STREET LIGHT OUT??
Please don’t call PCMI. Contact CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222
or go to their website to report an outage. You will need to get the
number that’s on the side of the light pole to let them know which
light is out and where the pole is located.
OLD FENCES - WARPED, BROKEN & ROTTING
As you all know, most of the fences in our community are 10 to 12
years old by now, some are bowed, cracked, leaning and overall deteriorated.
We encourage all residents to consider repairing, rebuilding
and/or replacing at least the portions facing the street. This will make
it safe for residents and pets and enhance our neighborhood, thus
keep our home values up.
BEFORE YOU SUBMIT AN ARCHITECTURAL REQUEST
If your project involves constructing something anywhere in your
yard, first call 811 to have someone from the utilities come out and
determine where pipes and wires are in the ground. Also check your
“plat of survey” to determine if there are any easements on your
property that limit where and what you can construct. Please keep
in mind that, if you build over pipes or wires and there is a problem,
you may be forced to dig up or take down whatever you built.
Lost Creek | June 2017
YARD OF THE MONTH
During each month from April through September, five homes that
have the best looking front yard will be selected. The HOA Board of Directors
will then select from those five the one home most deserving
of the award. The selected homeowner will receive a $100 check. In
addition, a Yard of the Month sign will be displayed in their front yard
for one month. A homeowner can only win once in any year and the
homeowner’s account must be current. Lost Creek Board members
are excluded from receiving the award. The April winner in 2017 is:
Huong Pham at 7439 Boerne Creek.
CONTRIBUTORS WANTED FOR NEWSLETTER
As you can see, the Lost Creek Newsletter is getting a bit repetitive.
Surely at least a few Lost Creek homeowners can contribute items
for our community newsletter. I’m are not asking for people to do
the whole newsletter, just write up a single article once in a while.
I’ll even take suggestions as to what topic you would like to see
included. Please be aware that material has to be submitted to the
publisher five weeks in advance of the Newsletter issue date. If you
wish to contribute something informative or newsworthy about our
community, please submit it by the 22 nd of the month in Word format
as an attachment to this email address: lostcreeknewsletter@
outlook.com. THANK YOU!!
COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
COMMERCIAL VEHICLES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE PARKED OVERNIGHT
ON ANY OF THE STREETS WITHIN LOST CREEK.
DO NOT LET YOUR PETS RUN FREE IN LOST CREEK
Common household pets must be confined to a fenced-in backyard or in the
house. Pets are not allowed to roam free outside of your house or outside
of your fenced-in backyard. When walking your dog or other pet away from
your property, it must be on a leash at all times within Lost Creek. This is a
Fort Bend County ordinance as well as a Lost Creek regulation.
ARCHITECTURAL REQUESTS
Lost Creek is a planned community with an HOA and the documents,
which govern it. This means that all homeowners in the community
must abide by certain rules and regulations regarding what a homeowner
can and cannot do on his/her property. The objectives are to
keep the appearance of all of the properties attractive and maintain
home values here in Lost Creek. Having no rules and regulations or not
enforcing them, allows a community to degrade. Please be aware that
the Architectural Review Committee will not approve requests made
by homeowners whose assessment account is in arrears.
PLEASE SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP
Don’t contribute to the spread of disease. Young children sometimes
pick up pet poop and play with it not knowing what it is. When you
walk your dog, respect all yards and sidewalks in our neighborhood as
well as Lost Creek’s community property. Remember to bring either a
scooper and/or plastic bags to pick up the poop and place in trash at
home or in the trashcan at the rec center. Thank you.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!! JUNE 18TH
Father’s Day 2017 is not a federal holiday and falls on the third
Sunday of June. The date of the Holiday changes each year but
always remains on a Sunday.
Significance of Father’s Day 2017
It is a day that commemorates fatherhood and appreciates all
fathers and father-figures (including grandfathers, great-grandfathers,
stepfathers and foster fathers), as well as their contribution
to society.
History of Father’s Day
The History of Father’s Day 2017 dates back to 1910 in Spokane,
Washington, where 27-year-old Sonora Dodd proposed it as a way
to honor the man (a civil war veteran William Jackson Smart) who
raised her and her five siblings alone after her mom died in childbirth.
