A Message from Our Rabbi
June 12: I am writing these lines while
all the graduations that I participated in
this past week, here at Beth Torah, are
fresh in my mind. Each one was unique
in its own way. Junior Kindergarten,
moving up to Kindergarten, 5th grade
moving up ceremony to Middle School
and 8th grade graduation. The last two
were the final time that these students
would be on our campus, as they are
now moving to Middle School at the
Posnack Campus and the 8th graders
are off to High School. The ceremonies
were all moving and beautiful in their
own right, and at each one, there was
the sensation of one door closing and
a new one opening, filled with new
dreams and expectations for those that
stand at the entrance.
Every Monday and Thursday, the
Middle School students have joined
the Minyanaires at the morning minyan
as part of their Tefilah. I realized that
this past Thursday, the 8th of June,
would be the last time that I would see
all of them in minyan as they would
no longer be on our campus due to
the new arrangement with Posnack
and Hochberg Preparatory School for
Middle School. So I thought long and
hard as to the “Final Message” I would
leave them with as they departed for
this next chapter on their educational
path. After a short while, I knew that
it had to be a very special one, as it was
the last time they would be together as
a group, so I decided to take a passage
from the Talmud that for me, represents
the essence of Judaism.
In the Talmud, the Rabbis teach us:
“In the hour when an individual is
brought before the heavenly court for
judgment, the person is asked:
• Did you conduct your [business]
affairs honestly?
• Did you set aside regular time for
Torah study?
• Did you work at having children?
• Did you look forward to the world’s
redemption?
(Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 31a)
So I said to the kids, “Whether you
believe there is a heavenly court or
not, that is not the main theme of
this Talmud page. What’s important
is what our rabbis believed matters to
God the most.”
Question #1, really asks, were you
honest with yourself and with others?
Did you conduct yourself in a manner
that you would like others to treat
you?
Question #2, Torah study as I
understand it is more than the study of
the five books of Moses. The question
is an invitation to ask yourself, “Am
I curious? Did I grow in knowledge
from one year to the other? Did I allow
myself to grow by asking questions
and respecting the replies that others
might give?”
Question #3, having children, well they
laughed at that one!!! Maybe, bringing
children into the world means that if
you are a responsible parent, you will
do everything to avoid WARS because
your kids and other kids may die?
Question #4, The World’s redemption?
Redemption has different meanings
for different people.
RABBI MARIO ROJZMAN
I understand it in the following way:
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT TOMORROW
CAN BE BETTER THAN YESTERDAY????
I invite you to reflect on these questions
during the summer and to arrive at
practical answers for yourself about
what they represent. I am very proud
to know that the religious civilization
that I belong to finds importance in
honesty, and overcoming obstacles
to peace thereby assuring a better
tomorrow.
Wishing you a safe and healthy summer
with family and friends!
A Message from Our Cantor
Hiddur P’naizaken
(Respect for the Elder)
(In honor of the memories of Esther Propis
and Roni Mintz z”l)
“Rise before the aged and show respect to the elderly”
Leviticus 19:32
Visiting and respecting the elders is a
value taught to me by my parents and
my grandmother from a very early
age. I was one of those lucky kids who
had the chance to meet his greatgrandmother.
I heard her stories and
songs and we frequently engaged in
long conversations with her. Almost
every afternoon I would spend time
with my Bobe “Uque” and dance,
sing, cook and share jokes with her.
Twice a week she would take me to
her senior’s Jewish club where I often
serenaded them. In addition, when
I was 12 years old and started my Bar
Mitzvah training, my rabbi asked me to
start accompanying him every Friday
afternoon before the service to the
nursing home across the street from
the synagogue. He asked me to take my
guitar and to co-lead services and sing
some Jewish folk songs with him at the
home. I have great memories about
those years, but one thing I remember
vividly: my rabbi reminded me that each
Friday might be different than the next
one as some souls might depart from
this world during that week. He was
not just preventing me from a surprise,
but teaching me an important life cycle
lesson; we will all depart one day, and
it’s just part of the human life.
