Tell the readers who you are and where you’re
from?
Philadelphia suburb, Bucks County PA
Musically how would you describe your style of
production?
Ryan Leslie crossed with David Guetta, sprinkle a
little Diplo and Timbaland on top.
Being form Philly, do you still see the city as being
overlooked as far as main stream music artist?
Not anymore especially. The spotlight is on
Philadelphia more than ever. We have people
from LA coming here and sessions getting sent
down from NYC to mix because the fact is no one
can replicate our sound.
Why is it that the music that comes from the city is
almost always bypassed?
It's really not. That's a big misconception of the go
nowhere fast artists. Lots of stuff you're hearing
always originated from Philly. People just are
misinformed. I'd bet 10 - 1 that it's mostly broke
mixtape rappers still complaining about those
things, lol.
Do you think the industry and artist within the
industry miss out by not considering Philly a “must
go to” city?
Of course. We are the best. It's like having 500k
budget for a car and not going to FC Kerbeck.
Who are some of the artist that you have worked
with?
Flo Rida, 2Chainz, Neyo, Rick Ross, T Pain,
Yo Gotti, Sean Paul, Bryshere "Yazz" Gray from
Empire, Barrington Levy, Omelly, Lee Mazin and
more.
Who has been the most fun in the studio to work
with?
Omelly, that's my guy. The Dreamchasers are the
funniest group of cats. Always fun in the studio.
You just came back from LA. What was it like to be
at the Grammys live in person?
It was incredible. Just to see how the show
production really happens and be surrounded by so
much greatness. It's good to see what my future is
like when I get MY Grammys (plural). It was also
great to see such vast love from all over the world for
music and its positive influence on the world.
You are also an artist. You have a crazy video that
takes place in a grocery store, what was the concept
behind that?
I give that credit to Set in Motion LLC. Joe Staehly
and Yanni Rozes came up with the treatment and
whole concept. As with the title "Spend Some
Money", you would expect a ballin' club scene...
money, cars, girls. We were gonna do a DJ Booth in
the Gucci store, but they totally flipped it and made
it so marketable. Such vision these guys have. It was
incredible to see them work and watch it come to
life.
The single is doing extremely well. Is there a follow
up to it and if so when is it dropping?
Yes. I have a single called "Fly" on the way produced
by JL Beats.
What direction do you see rap music going in the
next 2 - 5 years?
Back to its roots. Trap is fun but it's dead, stupid, and
poopy. Unless you're Project Pat or TI... go home.
Real verses, real music, real bars, real hip hop is
back. That Philly hip hop and R&B sound is going
to smash it like never before. I'm excited because
these millennial fucks need to learn what's what.
Shit is trifling nowadays. If I see one more video
on Facebook that says, "rapper spits fire and puts
rappers to rest", I'll slap a kid.
In your opinion, what was the cause of mumble rap and will it be around in the future?
It'll always be there. There's a certain swag and vibe about it that's great. The simplicity. The dumb
flow can be good. But it's not hip hop and never will be. It's in it's own class. Let it stay there. Ya don't
like, it don't listen to it. But your ass will be drunk dabbin' at the club I bet biatch! Lol
What is the next thing on the table for G1fted Music?
Releasing these singles and getting the EP ready. In process working on some great high level projects
out in LA with some amazing people.
If you could work with any artist in their prime, just 1, dead or alive who would it be?
Michael Jackson, his passion was positive change for the world. Plus those royalties would keep me
good for 100 lives, lol.
From where do you draw your inspiration to create music?
Life, God, and personal experiences.
Who are you listening to right now? Chris Brown, Pit Bull, Anderson Pak, Brass Tracks, OT the Real,
Thoro, Lihtz Kamraz, Big Ooh, and most EDM DJs.
Where can we see and hear more from G1fted Music?
Bacardi Slim
Tell the readers who you are and where you’re
from?
First off thank you for having me bros. My name is
Bacardislim and I am from Las Vegas. If your not
familiar by now, I guarantee you will be very soon.
Lyrically how would you describe your style?
Lyrically I am a different artist. I honestly have more
styles then the Stylistics lol. You can not put me in a
box. I come with a different style everytime.
You have gained recognition that many MCs would
want as they are trying to build their careers. Being
put in XXL 2016 freshman class, what has that done
for you and your career?
It did not do a damn thing for me, all Bullshit aside. I
repeat not a damn thing. All it did was give me
something to talk about at the dinner table.
