LIGHTING UP THE SKY: Komani photographer Phillip Prinsloo took this amazing photo of lightning over the town
Plans for Komani
Service delivery needed to resuscitate factories, attract investors
ZOLILE MENZELWA
W
HILE government could not
succeed in its efforts to revive
and improve Queendustria
without a sustainable electricity
supply, it was looking at ways to improve
infrastructure in industrial parks to ensure
potential investors had facilities to conduct
business.
Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle,
speaking on the sidelines of the Black
Management Forum’s executive debate on
unintended consequences of the Preferential
Procurement Policy Framework Act at the
Queens Casino and Hotel on Tuesday, said while
the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM)
was facing electricity outage challenges, it was
important for the local authority to keep
communication lines open with the community.
“Communication is very important because
when people do not know what is happening
they can easily be infuriated. It is easy for
misperceptions to spread.
“We commissioned an investigation into the
electrical challenges facing the area, particularly
Komani, and we are looking at giving support to
the municipality,” he said.
He said cooperative governance and
traditional affairs MEC Fikile Xasa had visited
Komani on the same day to look into support.
Xasa’s office had sent an invitation to The Rep
to have an interview with Xasa after his meeting
with the EMLM troika and mayoral committee,
but the interview could not take place.
“MEC Xasa will look into the strides taken thus
far. We are looking at strengthening the ability to
deliver within the municipality. We must also
ensure capacity to handle the finances of the
municipality and to spend them where they are
supposed to be spent,” Masualle said.
He said government would look at factories in
Queendustria which were currently standing
Of ficers
help to
a p p re h e n d
suspect
LAST Monday afternoon, officers in Lady
Frere responded to a panic at a store, where
they apprehended a suspect who had
allegedly stolen goods there the previous
day and was recognised by the owner. He
was handed over to the police, operations
manager Willie Reynecke told The Rep.
That night the company had to deploy two
additional response vehicles in Ezibeleni to
render assistance and support to foreigners
with businesses who were targeted during
the unrest about service delivery.
Six businesses were cleaned out and the
owners had to be transported to the police
station and assisted to remove personal
belongings from the stores.
Late on Friday night, response officers
were summoned by the guard of premises in
Cathcart Road where a pedestrian had been
run over by a vehicle. The driver ran to the
guard for help because he was afraid of
being attacked by friends of the injured
person. An ambulance and the police were
called and the response officers remained on
the scene until the police arrived.
During the afternoon, response officers in
Lady Frere attended to a panic at a shop
where they apprehended a suspect who had
robbed the owner of a large amount of cash.
The money was recovered and returned
and the suspect handed over to the police. –
Wo m a n ’s body found in street
Mlungisi family seeks answers after senseless killing
BHONGO JACOB
THE FAMILY of a Mlungisi woman who died
on Saturday evening is seeking answers
following the gruesome discovery of her
body on the corner of Qali Street.
Family spokeswoman Thozama Booi said the
body of her aunt, Buyiswa Rolomani, 55, was
found lying in the street with multiple wounds.
“It was such a terrible scene. Her face looked
as if she had been bitten.”
Booi said the incident happened at around
9pm.
“She came back from a funeral late on
Saturday and had a chat with her brother. She
asked for money that had been left by her
employer and her brother gave her the R200.
She took her bag and said she was going to her
boyfriend in Unifound.”
The family were later called by community
members to identify the body.
“She went to the spaza shop to get change
and some people told us there were young men
outside the shop who walked behind her.”
The family thinks she may have been
attacked shortly afterwards.
Rolomani was still alive when the family
arrived on the scene.
“We asked her if she had been bitten by dogs
and she shook her head. We asked her if it was
people who had done that to her and she
nodded. She was taken to Frontier Hospital and
the police told us the following morning that
she had died in the ambulance.’’
Her twin sister Nombuyiseko Rolomani said
she was shocked. “My sister
was a domestic worker who
worked hard. She took piece
jobs around the community
and everyone loved her. She
always took me to the clinic.’’
She said they were now
living in fear. “We are scared to
walk around here when it
starts to get dark. The police used to frequently
do patrols in the townships, but that has
stopped. We also had a neighbourhood watch
that just ended. Those things must come back.”
Some people told us
there were young men
outside the shop who
walked behind her
Son Ndimphiwe Rolomani
said his mother’s death would
leave a void.
“My mother wanted to see
us progress in life. She did not
even want our money.
Everyone will die, but no one
deserves to die the way she
did.”
Buyiswa will be buried on Saturday next
week. She leaves three children.
Police spokeswoman captain Namhla
Mdleleni said a case was under investigation.
far the local authority
had gone with the
amalgamation of
former Lukhanji,
Inkwanca and
Ts o l wa n a .
“The MEC also
pledged his support
and that his
department was
available where we
need help. We raised
the challenge of
electricity provision
and under-collection of
debt which are
negatively impacting
on service delivery.
“We pay more for
electricity to Eskom
than we collect and
that has a negative
effect on our budget
projections.”
She said the
municipality had to
encourage people to
pay, while at the same
time, it had to improve
service delivery.
She said another
matter with a torpedo
effect on service
delivery was that while
the municipalities,
which had different
liabilities, had merged,
the equitable share
funding had decreased.

Hospital’s R22.6m revamp
SIVENATHI GOSA
WORK on the Life Queenstown Private
Hospital’s latest offering – a
state-of-the-art paediatric unit valued at
R22.6-million – is well under way.
The facility is a 79-bed private hospital
which currently comprises a 24-hour
accident and emergency unit, an
intensive care unit, operating theatre,
maternity and paediatric unit and medical
and surgical wards.
Life Healthcare Group regional manager
Bruce Janssens said patients could look
forward to a more comprehensive
healthcare offering with the introduction
of the new 20-bed paediatric unit.
“The new unit is due for completion at
the end of September. In addition, the
expansion of the ICU from the current six
to 10 beds is also under way, and is
expected to be completed at the end of
A u g u st .
“This R8-million investment seeks to
meet the demand for ICU beds in the
communit y.”
The hospital recently completed a bulk
infrastructure upgrade at a cost of
R6.2-million, which includes an increase
in the hot water storage capacity with the
installation of three heat pumps which
will save on electricity costs.
“In addition, the cold water storage
capacity has been increased; a bulk
oxygen tank installed and additional
back-up generator capacity introduced.
“We also plan to spend approximately
R25-million during the next financial year
on the expansion of our theatre complex.”
Janssens said the planned investments
were in line with the Chris Hani District
Municipalit y’s vision to position Komani
as the business hub of the district.
The expansions have enabled the
hospital to recruit a specialised
anaesthetist, a general surgeon, a
physician and an orthopaedic surgeon.
“These new specialists are in
addition to our resident permanent
gynaecologist and ophthalmologist, which
means that our patients do not have to
travel outside of Komani for most medical
ser vices.”
