4 glazing is used, or sash sizes are increased using the ‘10% rule’ it’s important
to use the above formula to ensure maximum sash sizes are not exceeded.
Technical Information
Wind Loading
BS 6399-2:1997 gives dead and minimum
recommended imposed loads for use in designing
buildings. It applies to:
• new buildings and new structures
• alterations and additions to existing buildings
and structures
• existing construction on change of use
For windows manufactured at an abnormally
large size, or those, which will feature within a glass
facade, please consult the Liniar design office for
wind load calculations. Calculations are performed
in accordance with BS 6399-2:1997, loading for
buildings, code of practice for wind loads.
CE Marking
BS EN 14351-1:2006+A1:2010 Windows and Doors.
Product standard and performance characteristics.
Windows and external pedestrian doorsets
without resistance to fire and/or smoke leakage
characteristics.
• CE Marking became a legal requirement on
1st July 2013 for construction products supplied
within the EU and the UK, including windows and
external doorsets.
• By affixing the CE label, a manufacturer is
declaring conformity with all legal requirements
applicable to its products.
• CE Marking is a self certification scheme and
requires minimal involvement with independent
third parties.
It is the responsibility of the organisation supplying
the complete product to market to provide the CE
certification. Responsibility to comply and provide a
CE mark falls to the installer/organisation adding the
glazed unit to the frame. Failure to comply may result
in prosecution, fines and possible prison sentences.
152

Condensation
Water vapour is naturally present in the atmosphere.
Natural water content is increased by normal day to
day living – for example, activity that generates steam
such as cooking, bathing, laundering, boiling a kettle
and even breathing.
The water vapour remains undetectable while floating
in warm air – but upon contact with cold surfaces
such as windows, mirrors and tiles, condensation
occurs as the vapour turns into water droplets.
Traditional house construction allowed the escape
of this water vapour through natural ventilation,
including open flues of coal fires, air bricks and
ill-fitting windows and doors – however, the drive to
conserve energy and reduce heating costs has led
to the sealing of homes, resulting in trapped water
vapour and increased problems with condensation.
With Liniar’s highly energy efficient windows and
doors, condensation can even form on the outside
face of a double glazed unit, due to the external
surface being much colder than the inside. Certain
elevations of property can be more susceptible to
condensation e.g. north facing buildings.
Survey and Installation
Liniar strongly recommends that all installations
comply with the code of practice for installation of
PVCu window and door sets.
BS8213 gives recommendations for the surveying
and installation of non-load bearing windows and
external doorsets of any material, to be installed
vertically into the external face of buildings. It gives
guidance on the good practices necessary for the
successful surveying and installation of windows and
external doorsets in both new build and replacement
situations. It is primarily aimed at installations in
dwellings but much of the guidance given is relevant
to other types of installations.
For more information refer to BS 8213-4:2007.
preparation time.
Liniar decking is the perfect way to transform an outdoor
area – so choose the best quality, British-made system on
the market.
Well renowned for style, high quality, strength, low
maintenance and durability, there’s a whole host of
additional benefits to Liniar decking kits. Deckboards are
non-slip as class 1 fire rated for safety.
Liniar’s galvanised steel sub-frames, unparalleled in the
market, come part assembled for an easy build.
The only fully sculptured balustrade system on the
Plastic Piling
Page 178
Fencing
When it comes to fencing, PVCu may not be the obvious
choice for anyone who’s used to more traditional
materials, such as concrete and timber. But, as a growing
number of landscapers, commercial developers and
homeowners are discovering, it’s now the smart choice.
Advances in technology over recent years have made
fencing manufactured from PVCu a real alternative
to more traditional materials – and for good reason.
Light to carry, easy to install, weatherproof and virtually
maintenance free, lead-free PVCu fencing from Liniar
beats the competition hands down.
You may be forgiven for thinking plastic fencing is
too flexible to use as a border. However, the internal
chambers, along with steel reinforcing within each panel
of Liniar fencing, give it unparalleled strength, built to
stand up to even the strongest winds and storms.
