VINEXPO: WHERE THE
EXPERTS FREELY SHARE
THEIR KNOWLEDGE
The “Experts Zone” is back at Vinexpo this year: a
space totally dedicated to the spiny issue of wine
and spirits logistics.
(l. to r.)
Yvan Astier, Country Manager JF Hillebrand
France put it so well when he said, “Logistics is
the link between proud, passionate producers
and importers and distributors looking to satisfy
consumers, connoisseurs or enthusiasts. This link
is invisible, but essential in order to protect such
a sensitive product and ensure the pleasure of
wine tasting around the world. Meet with us at the
Experts Zone where professionals are gathered to
listen, advise and answer your logistics needs.”
Vinexpo Signs Strategic
Agreement with Alibaba
Seven companies and more than 40 experts are
gathered at location L261, lakeside (door 26)
to provide on-site support and advice to industry
professionals from France and abroad on all
logistics matters. Exhibitors and visitors can find
the answers to all their questions with regard to
international logistics and regulations. Conferences
with specific themes are given at the booth but
also in different locations in order to tackle more
complex issues.
The topics being discussed are of critical
importance to healthy trade, with ideas like
“Exporting wines and spirits to the USA”, “Rail
Europe-China: what are the implications for wine
and spirits?” and “Evolution of shipping alliances
and opportunities for the industry”.
Indeed, in this sense, Vinexpo is so much more
than just a meeting place for the industry. It is more
and more playing a pivotal role in moving the
industry forward.
Vinexpo has signed an important
strategic partnership with China’s
biggest online player, the Alibaba
Group and its T-mall e-marketplace
that will help it build its profile and
reputation in China as well as
promoting the platforms to Vinexpo’s
exhibitors, producers and visitors.
A Memorandum of Understanding
was signed on the opening day
of this year’s exhibition by Vinexpo
chief executive, Guillaume Deglise
and Lei Zhao, Tmall’s director of fast
moving consumer goods.
The four-year collaboration sees
Alibaba’s B2C e-marketplaces
Tmall, tmall.com, and Tmall Global,
tmall.hk, become official partners
of both Vinexpo Bordeaux and
Vinexpo Hong Kong.
Deglise told Vinexpo Daily that the
partnership was significant for two
reasons. Firstly it gives Vinexpo the
opportunity to communicate with
the important growing Chinese
wine consumer through the Alibaba
network and its social media
platforms including Facebook,
Twitter, WeChat and Wiebo.
“It is a great move for Vinexpo as it
will help us re-inforce our brand and
profile to Chinese wine professionals
who are the biggest visitor group
to both Vinexpo Bordeaux and in
Hong Kong,” explained Deglise.
It will secondly be able to work with
Tmall and help promote its annual
9/9 online ‘Global Wine Festival’
which was first held on September
9 last year and returns again in
2017. The partnership will see
Tmall announce at each Vinexpo
what its “Country of Honour” is
going to be for that year’s 9/9
event. It was announced yesterday
that France will be the highlighted
country for the 2017 9/9 ‘Global
Wine Festival’.
Alibaba Group’s chief executive,
Daniel Zhang told the press
conference announcing the
Vinexpo and Tmall partnership that
he sees the 9/9 festival as being
the ideal “bridge” to help world
wine producers connect with the
fast growing middle class Chinese
consumer that is embracing wine,
and all the cultures from around
the world that wine is helping to
promote, more and more each
year.
TRADE TALK
Lei Zhao
General Manager,
Tmall Food
PRESS CORNER
Tracking Shifting
Mind Sets in China
Tmall helps in match-making with the right
wines for different local regions
Lei Zhao is General Manager for the Chinese retail giant Tmall Food. We asked him
what the most important trends are in wine sales in his territory.
Michel Bettane
& Thierry Desseauve
BETTANE+
DESSEAUVE
ARE BACK
@ VINEXPO!
Let’s start by saying that French wines still
occupy the biggest share of imported bottled
wines in China. Also, China is the fourth
biggest destination for French wines and
spirits exports by value, and figures provided
by Chinese customs suggest that China’s wine
imports continue to grow in both volume and
value during the first three months of 2016.
China is a country enchanted by wine: a
growing share of the population, including
younger generations, are refining their taste for
wine and becoming more sophisticated when
they choose what to drink. It’s also a mind set
shift, as consumers understand that wine is great
to pair with food.