Singing security guard going places
STUTTERHEIM – Masibulel
Kula, 32, a security guard
from a rural district, recently
soared to a higher note as he
embarked on a life-changing
journey. With the help of some
locals, Kula, as he is fondly
known, has at last been able
to pursue his dreams and it is
anticipated that, for this
gentleman, the road holds
many future triumphs.
From the humble
background of Mlungisi, Kula
started singing in the choir at
Sinethemba Junior Secondary
School. He discovered his
passion for opera singing in
high school when he attended
Jongile Nompondo High.
After matriculating in 2010,
Kula joined the Stutt Harmonic
Voices but gave up after
becoming disillusioned with
the lack of progress. Now a
husband and father of two,
Kula is able to reach for his
dream, enhanced by the
support of the community and
the backing of mentor Jane
Thompson.
Kula’s story is not only
awe-inspiring but tugs at the
heart strings. It started in the
lounge at Amatola Haven,
where Jane entertained senior
citizens on the piano three
nights a week.
One night Jane was
approached by a nameless
security guard who said he
had heard her play from the
security guard house and was
impressed with her music. Out
of the blue, Kula asked, “Can I
sing with you?”
Jane was astounded but got
permission for Kula to
accompany her while she
played. To say that the
residents were impressed
would be an understatement.
The magic that came out of
his mouth was breathtaking.
The numbers grew and so
did Kula. He and Jane started
practising three times a week
and they have become a
dynamic duo.
However, Jane wasn’t going
to stop there. She knew this
gifted singer should be
exposed and set about
introducing him to the world.
She approached Danny
Schultz, a young
“t e c h n o - s av v y ” teacher and
between them they decided
that Kula needed to get to
Durban for SA’s Got Talent.
This endeavour seemed
impossible and time was
running out. With no money
and limited resources Jane
approached Di Blom from
Property Profile and she
offered to pay for his
transport. Relying on
donations and a secondhand
cell phone, Kula, grinning from
ear to ear, got on the bus and
for the first time in his life, left
the Border area. Having slept
in the queue, Kula phoned to
proudly announce that they
had loved him and had
requested a TV interview.
At the end of this month,
Kula will know whether he has
made round two, and if
Durban was an eye-opener,
imagine the brighter lights of
Johannesburg!
Kula “the singing security
guard”, as he is fondly known,
is part of a vibrant community.
He has the whole town,
especially Amatola Haven,
backing him and we wish him
all the best in this exciting
venture.
LAST weekend the Stutterheim
Closed golf championships
were played. The champion
with the best gross over 36
holes, was Kyle Blom on 154.
He also won the A division
best nett on 144. The
runner-up for best gross was
Ryan Daniel on 159. He was
not an A or B division golfer,
but played in the C division
where he won the Saturday
Stableford with 45 points, the
Sunday bonus bogey with +10
and the 36 hole best nett with
a phenomenal 125. Runner-up
on Saturday was Dave
Waterman on 37 points and
the runner-up on Sunday was
Sean Richter on +6. Richter
came second in the C division
over 36 holes with 144 nett,
followed by Ryan Pickering on
148. The B division nett winner
was Kidwell Melane on 141,
followed by Andries Greeff on
142 and Craig Rance on 143.
The A division runner-up was
Derek Jones on 145 followed
by Kyle Flanegan on 149.The
winning “horse” in the
sweepstakes was Ryan Daniel
who was bought by Kyle Blom.
The second “horse” wa s
Kidwell Melane, bought by
Square Deal Engineering. The
selling sweep raised R25000
for the club.
The ladies’ hockey team
ended their losing streak by
beating Buffs on Sunday. The
girls won by 1-0 at home and
the goal was scored by
Danielle Verster.
On Saturday 46 people ran,
jogged and walked parkrun
event# 134, of whom three
were first timers and four
recorded new personal bests.
Representatives of five clubs
took part.
The newly formed
Stutterheim Athletics Club will
hold a 5km fun run tomorrow,
starting and finishing at the
Station Field. Walkers and
juniors start at noon and
runners at 12.15. Entry R40 for
adults and children older than
13 and R20 for juniors. There
will be medals for all finishers,
as well as a jumping castle.
ST E R KST R O O M – A delicious
breakfast was served by the
MOTHS last Sunday to visiting
bikers. A large gathering of road
bikers from Komani and East
London used the opportunity for a
breakfast run to Sterkstroom.
The weather was rather icy, so
several opted to arrive in their
vintage cars. The MOTHS’
Dissatisfaction over borehole
boils over at Ilinge school
BHONGO JACOB
A BOREHOLE sunk at
Masithembe School in Ilinge
has caused divisions
between former school
governing body chairman
Xolile Mali and the school.
The cost of sinking the
borehole was made possible
via a donation by the
German Development
Services (DED).
The Rep reported (Ilinge
borehole gives new hope,
January 11 2011) that the
organisation had allocated
R58 000 for the borehole in
order to provide the school’s
garden and building with an
independent and sustainable
source of water. A piping
system was installed to
direct water to the kitchens
and toilets and to irrigate the
gardens.
The borehole has not been
working for a few years and
Mali has accused principal
Thembeka Goxa of
negligence.
“That borehole is no
longer working, there is no
garden while this was all
done with the aim of
supporting the school’s
nutrition programmes. The
school destroyed it because
of how they operated it, even
after they were shown how
to operate it.”
He said the situation had
affected sanitation at the
school.
“The school toilets are not
working, the children use a
pit toilet system because
there is no water and that is
dangerous.”
The community wanted
the borehole to be fixed.
“I am one of the people
who implemented the
programme. It is simple –
the school has a budget,
they should fix it.”
Ndamane refuted claims
made by Mali.
“We also want the
borehole to work, but it gave
us problems immediately.”
She said they got Mali to
fix the borehole in 2011.
“We gave him R300 to fix
the problem because he was
heading the team and he
brought people from the
township to fix the borehole.
In the end, they did not fix it
and we never received any
repor t.”
She said the process of
securing a service provider
to fix the borehole was under
w ay.
“We realised it is better to
get skilled and professional
people to fix this problem.
We have to prioritise, we are
looking at the quotations
from the service providers.”
She said the man who was
employed to look after the
school’s garden resigned
this year and the four pit
toilets were established to
assist with the school’s
sanitation challenges.

THE REPRESENTATIVE 26 May 2017
EDITORIAL
OPINION
We must
speak out
THE Rep this week features the
story of journalist Siyathemba
Ben, a former intern at the
paper, who has spoken out
bravely about the horror of her
rape a few years ago (page 11).
At the same time, this
weekend will be a time of
mourning for a Komani family
whose three-year-old
granddaughter, Jade Veldman,
will be laid to rest in East
London. The little girl was
brutally murdered last weekend.
Another local family will also
be trying to pick up the pieces
of their lives after the death of
their sister, Buyiswa Rolomani,
who was found with severe
injuries in Mlungisi over the
weekend. She later died in the
ambulance on the way to
hospital.
These three stories are
written at a time when violence
against women and children in
South Africa is raising
increasing concern.
