When a man makes a promise with <strong>the</strong> intention <strong>of</strong> fulfilling it,<br />

but for some valid reason is unable to do so,<br />

he does not <strong>the</strong>reby commit a sin.<br />

According to Khuraym ibn F\tik, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> rose after <strong>the</strong><br />

completion <strong>of</strong> his morning prayer and said, 'The giving <strong>of</strong> false<br />

evidence is like committing idolatry.' He repeated this three times.<br />

Then he recited this passage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qur'\n:<br />

'Shun <strong>the</strong> loathsome evil <strong>of</strong> idolatrous beliefs and practices;<br />

and shun every word that is untrue. Dedicate yourselves to God<br />

and serve none besides Him.’ (22:30-31)<br />

A man once asked <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> if bigotry (tribalism/nationalism)<br />

was to love one's tribe 'No,' replied <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong>,<br />

'Bigotry is to help your tribe to tyrannise o<strong>the</strong>rs.'<br />
