Picnic in the Park 

returns 8th July 

Picnic in the Park is a family music and 

food festival, which takes place every July 

in Pattishall near Towcester (NN12 8NN). 

A community voluntary organisation runs 

this event with an aim to raise money for 

local projects. 

Set in the lush greenery of the Parish’s 

playing field, the fully fenced kid’s safe 

area has become a firm calendar event for 

families from Pattishall and surrounding 

areas. 

The event has grown year on year, and now 

in the fourth year, this music festival is the 

largest single venue event in the Towcester 

area. Up to 1500 people enjoy a relaxed 

day of live music, family entertainment, real 

ale and great food. 


Picnic in the Park is organised by Pattishall Park Events, a voluntary community 

organisation. This programme has been compiled by Pattishall Park Events to

As the name suggests, the event is a giant 

picnic. Festival-goers are welcome to bring 

their hampers, picnic rugs and gazebos and 

settle in for the day. What could be better 

than relaxing in the sun, enjoying live music 

on the main stage, and if you have children, 

knowing that they are safe and entertained 

for the day? 

This year Kids go free! 

Yes, it costs nothing to bring kids along to 

Picnic in the Park (of course they need to 

be accompanied by a suitable adult). There 

are lots for them to do, Pattishall playing 

fields boasts an impressive array of park 

play equipment which keeps them active 

for most of the day, but there is much more 

going on. Read about what the kids will be 

up to in the Kids Zone section featured on 

page 17 of this programme. 

Live music has always provided the 

backbone of this event and this year is 

no exception. Seven main stage acts and 

a professional DJ will keep the crowds 

entertained throughout the day and into the 

evening. Read about the eclectic mix of the 

music at Picnic in the Park on page 6, and 

check out the biographies for each band 

featured throughout this programme. 

Great food and drink have always been 

high on the agenda when organising Picnic 

in the Park. This year we are pleased to 

see the return of Gun Dog Ales, wood fired 

pizzas, the artisan sausage and burger 

BBQ and great Indian finger food delights. 

A feature on page 10 provides a complete 

rundown of the food and drink available at 

Picnic in the Park this year.

Festival Information 

The mission of Picnic in 

the Park 

Picnic in the Park is a fantastic music event 

staged for the people of Pattishall and 

surrounding areas to enjoy. 

This year we have established a new 

Voluntary Community Organisation 

dedicated to run and grow this event raising 

money for local causes. To date, we have 

raised over 16% of our initial £50K goal 

for the resurfacing of the car park at the 

village hall (our first local benefactor from 

our fundraising). Picnic in the Park 2017 

aims to increase this total and identify other 

local causes which we could support in the 

future. 

We would like to give a special mention to 

Unusual Rigging who have kindly supported 

the erection of the stage since the event’s 

inception, Jewson Northampton for being 

the primary event sponsor again this year, 

and TBS builders merchants for being our 

programme sponsor, thank you so much for 

your support. 

We have also received ongoing support 

and sponsorship from numerous other 

local companies which feature in this 

programme without whom the event would 

not be possible. Financial support has been 

gratefully received from Pattishall Parish 

Council, South Northamptonshire Council

What’s new this year 

Picnic in the Park 2017 looks set to be the biggest and best event yet, and this year we 

have implemented a few changes. 

• On the main stage, we have a DJ Richard Stewart playing sets in between the seven 

main stage bands running throughout the afternoon and evening. 

• We’ve added an Acoustic Hall where informal breakout sets will be played in the 

evening (see page 6 for more info on the music at Picnic in the Park). 

• And we’ve even added a cheeky after show party 

for those who want to wind down (or dance the 

night away) after the finale from The Whatevers 

Party Band at 10:45 pm. 

• For the kids, we’ve added a Family Circus 

workshop, and of course, the mighty DJ Terry will 

return for the Kids disco in the evening (see page 

17 for information on the Kids Zone). 

• We’ve got great food and drink again this year. 

Gun Dog Ales return with the range of award 

winning beers, Johnny’s Artisan Sausages are 

back by popular demand, and wood-fired pizzas 

will be available all day . 

• We’ve also added an evening only ticket for 

admission after 6:30 pm. 

Craft stalls at the festival 

Fancy a break from the music and want 

to stretch your legs? Come into the hall 

during the afternoon and have a stroll 

around lots of stalls selling a wide variety 

of hand crafted items sold by the crafters 

themselves. Have a chat about the skills 

they employ to make these beautiful items 

that are on sale. They will be delighted to 

talk to you. 

The wide range of goodies on sale include 

jewellery, folded paper flowers, indoor 

and outdoor wooden items, pottery (Owl 

Studio), kids knits, kids books, handbags, 

scarves, candles, scents, sweet treats, 

fabric creations, jams, chutneys, and so 

much more. We also have Adrian Perkins, 

the Ghost Detective, selling his series of 

books, CDs, etc. He will be delighted to 

tell you tales of his ghostly exploits and 

adventures. 