Statistics SA indicated in a
report earlier this month that
one in five South African
women older than 18 has
experienced physical violence,
with poverty often a defining
fa c t o r.
A summit in Cape Town,
hosted by the Mandela Initiative
earlier this week, was told that
children under five were most
likely to be abused and killed at
home while one in three
children are victims of sexual
violence and physical abuse
before they are 18.
In 2013/2014‚ 29% of sexual
offences reported to the police
involved children at an average
of 51 cases a day, while a child
is raped and murdered every
three days.
These statistics should stun
us, but then, statistics are often
easy to gloss over and to
ignore. What is more difficult to
forget is Jade Veldman’s little
face. It’s the faces of Buyiswa
Rolomani’s devastated family.
What is also more difficult to
ignore is the proud young figure
of Siyathemba Ben who is
refusing to be a victim despite
her rape – and therein lies our
i n s p i r at i o n .
If anything, these three
females – one still a toddler,
one a young woman and one in
her fifties – should inspire us to
stand up against abuse and
violence in its various forms
against both women and
children. It takes bravery. It
takes courage to stand up for
someone else, to speak out and
not to ignore the abuse which
you know might be happening
next door. It means being vocal
and refusing to let those who
do wrong get away with it. It’s a
sad indictment of us all if we
turn and face the other way.
The emperor
has no clothes
NOW the Lord said to Samuel, “How
long will you mourn for Saul, seeing
I have rejected him from reigning
over Israel? Fill your horn with oil,
and go; I am sending you to Jesse
the Bethlehemite. For I have
provided Myself a king among his
sons.” – 1 Samuel 16:1.
When I posted this quote on my
Facebook page this week, a lot of
people were confused as to my
intention. Many
thought I had
gone bonkers
quoting the
Scriptures when
they knew my
views on religion
and other matters related to it. What
they failed to recognise, except one
priest who calls himself my friend, is
that this extract has a deeper
meaning and is even more relevant
to our situation today. The events
over the past few years have shown
that things are not going as well as
they should in the corridors of
power. Time and time again we have
seen scandal after scandal, with no
end in sight.
The State of Capture report by the
public protector laid bare many of
the things we have been hearing
and reading about in the media. As
if that was not enough, along came
the Brian Molefe fiasco at Eskom
that just boggles the mind.
You begin to ask yourself whether
these people do not recognise that
these shenanigans are dragging
their organisation, the ANC, deeper
and deeper into the mire? Do they
even care? Or should we, as the
general public, be concerned with
the spectacular own goals
committed by the governing party?
Should we, like the instruction given
to Samuel, stop mourning for the
steady decline of their electoral
support and start to look for new
rulers to anoint, to take the country
forward? Is the country ready to
anoint a new ruler?
Come 2019 will
South Africa like
they have already
been in the
Western Cape, Nelson Mandela Bay,
Tshwane and Johannesburg? Can it
save itself from self-destruction?
Centuries ago, a Danish author,
Hans Christian Anderson, wrote a
story of an emperor who pranced
around naked. The people did not
have the nerve to tell him so, hence
the famous quote, “The emperor has
no clothes”.
The ANC NEC will meet this
weekend and surely the issue of the
man at the top is bound to come up.
Will anyone have the nerve to tell
the emperor that he has no clothes?
Somehow, I doubt it. They will go
on and weep for what was, instead
of accepting what everyone else is
seeing. Come Monday a convoluted
statement decrying – eloquently –
what is wrong, will be read by
Gwede Mantashe once again and
will offer no concrete solutions. Will
I be proven wrong? We shall see.
Question: What is your
typical day at the office
Answer: Usually it starts off
with making sure we are all
here; colleagues hammering
my door down to see if we’ve
received payments yet. Then
it’s paperwork and someone
popping into my office to
make me laugh. Play a game
here and there, and then it’s
bookkeeping as usual.
Q: What motivates you to
wake up in the morning and
A: Except for my kids
making it impossible to sleep
in, my colleagues. There is
nothing more motivating than
coming to work every day
hearing the happy greetings
and laughs down the
corridors. Sometimes we even
have the odd person singing
or dancing before we get the
day started.
Q: What type of
challenges do you face on a
daily basis at work?
A: Time. Some days I really
need the day to be longer to
get to everything.
Q: What was your most
Q: If you could play a song
what song would you play to
A: Kaalvoet Sokkie by Kurt
you want to grab the closest
Q: What item can you not
A: My lipstick and my shake.
Learn at every opportunity you
Q: What best defines a
A: A leader looks at all
groups of people and
understands each one’s story,
therefore making better
decisions than just putting
everyone in one group.
Q: What do you like most
about Komani?
A: The sense of community.
Coming from East London, I
never thought I would fit in,
but these last couple of
months I have felt more at
home than ever before.
Q: Do you think we are
living in the best or worst
living in the best time. We
have learnt so much from the
something...do something, let
Mayors have a tendency to ignore
the grievances of the community. The
NOT GOOD: Residents of Popcorn Valley in Komani are making an urgent appeal to the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality to
fix the pothole-riddled streets of the area
Picture: SUPPLIED
Re s i d e n t s ’ mood is boiling over
CONCERNED resident of
Komani writes: The anger and
frustration that all Komani
residents are experiencing as
a result of the ineptitude and
lack of planning on the part of
the Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipality (EMLM) and
especially the former Lukhanji
Municipality over many years
is clearly now boiling over
(The Rep, May 19 “Fire in the
streets “).
EMLM has, through
executive mayor Lindiwe
Gunuza Nkwentsha, said that
the electrical problem is being
attended to and it seems that
the process is well under way
to repair substations and
cables. The question arises:
What are the short, medium
and long-term plans to ensure
that the fiasco is not repeated
and Komani residents are
treated with the respect they
deserve when it comes to
ser vices?
The legacy of broken
installations, unrepaired and
unreplaced street lights and
crumbling roads will take
more than the statement, “We
will fix it“ by the mayor.
One can not look past the
fact that there is very little
expertise in ELM to address
the huge problems we are
facing as a result of past
neglect. The prevailing attitude
has always been one of
allowing things to get
completely out of hand before
acting. It would seem that the
initiative that brought the town
crisis committee into being
would be the logical way
forward to ensure that there is
a sharing of ideas and sound
planning becomes the norm
and crisis management
becomes something of the
past. EMLM must be prepared
to listen to those who have
insight into matters that affect
the future of our town and
then move forward together.
To those who claim to serve
the interests of the people by
burning and looting, I suggest
you rather become part of the
solution by joining the crisis
committee instead of being
part of the problem.
No revival
SMMEs
ZWELIBANGILE Modi of
Ezibeleni writes: The attempts
by the Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM) to revive
the township economies as
reported in the Rep (“To w n s h i p s
to get attention,” May 19) seems
like just a public relations
exercise.
The mere fact that such an
important meeting pertaining to
such a critical topic is being held
far away from the townships is a
clear indication that it is just an
academic exercise.
There is one thing that CHDM
and any other government
department should know – there
is nothing taking place about the
cooperatives and SMMEs in the
townships without our direct
involvement.
