Glucophage (Metformin) met-FOR-min Classification: Biguanide IFU: Type 2 diabetes mellitus Action: Decreases hepatic glucose production and intestinal absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity (increases peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Dosage: 500 mg, 850 mg Route: P.O. Adverse Reaction: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, flatulence, lactic acidosis Interactions: Cationic drugs: Have potential to compete for common renal tubular transport systems, which may increase metformin plasma levels. Glucotrol (Glipizide) GLIP-i-zide Classification: Sulfonylurea IFU: Type 2 diabetes mellitus Action: Unknown. A sulfonylurea that probably stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells and reduces glucose output by the liver. An extrapancreatic effect increases peripheral sensitivity to insulin. Dosage: 5 mg, 10 mg Route: P.O. Adverse Reaction: dizziness, headache, nausea, thrombocytopenia, hypoglycemia Interactions: Beta blockers: Prolonged hypoglycemic effect and masked symptoms of hypoglycemia. Use together cautiously.
