PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Just over 49 years ago a group of visionary
Ukrainian Canadians initiated a new
organization to address a growing need in
the Ukrainian Canadian community. These
visionaries knew that the expansion of the
community through multiple generations
in Canada would result in a large number of
cultural activities in Canada and beyond and
as a result the Shevchenko Foundation was
formed. The first imperative in the early days
was to create a self-sustaining organization
dedicated to maintaining the Ukrainian
Canadian cultural identity and sense of
cultural purpose in a dynamic Canada which
had become the chosen homeland for many
Ukrainians and their succeeding generations.
Over the past 49 years the Foundation has
participated in hundreds of projects and
countless successes which represent a truly
wide and deep cultural heritage in our
community. Over its lifetime the Shevchenko
Foundation has provided over 9 million
dollars of support to the Ukrainian
Canadian community.
Having travelled to Ukraine on more than one
occasion in the past year I have been contacted
by many Ukrainians in the Diaspora asking
for tips or help on how to establish similar
foundations beyond Ukraine. In this regard
the Shevchenko Foundation is a leader for
the entire Diaspora and the credit for this
leadership rests foremost with the donors
who place their trust in a vibrant Board of
Directors, a committed voluntary Investment
Committee headed up by Mr. Wally Shoemay
and of course our wonderful staff at our
Winnipeg office headed by our Executive
Director, Ms. Lesia Szwaluk.
The needs of the Ukrainian Canadian
community have evolved and so has the
strategy of the Shevchenko Foundation in
meeting those needs. The Shevchenko
Foundation has initiated a strategy for
providing grants to qualify grantees in
four key areas:
Our Arts Program recognizes the value of the
arts as a fundamental aspect of expressing
unique cultural identity by promoting the
creation, advancement and dissemination
of Ukrainian Canadian artistic endeavour
throughout Canada. This is reflected by
grants in the areas of the literary arts, music,
theatre, visual arts, dance and media arts.
The second pillar of our granting strategy
is the Educational Program. Through this
program the Foundation seeks to increase
and disseminate knowledge of all aspects
of Ukrainian life in Canada through
traditional and non-traditional educational
programming and by assisting resource and
curriculum development in both public and
community-based schools. We also support
creative initiatives in educational programs,
professional development for educators,
the teaching of Ukrainian language and
Ukrainian Canadian subjects at the postsecondary
level, and the publication of
scholarly works on Ukrainian and Ukrainian
Canadian topics. In addition, the Education
Program provides for a wide-ranging bursary
program for students pursuing graduate
studies in Canada at the MA or PhD level
in a recognized Ukrainian or Ukrainian
Canadian discipline as well as meeting the
need for bursaries for undergraduate students
studying in a language program in Ukraine
through an accredited Canadian university.
The Foundation has also pioneered the
Community Development Program. We are
committed to the sustainability of a vibrant
and flourishing Ukrainian community in
Canada through the fostering of a sense of
common identity and fellowship, participation
in community life and the strengthening of
community organizations. This includes
supporting programs operated by the Ukrainian
Canadian Congress, national community
development projects of Ukrainian Canadian
organizations and local community initiatives
via local festivals, community concerts and
activities of local organizations.
Finally, the Foundation wishes to strengthen
our Ukrainian Canadian identity through
our Heritage Program which will ensure that
the history of the Ukrainian community in
Canada is preserved and that the important
sources of Ukrainian Canadian history are
not lost to future generations. This involves
grants for research, writing and publications
of the histories of local communities,
support for published works on the history
of Ukrainians in Canada for both scholarly
and mass audiences, the development of
exhibitions and events for the display of
archival sources and artifacts, the acquisitions
by recognized and established institutions
of heritage items or collections at risk and
ultimately providing support to existing and
established institutions of archival repositories,
museums, libraries, art galleries and research
programs.
To be the President of a prestigious
organization that has these important core
objectives is truly humbling. Our goals are
only matched by the incredible output and
demand by Ukrainian Canadians in all of
these areas where our four programs are
dedicated. All of this effort takes volunteer
time and money. Thankfully, our Ukrainian
Canadian community is very generous in
the work of its volunteers and the financial
generosity of our individuals is certainly well
known. Unfortunately, to meet the needs and
expectations of our community, I must say
that we do not have sufficient resources to
fully actualize all of the programs in a
manner that would bring the greatest
amount of return to our community.
Ongoing fundraising events and activities are
critical to the continuation and sustainability
of the Shevchenko Foundation and without
this ongoing effort many of the above
described programs would simply cease
to exist or would not be funded at all.
Over the course of 49 years the hopes of the
Shevchenko Foundation have remained alive
and vibrant. It is an honour to have been
chosen lead volunteer and President of the
Foundation to carry forward these hopes and
dreams. With the continued support of our
Ukrainian Canadian community we will
endure in preparing a firm foundation for
our organization as it anticipates the
commencement of its next half century
of activity.
God bless all of you and your families and
once again a sincere thank you for your
continuing support.
Andriy Hladyshevsky, Q.C.
president
UCAMA is using the Shevchenko Foundation grant received in December 2011
to digitize newspapers in our collection that date from the early to mid twentieth
century. The building that has housed these newspapers for decades does not
provide a good storage environment for them. The newspapers tend to be quite
brittle and some have suffered water damage due to previous flooding. It is
important that they be preserved. It is possible that many of these newspaper
editions are not held by any other institution. On behalf of the UCAMA board
of directors, I thank the Shevchenko Foundation for allowing us to carry out this
important preservation project. UCAMA’s limited operations budget would not
have allowed the archive-museum to carry out this project on its own.
Sincerely,
the financial support provided by the Shevchenko
Foundation that launched the re-design of our
website and made possible the purchase of some
much-needed promotional materials. Chaban
is excited to have the Foundation’s support to
enhance our web presence to showcase the
cultural beauty, regional differences and
background of Ukrainian dance to all who
have access to the internet. The web re-design
started in the summer of 2011 with the migration
of information from Chaban’s existing website.
