YEARBOOK 2016-2017
President’s Message
Dear Alumni, Students, Family and Friends,
On behalf of Virginia International University, it is my pleasure to congratulate all 2016-2017
graduating students on their achievements. Also, I would like to congratulate their families, friends, and
others that somehow supported these students in accomplishing their goals and dreams.
During their academic journey, many of our students had various hurdles on their way. However,
they were able to overcome many challenges and move closer to their dreams. This yearbook will share
some of the precious moments that our graduating students had during their time at VIU.
It is good to remember that VIU made significant changes to the scholarship program by providing
additional opportunities to our current and prospective students as well as offering Financial Aid for local
students. As a result, the scholarship program helped our qualified and distinctive students attain their goals
and overcome any financial constraints. VIU is also proud that our students have come from 85 different
countries of the world learning together, exchanging experiences, and making lifelong friendships.
As graduating students, you have reached another step in your life. You are now, and for all years to
come, one of VIU’s alumni. We encourage you to be energetic participants in the growing alumni community
and participate in our alumni mentoring program. You will be encouraged to share your professional
experiences, which may inspire current university students in pursuing their objectives and dreams. No
matter what obstacles life might have for you, you must believe that you are prepared to lead with
excellence. Your confidence and great leadership skills will help make your way through the everyday
challenges.
Thank you for letting VIU be part of your successful life endeavors. We, as family and friends, are very
proud of you. Your actions in pursuing academic improvement will always be remembered, and I hope this
yearbook becomes a symbol of this special period of your life. Best of luck,
Dr. Isa Sarac
President
Executive Vice President of Student & University Affairs
Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,
It is a privilege to have you navigate through this yearbook, in an experience that will spawn feelings
of joy and fulfillment.
Two years ago, when accepting the position of Executive Vice President of the office of Student and
University Affairs at VIU, I was very excited yet anxious for the new opportunity to contribute to VIU’s
student retention. As a new established office, we committed to carrying out VIU's mission to provide the
best services for our students and enhance our relationship with each and every student at VIU.
Since then, our Office and all VIU staff and faculty have been working sincerely and strenuously
toward these goals, and it is so heartwarming and delightful for me to see the achievement of our students.
Equally important, our graduates and their family are acknowledged for helping fulfill our mission. So to our
dear parents, guardians, friends and family, it is our sincere hope that somehow we have lived up to your
expectations.
As you read through this book, please keep in mind that VIU is after much more than providing your
children, friends, and family a degree. In a world filled with so many choices to pursue your DREAM, we thank
you for choosing VIU as your destination of higher education. Our goal is to provide all VIU students with the
opportunity to DISCOVER their strength, excel in academics and become valuable contributing members of
their communities.
Congratulation to VIU’s Class of 2017! Our entire team at VIU and I are very proud that you have
come here to ACCOMPLISH this defining milestone. It is your time to step out and apply all of your
accumulative knowledge to make a different world. Thank you for letting us be a part of your memory, and I
hope this yearbook has highlighted our favorite and significant memories together.
As you move forward with your life, promise yourself that you will keep alive the finest of VIU’s values
and traditions and that you will keep in touch and serve your community with VIU distinction.
Take care and best of luck,
Dr. Suleyman Bahceci
Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs
I am pleased to have been asked to offer a few words to you who have successfully completed the
requirements of your academic program at Virginia International University.
Despite the sacrifices you and your family have made, despite the challenges you have met in the
course of your studies, at the end of it all, you completed this part of your life journey with self-satisfaction,
increased knowledge and lasting memories. We trust that the experiences and the education VIU has
provided will serve you well in the years ahead. All of the members of the VIU community have contributed
to you attaining this impressive milestone in your life and we are honored to have served you and we are
proud of your many achievements over these past few years.
But, please know that you have also enriched our lives and your life experiences have impacted us.
We have all learned as much from you as you have learned from us; this is the meaning of a community,
and we want you to leave knowing that VIU will ALWAYS be a place where you will be welcomed.
On behalf of my fellow colleagues, I wish to thank you for sharing your lives with us and for the
dedication you have demonstrated towards your studies, in your relationships with your professors, with
our staff, and among your fellow students.
I have but several requests of all graduating students – that you always see yourselves as good
ambassadors of Virginia International University, that you always seek to serve others, and that you
continue to be open and generous to people throughout life’s journey.
On behalf of the University, I wish you best of luck in your days ahead and may you always think
fondly on the friends you have made here, as well as the rich life experiences that you have found while at
VIU. Thank you.
Dr. Ronald Kovach

On behalf of all Faculty and staff, it is my pleasure to congratulate all our graduating students. We could not
be more proud and joyful for your well-deserved accomplishments. I am confident that you will be successful
in the next chapter of your life as leading practitioners in the field of computing and worthy VIU
new challenges and opportunities. You are now poised to be part of shaping a better world for everyone.
I encourage you to never stop the learning process and stay in touch with your VIU family. We will always be
All the best!
Dr. Chakib Chraibi, Ph.D.
Dean of the School of Business
Dear Graduates,
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the School of Business, congratulations on earning your degree! It has
been our privilege to be a part of your journey. We commend you on your hard work and commitment and
recognize the sacrifices that you made along the way. This commencement marks a new beginning for you,
and we wish you good luck and awesome success. We look forward to hearing about your achievements as
you continue to pursue your goals and dreams that take you to new and exciting places.
