DEAR READERS….
What happened to good manners and common
sense? I’ve seen numerous posts recently with
some negative commentary on a whole host of
subject ranging from who won what, who judged
what, who shouldn’t have won or qualified and
the list goes on.
When we have real life issues such as
Manchester and Grenfell Towers taking place and
impacting either directly or indirectly on our lives, does it not somewhat put
the importance of winning a piece of ribbon and a friendship in the shade?
The advent of social media has changed the way people interact and it has
helped to bring some really important issues to the fore but can’t people
just try and be nice or keep it to the inner circle of friends, away from a
keyboard.
As we reach the half way point of the year, the longest day behind us
already, Equestrian Life is turning it’s attention to some changes and by the
end of the year these will be in place. Before then of course we are keeping
a close eye on locals qualifying for HOYS and look forward to hearing
all the results from the Royal International at the end of the month. The
Equestrian Life Championships follow shortly after – an amended format
and entries are starting to pick up, just need the weather to behave and it’s
looking like a good weekend ahead.
Pony Club
girls in the
Pink!
Two Cumberland Farmers’
Hunt (South) Branch of The
Pony Club (CFHS) Members
have represented Northern
England at the highest level
in the last month. Alex
Airey (13) and Sarah Hale
(14) were selected to be
part of a Northern England
Tetrathlon Team, with
their eye-catching pink
team livery, at the Junior
Regional Competition
at Moreton Morrell in
Warwickshire. Teams from
all over England, Scotland,
Ireland and Wales compete
annually at this event, and
whilst the stakes are high,
there is strong camaraderie
amongst the competitors,
with many new
friendships
forged.
Tetrathlon is
a demanding
sport comprising
shooting, crosscountry
running,
swimming and
cross-country
riding. It proved
to be a tough
competition
with a tricky
Flash.
cross-country
course resulting
in only 26 clear rounds from
163 starters. Both Alex and
Sarah picked up a number
of penalties on the crosscountry
course, but strong
performances in the run
and the swim phases helped
their team into 9th position
out of 21 teams.
Alex Airey at Royal
Windsor Horse Show on
Sarah Hale and the aptly named
Splashy jumping into the water
at Moreton Morrell.
Alex also travelled to
the Royal Windsor Horse
Show in May for a similar
competition, but one where
cross-country riding is
replaced by arena jumping
over a mixture of show
jumps and working hunter
fences. Alex was 7th overall
at this event and
was in the 3rd
placed Northern
England Team.
Then girls are
coached in
shooting by
former CFHS
member John
Fletcher, and in
cross-country
riding by Treena
Lang and David
Wadge. Sarah
is a member
of Penrith
Swimming Club. Last
minute emergency shoeing
was provided by Dan Broad
(DipWCF) for Sarah’s pony
Splashy, who is kindly
loaned by former CFHS
Member Phoebe Williams-
Raising Money for
I Love Manchester
On Saturday 3rd June, North West Bloodhounds held a
charity ride, at Charity Farm in Wrightington, to raise
money for the I Love Manchester fund, following the Arena
attack on Monday 22nd May. Nici Aldridge from the North
West Bloodhounds team tells us about the event, and why
it was organised.
“Most of the North West Bloodhounds team either live
or work in Manchester, and have close ties to the city. We
all had connections to people at the concert - this was
an attack on our friends and family, and we wanted to do
something to show our support.
We had a show arranged for 3rd June, but shows are
expensive to run, so we quickly made the decision to cancel
the show and organise a fun ride instead. Fred and Andrew
Waring at Charity Farm donated the use of their facilities,
waiving their usual charges. The ride was also supported by
Northwest Medics, who provided first aid / paramedic cover
free of charge.
Over 50 riders joined us on the day, and following a
minute’s silence, they had an exciting time riding over
the cross country and working hunter fields at Charity
Farm and also the Gallops at Hesketh House, which we
incorporated into our ride by kind permission of Brian
Bromley. At the end of the ride, several riders then joined
in a thrilling “Chase Me Charlie” competition with a cash
prize of £150, won by Sara Moss Gibbons, presented on the
day by our Senior Master, Nigel Kamel.
To raise additional funds, our regular photographers,
Kim Yarwood, Angie Hudson, Audra Anderson and Nici
Aldridge, all agreed to make their photos available for
download and use, giving riders access to over 2000 photos
from the event for a single £5 donation to the fund.
In total over £1000 has been raised from the event, with
photo money still coming in this week. We are all very
grateful to those who supported our event and are thrilled
to have raised such a good total for the Manchester fund.”
The Queen visits Eland
Lodge Equestrian Centre
On Thursday 25th May, Her Majesty
The Queen visited Eland Lodge
Equestrian Centre to see the
exceptional equestrian facilities in
action. The private visit was conducted
within the Needwood Survey which is
part of The Duchy of Lancaster Estate
owned by Her Majesty The Queen as
The Duke of Lancaster.
Once arrived, Her Majesty, dressed
in royal blue, proceeded to the Royal
Viewing Platform. Among those
presented to The Queen were John
and Veronica Coupland of Eland Lodge
Equestrian.
Managing Director John Coupland
spoke about the visit “We are
extremely happy that Her Majesty
has made time in an incredibly busy
schedule to visit the Needwood Survey
and Eland Lodge in particular. The
whole country knows of Her Majesty’s
love of horses and we are thrilled to
have had the chance to show off the
equestrian centre we have created here
at Eland Lodge. We have commitment
to entry level riding and believe whole
heartedly in the development of the
next generation of riders through
training, competition and enjoyment
and it was a wonderful endorsement
of that belief to have Her Majesty
on site to watch four members of
the Pony Club demonstrating their
excellent skill on our Cross Country
course. It was a very special day for all
concerned!”.
From the viewing platform, The
Queen enjoyed the view over the
65 acre cross country course and
watched a small team of riders
tackling a number of fences and
combinations, including the
Newborough Leap, Dubarry Water
complex, the Dew Pond, the Broken
Bridge and the Log Stacks.
Riding the course were four local
Pony Club members: India Edwards
& Josie Coupland from the South
Staffordshire Hunt Branch of The
Pony Club, and Sally Ann Turkington
& Izzy Mead from the Meynell Hunt
Branch of The Pony Club. Once the
demonstration was complete, the
riders were presented to the Queen.
Izzy Mead, rider, said: “I was really
nervous but so excited to ride for The
Queen. All the horses were brilliant
and I’m really proud of my horse
Cracker! It was an amazing experience
to meet The Queen.”
Once the presentation was complete,
Her Majesty was driven through the
site to take in the on-site equestrian
& country store, livery yard and
4000m2 all weather show jumping and
dressage arena.
Hedgethorpe April Morning and
Tara Robinson aged 15 took the
you will get there!
ABOUT CAROLINE & ALISON
Stablelog has been developed by Caroline Pritchard-Law and Alison O’ Connor
both keen riders and members of Bicester Riding Club. Caroline and Alison met
through the riding club, and became part of a dressage team called The Bicester
Bonkers Birds. Last year the team were lucky enough to win the TeamQuest
National Championships. This win inspired Caroline and Alison to create a tool to
help themselves and others to achieve their goals.
“Winning the championships was a dream come true and made us realise that
you can achieve anything if you focus and train hard. The new website www.
stablelog.com helps riders of all abilities to plan what they want to achieve,
schedule training and competitions and then monitor progress. We genuinely
hope that stablelog.com will help horse riders like us to improve and achieve
their aims.”
Mellor Is SCT’s First
Enterprise Award Winner
Elizabeth Mellor is the
first winner of Stubbing
Court Training Ltd (SCT)’s
Enterprise Award, which
was founded to reward
apprentices who “go the
extra mile” in helping
the businesses in which
they are employed to be
successful. The award was
supported by the British
Equestrian Federation
(BEF).
Three of Chesterfield-based
training provider SCT’s
apprentices – Elizabeth,
April Brereton and Katie
Leech – were selected to
go forward for the final
judging of the Enterprise
Award by Sarah Armstrong,
performance director of
the BEF’s World Class
programme, at Chatsworth
International Horse Trials
on 14 May.
Sarah was highly impressed
by all three candidates,
but chose 18-year-old
Elizabeth, who is employed
by Hood Hill Farm livery
stables in Chapeltown,
Sheffield.
“All three had put a lot of
work into their submissions,
but Elizabeth’s shone. Her
thoughtfulness and very
thorough approach made
her a clear winner,” said
Sarah. “Overall, the quality
from a group of people
just starting out in the
workplace showed some
great ideas, a dedicated
approach to their work
and a clear passion for the
equestrian industry.”
Elizabeth’s prize is a place
on the British Equestrian
Federation’s prestigious
three-day “Business of
Equestrian” programme in
Newmarket in October. She
will receive training from
leading experts on running
an equestrian business,
including health and safety,
employment law, owner
relationships and contracts,
and managing staff and
performance.
Elizabeth said: “Winning
the SCT Enterprise Award
has given me so much more
confidence and self-esteem,
knowing that if I set my
mind to achieve something,
I can. It shows that hard
work pays off.