Piling
Plastic piling is available ex-stock in a variety of lengths
and is manufactured under the Liniar brand in HL
Plastics’ own state-of-the-art factory in the heart of the
UK. Our extrusion facility in Derbyshire boasts the largest
mixing plant in Europe and continued investment keeps
HL Plastics and Liniar at the forefront of innovation.
We offer a versatile range of piling systems, including the
traditional standard pile shape that can be configured
as ‘Z-ribbed’ (for light use) or ‘box’ (for heavier use), and
the facility for tying back and creating 90° corners.
much attention to the exterior of the property
as the interior.
Built in 1910 in an authentic American colonial
architectural style by a businessman from the
US, this magnificent property is located in the
hamlet of Blackbrook on the edge of a World
Heritage site.
Splendidly restored by local entrepreneurs
Mike and Michele Wrigley, Hollywood
House resembles Graceland, the infamous
home of Elvis Presley. Oozing quality and
class throughout, all the rooms have been
decorated to keep in with the theme of the
name of the house.
“We’ve styled it on ’50s Hollywood, a time
of wonderful glamour and sophistication,
but we’ve done it in a subtle way,” says Julia
Lyne-Watt, who works for Mike and Michele’s
Ashbourne-based firm PMW Property,
specialising in commercial, residential and
holiday lets.
gardens that overlook the stunning Derwent
Valley, the glamour of the outside needed to
match the inside.
Liniar’s quality PVCu decking was the obvious
choice to ensure that guests would enjoy the
same level of luxury when relaxing on the
terrace, which boasts a plunge pool and large
hot tub.
“We chose the Liniar deckboards for a variety
of reasons,” says Julia. “The main one being the
aesthetics – the superb colour and woodgraineffect
brings the exterior in line with the style of
the rest of the property.
“But there also are lots of other advantages
to choosing it. The anti-slip surface means
it’s safe for our guests, especially ones taking
advantage of the hot tub and plunge pool!
“The deckboards are also strong, durable and
maintenance-free, meaning long term savings
regarding time and money – no treating,
sanding, staining or painting!
“The decked terrace adds the final touch
of class to what is an amazing property. We
couldn’t be happier with the results.”
To make the most of the beautiful location of
the property and to utilise the large, private
Accessories
A wide array of accessories offers an almost unlimited
range of design options, presenting the opportunity
to give a property a unique style.
Liniar decking kits are supplied with standard caps,
although enhancements are available for a more
individual appearance.
Liniar’s post caps provide an attractive finish to each
post, and if foiled balustrading is required you’ll be
delighted to know that the caps are also foiled for a
perfect finish.
Liniar decking kits are supplied with standard caps,
although gothic, ball or acorn caps are available to
add a striking effect.
And for an even more illuminating touch the posts
can be topped with lights. With two styles available
- globe and solar – they are perfect to make an
outdoor space the place to be on those warm
summer nights.
Skirting
Because skirting is utilised to complement the entirety
of your home and not just the deck, it isn’t possible to
be included in a kit, but can be easily purchased in
full lengths as an addition.
With a choice of ranch style (horizontal) or vertical,
Liniar skirting is available in the full range of colours
and finishes, providing the perfect match to the
balustrade to complete your installation.
Case Study - Log Pile
Log pile a godsend for garden rescue project
The original timber retaining structure in the garden
of a home in South Wales had rotted and fallen to
pieces, meaning that the deck and garden above
it was in serious danger of collapsing. The developer
called in a sub-contractor to rectify the issue and
specified Liniar log piling as the ideal product to
term and the homeowners were delighted with
the finished job because they look really nice too.
They have a wood polymer composite on the front
surface for added aesthetic appeal. I’d definitely
use Liniar log piling again and would highly
recommend it.”
replace the existing wooden support.
The Contracts Manager on the project commented:
“Liniar log piling proved an absolute godsend! Once
we’d removed all of the rotten wood the piling was
nice and easy to install – much quicker than building
a brick wall.
