Fosamax (Alendronate) a-LEN-dro-nate Classification: Bisphosphonate IFU: Osteoporosis Action: Suppresses osteoclast activity on newly formed resorption surfaces, which reduces bone turnover. Bone formation exceeds resorption at remodeling sites, leading to progressive gains in bone mass. Dosage: 5 mg, 10 mg, 40 mg Route: P.O. Adverse Reaction: headache, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, musculoskeletal pain Interactions: NSAIDS: Increased risk of upper GI adverse reactions with drug doses about 10 mg/day. Page 76

Alendronate shows preferential localization to the sites of bone resorption, specifically under osteoclast. Dosage: 70 mg Route: P.O. Adverse Reaction: chest pain, discomfort, burning, difficulty with swallowing, heartburn, muscle or bone pain Interactions: Doxercalciferol: Blood calcium and phosphorus levels must be closely monitored during therapy with cholecalciferol and doxercalciferol, especially early in treatment during dosage adjustments Page 77