The government or the
parastatal officials are not
business people and their
knowledge of business is purely
academic. That is why our
townships’ business space is
wholly occupied by foreign
n at i o n a l s .
For as long as our input as
small and micro enterprises is
not taken care of, there is no
hope that the economies of the
townships and villages will be
revived.
the Queens Casino and
He made reference to
his playing days in the
’90s and amused the
crowd with stories
about how he once
shared a toothbrush
with former teammate
Fanie de Villiers during
their tour to Sri Lanka
in 1993.
“Everyone likes to
hear stories of what
happened in the change
there was no Facebook
and that was good.”
He started playing for
the Springboks when he
was 32.
“I worked for a long
game and at 32, you
really do not have much
Symcox called on
“I know the business
spring will come when
things grow again.
“I see it wherever I
go. It’s hard to stay
positive and believe you
can do it and
ANCYL
names its
BHONGO JACOB
THE ANC Youth League in Enoch Mgijima
sub-region wants Makhaya Nonyongo to
become the provincial secretary of the
Eastern Cape ANCYL.
Noyongo is the former Chris Hani
ANCYL regional deputy chairman and is
currently the provincial task team
organiser. He also serves as the ANC
branch secretary of ward 19, Solomon
Mahlangu branch in Enoch Mgijima
sub-region.
ANCYL convener of the sub-region
Zithulele Sigonyela said lobbying for
Nonyongo to claim the provincial
secretary position had begun in
anticipation of the Eastern Cape ANCYL
congress in July.
Most of the local branches have held
their annual general meetings.
“The Enoch Mgijima sub-region has 34
branches plus five special branches
which equals 78 delegates going to the
provincial conference,” Sigonyela
explained.
The regional youth league also called
for the general secretary of Sasco
Thembani Makata and the deputy
secretary of the youth league Dalithemba
Sihlali to form part of the new leadership.
“The sub-region is certain that our
regional congress, which is expected to
be convened no later than mid-June, will
support our view.”
Mandlendoda believes.
“This is how Dicla began – a big dream with
small beginnings, step by step developing into
something that will make a difference for many
and create abundance beyond our lifespan.”
Dicla is a black-owned company with a BEE
status level 2. The company was launched in
the Eastern Cape in 2013, as an expansion of
the Dicla empire. Mandlendoda now has 100%
ownership of the Eastern Cape Dicla, with
abundant success over the years.
The company boasts a recent extension in
Mandla Brands. The brand has acquired
importing and exporting rights recently and has
since introduced the first-grade Mandla Rice to
the market.
“The rice is imported from Thailand and
packed in Nelson Mandela Bay. The shortage of
water in this country is the reason we have an
imported product; the vision is to grow the rice
here on home soil, as beans are currently
grown in Centane,” said Mandlendoda.
“Mandla Brands is determined to bring good
quality products to people at affordable prices.
We are going to grow the brand and sell other
products, but for now we are focusing on
grains.”
Mandlendoda said supermarkets had already
shown interest in selling the rice, but the main
goal was for consumers to visit the Dicla
headquarters to gain access to the products.
“We are helping emerging communities and
previously disadvantaged groups with a love
for farming to get started and to make a
contribution to establishing food security in
South Africa.”
Journalist speaks
out on rape ordeal
THE REPRESENTATIVE 26 May 2017 Tel: (045) 839-4040 Emergency: (A/H) 083-272-0955 ° Editorial: sonjar@timesmedia.co.za - advertising: charodinev@timesmedia.co.za 11
HAVING to explain one’s feelings after a rape to
someone who has not been through the same
experience is difficult.
So says Siyathemba “S i ya ” Ben, who previously
worked as an intern at The Rep, following her rape
in June 2013 while she was walking home from
work in Johannesburg.
Ben, who spoke to The Rep senior reporter Zolile
Menzelwa this week, said she has been unable to
forget the day she was raped.
She remembers the moment she was attacked
with horror.
“Things suddenly did not make any sense to me.
I felt as if I was dreaming and I can remember
thinking – my life can not end like this. I have got
so much to do and so many dreams to achieve.”
She said during the rape she was scared and
helpless.
“I prayed while it was happening and that kept
me calm. I had to be smart about it and make sure
that I “c o o p e r at e d ” with the rapist. I guess that’s
what kept me alive,” Ben said.
Ben said she was in shock afterwards and just
wanted to die.
“I kept hoping that it was all just a bad dream
and that I would eventually wake up from it,” she
said.
Ben said she had never felt hatred for men
despite her experience.
“I will say this: I am scared of men and never
really feel safe in the presence of any man. It’s as
if you have to constantly look over your shoulder.”
She said she had always wanted to come
forward with her story but had to wait until she
was sure. “Last Thursday, after having a chat with
a friend about starting a personal YouTube
channel, I realised that I was ready to share my
story. I spoke to my family and friends about it and
they were supportive of the idea.”
It took a lot of courage to speak about the rape,
especially on such a public platform.
“I believe that you can never really know how
prepared you are for something until you find
yourself in that situation. Courage and strength
came from God.“
She said she was able to rely on family and
friends for support but they did not really
understand what she was going through.
“They could not relate to my feelings and
emotions. One day you’re happy, the next day you
are sad. I feel it’s better to deal with something
like this with someone who has also been through
it, who understands where you’re coming from and
will not judge you, no matter how you’re feeling.
“A lot of women have been raped and have no
one to talk to about their experience. They are
REACHING OUT: A former intern at The Rep,
Siyathemba Ben, has spoken out about her rape
ordeal in a video posted on YouTube
scared of being shamed and judged. I want to be
that person with whom they can openly share their
feelings and emotions.”
It was important for rape victims and survivors
to know they were not alone and so the young
journalist is currently in the process of launching a
non-governmental organisation, Project Hope.
“Healing is a process. I can not say I am fully
healed and I don’t think you can fully heal. I still
have emotionally challenging days. I was
diagnosed with depression but the pain has
become better to deal with over the years.”
She discovered that talking about what had
happened to her, having support from family and
friends, prayer and keeping journals of her feelings
helped.
“I cannot say what any woman should do in that
situation. What worked for me was keeping calm
and negotiating for my life. I stopped fighting after
realising that my life was under threat.”
a student is that you
need to understand
what career or even
industry you are
interested in.
Look at things like
what you enjoy, what
you’re good at – or even
examine what careers
and skills are in
demand, as
understanding these
aspects will make it
Research, advice important when deciding on a career
easier to enter the
workplace. Remember
you are working towards
finding a career, so your
chosen field of study
needs to be focused on
subjects you feel drawn
to and could see
yourself doing now and
into the future.
Another great starting
point is doing an online
career aptitude test or
visiting an MSC
Business College
campus, which offers
free career tests.
As a corporate it is
worth remembering that
a company’s strongest
asset is the one that
ironically won’t be found
on a balance sheet –
employees.