“My employer, Josie Gibbs,
was delighted to hear I had
won, and I hope to carry on
making her proud during
the time I work for her.”
Trafford Photography launch
their new ‘Fine Art Equine Studio’
To those in the
Equestrian Life
area, Trudy Trafford
Photography needs no
introduction; wonderful event
photographers, a busy family
business which also enlists the
talents of an extended team.
TIME FOR CHANGE
Whilst Trafford Photography
still enjoy covering events,
their real passion always has
been in the animal portraiture
side of photography. The great
British Weather has a bearing
on the outdoor shoots, lets
face it, who wants a photo
on their living room wall
looking like a drowned rat!
Trudy’s love of fine art equine
photography blossomed
from the location portraiture
sessions. Also, having a small
home studio where she often
photographs dogs, gave Trudy
the idea to do it on a bigger
scale for the horses.
The equine studio began a
number of years ago with a
mobile studio which they can
take out to yards but it’s very
dependent on the yard having
the right space, a nice looking
floor and a safe confined space
to do the shoot. This meant
that usually they would be
limited to head and shoulder
shots. It has taken Trafford
Photography a good few years
of development to work out
what was important for them
in an equine studio; obviously
of paramount importance
was the safety of the horse,
handler, assistants, the camera
and lighting equipment
and last but not least the
photographer! The other issue
they had was that they wanted
to have a continuous seamless
background in order to create
the full length high end fine
art images.
Although not officially
launched until the 14th July,
Trudy did have the pleasure
of photographing Jo Bednall’s
treasured event horse Zsan.
Here’s what Jo had to say
about the shoot. “I had been
looking for a photographer,
but I didn’t want ‘normal’
photos, I wanted quite an
‘arty’ shot. I found Trudy
via Facebook but I knew her
company from previous shows
with my daughter. I took
Zsan to the studio which was
very impressive. She let Zsan
get used to the lights and
the backdrop and Zsan turned
out to be a real poser and loved
being the centre of attention!
Trudy and Grace made the whole
experience such fun and never
rushed. The finished photos are
truly amazing and I cant thank
her enough”.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION
Trudy says “I am so excited to
be officially launching on Friday
14th July 2017, where we will
be offering special introductory
offers. We are based at Selston
‘Providing Solutions, not Problems’
RiderCise ® - Improving Riding Equilibrium and Rider Performance
As Riders, Owners and
Trainers, we all know the
importance of ensuring
that our horses are healthy,
happy, fit, conditioned, stress and
pain free and have tack which fits
for their discipline. What about the
rider?
All other sports, at any level, require
individuals to train meticulously, fuel
the body and treat muscular-skeletal
restrictions/imbalances. By doing this
they increase the chance of success
and decrease the risk of injuries. Why
is equestrianism different?
We often focus so much on our
horses that we forget to look at
ourselves, we are just as important.
Equestrianism is unique in that it
relies on the performance of both
horse and riders for equilibrium.
It is essential that riders are also
healthy, stress and pain free and
conditioned for the sport. Not only
to improve Riding Equilibrium and
reduce risk of injuries but so that
riding is thoroughly enjoyed.
If we are unconditioned or have
muscular-skeletal imbalances it can
hinder your horses ability
to perform.
Horses can feel your
imbalances, they feel your
tightness and restrictions,
they feel you slouching
when you’re tired, and
they feel you transferring
weight in the saddle when
your muscles work against
you. Even when you don’t
feel it yourself.
SOLUTIONS, NOT PROBLEMS
Riders notice or receive feedback that
they lean to a particular side, round
the shoulders, one hand is higher,
they collapse at the core or that one
leg sits differently and often, it is
not necessarily ‘bad riding’, it could
be muscular-skeletal restrictions/
imbalances that cause these issues.
16 July 2017 Equestrian Life
Unfortunately, changing posture/
position in the saddle is not always
as easy as just ‘sitting up straight/
tall’ or pushing your ‘heels down’- It
may be achieved short term, during
a lesson for example, but if the rider
has muscular-skeletal restrictions/
imbalances (symptoms) and/or the
rider is not ‘conditioned (causes) for
the range of movement and muscular
recruitment, it is not achievable long
term and forcing these ‘changes’
without addressing the cause(s) could
further inhibit the ability to perform
and the comfort to do so.
WHETHER YOU:
• Feel exhausted during a lesson
• Are not succeeding in your
discipline
• Feel sore and/or have pain
• Lean forward/backward or to the
side
• Have saddle issues
• Can’t pinpoint why your horse is
often sore or misaligned
We want to provide solutions, not
problems. We don’t want to just tell
you what’s wrong; we want to help
you fix it!
RiderCise® Therapy - Reviews,
assesses and treats any muscularskeletal
imbalances/weaknesses the
rider may have.
This is done through a riding
assessment, where your posture is
assessed, not your riding, and the
findings confirmed with a standing
postural assessment. Soft Tissue
Therapy is provided to the rider to
address any of the findings. The rider
also has the option to purchase an
Online Conditioning Programme.
RiderCise® Online Conditioning
Programmes – Designed specifically
to improve and condition the muscles
required for riding, delivered via
the RiderCise® Mobile App.
Riders have a range of options in
which Conditioning programme they
can choose from, whether it be ‘offthe-shelf’
or a ‘bespoke’ or ‘Athlete’
tailored programme. All programmes
are designed and proven to improve
Photizo
shows
the way!
Equine Sports Massage
therapist, Eleanor
Frost, has been
working with 15-year-old
Nottinghamshire event
rider Oli Jackson and his
talented pony Daydream
Fourteen (Dave to his
mates), since the Autumn
of 2015. Eleanor recently
accompanied them for
pre-event treatments
at the British Eventing
Charles Owen National
Pony Championship CIC*P
at Brand Hall on the 1-4th
June 2017.
Dave and his stable mates,
9-year-old Ace, 6 -year-old
Finn and 6-year-old Bobby
are all treated on a regular
basis and sometimes on
site at events pre and post
competition. Not only is
‘hands on massage’ therapy
utilised during sessions, but
also the Photizo Vetcare.
The Photizo (phototherapy)
is an effective treatment
tool due to its effects in
promoting natural healing
and aiding recovery.
Photizo is a unique pocketsized
device that offers
modern Phototherapy. It
combines pulsating red
and infra-red LED (light
emitting diode) light
in scientifically proven
30-second doses. Working
at a cellular level it
creates biological effects,
stimulating the production
of cellular energy (ATP)
required for regeneration
and subsequent healing.
The combination of
Eleanor providing a ‘hands
on’ holistic approach
within massage sessions
complements time set aside
to use Photizo. It leads to
increased blood and
lymph diameter as
the stimulated
blood circulation
increases the
removal of
debris from
areas where
an injury may
be manifesting,
whilst promoting
the inflow of
oxygen and nutrients,
Photizo assists in
correcting cell function and
reducing any inflammation
that may be present.
Massage combined with
Photizo is invaluable pre
and indeed post an event,
especially in the post cross
country phase when going
and terrain may be dubious
and jumping efforts are
intensified. Furthermore,
it is identified as a perfect
accompaniment post
treatment to retain cellular
activity and prolong the
therapeutic effects provided
by hands on work. This
assists at a maintenance
level to preserve Dave’s
performance ensuring he is
in peak condition.
As a maintenance regime
Photizo is so easy to use
as it does not require
protective eyewear, unlike
a laser, meaning its safe
and less complicated to use
than a laser.
Oli’s mum, Joy, uses
her Photizo in between
Eleanor’s visits on the
areas identified during her
massage sessions. Photizo
applied on areas requiring
ongoing therapeutic
work will help accelerate
recovery and prevent
any tight or sore regions
developing that could lead
to injury.
Thanks to Danetre
Health Products, the
team got to use the
Photizo Professional
Veterinary system, when
Oli and Dave competed
in their first 1* event at
Brand Hall in June. Both
Joy and Oli explained
“Dave certainly enjoyed the
Photizo and showed us how
relaxing it was by lowering
his head and neck, dozing,
yawning, licking and
chewing when we treated
him”.
More than 60% of the
horse’s bodyweight is
comprised of muscle and
the horse has over 700
skeletal muscles! Horses
in training inevitably
experience loading to
different anatomical
sites derived from their
particular workload. Injury
potential increases when
muscles tense through
18 July 2017 Equestrian Life
progressive workload and
begin holding themselves
regularly in a contracted
state. Consequently, blood
circulation can decrease,
movement is restricted
and nerves can irritate,
identified as stiffness
and pain. A tense and
unbalanced horse will
not be able to perform
to its best, leading to an
unharmonious situation.
Muscular issues are
recognised as one of the key
reasons in many training
set-backs, potentially
prompting periods of
time out of work and
subsequently competition.
