Overseas travel tips with the sites you will need
1 A European Health Insurance Card
gives free or discounted medical
treatment in state-run hospitals in
any European Union country, plus
a few others. The card is free and
should be in date – keep it with
you to use in emergencies. Apply
through the official site www.ehic.
org.uk or you may be charged.
2 Check visa and other entry
requirements. They take time to
confirm and have a cost. The USA
offers the ESTA visa-waiver scheme
and you may need a ‘chipped’
passport. Apply at https://esta.
cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html.
Ensure your travel insurance
provider covers your destination
or they may refuse to pay out for
issues if declared unsafe. Get advice
from foreign travel advice service
www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice
3 The UK licence is valid in the EU
but you will need an international
driving permit for around 140
countries including the USA, India
and Thailand. These cost £5.50
and should only be obtained from
the Post Office, the RAC or the
AA. Get to know the local driving
regulations before you go. Use
the AA website for information on
driving laws by country – www.
theaa.com/european-breakdowncover/driving-in-europe/countryby-country.
Some European cities
have restricted driving times,
emissions charges and require
emission stickers (vignette). It can
take 30 days to apply for a vignette
and you may be fined without it.
Planning a trip to France: Go to
www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/
demande and French Environment
Ministry at www.certificat-air.gouv.
4 Sun cream has limited life and may
be less effective, check the date.
5 The star rating system for hotels
isn’t standardised. It may indicate
facilities rather than quality and may
not live up to your expectations, so
check reviews on Trip Advisor and
similar companies.
