ARTICLES FROM RESIDENTS
ARE NEEDED FOR THE NEWSLETTER
We need your help. Anyone who has won
awards or received special recognition from
club, school, church, etc., please let us know.
We need updates from Clubs, Swimmers, Band,
Choir, Dance, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boy
Scouts, Athletics, etc. Have a fundraiser? Let
your neighbors know about it. We have over
975 families and 975 stories to tell each month.
So come on and let us know. Articles can be
emailed to news@krenekprinting.com.
SAFETY CORNER
Remember to keep all cars and trucks locked and windows rolled up. Call
on any suspicious persons or vehicles. We need everyone’s help here.
Please call the Constables at 281-463-6666.
PARK USE
Park hours have been posted. Park hours are 8 AM to 8 PM. Also, those
wishing to play baseball in the park or street, please be careful. Any
damage done to resident’s property is the responsibility of those parents
of the children that cause it. Also it has been brought to the Board’s
attention that use of foul language and trouble at the park must stop. If
Constables report such behavior, individuals may become barred from
park/pool area. Let’s all have fun and play nice. Older kids watch out
for little ears nearby. Remember, $250 reward to anyone who provides
information about damage or vandalism to the park. This reward will
be paid and no one will ever know who reported such damage.
ABANDONED OR OVERGROWN PROPERTY
Do you live next door or near someone who has abandoned or left a
house vacant? Has the grass grown two or more feet high? Are there
rodents and snakes coming from their backyards? Would you like to
get the property cleaned up? Can you see over the back fence from
your property?
If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you are the
one who needs to make the first move in getting this matter resolved.
Williamsburg Colony Maintenance Association cannot call the Harris
County Health Department at 713-439-6270, since we can only report
on property adjacent to the front entrance and the Pool/ Clubhouse
areas. We need someone who will give permission for the Health Department
to come on their property to view violations of neighbors.
So please, help us get rid of dangerous conditions in our subdivision.
Williamsburg Colony | June 2017
STREET LIGHTS
Your Association pays for your streetlights from your annual dues,
whether they work or not. If a light is out in your area, please call 713-
207-2222 and report it. Each light pole should have a number on it. When
reporting the out or malfunctioning light, give them the pole number
and closest street address. We want all of our lights to work. A lighted
area is a safer area.
CURFEW REMINDER
We would like to remind residents that being in Harris County means
those under the age of 18 must not be roaming the streets after midnight.
Any children spotted after midnight should be reported to the Constables
at 281-463-6666. Most of the trouble we have in the subdivision that is
attributed to mischievous minors occurs after the curfew. Once park
hours are posted, anyone in the park after hours will be charged with
trespassing.
GARAGE SALE SIGNS
To all Williamsburg Colony residents, garage sales are great, we can
increase our attic and closet space, locate things we forgot that we
had and most important, make a few extra bucks. The one thing that is
sometimes forgotten is the placement and removal of our garage sale
signs. So please neighbors, if and when you have a garage sale, let’s try
and remember not to place garage sale signs on any of our community
signs or poles. Also, remove signs that are staked when your garage sale
is complete. Cleaner streets do make a difference.
WILLIAMSBURG COLONY TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS
we do not hear back from you after 3 tries, we will remove you from the
What Do People Do?
Flag Day falls within National Flag Week, a time when Americans reflect
on the foundations of the nation’s freedom. The flag of the United States
represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s
ideals since its early days. During both events, Americans also remember
their loyalty to the nation, reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice and
observe the nation’s unity.
Many people in the United States honor this day by displaying the American
flag at homes and public buildings. Other popular ways of observing
this holiday include: flag-raising ceremonies; Flag Day services; school
quizzes and essay competitions about the American flag; musical salutes;
street parades and awards for special recognition.
Organizations such as The National Flag Day Foundation are actively
involved in coordinating activities centered on the event and keeping the
flag’s traditions alive. Following Flag Day is Honor America Days, a 21-day
period through to Independence Day (July 4 th ) to honor America. During
this period, people hold public gatherings and activities to celebrate and
honor the nation.
Public Life
Although Flag Day is a nationwide observance, it is not a public holiday
in many parts of the United States. It is a legal holiday in a few areas in
the USA, such as Montour County in Pennsylvania.