Like French people, Chinese consumers choose
their wine by brand, region, vintage, grape
variety and flavour. Therefore, it’s important
for manufacturers to be aware that people
from different regions have different tastes.
For example, consumers from certain parts of
China, such as the southern Jiangsu Province,
tend to appreciate fruitier wine because their
cuisine is founded on sweeter flavours.
Ultimately, we still observe the dominance of
red wine – which is the colour traditionally
associated with good luck and happiness in
Chinese culture.
This year’s partner country is Spain. What
are your thoughts on Spanish wines, and
what other regions are you finding the most
interesting?
Spain is among the top wine producing
countries exporting its wine to China. Over the
past few years, regions like Rioja, Priorat and
Ribera del Duero have become more and more
popular among wine lovers. However, France
remains the most important wine country in the
world and the most famous in China.
Apart from France, Italy, Australia and the
United States are also our important partners.
These countries have already their own country
wine federation flagship stores on Tmall.
com, our B2C platform. Latin American wineproducing
countries are also quite famous,
such as Argentina a country which Jack Ma
(Alibaba’s founder) recently visited.
What are secrets for getting the best out of a
busy show like Vinexpo?
We think we can offer French wineries and
businesses our unique point of view and
unrivalled knowledge of the Chinese market.
Thanks to the insights we can provide, we
are able to guide French brands in their
internationalization journey, helping them to
unlock their potential and grow their presence
and export to China.
bettane+desseauve provides information to the
trade and helps consumers better understand
and choose wines whenever and wherever they
want to. That’s not surprising when one knows that
Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve have been
working together on the project for over 30 years.
We asked Thierry Desseauve what he is primarily
looking for at Vinexpo.
We are here to witness the energy, dynamics and
innovation of the wine industry. As for the marketing
side; the digital revolution is leading to major changes
in the buying process providing the end consumer with
more information than ever.
Which regions / varieties / wine styles do you feel
are gaining most in popularity in the region served
by your publications?
The whole world is a wine playground and we’re
unveiling, every year, talented winemakers from
Lebanon, Ukraine, Japan to mention a few alongside
the famous regions from Italy and France.
What are you most looking forward to at the show?
We’ll be focusing on our “Vinexpo featuring
bettane+desseauve” event that is a fresh “talks and
tastings” concept, where the focus is on highlighting
talented growers and unveiling exceptional, rare and
surprising worldwide wines from young producers
through 14 exciting master classes.
6 VINEXPO DAILY / DAY 2 EDITION / MONDAY 19 TH JUNE 2017
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
The Sommelier:
A Profession in its own Right
Becoming a sommelier just became much more serious…
thanks largely to the work of Philip Faure-Brac
Philippe Faure-Brac – Best
Sommelier in the World
1992 (and now of the
“Bistrot du Sommelier” –
Paris) is back at Vinexpo
this year animating master
classes as well as an
importance conference. We
asked him how the role of
the sommelier is evolving
today…
The interest in becoming a
sommelier as a career has been
continuing to progress over a
number of years, and more and
more young people are orienting
themselves towards this kind of
work. As an example, I preside
over the “Meilleur Ouvrier de
France” competition, which is
in its eighth edition. And each
time there are more nominees.
This year, there are already over
a hundred entries for the next
competition.
As the new President of the Union
de la Sommellerie Française
(UDSF), how do you feel about
being placed in this position, and
what will your role entail?
My aim is to give a true orientation
to this trade. I am working on
several fronts. The first is that
of training; stirring motivation
among young people, and at
the same time, trying to follow,
as best as I can, the different
types of training available in
France, and around the world.
France is a kind of “reference”
for the rest of the world in this
respect. The second theme is
that of communication. Creating
an interest comes through getting
people to talk about the topic, so I
am trying to put in place a number
of forms of communication. These
include competitions, radio and
TV programmes, conferences
and so on, as well as social
media, raising our profile. The
third point is a project I initiated
already some time ago with
the International Sommeliers’
Association, along with the OIV
(International Organisation of
Vine & Wine), for an official
recognition of the profession of
sommelier in its own right. People
have been hesitant as to whether
it’s a veritable trade or if it’s just
a role or a special function.