Massage therapy
is advocated as an
effective method for the
maintenance of the equine,
loosening tight muscle
tissue, releasing muscular
tension and enhancing
blood circulation. Massage
employs numerous
“OVER THE TIME ELEANOR
HAS BEEN WORKING WITH OLI
JACKSON AND HIS TALENTED
PONY DAYDREAM, THEIR
PARTNERSHIP HAS GONE FROM
STRENGTH TO STRENGTH”
techniques, suggested
to assist range of
motion, stride length
and physiologic stress
responses.
Evidence leads to further
suggest that massage:
• relaxes muscle spasm,
• improves muscle tone,
• reduces congestion to
blood and lymph vessels,
• encourages tissue repair,
• stretches connective
tissue,
• maintains flexibility and
• prevents formation of
adhesions in muscles,
tendons and ligaments.
Regular massage treatments
are a great way to monitor
and maintain healthy
muscles, and assist in
reducing the potential
of injury. Provided your
horse doesn’t have contraindications,
some including
a high temperature,
undiagnosed lameness
and neurological issues;
basic massage techniques
can be performed as often
as you wish! The simplest
form being through a daily
grooming session.
A pre-event massage
session is an excellent warm
up opportunity to prepare
the horse for physical
activity. A post event
massage session encourages
the removal of toxins
resulting from work that
may contribute to muscular
soreness and relax the horse
following exertion.
Over the time Eleanor has
been working with Oli
Jackson and his talented
pony Daydream, their
partnership has gone
from strength to strength,
starting out at BE90 to
recently finishing 3rd at the
British Eventing Charles
Owen National Pony
Championship at Brand
Hall.
Oli and Daydream have
been placed in each of their
pony trials this season and
following their success at
Brand Hall have recently
long listed for the 2017 FEI
European Championships.
They will now compete in a
final pony trial at Barbury
International on the 7th
July against the other long
listed squad members,
with the hope of being
shortlisted to ride for Great
Britain in Kapsovar in
Hungary for the 2017 FEI
European Championship for
ponies taking place 25-30th
July 2017.
Even if thundering around
a cross country track is
not your idea of a day well
spent, preferring a more
relaxed day exploring
new bridleway routes
mixed with the occasional
pleasure ride, your horse
is still likely to appreciate
the therapeutic effects of
a massage and use of the
Photizo Vetcare, through
the improvement of
general well-being, release
of muscular tension and
pony club camp
Pony Club Camp
Building memories, learning more about horsemanship,
make new friends and have a great time!
20 July 2017 Equestrian Life
Let’s start by sharing with you a
few of our memories from Pony
Club Camp:-
• Weak orange cordial and eagerly
awaiting the arrival of said drink and ice
buns at mid-morning break
• Revising for your C+ all summer like
your life depended on it but not
touching your school homework at all
• The anticipation of which afternoon the
dreaded non-stirrups lesson was going
to fall on
• Spotting the arrival of your parents on
Friday afternoon for the show and end
of week prize giving and it feeling like
you left home years ago
These are just a handful of Team Elite’s
fond recollections of Pony Club Camp.
Some of us have to think much further
back than others but without exception
we have all experienced Pony Club
Camp in one form or another and we
would all do it again in a heartbeat
if we could (and if we were young
enough; you need to be under 25).
Pony Club Camp gives you that, ‘New
stationary at the beginning of term
vibe’. Attending camp gives you (or the
person who holds the purse strings)
that perfect excuse to splurge in the
tackshop. And when you’re at Camp
the water fights are unlike any other.
The water trough followed by the
muck heap is a wonderful ice breaker.
And then there is the old age question
about whose ride you’ll be in. We all
wanted the young, fun and care-free
instructor but didn’t necessarily always
get her. And if you were a boy, the ratio
of boys to girls meant that if you played
your cards right there were enough
girls to ensure your pony was mucked
out, plaited and any other menial tasks
which didn’t take your fancy were done
leaving you sufficient time to catch
up on other more exciting things like
playing on your Nintendo DS (or back
in the day to make water bombs; see
water fights above).
Elite Equine Care comprises of a select
team of mobile grooms who work
predominantly but not exclusively
in private stables in Derbyshire. Our
clients range from professional riders
to riders who hung up their boots many
years ago and from toddlers to the
elderly. Our work is varied and includes
caring for and keeping fit a huge
number of children’s’ ponies during
term time ready to hand the reins back
to their junior riders during the school
holidays. For those of us fortunate
enough to have this association we
also get to relive our childhood days by
being a part of their Pony Club Camp
entourage.
In the weeks leading up to Summer
Camp we play a pivotal role ensuring
the ponies are exercised and cared for
so they peak at the required time. We
also spend more hours than we care
to calculate working with the junior
jockeys coaching them in horse care,
horse health and horse management
so they are fully versed and capable
of carrying out such tasks at Camp.
Of course it doesn’t always go to plan,
when does it with horses, but regardless
of the thrills PONY
and spills of Camp life
without exception every child returns
home more accomplished as horse
Fun, Learning and Friendship!
people than they were a week earlier.
They also return with greatly improved
social skills. Pony Club camp is, without
doubt, one of the most thrilling and
educational experiences any young
rider will ever be a part of.
DENTISTRY
WOLF TEETH
and Canine teeth
Continuing on the theme of looking at different equine
teeth in more detail, this week we discuss the issues
surrounding canine teeth and wolf teeth.
CANINE TEETH
As previously discussed,
canine teeth are the
‘fighting’ teeth, and have no
purpose in the modern day
domestic horse.
Situated in the interdental
space between the incisor
teeth and the cheek teeth,
they are found mostly
in male horses, but can
occasionally be found in
(more dominant) mares.
They usually appear
between 4 and 6 years of
age, and slight discomfort
is sometimes noted as they
push through the gum.
Minor disease is commonly
seen, however more serious
issues are rare.
Calculus (tartar) build up
Commonly occurs, due to
the combination of the teeth
not having a purpose (and
therefore not being used),
and salivary glands located
under the tongue causing
the teeth to be continually
bathed in saliva.
In some cases the gum
surrounding the tooth
canine calculus
becomes inflamed - this
should settle once the
calculus has been
removed.
Fractures
Usually following
trauma such as a
kick, or being caught
on a haynet or fence.
Depending on the
extent of the damage,
treatment would usually
involve either gentle burring
of the tooth to remove any
sharp points, or extraction.
In some cases it may be
possible to save the tooth
by performing a ‘root canal’
style treatment, using a
similar technique to that
used in human dentistry.
EOTRH
Equine Odontoclastic
Tooth Resorption and
Hypercementosis (EOTRH)
can affect canine teeth as
well as incisors (see last
month’s article). Painful,
loose canines should be
removed.
Infections
Rare, but can occur
following aggressive
reduction of the teeth and
exposure of the sensitive
pulp. It is not recommended
that these teeth are rasped
routinely - treatment
should only occur if a sharp
point is causing trauma to
surrounding soft tissues.
Infected canine teeth are
usually diagnosed on x-ray,
canine fracture
and are likely to require
extraction.
WOLF TEETH
These teeth are also situated
in the interdental space, but
located next to (or close to)
the first cheek teeth.
They can occur in both
males and females, and
usually erupt at or shortly
after birth if present.
Anything from 0 to 4 wolf
teeth - 2 upper and 2 lower
- can be present, although
upper wolf teeth are far
more common. A variety of
different shapes and sizes
exist, and position can vary
from being in contact with
the first cheek teeth to
several centimetres apart.
Is removal necessary?
Owners commonly request
that wolf teeth are removed
due to concerns that they
may interfere with the bit.
In reality, a correctly
fitted bit should
never come into contact
with normally positioned
upper wolf teeth - it could,
however, contact any lower
wolf teeth as it tends to sit
more on the lower bars of
the mouth.
Whilst normally positioned
wolf teeth do not always
require removal, those in
an abnormal position, blind
(unerupted), fractured, loose
or diseased in any other way
may cause discomfort, and
should be extracted.
What to expect if removed
Extraction of wolf teeth is
usually straightforward, but
the roots of these teeth can
be long and easily broken,
and it can sometimes take
displaced wolf tooth
tooth
inside of the wolf teeth,
under the gum) can be
hit by an instrument
when elevating the gum.
Bleeding is profuse and can
be alarming, but not life
threatening and will stop
with pressure. If the tooth
is still to be removed it will
likely be done at a later date.
Fracture
Wolf tooth roots are often
very long and narrow, and
in older horses can be firmly
attached to the surrounding
bone, making fractures
common. In many cases the
root can be dug out after
the majority of the tooth
is removed - in others, if
the fracture has occurred
well below gum level, it
may cause more damage to
try to remove it - in most
cases leaving a small piece
of root will cause no future
problems.
Slow healing sockets
Usually a result of a loose
fragment of tooth or
bone being left behind.
Careful exploration of
the socket with the horse
under sedation and local
anaesthetic will often enable
the offending material, and
allow normal healing to
continue.
local anaesthetic
extracted wolf teeth
longer than expected to
remove them.
Remember, only Vets or
qualified Equine Dental
Technicians (EDTs) under
continuous veterinary
supervision are permitted to
remove normally positioned,
erupted wolf teeth. Wolf
teeth in an abnormal
position or not erupted
through the gum can only be
removed by a Vet.
