PRESIDENT
President’s Message
The Heat
Is On
If you are on
the golf course as
much as I am . . .
protect yourselves.
Joe O’Connell,
President,
SCSCAI Board
of Directors
It is getting officially “hot.” Be careful with
the heat, and use a lot of sunscreen. I have
suffered many dermatologist visits with
removal and freezing of sun spots. If you are on
the golf course as much as I am (not as much as
before the Board), or out on our tennis or
pickleball courts, protect yourselves. Only softball
players don’t have to worry about the sun.
e rest of us need to be careful.
Members of your Board of Directors are
not perfect people, but they are volunteers, who
spend a great deal of their time trying to do the
right things for this Association. If you strongly
disagree with a decision or many decisions,
maybe you should think about running for the
Board next year. is next election is the start
of the three-year terms. We need honest, hardworking
people to get on the Board.
If there are issues you are interested in, start
by going to the respective committee – for example,
the Finance Committee for the budget,
or Golf Oversight for course-related issues. e
Common Area Properties Committee reviews
all items where signi cant funds are spent for
our Association. When you attend a Board
meeting because you an item on the agenda, it
is too late to simply state that you do like it.
Most of our residents are pretty happy with
the actions of the past Boards. Your volunteers
have kept the cost of living here in Sun City very
low for what we offer. Please consider being
one of the volunteers and sign up this fall.
Incarcerated
Burglars
Tell What
Does/Doesn’t
Stop Them
Part II
If a homeowner
has a big, loud
dog most burglars
stay away. Smaller
dogs don’t seem to
bother them.
Barbara Holden
CPC/Neighborhood
Watch Committee
Chairwoman
(Editor’s note: This is part II of a story that first appeared in the May Link. It was compiled by Link editorial board
member Ellen Greenspan from more expansive coverage on community crime that aired in April on KGW-TV in
Portland, Ore. To read the full version of the story, visit the community tab of the Link’s website, suncitylink.com.)
Kyle Iboshi, a senior investigative reporter
for KGW-TV in Portland, Ore., questioned
86 inmates currently serving time for
burglary in Portland’s Department of Corrections.
e burglars responded to questions detailing
how they broke into, as well as what they were
looking for during home burglaries. What the
reporter learned could help keep others from
becoming a target.
Did posted home security signs deter you?
Burglars had mixed opinions about home security
systems. Some burglars said signs didn’t
faze them. Others knew how to disable alarms
or avoid setting them off, but most said they
would leave immediately if an alarm did go off.
If there was a visible security camera, would it
keep you from breaking in? Burglars agreed
that security cameras were a deterrent, but
added that a camera also signaled valuables
inside the home.
If you heard a radio or TV inside the home,
would you still break in? Most burglars feared
someone might be home if they heard a radio
or TV and said they wouldn’t break in. “Absolutely
not,” wrote a burglar.
Did you ever do surveillance on a home, and
if so what were you trying to learn? “Who
lives in the home, what are their weekday
schedules (weekends are too unpredictable),
what do they drive, is there a dog,” wrote one
inmate. “What time the house would be
empty,” answered another.
Cash and credit cards are the ultimate nd.
Jewelry and guns are almost as good as cash. “If
I got guns, they were easy to sell,” said a former
burglar. Laptops, phones and other electronics
are easy to take and can quickly be sold. “ e
main thing I hunted for in a home was a
removable safe or locked box,” one burglar
wrote. “I would leave everything else to get a
safe that I could carry.”
Burglars aren’t going to remove a heavy safe
from the home. Large safes and safes bolted
into the oor or wall are too difficult to deal
with. “Safes that cannot be picked up or carried
off are too much work for possibly no reward.”
What can homeowners do to avoid being burglarized?
“Alert police if you see something suspicious
at a neighbor’s home. Know your
neighbors so you recognize different people in
the neighborhood. Be neighborly. Neighbors
can be one of the best security systems. Have a
true neighborhood watch,” recommended a convicted
burglar.
Hole-in-One Counts on Mini Golf Course, Too
A hole-in-one is a hole in one, right? If that’s true, then sinking three
hole-in-ones on the same course in the same day has got to be some kind
of record, and props need to be paid. At least that’s what Sharon and
Paul Beilman, right, thought when their friend Bob Castille, left, managed
the feat on April 14 at the mini golf course at Mountain Shadows.