I have had the honor and pleasure to
represent BTBRC by going to The Sterling
Aventura every Friday afternoon and
running a 50 minute Shabbat service
with song and stories. I started last
year when I was asked to lead a short
service for Rosh Hashana and then for
Yom Kippur. So far I have also done
every holiday including a Passover
Seder. We have created a sacred
community within the facilities and it is
part of the Friday’s announcements all
over the building that we have Shabbat
Services. Each resident lives there
for a reason and each of them might
have a special condition, for some
mild and for others a more severe
one. Some are respectful, and some
are not. They all come from different
Jewish backgrounds, from Reform to
Orthodox, Sephardic to Ashkenazi,
from Latin America to Russia, but for
me they are my special community
of Friday afternoons and they are all
equally important and exceptional.
Roni Mintz z”l was a permanent
resident of The Sterling and Esther
CANTOR
GASTÓN BOGOMOLNI
Propis z”l was there for only 4 weeks.
Each of them, on a different Friday, were
no longer there, like my rabbi once had
warned me. Their absence was felt by
all, especially by me. Although I knew
every week that I was going to see
them the day after during the Shabbat
morning service at shul, I so enjoyed
that special chance to share yet another
Friday Shabbat experience with them
and to listen to their vibrant singing,
exchange smiles with each other and
learn from them. May we all have the
chance to live a long and happy life like
they did, full of wisdom and yiddishkeit.
May their memories be for a blessing.
A Message from Our Co-Presidents
As one of my first acts as your new Co-
President, I have been drafted to write
the President’s message for this issue
of Torah Times. What an honor! Here
goes!
Although it may still be spring as I write
this, it certainly feels like summer – it’s
HOT! Hot is also a word that you can
easily use to describe our Beth Torah.
We are a HOT synagogue. We are
growing in size, diversity and substance
every year, and this upcoming year
promises to be no different.
During the summer things will slow
down a bit, but not that much. Our
Shirley Schreiber Family Camp Simcha
opens on June 12. We expect more
than 225 children to attend this year,
and for all to have a wonderful, funfilled
summer with us. Camp Simcha
has grown into one of the pre-eminent
childrens’ camps in the area.
Although many of our congregants will
leave the heat for cooler surroundings,
for either part or all of the summer,
of course our religious services will
continue unabated. We will have
Minyan services every morning,
although another body or two from
time to time wouldn’t hurt so please
try to make it at least once in awhile.
We will also have Shabbat services
every Friday night (enjoy the singing
as we welcome the Sabbath!) and
Saturday morning.
There are always summer projects and
one will be the renovation of our never
completed mikvah into a specialty
classroom for our children. We will
also be making repairs and doing other
things to continue to beautify our Beth
Torah Benny Rok Campus.
Your new Executive Officers, Board
members, clergy, staff and our many
volunteers will be working over
the summer to get us off to a great
September start! This year Rosh
Hashanah begins the evening of
September 20. We will once again have
services in both English and Spanish,
and are looking forward to being with
you for the Yamim Noraim (the High
Holy Days), and then for Sukkot and
Simchat Torah. However, all of this
takes a lot of work! If you would like to
help, please call the office at 305-932-
2829 and let us know!
Finally, I want to say that I have
been very honored to have had the
opportunity to serve you for the
past two years as an Executive Vice
President, and now to serve as a co-
President with the amazing Steven
Scheck, who has agreed to continue
for one more year. I have been able
to meet and enjoy so many wonderful
people on my Beth Torah journey, and
know that will not change. I want to
thank my wonderful wife of 43 years,
Ronna, for all of her support and for
putting up with my frequent absences
on synagogue business. We have been
Beth Torah members since 1983. Our
decision to join was one of the best we
ever made.
Let’s work together this year, as a
team, to continue to make Beth Torah
the wonderful place it is!
A Message from Our
Chief Operating Officer
WELCOME
Another year has come and gone.
It’s hard to believe. Looking back at
the path, one wouldn’t think that we
could have navigated it so well. Were
there bumps? Sure. But the successes,
oh there were successes!!! It’s about
this point in an article or letter where
people start listing all that they or the
organization has accomplished. And
yes, we have done amazing things!
In fact, we have done GREAT things.
However, true greatness is found in
accomplishments that indelibly shape
and define the future of our Synagogue
and its impact in the lives of its
members and the South Florida Jewish
Community.
One area of success that I am most
proud of is our Scheck Family Religious
School. I’m sure you are asking “why?”