You were a part of an epic battle with Justin
Maywhether. Who won and is he even worthy of
calling himself a battle rapper?
Yes sir, the battle was a great look for the both of
us. Shout out to Justin Mayweather for showing up
and showing out. The battle has over 145k views
and is still going up. We broke the AHAT record
for most views within in a 24 hour period of its
release, we had hit about 8,800 in the first 24 hours.
So who won, I feel like I won 2 rounds to 1. I feel
like the first was debatable, and I won the 2nd and
3rd. Hands down Justin Mayweather was the best
opponent I have went up against. He honestly has
what it takes to move up the ranks in battle rap very
quickly if he chooses to do so.
What direction do you see rap music going in the next 2-5 years?
I really hope it goes back to the time when lyrics mattered. Don't get me wrong, some of those non rapping ass dudes got
some song's I really fuck with, but in my opinion that mumble rap has to come to an end.
In your opinion, what was the cause of mumble rap and will it be around in the future?
I would say Future and a lot of drugs, mainly Molly and Lean(promethazine syrup). I'm sure mumble rap will be around
for a while. What they need to do is classify that Bullshit as something other then hip hop. That way real mcs can get there
shine back.
What is the next thing on the table for Bacardi Slim?
What's the next stuff on the table for me? Well I just started my Internet radio show. It's called Country Boi Radio, it comes
on every Thursday and Friday from 10 - 11p.m. You can download the app Tunein to listen, put in Badboyzinsincity and
enjoy. Or you can go on UStream and watch the show live. Shout out to my boy Eddie Fuse and the whole Fuse team for
that opportunity. I'm about to drop my EP titled If God Say The Same, and I must say I feel like it's my best work to date.
Also the BullyBusters 702 crime fighting cartoon that me, my producer Producedbysherrod and the creator Big Keith have
been working on, will be going on The Ellen show March 24th to talk about the cartoon. It's an anti bullying cartoon that I
feel everyone needs to support. Some of the people who have jumped on board are Baby Bash, E-40 and Designer just to
name a few. The last things on the table is staying sucker free and raising my kids to be the best they can be.
If you could work with any artist in their prime, just 1, dead or alive who would it be?
That's a hard one but I would have to say Aaliyah. We would have made some timeless music together.
From where do you draw your inspiration to create music?
I draw inspiration from everywhere. Mainly from the experiences I've been through and the things I'm going through
currently. Or I will let the beat speak to me and guide me in the direction I need to be going.
Who’s on your play list?
A lot of Vegas artists, because we as a city have so much talent it's ridiculous. Seriously though, you will find all type of
different styles of music in my Playlist. I've got Young Jeezy to Luke Bryant, The Weekend to Taylor Swift. If it's dope it
will be in my playlist.
Where can we see and see more of Bacardi Slim?
You can find me where ever the money is lol. My fb is Bacardislim James, my Instagram is Bacardislim, download the
Tunein app and catch my radio show or put in www.thewavemag.com and catch me there.
Should he stick to boxing, lol?
Lol. You are trying to be funny but Justin is 3-0
professionally with two ko's by a body shot. He is
dope at rapping also, so it's up to him with the path he chooses to take. Either way he will be straight.
Did that help your career in any way or was it just for the love of the sport?
Of course it helped me, 145k more people know who I am now. When it comes to battle rap it's always for the love of
the sport. I am not, I repeat not a battle rapper. I make records full time and I only battle for the love and it's also a quick
way to make some money. I will kill a MC in the ring or on a song, it's just that simple.
Speaking of battles and boxing… (you probably know where this is going) What are your thoughts on Soulja
Boy and Chris Brown getting in the ring?
I think they both are fucking retarded. Next question please.
Which of your tattoos has the most
meaning?
All my tattoos have some type of
meaning/ reason behind it, it's hard
to say which one has the most
meaning. That being said, the
funniest for me is when I was young
for a small time I thought of pursuing
a career in tattooing. In one of those
adventures I designed a matching
tiki tattoo for my sister and I our
"sister tattoos". Which, she agreed
on getting with me before I went
through the hard process of tattooing
myself. After she was shocked to
see how well it came out (I had
only done one other tattoo at that
time). Then my sister told me, she
was thinking about it the whole time
and realized she was way to scared
and chickened out on me ;"P Now,
I have a "lonely" tiki on my leg to
remind me to not to trust my big sis
but how still awesome she is!! Still
makes me laugh, I'm glad to say she
still doesn't have one single tattoo…
kinda makes it better.
