High Quality Franchise
Brands You Can Afford
When you think of franchises, what brands come to mind? McDonald’s, The UPS Store,
Subway, Planet Fitness? These omnipresent franchises require a high investment, but thankfully
there are hundreds of concepts that cost far less to get started.
The 80 brands that made this year’s Top Low-Cost Franchises list (see page 6) all have a
minimum investment of under $100,000. To identify them, we looked at franchisee satisfaction
survey data from 13,000 franchisees representing 123 brands that we collected between October
2015 and April 2017. Only brands whose franchisees ranked them highly made the cut. Several
share their full franchise satisfaction survey results within the Franchise Reviews section of
FranchiseBusinessReview.com. The results reveal what franchisees think about areas that are
crucial to their brand’s success such as training and support, operations, franchisee-franchisor
relations, financial performance, and overall business satisfaction.
Starting your franchise research with franchisee approved brands, helps to increase your
chance of success. You’ll notice as you review the list of Top Low-Cost Franchises on page 6 of
this report, that there is one for every budget and interest.
HOW WE IDENTIFY THE TOP FRANCHISES
Participation in Franchise Business Review’s franchisee satisfaction
research is free for all North American franchise systems with a
minimum of 10 franchisees. For this report, we looked at franchisee
satisfaction survey data from 13,000 franchisees representing 123 brands
that we collected between October 2015 and April 2017. We asked each
franchisee to answer 33 benchmark questions ranking their franchise
in the areas of financial opportunity, training and support, leadership,
operations and product development, core values (e.g., honesty and integrity
of franchisor), general satisfaction, and the franchisee community.
We also asked them to answer an additional 16 questions about their
market area, demographics, business lifestyle, overall enjoyment running
their franchise, and role in the franchisee community. From this data, we
identified our list of top low-cost franchises with the highest franchisee
satisfaction. More detailed information about our research methodology
is available at FranchiseBusinessReview.com. Surveys to determine
the Top Franchises for 2018 are underway. If you are a franchisor
and would like to participate, please call 866-397-6680 or contact info@
A Look at the Top Brands and What it Takes to Be Successful
Launching any business is challenging and
peppered with risks. Half of small businesses
fail in the first four years according to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics.
There are two smart ways to help ensure
your dream of being your own boss doesn’t
turn into a nightmare. The first is to not
overstretch your budget and the second is to
consider franchising rather than launching a
business from scratch.
The 80 franchises that have high enough
franchisee satisfaction to make our 2017 Top
Low-Cost Franchises list (see page 6) have
minimum investment requirements ranging
from just over $3,000 to around $100,000.
These franchises offer the satisfaction of
running your own business, with the added
benefits of a proven business model as well as
ongoing support from fellow franchisees and
your franchisor. You’ll receive assistance with
marketing, technical help, sales, and more.
BENEFITS OF LOW-COST FRANCHISING
While low-cost franchises provide many of the
same advantages their pricier counterparts do,
they offer several additional ones including:
• Accessibility: Many franchises such as Dairy
Queen, Pearle Vision and Orangetheory
Fitness, require an initial investment of
hundreds of thousands of dollars. According
to FRANdata, there are currently 668 lowcost
franchise opportunities with minimum
Because it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to
invest in a low-cost franchise, some people
supplement their existing business with one.
“For the past 12 years I have owned a
successful special events company that deals
with destination events. I thought it was a
good move to invest in a second business
that complemented my core business and
offered me an easy product to promote,” says
Eddie Diaz with owns a Dream Vacations
franchise. “I looked at franchise models
because, quite honestly having gone through
the process of building my event company,
I didn’t want to start from scratch again.
I wanted to hit the ground running.” Dream
Vacations franchisees are home-based travel
professionals.
• Flexibility: Since it’s likely you won’t have
a brick-and-mortar location that requires
someone to be on-site, you will have flexibility
regarding your work hours.13% more
low-cost franchisees than all other franchisees
who participated in our research work
40 or fewer hours per week.
• Faster Profitability: Since low-cost franchises
typically are home-based businesses
and do not require a lot of staff, profitability
may be achieved more quickly. When asked
if their business is meeting their financial
expectations, 67% of low-cost franchisees vs.