Prior to extraction, horses
should be sedated and local
anaesthetic injected into the
gum around the wolf tooth.
Instruments are then used
to gently elevate the tissues
surrounding the tooth until
it is loose enough to be
removed. Depending on
the size of the tooth, this
process can take anything
from a few seconds to many
minutes!
After extraction the sockets
should be flushed out to
check no fragments of bone
or tooth remain. A bit
should be avoided until the
gums have healed - usually
7-10 days is sufficient but if
the teeth were abnormally
large this process may take
longer.
HOOF CARE
SUMMER
Hoofcare
Evangaline Atterby. BSc (hons) Bioveterinary Science.
Nutritional Advisor and Technical Assistant.
Hooves. Four remarkable little
things which somehow manage
to support the weight of our
horse, from the Shetland to the Shire.
Already under plenty of strain then,
the slightest upset in the balance of
their composition can have drastic
effects on performance, including
lameness. What are the factors which
affect hooves in summer and can we
support them effectively?
Water balance is a key area in hoof
strength. Wet summers can lead to soft
hooves and peeling walls. Undermining
the integrity of the hoof wall means
that they are less able to perform,
whether you are hacking around the
woods or jumping a track. Equally the
dry ground can strip moisture from the
hoof wall, which can cause cracking
and splitting. It seems like a catch 22,
but what we can do is offer support via
supplementation and applications, in
order to maximise hoof integrity no
matter the weather.
Constant changes between the two
states, wet and dry, can lead to poor
quality hoof wall and growth. Applying
a moisturising product can help the
hoof by rebalancing moisture levels,
strengthening the hooves. Traditional
hoof oils, whilst great for shine in
the show ring, may not always be the
best way to moisturise so look for a
product which allows for fluctuation
moisture to occur without adding lots
of grease and oil. Allowing fluctuation
will support hoof wall elasticity, vital
for performance. Equally if you know
your horse has soft soles, which are
prone to bruising, consider using a
strengthener, which can just be painted
on and helps to disinfect the hoof.
Constant
changes between
the two states,
wet and dry,
can lead to poor
quality hoof wall
and growth
Feeding the correct nutrition is a vital
factor in all aspects of horse health,
and this includes the hooves. Hoof
support products are usually available
in pellets, powders and liquids, making
them easy to feed, whatever your
horse prefers. Biotin is a commonly
used ingredient in hoof support
products. Keratin forms the basis for
both hoof and hair, and Biotin is key
in producing sufficient, good quality
keratin, therefore ensuring we have
a ready supply of Biotin can help to
strengthen our horse’s hooves. MSM, a
bioavailable sulphur, works alongside
Biotin to ensure strong bonds in
healthy horn. Calcium and Zinc are
also great hoof support ingredients,
commonly used in conjunction with
cysteine and methionine to supply key
amino acids for the protein production
required for healthy hooves. There
are many hoof supplements available,
but look for ones which combine all
of these with milk thistle, a great liver
support ingredient. The liver can play
an important role in hoof health, as it
the bodies major detoxifier.
As the hoof can take as long as
12 months to grow out fully it is
important that we really take care
of our horses hooves and address
any problems at the earliest sign.
Combining good feeding with targeted
applications can help your horse to
produce strong and healthy horn,
keeping them active for longer.
transport
Transporting Your Horse
Morley Veterinary Advises
Horses have not been
naturally designed
to travel in trailers
and Lorries, neither have
we been designed to drive
cars and fly in aeroplanes,
but we can adapt both our
physical and mental nature
to do these things, so it is
not surprising that when
we expect horses to travel,
chemical and physical
changes occur in their
bodies.
When they are loaded,
horses heart rates
increase due to anxiety or
excitement. Short journeys
cause higher blood glucose,
cortisol (adrenal hormone)
and heartrate. Whereas
longer journeys give lower
cortisol, probably because
the horse has got used to
the situation but higher
creatine levels due to the
effect on the muscles.
Upon arrival providing
horses in new
accommodation with food
and water allows them to
settle more quickly but
they are best left for up to
4 hours before expecting
them to perform at their
best physically.
Therefore, we understand
that transport of horses
will cause varying levels
of stress. Less stress when
horses are used for sport
or recreation frequently
and get used to transport
but more stressful for
horses with no previous
experience or having had
negative experiences.
Even horses that become
used to transportation can
often suffer from physical
tiredness, loss of weight due
to disrupted feed time and
restriction of movement
causing muscular problems.
Fear of loading can be
due to height of ramp –
steepness and entering an
enclosed space. Reducing
the incline of the ramp,
making it more stable and
less noisy improves loading.
I have found with my own
horses that more windows
are better but that might
not work for all.
Step up trailers without
ramps can help as the
horse steps up, he naturally
lowers his head so has less
chance of injury. The use
of sedatives to facilitate
easier loading is fine, but
if going to a competition
or show usually these days
are prohibited and may
be tested for, with serious
consequences.
Some horses travel well
facing forwards, some
backwards and some
diagonally. Every horse
is different. Backwards is
reported to be best. Some
travel better without a
partition, some rely on it
for balance. Space inside a
lorry or trailer is important.
The more the better.
Partitions vary too. Some
go right down to the floor
and some have a rubber
“curtain” at the bottom.
This type allows a horse
to spread his feet and
brace whilst the vehicle is
moving. Tying up a horse
for a long period of time
can also cause problems
as naturally a horse will
regularly lower its head
thereby allowing the upper
respiratory tract to drain.
This is not possible if the
head is kept high for hours.
Respiratory infections are
more likely and transit
fever can occur. Good
ventilation is essential as
exposure to ammonia from
urine and carbon monoxide
from vehicle exhausts
can damage the surface
of the lungs making them
susceptible to bacteria and
infection. Very important
if horses are in stationary
lorries in traffic. Travelling
has an effect on weight
and fitness, horses eat less
when moving and will often
reduce their water intake
thus becoming dehydrated.
Horses often dislike
different water so take
plenty from home, if this is
not possible we have had
success with adding a small
amount of a particular
blackcurrant concentrate
to the water for 2 weeks
prior to a long journey and
carrying on using the new
water at the competition,
it hides the different taste.
Keeping horses drinking is
really important.
Choosing good routes –
main roads have less bends
than minor ones, avoid
roundabouts if possible and
predicted traffic delays. Not
a problem if your horse is
flying to his destination –
Jumbo Jets normally carry
up to 87 horses in Jet Stalls
but can fit in 112 if they fly
economy!
LARA DYSON
Here we talk to our resident monthly
blogger and Alltech ambassador,
dressage rider Lara Dyson.
Lara Dyson’s passion for
horses began early in
life and actually started
as a result of her family
looking after a Cleethorpes
beach donkey one winter.
Lara Dyson and Jazzed
Up at The Winter National
Championships.
Lara’s brother Simon, who
is nine years older, wanted
a pony after he enjoyed the
experience of looking after
the donkey; meaning Lara
has grown up surrounded by
horses and ponies.
Following a successful
career as an eventer at Pony
and Young Rider level, Lara
then switch to dressage and
joined BYRDS at the age of
23 and then went onto join
the senior ranks in 2009.
Combining a serious
dressage career and overseeing
her own breeding
programme with a full time
job, Lara’s life is hectic.
Add to this the birth of
her daughter, Annabelle
and the fact that Lara was
fitted with a pacemaker
in 2014, you wouldn’t be
wrong in thinking Lara was
superwoman!
How did you get into
riding?
I started riding when I was
very young, too young to
even remember, sitting
on my brother and sisters’
pony Crystal. It was just
the natural thing for me
to do. At three-years-old I
“He learns so quickly and
tries so hard. In only two
years he has gone from
Prelim to Prix St Georges…”
attended Pony Club camp
with Crystal, having to come
home at night because I
wasn’t old enough to stay!
You started out eventing,
what made you switch to
pure dressage?
I became quite worried
about the show jumping
phase and realised that once
I got up to advanced level
the jumps were rather big
and not forgiving. We never
really bothered with show
jumping lessons just using
competitions as the training
and concentrating on
dressage lessons and cross
country schooling.
How do you juggle work,
horses and becoming a
new mum?
I can only do it with the
help of a very supportive
husband and mum/ motherin-law
and the girls on the
yard but it is still demanding
trying to fit it all in and do a
full day’s work.
What do you love about
riding?
I love the trainability of any
horse and the feeling of
success when things start
to go well. After a day in the
Lara hopes to breed a few
quality foals each year.
office it is the best stress
release, when you get on
board and there is no one
but you and your horse in
harmony.
With Bodyguard now
winning at Prix St Georges
level, what are your hopes
for the year?
I would like to do a couple
more internationals this
year having just been out
and gained the qualifying
score again after Annabelle
was born at Prix St Georges
and Inter 1 and finish the
year with an Inter 2 at the
high profile show.
Felix looks to be a serious
potential future star, tell
me about him.