We couldn’t agree more. Congratulations, Bob!
SCSCAI WORKS
BOD Members Are SCSCAI
Volunteers
Day-to-day operations of SCSCAI are the
responsibility of a professional staff that
reports to the Executive Director.
In this world, it seems everyone has a
boss and SCSCAI is no different. Executive
Director Paul Henderson reports to
the Board of Directors – nine members
who are elected by homeowners. Unlike
Mr. Henderson’s employees, the BOD are
all volunteers. In fact, according to BOD
President Joe O’Connell, Board members
put in as many as 35 hours each week performing
their duties. Collectively, they
average 600 hours a month. You might
think about that the next time you interact
with a Board member.
Continuing along, Sun City’s organizational
chart looks like this: The Board of
Directors, the Executive Director and nine
department managers who head up building
maintenance, community services,
community standards, fitness, food and
beverage, golf course maintenance, golf
course operations, landscape and link.
All available positions, some full time
with appropriate benefits, others part
time, are listed on the Association’s
website, www.scscai.com. To view current
job openings and their complete job
descriptions, head to the Sun City Info tab
and locate Employment, which is the third
option on the left-side column. You also
will find an employment application link
on that page. Job postings change weekly.
Positions are open to all qualified applicants,
including Sun City residents.
Former BOD President David Steinman’s
Fire House Legacy Lives On
More than 50 business colleagues, friends and residents turned
out to honor the memory of former SCSCAI Board President
David Steinman on April 26 as Las Vegas City Councilman
Stavros Anthony dedicated Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Station
107’s community room to one of Sun City’s favorite sons.
Pointing to guests gathered around the engine bay, Councilman
Anthony talked about how during the station’s construction,
David could often be found at the site.
“I believe he was out here every single day to make sure
the station was done to his speci cations and that it was
done correctly,” he said. “And this is what we ended up with
– a beautiful re house.”
When thinking about how he could best honor his friend
in Sun City, Councilman Anthony said that the idea of naming
the station’s community room came to mind.
e idea was one of several proposed to the city following
David’s passing in January.
One by one, several speakers took to the podium recalling
memories of their dear friend, including Las Vegas City
Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Fire
Chief William McDonald and Mountain View Presbyterian
Church Pastor David W. Dendy.
BOD President Joe O’Connell shared a poignant memory
of how he and David attended the grand opening of
Palm Valley’s 9th hole, which had to be redesigned following
the re station’s ground breaking.
“David was the rst to drive off the 9th tee and I was
fortunately the second,” Joe said.
“David was a very good friend of mine. He’s the main reason
I’m on the Board today and the No. 1 reason why I got
involved. He loved his family and his beautiful wife, whom
he talked about all the time.”
With that, Councilman Anthony welcomed David’s wife,
Madeleine to the podium for the last word.
“ ank you all for coming today,” she said. “ ank you for
honoring my husband.”
Do You Know?
How Age Matters in Sun City
“Even though many new residents are in the younger age
brackets, the average age has remained virtually the same,”
said longtime BOD member Ken Caroccia. In fact, compared
to the membership in 2008, Sun City’s current membership
is only 2 years older even though nine years has
passed. How is that possible? The answer points to how
many of us are living longer.
Age No. of No. of
Bracket Residents 2008 Residents 2017
Under 55 438 299
55-60 643 526
60-64 1,364 997
65-70 2,093 1761
71-74 2,531 2,218
75-80 2,455 2,297
81-85 1,874 1,938
85-90 853 1,337
90-94 211 561
95-100 30 122
100+ 3 20
Notice the trend: In the past nine years, the number of residents
in the 95-100 age bracket has increased more
than 400 percent. Where we only had three residents
over 100 in 2008, we now have 20, a 700 percent
increase. The same could be said of the 85 to 95 brackets,
where there has been significant increases.
Throughout the years, the ratio of men to women has
remained constant – 45 to 55 percent. Similarly, the average
age of our male population has consistently been two
years older than our women, 77 versus 75, today. In 2008,
it was 74 versus 72.