New information is being uploaded during
this 2011–12 season as we work with
professional photographers for dynamic action
shots and updates to our costume inventory,
keeping in mind our objective of promoting
Ukrainian culture through dance and the visual
representation of our art form. The final aspect
of this project will be the completion of portable
banners to display at our Folklore booth,
for example, and when we travel for cultural
events. Once again, we thank the Foundation
for its support in making this dream a reality
for Chaban.
WALTER HALCHUK MEMORIAL
BOOK AWARD 2012
Walter Halchuk enjoyed reading about history and was an
active member of the Ukrainian Canadian community.
Through a book award in his memory, the Shevchenko
Foundation wishes to highlight both these passions.
The Walter Halchuk Memorial Book Award was established
after his passing in 2004. It is presented to the student
earning the highest mark in a Canadian history course at
Laurentian University. Over the last 7 years, a book on
Canadian History is presented to a worthy student. This
year’s recipient is Amy Konrad. During the 2011–2012
academic year, Amy achieved a mark of 98% in HIST 3156,
History of Education in Canada.
This year the book selected for the award is The Codex
Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas, by
Francois-Marc Gagnon, et al. The Shevchenko Foundation
congratulates Amy Konrad as this year’s recipient of the
Walter Halchuk Memorial Book Award.
Mr. Halchuk was the President of the Ukrainian Canadian
Congress-Sudbury Branch and UCC-Ontario Provincial
Council. He was an active member of the Ukrainian
Canadian Civil Liberties Association (UCCLA), which
After being in Ukraine, my future studies
and endeavours are now even more confidently
made with focus on Ukrainian language and
cultural studies. I am overwhelmed by my
community and culture for its support, for
the network of friends and professionals I have
made in it, and for the opportunity to carry on
volunteering and creating a future for the
Ukrainians in Canada. I believe that Ukrainian
people have much to contribute to the world.
There are many relevant issues in Ukraine’s
contemporary affairs, and the history in Ukraine
has often been motive for major events in Europe
and the rest of the world.
I hope to be a member of the Ukrainian
community who can add to this relevance and
continue sharing Ukrainian contributions as
a vital part of the varied fabric Canada has
become and has been built on. The Shevchenko
Foundation support encourages and sustains
that contribution, and I thank you sincerely.
Thank you again,
Cory Chetyrbok
Last summer I spent seven and a half weeks
in Ternopil, Ukraine. Taking part in the
spring session in Ukraine changed my life.
I met so many beautiful people who
inspired me to become a better person.
My professor, Olena Huzar, at the Ternopil
Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical
University was incredible. After our tutor
session we spent the afternoon doing
cultural activities. We danced, made
pysanky, painted, went to concerts, and
explored the beautiful city of Ternopil.
There were three excursions built into
the program. We went to the Carpathian
Mountains, Khotyn and Kamanets, and
Lviv. Being immersed in the Ukrainian
culture has definitely helped me pick up
the language quite quickly.
This trip exceeded all my goals and
expectations. I went into the program not
really knowing what to expect and I left
with a grasp on the Ukrainian language,
some beautiful friends from Ukraine,
and some wonderful memories that I will
cherish forever.
I am so grateful that I had the opportunity
to go to Ukraine and I will continue to
keep in touch with the people I met there.
I would honestly go back in a heartbeat
and I sincerely hope I can participate in
the program next year. As I settle back in
at home I continue to speak Ukrainian with
my family. I go to a bilingual church every
Sunday. I look forward to going back to
Ukrainian dancing with Pavlychenko
Folklorique Ensemble. Most of all, I am
excited to share the Ukrainian culture
with my friends and family and someday
my students.
Sincerely,
Kalyn Harasymchuk
In May 2011, I was fortunate to travel to
Ukraine and study at the Kyiv-Mohyla
Institute. Every morning we attended classes
studying Ukrainian culture, language, and
mythology. Our afternoons were filled with
wonderful excursions to historical sites such
St. Sophia Cathedral, the Golden Gates, and
Andriivskyj descent, to name a few. Each day
and night allowed us to experience living
in Ukraine, which initially was quite an eye
opening experience. On weekends, I was able
to travel to other parts of Ukraine, Lviv and
Krym. Besides the opportunity to enhance
my Ukrainian language skills, the most
memorable part of this trip was the emotional
connection I made with my cultural roots.
Sharing this experience with other Canadian
youth and building relations with youth
from Ukraine added to the emotion of the
experience. I send a heartfelt thank you to the
Shevchenko Foundation for giving me the
opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream.
RECORDINGS
On behalf of the Spivohrai Ukrainian
Children’s Vocal Ensemble, I would like to
express our very sincere appreciation to the
Shevchenko Foundation for awarding us
the grant of $1000 to produce our first CD
Перші Kроки—First Steps.
Spivohrai was established in 2010 with the
aim of providing boys and girls, ages 5–15,
with an opportunity to maintain, develop
and share their Ukrainian cultural identity
through the medium of song. The group
performs regularly at many community
functions throughout the year, including
Vesna Festival, Ukrainian Day in the Park
and Folk Fest, just to mention a few.
Last year, thanks in large measure to
support from the Taras Shevchenko
Foundation, Spivohari recorded a CD of
thirteen Ukrainian folk and ‘obriadovi’
songs, as well as a few ‘rizdvizni koliadky’.
The project was a wonderful opportunity
for our young singers to develop a product
that both showcases their heritage and
talents and enables these to be shared
in the broader community.
We hope this CD will serve to inspire not
only other young singers and also all
members of our community.