We have been working with
the members of the International
Sommeliers’ Association –
these past years, I have been
piloting the project – to obtain a
definition, or official recognition
of the profession of sommelier
around the world. Two steps have
been taken so far: an official
decree by the OIV in November
2014. Then, as recently as at the
beginning of this month, we came
to the end of our work in creating
a precise charter covering the
minimum training required in
order to obtain certification as a
sommelier. Now, there’s a training
programme, fully validated on an
international level by the OIV,
which defines exactly what a
sommelier is, and what he or she
has to do to obtain certification.
At Vinexpo 2017, you will
be animating a conference,
along with Gabriel Lepousez,
on Neuroenologie, when
neurosciences come into play
with tasting. Please tell us a little
more about this and where the
idea came from…
Wine tasting is on the one hand
a “technical” exercise, but at
the same time it engages one’s
emotions, and these emotions are
translated by a certain number of
reactions. The wine itself is not
entirely responsible for this. There
are many other environmental
factors that can play a major
role. These include the shape of
the bottle, the label, the cork,
the shape of the glass, the
temperature, the light, and so on.
All these factors bring negative
WINE TASTING IS ON THE
ONE HAND A “TECHNICAL”
EXERCISE, BUT AT THE SAME
TIME IT ENGAGES ONE’S
EMOTIONS
and positive influences to the
tasting before it’s even started…
both conscious and sub-conscious
– often the latter. There’s also a
cultural element. For the Swiss, a
screw cap bottle is quite normal,
whereas in France, it’s not. It’s
the meeting of neuro-science and
oenology.
Another novelty at Vinexpo
this year is the International
Sommeliers’ Association stand
(1-202). What can we find there?
There will be a number of
conferences, and I will be running
a master class on tasting wines
from the Loire Valley, among a
number of other master classes
that will be held at the stand.
Introducing Taiga Shtof
When White Turns to Amber…
For more than 700 years, in the heart of the
south-west, in Gascony more precisely, the
winegrowers have distilled white wine to
give birth to one of the most beautiful French
eaux-de-vies: Armagnac.
Fiery and racy, this precious liquid gathers
sagacity and fullness thanks to many years of
ageing in the quiet of the cellars. For Lionel
Osmin & Cie, a young and dynamic house
created in Pau in 2010, whose ambition is to
reveal the richness of the grapes and terroirs
of the Southwest, Armagnac represents the
“added soul” of this unique French wine
region.
Five Armagnacs, from 12 to 39 years of age,
bear the signature Lionel Osmin: a selection
based on emotion and pleasure, which have
given birth to strictly limited production, with
Armagnacs in the purest possible style, hardly
reduced, if at all, leaving the accelerators
of ageing to enhance the intrinsic character
and expression of these very genuine eauxde-vies.
The youngest should be tasted at a
temperature of 14-15 ° C, with a
chocolate or dried fruit dessert, the oldest to
accompany the aroma of a “Puro” cigar, at
room temperature, in a large crystal glass so
that their multiple aromas flourish.
One of the “stars of the show”: 1996, 16
years old, 42% draw N°1, June 2013: 463
bottles. Beautiful deep colour, sustained
amber… a moment of tasting as rare as the
number of bottles!
Roman Gazine, co-founder and CEO, Taiga Shtof is at Vinexpo
for the official launch of his new product. We asked him to tell us
more about its background…
Taiga Shtof is born out of an
appetite to create a super-premium,
smaller batch vodka with an
intriguing brand story and impactful
packaging; the epitome of quality,
handcrafted from Russia under the
purest tradition and originating from
the icy Taiga region in Siberia. It
sources the best ingredients from
the hardest to reach region, whilst
also taking cues from the lost art of
traditional vodka making – straight,
gastronomical, shared with friends.
Why choose Vinexpo for the
product launch?
Vinexpo is the largest trade show
and a must attend event for the
wine and spirit business, bringing
together thousands of international
industry experts with a remarkable
media coverage. Having ambitions
for international recognition, we
postponed our product launching on
main markets until Vinexpo, because
we could not miss such a great
opportunity to present our vodka to
the profession.
How does this fit in with your
presence at The Blend?
We are extremely proud that Taiga
Shtof will be the exclusive vodka
of this high-class party by Vinexpo,
and we hope the Taiga Shtof bar
will be a popular spot.
Please tell us about your “original”
stand idea.