Background
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols
of the Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars in a
circle on a field of blue and 13 red and white stripes - one for each state. Although
it is not certain, this flag may have been made by the Philadelphia
seamstress Betsy Ross, who was an official flag maker for the Pennsylvania
Navy. The number of stars increased as the new states entered the Union,
but the number of stripes stopped at 15 and was later returned to 13.
In June 1886, Bernard Cigrand made his first public proposal for the annual
observance of the birth of the flag when he wrote an article titled “The
Fourteenth of June” in the old Chicago Argus newspaper. Cigrand’s effort
to ensure national observance of Flag Day finally came when President
Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance
of the event on June 14, 1916. However, Flag Day did not become
official until August 1949, when President Harry Truman signed the
legislation and proclaimed June 14 th as Flag Day. In 1966, Congress also
requested that the President issue annually a proclamation designating
the week in which June 14 th occurs as National Flag Week.
Each year the President is requested to issue a proclamation to: call on
government officials in the USA to display the flag of the United States
on all government buildings on Flag Day and to urge US residents to
observe Flag Day as the anniversary of the adoption on June 14, 1777,
by the Continental Congress of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag
of the United States.
Symbols
The American flag, also nicknamed as “Old Glory” or “star-spangled banner,”
has changed designs over the centuries. It consists of 13 equal horizontal
stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle
in the canton bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars. Each of the 50
stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes
represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union.
GARDEN TIPS
FOR JUNE
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or
chelete to St. Augustine
grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to
a 2-inch height now to
protect roots from the
sun. Never cut off more
than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of
lawns for chinch bug.
As the temperature hits
80 degrees, chinch bugs
begin to reproduce in the
hottest and driest part of
the lawn, usually next to
cement. Use diazinon or
dursban granules.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage
more of the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,
Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,
Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs
for the rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber,
Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash
and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for
next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch
well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material
on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by
reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying
wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water
and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3
inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
the number of bands being determined by total enrollment for the
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an
all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and
homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers
search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless
and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the
US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide.
According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on
the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless
youth in the U.S.
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which
provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the
homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to
hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me
at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For
Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.
org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our
continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we
care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.
communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving
in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by
its volunteer workforce located across the United States.
After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was
as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III
When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range
from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages
full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most
important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages
making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have
to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last
a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a
program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult
Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop
hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course
is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks
sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW
programs that help change lives with hands-on community service?
CUT CALORIES, WITHOUT TRYING!
We have to reduce 3,500 calories to lose one pound. Sounds difficult? It is
very easy. Check out these easy ways to cut calories and not even notice!
• Use a smaller plate or bowl - this forces you to put less on
your plate/bowl.
• Put your fork/spoon down between each bite - it takes 15-20 minutes
for your brain to sense your stomach is full. Savor each bite of
food by putting down your fork/spoon.
• Chew your food more - this is a BIG must. Mom always said “chew
your food. Your stomach doesn’t have teeth in it.” Experts say to
chew each bite 39 times. This makes us eat slower and enjoy
each bite.
• Power down - turn off the TV, put away the phone and focus on
your food! Else we end up eating more.
• START your meal with a salad - say no to the bread basket or chips.
Say yes to the salad with dressing on the side. It’s a few extra dollars
that will help you shed many more calories!
• Make fruits and veggies the biggest part of your meal - Nutrition
experts say your plate should be as colorful as the rainbow. Aim for
fresh veggies with your meals and end with fresh fruit for dessert!
NATURE’S CLEAN-UP CREW
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
You always know when an animal has met an untimely and unfortunate
death when you see Black Vultures or Turkey Vultures. So how can you
tell the difference? The Black Vulture has a featherless black-grey head
while the Turkey Vulture has a featherless red head. In flight, the Black
Vulture is distinguishable by white-tipped wings, whereas the majority
of the underside of the Turkey Vulture is pale in color.
Both species of vultures feed primarily on carrion. Most of what vultures
eat would make any other animal very sick but they are strong animals
with an incredible digestive system and a very strong immune system.
Their stomachs are extremely acidic. They can usually survive eating
carcasses infected with botulism, anthrax, cholera and salmonella.
Some believe that vultures spread disease because they eat dead meat.
Actually, the opposite is true. They rid our environment of what could
potentially cause the spread of diseases.