I just smile every time I ride
him. Although things were
never easy at the start, time
has been the key with him. I
have never rushed him and
take every day and what he
throws at me as it comes. He
learns so quickly and tries
so hard. In only two years
he has gone from Prelim to
Prix St Georges, although he
is not ready in strength yet
to compete at this level he
is able to do the entire test
with ease but I would like to
wait till the end of the year
to do our first competitive
test at this level. Felix will be
out at Small Tour level next
year and who knows what
his future holds, he is very
exciting.
What was your inspiration
behind your breeding
programme?
I guess it came from trying
to find a few horses for
myself, and realising how
difficult this was to actually
do, without being fed a few
lies. Also, I had a couple of
very good mares who we
bought because of their
breeding thinking in the
future it would be nice to
breed with them and that
future is now.
How would you like to see
this evolve in the future?
I would like to breed a
couple of serious horses
every year, hopefully
training them all the way
through to Grand Prix level.
The pleasure for me is in
the training of our own
youngsters, especially when
we have bred them ourselves
using our own mares and
stallions.
What do you enjoy doing
in your spare time?
Haha, what’s that? If I
can get any I have to say
it’s enjoying a good walk
with the dogs, Gary and
Annabelle or a weekend
away in Yorkshire.
Preparing
your Veteran for
an EQUINE
PHOTO SHOOT
Equestrian photographer
Rachel Bragg shares some
tips on how to prepare your
veteran for the perfect snap
As an equine photographer
it’s fair to say I’ve seen a
wide variety of sizes, types,
breeds and ages of horses through
my viewfinder. Whether that’s been
through my freelance work at horse
events up and down the Country,
or lately, as a lifestyle portrait
photographer where I work with you
and the horse in your lives.
Every horse lover who approaches me
for this kind of photographic service
has a different story to tell with his
or her horse, each one is special.
However they all share a common
desire to have wonderful memories
of the unique relationship they hold
with their equine best friends through
photographs. I never tire hearing
each story or giving owners the power
to be surrounded by heartfelt images.
AND WHO WOULDN’T!
However, a recent shoot very
poignantly reminded me of just why
I chose to make equine portraits such
an important part of my life today.
A young lady approached me with
the devastating news that after many
months of nursing her horse, the
medical outlook was uncertain at
best for him and bleak at worst. After
much soul searching and discussions
with both veterinary professionals
and family she decided the kindest
thing to do was have her beloved
horse put to sleep.
Thankfully as he wasn’t in immediate
difficulty she was able to create some
final special days with him and asked
me for a photo session. We had the
most amazing few hours together! I’d
gone through a few things with her
in advance regarding preparation and
this really helped on the day. I was
so honoured to be the photographer
giving her those final images that she
would later rely on for some comfort.
I knew I wanted to photograph horses
professionally as a direct result of
losing one of my own suddenly, at
the tender ago of just 5. I’d owned
her from day 1 but always thought
there would be time for lots of lovely
images of us together. Sadly I missed
out and it still hurts today, I only
have odd snaps of us together. I want
to prevent that situation for others.
So, in this article I am giving you
some advice on how to prepare your
lovely Veteran for a photo shoot,
so when you decide you would love
to do this with a photographer, you
know how to get the most out of your
experience. And this isn’t just for
shoots at the end of your horse’s life,
Veterans are amazing and I’ve had
the privilege to work with many older
horses that look like they’re in the
prime of their lives!
Firstly, there are many ways a good
photographer can work with older
or unsound horses during a photo
shoot so try not to worry about
30 July 2017 Equestrian Life
I’d owned her
from day 1 but
always thought
there would be
time for lots of
lovely images of
us together
this aspect if it directly affects you.
My advice though if your horse is
a little stiff or has a condition that
means mobility can be tricky is let
the photographer know in advance
so they can work with this and build
it into the structure of the session.
The last thing you all need is the
photographer suddenly attempting
to whisk you off to a forest or track a
few miles down the road they spied
on the way to your yard if actually
that’s not a physical reality!
COATS
I’ve personally never worried about
horses who have visible signs of
ageing, whether that’s a greying coat
or those who have a curl to it, maybe
due to Cushings. These are all very
much features of your beloved friend
and their time of life… so embrace it!
Let’s just have them smartly brushed
and super clean. If the weather’s
good and they’ll cope then please do
give them a bath – I’m sure they’ll
love the fuss too!
TACK
Give your tack a good clean too.
It doesn’t matter if you aren’t
riding them on the day as a good
clean bridle, including the bit,
makes a huge difference to the
photographs. The last thing you
want is a distracting bit of dried old
grass cemented to the edge of a bit,
or leather that’s not clean! Have
a good, clean headcollar available
too. Leather is best but if you don’t
have one then a simple plain/neutral
colour synthetic is fine. Neutral
colours because the photographer’s
aim is to focus entirely on the
relationship you share with your
horse. If headcollars or ropes are
brightly coloured, this is where
your eyes get drawn to and not the
fabulous way you and your horse are
interacting.
RELAX!
It’s important that both of you are
as chilled out as you can be. If your
horse has recently eaten this can help
them to relax. If possible try not to
have them in the stable for too long
before your session, particularly if it’s
not a routine that’s normal to them.
Once your session begins, if you
think they aren’t behaving on the day
don’t stress and don’t rush anything.
I promise you, your horse is never as
badly behaved as you think it might
be and a good photographer will wait
for the right shutter moment!
So, these are my main simple tips for
an enjoyable photographic session
with your horse.
Now all you need to do is find the
photographer whose work you love
best!
Have a fabulous day! Rachel x
Fabulous and Fun
Caracal Equestrian
will soon be a name
to remember. A new
British brand that sees
colour and style correlate
through to the equestrian
market. Fashion and
equestrian can wear sit
side by side with the use of
luxury fabrics and attention
to detail.
The founder, Ailsa, grew up
around horses and took to
competing professionally
after leaving school, but
after a couple of serious
accidents she decided to go
and study fashion design at
Manchester University and
on graduating the journey
of Caracal began.
Caracal was born when
Ailsa saw there was a gap in
the market for colour and
flair. Why shouldn’t a rider
look beautiful and stylish
whilst still in keeping with
the traditional tailored
style we all know and love?
The vision for Caracal was
to create a product the
wearer could trust and love,
pieces designed with the
rider in mind, but offering
comfortable and breathable
properties with the use of
properly sourced fabrics
whilst also keeping the
clothing fashionable.
The beauty of Caracal is
anyone can wear it. Caracal
believes the relationship
between horse and rider
is remarkable and the
love riders show towards
their horse is next to none
and that’s where Caracal
comes in; it’s a brand that
in time, will too, have that
connection between the
wearer and the clothing. A
strong trusted relationship
that people can rely on
whilst looking pretty great!
Just released are a range of
stock shirts with an array
of prints that are fresh
and vibrant. Each shirt is
carefully crafted in England
by either Ailsa herself
or by carefully sourced
machinists. The process
is about keeping the
clothing manufactured to a
minimum that way making
sure there is less wastage
and also keeps the products
on a limited editions basis,
making it more unique to
the wearer.
There is also a small
number of base layers
either in cotton or a
technical wicking fabric,
and the Autumn/Winter
range will also see some
new and exciting products
coming to Caracal, so stay
Is your horse rugged COMFORTABLY?
You don’t ever have to guess again..
Introducing ‘ORSCANA’ , the first equine health monitor
• Have you ever wondered if your
horse is getting hot and unsettled
while travelling?
• Ever been anxious that your yard
has over- or under-rugged your horse?
• Ever been dismayed to find a sweaty,
unhappy horse?
Banish those concerns forever with
Orcsana, a new equine sensor that
monitors and tracks body heat,
moisture and movement, collecting
real-time data. Orscana logs how long
a horse lies down, rests, stands calmly
or is mobile, and whether he is a
comfortable temperature beneath his
rugs. Linked with weather forecasts
and the previous night’s data,
Orcsana, can then advise you, via its
app, how to rug your horse.
“Nowadays, we tend to over rug
our horses. Using Orscana’s data,
along with our application and its
recommendations, horse owners no
longer have to rely on guess work
when choosing how to rug their
horse,” says Erwan Mellerio, cofounder
of Orscana parent company
Arioneo.
HOW IT WORKS
Simply attach Orscana’s small circular
sensor into the lining of your rug in
one of the special pouches provided.
Quickly download the application
to your smartphone, pairing the app
to your sensor, and data is recorded
straight away.
“The sensor is suitable for
professionals and amateurs alike. It
answers very real questions that have,
until now, remained unanswered. ‘Did
my horse really rest last night? Was
my horse too hot or too cold? The
weather changes tonight, should I be
changing rugs? How does my horse
cope with travel?’ explains Valentin
Rapin, co-founder of Arioneo which
makes Orscana.
The owner can thus build a picture of
each horse’s lifecycle over time and
what effect this cycle may have on
performance and wellbeing.