“We simply dug a trench then sat the piles in
concrete and, because they are hollow, it enabled
us to fill them with in-situ concrete mix to create an
incredibly sturdy structure. “As they’re plastic, they
won’t rot like timber, so they will be there for the long
Case Study - Tilt & Turn Windows
Creating a sustainable development for Leeds PFI
The Leeds City Centre regeneration PFI project spans
seven blocks of high-rise apartments totalling 550
dwellings, together with almost 1,500 low-rise and
new build houses. The project is being managed by
developer Keepmoat.
The project commenced in December 2013 and
was completed in late 2015. The Liniar system was
specified and is ideal for large-scale developments
such as these, as explained by the Liniar fabricator in
charge of the project:
“The Liniar system goes through the factory much
faster than other systems, so it’s more cost effective to
manufacture.
“It’s also much easier to achieve an ‘A’ rated window,
as we have to do less to it than we would with a
different system, such as enhanced (and more
expensive) glazing.
“Our installers also love installing Liniar as it’s been
designed to be fitter-friendly – so they’re on site for
less time overall, which helps with project completion
Sean Corcoran, Regional Director at Keepmoat,
commented:
“The Leeds PFI is a major scheme for both ourselves
and our client.
“We are responsible for all designs on the project
covering high rise new build and refurbishment,
sheltered accommodation, new build housing and
the refurbishment of varying types of non-traditional
housing.
“Combining the requirements of high standards
and tight timescales has meant ensuring our
sub-contractors have the resources and technical
expertise required.
“The lead-free and energy efficient aspects of the
Liniar profile were also important to us in creating a
sustainable development for Leeds PFI.
“All targets have been achieved and we look forward
to working on other schemes using Liniar profile in
the coming years.”
Case Study - EnergyPlus
EnergyPlus profile employed for job centre project.
When a five storey city centre building was marked
for conversion into flats, Liniar windows were specified
for various reasons – with energy efficiency and ease
of installation being big priorities.
The developers had specified anthracite grey on
white windows, manufactured with Liniar’s EnergyPlus
profile, which were top hung with toughened glass.
Pressed and vinyl coloured panels were also used for
a contemporary finish.
The property in question was a former job centre in
Pontefract town centre and the busy location meant
that scaffolding couldn’t be used to fit the windows –
not ideal on a five storey building!
Although the windows were fitted internally, installers
still had to hang out of the apertures on harnesses to
complete the job to high standards.
Spotters were also used at ground level to let the
fitters at the top know when any pedestrians were
passing, so they could stop what they were doing
until the coast was clear.
177 windows later and the developers were
delighted with the finished project - and the installers
were thrilled with the windows.
“We were very impressed with the design and the
clever features – the multiple chambers and the
reduction of steel requirement in particular.
“It’s led to lots of repeat work with the same
developers, including a post office conversion in
Sprotbrough.
This has been transformed into a large residential
property and café/wine bar, utilising cream windows
and patio doors for a stunning finish.”
Case Study - Casement Windows
Outstanding thermal performance for prestigious properties.
A prestigious project by North East developers
Cussins, in Northumberland, called for the very best
in all-round energy efficiency – making it vital that
they chose a window and door provider that could
deliver high quality products with the best possible
thermal performance.
Set in a truly unique location overlooking the spires
and rooftops of Alnwick to its famous Medieval
Castle and beyond, The Limes is an impressive
collection of more than 80 two to five bedroom
homes, built to the highest standards in sandstone
and heritage brick.
window and door frame. This trapping of air inside
the PVCu minimises the transfer of heat from
the inside of a home to the outside, providing
homeowners with a highly thermally efficient
dwelling and reducing their ongoing heating bills.
The cream frames are covered by Liniar’s 10 year
guarantee, and match the rest of the Liniar range
– so buyers can also add products to personalise
their new home. For example, a fully matching Liniar
conservatory with bi-folding doors could add extra
space as well as a versatile garden room to enjoy
the spectacular views.
The window and door frames specified on The Limes
project give a traditional twist to a contemporary
development.