Turkey Vultures use their eyesight and keen sense of smell to find their
food. By flying low, they are able to see dead animals and detect the
gases produced when an animal begins to decay. They prefer to feed
on animals that are recently dead. Black Vultures can’t smell but will
often follow Turkey Vultures to find food.
The breeding season of the turkey vulture starts in March, peaks in April
to May, and continues into June. Interestingly, vultures don’t make
nests. In most cases, females lay two eggs but have been known to lay
one and rarely three. The eggs are whitish/cream colored and heavily
marked with dark brown or lavender spots around the larger end. Eggs
are generally laid on a bare surface in a protected location. T
WRC receives many calls from the public reporting that a vulture took
up residence in their atrium or on their front porch.
Both parents incubate and the young hatch after 30 to 40 days. Chicks
are altricial or helpless at birth. Both adults feed the chicks by regurgitating
food for them and care for them for 10 to 11 weeks. When adults
are threatened while nesting, they may flee or they may regurgitate
on the intruder or feign death. If the chicks are threatened in the nest,
they defend themselves by hissing and regurgitating. Family groups
will remain together until fall.
Although not endangered, vultures have been impacted by the use of
lead bullets and buckshot used by hunters. If the shot animal is not
removed or covered, vultures will consume the contaminated meat
and become ill or die.
Because of their eating habits and appearance, vultures would probably
never win a “My Favorite Bird” contest or “Most Beautiful Bird” award
but they play an important role in keeping our environment cleaner and
definitely smelling better. Have you thanked a vulture today?
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!! JUNE 18TH
Father’s Day 2017 is not a federal holiday and falls on the third
Sunday of June. The date of the Holiday changes each year but
always remains on a Sunday.
Significance of Father’s Day 2017
It is a day that commemorates fatherhood and appreciates all
fathers and father-figures (including grandfathers, great-grandfathers,
stepfathers and foster fathers), as well as their contribution
to society.
History of Father’s Day
The History of Father’s Day 2017 dates back to 1910 in Spokane,
Washington, where 27-year-old Sonora Dodd proposed it as a
way to honor the man (a civil war veteran William Jackson Smart)
who raised her and her five siblings alone after her mom died in
childbirth. Dodd was at a church thinking about how grateful she
was for her father when she had the idea for Father’s Day, which
would mirror Mother’s Day but be celebrated in June, her dad’s
birthday month.
It is said that she was inspired after hearing a sermon about Jarvis’
Mother’s Day in 1909 at Central Methodist Episcopal Church
and she therefore told her pastor that fathers should have a
similar holiday honoring them. A bill to nationally recognize the
holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak
in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official,
but Congress resisted, with the fear that it was just another
commercialized holiday. The movement grew for years but only
became popular nationally in 1924 under former President Calvin
Coolidge.
The holiday gained popularity during World War II, with most
men leaving their families to fight in the war. In 1966, President
Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June to be
Father’s Day. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924
that the day be celebrated by the nation, but stopped short of
issuing a national proclamation.
Two attempts to formally recognize the holiday had earlier been
rejected by Congress. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson
issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers,
designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years
later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when
President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
Traditions of Father’s Day 2017
Traditionally, families gather to celebrate the father figures in
their lives. Father’s Day is a relatively modern holiday so different
families have a range of traditions. Many people send or
give cards or traditionally masculine gifts such as sports items
or clothing, electronic gadgets, outdoor cooking supplies and
tools for household maintenance. In the days and weeks leading
to Father’s Day, many schools help their pupils to prepare a
handmade card or small gift for their fathers. Additionally, the
US Open golf tournament is scheduled to finish on Father’s Day.
LESSONS FROM DAD
Taken from a blog from Huffington Post:
Fatherly Wisdom:
• Your reputation is everything.
Don’t do or say anything that can tarnish that.
• Tip well. It could be you on the other end.
• Make someone smile. Be polite, friendly and treat people well,
regardless of who they are or their position in life.
This includes knowing when to say: Please, Thank you and I’m sorry.
• Beauty will fade, so develop your brain. Read. Get an education.
• There are three kinds of people in the world: those that watch things
happen, those that make things happen and those that say
“What happened?” Be a person that makes things happen.
• Humor is the ultimate icebreaker, way to connect and coping
mechanism.