Beloved by professionals and
amateurs alike
Richard Davison, dressage rider: “A
simply brilliant device. To be able
to monitor your horse remotely is
fantastic and will undoubtedly result
in healthier and more comfortable
horses.”
Bella Giles-Smith, amateur dressage
rider. “Orscana is just awesome. I no
longer have to worry or guess which
rug I need to put on which is a huge
relief”
Bringing your Horse Back
into Work AFTER INJURY
with McNab Eventing
Injuries are an inevitable
part of competing and
after enforced time out
of work; the rehabilitation
process back to full fitness
can be tricky. Finding the
right programme depending
upon the type of injury is
crucial.
It is important to work
closely with your vet to
decide when the time is
right to start and there are
certain factors to take into
consideration, such as how
long the horse has been
out of action, their age,
breed and if they have lost
a considerable amount of
fitness. This will determine
how long the road back to
fitness is likely to take.
As competitive event
riders, Kevin and Emma
McNab know only too
well the highs and lows
of training horses and
the disappointment often
felt when an injury ends a
promising season.
Here, Kevin and Emma
McNab offer their advice on
bringing a horse back into
work following an injury.
Consider your end goal. If
you have a competition in
mind, work back from the
date of the event to build
your regime accordingly. If
you just enjoy leisure riding
the process is likely to be
easier and more a case of
building up the workload
gradually.
At the very beginning of the
rehabilitation process
assess your horse and
understand any weakness
they possess as this will
affect the plan. If your horse
lacks muscle or is weak
behind the saddle, more
time will be needed to build
fitness slower.
Remember that warming
up and cooling down is very
important when building
fitness, helping to keep your
horse as comfortable as
possible and muscles in the
best condition.
The first few weeks must
be spent slowly building up
the cardiovascular work.
Walking on roads helps to
strengthen ligaments and
tendons and hacking is
preferred to schooling as
working in straight lines
places less stress on the
joints.
Further into the regime, hill
work can be incorporated
as this is great for building
fitness and increasing
muscle on the hind
quarters. After all, this is the
engine of the horse!
An ideal plan for an event
horse returning to full
fitness would involve one
month of walking, one
month of trotting before
moving on to canter work in
the third month.
Kevin says: “When bringing
a horse back from rest
always allow plenty of time
to get them fit and allow
an extra two weeks for any
setbacks. Short cuts only
lead to pulled muscles and
more time off.
“Fitness is also about
more than just building
your horse’s stamina, it
is a combination of work,
grooming and feeding. It
is vital to feed according
to workload, gradually
increasing the rations to
meet the demands of the
extra energy requirements.
“Always check your horse’s
legs before and after every
exercise session, this is the
only way you will notice
any changes. Koolpak®
ON WINNING FORM
This month has seen some great results out competing for Lara
Dyson, only to have her high spirits dashed by a nasty injury
suffered by Felix while out in the field.
It has been another busy month that, at
times, has been eventful - life is never
dull with horses! In between lots of
training and competing, I have also been
working hard with lots of snagging and
handovers.
Firstly we went to Addington Premier
League show with both Bodyguard and
Felix, who were both superstars. The best
results came on the last day with a win in
the first ever ‘top hat and tails experience’
for Felix, the Advanced 105 and a personal
best score at a Premier League in the Prix
St Georges for Bodyguard with a score of
71.54%, placing us third by only 0.2%!
We returned home from Addington to a
wonderful black filly foal by Bodyguard
and out of our DHI Finestra mare by
Ferrgamo, born at 7.15am!
I went to ride a homebred by Cadans who
has been away being broken in and what
an amazing prospect for the future she
is going to be. Although very sharp and
a little scared, her natural movement
is fantastic. She will have a summer of
Doctor Green (grass) whilst being lightly
worked and then I will up her workload
over the winter. As quite a late developer
she still looks weak and I’m keen to not
push her until she’s got the strength to
sustain her natural movement without
causing any strain on her legs.
Jess, Jess (two Jess’s!), Annabelle and I
all headed to Sheepgate Tack and Toggs
Championships with Marvin, Midi,
Bodyguard, Felix, hoping for lots of red
rosettes and a few sashes, and we weren’t
disappointed.
Felix, although super spooky on the first
day which dropped him into second place
overall, despite winning the Medium
Championships on the second day, he
redeemed himself and won the Advanced
Medium Championships, so actually had a
win on both days.
Bodyguard won the Advanced
Championship with a win in the Prix St
Lara and Felix
at Addington
Premier League
show
Maggie and her
mum, Prada
Georges both days and, super
and pulled it out, making a
excitingly, gained 72.54%
complete mess of his leg.
on the first day, proving
With the fantastic quick
he’s getting more and more
Our haul of Rosettes from thinking from Jess, and vet
confident every time out and The Sheepgate Tack and Norrie from Rase Vets, we got
I feel like a can now really Togs Championships it stitched up and he is now
start to ask for a lot more
on the road to recovery. Very
expression without it upsetting him.
sadly this will mean six to eight weeks out
I decided to enter Felix into the Prix St so the Premier leagues are now out of the
Georges just to see whereabouts he is question but, to be honest, he’s my horse
with scores as we are planning his first for the future, so as long as it heals as it
proper Prix St Georges debut at the end of should, the future’s more important than
this year or early next year once he’s a bit this year.
stronger.
After Felix’s injury I was waiting for my
Much to our amusement he actually luck to turn and it did - with the arrival
beat Bodyguard to win the class with of two colts by Bodyguard, who we have
Bodyguard only 0.2% behind him! This named Maverick and Magnum!
for me is an amazing achievement, given
So this year we have very excitingly had
I only started riding him two years ago
Maggie, Mia, Maverick and Magnum, now
and he hasn’t been the easiest from the
I just need some help with KWPN passport
dressage
TEAM SHEEPGATE
are busy, busy, busy...
This month I thought I would look at some basic points for riding a successful
dressage test, although I use the principles in this plan for most things
that I do anyway.
What is the goal?
There has to be a starting point in
deciding what we want to achieve
when riding a test. If we have a young
horse that is doing its first ever
dressage test, maybe to stay inside
the white boards and achieve all of
the transitions within a few strides
of the marker may be a realistic
goal, compared to an established
partnership who are very secure at the
level, they may be looking for those
extra marks to break the 70% barrier,
or even higher. So it is essential that
you look at every situation you find
yourself in when riding a test and
establish what the aim is.
What preparation do you need?
Once you have decided on your goal,
then there needs to be the planning
in what you need to do to try and
achieve that goal. How are you
going to prepare your horse or pony
and how are you going to prepare
yourself? I compare this to making
a cake...what ingredients do you
need in your recipe to achieve the
end result? There are two important
factors when preparing and that is
how you prepare your mind and your
thoughts and how you prepare your
actions to follow that. The power of
the mind is an amazing thing and it
is so important that we think in the
right way to be able to do the right
things.
How are you going to do it?
Be prepared, allow yourself the right
amount of time and get on and do
it! Having the confidence in the
preparations that you have made can
make all the difference.
What was the outcome of the
performance?
So whether the outcome was good or
bad it is essential that you learn from
every experience you find yourself in.
If the outcome was good, perhaps you
then look at how it can be made even
better. It is so important to review
what actually happened, especially
in the situation of an outcome that
wasn’t what was wanted. We can all
learn so much when things go wrong.
If we don’t review it, how easy is it to
do it all again in just the same way
and get just the same outcome? It
is essential that we learn what went
wrong and why, to avoid repeating
it in the future. I always say you can
learn so much from when things go
wrong.
TOP TIP
Have you considered what you
do before you even get to ride
the test?
So you are happy with your working
in, it’s your turn next to go to the
arena and by the time you get to
the judge ringing the bell for you to
start you have lost a lot of what you
had in the working in.
Does this sound familiar?
Consider two things: what did you
do as you went from the working in
arena to the competition arena and
how did you ride around the outside
of the arena before the bell rang?
So much can happen during these
few minutes. It is essential that you
keep your focus from the working
in arena to the competition arena,
if your horse needs a stretch before
36 July 2017 Equestrian Life
What Lily Payne did next!
So the summer season is well
underway at Sheepgate Equestrian
and after a really great show for
The Sheepgate Tack & Togs 4 Day
Dressage Championships at the end
of May, there was just time for The
Payne family to escape to the sun
for 6 days for a brief family holiday!
On the return home there was only a
week before Lily Payne was on her way
to Hagen for her first International
show of the year. Riding Ann Savage’s
stunning mare Beckhouse Cancara,
it was great for her to have a short
holiday at the same time as Lily was
away so Sheepgate’s Alex Jewell
worked her from the ground and did
plenty of pole work which is of huge
benefit to every horse or pony.
As I am writing this, I am sat in the
German sunshine on my laptop
outside the horsebox, with Lily doing
her trot up later today. Fingers crossed
for a great show.
We are rather excited by Team
Sheepgate’s new arrival for Lily, a
stunning 6 year old black mare, found
by the Woodcroft Stud. More will be
revealed next month!
the test, incorporate this into your
working in time, not as you walk to the
main arena. This is the time to keep
your horse and yourself focused.
