Club History
Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, or
Royals as it is affectionately
known, was founded in May 1853
as the Port Phillip Yacht
Club. Records show that the Club
is undoubtedly Australia's senior
yacht club and as such is steeped
in decades of yachting history and
tradition.
In 1872, the Club was granted the
privilege of flying the Blue Ensign
of the Colony of Victoria. Queen
Victoria, in 1887, granted to the
Club the privileges of a royal club
and the Admiralty granted a Full
Warrant to fly the Blue Ensign of
Her Majesty's Fleet. Since 1887 it
has been known as Royal Yacht
Club of Victoria .
In 1873, the Club moved to its
present site at 120 Nelson
Place, Williamstown, just
across the Westgate Bridge, on
the shores of the picturesque
Port Phillip. Royal Yacht Club
of Victoria has more than 800
members and 300 yachts on its
register. The Club has a long
and proud history of bay and
ocean racing, as well as long
distance cruising.
Many past members of the
Club are linked with the
development of yachting in
Victoria.

The Club is very proud of its Royals Training Centre (RTC) which is the
epi-centre of our Club from sailing to volunteer training. All ages are
accommodated for from seven years. RTC has both male and female
instructors.
RTC runs courses regularly throughout the year and advertises mainly
through the web site and E-News.

Youth Sailing
(7-17 year olds)
Children seven years old and upwards
go into a TACKERS program which is
kidcentric and designed to keep the
young ones entertained yet motivated to
learn about sailing. This program is open
to both members and non members who
have no prior sailing experience or want
to refresh on skills before they enter the
members CADET program.
Once they have gone through the
TACKERS program, most children have
become RYCV members and progress to
the Club racing program which is the
start of their racing career. There is a
great team within this age group of
members and annual Presentation Night
really highlights their achievements.
Adult Sailing
Adult and never sailed before but want to learn?
Royals Training Centre (RTC) can help you get started with beginner
programs that teach the theory and practical side of sailing. RTC has both
dinghy and keelboats to learn to sail in.

You never stop learning at our Club so Royals Training Centre has
programs to suit you. Take a look….

Club Sailing
Cadets
When Juniors join as members, they can enter at Cadet level if
they have prior sailing experience. International Cadets is our
junior members racing class. The Club hosts an annual
Presentation Night and supports travel to other clubs and
interstate to compete in State and National championships. In
the recent World Championships, six of the first ten boats were
Australian entries. The Cadet class is considered an excellent
pathway to start a sailing career.

Women’s Sailing
The Women’s Division at the Club is
fast gaining recognition around the Bay.

ladies from the 2010 Women’s Keelboat
Regatta.
The women meet regularly and Royals
welcomes new female members
whether you sail or not. Your support is
always welcome at their events. The Women’s Elliott Regatta, every
September, is another date on the sailing calendar that is gathering
momentum in registrations and skill level. Many of our female sailors
use the Winter to improve their racing skills through the Royal
Training Centre.
Club Racing and Cruising
Match racing is developing into a major feature of the Club's sailing
program with over 300 starts in the past 12 months. It can be enjoyed
by crews at all levels and it is the best way to hone your boat handling
skills. Royal Yacht Club of Victoria also has a fleet of six Elliott 5.9
ideal for training and match racing. The Elliotts are 5.9m long, fast,
exciting and a highly manoeuverable keelboat for a skipper and two
member crew.
Royal Yacht Club of Victoria also has a Cruising Group and organises
trips each month for members to enjoy sailing together. These are
very social events where members share stories about their trips and
enjoy getting together for lunch or dinner.

Reciprocal Clubs
Royals has established and maintains reciprocal rights around the globe. It’s a great
exclusive benefit of your RYCV membership. We are continually adding more Clubs.
Many members find this useful when travelling abroad, there is nothing like a warm
welcome in a foreign country. And you don’t have to go abroad to enjoy the hospitality
of other Clubs, there are plenty here in Australia. The following Clubs have afforded
us full reciprocal rights for 2017-18 season.
Accessing the Reciprocal Clubs
In most cases unless stated below, please contact the club well before you depart to
confirm availability of moorings, accommodation and facility usage. You will need to
show your current RYCV membership card and a letter of introduction. Please contact
the RYCV office to obtain necessary documentation. Please note, not all clubs have
accommodation or moorings available.