And while companies
spend large amounts
buying, servicing and
upgrading equipment,
machinery and
buildings, employee
development can often
be neglected or put on
hold. This despite
employees being the
heartbeat of the
organisation, ultimately
responsible for the
success or failure of a
QUEEN’S COLLEGE
BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL
Striving For Excellence Through Education
company. As a business
leader it is imperative to
get to grips with what
areas in your
organisation need skills
development.
As a student, as well
as a corporate leader,
there are certain things
you need to consider
when selecting a
training provider:
ý Does the college
offer the career path
you are interested in?
ý Reputation. You
want peace of mind that
you are getting a good
education and have
chosen an established
name in education – so
look for a provider that
has been around for a
number of years and
has campuses across
the country.
ý Location. Is the
college on major
transport routes? You
want it make sure it is
easily accessible,
especially if you or staff
members in your
company are using
public transport.
ý Is the college
accredited and
registered with the
correct authoritative
body? You want a
qualification that is
recognised; otherwise
you’re wasting your
time and money.
ý The fee structure –
what do the fees
include and exclude?
Often you are given the
price of a course, but
still have to pay extra
for learning material,
textbooks etc. So make
sure you know what all
the costs involve – you
want the best value.
ýThe campus itself –
does the campus look
clean and safe? Does it
have good equipment
and technology?
Consider safety if
weekend classes or
evening classes are
applicable to you or
your organisation.
ýWhat are the staff
like? Remember these
are the people who will
play a major role in
student or staff
development, so you
want faculty staff that
are warm and friendly
and have your best
interests at heart.
provider point to
previous or current
Help for matrics in making choices
I
F YOU are a matriculant or a parent of one, you
must be feeling the heat right now. Besides having
to face exams, you’re also under pressure to
finalise your applications for further studies and
bursaries. You have tons of paperwork to deal with
and varying deadlines, as well as finals looming – it
is rather crazy out there, isn’t it? One way to turn
down the heat a notch or two is to consult a trained
career adviser, says Natalie Rabson of Boston City
Campus & Business College.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, Boston
offers computerised career assessment and
one-on-one career guidance by trained career
advisers at each of the college’s branches nationwide.
This is offered free of charge and with no obligation to
register. Rabson suggested pupils and their parents
make use of this service.
“The reality is that there are so many ways you can
study and get a good education that there is no need
to panic or make hasty decisions.”
Rabson believes it is worthwhile investigating all
study options. “That is why time spent with a career
adviser is probably the best thing you can do. It is
also valuable to chat to a recruitment agent, as they
are aware of what employers are looking for and what
their skills needs are, and the value of various
qualifications out in the corporate world”.
With the new regulations regarding the matric
certificate in place, you now have to
have bachelor’s exemption written
Time spent with a
career adviser is
probably the best
thing to do
on your certificate to be accepted to
study for a degree. Do not feel
despondent if you do not have
degree acceptance. There are
options that will give you entrance
to a degree, or alternative pathways
within the same industry you want
to work in. A trained career adviser
can give you a proper breakdown of alternative ways
of studying and training for the world of work.
ý Private colleges and universities – public
universities in South Africa do not have enough
places to accommodate all the school leavers who
want to study. Government announced last year that it
was going to build more universities, but it will take a
while before these are ready. Private colleges such as
Boston City Campus & Business College offer many
career options, including accredited degrees. Boston
offers a BCom management marketing and a BBA in
media operations, as well as a range of other learning
programmes. The college has 40 campuses spread
throughout the country and
registration for some of the courses
is open right through the year, there
is no closing date.
As a Unisa licensee, Boston offers
tuition support at selected campuses
for students who register for the
Unisa BCom; BCompt, LLB and BBA.
ýDistance learning and online
learning – there are many good,
accredited courses offered online or through distance
learning.
This includes degrees, certificates and diplomas.
Boston City Campus & Business College offers a
HIV/Aids Counselling and Management as well as
Sports Administration via distance learning.
ýSkills programmes – a skills programme is a
short course of study during which you complete one
or more modules or subjects. Some skills
programmes can be completed in as little as three
weeks, others are as long as 12 months. They can be
done part-time or full-time. You can build on existing
skills or gain new ones and grow to advanced levels
in things such as IT. Skills programmes are accredited
and recognised by the Setas (sector education and
training authorities). Boston offers skills programmes
such as assistant bookkeeper, bookkeeper, payroll,
cost and management accounting, income tax, and
business management.
ýProfessional institutes and associations such as
the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB), the
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants
(ACCA), the Computing Technology Association
(CompTIA), Prometric and Pastel make use of private
colleges such as Boston to run their courses. Boston
City Campus & Business College has repeatedly been
voted as the best computer training college by The
Star readers.
According to CompTIA Boston certifies the most
students on CompTIA in sub-Sahara Africa and they
have been rated third globally by CompTIA.
Mixed results for prime
real estate in Africa
AFRICA’S prime
real estate
markets have
recorded mixed
performances in the
last two years, as
the continent
readjusts to a
decline in global
commodity prices,
according to last
year’s Knight Frank
Africa report.
According to data
in the international
real estate
consultants’ repor t
released in Nairobi
on Wednesday, real
estate demand from
oil companies and
the associated
services sector has
fallen in all Africandriven
economies.
Fr a n c o p h o n e
countries are,
however, enjoying
increased tenant
demand from
growing middle
classes.
The Angolan
capital Luanda is
the worst hit, cities
such as Cape Town
are among the most
stable locations,
while Nairobi is
currently the most
sought-af ter
l o c at i o n .
The report paints
a positive outlook
for sub-Saharan
Africa’s real estate
m a r ke t s .
It indicates that a
growing volume of
capital is now
targeted at the
region’s property
s e c t o r.
revenue of R514-million.
Presenting the budget,
CHDM mayor Kholiswa
Vimbayo said the operating
revenue had increased by
R125.2-million from
R914-million during the
second adjustment budget to
R1.039-billion in the current
financial year.
She said the increase was
influenced by interest on
external investments at
R2-million, interest on
outstanding debtors at
R103-million and transfers of
recognised operational funds
of R2-million.
Increases in service
charges for water and
sanitation were at 6%.
The operating budget had
increased by R14.3-million
compared with the draft
budget tabled in March.
Vimbayo said the increase
was influenced by 2% of debt
impairment and depreciation
and asset impairment
increase of 3.5%.
Water bulk purchases
increased by 8%, contracted
services decreased by 48%
and other expenditures
decreased by 11.9%.
“Other expenditure
includes municipal
infrastructure grant (MIG),
equitable share funding, IDP
programmes and indigent
subsidy, telephone,
stationery and operating
conditional grants,” she said.
The extended public works
programmes budget
increased from R7.7-million
to R10-million.
“The 10% overall decrease
in the capital grant funding
was influenced by a 24% MIG
increase, regional bulk
infrastructure grant increase
of 1% and water services
infrastructure grant decrease
of 23% and cooperative
governance and traditional
affairs grant decrease of
54%. There was no provision
of infrastructure grant from
the department of human
settlements for the coming
financial year,” she said.