Dodd was at a church thinking about how grateful she was for her
father when she had the idea for Father’s Day, which would mirror
Mother’s Day but be celebrated in June, her dad’s birthday month.
It is said that she was inspired after hearing a sermon about Jarvis’
Mother’s Day in 1909 at Central Methodist Episcopal Church and
she therefore told her pastor that fathers should have a similar
holiday honoring them. A bill to nationally recognize the holiday
was introduced in Congress in 1913.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a
Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress
resisted, with the fear that it was just another commercialized
holiday. The movement grew for years but only became popular
nationally in 1924 under former President Calvin Coolidge.
The holiday gained popularity during World War II, with most men
leaving their families to fight in the war. In 1966, President Lyndon
B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June to be Father’s
Day. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the
day be celebrated by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a
national proclamation.
Two attempts to formally recognize the holiday had earlier been
rejected by Congress. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued
the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating
the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day
was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard
Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
Traditions of Father’s Day 2017
Traditionally, families gather to celebrate the father figures in their
lives. Father’s Day is a relatively modern holiday so different families
have a range of traditions. Many people send or give cards or
traditionally masculine gifts such as sports items or clothing, electronic
gadgets, outdoor cooking supplies and tools for household
maintenance. In the days and weeks leading to Father’s Day, many
schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small
gift for their fathers. Additionally, the US Open golf tournament is
scheduled to finish on Father’s Day.
LESSONS FROM DAD
Taken from a blog from Huffington Post:
Fatherly Wisdom:
• Your reputation is everything.
Don’t do or say anything that can tarnish that.
• Tip well. It could be you on the other end.
• Make someone smile. Be polite, friendly and treat people well,
regardless of who they are or their position in life.
This includes knowing when to say: Please, Thank you and I’m sorry.
• Beauty will fade, so develop your brain. Read. Get an education.
• There are three kinds of people in the world: those that watch things
happen, those that make things happen and those that say
“What happened?” Be a person that makes things happen.
• Humor is the ultimate icebreaker, way to connect and coping
mechanism.
• Believe in God.
• Be a gracious host and make people feel welcome in your home.
• Give back to your community and give often.
• Marry someone kind, smart and hardworking, who treats
their mother well.
• Watch what you say, as you can hurt and alienate people
with your words.
• Be a good friend. Always be generous. Be affectionate.
Take care of those around you.
• Money doesn’t grow on trees, so don’t be wasteful.
• Put yourself out there. You won’t meet anyone or make friends
as a shut-in.
• Don’t lie; it’s too stressful to have to remember what you said.
Don’t be a know-it-all. And don’t brag.
• Love and honor your parents and siblings and always
call your grandparents.
• Don’t be so quick to judge a person or situation - good or bad.
WHAT DAD REALLY WANTS FOR FATHER’S DAY!
What do dads really want for Father’ Day? While a majority of women
thought that tickets to a sporting event would put a smile on Dad’s face,
it turns out that what would really make pappy happy is a new tablet
or smartphone.
Completing the top five gifts American dads would like to receive are:
1. New tablet or smart phone
2. A home-cooked meal that they love
3. Tickets to a sporting event
4. Power tools
5. A guilt-free weekend with friends
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete
to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a
2-inch height now to protect
roots from the sun. Never cut
off more than a third of the
leaf.
• Continue treatment of
lawns for chinch bug. As
the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to
reproduce in the hottest and
driest part of the lawn, usually
next to cement. Use diazinon
or dursban granules.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage
more of the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,
Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,
Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs
for the rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber,
Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash
and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for
next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch
well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material
on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by
reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying
wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water
and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3
inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
NATURE’S CLEAN-UP CREW
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
You always know when an animal has met an untimely and unfortunate
death when you see Black Vultures or Turkey Vultures. So how can you
tell the difference? The Black Vulture has a featherless black-grey head
while the Turkey Vulture has a featherless red head. In flight, the Black
Vulture is distinguishable by white-tipped wings, whereas the majority
of the underside of the Turkey Vulture is pale in color.
Both species of vultures feed primarily on carrion. Most of what vultures
eat would make any other animal very sick but they are strong animals
with an incredible digestive system and a very strong immune system.
