T he end of April 2017 saw the 10th Angling And 

Outdoor Adventure in Malaysia. This fair has been 

jointly organized by Rod & Line (English), Rod & 

Line (Chinese) & Pancing fishing magazines here 

in Malaysia; this year at the Hall 2 of the Setia City 

Convention Centre (SCCC) in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Meeting Of Friends 

The Angling And Outdoor Adventure Fair has always 

been something like a meeting place of friends 

with the same interest, fishing. This year’s fair too 

remained the same. As soon as I arrived at the fair 

(before entering the reception area) I had the pleasure 

of meeting up with angling buddies marking 

an enjoyable start to my visit.

Food Trucks 

Going with the times, the organizers brought in 

a few food trucks to the fair. They were parked 

just outside the concourse area serving up western 

food and local fare. I bought myself a plate 

of spaghetti and enjoy lunch with a fishing buddy, 

Joe who represents Expert Graphite (tackle distributor).

Oceania Boat 

The first thing to catch my eye is this centre console 

boat that is superb for fishing, called the Oceania 

22. It was parked right up front near the main 

entrance to the convention centre. This boat is a 

lovely boat that comes with a self draining cockpit, 

2 stainless steel rod holders, foredeck U shaped 

lounge with removable table, larger under-seat 

storage area with covers, marine (waterproof and 

UV resistant ) cushions, etc.

Yamaha Jet Ski 

The next thing that caught my eye is a Yamaha 

GP1800 jet ski. It has been some time since I have 

been on a jet ski and so I decided to check it out. It 

is no doubt a cool looking machine. Yamaha calls 

its jet skis Waverunners and I find that to be a nice 

name.

The Yamaha GP1800 Waverunner is a performance 

jet ski that is built on Yamaha’s racing 

heritage. It comes with Yamaha’s 1.8 litre supercharged 

4-cylinder, 4-stroke, Super Vortex High 

Output Marine Engine.

Other than the jet ski Yamaha showcased two motorcycles; 

a Yamaha MT-09 & a Yamaha MT-07. 

While I am not big into such bikes they were here 

on display and they do look attractive. Here are

The Yamaha MT-09 is designed for today’s generation 

of thrill seekers. It is designed to be intimidating 

with a LED twin-eye face that looks 

aggressive. This little beast comes with a 847cc 

3-cylinder crossplane engine that is fitted into a 

lightweight aluminium frame. Sounds like a little 

rocket doesn’t it?

Yamaha MT-07

Like the Yamaha MT-09, the MT-07 is too designed 

for today’s generation of thrill seekers. The MT-07 

is a lower priced version of the MT-09 with a liquid 

cooled smaller engine of 689cc inline 2-cylinder

frame.

Inside the hall Yamaha has a booth showcasing outboards 

as well as cool looking ATVs or All Terrain 

Vehicles. The outboards I believe will get plenty of 

angler’s eyes but the ATVs most certainly caught 

my attention.

Isuzu Pickup Trucks & SUV 

Entering the main hall one sees Isuzu pickup 

trucks and a SUV. Isuzu created a little faux camping 

area using a Coleman tent and outdoors furniture 

being a aluminium chair and picnic table 

and chair set.

Isuzu showcased the Isuzu D-Max pickup trucks 

that were kitted and fitted for adventure being ready 

with a winch, kangaroo bars (or bull bars), snorkle, 

etc. They have also been adorned with vinyl wrap 

giving them a cooler look.

For those who prefer an SUV instead of a pickup 

truck, Isuzu showcased the Isuzu MU-X showing 

off its roomy interior that sits up to seven adults 

although the back two will be putting up with lesser 

comfort. The chairs can be folded to carry more 

things should the need arises.

Majority of the exhibitors are fishing tackle distributors. 

This year’s Angling And Outdoor Adventure 

Fair saw a drop in participants especially the 

big brands and industry players. The big brands 

and players that gave the show a go are Shimano, 

Surecatch World that distributes brands such

Graphite, etc.

was one of the main exhibitors. As usual they took 

up a prominent spot in the convention centre. On 

show are rods, reels, clothing, etc. Of course what 

drew me was their reels.

the new Shimano Calcutta Conquest in this year’s 

fair. The Shimano Conquest comes with a FTB system 

or Finesse Tune Brake System that makes this 

reel ideal for finesse fishing.

Yes, there is a new Scorpion DC in town and Shimano 

showcased it at the Angling And Outdoor 

Adventure Fair 2017. 

With its Digital Control braking system, the previous 

generation of Scorpion DC’s achieved superior 

casting performance. Now with I-DC5, anglers 

can toggle between 5 brake levels and 3 different 

modes to set the appropriate brake force using 

the external and internal dial respectively. The 

smart DC system detects and responds quicker 

to any sudden changes in spool revolution due to 

wind conditions or lure type allowing anglers to 

concentrate on fishing with minimum worry about 

backlash.