The capital expenditure
was made up of the
R514-million from conditional
grants and R97-million from
asset financing reserves.
Councillor Sizwe Tame said
it was worrying to see grants
for water and sanitation
decreasing while the tariffs
increased but council
speaker Mxolisi Koyo said
the district authority had no
control over grants as they
were from provincial and
national government. He said
the tariff increase was meant
to supplement the grants,
adding that council should
advise Vimbayo to lobby for
more funds.
Inxuba Yethemba executive
mayor Ray Shweni said there
was no way tariffs would not
increase. He said councils
should conduct public
awareness campaigns that
there might not be grants by
2030.
“We must appreciate the
little we have to keep our
heads above water. Those
who can afford to pay should
not register as indigents and
our credit policy must be
implemented,” Shweni said.
MESSY DILEMMA: A heap of KFC boxes lies in Schlebusch Street, Komani – a situation which has
raised the ire of a nearby supermarket
Litter causing friction
SIVENATHI GOSA
LITTERING in Schlebusch
Street in Komani is ruffling
fe at h e r s .
Speaking to The Rep this
week, Protea SPAR owner
John Atkins said the litter
mainly consisted of takeaway
boxes and paper bags
belonging to KFC which is
situated nearby.
Atkins said he had spoken to
the manager who claimed the
littering was the fault of street
children.
Atkins said street children
could, however, not access the
rubbish bins from the street.
“It is not the municipality’s
fault, because they do collect
the rubbish on the allocated
days, but KFC has this
tendency of dropping its
rubbish in front of our store in
the evenings.”
The litter could be seen from
the entrance to Protea SPAR
and from the shop’s parking
area.
“This is a health and safety
issue, and should not be
tolerated any further.”
Atkins said he had been
e-mailing the person in charge
of the KFC franchises, but had
not yet received a reply.
KFC manager Vivian Zondi
said children living on the
street were responsible for the
mess.
“We collect all the rubbish
and put it in the bin that is
locked inside the premises –
these street kids climb over
the wall and take out all the
rubbish to try and get food.”
“I even asked the landlord to
make the wall higher but that
does not help because they
manage to climb over.”
She said she did not know
what else to do to resolve the
s i t u at i o n .
Obituary: Golfer
Asanda Qoba
THE golfing fraternity of Komani
was plunged into mourning this
week following the death of
promising young golfer Asanda
Qoba.
Qoba was hit by a vehicle in
Cathcart Road on Saturday.
In an obituary penned by
friends, it was said that Qoba
was arguably one of the greatest
prospects in golf ever produced
in Komani “and certainly the best
black golfer of this modern era”.
Qoba’s interest in golf started
at an early age while watching
golfers play at “C a r n o i st i e ”,
which is the open field next to
Victoria Park. He learned from
golfers like Elijah Dayi and Rix
Quwe and was eventually
coached by Bandile Ndabambi.
He joined the Queenstown Golf
Club where he excelled and
showed great maturity.
He came from a “no handicap”
playing system to a controlled
handicap and was immediately
given a six handicap – an
indication of his potential and
immense talent.
Because of his competitive
nature and desire to compete
with the region’s top golfers, he
loved playing open
championships in and around
Border and the country districts.
“Most people would see this
youngster from the dusty streets
of Mlungisi walking with his golf
bag to the course and he would
be on his way to compete out of
town,” one friend said.
His greatest achievement was
representing the Country
Districts in Upington in 2014 and
at the time of his death, he was
the first reserve of the 2017
ASANDA QOBA
team. He won various open
competitions and was renowned
for selling his prizes in exchange
for funds for the next tourney or
to pay his subs.
Due to a lack of resources,
funds and sponsors, Asanda’s
journey was not easy.
His perseverance in pursuit of
his goal is an inspiring story
which highlights the camaraderie
among fellow golfers.
He had to overcome many
challenges and adversity and
was forced by circumstances to
lead a child-headed household
after the passing of his mother.
He remained humble and did
not derail. He excelled through
discipline, hard work and used
his God-given talent to survive
and thrive.
Through his life, credit and
comfort must go to the nameless
people who, knowingly or
unknowingly, made it possible
for this golfing maestro to
flourish.
May his story inspire others to
overcome life’s challenges and to
live their dreams.
An annual golf day in honour
of him and in support of his
siblings and others like him, is
being planned. Gratitude to
Eyethu Funeral Services for
giving Asanda a fitting send-off.
Asanda’s friend and fellow
golfer Ralph Cullinan had this to
say: “It was with a sore heart
that I heard of my friend Asanda
Qoba’s passing. ‘Qobs’, as I
called him, was a special young
man. His constant smile and
willingness to assist me was
something I will never forget.
“In my time of need he helped
me to stay positive in the early
days when I was confined to a
w h e e l c h a i r.
“His encouragement on the
golf course was something I will
always cherish – when I battled
to play golf he would say, ‘My
man don't worry, we will fix it.
Come my man, don't give up’.
“Qobs, I celebrate your life,
your kindness, your help. Thank
you for being there for me.
“May you continue smashing
big drives in heaven and helping
all of us.”
THE REPRESENTATIVE 26 May 2017
Four from Samwu
are suspended
ZOLILE MENZELWA
THE South African Municipal
Wo r ke r s ’ Union (Samwu) has
suspended three shop stewards and
an ordinary member at the Chris
Hani District Municipality (CHDM) to
protect the union from being
vulnerable to a soon-to-be-launched
rival union.
Shop stewards Lindi Tyali, Ntombi
Ndulula, Nandi Kamile and member
Sipiwo Gcina were served with
suspension letters dated May 11,
signed by regional secretary
Mongameli Mancam.
The Rep has a copy of one of the
letters which states that they are
suspended from all union activities.
“This is a result of your failure to
carry your mandate and service
members of the union, bringing the
name of the union into disrepute and
distributing pamphlets for rival
unions and federation. Your
suspension will remain in force until
the process of disciplinary [hearings]
has been exhausted.”
The union that will contest Samwu
for membership is the Democratic
Municipal and Allied Workers’ Union
of SA. It is an affiliate of the SA
Federation of Trade unions led by
former Cosatu general secretary
Zwelinzima Vavi as the general
secretar y.
Mancam confirmed the
suspensions, saying the leadership
was trying to address the non-service
issue relating to members.
“We were getting complaints from
members that they were not being
serviced, especially from local
SUDOKU NUMBER 4
municipalities who came to CHDM
when water was taken over.
We have tried to talk to these
comrades but they did not attend
meetings.”
He claimed issues such as job
evaluation, salary adjustments and
placement of members had also
been neglected.
Mancam said the regional office
had written to the shop stewards
whom he accused of collaborating
with the employer instead.
“Others are working with rival
unions and should have been
dismissed summarily.”
Asked if all the constitutional
obligations had been followed before
the suspension, Mancam said
regional office bearers (ROBs) took
decisions between meetings.