60% of all other franchisees Franchise Business
Review surveyed said yes.
“One of the biggest advantages of
investing in a low-cost, home-based travel
franchise is that there is no overhead. There
is no inventory and you do not have to keep
a product in stock to sell because you are
selling dream vacations,” says Tim Courtney,
VP of Franchise Development for Dream
Vacations. “Another benefit is that because
the start-up cost is so low, you can more
quickly earn back your initial investment.”
95% of Dream Vacations franchisees work
from home.
• Scalability: If you aren’t buried in debt and
are making a good profit, you may well have
the funds needed to purchase additional
locations or territories. Based on our current
research, the average pre-tax income for
two of the most lucrative low-cost sectors
is $103,400 for Real Estate and $95,700 for
Business Services.
“Investing in a low-cost franchise is a
low-risk opportunity that will allow you
time for growth,” says Erin Patrick, Director
of Operations for Just Between Friends. “In
addition, you have the option and the ability
to purchase additional territories without
having to take out large loans and go into
debt that could take several years to pay
off.” Just Between Friends provides pop-up
consignment sales events that focus on child
and maternity items. 100% of its franchisees
work from home.
• Resilience: Since they typically do not to
require much overhead and staff, low-cost
franchises may fare better through challenging
economic times. This is especially true
if they provide non-optional services such
as senior and child care or automobile and
home maintenance.
• Remote Work Capabilities: The majority
of low-cost franchises are service businesses
that can be run out of a home office. Some
franchisees can run their business from anywhere,
including a beach while on a family
vacation, as long as there is Internet access.
WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING
IN A LOW-COST FRANCHISE
Prior to investing in any franchise, it’s essential
to analyze startup costs, market demand for
the product or service, franchise fees, potential
revenue, and contract provisions. Other
factors to consider while choosing a franchise
are if it fits your interests and skill set as well as
franchisee satisfaction, profitability, training
and support, fees, and the number of successful
franchises.
• Support: “The best thing about a franchise
model is that it offers start-up processes, sales
tools, back office, lead opportunities, marketing
components, suppliers, resources and
so much more for one price. I didn’t have
to re-invent the wheel,” says Eddie Diaz of
Dream Vacations. “My Dream Vacations
franchise provides me with confidence, peace
of mind, a committed corporate headquarters
team behind it, innovative software, stellar
support and simply a group of like-minded
individuals all working toward the same
goals. Their support, engagement, and commitment
are outstanding. All these are key in
selecting the right franchise opportunity.”
“Before you make the decision to join a
franchise, speak with your family and/or
support system. Tell them you’re considering
owning a business and ask them what their
thoughts are about you being a business
owner. Without the support of your support
system, it will be more challenging to
succeed,” says Chuck Bongiovanni, CEO and
Founder of CarePatrol Franchise Systems.
“Be ready to commit 100%! Owning a franchise
does not mean you are owed success,
you have to be ready to earn it.” CarePatrol
helps seniors and their families in selecting
and transitioning into assisted-living and
independent-living homes, nursing homes,
and Dementia and Alzheimer’s memory care
facilities. About 90% of its franchisees work
from home.
• Culture: “Make sure the culture of the franchising
company aligns with your values and
lifestyle. Also research the level of ongoing
support provided by the franchisor,” says
Tom Hofacre, Creative Director at Town
Money Saver. “In addition, evaluate your
skills to make sure you’re able to succeed in
the industry in which the franchise operates.”
Town Money Saver is a monthly direct-mail
advertising flyer distributed to homes and
businesses.
Cruise Planners,
An American Express
Travel Representative
Rahway, N.J.
Franchisee since Dec. 2009
What is it that you like best about owning your
franchise? Being in control of my own success.
I can work from anywhere at anytime.
How is it that you entered franchising? After
losing my job of nine years due to its being
outsourced, I wanted to create my own personal
destiny working in an industry that would give
me joy. I always had a passion for travel, so
when I researched Cruise Planners, knew it was a
perfect fit for me.