What was your first tattoo?
My first tattoo is a little fat black
bat on my pelvis. It's a spot that if
you are wearing a bikini, it would
be covered up. Location was a big
factor when getting this one because
I was so young and lacked the
parental permission. I don't suggest
getting tattooed young, but I don't
regret it either. It's never wise to
get a tattoo when your body is still
growing! Something I learned the
hard way.
Soon after I got another, then
another and it became hard to keep
them covered up, so the jig was up.
When my mom did find out, she
was not thrilled to say the least, but
over lots and lots of time she has
come to understand that it's one
way I express myself.
How many tattoos do you have?
I currently have 47 tattoos that
cover my body and the count is ever
growing.
Which tattoo hurt the most?
Hands down, my hand ;P I think
maybe because the skin is so thin but
I remember wanting him to stop so
bad. My artist was wonderful and
got the most beautiful clean lines in
and even with me not sitting still. I'm
still a little hesitant to do my second
hand and I still wanted to get a color
pop behind the Squirrel Nut Zippers
logo but I'm still mustering up the
courage.
What is your favorite tattoo?
My favorite tattoo is my tiki back piece, It's one of my most impressive
tattoos. I have always had a big passion for tiki art and wanted a very
large tattoo of one for years. When It came down to tattooing the rest
of my back, I asked my talented tattoo artist Jesse Bob Cone to design
it. There was only one condition to it's design, not to cover up my F
holes I already had tattooed on my back. It took JBob only one night to
design it and it fit perfectly, so perfect I almost cried! I love it not only
because I love tikis but it's impressive how another artist can create
something that fits you so well.
What inspired you to turn your body into a canvas
of beautiful art?
I think my mom did, she always talked about
wanting a little tattoo on her inner ankle, how
she thought that was super sexy. So, I naturally I
thought the same and started getting tattooed as
soon as I got my chance. If she could have ever
imagined that her statement would have had such
an impact.
I've always been into art, and I find the ability to
decorate your body with pictures of who you are
is such an awesome thought.
Who is your favorite tattoo artist?
Wow that’s really hard to say, I do have my top
guys who have tattooed me the most. These
guys are awesome! They have truly done some
amazing pieces on me and that’s why I go back to
them. When you’re sitting in a chair going through
lots of pain its good to know you feel comfortable
with the person touching you. It's also comforting
to know its going to be worth it at the end thats
why going to a great tattooist is important.
In order of amount of tattoos on me:
(Four or more tattoos)
Jesse Bob Cone @jessebobtattoo
Pancho Placas @pancho_placas
Thomas Morgan @thomasmorgan
Chance Ewing @nochance
Do you attend any tattoo conventions?
Yes! I love attending tattoo conventions, some of
my body art has won 1st place at a few. I also get
the opportunity to attend them when getting hired
to vend or do promo modeling. I hope to attend a
few this year.
Any advice for aspiring alternative/ tattooed
models?
Don't rush, think about what you want tattooed
and go to a good artist even if it's expensive. In the
long run you will be happy with what you get and
save more money. As for modeling, be reliable
and ready to work and remember to always do
your best because its not just your time.
Jay Valadez
What inspired you to become a tattoo artist?
Just being around the local tattoo parlor. My mom would drag me into them while she got a tattoo and to see the finished
product fascinated me.
Do you remember the first tattoo that you ever done?
Yes, at 13 I gave myself an Old English "J" on my ankle. I hid that thing till about 15.
How would you describe your tattooing style?
I don't really have a style, but I gear my art towards traditional. I love everything about it.
What has been the most difficult place for you to tattoo a man / woman?
Necks are hard for me. I try my hardest not to do them.
Do you have any tats? If so how many?
Yes I do, to many to count.
Did you do any of them yourself?
Yes, several
What is your best tattoo horror story?
I can't narrow it down to one but I do hate the classic "mover". That person that can't stop laughing and reaching for there
phone.
What is your take on people getting drunk and then getting inked?
Drunk people make bad decisions. Come back when your sober.
What is the craziest tattoo you ever put on someone?
I tattooed a good friend of mine on his ass. He has "your name" on his right cheek.
How big was largest tattoo you’ve ever done?
I'm currently working on a full color peacock that goes from waist to knee. I have about 20 hours in it and maybe another 5.