Respectfully,
The generous support of the Shevchenko
Foundation helped the Ukrainian Art
Song Project (UASP) take significant steps
in 2011 toward its goal of leaving a major
legacy to the world of music by collecting,
documenting and recording some 1100
art songs by Ukrainian composers. Following
up on its 2010 launch of professionally
recorded CD packages of 221 art songs of
Mykola Lysenko, Yakiv Stepovyi and Kyrylo
Stetsenko, the UASP embarked upon the
documentation of the 205 art songs of
Ukraine’s Galician composers. During the
summer of 2011, international opera star
Pavlo Hunka, founder of the UASP, joined
with producer Roman Hurko and a cast of
Canadian opera stars and pianists at Glenn
Gould Studio in Toronto to record 80 of
the Galician treasures by Denys Sichynsky,
Vasyl Barvinsky, Stanyslav Liudkevych and
Stefania Turkewich. The works of Turkewich,
Ukraine’s first female composer, were
largely unknown until now, and they
astounded the Canadian musicians
with their imaginative, innovative and
beautifully melodic ideas. The UASP
Sibelius team—a group of students of
composition attending at the Royal
Academy of Music, the Royal College
of Music and the Guildhall of Music in
London set about transcribing Turkewich’s
songs into the Sibelius computer music
programme which transposes them into any
key in which an artist wishes to sing. The
programme also prepares each song to be
published on the UASP web site
(www.uasp.ca), where a library of
Ukrainian art songs is in the making,
to be accessed for study and performance,
free of charge, by musicians and music
lovers throughout the world. And in
recognition of the importance of the
Ukrainian art song, Pavlo Hunka was
invited to perform Lysenko’s song cycle,
A Poet’s Love, at the Passau Classical Music
Festival on July 11, 2012 in Germany, where
the art song was born. The volunteers of
the UASP extend their sincere gratitude
to the Shevchenko Foundation and its
visionary donors.
Zhyto would like to formally thank
the Shevchenko Foundation for their
financial support of our upcoming album.
Preservation of the Ukrainian Canadian
culture, specifically music, is important
to the members of Zhyto and it is because
of generous support that we are able to
go ahead with such projects. It is not easy
for a volunteer group to find the time and
resources to undertake a project such as an
album. With the Shevchenko Foundation’s
grant programs, we will be able to realize
our dream of putting out an album, for our
own benefit but more importantly for the
benefit of the Ukrainian Canadian musical
culture as a whole.
by the Shevchenko Foundation for the Choir’s Season of Song
began with a concert in November celebrating 120 years of
will end its concert season in April 2012, with a program of
I wish to thank the Shevchenko Foundation for their generous support
in making the documentary film about Ukrainian Canadian university
volunteers and their journey while working with orphaned children in
Ukraine. This film outlines how volunteerism is at the heart of a strong
and vibrant community, and captures the positive impact for change
that can be made on those who are most vulnerable and in need of
support. I look forward to sharing their story with you.
DRAMAS/
MUSICALS
Pleiades Theatre
Toronto, Luba, Simply Luba
$7,000
Some goals are accomplished quickly; others
take longer. Telling the personal story of
Luba Goy’s life took more than 25 years and
started in a casual conversation at Expo 86
in Vancouver.
It was during a break in a rather strenuous
performance schedule for my production,
Just A Kommedia, that Luba and I were
chatting about the very theme of that play—
growing up as Ukrainian Canadians. As
she was describing the rather unique
circumstances of her life, it struck me that
here were the makings of a fascinating
biography that should be told as a drama.
And so began our commitment to each other
that someday—as long as it would take—
we would together fashion into a one-woman
show the fascinating account of her life as an
immigrant arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax with
her Ukrainian parents, and then her career
as a Canadian comedienne known from
coast to coast. This, we determined early,
would not exclusively be a comedy, but rather
a blending of the actual incidents—
touching as often as amusing—from Luba’s
life, told in a non-chronological style to
keep its audiences watching attentively as an
outstanding actress exercised her craft.
Over the years, whenever we would see each
other at a party, or talk as friends on the
telephone, there was always a reaffirmation
of our goal. But as long as Luba’s television
and stage work with Royal Canadian Air
Farce and her personal appearances here and
there were uppermost in her commitments,
our goal simply had to wait. Only when
Air Farce announced its retirement from
CBC-TV did the door open, giving us both
an opportunity to begin serious planning
for what would eventually become
Luba, Simply Luba.
Finding the funding for a full production
was another part of the process, and that’s
where I especially welcomed the support
of organizations like the Shevchenko
Foundation and of individuals who, like
me, had grown up in the traditions of the
Ukrainian home and culture.
Here, too, it took time, but eventually the
dollars mounted, and a colleague Toronto
theatre company, Pleiades Theatre, where
I also serve as Producer, joined Red Boots
to give us the structure and the team to
mount our play.
For our promotional materials, Natalka
Husar, created what one might describe
as an exclusive, distinctive and matchless
“vinok” that only Ms. Goy herself could
wear. Incorporating the musical
accompaniment to complement the
show’s drama was the task of our
master bandurist, Victor Mishalow, whom
I decided to set behind an on-stage screen.
Recruiting the internationally celebrated
designer, Doug Paraschuk, another
Winnipegger of Ukrainian heritage, meant
that I had a colleague who understood
how to translate every nuance of the story
into appropriate visual settings for our
audiences.
And so, we reached our goal and our first,
live audience on May 7 at the Berkeley
Street Theatre in downtown Toronto.
The publicity promised a look into the
hilarious heart, passionate soul and
poignant story of Canada’s beloved
comedienne; the marketing naturally
included the city’s Ukrainian-Canadian
population, and they didn’t let us down!
Looking back, I feel rather proud of what
we all accomplished. It seems to me that
Ukrainian Canadian creativity has
blossomed rather beautifully in the visual,
musical, dance and literary arts but in the
field I particularly hold dear, theatre,
contributions are not especially strong.
Here’s hoping our telling this story of one
woman’s life contributes to this scarcity,
particularly because Luba’s personal
journey can touch the hearts of millions of
other Canadians who are not of Ukrainian
roots but who can still identify with an
immigrant child clinging to simple wishes
upon landing on this new shore: peace, not
war; safety, not terror.
