Dio(R)evolution
Chiuri has frequently relied upon her
daughter, Rachelle, as inspiration and
often asking for her opinion on each collection
before showing it to anyone else.
Speaking to Vogue back in November,
Maria says “Of course she is my muse. I
think she keeps me young, honestly. My
children have a different point of view—
they pose you new questions, and you
have to find new answers.”
Rachelle also says of her mother; “I’m
very proud of what she does. She’s such a
great example and inspiration to me—as
a woman with a career, and as a mother.
Every woman should have the right to do
both, and I’m so grateful to my mum for
teaching me that.”
Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s first
female Creative Director, was
hired in July 2016. She wowed
the Fashion world with her debut Spring
2017 Ready-to-Wear collection with
her mix of delicate, feminine features
with strong and masculine.
‘We should all be feminists’ stamped on
a simple white tee with a navy embellished
tulle skirt became one of the most
instragrammed outfits of Fashion Week.
‘Dio(R)evolution’ was another well remembered
phrase from the show, becoming
very clear that celebrating the
power of women is how she is choosing
to embrace her new position.
I really admire the image overhaul Dior
has gone through over the past year. It
reflects the era we now live in; an era
where age and gender are no grounds
for limitation. It is clear that when it comes
to inspiration, Maria looks to her daughter
for her awareness and judgement on
what it is to be youthful and ‘cool’. This is
something that I believe to be compelling,
and a very honest thing to admit to. It is
so often deemed that successful designers
or creatives of any kind have all the
answers; they are put on a pedestal and
know exactly what it is to be on trend
and one step ahead. It is refreshing to
hear that someone who has worked in the
business as a Creative Director for over
25 years, still needs to get her University
student daughters’ seal of approval in
order to move forward.