Are there any tattoo artists that inspire you?
Yes alot, but I really like Luke Wessmans style. He's got some great stuff.
What’s the secret to being a great tattoo artist?
Hardwork and dedication.
What is your favorite tattoo done by you?
I did a black and grey piece a few month back of The Plauge Doctor. It's turning into a full sock, I'm really
excited about that one.
For a first timer, where would you recommend they get a tattoo to experience the least amount of pain?
For the first timer I always recommend the ankle.
Words of advice for anyone that wants to become a tattoo artist?
Find an artist you like and ask them to apprentice you.Work harder than your did the day before. Never stop
learning.
Tell the readers who you are and where
you’re from?
I go by Screalla (Former Dipset Recording
Artist) born and raised in Chicago,
internationally known, nationally
recognized, and locally accepted.
Lyrically how would you describe your
style?
My style is very unique, I have a style that
is very adaptable to any and every track
that I get on. I can rap fast, and slow but
at the same time give you lyrical content
that will make you think and visualize the
story that I'm telling you keeping things in
a chronological order that always makes a
lot of sense.
What’s been going on since you graced
the cover of our Issue 10 – THE BLACK
& WHITE ISSUE?
I have been running my businesses (Blue
Smoke, Drunk Life Clothing, and Blue
Angels Modeling) as well as doing a lot
of traveling and living in the Dominican
Republic. I recently just got picked up
as a producer at www.Just4Beats.com
based out of London U.K. headed by
a gentleman by the name of Damon
Richards.
You have a new project about to drop,
The PIMP CHRONICLES. What can
you tell us about that?
Pimp Chronicles is a very unique project
in itself. I have had this idea in my head for
a long time but I was so busy doing other
things, that I had to put it off for a while
I also had to figure out what direction I
wanted to go in as far as the production and
beats. So one day I woke up and had the
whole concept for the project and started
to make and sample a lot of artist from the
90's like Escape, Keith Sweat, H-town and
a few others. This project is just an EP to
put out because I have been handling other
business and haven't been on the forefront
as far as music goes in a little while. I also
have some of my people on the EP that have
been doing their thing in different states.
So by the time this EP drops at the end of
February people will know Don Byti Balla,
Choosin Season, and Ivy Leauge. This EP
will be available on all the major streaming
stores like iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify,
GooglePlay, iHeart Radio, and a few more.
Pimping ain’t easy, but we see that you do
it quite well. What do you attribute that
to?
Watching the older kats in the game and
getting close to them seeing how they
move and them being my mentors. I have
been doing this for some time now but I
always have been one to follow the rules
of the game and in return it has giving me a
lot of rewards. I get a lot of respect in this
particular world because I show nothing
but respect to the individuals that's apart of
that world as well. And I can not forget the
"Queen" Debbie The Glass Lady which
is the mother of all the P's, the Queen
and the originator of the world famous
"Pimp Cup" used by celebrities all over the
world. She is a very spiritual woman and
makes sure that she always prays for each
and every one of us so that god is always
watching over us when we out traveling
and moving around. She has played a very
big role with me being as successful as I
am as far as this P world goes.
What inspired you to go in that direction
musically on this project?
Well I wanted to bring back the feel of real
music and give people that special feeling
they had when they first heard those songs
drop. It's a special vibe that everyone can ride
to and may even bring up some old memories
and fun times people had when they first
heard these songs on the radio. I already had
a few calls saying "I know exactly where
I was when I first heard this song". So this
project will bring people back to those special
places and times in their lives when things
where really good and it was safe to actually
be outside and really hanging out and kick
it, and plus it's just some really smooth riding
music and give you a little peak inside my life
and some of the things I have been through in
the game.
Tell us about your crazy food game.
You’realways posting images of great meals.
I have always been what you call an
adventurous eater. I have no idea where it
came from but I always like to eat and try
different foods from different cultures. My
friends and family say that I'm expensive and
that I spend too much money on the things
I eat, but I tell them that you have to enjoy
life and think and eat outside the box lol. But
seriously I do travel a lot and I have been
traveling outside the country for a while now
and it's a different experience when you go
to different countries and try their food. I
encourage everyone at least once in life to try
something that you never thought you would
eat and I promise you if you go to the right
establishment you may just surprise yourself. I
plan on one day just taking all the pictures of
food that I have and have tried and making a
book out of it...... so people can see the things
I eat and if they are up for it, to go out and try
some of the things that I put in the book.