Now, the challenge before us is taking
this show on the road. Stand by, Canada,
because Luba, Simply Luba may just be
coming to a theatre near you, and sooner
than 25 years.
I am writing to describe my experiences in
the Holodomor, funded by the Shevchenko
enlightening and educational. The
instructors, Drs. Hlynka and Cap shared a
diverse and in-depth account of both events,
from both pedagogical and informational
perspectives. Instructors were clear and
elaborate, drawing on vast personal
experiences as well as a well-researched
knowledge base. As a teacher in the
Ukrainian-Bilingual program, I certainly
appreciated the content of the course itself,
not to mention the approach as a classroom
history. The presenters organized by the
instructors were passionate and articulate
in their individual fields, only adding to the
Institute’s appeal. I feel that the strongest
aspect of the Institute was the appeal to
students outside the greater Ukrainian
community, be they MEd students, PBDE
students or PhD scholars. Increasing the
awareness and knowledge of the greater
public only strengthens the ability of our
and move forward. Thank you so much to
the Shevchenko Foundation for its generous
the future further educational initiatives
can be considered as well.
THE 2012
KOBZAR LITERARY AWARD
Honours Canadian authors in its Fourth Biennial Awarding
The Ukrainian and Canadian literary community came together
for the 4th biennial awarding in Toronto to celebrate Canadian
authors who immortalize Ukrainian Canadian themes in their
meritus literary works. Held on March 1 at the Palais Royale located
on Toronto’s Lakeshore Blvd., the Kobzar Literary Award 2012
Ceremony and Dinner was sold-out. Fifty five per cent of attendees
were returning for the fourth time, demonstrating loyal support for
the literary arts.
The finalists for the 2012 Kobzar Literary Award were: Larissa
Andrusyshyn (poetry), Mammoth, DC Books, Montreal, 2010;
Myrna Kostash (non-fiction), Prodigal Daughter: A Journey to
Byzantium, University of Alberta Press, Edmonton, 2010;
Shandi Mitchell (fiction novel), Under This Unbroken Sky,
Penguin, Toronto, 2009; Myroslav Shkandrij (literary analysis),
Jews in Ukrainian Literature: Representation and Identity, Yale
University Press, London, 2009; and Rhea Tregebov (fiction novel),
The Knife Sharpener’s Bell, Coteau Books, Regina, 2009.
Co-Masters of Ceremonies actor/producer Fred Keating and actor/
director Andrey Tarasiuk together orchestrated an extraordinary
award program, with musical interludes provided by Alexander
(Sasha) Boychouk. Between dinner courses, the audience listened
to readings by the 2012 finalists from passages in their respective
short-listed books which continually amaze the audience with
their authenticity.
“Appealing to the listener’s imagination of the mind, the upfront
telling of one’s story made it enticing for the audience to acquire
and read each author’s book from cover-to-cover.” (John Pidkowych,
The New Pathway)
In his greetings, Shevchenko Foundation President Andrij
Hladyshevsky emphasized that literature by and about Ukrainians
in Canada is in fact Canada’s own literature. Further, to everyone’s
delight, Mr. Hladyshevsky announced that the Shevchenko Board
of Directors had agreed to provide remuneration to each shortlisted
finalist with $1,000 in addition to the Kobzar Award prize of
$25,000; of which $5,000 is shared with the publisher to promote
the winning work.
| 33

34 |
The 2012 Award’s five short-listed authors who best presented
the theme with literary merit through fiction, non-fiction,
poetry, and well-documented research were chosen and
deemed worthy by an esteemed adjudication panel of the
writers’ peers: Denise Chong; Nino Ricci; M.G. Vassanji; and
Randal Maggs, also the 2010 Kobzar Literary Award winner
for Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems (Brick, 2004). Renowned
Canadian author Nino Ricci, joined by fellow Honorary
Patron Joy Kogawa, announced the 2012 Kobzar Literary
Award winner: Shandi Mitchell for her fiction novel Under
This Unbroken Sky, a narrative that “honours the ancestry of
many Canadian Ukrainians,” whose “memorable characters
valiantly face betrayal and every hardship that prairie life
renders in their search for a better life.”
Among special guests present at the Awards event were
Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship & Immigration Mr. Charles
Sousa; Antanas Sileika, Artistic Director, Humber School for
Writers; Geoffrey Taylor, Director of Authors at Harbourfront
Centre as well as authors Dr. Marusia Bociurkiw, Richard
Truhlar and filmmaker Orest Sushko.
“Recognized by Andrew Hladyshevsky and acknowledged by
applause from attendees, the success of the 2012 Kobzar Literary
Award event was due, in part, to the tireless work by Dr. Christine
Turkewych, Literary Arts Director, who encourages all Canadian
writers to keep writing and all of us to keep reading books on
Ukrainian Canadian themes. Without a readership/market,
Canadian publishers will not accept Ukrainian Canadian
themed manuscripts. Of course, no appreciation for success
would be complete without the recognition of the dedicated hard
work by the Award Ceremony Committee with Chair, Mrs. Alla
Shklar, and seventeen professional “literati with white roses”:
Irene Bilaniuk; Odarka Chudoba; Sonia Holiad; Irene Hordienko;
Dr. Christine Kowalsky; Winn Kuplowsky; Oksana Kuryliw;
Nadia Luciw; Daria Olynyk; Olesia Romanko; Liijanna Shklar-
Kushnirenko; Sonia Solomon; Lesia Stefaniw; Zenia Turkewych-
Miner; Krystina Waler; Karen Yarmol-Franko; and Oksana
Zakydalsky.” (John Pidkowych, The New Pathway)
The Foundation extends its gratitude to the event’s corporate
sponsors for their generous support of the Kobzar Literary
Award: Ian Ihnatowycz and Dr. Marta Witer; the Temerty
Family Foundation; Mitchell, Bardyn & Zalucky LLP,
Buduchnist Charitable Foundation, Ukrainian Credit Union
Ltd., as well as donors Mr. & Mrs. Erast Huculak, Eugene
and Renata Roman from Rosewood Estates, John Warburg,
Turner & Porter Funeral Directors, and Nell Nakonecszny
from Winnipeg. All proceeds from the award ceremony event
are directed to the Kobzar Literary Awards Endowment Fund
which supports full tuition scholarships at the annual Humber
College Writers’ Workshop in Toronto. These scholarships
assist novice Canadian writers in completing their manuscripts
for publication.