The EnergyPlus profile used features six symmetrical
chambers running through the inside of each
Kirk Thompson, Construction Director for Cussins
commented: “We’re delighted with the window
installations at The Limes. With a project of this
nature, the highest quality is imperative – and the
cream windows add a luxury finish to the homes on
the development.”
Cost effective and environmentally friendly
Willmott Dixon is one of the UK’s largest privatelyowned
development and property support
companies, winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise
for Sustainable Development in 2014.
One recent project involved a 74-bedroomed care
home and 11 associated bungalows in Bedworth,
Coventry. Originated by Glancy Nicholls Architects
on behalf of their client, Housing 21, the project
specified grey PVCu casement windows for the care
home, to match existing aluminium features, and
white PVCu for the bungalows, as well as requiring
an interface with different materials, such as cedar
boarding to be jointly designed into the window
system.
run smoothly, without the usual site obstacles to
contend with.
The project was completed on time and within
budget, and looks set to lead to further projects
using Liniar profile in the future.
Matt Somers, Principal Surveyor for Willmott Dixon
said:
“The Liniar profile met all of the specified
requirements.
“Throughout the process the fabricator has been a
delight to work with, promoting a cost effective and
environmentally friendly option for the client which
met all their needs.”
The main requirements for the windows were:
• Cost effectiveness
• Secured by Design status
• Low U-values
• Overall life cyclic costs.
An open approach combined with a superb site set
up by the main contractor made the whole project
Our mission is to be recognised as a leading
force for quality and excellence in product
development - fusing industry experience
with innovation, sustainability and loyalty.
Aluminium windows were formerly the preferred choice for many
commercial installations, due to the structural strength and
size they could reach. With developments in the PVCu sector,
including ‘flush sash’ in-line frames, many developers have seen
the benefits of using cost effective PVCu windows and doors in
projects both large and small.
There are still projects that require aluminium, however, and the
Liniar design team began to address this with the launch in 2016
of its first aluminium system: Alumina.
The bi-folding door system spans sash heights of up to 2.5m and
sash widths up to 1.2m, with U-values as low as 1.2 W/m²K, thanks
to Alumina’s patented thermal lock.
Alumina doors have two distinct differences to other aluminium
doors on the market: they have been designed with a sculptured
shape that replicates the lines of Liniar PVCu windows;
and they can be supplied with a foiled finish.
Alumina product chart
28
As a result, projects can now achieve the best of both worlds –
cost effective and thermally efficient PVCu windows, with large
scale aluminium doors – for a perfect match.
Why Choose Aluminium?
aluminium [al-yuh-min-ee-uh-m] - noun
a light, malleable, ductile, silvery-white metallic element that resists corrosion;
the third most abundant element in the earth’s crust (8.1 per cent), occurring
only as a compound, principally in bauxite.
4

High strength to weight ratio
Aluminium is the perfect material for large
door apertures – as one of the lightest
engineering metals, it has a density of one
third that of steel.
Its strength to weight ratio is therefore far
superior to steel, meaning aluminium
is lighter and easier to transport and fit
whilst retaining supreme strength for large
glazed units.
Ideal for commercial projects
Larger apertures require larger windows
and doors, and aluminium provides the
strength and support for increasingly
larger sizes to be specified.
Retail outlets, restaurants and car
showrooms are all ideal locations for
aluminium bi-folding doors, especially
when combined with Alumina’s low
threshold option.
Resists weathering
When the surface of aluminium is exposed
to air, a protective oxide coating forms.
This oxide layer is corrosion resistant and
can be further enhanced with surface
treatments such as anodising.
Alumina products are treated with either
a powder coated colour, or a factoryfitted
foiled finish, making them truly
weatherproof and built to last.
Aesthetically pleasing
Due to the strength of aluminium, wider
and taller panes of glass are achievable.
This means a higher glazing to frame ratio,
creating large expanses of glass for a
cutting edge appearance.