FITNESS: Team Members Find Fun, Innovative Ways to
he Fitness Department of Sun City Summerlin Community Association, Inc., touches the lives of roughly 1,500
Tresidents a day. Our mission is to help residents stay healthy and active for a longer and fuller life. We
pursue that goal through two avenues – our fitness centers and our health and wellness programs.
OUR TEAM
The lifeblood of the Fitness Department is our people! Every
member of the fitness team is an example of active, vibrant
living. You can catch many of our team members during
their off-duty time swimming, playing sports, dancing,
serving with community health organizations, teaching
and more.
Kristie McWhorter, our fitness manager, holds a master’s
degree in exercise physiology and has been with us for 10
years. She is also a certified senior fitness specialist, an
ACE-certified personal trainer and a group exercise
instructor, as well as a functional aging specialist. She is
an active health ambassador within our community as well
as outside. One of her passions has been improving balance
and falls prevention. She has spearheaded falls prevention
programs in Sun City for several years running.
She also represents Sun City Summerlin as a member of
the Nevada Goes Falls Free Coalition and promotes falls
prevention in the Las Vegas community.
Heather Senn is our assistant to the fitness manager. She
is a certified health education specialist, holds a bache-
lor’s degree in public health and is a physical therapist
assistant. She is the main coordinator of the health and wellness
programs, including the monthly health education
seminars and the annual health fair. Heather began a
new diabetes empowerment education program for residents
this year that made a great impact in many of our resident’s
lives.
Charli Douglass, fitness specialist, is a certified senior fitness
specialist and ACE-certified personal fitness trainer
and group exercise instructor. You may have caught up with
her at a fitness center, or read one of her “Charli’s Corner”
monthly features in the Link that focus on proper technique,
types of workout plans and making exercise science
easier to understand.
Pam Shields, fitness specialist, is certified senior fitness
specialist, an ACE-certified personal fitness trainer and a
group exercise instructor as well as a functional aging specialist.
She also is a member of the Alzheimer’s Association
Speakers Bureau. She oversees our fitness department
equipment maintenance program, keeping our exercise equipment
in top shape. You’ll also be seeing more of her as she
launches the “Use It or Lose It: Brain Health Program,” a
fitness classes at the Desert Vista Fitness Center. These include Sit
& Be Fit, Body Sculpting and Core Strength & Balance. Heather joins
Pam and Charli in teaching equipment orientation classes for residents
at each fitness center, showing how the equipment operates, important
safety features and talking about creating basic workout plans.
Our team also includes a top-drawer crew of 40 fitness/pool
monitors. They make a busy, multi-faceted job look easy. One thing
you may not know is that while they keep things humming along
with a smile, they are also keeping a keen watch out for your safety
and well-being while you are enjoying the facilities. All monitors are
trained in CPR, first aid and basic water safety, and they all serve as
“first responders” for residents and guests experiencing health
issues while using the fitness centers. While we would wish they
never had to use that knowledge, we salute our hometown heroes
whose quick thinking and action has helped prevent more than a
few serious situations for residents and guests over the years.
FITNESS CENTERS
Our four fitness centers are our most visible, tangible aspect of the
Fitness Department. No matter where you live in Sun City Summerlin,
there is a fitness center within a couple of miles of you that offers a
menu of options to support an active lifestyle. Each center boasts at
least one pool and spa, and through the entire network of centers,
residents have access to tennis, basketball, racquetball, pickleball,
bocci ball, miniature golf, walking paths, cardio and resistance
training equipment, and group fitness classes.
Unlike our social halls, fitness centers are private
facilities and non-residents must be accompanied by a
If you’re looking to increase your understanding
of brain health and promote a brain-healthy
lifestyle, this workshop is for you.
The four-session course will provide you
with all the necessary tools and tips. Numerous
studies have shown that brain health is multifaceted.
It is not just about exercise, nutrition
or playing brain games. If you are looking to
support thinking skills and reduce the risk of
serious memory loss, you must engage in different
ways. This includes a focus on physical,
mental and emotional health.
The Use It or Lose It! program, based on the
Cleveland Clinic’s 6 Pillars of Brain Health, consists
of a series of four two-hour workshops.