“We were given a mandate by the
regional shop stewards council (RSC)
to look into this. We decided to
suspend them. We will report it to
the RSC and make recommendations
to the provincial leadership,” he said.
He believed there was a strong
case against the four and they could
be dismissed.
Ndulula confirmed her suspension
and said they were trying to deal
with the matter using internal
processes. She said union members
at CHDM were panicking, with some
joining other unions as no one was
addressing them. She said they were
not allowed to address members.
Gcina confirmed his suspension
but said he was no longer a shop
steward when suspended.
Tyali refused to comment and
Kamile said she was on leave.
Mlungisi woman.
Eslina Seti, 81, and her two
grandsons use a hole sunk
into cement without a proper
toilet structure.
She told The Rep that she
had also been living without
electricity for many years.
“The toilet is not right for
someone like me. This has
been my life for the past 30
years. We do not have
electricity. It was switched off
by the municipality because I
cannot afford to pay for it.
Both my children died, leaving
me to care for my
grandchildren.”
An emotional Seti said the
family used a flame stove, and
sometimes made a fire outside
to cook.
“There is no one to help us.
We use a paraffin lamp to
light the house. My older
grandson is in matric and is
struggling at school because
he has to study in the dark.”
DISGRACE: A Mlungisi family has to use this hole as a toilet
said the matter had been
reported to their councillor on
numerous occasions.
“I told the councillor about
the situation. He said he knew
about it but time has passed
and nothing has been done.”
He said he had also
approached other community
leaders who told him they
should rather approach
business people.
A meeting had also been
held with Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipality (EMLM) executive
mayor Lindiwe Gunuza
Nkwentsha in February.
Ward councillor Bulelani
Mgoqi said he was not aware
about the situation when The
“We saw her situation after
we were called by her
neighbour. We took the matter
to the councillor but did not
get any direction. The
councillor is serving for a
second term in this area and
the old woman has always
attended community
meetings, yet her life has not
changed.”
The event will be held at the
Mzi Skweyiya Hall on June 16
from 11am.
“We have to help her as she
has lost hope. What motivates
us is that her grandchildren
have not stopped going to
school.We would like to see
her getting electricity and a
proper toilet.”
He said they had also
approached local businesses
for assistance.
“We hope to achieve this
with the assistance of local
businesses in the township.
This is not the only woman in
this situation and we are
trying to help where we can.”
JOB WELL DONE: Mlungisi police officers and neighbourhood watch members at the South African Police Services (SAPS)
Service of Excellence Awards in Mzi Skweyiya hall in Mlungisi
Awards for crime fighters
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch
members and police officers
were honoured for the
difference they are making in
the fight against crime at the
South African Police Services
(SAPS) Service of Excellence
Awards in Mzi Skweyiya hall in
Mlungisi last Thursday.
New cluster commander
Major General Thembisile
Pathekile commended the
Mlungisi station commander
Colonel Gcinikhaya Taleni for
making the awards function
possible.
He said the awards were
intended to encourage police
officers who often worked
under enormous pressure.
“It is not often that
community members say
thank you for a job well done.
We wish we did get that kind
of feedback with people
reporting on police members
who have handled their cases
successfully to the station
commanders. This will
encourage other members
who are lagging behind, to lift
their standards when serving
the community.”
He said the awards to
neighbourhood watch
members were aimed not only
at thanking such participants,
but also encouraging others to
join in such initiatives.
“It is important for people to
note that neighbourhood
watches must fall under the
Community Policing Forum
(CPF) in their station areas.
They must follow the
constitution and the discipline
of the forum.”
Patekile said the SAPS did
not encourage neighbourhood
watch members seizing
weapons from suspects’
houses without a police escort
and that this would not be
allowed.
Enoch Mgijima m ay o r
Lindiwe Gunaza Nkwentsha
said, “We are here to praise
people for their good work.
When a person is shown
appreciation, they are able to
give their best.”
Nkwentsha said it was sad
that police often did not
receive the recognition they
deserved within their own
communities.
“The role played by the
neighbourhood watches also
demonstrates a good working
relationship with the police.”

Grand Sedona the ultimate family ride
THE Kia Grand Sedona ticks all the boxes
when it comes to comfort, ease and
reliability on the road.
Billed as a family vehicle, the
seven-seater MPV provides am u l t i m at e
sense of luxury with a spacious and
impeccable interior.
The boot area also provides ample
space for sports equipment, toys, luggage
and everything else, easing the demands
of a family road trip, writes Sonja Raasch.
The size of the vehicle should be no
deterrent to a nervous driver, which a test
drive to East London and Grahamstown
proved conclusively over the weekend.
The vehicle handled beautifully around
the bendy roads and passes to the
destinations and the stability on the road
was never in doubt.
The powerful engine ensured that
passing vehicles was made easy, as was
negotiating the curves and sometimes
challenging road conditions in the
Eastern Cape.
The vehicle elicited positive comments
from the children as well, who loved their
own cup containers and the roomy back
s e at s .
The pull-up shades on the rear windows
provided shade from the winter sun
which streams through the large
windows.
SEAN HEIDEMANN
THE golfing fraternity is in mourning
after the terrible news that one of
Komani’s finest golfers, Asanda
Qoba, passed away at the weekend.
Condolences to this fine young
gentleman’s family. His friendly,
happy demeanour will be missed by
all. It is also a great loss to the
Border Country District side.
He was selected as a reserve for
this year’s team and also played in
previous years. Rest in peace
Asanda, a life taken too young.
On Saturday, the Komani league
side played their first fixture at
Gonubie Golf Club against Cathcart.
A fine performance saw them take
the win 6-3. Foursome scores: Colin
Hartley and Cor Oosthuizen beat
Kenny Brown and James Hart 1 up,
Garry Brown and Johnny de Villiers
beat David Thetelwa and Mike
doors at the sides ensure easy and safe
access, a great addition for any mom or
dad needing to load up their brood on a
regular basis.
Beautifully styled with a sleek,
aerodynamic and imposing exterior and a
rather impressive grill on the nose, the
Kia Grand Sedona is a picture to behold.
The spacious cockpit ensures that both
the driver and passengers can travel in
supreme comfort, while enjoying the
elegance of a sleekly designed centre
console with all the gadgets you may
need.
The heated steering wheel was a
definite hit, while the superior seat
materials elicited many compliments, and
look easy to clean.
Another unusual – but welcome –
feature is the presence of a second
cubbyhole in the front, which provides
perfect packing place for all those extra
goodies required by the kids.
The back seats fold down if more
packing place is needed, while the
Drive to grow aerobics in Komani
SIVENATHI GOSA
KOMANI residents braved the cold on
Saturday morning and joined the
Tyronmilas aerobics mini marathon
at Thobi Kula Indoor Sport Centre.
The event was hosted in
conjunction with the department of
sport, recreation, arts and culture for
the second consecutive year.
Participants enjoyed a variety of
styles, ranging from taebo to zumba,
hi lo and step, and competed in
categories for youth, adults and
veterans.