The uniquely sculptured frames of Alumina
offer a perfect match to Liniar PVCu
windows whilst allowing for greater sizes –
offering clients the best of both worlds.
Supreme security
The ModLok concept, first seen in the
Liniar patio suite and PVCu bi-fold system,
has been carried over to the Alumina
range, which has its own unique modular
lock and combined thermal insert.
Alumina products include high security
features such as shootbolts, anti-lift
features and anti-bump cylinders,
achieving PAS24 accreditation with ease.
Sustainable
Aluminium is a good reflector of both
visible light and heat. Furthermore, its
recyclability is unparalleled.
When recycled aluminium is compared
to virgin aluminium, there is no
degradation in properties – and recycling
requires just 5% of the input energy
that’s needed to produce virgin
aluminium metal.
5

Alumina Colour Range
Alumina doors are supplied as standard in plain white, black or grey powder
coated finishes. Uniquely, Alumina can also be ordered with a wide range of
different coloured precision factory-fitted foils, on one or both faces, ensuring a
perfect match to Liniar PVCu windows.
Why Specify Alumina?
The only true aluminium system on the market designed to match perfectly
with PVCu windows, Alumina also holds its own as a beautiful stand-alone
aluminium residential, French or bi-folding door.
8

British made
Alumina products are designed in the heart of
the UK by Liniar and manufactured both in-house
and by a small handful of carefully selected
specialist aluminium fabricators around the UK.
Continued investment in the factory, facilities,
research and development helps keep Liniar at
the forefront of innovation.
Fully accredited
The Liniar factory is accredited with ISO 9001 for
quality standards, and all products are subjected
to an exhaustive testing process, both before and
after launch. A full-sized Alumina bi-fold system
was independently tested to PAS24, passing with
flying colours at the first attempt and achieving
Part Q compliance and Secured By Design status.
Choice of thresholds
Alumina threshold options have been designed
in-house, including a Part M compliant low
threshold, measuring just 23.5mm high. The 2.5m x
1.2m aluminium sash bi-fold was found to beat the
requirements for both air and water tightness by
more than double the most severe pressures within
BS6375 Part 1 – even with a low threshold.
Best of both worlds
The Alumina suite has been designed to match
fully with the Liniar PVCu range of products –
not only in its shape but also due to the foiled
finishes available. This means your project can be
specified with a mix of fully matching PVCu and
aluminium products, giving a beautiful result with
a single point of guarantee.
9

Maximum and Minimum Sizes
The maximum sizes stated below are based on 28mm 4-20-4 standard double
glazed units within frames manufactured to the reinforcement guidelines.
The minimum & maximum sash sizes are shown below for the Alumina door system.
These have been calculated for sashes manufactured to the size limitations and glazed with different glass
combinations.
Maximum 6-6-0 outer frame = 6m
Minimum 2-2-0, 4-4-0, 6-6-0 sash size = 700mm
Any glazing combination used must not exceed the maximum sash weight of 60kg
Accreditations and Testing
It’s important to Liniar to prove its products are backed by the highest
standards, and an ongoing testing programme ensures that Alumina
remain fully compliant – often ahead of legislation.
Alumina doors have been subjected to rigorous
testing and have been confirmed as satisfying the
demanding requirements of PAS:24 and Secured
by Design, for your customers’ peace of mind.
SBD
The innovative, patented thermal polyamide
Secured by Design status is awarded to products
locking mechanism included in every Alumina
designed with exceptional security features as
door helps with thermal efficiency and has been
their main priority. Liniar products that qualify
certified by independent third party testing to
to hold this certification are tested to meet the
meet these strict security requirements.
requirements of the Association of Chief Police Officers,
PAS 24
This accreditation is part of the British Standards
system and shows the product has been
subjected to a series of tests, demonstrating
enhanced security performance, air and water
tightness and wind loading to BS6375.
BS 6375
Parts 1, 2 and 3 of British Standard BS6375 are
the requirements for performance of windows
and doors. This includes weather performance
testing, inclusive of wind loading, functionality
testing and cyclic testing.