“I believe that this Kobzar award enables our Ukrainian roots,
heritage, culture, experiences and essence to be communicated
through the literary word. Many years ago, I clearly remember
reading references to Ukrainians in the novels of Margaret
Laurence and the effect that reading those words had on me. As
a Ukrainian, seeing and reading these references provided visual
proof that an established Canadian author had noticed and been
affected by the Ukrainian experience. ....There is a vast collage of
accumulated experiences which offers writers a huge palette of
opportunities to incorporate in their work. .......Supporting this
award and raising awareness about it, within both the Ukrainian
and Canadian communities, needs to be translated into a
commitment which results in action on both a personal and
organizational level. We all need to learn about, support and
promote the Kobzar Literary Award in order to foster, maintain
and promote the vast and profound legacy that Ukrainians
have contributed to our chosen land, Canada.”
CANADIAN FIRST WORLD WAR
INTERNMENT
RECOGNITION FUND
Following several months of negotiations
between the Federal Government of Canada
and the Ukrainian Canadian community,
as represented by the Ukrainian Canadian
Civil Liberties Association (UCCLA), the
Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras
Shevchenko (UCFTS), and the Ukrainian
Canadian Congress (UCC), a $10 million
endowment fund known as the “Canadian
First World War Internment Recognition
Fund” (CFWWIRF) was established to
commemorate and educate Canadians
about Canada’s first national internment
operations of 1914 to 1920.
The agreed terms of the
endowment were confirmed
during a signing ceremony
held on May 9, 2008 at
the Stanley Barracks in
Toronto, Ontario at which
the Federal Government
was represented by Hon.
Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship,
Immigration, and Multiculturalism, and
the Ukrainian Canadian community was
represented by Mr. Andrew Hladyshevsky
Q.C. (UCFTS), Mr. Paul Grod (UCC), and
Dr. Lubomyr Luciuk (UCCLA).
The CFWWIRF is designated for the
support of projects to commemorate and
recognize the experiences of ethno-cultural
communities affected by the First World
War Internment. Only the interest earned
on the $10 million is used to fulfill the
objective of the Fund.
The Endowment Council for the fiscal
year of 2011–2012 was comprised of Ivan
T. Grbešić as Chair; Andrew Hladyshevsky,
Q.C. as representative of the Ukrainian
Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko;
Lubomyr Luciuk as representative of the
Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties
Association; Olya Grod as representative
of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress;
Christopher Adam as representative of
the Canadian Hungary Educational
Foundation; Diane Dragasevich as
representative of the Serbian National
Shield Society of Canada; and Ted Sosiak
as representative of the internee
descendants. The Endowment Council
held nine teleconferences and one meeting
in Toronto, Ontario.
As Chair of the Endowment Council of
the Canadian First World War Internment
Recognition Fund (CFWWIRF), I am
pleased to present an update of the ongoing
activities of the Endowment Council.
Over this last fiscal year (2011–2012),
we worked ardently in carrying out the
objective of the CFWWIRF. We
held a total of ten formal meetings
of the Endowment Council (nine
via conference calls and one in
person in Toronto), as a result of
which 14 grants were awarded,
totaling $290,400. Since the
inception of the CFWWIRF, the
Endowment Council has awarded
$727,807 in grants, with another $554,529
approved for distribution between 2012 and
2015. The approved grants cover historical
and artistic exhibits, books and publications,
commemorative events, internee cemeteries,
films, research projects, and national
educational curriculum strategies.
Several grant projects came to fruition
across Canada during 2011–2012, including:
• in British Columbia, the unveiling of
the first internment mural “Shadows of
the Past” by artist Betty Kovacic in
Prince George;
• in Alberta, the launch of the first
internment resource book for high school
students “Prisoners of Prejudice” written
by the Edmonton Public Centre for
Education and distributed to every
high school in Alberta;
• in Ontario, the restoration of the
cemetery grounds (including the
restoration of the internee-built monument
and replacement of all cemetery markers)
and the re-consecration of the Kapuskasing
Cemetery spearheaded by the Ron Morel
Memorial Museum;
• in Ontario, the performance of “The
Letter” by the Verkhovyna Ukrainian
Song and Dance Ensemble of Edmonton
at the Toronto Ukrainian Festival; and
• in Quebec, the official opening of the
Camp Spirit Lake Corporation Internment
Interpretive Centre in La Ferme, near
Amos, which is the product of the largest
grant approved and funded by the
Endowment Council.
Members of the Endowment Council also
participated in face-to-face meetings and
conference calls as part of a Parks Canada
exhibit review committee in making
recommendations to Parks Canada in
connection with its development of a new
interpretive facility adjacent to the Cave and
Basin National Historic Site of Canada in
Banff National Park, a new exhibit at Fort
Henry National Historic Site of Canada in
Kingston, and the installation of a panel
in an existing POW exhibit at the Halifax
Citadel National Historic Site of Canada,
all sites where internment occurred.
Having been privileged to serve as a past
representative of the Croatian-Canadian
community on the Endowment Council and
now as its Chair, I have had the opportunity
to witness, and be impressed by, the work
and dedication of the various grant recipients
and the commitment and expertise of the
members of the Endowment Council. We
continue to convey through stories and
photographs the essence of the projects
that will make a significant contribution
to the commemoration and the education
of Canadians concerning, Canada’s first
national internment operations of 1914 to
1920, while ensuring that this tragic chapter
from our past is accurately reflected in our
Canadian history.