It is essential that you ride as if
nothing has changed from the working
in arena. So if you are a bit nervous
and walk around the arena, tightening
your seat, stopping using your legs,
fixing your hands and your shoulders
and neck restricted with tension...what
signal does this give to your horse?
Keep moving around the outside of
the arena, ride some transitions, some
halts, a rein back if it helps, plenty of
deep breaths yourself, give your horse
a pat, smile! This takes practice but
breathe and keep riding, be confident
that you can perform the test just like
you have so many times before during
your training sessions when everything
went well, it can happen for real in
your next test. Good Luck!
Entering
young horse
classes...
Galerius
(Diamond De Semilly
x Sandro Boy)
A Secret to Sovereign Equestrian’s Success
At Sovereign Equestrian, we have consistently utilised
age classes to help aid the development of our young
horses into high-quality, consistent performers.
Age classes are an outstanding way to showcase and
highlight the talent of young horses, enabling you to both
produce your horse and subsequently promote them. At
Sovereign Equestrian, we understand the value of age
classes which is why we recently sponsored the 5-yearold
class at the Northcote Young Horse Championships.
As well as sponsoring this prestigious event, we also
competed, with a selection of our horses entered into a
variety of categories including the; 5, 6 and 7-year-olds
and the Talent Seekers.
In terms of our own success story, the most recent
example is Galerius. He is a 6-year-old stallion that
Sovereign Equestrian owned as a 3-year-old, and
then after a couple of years of development under our
wing, sold as a 5-year-old. Galerius’ career highlights
include jumping triple clear and clinching victory in
the Foxhunter second rounds at Keysoe. The key aspect
for us, was seeing how exposure to age classes – even
with a developed horse like Galerius – can still produce
incredible results.
Whilst we understand completely that all horses develop
at different rates, it’s still imperative to put a plan in
place for your horses’ individual requirements. On many
occasions we have had situations where a particular
horse can appear to be a substantial way behind on their
development pathway, only to experience a late surge
and catch up before you know it. All of our horses are
tailored to their own requirements, which is why some
will start competing at the age of 4 and others can take
an additional year to reach their potential. In either
case, age classes remain an excellent avenue to showcase
and highlight young horses and ensure that when they
do begin to compete as 5 year olds, they’re in a much
stronger position than they otherwise would have been.
The photo opposite, is from the Northcote Stud Young
Horse Championship. The ability of the Sovereign
horses is evidence that sticking to a consistent plan of
development can turn your young horses from prodigies
into established performers. Our main advice, therefore,
is always to identify how far along the development
pathway a horse is early on, and then decide from there
whether they require additional time to develop or are
ready to start their competitive career.
At Sovereign Equestrian, we train, maintain, and
care for our horses so that they become exceptional
performers across all disciplines. We know that a fit
and healthy horse is a happy horse, and a happy horse
is a successful horse. We want to share some of our
techniques with you because, with the right care and
training, your horse can reach its true potential.

Already at the half-way
point of the Season!
It is really hard to comprehend that
in a few days’ time it will be midsummer
and we will be looking
at night’s drawing in, can it really be
that we are now half way through the
year!! We have just finished two quick
events, so we have now completed 4
of our 8 events for 2017.
Shelford was a really great three days,
good weather and lots of competitors.
With around 500 competitors
competing in the BE classes and a
further 230 at our unaffiliated
day, it always interests me why
there are so many riders that
wish to compete unaffiliated.
The courses are exactly the
same, same dressage tests, show
jumping and nearly the same
entry fee, but still we get big
numbers. Some of these will
be BE riders bringing young
horses, but most are non BE
members. Is it the cost of BE
membership? What is it that
puts riders off riding at a BE
event?
We were then off to Berkshire College
of Agriculture, 10 days later. It was
great to be back there and to help to
develop the event. It is located in
a great position and easy access for
competitors, so it was rewarding to
get such big entries, nearly 600 riders
competing! It was two long days
but, with good weather we have left
little or no damage. We are enjoying
working in the south of the country,
it is always interesting to see the
variations of the sport as you travel
up and down the country. Whilst it
is the same sport there are definite
idiosyncrasies in each region!!
In between the two events I was off
to Oxford for a three day residential
The Goldman Sachs Small
Business Programme
with Goldman Sachs. The 10,000
small business program is absolutely
fascinating, we had four excellent
lecturers over the three days, all very
challenging and thought provoking.
The program is designed to assist
and help small businesses grow and
strengthen within the market. I am,
at times, finding it quite brain frying!
We have access to an amazing array
of experts in so many fields, there
to challenge us, push us into bigger
thinking and help us with a plethora
of questions and challenges. We have
to work hard by day, but the evenings
provide us a great opportunity to
mix with a group of like-minded
people, many of us facing the same
challenges. The Wednesday evening,
saw us enjoying an excellent meal
Potential New Sponsors arriving
in the amazing surround of the
Randolph Sculpture Gallery at the
Ashmolean Museum.
We arrived back from BCA late on
Sunday evening, then I was off the Isle
of Wight on Monday. This project is
really gaining momentum with some
great meetings there. Tuesday was
spent showing a potential supporter
around the estate, in the beautiful
summer weather it really had the
WOW factor. Every time I go I get so
excited by the prospects of the event.
As with all new events it is often one
step forward and two back, but I feel
that this week we have made some
significant steps forward to turning
this dream into a reality.
Next week I have a bit of time off, or
nearly time off as I still have to join
in the Goldman Sachs web lectures,
however Cornwall beckons and the
sun promises to shine!
ROCKINGHAM shows
Wet,wet,wet!
Report by Arabella Clegg
Unfortunately for Rockingham
this was the second
consecutive year as a mud
bath. The event hosts classes from
BE100 to advanced intermediate and
two international classes of one and
two star.
Thursday was dry and warm for the
start of the international dressage.
Friday saw the start of the bad
weather and therefore changing
ground conditions, this left the lorry
parks and stabling a sore sight, for a
usually beautiful Rockingham Castle
Estate.
A buzzy event which pulls in plenty of
spectators, a real international feel for
both horse and rider.
The main show jumping arena is
packed with trade stands all around,
as well as flags flying and sponsors
advertisement boards.
Across the levels the show jumping
courses were causing trouble, this had
a lot to do with the sticky going. For
Sunday’s competition the jumping
was moved to a different arena to give
the competitors fresh
ground.
Ibby McPherson posted
a great win in the
BE100 aboard Bountiful
Bess, scoring 16 in the
dressage. This ex race
horse has now won
two events on the
trot.
Piggy French is
keeping up her
good form with
second place in
Willa Newton
both the one and two
and Freestyle R
star, Big Berry and Jump
Jet III respectively. Over the
weekend Piggy also won a BE100
aboard Fernhill G and another second
on Cooley Monsoon in a novice.
Lauren Shannon took top honours in
Novice Section S, leading throughout
on a 25.3 dressage, the pair jumped a
double clear adding 4.4 time penalties
across the country.
Alex Postolowsky had one of the
speediest cross country rounds in
the Novice class.
Finishing nine
seconds
Lauren Shannon and
Rinneen Silver Rocket
inside the 4 minute
3 second time, to fill
second place in novice
section R.
Willa Newton took third and
fourth in a novice and BE100 section.
A slightly slower cross country round
cost her the win in novice section J
aboard Freestyle R. They impressed
the dressage judge to score 23.5 in the
white boards.
There was a 10th place for Tina
Canton and OWe Two in the Open
Novice.
Eliza Stoddart had a busy weekend
with seven rides ranging from BE100
to two star. She finished the weekend
with two fifths and a seventh in the
national classes.
tack
TINA CANTON
Block
TACKLE
We are increasingly
faced with an everexpanding
variety of
tack to choose from
these days! Although this is great for
choice and for also price competition
to make everything more affordable,
it can also sometimes overwhelm you
with too many choices!! There is also
a lot of new research using pressure
pads under nosebands to blow away
long standing theories about
‘kinder’ nosebands. Bitting is
also becoming more scientific
with some big brands doing
some great research that
is disproving long held
beliefs. So - how do you
choose what to put your
horse into? Everyone is
different and all riders and
trainers have their favourite
bits and nosebands. It goes
without saying that the first
management issue before even
thinking about putting a bridle on
the horse is to make sure that the
horses teeth are in good order. This is
really important, especially in young
horses where their teeth are erupting
and changing. We get all of our horses
checked every 6 months to keep on top
of them. Any wolf teeth are removed
and the horse allowed to have a period
of recovery as this procedure can
leave them a bit sore for a short time.
It’s also a good chance to look at the
mouth conformation of the horse to
see how much room is in there. Horses
with big tongues can’t have bits that
are too thick as there is no room!
We start all our young horses in a
plan cavesson noseband, not done up
too tight. Latest research shows that
a tight cavesson puts more pressure
on the nose than a crank noseband.