PAS:24 & Part Q
Part Q regulations introduced in 2015, state that all new ground floor dwellings and flats, together with new
extensions, must meet strict criteria: “provision must be made to resist unauthorised access to any dwelling.
In essence, doors must be “manufactured to a design that has been shown by test to meet the security
requirements of British Standards PAS:24:2012” – so as the Alumina door range has already been accredited with
this standard, they are fully Part Q compliant.
Quality assured
All of Liniar’s operations have been assessed by the British Standards Institute and confirmed to meet the
exacting requirements of ISO:9001, so you can be assured that your foiled pre-fabricated Alumina doors will be
manufactured to the highest standards.
12

Weather Performance
The Alumina bi-folding door from Liniar has been tested at its maximum door size with a thermally broken low
threshold, achieving incredible results.
The 2.5m x 1.2m aluminium sash bi-fold was found to beat the minimum requirements for both air and water
tightness by more than double the most severe pressures within BS6375 Part 1 – even with a low threshold; unusual
for a bi-fold of this size.
Liniar classes the following as “severe weather
performance:”
When an installation falls within the category of
“severe“, Liniar reccommends:
• Coastal locations (100m above sea level)
• Exposed locations (long stretches of open
level country)
• Open out only door configurations
• Rebated frame threshold (ABF091)
• Consult Liniar technical/design & development
for enhanced gasket configurations.
Thermal Performance
Alumina bi-folds can achieve a U-value as low as 1.2 W/m²K with triple glazing.
Other combinations of glazing can be used – please see table below for an indication of the U-values achievable
Case Study - Alumina Bi-Fold Door
Alumina and PVCu - a perfect match
A property renovation in Essex was the perfect
opportunity to showcase the perfect match between
Liniar PVCu windows and the Alumina aluminium
bi-folding door.
Having chosen replacement casement windows
and residential doors in Irish Oak when they first
moved into the property, the homeowners had
also applied for planning permission to build an
extension.
The original requirement was for large French doors
with sidelights, as the belief was that PVCu bi-folds
would not allow for wide panes of glass. However,
when the installer spotted the Alumina bi-fold, with its
matching sculptured beads, he knew it was ideal for
the project.
A true aluminium bi-folding system, Alumina also
offered great thermal efficiency, thanks to its
innovative thermal lock – and as it could uniquely
be foiled to match the window system, the whole
project would benefit from seamless aesthetics.
The homeowner agreed immediately, and ordered
a three-pane Alumina bi-fold with Irish Oak foiled
The installer commented:
“I found the Alumina bi-fold very straightforward to
install. It compares very well with other bi-folds I’ve
fitted, and the fact it comes from a trusted systems
house gives me confidence that it’s been properly
tested and won’t cause me any issues.
“Alumina is extremely well designed, with finishing
touches that make it stand out, such as the
innovative folding keys which greatly reduce the
possibility of damaging the doors if left in situ. And
the fact it’s foiled and sculptured to match the Liniar
window suite gives it a distinct advantage over other
bi-folds!”
The homeowners agreed:
“We weren’t sure about a bi-fold door at first – but as
our installer had made such a fantastic job of our
windows and doors, we trusted him completely. As
soon as he showed us Alumina, with its low U-value
and matching Irish Oak finish, we were sold!
“We’ve had lots of compliments from visitors as the
Alumina bi-folding doors look amazing.”
Alumina Door Configurations
The Alumina door range has a wide variety of options
when it comes to sizes and opening configurations –
available from 1 to 7 panes wide.
Our door pane numbering works like this:
• The first number shows the number of doors in total
within the frame.
• The second number shows the majority of doors
folding back to either left or right.
• The third number shows the balance of doors
opening in the opposite direction.
So, a 4-3-1 bi-folding door would be four panes wide,
with three doors folding back to one side of the frame,
and a single opening door on the other.
be powder coated or foiled in any woodgrain finish
Low threshold- optional Part M compliant
aluminium low threshold is just 23.5mm as its
