Pickenhams’ WI Carolyn Vincent welcomed members and guests with an amusing poem, These included our speaker Mr Robert Ferguson and Terry Bowman our representative for the National AGM who had come to collect our resolution votes . Robert told us about his charity work with The Safari Trust who lobby against poachers in Africa. The animals numbers are now increasing due to their work with Trackers, Dogs and local schemes to help the community. A very enlightening talk with slides. Business: 1. Marina Shapton one of our members completed the London Marathon in six and a quarter hours. Well done Marina. 2. The Great Get Together in Memory of Jo Cox on the weekend of 17/ 18th June. Refreshments and Music is planned for one of these days in the Church Spinney. 3.Sylvia Sexton won the competition of a Victoria Sponge with Carolyn coming a close second. Next meeting: 13th June 2pm in church. Speaker: Genista Davidson “History of Art Deco”. Competition: An Art Deco piece of china (1911 - 1946). New Members: Come and give us a go. Ring Melanie Cousins 01760 440456. Swaffham Arts They normally give their concerts in Kings Lynn, so we were delighted when Norfolk Symphony Orchestra agreed to come to Swaffham and give a concert in the church. As a break from tradition, to mark the occasion, we tried out a poster which was very different from our usual style. The event at the end of April exceeded all expectations: the music was beautifully atmospheric; the introductions by the conductor, Philip Hesketh, enhanced the enjoyment, and the notes in the programme were a really good read; the beauty of the church and its acoustics added to the experience; and the appreciative applause of the audience concluded a wonderful evening. We are now in the process of planning events for next year. Thank you to all who support Swaffham Arts, especially those who help us to “get the show on the road”! We look forward to a new season starting in September. Everyone is welcome! Have a lovely summer! 17 Sporle WI An array of beautiful hats greeted our speaker, who was herself dressed to impress. Her topic, The Art Deco Era, was the ideal subject for our spring meeting and the speaker loved with a passion her subject. She lives and breaths the art deco ethos and her enthusiasm came across, we all felt we would like to have been around then. A very enjoyable “lesson” . After tea and cake a chance to purchase from the sales table which was enhanced with items, from the needlework ladies amongst us. A mini outing for a cream tea was decided upon and the summer outing destination decided, subject to costs etc. Then to close a poem – and the suggestion that members might like to read a poem of their choice. Our June meeting is an outing to The Urban Jungle – we will meet in the Sporle Community car park at l.30pm and sort out the cars available for “car share” This outing is a guided tour with tea and cake at a cost of £5.00 Sporle WI every 3rd Tuesday of the month – All ladies welcome. Beachamwell & District WI We held our May meeting at Barton Bendish due to our hall being used for voting. Maggie (President) welcomed us all especially Judith our new Member. Unfortunately our Speaker had to cancel at the very last minute due to ill health, but Leah entertained us brilliantly with a talk on one of her hobbies Creative Writing and Prose, we all thoroughly enjoyed it and thank you Leah for stepping in at the very last minute. We had already discussed the Resolutions for this year back in January, but we now had to vote formally on the chosen ones which are “Alleviating Loneliness” and “Plastic Soup, keep microplastic fibres out of our oceans”. Our Regional Delegate Terry Bowman was at the meeting to take note of our decision. The June meeting will be our Birthday Supper to be held at Bedingfield Arms, we made our choices from the delicious menu provided. We always welcome new members. Call Maggie on 01366327023.