Prejudice
The Canadian First World War Internment
Recognition Fund (CFWWIRF) and the
Edmonton Public School District No. 7
(EPS) held the launch of the student resource
booklet Prisoners of Prejudice on Friday,
October 7, 2011 at the Edmonton Public
Schools Centre for Education in Edmonton,
Alberta. This student resource, initiated by
the Descendants of Ukrainian Canadian
Internee Victims Association (DUCIVA),
is an account of Canada’s first national
internment operations of 1914 to 1920.
as enemy aliens, the majority being Ukrainian
from Montreal’s St. Michael’s Ukrainian
Catholic Church from which 60 families
were taken. The historical materials collected
in this centre document the experiences
of entire families who found themselves
surrounded by a barbed wire fence.
The Interpretive Centre has been over twelve
years in the making. Within the last four
years, the project has made
remarkable headway, spearheaded
by James Slobodian of
Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. In
2007, the Corporation, with
the co-operation of church
authorities, bought the La
Ferme Church in order to
establish the historic Centre.
Since 1999, archeological
excavations have been taking
place on the former site of
the internment camp, which
was built during the First
World War at the beginning
of the colonization of the Abitibi region in
Northern Quebec.
This project is the largest grant approved
and funded by the Endowment Council of
the Canadian First World War Internment
Recognition Fund.
Opening the event was Andrew Hladyshevsky,
Q.C., Vice-Chair of the Endowment Council
of the CFWWIRF, who was instrumental
in bringing this project to fruition by
working closely with Edmonton Public
Schools and ensuring that this student
resource was completed and distributed
to all high schools in Alberta.
Kapuskasing Internee
Cemetery
The Town of Kapuskasing received a grant
from the Canadian First World War Internment
Recognition Fund (CFWWIRF) to replace
the 28 cemetery markers with granite headstones
of those internees who died while
interned at the Kapuskasing Internment
Camp during Canada’s first national
internment operations of 1914 to 1920.
The re-consecration ceremony took place
on October 13, 2011, completing the two
year project to restore the internee cemetery
monument that was built by the internees in
1917 and to replace the aging cemetery
markers with granite headstones.
On June 3, 2011, the Saskatchewan Friends of the Shevchenko Foundation –
Saskatoon Chapter sponsored their 14th annual event in Saskatoon to benefit
the Foundation. Just over 100 donors and guests were in attendance at Holy
Cross High School for a fundraising and donor appreciation reception.
MC Oksana Prokopchuk-Gauk guided the evening program,
introducing special guests and entertainers. The audience was
treated to recitations by young students Veronica Babii and Richard
Kricsfalusy, special selections by songstress Theresa Sokyrka, and
creative performances by dance groups Pavlychenko Folklorique
Ensemble and Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble.
Sonia Mysak, chair of the Saskatoon Friends of the Shevchenko
Foundation, welcomed old and new friends; national president
of the Shevchenko Foundation Andriy Hladyshevsky, of Edmonton;
executive director Lesia Szwaluk, of Winnipeg; outgoing development
Andriy Hladyshevsky remarked on our extraordinary Ukrainian
community of volunteers and donors giving back for the love of
spirit of culture. He reflected on the emotional evening and how,
on the 150th anniversary of his death, we remain inspired by
Taras Shevchenko. First donors to the Foundation did not know
that in 50 years there would still be young children inspired to lift
their eyes to the Lord as Shevchenko himself did as a boy. Yet, the
Foundation founders somehow knew with all of their hearts that
with the basis of financial support, someone would indeed be here
enabling our future.
Supporters of the 2011 event raised $ 7,190.00 for the capital fund.
Each March, the Shevchenko Foundation
Oksana Zhelisko
Classically trained in Eastern
Europe, Oksana began her
career as an artist in L’viv,
Ukraine. Oksana entered
the Ivan Trush College of
Decorative Arts in 1996.
There, she studied all aspects of art and
decided to make painting, especially of
murals, her specialty.
In 2001 she held her first solo exhibition at
the L’viv University of Ivan Franko. It was in
preparing her works for this show that she
realized she had a love for the medium of
oil. She finds that the truest hues are to be
found in this medium due to its prolonged
drying time and its ease in mixing. She
finds it best to begin her work, not on a
crisp, blank canvas, but on one that has
been coloured, and or stained to allow her
chosen medium to release its inner beauty
and charm.
Although aptly able to capture any image with an artist’s eyes,
Oksana’s work as of late has revolved around the theme of woman
in various stages, poses, and emotions. She equates her disdain of
starting on a blank canvas to that of simply painting woman as an
exercise in figure. In her view, woman is neither crisp nor blank, but
KOBZAR FELLOWSHIP
RECEPTION
Shevchenko Foundation’s Kobzar
Fellowship Reception in Ottawa was
held at the National Arts Centre on the
afternoon of Sunday March 4, 2012.
Fifty invited guests participated in this
afternoon of fellowship and celebration
of our Ukrainian-Canadian culture and
heritage, highlighted with the melodic voices
of Ottawa’s own AKORD Male Chorus.
Irena Bell MC’d the afternoon beginning
with an introduction of the Shevchenko
Foundation’s history and an overview of
the important work the Foundation does
in our community. Foundation President
Andriy Hladyshevsky, Q.C., moved those in
attendance with his heartfelt speech about
our immigrant ancestors who worked
faithfully and tirelessly to preserve their
culture and heritage in their new country
and of their vision almost 50 years ago
when the foundation was first formed.
Following their performance, the AKORD
Chorus presented the foundation with a
cheque for $1,515 which came from the
proceeds of their annual Koliada. This
annual donation has become a tradition
for the choir as a way of giving back to the
community which has supported them for
many years and continues to do so through
grants from the Shevchenko Foundation.
The highlight of the afternoon was the
induction of Irena Bell and Boris Gengalo to
the Kobzar Fellowship circle. Both Irena
and Boris are active members of the
Ukrainian Canadian community in Ottawa
and both believe deeply in the mission and
vision of the Shevchenko Foundation. As
new Fellows, both were congratulated and
given a special Shevchenko Foundation pin
which is awarded to those who have made
the commitment to include the Shevchenko
Foundation in their estate plans.