Well the reason is amazingly simple. We
did something that nobody saw coming
and we implemented it this year. It
was a leap of faith that turned out to
be sheer greatness. We implemented
the “free religious school” model. We
made after school Jewish Education an
inherent part of being a member of our
community. We were the first in the
area and that courage paid off with a
25% growth of the school and many
new families to our synagogue. It was
true greatness and we created it by
breaking with the past but staying true
to our values.
In the coming year, we as a synagogue
will be working closer with the ECA.
There will be new technology and
more interaction between staffs.
New programs will be implemented.
Our clergy will have a greater role
in our children’s education. There
is tremendous excitement on
everyone’s part as we get to create
new relationships and enhance the
ones that already exist. Some changes
have already been implemented,
some have been planned, and more
are still yet to be planned. But the
biggest excitement comes from being
true to our commitment of setting the
standard in Early Childhood Education,
as we have been doing for the past
75 years, and taking the program to
the next level. That, for me, is true
greatness.
This year will absolutely bring more
successes and greatness to our
synagogue. In fact, if you are reading
this on your computer, you have already
seen the first step in more greatnes.
We have done a printed Torah Times
for years and years. It’s time to move
to the digital era…our new Torah Times
online version will be an interactive
magazine. This one is only the first
edition and we are confident that you
will find this refreshed Torah Times
to be easy to read and convenient to
share with friends!
The entire staff at Beth Torah would
like to thank you for an amazing year,
and especially the great year to come!
A Message from Our
Membership Director
Dear Families and Friends,
Unbelievably, we are closing another
cycle; the year went by filled with great
shared moments in our community.
Where has the year gone? So fast?
When did it happen? It happened
right here, with our Beth Torah Family.
Just a simple exercise… try counting a
few of the experiences you treasured
in your memory. It could be just a
simple moment at Shabbat or having a
great time at any of our events, or just
listening to your children sharing any
story learned in school or at shul.
It would be endless to list all of our
events here, but we are certain that we
can count the blessings of being part of
our community. The inspiring wisdom
of our Rabbis who lead us in individual
and communal spirituality, the fun
times shared at our social and cultural
events, the new friendships made with
other families, the warmth and support
provided by the community to families
in spiritual need, and the list could go
on and on.
As Membership Director, I want to take
this opportunity to thank each and
every one of you for allowing us to enter
into your life, for the time dispensed
by the volunteers at every event, for
participating in the ongoing and special
programs; or for bringing another friend
to a program. Honestly, we couldn’t
have done it without you; without our
members. We commend each and every
committee that has worked diligently
to provide great opportunities to our
community. Just to name some of
them: Adult Education, Comite Latino,
Membership, Sisterhood, Men’s Club,
Religious School, Ritual, Social Action
and Ways and Means. To all of you
Todah Rabbah!
The summer is now around the corner.
Perhaps some of you are packing
for vacations. We are already busy
planning for you for next year. Soon,
we will have to renew the vows with
our synagogue and start taking care of
High Holy Days seats for your relatives
and friends. Spread the word, “WE ARE
HERE FOR YOU”.
Our Beth Torah Family is driven by
the principle that we care about you
and yours. With the sense of a caring
community we would love to welcome
your friends, listen to their stories and
share ours. In that way we will join
forces together to expand a community
that enriches our lives.
We wish you and your family a safe and
relaxing summer filled with love and
blessings.
Stay in touch over the summer. There
is a lot going on right here at Beth
Torah that is designed just for you. We
are looking forward to greeting you in
Shul.
feel free to reach me at grascovsky@
Dear Dr. Keruv
My husband and I are new to the Miami
area. I am Jewish, he is not, and we
have two children ages six and eight.
We are looking for a synagogue that
is welcoming to interfaith families
because we want to enroll our children
in religious school and become part of
a community of conservative Jews. I
really don’t know where to start and
would appreciate your guidance.
Thank you,
Shul-less in Miami
Dear Shul-less,
I suggest that you go online and search
for synagogues in your area.
A welcoming synagogue will have on
its homepage a link that should say
Interfaith Families. Follow the link and
read the information on the webpage.
Many conservative synagogues have
Keruv Consultants. These are men and
women who have been trained to help
their synagogues welcome interfaith
families. After reading the information
on the websites you can contact the
Keruv Consultants or rabbis to discuss
joining the synagogue of your choice.