Their stomachs are extremely acidic. They can usually survive eating
carcasses infected with botulism, anthrax, cholera and salmonella.
Some believe that vultures spread disease because they eat dead meat.
Actually, the opposite is true. They rid our environment of what could
potentially cause the spread of diseases.
Turkey Vultures use their eyesight and keen sense of smell to find their
food. By flying low, they are able to see dead animals and detect the
gases produced when an animal begins to decay. They prefer to feed
on animals that are recently dead. Black Vultures can’t smell but will
often follow Turkey Vultures to find food.
The breeding season of the turkey vulture starts in March, peaks in April
to May, and continues into June. Interestingly, vultures don’t make
nests. In most cases, females lay two eggs but have been known to lay
one and rarely three. The eggs are whitish/cream colored and heavily
marked with dark brown or lavender spots around the larger end. Eggs
are generally laid on a bare surface in a protected location. T
WRC receives many calls from the public reporting that a vulture took
up residence in their atrium or on their front porch.
Both parents incubate and the young hatch after 30 to 40 days. Chicks
are altricial or helpless at birth. Both adults feed the chicks by regurgitating
food for them and care for them for 10 to 11 weeks. When adults
are threatened while nesting, they may flee or they may regurgitate
on the intruder or feign death. If the chicks are threatened in the nest,
they defend themselves by hissing and regurgitating. Family groups
will remain together until fall.
Although not endangered, vultures have been impacted by the use of
lead bullets and buckshot used by hunters. If the shot animal is not
removed or covered, vultures will consume the contaminated meat
and become ill or die.
Because of their eating habits and appearance, vultures would probably
never win a “My Favorite Bird” contest or “Most Beautiful Bird” award
but they play an important role in keeping our environment cleaner and
definitely smelling better. Have you thanked a vulture today?
PET INFORMATION
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop when
your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas, there
are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of
your neighbors work hard with their lawncare
and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a
recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking
up after your pets shows your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet
feces damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
FT. BEND COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid
of animals and become frightened, which
could result in the child getting hurt trying
to avoid the animal. Although most dog bites
occur on the property where the dog lives,
unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a
threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained
animals are at increased risk of being bitten
by rabies-infected wildlife.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is
not properly restrained please contact
Ft. Bend County Animal Control -281-342-1512
“LEASH LAW” INFORMATION
Animal control authorities are permitted to
enter your Property to patrol and remove
pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and
inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the
control of your dog. If your dog is one that
‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make
every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right
to their ‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative
that you keep your dog on a leash
at all times. While your dog is friendly to you
and your family, imagine the consequences
if it were to harm someone while it was
‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk
the common area ground without fear of
attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals
are confined to their property or kept on
a leash to free a community of unrestrained
and free-roaming animals. Although most
dog bites occur on the property where the
dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs
do pose a substantial threat to the public.
In addition, unrestrained animals are at
increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected
wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws
is essential in enhancing the animal control
program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies
in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals
is identification,
should that animal become lost.
Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of
a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administra
tion costs of the animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for
licensing dogs and cats because they are an
important control measure for the public
health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting
pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier
between infected wild animals and humans.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and
restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond
noisily to any and all activity. Nothing
is as annoying as incessant barking-even for
dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler,
please consider some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise down in your
area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you,
too. You may get some insight into why your
dog barks so much, or what it is trying to
communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing
an outspoken dog indoors or confining it
to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to
neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close
drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave
a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals;
they need companionship-a cat, bird or
another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from
a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off
at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once
or twice a week.
CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are,
please consider and suggest rescuing vs.
buying a dog from a breeder. We have every
breed of purebred dog available in our Texas
pounds and shelters, in great quantities.
This is because of the complete lack of any
regulations or limit on breeding in Texas.
• Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in
pounds involve purebred animals.
• Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no
chance of making it out of the pounds alive.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with
these dogs; they just had the misfortune of
being owned by people who did not provide
for their needs and care and obviously had
no real commitment to their pet.
• Countless numbers of people turn their
own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump
them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let
them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality
that most dog lovers do not understand.
• When you or someone you know considers
adopting a dog, please check out one of our
five local animal shelters:
Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city
