ASSIGNMENT # 3 So

ASSIGNMENT # 3 So We’ll Go No More A-Roving (1817) By George Gordon Byron, 6 th Baron Byron (Lord Byron) (England) So, we’ll go no more a-roving 7 So late into the night, Though the heart be still as loving, And the moon be still as bright. For the sword outwears its sheath 8 , And the soul wears out the breast, And the heart must pause to breathe, And Love itself have rest. Though the night was made for loving, And the day returns too soon, Yet we’ll go no more a-roving By the light of the moon. metaphor: a forced comparison between two unlike concepts (without using “like” or “as”). Example: “The detective listened to her story with a wooden face.” personification: an assignment of human characteristics to non-human objects or ideas. Example: “The stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky.” synecdoche: when the parts of something is used to signify the whole (or the reverse). Example: “All hands on deck;” “The pot is boiling;” “Houston played New York in the 1994 NBA finals.” DIRECTIONS: Choose ONE of the following to answer. Lord Byron 1788-1824 1. On the one hand, the poem literally describes someone who says he (and someone else) will no longer wander (to rove) at night. However, it seems that “roving” is being used as either metaphor (a comparison to some other activity) or synecdoche (where the one activity stands for a group of related activities). Choose one of these two possibilities and describe to what Lord Byron is referring. Use evidence from the text (quotation) when writing your paragraph. 2. In the second stanza, the speaker uses the image of sword and sheath as a metaphor for something. To what is Lord Byron comparing the sheathing of a sword, and how does this 7 to travel constantly without a fixed destination; to wander 8 a cover for the blade of a knife or sword; scabbard 10

develop ideas in the poem? Use evidence from the text (quotation) when writing your paragraph. 3. In the second stanza, the speaker uses the synecdoches of soul and heart to represent a person or a person’s activities that are associated with the soul and heart. To what concept or concepts is Lord Byron referring when he writes of the soul and heart in this way? Use evidence from the text (quotation) when writing your paragraph. 4. In the last line of the second stanza, the speaker personifies Love, treating it as if it had human characteristics. Why does Lord Byron write of Love this way, and how does it develop ideas in the poem? Use evidence from the text (quotation) when writing your paragraph. 5. While it is certainly possible to think of the night and day described in the poem as part of the literal plot (describing what is happening in the text), they could also be metaphorical ideas as well. Assuming that they are intended to be a comparison to other ideas (ideas that share some of the characteristics of day and night), to what is Lord Byron referring and how does it develop ideas in the poem? Use evidence from the text (quotation) when writing your paragraph. 11