The informal part of the afternoon
continued with those present sharing
in conversation and fellowship. A special
thank you to Chrystyna Chudczak who
captured much of the afternoon in
these photographs.
The first half of 2012 was a tale
of two quarters; the first quarter
represented the strongest start
for the U.S. stock market since
1998, with Japan turning in
its best first quarter gains in
twenty-four years. This was
largely driven by a reduction
of fears about Europe, as well
as stronger economic data in
the U.S.
The second quarter gave many
of those gains back as the capital markets became
increasingly volatile as Europe’s debt crisis escalated
once again and questions of a slowdown in China
and the fragility of the recovery in the U.S. all
continue to weigh on the markets. In this volatile
environment, being nimble and tactical becomes
all the more important.
The Foundation continues to focus on:
• Maintaining secure liquid funds to cover expenses
and provide cash-flow for granting needs.
• Determining the appropriate long-term allocation
of assets between equities and fixed income.
• Regardless of the economic cycle, the state of the
economy or short-term market volatility — stick
to the agreed upon investment parameters, barring
a change in the Foundation’s circumstances.
YEAR END REVIEW:
2012 AND BEYOND
From the Chair of the Investment Committee
• Maintaining a broadly diversified portfolio,
allocating investments between asset classes,
by geography, sectors and by industry.
• Searching for cash flow from investments. In an
uncertain environment with respect to economic
growth and equity returns, we continue to focus
on the yield from investments. The cash-flows
from our fixed income and dividend paying
equities continue to make sense to us in an
effort to get “paid” while we wait for growth.
We believe that we should continue to have significant
exposure to Canadian securities and to the Canadian
dollar. However, through our portfolio managers,
we carefully continue to systematically increase our
exposure to U.S. and international equities in both
our long-only equity portfolios as well as in our
long-short alternative strategies.
The Investment Committee continues to have
a strong conviction that we can achieve the
Foundation’s objectives: capital preservation, capital
appreciation, reliable income generation and positive
absolute returns for the Foundation’s investments.
IN MEMORY
OF
MYKOLA SUPRUN
1923 – 2011
Many Ukrainian stories are sad stories. Mykola Suprun’s life story
is a Ukrainian story.
He was born on 17 December 1923 in Soviet Ukraine, into a family
branded by Communists as “seredniaky” or middle-class peasants.
Their land was confiscated. Mykola’s father, Petro, resisted,
insisting “it is better to die a free man in Ukraine than to be a
slave in one’s own home.” For that defiance he was targeted by the
NKVD, the secret police, and disappeared becoming one of the
many millions of victims of Communism.
Mykola’s mother Stepania was left to care for
her children alone, amid a growing hunger.
She entrusted 10 year old Mykola with taking
his two brothers, Sashko and Vasyl, to an
orphanage, where she hoped they might survive
the Great Famine, the Holodomor. When
it was discovered that they were
“enemies of the people” the boys were
expelled and returned home only to find their
mother bed-ridden. Mykola foraged
in the nearby woods for anything edible
but it was not enough. Sashko and Vasyl
starved to death.
Mykola was forced to work on a collective farm, made to run
behind the wagon that daily took workers into the fields, the
privilege of getting a ride reserved for those who complied with
the new regime. Decades later, in Canada, one of the children
who rode the wagon wound up living across the street from
Mykola. Instead of holding a grudge or trying to settle old scores,
he forgave that man.
When Nazi Germany invaded the USSR, in late June 1941, the
Red Army weapons depot near his village was blown up. Mykola
barely had time to run home and rescue his baby niece, Halya.
Later, when the family cut trees to repair their damaged home the
extra weight they were carting set off a landmine, killing Mykola’s
sister, Maria. All he could find was her arm. In the spring of 1942
he recovered the rest of her remains, and interred his sister a
second time.
The tide of war turned against Germany and Mykola became a
slave labourer in the Third Reich, clearing the rubble left after
Allied bombings. At war’s end he found himself in the British Zone of
Occupied Germany, at a Displaced Persons camp in Kiel. Although a
“Soviet citizen” and liable to repatriation to the USSR, Mykola risked his
own freedom to sneak into the Soviet Zone and escort other Ukrainians
to the West. In July 1947 he found asylum in Canada, working for a pulp
and paper company. After completing his two years of work, so paying for
his passage, he moved to Winnipeg. There he met his future wife, Iwanna
(Jean) Chomischak, with whom he would raise a family of six.
Instead of Saturday morning cartoons, the children were taken to
Ukrainian school and the Ukrainian Youth Association (SUM). On
Sundays they attended the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral
where, from 1960, he was a parishoner. The family donned their embroidered
shirts and blouses and in 1961 joined thousands of Ukrainian Canadians
in unveiling the Taras Shevchenko monument on the grounds of the
Manitoba Legislature. He often cited the words of Ukraine’s national
bard: “only in one’s house does one have truth, strength and freedom.”
Sadness returned to Mykola’s life when in 1970 his teenage son died in
an unfortunate accident. Like Abraham of the Old Testament, Mykola
accepted this tragedy as the will of God. Soon thereafter, he learned that
his mother, separated from him by the Iron Curtain, had survived, and
was being looked after by his niece, Halya.
For years Mykola stomached the denial of the horrors he survived as a
young boy, but thanks to the efforts of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress,
in 1984 he attended the unveiling of the Holodomor Memorial at Winnipeg’s
City Hall. He wore the lapel pin reproduction on his suit for the remainder
of his days.
Eventually, Iwanna and Mykola became grandparents. He grew
legendary tomatoes and even managed to cultivate an orange tree in his
Winnipeg home as an homage to the forest that saved him. In retirement,
he cared for his wife during her struggle with diabetes. She passed away
on 27 December 1996, aged 68. Mykola became a great-grandfather
without her.