So come and do a little shopping for those 

birthdays that are just around the corner, 

and, of course, you can always treat 

yourself. You know you deserve it! So pop 

into the Large Hall and be amazed by these 

“crafty” people. The Craft Fair is open from

We only went and did it… two headline acts! 

Every year we endeavour to put on better 

bands and more of what you have loved 

since the first Picnic in the Park. We are 

thrilled to have The Whatevers Party Band 

returning as the headline act AND, 

Just Nuisance – the PITP 2015 

headliners, are also back. The 

excellent Jordan Herbert will 

open the show with a mix of 

originals and covers.

The always-popular Pinkers Spinney 

ceilidh band will get everyone dancing in 

the afternoon, because, you just can’t help 

yourself. You really can’t. Rumours are also 

Band Profile: Jordon Herbert 

Jordan Herbert is an up and coming singer/ 

songwriter from Northampton. In 2016, 

Jordan’s debut EP “Roots” reached number 

6 in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts, 

joining the likes of Ed Sheeran and James 

Bay. Throughout the rest of 

the year, Jordan and his 5 

piece band, toured around the 

country playing at legendary 

venues such as The Bedford, 

Balham and The Fiddlers 

Elbow, Camden. Jordan has 

also supported Scouting For 

Girls at Bugjam 2016. 

This year Jordan will release 

the follow up EP to “Roots” 

titled “Just Recently”. The 

lead single (also titled “Just 

Recently”) has been receiving 

worldwide radio plays and 

positive reception. The EP

and local band, The Night Howlers will bring 

some classic rock to usher in the evening.

Band Profile: The Whatevers Party Band 

The Whatevers party band made their 

Picnic in the Park debut at last year. They 

did a great job and were so popular with 

the audience we are delighted that they are 

back to headline and close the show again 

this year. 

They are a modern female fronted 5 piece 

band playing modern, classic pop and rock. 

The band members are Sarah - Vocals, 

Davroz - Guitar, Gaz - Keys, Steve - Bass, 

Pete – Drums, and they are home grown in 

Northamptonshire. They are guaranteed to 

get you rocking the night away. 

The band formed in early 2011 and it was 

agreed that their mission would be to bring 

modern and classic songs missing from 

the local pub covers scene. The individual 

members behind The Whatevers have 

been active in the UK live music scene for 

several years and have played with many 

top acts around the world. 

The Whatevers play with fantastic and 

talented musicianship, and a powerful, 

world class female singer. They are 

constantly in demand and we are thrilled to 

have them bringing our day to a high octane

CAFÉ – as last year the café will be 

serving tea, coffee, and a variety of 

scrumptious cakes throughout the event. 

THE WOOD OVEN - Mobile Wood Fired 

Pizza 

Mobile pizza van brings great tasting 

freshly made wood fired pizzas to 

Northamptonshire. Pizza fans in the 

Towcester area have been enjoying the 

delights of a new mobile wood fired pizza 

van thanks to a local couple. Michelle 

Barber and Chris Newman recently set 

up The Wood Oven following a chat with 

friends over a couple of beers down the 

local. After practicing in a pizza oven, 

which Chris built in their garden, the two 

flew off to Italy to learn the secrets of the 

trade. 

A proposal of marriage later - she said yes 

over pizza, of course - and the pair are 

now serving up pizzas every week night to 

various locations around Northamptonshire 

including Silverstone, Towcester, Syresham 

and Greens Norton. 

The secret, the duo tell us, is that the 

freshly made pizzas are cooked in the van’s 

specialist ‘Dragon Oven’ fired by wood and 

reaching temperatures up to 500°c. Buon 

Appetito. 

JOHNNY’S ARTISAN SAUSAGE AND 

BURGER COMPANY 

We are delighted to have Johnny’s special 

sausages again, plus this year, burgers too. 

They will be a great addition to the variety 

of hot food available. 

Johnny had always wanted to have a go at 

making his own sausages having watched 

his hero, the late Keith Floyd, making it all 

look so easy on TV. Allie, Johnny’s wife, 

made it all possible when she gave him a 

sausage maker for his 40th birthday. And 

the rest, as they say, is history. 

When making large quantities Gilling the 

Butchers from Daventry supply Johnny with 

double minced pork from the best cuts, 

ready for Johnny to do the rest. Johnny’s 

artisan sausages are high meat, low fat, 

and cook exceptionally well on the BBQ. 

With the addition of burgers it is gonna be a 

tough choice!

THE INDIAN ORCHARD 

This family business based in MK will be 

offering a selection of traditional Gujarati 

curries with rice, poppadoms and savoury 

snacks, as well as their speciality Indian 

pickles and chutneys. All the products are 

suitable for vegetarians and vegans (most 

are also wheat free). The Gujarati region is 

famous for the rich flavour of its food.