• Believe in God.
• Be a gracious host and make people feel welcome in your home.
• Give back to your community and give often.
• Marry someone kind, smart and hardworking, who treats
their mother well.
• Watch what you say, as you can hurt and alienate people
with your words.
• Be a good friend. Always be generous. Be affectionate.
Take care of those around you.
• Money doesn’t grow on trees, so don’t be wasteful.
• Put yourself out there. You won’t meet anyone or make friends
as a shut-in.
• Don’t lie; it’s too stressful to have to remember what you said.
Don’t be a know-it-all. And don’t brag.
• Love and honor your parents and siblings and always
call your grandparents.
• Don’t be so quick to judge a person or situation - good or bad.
WHAT DAD REALLY WANTS FOR FATHER’S DAY!
What do dads really want for Father’ Day? While a majority of women
thought that tickets to a sporting event would put a smile on Dad’s face,
it turns out that what would really make pappy happy is a new tablet or
smartphone.
Completing the top five gifts American dads would like to receive are:
1. New tablet or smart phone
2. A home-cooked meal that they love
3. Tickets to a sporting event
4. Power tools
5. A guilt-free weekend with friends
JUNE IS NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH
The sun is up, the birds are singing and the mosquitoes are finally hatching from their larval phase. Ok, it isn’t all rainbows and fresh fish, but
June is Camping Month and it’s a great opportunity to get outside with the family and enjoy the great outdoors. Research shows that people
who spend time camping are happier, more relaxed and tend to buy more bug repellant. What? We don’t like mosquitoes any more than you
do, but we do love camping! Who doesn’t love sitting under the stars roasting marshmallows and making S’mores or waking up to the smell
of wood smoke and bacon?
History of Camping Month
While there was a time when ‘camping’ was just called ‘being alive,’ that all changed in the 1800’s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding
began to popularize the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail and
once he had settled it turned into a passion he pursued and introduced to others. Once camping in general had become popularized, Thomas
went on to introduce the idea of Cycle Camping to the American world. This is, quite simply, where you load up on a bike and ride until you
find a spot to camp, get up the next day and do it all over again.
What is likely the first commercial campground opened in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1894 and was called Cunningham’s Camp. From this point in
history all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from mere weekend family getaways, to RV camping and everything in between.
Whether rafting down a river in a Canoe and setting up camp in the evening or hiking into the woods far from civilization with a backpack full
of your gear, Camping Month celebrates them all.
How to celebrate Camping Month
Well, this has got to be the easiest answer ever, GO CAMPING. Even if it’s just a pop-up tent and sleeping bag in your backyard under the stars,
get out there and reconnect with the great outdoors. There’s a place to find your soul and set your mind to peace out in the great distant
woods and they’re calling all of us to head back out there and find ourselves. So pile into your car, find yourself some secluded spot to set up
a tent and celebrating Camping Month by going camping!
STATE PARKS
BEST PLACES TO CAMP IN TEXAS
Ray Roberts Lake State Park
Ray Roberts Lake State Park is situated on a 3,000-acre
reservoir just north of the hustle and bustle of Dallas.
Campers here are encouraged to hike miles of trails and
primitive camping is available for the practiced adventurer.
The highlight of the park, though, is the clean beach and
easy lake access. Ray Roberts Lake is so big it can often feel
like a seaside bay. Folks out here boat, ski, swim and fish
away the stress of the city in style. The park is also home to
multiple marathons throughout the year.
Lake Bob Sandlin State Park
Campers of Northeast Texas know that it doesn’t get much
more patriotic than spotting the majestic eagles during
winter trips to Lake Bob Sandlin State Park. For the camper
that is also an avid fisherman, Lake Bob Sandlin is a great
spot for largemouth bass, spotted bass and bluegills.
Inks Lake State Park
Tucked away in the Texas Hill Country is Inks Lake State
Park. Hill Country topography mixes with the pristine
water of Inks Lake to create a perfect camping experience.
On land, campers can backpack, geocache and bird-watch.
And on water, campers can boat, ski, fish and even dive
from the cliffs at the popular Devil’s Waterhole section of
the lake.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
The Texas Panhandle is home to Palo Duro Canyon, “The
Grand Canyon of Texas.” Campers here can hike, bike or
horseback through the canyon and view the multicolored
rocks, caves and hoodoos (rock towers). Palo Duro is also
home to the Texas Outdoor Musical, which runs June
through mid-August.