What have you found particularly beneficial
about being a franchisee. I didn’t have to over
think how to get my business of the ground or
worry about start-up costs. Cruise Planners is a
business in a box. My only job was and is to sell
because Cruise Planners simplified getting my
business off the ground with accounting, setting
it up, and handling marketing. I enjoy feeling part
of a business “family” the members of which,
my franchisor and fellow franchisees, help each
other succeed. My coach receives my calls and
always helps me come to the best decision for
my business and me. My peers provide guidance
and support.
What advice do you have when it comes
to achieving success as a Cruise Planners
franchisee? Plan your schedule around your
clients. My clients do not normally book a
vacation during normal business hours, so
I am available after 5pm and on weekends.
You have to be able to pick up a phone and build
a relationship. People have to know who you are,
trust you, and just plain like you for them to give
you a credit card number.
• Competitive Advantage: “Look for a franchise
that offers a business model that is
so remarkable that local competitors can’t
compete,” says Ron Holt, CEO and Founder
of Two Maids and A Mop. “In addition to
identifying a proven business model that
offers a unique selling proposition, look
for an internal infrastructure that provides
top-notch support and a profitable business
plan that will enable you to achieve a healthy
bottom line. Finding a franchise opportunity
that meets each of these three characteristics
will help ensure long-term success.” Two
Maids and A Mop offers both an owneroperator
and a semi-absentee owner investment
model. Its owner-operators work from
their respective offices, while its semi-absentee
franchise owners work from their homes.
• Franchisee Satisfaction: The overall attitude
and satisfaction of current franchisees is one
of the most critical factors to consider prior
to investing in any franchise. It’s important
to speak with a variety of franchisees—single
How to Effectively Run
Your Franchise From Home
Many low-cost franchises can be run out of a home office. To help you avoid the
potential pitfalls of doing so, we asked those who have done so successfully to
share what works for them.
“Working from home sounds so glorious, but it’s hard! It takes a lot of discipline
to walk past a full basket of laundry, just get your cup of coffee, and return to
your desk. I’m an incredible multi-tasker by nature, but when I am working ...
I am working. I don’t get sidetracked by things like household chores.”
— Deborah Freeman, Just Between Friends franchisee.
“Create a designated workspace that you call your office and treat each moment
in it as if you were going to a normal place of business. Even though you are at
home, dress the part, pretend the world is seeing you. Productivity comes from
creating patterns and systems. Have an in time and out time. Dedicate time to
return calls and tackle task lists.”
— Eddie Diaz, Dream Vacations franchisee.
“Be religious about starting your day as if you were reporting to a regular job.
Clock into your own business.”
— Butch Brown, Town Money Saver franchisee.
unit and multiunit owners, those who have
been in business for years and are just starting
out etc.—to hear first hand what their
experience has been. If you notice rumblings
regarding dissatisfaction in a particular area,
ask the franchisees you are speaking with
about it to see if it is an isolated event or
something the majority of franchisees are
experiencing.
We encourage all franchise companies
to survey their franchisees annually, and
to share their survey results with franchisee
candidates. An independent satisfaction
report, like the ones available on www.
FranchiseBusinessReview.com, can help you
start to learn what franchisees think about the
areas crucial to a franchise system’s health
including training and support, operations,
franchisee-franchisor relations, financial performance,
and overall business satisfaction.
• The Franchisor’s and Your Own Financial
Well Being: “Look at the Item 19 in the
Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD)
and have your attorney or representative
review the FDD as well,” says Patrick of Just
Between Friends. “It’s a good idea to develop
a business plan so you have a starting point
and know the goals you are striving to reach.
If you need financing, research and know
what your options are for obtaining funding.”
• Is It a Good Fit: “Ensure the franchise is a
good fit for you from both a personal and
business perspective. Many folks just focus
on the business aspects and assume the personal
satisfaction will come if the finances
are there,” says Laura Coe, President of
Snapology. “I find that if you are passionate
about what the business offers, then your
chances of success are infinitely improved.
“It’s important to love what you do!” 92% of
Snapology’s franchisees, who teach robotics
HOW TO FUND YOUR
LOW-COST FRANCHISE
Many entrepreneurs fund their low-cost franchise
investment with cash, credit cards, or
loans from family and friends. Additional
funding sources include the Small Business
Administration, 401(k) business financing,
unsecured loans, and portfolio loans. To learn
about each option and which would be the
best fit for you, visit the Franchise Financing
Dale Carnegie
DBA name: Siebert
Madison, WI
Franchisees since 1996
What do you enjoy most about your job? Our
ability to make a meaningful, measurable, and
positive impact on the professional growth
of individuals and their companies. Using the
coaching techniques of Dale Carnegie literally
can transform people and the organizations they
work for. We are “Business Partners for Bottom
Line Results” with our cherished clients.