Membership Benefits
Bar
Members receive a discount all year round by showing their
membership card.
Barbecue Area
The barbecue area is available for all members and their guests.
Club Merchandise
RYCV has a great range of clothing gear with Club logo. The
Club also stocks merchandise including glasses and badges for
purchase. Members receive a discount on all Club merchandise.
Free internet access
There is internet access in the bar or use your own laptop and
gain free remote internet access. The RYCV office can set up an
account for you.
Functions
Members can use the Club’s function facilities for their own
events and receive member discounts. You will receive free
room hire if you are a Senior member.

Regular Club communication
One high end RYCV Year book, weekly E-News, vital mail outs and friendly
office staff to assist with inquiries.
Club Boat Hire
Great deals on hiring out Club boats such as Pacers and Elliotts.
Yard and Marina
Members receive discounts for yard and marina services and of course given
priority over external users.
Dining
With a stunning back drop , the restaurant offers a quality dining experience
with an a-la-carte menu including daily specials. The Club will be running
barbecues and special dinner theme nights as part of its dining options so
keep an eye out for dates. Snack meals are available and ordered at the bar.
On sailing days, the bar can organize rolls for you and your crew.
Library
Membership grants you access and borrowing rights to the Club library.
Car Park
Senior members have access to the car park. RYCV is one of the very few
metropolitan based yacht clubs that can provide such a privilege to its Senior
members.
Training
Member discounts are available on some courses we offer through Royals
Training Centre, which regularly holds programs to develop member’s skills.

Member services and facilities
Members have access to a wealth of quality services and facilities at great rates.
Yard and Marina
Yard and Marina can help with boat maintenance and
slipping. Dedicated full time staff manage this area. The yard
has a travel lift with a 28,000kg capacity. An extensive range
of marine services is also available.

The Club's marina is conveniently located close to both the Club House and
Members' car park. It can accommodate over 170 vessels up to 25 metres in
length. All berths have access to power and water. Also available, for your
convenience, are fuel, locker storage and courtesy trolleys. Showers and
bathrooms are available at the Club House (24 hour access with Member's card),
ice, take away food and beverages.

conference, engagement or a celebration of any kind, please contact Function
Coordinator at the Club on 03 9397 1277 to discuss our superb catering and
beverage options.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don’t know anyone at the Club to nominate or
propose my application? . That’s easy, just contact us and
arrange to come down to the Club when the bar and dining
room is open. One of our members will be more than happy
to show you around and make introductions. Check out
crewing opportunities on our webpage too.
How is the membership year calculated? 1st June –31st
May. Membership is calculated pro-rata from when you join.
Everyone is on the same renewal period.
Can I bring guests in as a member? We welcome members’
guests. There are limitations to the number of visits per
year.
My child will be the member, can I come down too? It’s
great to see you support your child’s sailing interest. We
would be happy for you to use our clubhouse facilities,
however you will not be able to sign guests in.
I cannot attend my membership interview. Let us know as
we will arrange a more suitable time.

FAQ’s continued
Can I utilize the club while my membership is being processed? Yes certainly
however you will not able to charge to your member’s account.
I don’t sail but like your clubhouse facilities, what membership category suits
me? Associate Membership is for our land lovers. However you do not have
voting rights and cannot sail.
Is there a wait list for your marina berth? Yes but we try to cater for everyone
and we have hard stand space available. It is impossible to say how long the
marina berth wait is so please call our Operations Director to have a chat if you
are bringing a boat with you.
I want to join, what happens next?
1. Fill in both Application and Nomination forms (get signatures too)
Nominator/ Proposer must be a Life, Honorary Life, Senior, Sailing or
Family Member of at least two years’ standing.
1. Email or hand in the 2 forms to the office to Amelia Martin,
ameliam@rycv.asn.au
2. You and proposer are invited to an interview. (2nd Monday or Wednesday
each month)
3. Your application is approved for nomination. Nomination form goes on bar
notice board for 14 days. If no objections then you receive a letter officially
welcoming you to the club
4. Your membership, card and Yachting Association fees are billed to you,
and your membership card is handed to you once fees have been paid.
The whole process takes approximately one calendar month