Caprock Canyons State Park
Campers flock to Palo Duro’s neighbor, Caprock Canyons
State Park for both its awesome hiking and its magnificent
wildlife–namely, the Official Bison Herd of the State of
Texas. Over 10,000 acres are reserved for these bison that
descended from a herd started by Charles Goodnight in
1878. The park is also known for its steep cliffs and dropoffs,
which offer experienced hikers and mountain bikers a
challenging adventure.
Davis Mountains State Park
Out in West Texas, Davis Mountains State Park offers
a definitively Texan experience. Here, campers are
encouraged to bring their horses to camp. Horseback
riding trails in the park rise up to 5,700 feet. Don’t fret if
you happen to leave your trusted steed at home. Davis
Mountains State Park also offers hiking, mountain biking,
bird watching and stargazing tours.
Padre Island National Seashore
Camping along the Gulf Coast on the Padre Island National
Seashore is a completely unique experience. The sand and
the sea provide ample opportunity for the beach-loving
camper. Here, campers can watch newborn sea turtles take
to the ocean for the first time, sea kayak below a pod of
pelicans and fish for their dinner.
WATER SAFETY TIPS
COURTESY OF THE “SIMPLE STEPS SAVE LIVES” PROGRAM
1. Staying close, being alert and watching children in and around
the pool
• Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch
your child when he or she is in or near water.
• Teach children basic water safety tips.
• Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings
to avoid entrapments.
• Have a telephone close by when you or your family is using
a pool or spa.
• If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first.
• Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors.
2. Learning and practicing water safety skills
• Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim.
• Learn to perform CPR on children and adults and update those
skills regularly.
• Understand the basics of life-saving so that you can assist in
a pool emergency.
3. Having appropriate equipment for your pool or spa
• Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa
and use self-closing and self latching gates; ask your neighbors
to do the same at their pools.
• Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa.
• If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install
door alarms and always use them. For additional protection,
install window guards on windows facing pools or spas.
• Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water.
• Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers and ask your
pool service provider if you don’t know.
• Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order.
• Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm.
PET INFORMATION
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop when
your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas, there
are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of
your neighbors work hard with their lawncare
and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a
recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking
up after your pets shows your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet
feces damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid of
animals and become frightened, which could
result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid
the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All
dogs and cats must be kept under restraint
while in the unincorporated areas of Harris
County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat
is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any
unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog
or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog
or cat under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not
more than six (6) feet in length, if the line
or leash is held by a human being, who is
capable of controlling or governing the dog
or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian
and the animal does not have access to sidewalk
or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal
out in the yard while you work or play, it is
against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and
comfortable place for all our residents by
being responsible pet owners. This will not
only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling
in the area, but also the pet owner who
could be held legally responsible or possibly
sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
To make a complaint or report an animal that
is not properly restrained please contact:
5 STEPS TO A
HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather
(heat, cold, rain, etc.).
2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on
a leash when walked.
3. Make sure they’re up to date with
vaccinations.
4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification,
so they can be returned to you if lost.
5. Spay or neuter your pet.
Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are
waiting to go to their forever home. Please
check out their website at txlabrescue.org.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and
restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond
noisily to any and all activity. Nothing
is as annoying as incessant barking-even for
dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler,
please consider some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise down in your
area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you,
too. You may get some insight into why your
dog barks so much, or what it is trying to
communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing
an outspoken dog indoors or confining it
to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to
neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close
drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave
a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals;
they need companionship-a cat, bird or
another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from
a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off
at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once
or twice a week.
CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are,
please consider and suggest rescuing vs.
buying a dog from a breeder. We have every
breed of purebred dog available in our Texas
pounds and shelters, in great quantities.
This is because of the complete lack of any
regulations or limit on breeding in Texas.
• Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in
pounds involve purebred animals.
• Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no
chance of making it out of the pounds alive.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with
these dogs; they just had the misfortune of
being owned by people who did not provide
for their needs and care and obviously had
no real commitment to their pet.
• Countless numbers of people turn their
own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump
them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let
them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality
that most dog lovers do not understand.