Good luck in your search,
News from Sisterhood
Dear Sisters,
It has been quite a roller coaster ride for all of us these past
few months.
Our main event at the Synagogue, honoring Steven and
Michele Scheck, Mark Moyel and myself was a beautiful fun
filled night. Thank you all again for your generous support
both financially and for attending .
March and April were very busy months for us with Sisterhood
Shabbat. Purim came and our Rabbis brought light on the
subject of “Sex in the Bible”, or as we called it “50 SHADES
OF VASHTI”. Then we had our Women’ Seder. Over 60 of you
attended and it seems we get stronger every year. Thank
you to our wonderful committee who make it different and
meaningful each year. I know our family uses parts of “our”
Hagaddah at our own Seders.
Our annual raffle campaign is still going strong and thanks to
all of you who participate we will be giving our beloved Beth
Torah a wonderful donation.
As the roller coaster goes up, it does come crashing down just
like in life. This year, we lost three of our beautiful Matriarchs
Linda Wagner z’l, Esther Propis z’l and Roni Mintz z’l. These
women were integral parts of our Sisterhood stayed active
until the end. They will truly be missed by all of us.
As summer approaches our planning committee has their
thinking caps on to make our coming year our best one
yet. Help us with your ideas by contacting Terry Jonas
(termar4751@yahoo.com).
Keep on the lookout for our “Honey” project, which we will
be doing again this year. Order forms will be out shortly.
What a beautiful gift to send to family and friends near and
far for Rosh Hashonah.
Please don’t forget to send in your New Years Greetings
on time so that we may include your wishes in our special
edition of the Holiday issue of Torah Times.
I would like to thank all of our generous ladies and men who
continually support Sisterhood with their donations to our
Golden Book (greeting card for all life cycles) Arlene Keil,
Bette Joy Field, Brenda Auerbach, and Etta Epstein.
General fund: Ruth Waret, Dora Katz, Dan Stein, Barbara
Mishael, Rick Golden, Samuel Kaplan, Etta Epstein, Steven
Scheck, and Judges Larry & Caryn Schwartz.
We are still offering MahJong lessons. If you are interested,
contact Lois Danis at 305-794-4906 or Judy Feinman at 305-
542-0020.
Stay tuned for all our upcoming events and please join us as
often as you can.
Have a wonderful Summer
B’Shalom
News from the
Scheck Family Religious School
Dear Parents,
What an amazing year! The 2016-2017 (5777) school year is already gone!
can you believe it?
This was our first year of “Free Religious School” for our members and we
share with great pride that the Scheck Family Religious School has grown
significantly during this school year. We welcomed twenty three (23) new
families and thirty two (32) new students to our school.
Our staff has been hard at work refining and enhancing all facets of
supplementary Jewish education, from Hebrew instruction by ability (in
small groups) to meaningful experiential programs that strengthen the
Jewish identity in our students.
Students and families have had many learning opportunities throughout the
year geared to provide a true Jewish community to our learners as well as a
learning and vibrant community to our families.
On a personal and professional level I’m extremely thankful to all of you for
your support in being partners with us educating the future generations.
We commend our “Visionaries” for their support to make the Scheck Family
Religious School program free of charge to our members.
We compliment our staff for another successful year of Jewish learning.
We congratulate our children for their effort in their weekly learning.
We applaud our parents for trusting us and trusting Beth Torah with your
marvelous children.
We can’t thank Mindy Kurkin, V.P of Education, enough for the tireless hours
she dedicated to the school.
We hug our colleagues in the office for the great teamwork and camaraderie
provided this year.
We salute our Rabbis and Cantor for always being here with inspiring words
of wisdom and spiritual guidance. To all of you TODAH RABBAH! We are all
very proud of all of you!
To continue our very dynamic prosperity, we spent the last several months
planning and preparing for the next school year. We, at Scheck Family
Religious School, believe strongly in the need to always provide a forward
Jewish thinking education, and for that we work collaboratively with our
families as we emphasize the partnership between home and school. So,
if you haven’t submitted you registration yet, please do so at your earliest
convenience and help us plan accordingly for another cycle of Jewish
learning.
For now, we say L’hitratot! And share with you a flavor of some of the Kodak
Moments of this year.
Have a great summer
Sincerely,
Morah Gaby