He faced the onset of Alzheimer’s with courage, even though he was
slowly robbed of many memories. He never complained and as his body
was wracked he let his caregivers and family know that his spirit remained
well by offering a loving smile. He passed away, on 7 September 2011,
surrounded by family, knowing he was loved and will be remembered.
Although Ukrainian stories are sad, Mykola taught us that the best way to
get through the suffering that life brings to all is to do so with a smile.
MARIA (MAKALO) LUCIUK
1927 – 2012
Maria Makalo was born in 1927 in the
western Ukrainian village of Kurnyky.
She was only 16 when the Germans came,
transporting her to Bavaria, press-ganged
into the service of the Third Reich. She was
not alone. Millions of Ukrainians suffered
a similar fate. Many would not survive.
Being young and petite, Maria was not the
first choice of those selecting slaves for hard
labour. Paradoxically, that was lucky. For
when she was finally picked it was by a Bauer
(farmer) whose ailing wife and two children
needed help. So Maria worked mainly in
the kitchen, able to scrounge food and even
sneak some to the Polish POWs the farmer
held captive. Somehow her father, Stepan,
a First World War veteran of the Austro-
Hungarian army, and fluent in German,
learned where his daughter was. From
occupied Ukraine he posted letters of
encouragement, those few sheets of paper
becoming some of her most precious
possessions—for she would never see
him again.
Still a teenager when the Second World War
ended, in May 1945, Maria again found
herself among millions of people cast adrift,
political refugees unwilling to return to
Soviet-dominated eastern Europe. There
the Stalinist regime was brutally suppressing
Ukrainian nationalism, a counterinsurgency
campaign that continued
well into the 1950s. Maria’s father was a
member of the resistance. Captured by the
Communists, Stepan perished rather than
renounce the cause of Ukraine’s liberation.
His final resting place is unknown. The Iron
Curtain then severed Maria’s ties to her
mother, three brothers, and a sister, a chasm
un-breached until the Soviet empire fell
and Ukraine regained its rightful place in
Europe, almost a half century later.
Not able to go home, Maria instead found
sanctuary in the ‘Freiman Kasserne’
Displaced Persons camp, near Munich.
There she joined the Organization of
Ukrainian Nationalists, (OUNb), becoming
a trusted underground courier. It was a
dangerous time. Hundreds of thousands
of “Soviet citizens” were forcibly repatriated
to the USSR, there were political
assassinations, widespread criminality,
and a climate of fear, many believing a
Third World War was imminent. So most
DPs lived “on packed suitcases,” motivated
by a “compulsive need to return home,”
seeing themselves as the “second line” of
the liberation movement, determined to
husband their Diaspora’s resources until
they could get home. They believed that
would happen soon. They were mistaken.
Their exodus would last for decades.
Unbeknownst to her, Maria came under
surveillance. One day he stopped her, in
Munich’s famous ‘English Gardens.’ Fortunately,
the man who crossed her path was
another nationalist. His name was Danylo.
He became her unofficial escort and
bodyguard and, eventually, her husband,
rarely leaving Maria’s side until she died,
peacefully, in his arms, in their bed, in their
home, after more than six decades of
happily married life.
Resettled from post-war Europe to
Kingston, Ontario, in 1949, Maria and
Danylo found work, she at Hotel Dieu
Hospital, he at Brock Jewellers. At first they
lived in a Queen Street boarding house, on
the edge of Kingston’s immigrant and
working class “North End.” Wanting to start
a family they moved to 68 Nelson St.,
infusing their home with all things Ukrainian.
Anyone crossing that threshold immediately
entered what Maria and Danylo
remembered or imagined Ukraine should
be like, a welcoming and happy place. It
still is. When their children were born they
named them Lubomyr, “Lover of Peace,”
and Nadia, “Hope,” signalling what their
adopted homeland had given them—peace,
love, and hope.
In their early years in Canada Maria and
Danylo encountered many fellow citizens
who knew little, if anything, about Ukraine
or Ukrainians. She dedicated herself to
overcoming that ignorance. Maria taught
Ukrainian school, pushed her children to
study hard, was a leading member of
St Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish, a
founding and lifelong member of the Kingston
Branch of the Canadian League for the
Liberation of Ukraine,
helped establish the
Kingston and District
Folk Arts Council,
the Ukrainian Maky
Dance Ensemble, the
Ukrainian Canadian
Club of Kingston, and
was the heart and soul
of the “Lviv, Ukraine”
pavilion during Kingston’s annual “Folklore”
festival, for 42 years. Her commitment to
her culture and, in particular, to Ukrainian
embroidery and traditional cooking, were a
delight within her own hromada (community)
and for the many thousands of Kingstonians
she hosted over several decades. We will not
see the likes of her pyrohy (perogies) and
holubtsi (cabbage rolls) again. And yet,
while she always made sure people knew
she was a Ukrainian, and what that meant
to her, Maria was equally keen on learning
about the lives and cultures of everyone
she met, genuine in her advocacy of multiculturalism,
believing it to be a strong pillar
girding up Canada’s uniqueness as a society.
Maria and Danylo’s enduring support for
the cause of Ukrainian independence—for
many who knew them nothing but a quixotic
émigré dream—was vindicated when the
USSR collapsed, in 1991. And, at almost the
same time, they became grandparents, who
savoured watching their granddaughter,
Kassandra, become a woman and a young
scholar of modern Ukraine’s history. For
Baba and Dido (grandmother and grandfather)
there could be no more satisfying
legacy.
On the evening before she died Maria spoke
her last words, in Ukrainian: “Goodnight,
my children.” Her family was with her when
she passed on February 10, 2012. She was
calm and unafraid. Just like the Mary
whose name she bore Maria had witnessed
appalling suffering in her lifetime yet
remained a woman of faith. Parting with
motherly words of comfort she finally went
home, full of grace, to be with God, reminding
us of the psalmist’s words: “for He grants
sleep to those He loves.”