Dr. Grace Klinefelter
Dean of the School of Public and International Affairs
The School of Public and International Affairs opened its doors in Fall 2013 with two programs, a Master of
Science in International Relations (MIR) and a Master of Public Administration (MPA). The MIR program
offers two concentrations for students to choose from: International Economic Development and
International Business. The MPA program offers three concentrations: Public Management, Information
Systems, and Health Care Administration and Public Health. These programs are offered both on-campus
and partially online.
The analysis and practice of governmental and international affairs in the 21st Century requires a
multidisciplinary and complex approach, combining knowledge from the social sciences, policy studies,
business administration, economics, computing technologies, and the sciences. SPIA programs are designed
to incorporate key elements of these disciplines into a multidimensional and academically challenging
program that prepares students to be problem-solvers in today’s demanding public arena. Students will
acquire both the scholarly knowledge and the confidence of practical experience to address and tackle the
challenges of the modern workplace.
Dr. Klara Bilgin
Associate Dean of the School of Education
Dear 2016-2017 Graduates,
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the School of Education at VIU, I congratulate you on your graduation!
This is an exciting time in your life, as you embark on a new part of your journey. Just remember that the
journey may not always be easy, but your studies and the lifelong relationships that you have established
while at VIU can serve as a roadmap.
I hope that you will focus on dreaming big and serving as a positive-change agent who makes the world a
little better every day at a time. As Nelson Mandela once said “education is the most powerful weapon you
can use to change the world.” This exemplifies what it means to be a VIU graduate, as you work to make the
world a better place by applying and building upon what you have learned from your time at VIU.
I also hope that you realize that, although you may be graduating, you are always a part of our VIU family. In
fact, your graduation signals your induction into an international community of VIU alumni. Just remember
that your success is our success; therefore, please keep in touch with us now and in the future.
Best of luck,
Kevin J. Martin

The Associate Director of the Student Affairs Department
Dear VIU Graduates,
We in the Student Affairs Department at VIU greatly appreciate the opportunity to have worked
alongside you all. We have enjoyed all of the activities and events that not only have you attended but
also frequently helped to organize and participated in. Our goal in the Student Affairs Department is to
ensure that students at VIU have the best overall experience here both in and out the classroom. We
hope that you all are able to take not only the knowledge gained from your courses but also the
knowledge and friendships gained here by interacting with such a diverse student body population.
Whether you attended events, helped planned them or participated in them, we acknowledge and
appreciate the impact that you had on VIU. May you take those skills and translate them into
inspirational accomplishments that better you as an individual, your community and even the world!
Sincerely,
What is New at VIU?
As you may know, VIU is expanding in many different angles to support its mission. VIU is in need of facility
improvement, and one of the upcoming project is the cafeteria. The Cafeteria will be the most important part
of VIU and is the next big thing for our community. VIU moved its headquarter to Village Drive building in
2014 and now is the time to have a state of the art dining experience inside the building. The Facilities and
Property Management Department has been developing this project since 2016, and our target date is to
have the grand opening by Fall semester 2017. The cafeteria will include an open kitchen with a number of
menu items from around the world for our international students and over 100 seats with nice banquet
seating, lounge TV area, and high bar tables equipped with power stations. The cafeteria will be the most
valuable area where our students, faculty, and staff can enjoy and relax whether during a break, lunch, or
free time. As a part the university growth, we are excited to have the VIU cafeteria in our building.
Another piece of exciting news is VIU’s infrastructure expansion. VIU has decided to expand the university by
having an additional floor. VIU has occupied the 1 st and 2 nd floor in the Village Drive building since 2014 and
would like to provide more space to its students and staff in 2017. The 3 rd floor is approximately 20,000 sq. ft.
which will have a huge impact on our university because it will increase the size of the university by about 33
percent. VIU now has more than 60,000 sq. ft. to support its vision and mission. The 3 rd floor includes office
spaces, a student center, and an enormous conference room equipped with a high quality sound system and
furniture. The conference room will have over 180 seats as well as a big lobby area for our events. VIU is
really looking forward to have this exciting project and occupying the 3 rd floor by March 1, 2017.
The beautiful park behind VIU’s parking lot is for our community. Students, faculty, and staff can use the park
from now on. VIU has signed an agreement with the Woodland (our neighbor) to share this space. VIU
reached out to them with the goal of providing the best benefit to our students. The Woodland believed in
and agreed to share the park. The park is more than 3 acres or more than 130,680 sq. ft. including paths,
seating, and a picnic area. VIU is thankful for their generosity. We are looking forward to have a nice weather
and enjoy the gorgeous park around the corner.
The Writing Center
and we were proud to work with many of you as you
brought your ideas to life through projects and
research. We are also so proud of those of you who
presented your work at the Academic Showcases in the
spring and fall semesters, captivating fellow students
and teachers alike with your creativity and pursuit of
knowledge. We hope you take all of your experiences
that you had at VIU and use them to make the world a
stronger, better, and more vibrant place to live.
Go forward!
Library Services
The Virginia International University Library wishes
you success on your future career paths. During
your studies, you learned how to find good
information resources. With these skills, you
earned a good grade on an assignment, furthered
your knowledge, and became a stronger candidate
to enter the professional world. Continue to apply
those skills in your career and never lose your
desire to pursue knowledge. Education is the best
provision for the journey to old age-Aristotle.