Prior to purchasing your Dale Carnegie
franchise, you managed it. Why did you decide
to invest in it? Having operated the territory as
a manager since 1989, we had a very solid idea
of what it took to succeed as a Dale Carnegie
franchisee and were already very familiar with
the brand’s senior leadership. The transition from
manager to franchisee was almost seamless.
What is your advice for a prospective franchise
buyer? It’s important to have a passion for the
business you are buying. There will definitely
some long days and nights. Without the real
desire to make the business successful, it could
become difficult. Also, have a solid sense of what
it takes to run your own business and work in a
business–to-business environment. Without my
previous business background, this would have
been much more of a challenge.
What work experience has helped you be
successful as a Dale Carnegie franchisee? Terry
was in the hospitality business. In addition to
being a successful restaurant operator, he was
responsible for all real estate and marketing
activities for a regional restaurant company. He
had his own advertising agency for about five
years before joining Dale Carnegie on a full-time
basis and had already been instructing Dale
Carnegie courses. Kathy’s nursing background
was a natural transition for her to help and build
people from another perspective.
EXPERT CORNER
5 Tips From Successful Low-Cost Franchisees
We thought you would appreciate hearing fast track to success advice from seasoned franchisees
who are succeeding in low-cost franchising, so asked them to share their thoughts with you.
1. Persevere
“Persevere! Running a franchise has unique challenges through
the good times and the bad times. As a new owner, you
will need to become an expert at everything until you find
a qualified person to take on tasks for you. To remain on
top of your game, it’s important to understand all parts
of the business even if it’s not your job anymore to do them.
Thinking quickly on your feet and problem solving under
stress are keys in running a successful franchise. All the while
you need to maintain a smile on your face. My best
analogy is that a franchise owner is like a duck—
calm and cool looking on the top, but
paddling her booty off under the water!”
— Deborah Freeman has been a Just Between
Friends top performing franchisee since 2011.
4. Ask Questions
“Begin with the desire to succeed and remind yourself of
why you are doing this. The why is what keeps things moving
forward when the going gets tough. Passion, commitment,
and a willingness to learn are all keys to success. It is also
very important to ask questions and ask again. Ensure you
have the right answers and you feel 100% comfortable with
the business. Don’t hold back. Ask other franchise owners
for advice. Successful and confident people are always willing
to share. Lastly, have patience. Nothing is built overnight.
Greatness takes time and dedication.”
— Eddie Diaz is a Dream Vacations franchisee
whose business acumen was recognized by
his making Orlando Business Journal’s
“40 Under 40” list.
2. Have Patience
“Don’t think that just by buying a franchise, you will be
an overnight success. Two Maids & A Mop offered me
an opportunity to use their successful blue prints, systems,
and support. However, I am the one supplying the blood,
sweat, and tears on a daily basis. In a small business,
choosing the right staff can definitely help or hurt your
initial momentum. I was lucky! I had two tremendous
employees from my last company who agreed
to join in the new adventure. Use what the
franchise offers. Two Maids provides many
supporting options such as accounting,
payroll, and insurance.”
— Anthony Truong owns a Two Maids & A Mop
franchise and received the brand’s 2017 Fastest
Growing Award even though his business is just
under two-years-old.
3. Have Passion
“I think that the key to franchising is to find something you can
truly be passionate about. You need to believe in the purpose
of your business. I am convinced that bringing programs that
teach Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
to children in a fun way can be inspirational
and motivating for them later in life when
it comes to careers in these fields.”
— Alejandru Cantu owns a Snapology franchise
that has been a Snapology Top Performing
franchise for five consecutive quarters.
5. Be All In
“Make sure you are all in. People who have one foot in and
one foot out of their business, will perform to that standard.