Sarah and James and their microbrewery,

Just Nuisance is an established 5-piece 

rock covers band based in the Milton 

Keynes area. Their style is 

contemporary and classic

members still on board,

The band take their name from a very 

special dog. Just Nuisance 

was the first and only dog 

to be officially enlisted into 

the Royal Navy during 

Wold War 2. A Great Dane, 

Nuisance was a stray who 

was adopted by sailors 

based at Simonstown, near 

Cape Town. He became a 

trusted friend of the sailors 

and accompanied them on 

their trips into the town’s 

bars enjoying a beer. He was 

also known to have had a 

particular dislike of officers 

and paid little attention 

to rules and regulations 

on the base. Today Just 

Nuisance has a statue on the promenade in 

Simonstown, SA.

KIDS ZONE 

Happy kid equals happy parents 

Picnic in the Park is as much for children 

as it is for adults, it’s a family music festival 

which provides a rich and varied day of 

entertainment for all ages. 

We want kids to create great memories on 

the day, so they can look back and smile 

recalling the fun times they had at Picnic in 

the Park. 

Pattishall playing field boasts a busy park 

full of great outdoor play equipment which 

becomes the children’s base for the day. 

It hosts swings, climbing frames and even 

a zip wire to keep them stimulated (and 

tire them out). The Festival Arena is fully 

fenced, and staff control the gates, so kids 

don’t get out! 

This year we are excited to welcome The 

Party Family Circus Workshop to the 

festival, they will be entertaining children 

during the afternoon demonstrating and 

teaching circus skills. On the day direct 

your kids to their tepee where kids can 

have fun learning to juggle, spin plates, 

clowning skills, and more allowing you time 

to enjoy the live bands on stage (or sample 

the excellent food and drink). 

In the evening the kids have their disco, DJ 

‘Terry’ will be back, dubbed as the modern 

day Pied Piper, he led the children with a 

surprise flash mob performance last year 

which took everyone by surprise. Rumours 

are that this year his ‘on stage’ routine is 

going to be bigger and better! (watch this 

space). 

We’ve also got some firm favourites; 

bouncy castle, hammer games, candy floss 

and sweet stalls. Remind your children 

to save their pocket money in the weeks 

leading up to Picnic in the Park to keep 

the change from disappearing out of your 

pocket!

Band Profiles 

The Goat Roper Rodeo Band 

The Goat Roper Rodeo Band played at the very first 

Picnic in the Park back in 2014; we are delighted to 

welcome them back to our stage. The Goat Roper 

Rodeo Band are all about country music with a 

difference. They do it with just an upright bass, 

two old guitars and great harmony. The Band sing 

Country Blues like you have never heard. It’s up, 

down, soft, loud, and full of love and pain like all 

great country music. There is a hint of Gram, a sniff 

of Dylan and twist of Waylon’s blues. They look 

great, sound great and have a bunch of absolutely 

brilliant songs. Check out their Facebook page for

Pinkers Spinney 

Pinkers Spinney are a barn dance and ceilidh 

(pronounced kaylee) band. Irene is the caller 

and her expert guidance is all you need to be 

confident getting up to have a go at barn dancing. 

The band is made up of fiddle, mandolin, guitar, 

and bass. Dancing bridges the generation gap, 

brings everyone together and turns any event into 

a really fun social party. The 5 piece band are 

based in Milton Keynes and Ian, Arun, Johnny and 

Keith are looking forward to providing Picnic in the 

Park 2017 with foot tapping music that is perfect to 

get you dancing. No previous dance experience

Daventry Community Choir 

The choir began in September 2016 and is led by 

DSLV School’s own music teacher Rachel Hopkins. 

Every Thursday evening at the school they take a 

musical journey from the 1960s to the present day 

in their practice sessions. 

In December 2016 the Choir gave a great 

performance at Daventry’s Christmas lantern 

parade. For details of their upcoming performances,

Jewson Northampton is delighted to be the 

main sponsor of Picnic In The Park for the 

second year running. 

The event is a fantastic community event,

organise it throughout the year and also

Band Profile 

Band Profile: Night Howlers 

The Night Howlers are a four piece Rock 

‘n’ Roll covers band from in and around 

Northampton. They formed at a one off 

Spinal Tap world tour concert in 2015 and 

have been raised on a diet of Hard Rock 

and Pop music. The band creates a classic 

rock sound with a modern edge which 

lasts in the memory of its crowds long after 

hearing them. 

The NIght Howlers are - Tom Nightingale, 

Chris Hardwick, Jon Martin and Wes 

Manning. We are excited to have them 

performing at Picnic in the Park this year. 

The band play tracks from such legends 

as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Blur and even 

underground groups like The Beatles and 

The Stones. The Night Howlers will have 

you on your feet dancing to the hits of the 

greats come rain or shine.