The workshops include a mixture of lecture,
discussion, activities and exercises aimed at
improving the long-term brain health in
cognitively healthy adults. Because the program
focuses on prevention and not treatment, participants
must be free of significant memory
impairment, such as diagnosis of Alzheimer’s
or a related memory disorder, or other
cognitive compromises that may impact their
ability to benefit from the course.
ist

esident with a current Association ID to use the facilities as
a guest. All households are allotted 24 guest passes per year.
As an active adult, 55+ community, fitness centers are not open
for children under the age of 19, except for dedicated times
for children accompanied by resident adults to use pool
facilities at Desert Vista, Mountain Shadows and Pinnacle.
Some of the most important questions around our Fitness
facilities have to do with some other accessibility issues:
w Caregiver Access – Contact the fitness manager with a
doctor’s letter and she will guide you through the process
of getting your caregiver set up to access the center with
you. They will be able to get a special ID card and you can
preserve your guest passes for family and friends.
• Longer-Stay Family Caregivers – Contact the fitness
manager with a doctor’s letter and she will authorize temporary
access to a family member/s caring for a resident
for an extended period.
• Medical Discharge to Community Exercise – Need to
bring a physical or occupational therapist, a sports medicine
physician, or a cardiac rehab specialist with you to help
you set up a post-rehabilitation exercise program? Have
the provider contact the fitness manager ahead of time to
authorize their visit. You will need to use a guest pass for
the visit as certain liabilities are at stake. Obtaining prior
approval helps ensure a smooth, professional experience
for this important part of your plan of care. Additionally, by
having your healthcare professional speak with us, we can
exchange valuable information about other resources that
will support your continued recovery during the transition.
• Support Animals – You can apply for a special permit
from the Administration Department. You’ll need supporting
documentation from a physician. After approval, your
animal will officially join you on your Association ID.
HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAMS
Less visible but no less important, our health and wellness
programs complement our fitness centers by empowering
residents to greater health, function and well-being. We
support a healthy community by partnering with about 60
local healthcare providers to bring timely, relevant and
accurate health information to you for monthly screenings,
seminars and workshops. Through these relationships, in
2016 alone, Sun City Summerlin was able to host 55 health
education seminars completely free of charge to residents!
Our Annual Fall Health Fair and Flu Shot Clinic boasts
an average attendance of 900 residents, and our Annual
Spring Walk brings out about 100 runners and walkers.
THAT LITTLE EXTRA
In addition to all this already great stuff, the Fitness
Department contracts with an on-site licensed massage
therapist, Deborah Butterfield, whose massage studio is
located at the Pinnacle Fitness Center; and two nationally
certified personal fitness trainers, Daria Clarke and Cece
Ceccarini. Both of these amenities take Sun City
Summerlin to the next level of service for our residents.
Have you heard this one:
“Good Fences Make
Good Neighbors?”
Boundaries help us
respect each other and
get along better. One such
boundary in our fitness centers is our 30-minute courtesy
time limit on cardio equipment, which includes warm-up
and cool-down time. Remember, the person waiting could
be you – so treat others as you wish to be treated. You can
always try out a different machine to get extra time – and
get a fitness boost in the bargain!
Some Quality
Time
Security Patrol
offers a new
spin on
date night
R
emember when you married the person
you loved and the kids came along? If
you were lucky, Mom got the sitter, Dad
shaved the 5 o’clock shadow and you both had
a date night – using your rst names while
enjoying a glass of wine or beer. If not date
night, then maybe when the kids were asleep,
at the end of the week, there was time for cocktails
and catch-up.
who ag the patrol car with questions, along
with other duties. e 1,600-hour drivers get to
see the deep orange, brilliant pink and purple
sunsets in winter. In the twilight hours, these
volunteers begin checking on Association properties.
Joseph and Rousana Tao drive the 2000-hour
shift (eight to midnight.) “We have been driving
for four years. We give back to the community
Chief
Well, now you are retired and the kids live a
few states away, and there is time. Security
Patrol offers a new spin on date night. In fact,
about 20 couples are members of Security
Patrol, and they drive together for four hours
once a week.
Couples who enjoy the magni cent desert
sunrise drive the 4 to 8 a.m. shift. Murray and
Linda Rosner have been driving the 0400 shift
for six years. “We owe something to this community,
and there is a sense of adventure driving
at 4 a.m.,” said Murray. “Surprising things
can show up, like a 911 light or a suspicious situation.