Do you think that battels should stay on wax or be
addressed on different platforms?
For the most part I believe it should stay on wax but
at the same time some individuals take it to far and hit
that point of no return. I feel like if you not really about
what you rapping about, then just leave it alone because
that other person might really be about that in real life
or might have people around them that feed that ego
and make them get up and be about that life so they
can keep up a certain reputation. Battles have been in
music since the beginning of time, but now you just
have people that get embarrassed and their feelings get
hurt, now that want to take it to a whole different level.
What direction do you see rap music going in the next
2-5 years?
Well I don't know if people are really paying attention,
but things are coming right back around in a full circle.
Lyrics are coming back, more musical beats are coming
back, a lot of the veterans in the game are coming back
better then ever and reinventing themselves. It's already
being changed and reformatted as we speak.
In your opinion, what was the cause of mumble rap
and will it be around in the future?
This mumble rap thing is already phasing out. It will
not be a "thing" in the future because like I said the
veterans as well as a few new artists I been hearing are
changing that and bringing back more lyrical content.
I think this whole mumble rap with the new generation
came about because the "OG's" sat down and took a
back seat and let them shine, nothing wrong with that.
But as time went on it started to get out of hand, every
artist started to sound the same, so now looking at
what I have been seeing lately, the vets had enough and
started to come back and show them how it's supposed
to be done. After Ebro and the hot 97 crew started to
make the younger generation freestyle live and no one
could come up with anything or wasn't making any
sense and embarrassing themselves, I think that's when
people starting really realizing that this is about to be
extinct. So now you see the resurgence of people like
Juelz Santana, Jim Jones, Jay-Z even coming back hard,
T.I.P. coming show his skills on a political aspect, and
it's a lot of veterans that's really coming with it, this is
just to name a few.
What is the next thing on the table for Screalla?
Well I'm doing more of production now more so over
rapping, I have tapped into the Dominican market and
they love what I have to offer so I'm trying to make a
name over there. Me and. Y crew "4240 Hustle Squad"
we have been working on this project "Kingz of Tha
Kitchen 2: The (Re-Up) and going to the Dominican
Republic shooting videos for this project. I have been
in talks with Charlie Baltimore about a tv show she has
coming out that I might be doing some production on.
I'm really just trying to get my hands into a little bIt of
everything and be a while rounded businessman and
not just a producer and an artist, I have a lot to offer as
far as business goes and now people are really starting
to realize that.
If you could work with any artist in their prime, just 1,
dead or alive who would it be?
Soulja Slim, that was one of the realist artist that ever
lived. I say this because he did not sugar coat anything,
what he said was what he meant and that was it. He
was cool, laid back, but would let you know what it was
with no problem and if you crossed that line then you
had to deal with whatever came your way.
From where do you draw your inspiration to create
music?
Really just life, things I see, places I been, experiences
and a lot of things I have done and been through 1st
hand. I don't like to fabricate things when it comes to
my music, I don't write lyrics when I record, everything
is from memory and I can picture the exact situation
that I'm telling you about and that's how I'm able to
tell stories in a chronological order because it's like an
out of body experience and I'm standing in the room
watching everything happen and I'm just explaining it
to the listener word for word as it's happening.
Who’s on your play list?
Of course the squad 4240 Hustle Squad, Rick Ross, my
homie Fiend (Formerly of No Limit) I produced some
tracks for him as well, Curren$y, Ralo Tha Pimp, a lot
of 70's old school music, and some Dominican music.
Which of your tattoos has the
most meaning?
I think my NIghtmare Before
Christmas Sleeve has the most
meaning because its something
for my dad that i lost a good relationship
with. Lets just say Christianity
and father that i was possessed
by it. I was obsessed with
Jack and Sally and I was 13 years
old so that explains I was an emo
kid haha. Anyways, I was raised
in a Christian household with my
grandfather being a pastor and
my dad thought I was possessed
by the movie. Therefore, they got
rid of all my NBC merchandise
and apparel and made a ritual
which was quite scarring so I got
it tattooed on me because they
can’t take that away from me.
What was your first tattoo?
My first tattoo was a pink flower
on my shoulder.
How many tattoos do you have?
I normally say 1 because they all
combine haha.
Which tattoo hurt the most?
I would have to say all over my
stomach killed ribs and sternum
especially.
What is your favorite tattoo?