It was conceived as a 360-degree
showroom, where one can be
fully immersed in the universe of
our brand. Hence, we merged
together a traditional Siberian
yurt architecture with modern
sophistication and impactful visuals.
California Wine Exports
Up 78% Over Past Decade
US wine exports, 90% from
California, reached US$1.62bn
in winery revenues in 2016, a
new record. Despite challenges
from a strong dollar, winery
revenues were up 1% from 2015.
Volume was 412.7 million litres
or 45.9 million cases.
“California wine exports have
grown 78% by value in the
last decade despite heavilysubsidised
foreign competitors
and high tariffs. Our global
trading partners are increasingly
acknowledging the high quality
of wine from the Golden State
and responding to our California
wines marketing efforts throughout
Terressentia Corporation, owner/operator
of the O.Z. Tyler Distillery in Owensboro,
Kentucky, has begun expanding production
capabilities at the plant.
Terressentia Corporation was founded in
2007 with the idea that technology can
radically improve both quality and taste of
distilled spirits. The company specializes in
contract production of distilled spirits for large
retail chains, individual brand owners, and
other distilleries or exporters.
In 2014, the corporation purchased the
26-acre former Charles Medley Distillery in
the world,” said Wine Institute
Vice President International
Marketing, Linsey Gallagher.
The top 10 export markets
for California wines are: the
European Union’s 28-member
countries, accounting for $685
million, followed by Canada,
$431 million; Hong Kong, $99
million; Japan, $87 million;
China, $82 million; Mexico,
$24 million; South Korea, $23
million; Switzerland, $19 million;
Singapore, $14 million; and
Philippines, $13 million.
Robert P. Koch, Wine Institute
President and CEO, says
California wine exports continue
to reflect the trend toward
“premiumisation” with the dollar
value of wine sales outpacing
volume shipments: “California
wines are well positioned for this
trend—our vintners are offering
quality, value, diverse styles
and environmental stewardship
in their winemaking. Combined
with the state’s iconic lifestyle,
innovative cuisine and beautiful
destinations, California wines
continue to gain attention from
consumers worldwide.”
The “Etchebest View” of Bordeaux
The globally celebrated Chef, Philippe Etchebest, opened the restaurant “Le Quatrième Mur” in
Bordeaux just under two years ago. We asked him what prompted him to open a new establishment
here…
Philippe Etchebest
Chef
I chose to settle in Bordeaux because it’s my hometown
and I wanted to contribute to the vibrancy of the city. Le
Quatrième Mur is a brasserie style restaurant set within
the amazing heritage building that is the National Opera
House, right in the middle of Bordeaux’s historic quarter.
Through our menus and our cooking, we remain true
to my principles of sharing and generosity. We offer
uncomplicated dishes but in which flavour plays the
leading role.
Why name the restaurant Le Quatrième Mur?
“Imagine a high wall standing along the edge of the
stage separating you from the audience… act your part
as though the curtain hasn’t been raised”. These were
the words of Denis Diderot in “La poésie dramatique”. It
was this quotation that the designer and architect used as
inspiration for their concept for the restaurant. They then
built a 27-metre long wall which separates the restaurant
from the dramatic arts next door.
Can you suggest a “must do” for those on their first visit
to the city?
Bordeaux is a beautiful city, which has enjoyed an
extraordinary dynamism over the past few years. The
city was voted best European destination in 2015 and
listed as the number one city in the Lonely Planet guide
2017. For those who visit the city for the first time, I would
suggest to simply “get lost” in the many streets of the city
centre and admire the architecture. The most important
thing is to take your time (something I have trouble to do
THROUGH OUR
MENUS AND OUR
COOKING, WE
REMAIN TRUE TO
MY PRINCIPLES OF
SHARING AND
GENEROSITY
myself) and enjoy. From the top of the Aquitaine bridge,
the scenery of Bordeaux at sunset is amazing.
Can you recommend an unusual place for the visitor to
discover?
I recommend the “Marché des Capucins” in the Saint
Michel area. It is a market that dates from several
centuries ago and symbolises tradition, authenticity and
the very best products. It is a place of life, where one can
discover and taste everything our beautiful region offers
and more. It’s definitely a different side of this vibrant
city and it reminds me so much of my childhood and my
parents’ restaurants “Le Chipiron” and “Cour de l’Yser”.