Sometimes, Linda and I will go to
breakfast at the Tavern at the Falls after our
shift is over.”
Early morning-risers drive 8 a.m. to noon.
Together, they check homes for neighbors on
vacation. Afternoon drivers keep an eye out for
suspicious vehicles; talk with the neighbors
doing this,” said Rousana. “We enjoy working
with the other drivers on this shift. ey are
nice people.” Joseph is also on Security’s IT
staff.
e 2000 shift isn’t easy. Security Patrol
volunteers knock on doors, letting residents
know their garage door is open. Other duties
include checking Association property doors
(all 203 doors, plus gates and restroom doors.)
Perhaps not much catching-up conversation
goes on during this shift.
e midnight to 4 a.m. drivers are busy
keeping our community safe while most residents
are sleeping. ey check out suspicious
vehicles, the 911 lights and the occasional open
garage door.
Most important, drivers on all shifts are
neighbors helping neighbors. Come, join us.
Nice people work here.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE
ARTHUR PATTON
Another Day, Another Dollop in the Merchant Marine
It wasn’t very glamorous duty; it was a job. One that
had to be done because without it, the invasion of
France in 1944 and the island-hopping campaigns of
the Pacific would have been virtually impossible. That
job was serving in the Merchant Marine. It was vital
because nearly all the troops and every truck, tank,
cannon, and the bullets, shells and fuel that they
required, was transported by ship — and the enemy
knew that. A greater percentage of those serving aboard
merchant ships in WWII died in the line of duty than all of
the other U.S. Services – 1 in 26 mariners.
One of those serving
mariners was
Sun City resident and
Military & Friends
Club member Arthur
Patton. When asked
why he joined the
Merchant Marine,
especially in light
of the casualty
figures, he replied,
“We didn’t know
how dangerous it
was.” (All through
the war the government
minimized the
damage being done
to our shipping to
prevent the enemy
from learning how
effective the submarine attacks were.) “I was about to
turn 18 and the draft was waiting. A friend of mine had
signed up for the Merchant Marine and told me the pay
was four times higher than the Navy’s, so I joined just
before my birthday in 1944.”
Arthur served on a number of ships in both the
Atlantic and Pacific, mostly troop transports. He sailed
from New York to Liverpool, England, and Le Harve,
France, bringing fresh troops to that theater before
transiting the Panama Canal to support the fighting in
the Philippines, Guam and Saipan.
The ships he served on weren’t the famous ones we
all know. They were the S.S. General John Pope, the S.S.
Cody Victory, the S.S. Marine Dragon and the S.S.
Sheephead. Names that were little known then, except to
those who sailed on them and certainly forgotten now.
Both Arthur and his ships were among the lucky ones;
they never became a part of the 1 in 26 who died.
“Most of the time, I served on troop transports. When
the war ended, our job did not. All of those troops had to
be ferried home. So, we made runs from Japan to Seattle.
Later, we returned
to the East Coast to
bring German POWs
home to Bremen,
Germany. That may
have been the greatest
crossing. I had
five POWs assigned
to help me in my
duties as storekeeper.
One of them
spoke excellent
English and that
made my job much
easier.”
Arthur left the
Merchant Marine in
1947. Like so many
of his generation, the
war is just a distant
memory. He moved on, became an auto mechanic,
married, raised a family and eventually came to Las
Vegas in 1962, finishing his career with Nevada Energy.
Arthur Patton as he served in the Merchant Marine. Arthur today displaying
a photo of his favorite ship, the S.S. General John Pope, a troop
transport.
Sun City Couples Committed to Supporting Golf Program
Sun City Golf Ambassador Committee members are, clockwise from top left, Amos and Rita Barcus, Dave and Chris
Klee, Debby and Barry Smith, Eileen and Bob de Doelder, Margy and Carl Johnson, Mona and Larry Waisanen, Mick
and Luka Jadlowski, and Lois McCallum and Peter Arfman.
Bet you didn’t know that for the past six years eight
couples have been acting as ambassadors to folks
from all over the country and other parts of the world.
Why?
Think back. We all moved to SCS from someplace, and
making that big decision was not easy and would directly
affect the rest of our lives. Various factors influenced us,
but we had some common things to consider: Will we like
it? Will we fit in? Will it be hard to make friends?