Surecatch World 

Surecatch World was another big player here at 

this year’s Angling And Outdoor Fair. They showcased 

a new series of rods, the Fishman Brist. 

Fishman Brist rod lineup is a series of rods designed 

for lure fishing at wetlands and jungle rivers 

to fishing for barramundi, allowing for accurate 

casting. These rods are also strong and able to 

handle hard fighting fishes

Mullet, Cavalla, etc. Mustad showcased its Kaiju 

saltwater treble hooks, J Assist jig hooks, Feather

Zerek’s Live Mullet is one of the latest baits from

joints, the Live Mullet seems like a promising 

bait for big fish hunters.

Eupro came to the show too showcasing hooks and 

soft baits by Owner such as the Yuki Bug soft baits 

of which is a hybrid craw type bait with a tail that 

has an air chamber that allows it to rise over the 

body of the bait.

The Yuki bug features the Tasty Scent to draw in 

fishes, a seducing action, and what Owner calls 

“perfect fish catching colours.” So how good are

Marukyu 

Here is one for the bottom anglers. Marukyu, one 

of the bait brands from Japan was at the fair exhibiting 

its range of baits that a made for bottom fishing. 

One of their highlights is the CHINU POWER 

V10 SHIRO CHINU ground bait. This bait is said to 

attracts fish by slowly sinking to the bottom while 

attracting fish.

White bait makes it easy to identify currents in the 

water. The white powder draws the attention of 

bream, attracting and stimulating. Enhanced with 

“New MP yeast” it attracts bream into the area and 

keeps them feeding. Just by changing the amount 

of water used, and kneading time, the bait can be 

used over a wide range of fishing styles and water 

depths.

and throw them in the water. This will attract an 

assortment of fish like mackerel, sardines, rudderfish,

Hearty Rise Rods 

Out of Taiwan came Hearty Rise rods by ETUOH, 

a company that was established in 1976. They 

started with importing and distributing golfing 

equipment before going into fishing. With spending 

into R&D of high modulus carbon fibres, mesh 

and netting technologies; ETUOH started building 

fishing rods giving birth to Hearty Rise Rods 

as well as other fishing tackle.

to read logo in the crowd (to me at least).

tip to butt. It is the SAM Falling Jigging Rod (Slow 

Fall & Jigging rod). Other than these rods they 

also showcased other rods, jigs, and clothing.

China fishing tackle agents were also at the show 

showcasing some of the fishing tackle they can 

help do. Amongst them are Weihai Lure SV Fishing 

Tackle Co. Ltd., Weihai Kaiyue Composite Matar

The Fish Avengers booth had a few brands including 

WEEBASS showcasing and selling lures and rods, 

Umpan Pacak A1 that makes and sells baits and 

scent for bottom fishing, Tok Wan spoons, Kanicen 

Nix rods and soft baits, etc. Products from other 

brands such as Daiwa reels, Quantum reels, Flambeau 

tackle boxes and rod tubes were sold here.

The Kanicen Nix line up of ‘Grenti Strike’ soft plastic 

baits have been popular among ultralight anglers 

over the past few years. Kanicen Nix will be 

bringing in a new ultra light rod for the Malaysian

Dr Braid and MFA (Malaysian Fishing Addict) was 

at the fair too. Dr Braid is a Malaysian setup dealing 

with braided fishing lines. MFA is a local fishing 

apparel brand with fishing clothes that gives

X Custom Gear 

The X Custom Gear booth showcased and sold 

various reel tuning equipment from popular japanese 

brands such as ZPI and Hedgehog Studios. 

A reel tuner’s dream come true for sure. Those on 

sale include spool bearing removers, spools, tension 

knob caps, star drags, knobs, etc.

Apart from tuning products, X Custom Gear put 

up a whole range of apparel at their booth including 

caps, shirts, and even eye wear from A’wood 

Sunglasses. X Custom Gear clothing brands are 

Bass Brigade, Swimbait Underground, and Lateral 

Vision. They shared a booth with five other 

apparel brands including Cast Empire and Sisek 

Malaya making a booth for apparel lovers to drool 

over.

The 10th Angling And Outdoor Adventure Fair 

2017 was lacklustre in comparison to other Angling 

And Outdoor Adventure Fairs before it. There 

were not many new products to see, not much excitement 

going about, and it wasn’t as crowded 

even on the weekend.

My take is that it had too few big names and nothing 

new or exciting to offer; to become a crowd puller 

despite being in a pretty good venue to hold such a 

fair at. We feel that the anglers in Malaysia want to 

see more, experience more, and do more at such 

fairs. Perhaps offer rides on the ATVs or allow visitors 

to test new rods at the open field, and a retail 

section for anglers to buy fishing tackle at (since it 

is something that has long been demanded by anglers).