This has to be your life and livelihood. It takes serious
commitment to build and grow a business. I have never met
anyone who is successful who didn’t give 100% and pour
their blood, sweat, and tears into it. A 40 hour work week
is for amateurs. Are you willing and able to work 70 hours a
week seven days a week? Are you willing to sacrifice family
time? Are you willing to take every penny you have to build
and grow a business? Are you willing to get up each morning
and do tasks that do not come naturally to you? Because
this is what it will take to be successful. The hardest part of
any job is doing something you don’t know and/or may not
understand and be asked to get up and do it over and over
again. I would say get your arms around the business, all of it,
so you know and understand everything that has to be done.
From there, your first hire should be a hire to your weakness.
For example, if you’re not a salesperson, hire a salesperson.
You either have to put in the work or have
enough money to hire someone to do it.
Remember, no one will work on or in
your business as hard as you will.“
— Wendy Rickenbach was recognized
by CarePatrol as a Top 20 Producer
in 2016 and 2015.
HOW TO KNOW IF THE FRANCHISE
CONCEPT YOU ARE CONSIDERING
IS A GOOD ONE
Whether you are investing in a franchise
because you want to transition from being an
employee, a stay-at-home parent, or retiree to
becoming a business owner, doing so takes
a considerable amount of thought and planning.
The most important thing is to ensure
the business is viable. The brands on this year’s
Top Low-Cost Franchises list (see page 6) are
there due to the positive franchisee satisfaction
survey feedback their franchisees provided.
There is no better validation of a franchise
concept than franchisees who invested in it
being happy they did so.
There is no doubt that if you invest in a
quality low-cost franchise that it can help
you obtain your personal and financial goals.
Of the 13,000 franchisees we surveyed, 90%
say they enjoy operating their business and
87% are satisfied overall with their low-cost
franchisor and the business opportunity provided.
Several of the brands featured on the list
share their full franchisee satisfaction survey
results within the Franchise Reviews section of
www.FranchiseBusinessReview.com.
“My Town Money Saver franchise has
given me the opportunity to spend quality
time with my family, have a flexible schedule,
and the financial independence to not have to
worry about money,” says Town Money Saver
franchisee, Butch Brown. Brown was Franchisee
of the Year for the Central/Southern Ohio
& Kentucky region and was awarded the Blane
Drake Award in recognition for his selfless
service to others.
“I came into CarePatrol with the mindset
that I wanted to build and grow a business.
My livelihood depended on making it work.
I had two kids I was responsible for. Failing
was not an option,” says CarePatrol franchisee,
Wendy Rickenbach. “I am fortunate that in
the three years I have been with CarePatrol,
my financial opportunity is far more than
I ever expected and I have not even reached
the peak. I intend to hire more people, touch
more lives, keep more seniors safe, and keep
giving back financially to non-profits who help
low income seniors I can’t help individually.”
Craig Burton
Fibrenew
Austin, TX
Franchisee since Sept. 2011
FEATURED
Franchisee
Why did you enter franchising? After having
three jobs in five years, it was evident that
stability, security, and loyalty were no longer
guaranteed. I also didn’t feel that what I was
doing was making any material difference.
I wanted to find a career that provided stability,
was satisfying, and would make me luckier the
harder I worked. I felt franchising would enable
me to do so.
Why did you select the franchise you did?
The single most important thing in my life is my
family, my wife and two girls. I wanted a business
relationship that would fit with what my family
has established as important including time
commitment, availability, and financial reward.
Fibrenew fits all this, so was a pretty attractive
package.
What are the benefits of owning a franchise?
I knew I had invested in an established concept
that works. Fibrenew has a method of doing
things, not just with training, but on the products
and support side, that is successful. I was
provided with a pre-built set of tools for almost
everything I needed to get my business ramped
up quickly. In addition to the support I receive
from the Head Office, I can phone any franchisee
for advice or help. The ongoing seminars and
workshops that Fibrenew offers enable me to
stay sharp in my field and to continually learn
new skills.
Are you happy you invested in a franchise?
Yes. From a business perspective, it’s pretty
amazing to think that there is hardly anyone out
there who doesn’t need our leather, vinyl, and
plastic restoration services at some point. From
a personal perspective, more flexibility in my
schedule and my family’s schedule means a lot.