In 2010, a golf marketing ad hoc committee came up
with the idea that, as a golf community, we needed to be
more competitive with the newer, developer-marketed
retirement projects. Otherwise, we would face a
substantial reduction in the proportion of SCS residents
that support our golf programs. Reasons: Many of our
existing, older residents were playing less or moving
away and potential new golfing residents were
relocating elsewhere without even knowing about SCS.
As a matter of interest, in the early 90s we had
approximately 2,500 golfing residents, whereas
currently that number is closer to 1,000. While outside
play has taken up some of the slack from a financial
standpoint, the community still needs to increase the
percentage of people that live and play golf here in order
to properly support our golf facilities in the future.
So, the Golf Ambassador Committee stepped in. The
idea was to provide a resource to those looking for a
retirement community with lots of amenities, particularly
golf. A link was set up on the SCSCAI website where
potential homeowners could request information and
talk with a resident to get a feel for what it’s like to live
here. The Ambassador Committee eventually grew to
eight couples and more will be needed to handle the
growing number of boomers that we expect will be
coming our way.
During the past six years, ambassadors have served
more than 180 people. Of those, we have 50 new
residents. Many of the others could still move here, as
they may be waiting on the sale of their home or
remaining in their current job for a while longer. These
are active people who not only enhance our golf
programs, but are also taking a leadership role in the
future of our community.
Special thanks to SCSCAI BOD President Joe
O’Connell, for his help in bringing the initial idea to
fruition; Jim Neighbors, SCSCAI head golf pro-fessional,
who assists ambassadors with golf and lunch
arrangements; Tom Burt, who has been a big help in
coordinating our Internet activity; and, of course, our
ambassador couples who give a minimum of a full day to
be with the invitees, as well as much preplanning and
follow up.
For those of us involved, we receive much joy and
satisfaction by having the opportunity to help others with
their very important decision. A win! Win!
Following are highlights from the April 11
meeting:
Old Business: Sun City resident Henrietta
Rapp asked about bocce court shades that were
installed at Sun Shadows. Henrietta said that they
do not offer enough shade for the players. After
considerable discussion, it was decided that Ken
Caroccia, CAP chairman, Dennis McGrew,
SCSCAI building maintenance manager and
Henrietta would re-assess the shades after the
meeting. Next, following a recommendation by
SCSCAI landscape manager Louis Darling, the
committee unanimously passed a motion to remove
the re pit at Desert Vista. e re pit has
not been used for 18 years.
New Business: Brandon Balek, SCSCAI building
maintenance supervisor, reported that LED
lights will be installed at all three buildings at
Mountain Shadows. e original estimate a year
ago was for approximately $50,000. Since then,
prices have dropped and Sun City is now looking
at an estimate closer to $30,000.
w e pools are all in compliance with the new
Clark County Health District requirements.
w e insurance inspector will be joining the
building inspectors.
w e curb drop-off area in front of the Highland
Falls entrance is being evaluated for expansion
as the area is often blocked by delivery trucks, etc.
After considerable discussion, Paul Henderson,
SCSCAI’s executive director, Dennis and Brandon
will look into the idea. A call will be
placed to the re marshall as there is a
re hydrant in the area.
Staff Update:
w Louis is rocking the greenbelt at Sun
City and Lake Mead boulevards, which
also includes nishing the corner area.
w e contractor for the Mountain
Shadows pool shade cover is still trying
to get the permit. e city has asked for
an additional survey.
w Work is progressing on the Mountain
Shadows enclosure. e contractor
has framed the area and the new AC
unit is expected soon.
w SCSCAI Fitness Manager Kristie
McWhorter reported that the shades at
Desert Vista and the Pinnacle tness centers are
being replaced. Pool furniture was replaced at
the Pinnacle. More umbrellas have been ordered
for Desert Vista. Sun Shadows will receive more
lounges on the patio for residents to use.
Team Leader Reports:
Allan Bell inspected with Louis and reported
that there are many trees in the community that
have broken branches and need to be looked at.
BOD member Karl Wiedemann reported
that the front entrance of Mountain Shadows
needs more lighting. Paul Henderson talked
with the city, and reported that the lights closest
to the entrance have been turned up so the
lighting should be better.