Assistant manager of sport
development, Mxolisi Vanda, said the
main vision of the event was to grow
aerobics in Komani.
“Our main objective is to have a
MAXWELL LEVINE
OLD Collegians made it
two wins on the trot,
while it was two consecutive
losses for Breakers
and Shining Stars.
OC seem to have
turned the corner with
their second win of the
season, taking all five
points in their 33-18
victory over Ready Blues
away. Last week’s derby
victory over Shining Stars
must have boosted the
team’s confidence. They
are pushing hard for a
top two finish with six
matches to play.
OC have moved to
sixth on the table with 11
points from four matches.
Shining Stars were
handed a 33-14 hiding at
home by table toppers
Black Eagles. Stars have
found the going tough in
their last two outings.
Black Eagles top the
log on 19 points and are
unbeaten after four
matches while Stars have
dropped to fourth on 13
unified structure that can take
aerobics to greater heights.
“We want to focus on the youth
because we want to distract them
from activities that could ruin their
future. For the adults, we want to
promote a healthy lifestyle.”
Vanda said selectors would choose
the 22 best participants who would
compete in national events.
Pamela Rayi said she had decided
to compete as she wanted to prove
that she could do anything,
regardless of her weight.
“I want to reduce the risk of
getting diabetes or high blood
pressure,” Rayi said.
Sanelisiwe Funani said he decided
to join the gym two years ago to
keep healthy and to lose weight. “I
a 12-0 lead. Breakers
recovered and hit back
through nippy fullback
Nkunku Mbusi. He
single-handedly brought
his side back into the
match by scoring through
a penalty before dazzling
his way through the Old
try which he converted.
The teams went into
This weekend Breakers
face another tough
assignment against Fort
matches or they will find
themselves in a
relegation battle.
WSU travel to
Cambridge, with Buffs
facing an out-of-sorts
Police side. Old Boys can
Teagan is our
new Junior Bok
GHS pupil to
play in New
Zealand in July
SONJA RAASCH
S
HE first walked on to a
squash court at the age of 11.
Five years later, and
Komani’s Teagan Roux
has just been announced as a
Junior Springbok.
The Girls’ High School pupil said
she started playing squash as she
was not entirely sure which sport
she wanted to play. “Squash was
the one that clicked.”
The 16-year-old has climbed the
ranks of Border, provincial and
national squash and has, since the
age of 13, committed herself
wholeheartedly to her pursuit of
excellence in squash.
“It was after a Border squash
inter-provincial tourney that I
decided that I did not want to lose
anymore and that I wanted to take
my squash to the next level.”
And so she did. Training, dedication and
a positive mindset from the Queenstown
squash league, Border Squash and GHS
coach Dee Brill have helped her on her
way to success.
On May 17, the good news that she was
a Junior Springbok was conveyed to Roux,
who admits that she was “overwhelmed
by joy”.
WHAT A GIRL! Teagan Roux of GHS has achieved Junior
Springbok status in squash
She will be travelling to Touranga in
New Zealand on July 12, returning on July
30, and will be representing South Africa
in the tourney.
Her message to other aspiring athletes
is to “never give up, work hard and back
your training – do not just rely on school
practices”.
She said the fact that Queen’s College
allowed the players of GHS consistent
access to their courts helped immensely
(GHS do not have their own squash
cour ts).
“The GHS first team has six players and
all six put in hours of training. We do not
just rely on the school practices to take
our squash to the next level, we put in the
extra hours as we have the desire to
achieve. We also have players from the
Queenstown squash league who play
against us which assists in our growth.”
Her aim is to make the senior national
team, play on the world women’s circuit
– and she would love to see squash
being recognised as an Olympic sport.
“I would never have been able to
achieve what I have without the
support of my parents, Chris and
Tracey. My dad will always take me to
squash, no matter how late or early it
is. He will take me to every
tournament he can and he always
encourages me to keep fighting. He
has shown me how to be a
sportsman and I am forever
grateful. My mom is my rock and
supports and motivates me. I know I
get my fighter spirit from her.”
With Technifibre as her sponsor,
Roux said she was also grateful for
their support, while she clings to
her faith.
“God has blessed me with the talent
and has given me the strength and
courage to pursue my dreams.”
She has also extended her gratitude to
those within the community who have
assisted in raising the R65000 needed for
her to participate in the tournament in
New Zealand.
Ta l e n t e d
youngster
a gem in
the making
EVERY human being has a
talent. There are no chosen
ones. You just have to find
what you are great at and tap
into it. Eulon Redcliffe has
certainly found what he is good
at – r u g by.
Is this young man the next
big thing to come from
Komani? asks Maxwell Levine.
Redcliffe is a utility backline
player with his favourite
position at fullback. He has the
build, speed, raw skill and an
accurate boot. All of these
attributes make him a great
candidate to succeed at the
highest level.
At the tender age of 15, he
has all the time in the world to
go through specialised training
and techniques to make him
one of the best. This region is
blessed with talented p l ay e r s
who have gone on to make it in
their careers, and in Redcliffe,
another gem seems to be in
the making.
Born and bred in Komani and
hailing from New Rest, Eulon
started his rugby career early
on by playing scrumhalf as a
six-year-old for the
Southbourne under-10 team
under Peet van der Walt for two
years. He then went to Queen’s
Junior in Grade 3.
After playing a couple of
years for various teams, his last
match was in the U13A team as
fullback. In 2015, he joined his
parents in Bloemfontein and
immediately started in the No15
jersey for the U14 team at Jim
Fouche High School. He
doubled up playing 7s rugby
for Castle Bridge on Thursdays
and 15-man rugby for Jim
Fouche on Saturdays. In that
same year, his potential was
ON HIS WAY TO GREATNESS:
Komani residents are raising
funds to assist young rugby
star Eulon Redcliffe on his way
to greatness
spotted as he was called up to
represent the Cheetahs U15
team. At the tender age of 13
he did exceptionally well,
playing at inside centre.
Last year he was again
selected to play for the
Cheetahs U15s and played
fullback. He also received an
invitation to play in Ireland, but
due to his tight school
schedule, he chose not to go as
he was elevated to Grade 10
after his first term in Grade 9.
This year, Redcliffe
represents the Jim Fouche
U16A team and still plays in the
7s Independent Schools
League. He was again invited
this year to play in Ireland with
the Cheetahs U16 team, which
he accepted.
There is a saying, “Reaching
the top is easy, but staying
there is the most difficult part.”
The Redcliffe family faces
challenges, with the tour
package a hefty R39000.
Proud father Gene Redcliffe
said, “We are extremely proud
of Eulon’s achievements thus
far. We would like to give him
every opportunity to fulfil his
potential. This tour to Ireland
will be the perfect stepping
stone to greater things and can
open doors for him.”
Family and friends have been
fundraising for Redcliffe for a
while and there will be a
fundraising disco tomorrow
night at Club Echo in Komani to
raise funds for the tour.
Anyone who wants to donate
or assist in this regard can
contact Levine on 082-377-5616
or Gene Redcliffe 079-926-3169.