This is often used with a loose elastic
standing martingale to teach them
that head tossing is not allowed. Bit
wise, they are in a breaking bit with
keys when they first have a bridle on,
and they are then moved to a simple
double-jointed bit - often with a
lozenge rather than a french link as
it’s a bit softer. I prefer a copper metal
mix as its warmer in the horse mouth.
Horses that mouth and fiddle a lot are
often put into an eggbutt or full cheek
depending on steering. Sometimes the
full cheeks can make the youngsters
try to catch them as a bit of a game!!
This doesn’t result in a nice still head
carriage! If the horse is a little dry and
still in its mouth, we would use a loose
ring. With youngsters a big bit ring is
best as it can help with steering. Be
aware that there is more chance of a
loose ring rubbing the corners of the
mouth - so be sure it fits or use biscuits
on the side of the cheeks. Be sure with
the youngsters that the bit fits well
and is high enough up in their mouth
- there should be a couple of creases
42 July 2017 Equestrian Life
Bear in mind
that often you
can use a bit
or noseband to
educate and you
don’t have to
stay in it
at the corners of the lips - otherwise
busy babies will experiment and get
their tongue over the bit. Believe me
that does nothing for your steering
and brakes!! If you have a horse that
makes a habit of getting the tongue
over there are a few options - there
are a couple of brands who do starter
bits that are straight bar but lift up
and back to give tongue room. You
can get a tongue guard that is a rubber
attachment that goes on the bit but i
think this must be very annoying for
the horse.
An Australian noseband is often used
on racehorses to pull the bit more
towards the roof of the mouth. These
are not often seen out of racing. In
the ideal world you aim to stay in
this simple bitting and noseband
arrangement, but horses don’t read
the same training manuals as us so
we often have to change and adapt as
they grow and become stronger and
more opinionated!! Bear in mind that
often you can use a bit or noseband
to educate and you don’t have to stay
in it. If the horse is starting to open
the mouth to evade then the obvious
answer is to use a noseband that shuts
the mouth. I prefer a mexican grackle
as the pressure is higher up the face
and doesn’t press the cheeks into the
molars. Start with the straps done up
moderately as for some horses this
is enough. We do want the horses to
mouth slightly, but daylight is not
good! You can just use a flash, but
this does put pressure on the side
of the molars. Any horse that seems
very difficult to settle in the contact,
sometimes goes better in a lower
strap such as a drop, micklim bridle
or one of the new fairfax drops. It’s
worth experimenting to get the horse
comfortable. If you need to go stronger
on your bitting - there are many
avenues to take. First tactic can be to
just try a thinner mouthpiece as they
are a bit sharper. A single joint is also
stronger - but if they cause discomfort
by pinching this can work against you.
Rollers and multi jointed bits can be
good for those who grab the bit. A
Wilkie cheek can change the action. A
copper waterford snaffle is my go to bit
for ones starting to get a bit keen! We
have some lovely soft gags available
now. The Universal is my favourite and
most horses seem to accept them. You
can ride in double reins to soften the
action or change the action by putting
a strap on the back from the top ring,
round the back of the nose to the other
top ring. You can use a spur strap, flash
strap doubled back or we use a plastic
back strap from a driving bit. If this is
not strong enough the back strap from
a hackamore with a chain often works.
Modern bridles aim to take pinching
and pressure points away, as well as
relieving pressure on facial nerves and
blood vessels. Leather now is broader
in profile and this spreads pressure.
A lot of research has gone into
headpieces and noseband straps sit
over the headpiece or have a fastening
on both sides of the bridle so no strap
is going over. Headpieces are much
broader, padded and are often cut
back behind the ears. Nosebands have
lovely padded sections at the areas
that goes over chin areas for comfort.
There also seems to be a new trend
for no throat lash - but you are still
required to have one for the jumping
elements under rules - so be sure to
check this!!!
Many people spend a fortune on all
the latest bits - often into hundreds
of pounds and the latest bridles can
be up to £400! Keep in mind that it all
comes down to the skill of the rider!
Gadgets do not train horses, but they
can cover up a multitude of sins!
These short cuts are always bought
to the fore later in training and often
the wheels fall off when the horses are
put under more pressure. Take time
to educate acceptance of the bit and
response from the leg and it shouldn’t
matter what is in their mouth and on
their head!!
EMMA HYSLOP
LUHMUHLEN...
First big one of the year
Leading up to leaving for
Luhmuhlen Douglas went
and jumped a lovely double
clear in the OI at Little Downham.
We then crammed in quite a few
dressage lessons with Michael
(Eilberg) and he has been going
really well, also lots of homework
but that’s why horses are so
addictive as we never reach perfection. Out came
the trunk and we packed up ready to go.
We set off on Monday evening, I travelled
again with Sarah Bullimore; it does help
when you can share the driving. Due to
ferry delays and road works it took us 19
hours to get there, it’s a good job I am
not a full time lorry driver as I would
be so fat, when you are stuck on the
same bit of road for over a hundred
miles, what is there to do but eat
Haribos!!
We arrived and got settled in, it was
quite hot out there and the horse flies
were driving them crazy. Trot up was
Wednesday afternoon, with the drawn
order out Wednesday night. It turned out
that I was drawn second to go, this is not the best
as the judges do not have anything to compare
against. He did a good test to score 55.6 and I
do feel that he would have been given a lower
mark for the same test the following day. The
welcoming party was on the Thursday night, we
all had a little drink and showed the Germans how
to dance!! What an event for looking after owners
and associates, if you had a wristband you did not
pay for a thing, drinks yes alcohol as much as you
wanted: food, daily food vouchers. A party most
nights, a super fun event very well run.
I walked the course a few times, once with Chris
Bartle, I think five in total. A few of the distances
required very positive riding but overall It was
lovely, they do like their tables maximum height
and width. A total of four water complexes. It
was very jumpable and I had planned to go all
the straight routes. Again being second to go I
did not have the opportunity to see the course
ride, Caroline Powell only managed to get to the
first water so I was the trail blazer for the rest of
the course, sometimes this can be a good thing,
the course required positive riding and that’s the
…I was drawn
second to go, this
is not the best as
the judges do not
have anything
to compare
against
mindset I set out with. Douglas set out in his
normal bold manner, the first question was
the water, this rode well as did the second
water. Then there was a drop fence to a
corner up a mound, Douglas jumped
the drop fence very big, tipped my
body forward for a stride I overshot
the turn and presented to the fence,
he was very naughty and ran out.
Something he has not done for a long
while, then once he has done this I
had lost his attention. So we walked
home, I did feel like making him walk all
the way home to be fair.
We got back home on Monday night and gave him
a few days off and then went back training on
Wednesday for my upper body over drop fences
and his left hand shoulder over corners. We now
plan to do a few three stars, then all being well
Burghley bound.
Our other local riders that went to Luhmuhlen
were Polly Jackson Griffin, who did a good test,
had a glance off across the country but jumped
a well deserved clear round show jumping, Also
local Kirsty Short had a glance off across the
country and had a few down show jumping but
Bouncer has now completed six four star events
an amazing achievement. Our best placed local
rider was Ros Canter who rode an amazing test,
clear across the country to have one down show
jumping to finish ninth.
We now head out to Skipton, Barbury, Brightling
and aim to have some good placing as long as we
all do a rain dance as the ground could end up
getting very hard.
Area 12 Side
Saddle Show
The Area 12 Ladies (Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire,
Derbyshire) were out over the May Bank Holiday
weekend. Good support across most classes with an
extremely high standard.
Huge thanks go to the hosts, Donita Welch for the use of their
land. To Cathy’s Chocolates for sponsoring each class and
the Championships with their fabulous bespoke chocolate
horseshoes and to the Judges, Mrs Ginny Oakley-Pope
and Mrs Amy Bryan-Dowell.
In Memory of Babette Cole
A new trophy was made this year for the
Concours D’Elegance class in memory
of a much-loved and missed member
of Area 12. Babette Cole sadly lost
her life to cancer after a short battle
earlier this year and the Area wanted
to arrange something to remember
her by. A fabulous sterling silver hat
box, set on a plinth was presented to the
inaugural winner of this class, Lauren
Allin and in true keeping to Babette’s
style, she paraded wearing a pink
feather boa to much applause from
competitors and spectators.
KERRY DAVEY
McTIMONEYEQUINE
PRACTITIONER BSC (Hons) PG
Dip AM MAA
Regd. Like people,
horses can suffer
from back, neck,
pelvic and
musculoskeletal
problems, and can benefit from
McTimoney treatment. Treatment
involves careful analysis and
assessment of the spine, pelvis and
any other relevant joints and precise,
rapid adjustments are given to
problem areas. Consider taking advice
if you notice changes in performance,
movement, assymmetry, unexplained
resistance or uneven muscle
development. Falls, accidents and slips
are ofter a common cause and
competition places even more strain
upon their skeletal structure. Horses
also receive great benefit from
preventative treatment and
McTimoney can help them perform at
their best. Kerry is based in
Lincolnshire and obtains requests
directly from owners and referrals
from veterinary practices. Kerry is fully