It was brought to the committee’s attention
that the framed photos in the card rooms at
Mountain Shadows are very small. Decorating
sub-com-mittee member Rhoda Ring will look
into updating the photos after the lighting is
changed.
e meeting was adjouned at 10:42 a.m.

CHARTERED CLUBS
CLUB SPOTLIGHT
KRAFTY KRITTERS
Club Crafts a Valuable Service
In 1992, Kathy Walls began the Krafty Kritters Club in a small
room at Mountain Shadows. In 1994, Kathy helped
design the club’s current facility at the then new Desert
Vista Community Center. The members worked on all
different sorts of crafts, which were sold at the store
located inside Desert Vista (currently occupied by the
Fitness Department). Along with Eleanor Wenzel, one of
the founders of the Club, Sally Edwards, Sue Lawrence
and Dee Moshy are longtime members who supply residents
with invaluable experience.
Krafty Kritters’ studio is open for members to work on
their projects on Mondays, from 9 a.m. to noon and
Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. The Club began with about 50
members and has pretty much stayed consistent at that
number.
One of Krafty Kritters’ categories of creativity includes
the tole painters, members who paint on canvas, wood and
various other objets d’art. Tole painters meet in the studio
on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Along with crafts, the Club does crocheting, knitting,
scrapbooking and painting. The members sell some items
in the window of their room, as well as at the annual arts &
crafts show at Desert Vista. They make the very popular
water bottle holders out of plastic grocery bags that the
Red Rock Canyon Gift Store sells for the club.
Jeanene O’Shay is one of the club’s members who
collects many of the items that are donated to benefit
homeless teens, newborn babies and nursing home
clients.
Krafty Kritters’ general meeting takes place on the first
Saturday of the month, 9 a.m., at Desert Vista. Members
learn what’s going on and everyone is invited to check out
what’s going on. According to Club President Marilyn
Pittman, many ladies join because they are new to Sun City
and want to meet people and share ideas. Marilyn says the
club takes donations of materials, and if they can’t use
something they find another club that can.
CLUB SPOTLIGHT
ZOOM ZOOM CLUB
Exercise in Disguise
The newest club at Sun City Summerlin, the
Zoom Zoom Club, was formed to offer residents
a well-rounded Zumba® experience. Unlike
single-focus classes/workouts, Zumba® class participants
get a combination of aerobics, interval training
and resistance training. The workouts provide three
results – 1. High calorie output, you can burn up to
1,000 calories during class and continue to burn
calories for up to four hours after class even while
resting; 2. Cardiovascular benefits; 3. Total body
toning, you look and feel better. Zumba® classes
are exercise in disguise. It’s so much fun you don’t
even know you’re exercising,so you want to do it
again and again!
Near the end of 2016, residents who participated
regularly in a water class had a substitute instructor
who taught an Aqua Zumba® class. They asked Teresa
Gusel, a class member and Zumba® class participant,
if they could have a regular Aqua Zumba®
class. When Teresa asked Zumba® instructor Ruth
Cuti if she could teach such a class, they both
realized that it would be most economical for
residents if all Zumba® classes could be offered in
a Zumba® club. Ruth, who already was licensed and
teaching Zumba® and Zumba® Gold, traveled to
Phoenix to become licensed in Aqua Zumba® and
Zumba Toning®. Because of copyright laws, the
Zumba® LLC organization would not allow Sun
City’s new group to be called Zumba® Club, and so
organizers decided to name the new exercise group
the Zoom Zoom Club.
There are five different classes offered, and if
you join now the fees will cover the rest of this
calendar year.
w Zumba® – Tues. & Thurs., 9:05 a.m., $58.41
w Zumba® Gold – Tues. & Thurs., 11:05 a.m., $58.41
w Aqua® Zumba – Weds. & Fri., 11 a.m., $58.41
w Zumba® Toning – Saturday, 11:05 a.m., $28.7
w Zumba® Gold Chair – Saturday, noon, $28.71
The base price is 99 cents per class, payable for
six months from July 1 to December 31. Other payment
options are available. First two classes are
free. Club dues are $5 a year. Zumba® classes are
faster and more intense than Gold. All classes take
place at Sun Shadows. Call Ruth, 546-5465, or
Teresa, 838-5301 before attending.
