EDITOR’S NOTE
Clichés rarely have any significant impact on us because by definition they
are overused and therefore trite and shallow in the context of any meaningful
conversation. Having said this, I have come to realise that beauty is
a very personal matter and that it is truly in the eye of the beholder.
In this issue, we have prepared a collection of features that we feel reflect
beauty. More importantly, we explore our perception of beauty. We
look at how it has changed over time and compare perceptions from one
side of the world to the other through an article about Beyoncé Knowles
who represents ‘The Game Changer’ for this issue (Mrs. Carter, p66).
We have become very accustomed to the technology we tap away at
everyday on our hand phones and the engineering that drives our cars,
this is life in 2014. If we did stop every once in a while to appreciate what
we have available to us, I believe we would be happier people. One of
the great joys of engineering and design to ever come out of Italy is of
course the Ferrari. This is why we have decided to feature their latest
model Ferrari 458 Speciale in ‘The Drive’ (Fundamentally Fierce: The 458
Speciale, p68).
Another form of beauty that we so easily adapt to is our living space.
This is perhaps one of the most important aspects of design in our daily
lives. In the ‘Home & Interior’ section, we interview Nadiah Micaela
Rodriguez, director of ACID on how she came up with the interior design
concept for Tropicana Metropark’s Paloma Serviced Residences &
Courtyard Villas (Abodes with Real Character, p38). Furthermore, Tropicana
has announced the construction of a direct link from Tropicana
Metropark to the Federal Highway that is scheduled to complete in 2016
(Living in Luxury, p44).
Every month our prerogative is to find and present you the readers
with beautiful stories to fill these pages. Whether you read about ‘The
Swing’ feature on the Fairmont Chateau Whistler (Golfing with the Gods,
p72) or enjoy the fashion and beauty spreads you will find there is beauty
in everything. Meanwhile, our cover personality Angie Kok, director of
La Bon Fashion Group, couldn’t be more fitting for this issue as she herself
loves all things glamorous and is the one who brought in renowned
French labels to Kuala Lumpur such as Givenchy, Kookai and Lancel (Parisian
Chic, p56).
Finally, take a peek at ‘The Vacation’ feature and discover Australia’s
finest luxury produce such as truffles, abalones, and Murray cod that are
served at top class restaurants (Exquisite Taste, p62).
When you take a minute to understand what goes into making something,
whether it be the presentation of a dish or the pages of a magazine,
your appreciation will change.
HAUNTED EMPIRE:
APPLE AFTER STEVE JOBS
YUKARI IWATANI KANE
[RM69.90]
Former Wall Street Journal
technology reporter Yukari
Iwatani Kane delves deep inside
Apple in the two years since
Steve Jobs’ death, revealing
the tensions and challenges
CEO Tim Cook and his team
face as they try to sustain Jobs’
vision and keep the company
moving forward. Steve Jobs’
death raised one of the most
pressing questions in the tech
and business worlds: Could
Apple stay great without its
iconic leader? Based on over
200 interviews with current
and former executives, business
partners, Apple watchers, and
others, Haunted Empire is an
illuminating portrait of the
brand today that offers clues
to its future.
THE AMAZING
SHOEMAKER
STEFANIA RICCI
[RM273.60]
Salvatore Ferragamo’s life in
the context of an extraordinary
journey into the world of fairy
tales with shoes and shoemakers
as their main characters. In
the course of time, myths and
legends from around the world
have often featured shoes
and the shoemaker’s amazing
craft, perhaps because the
shoe is a symbol of grace and
wealth, or perhaps because
of that enchanted aura that
surrounds the figure of the
shoemaker. Nonetheless, this
book journeys from Salvatore’s
childhood to his voyage on a
steamer headed toward the
United States to his arrival in
Hollywood, where his shoes
conquered the world of cinema
and were worn by the most
beautiful women in the world.
THE FUTURE OF THE MIND
MICHIO KAKU
[RM69.90]
For the first time in history, the
secrets of the living brain are
being revealed by a battery of
high tech brain scans devised by
physicists. Now what was once
solely the province of science
fiction has become a startling
reality. Recording memories,
telepathy, videotaping our
dreams, mind control, avatars,
and telekinesis are not only
possible; they already exist. Dr.
Kaku takes us on a grand tour
of what the future might hold,
giving us not only a solid sense
of how the brain functions but
also how these technologies will
change our daily lives.
THE CUCKOO’S CALLING
ROBERT GALBRAITH
[RM39.90]
When a troubled model falls
to her death from a snowcovered
Mayfair balcony,
it is assumed that she has
committed suicide. However,
her brother has his doubts, and
calls in private investigator
Cormoran Strike to look into
the case. Strike is a war veteran
– wounded both physically and
psychologically – and his life is
in disarray. The case gives him
a financial lifeline, but it comes
at a personal cost: the more he
delves into the young model’s
complex world, the darker
things get and the closer he gets
to terrible danger. Introducing
Cormoran Strike, this is the
acclaimed first crime novel by
J.K. Rowling, writing under the
pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
MUSIC
HELIOS
THE FRAY
Helios shows the more
aggressive side of The Fray.
Their style has definitely
changed since the days of ‘How
to Save a Life’. Starting their
career with deep and emotive
piano tracks and ballads, the
band then progressed to faster
beats with their new records.
Helio takes a step further as the
album is a lot edgier, showing
a different side of The Fray.
Tracks like ‘Love Don’t Die’
and ‘Hold My Hand’ will give
you a taste of what the album is
all about. Among the energising
and upbeat tracks, there will
be a couple of songs like ‘Same
As You’, that will take you on
a nostalgic trip back to their
style in year 2005. Fans will be
happy to hear that lead singer
Isaac Slade maintains his vocals
at top notch.
LOUDER
LEA MICHELE
Breaking out from musical
covers and broadway tunes,
Lea Michele is stepping out
as a pop singer in her album
Louder while dabbling in a bit of
songwriting herself. Cowriting
two out of the 11 tracks on the
album, Lea explores the ever
popular subject of love and the
hardship that comes with it.
The subject of love crafted
beautifully into pop harmony
also saw the help of popular
songwriters namely Sia Furler
and Chritina Perri. The ballads
are standouts of the album
like ‘Battlefield’ and ‘Thousand
Needles’ due to Lea’s soaring
voice. A gem in the album is
the final track ‘If You Say So’
which is a touching piano ballad
that explores the death of her
boyfriend, Cory Monteith.
GIRL
PHARRELL WILLIAMS
Funny hats and musical
collaborations aside, Pharrell
is undeniably a genius musician.
This can be clearly heard in his
second solo album, GIRL which
tells the story of his infatuation
with the female kind in a cheeky
way. It opens with a fairytale
like string composition that
infuses with the signature
Skateboard P beats 30 seconds in
a song called ‘Marilyn Monroe’.
Not forgetting his academy
award nominated feel good
song ‘Happy’ produced for the
Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. To
add some star power, Pharrell
called upon some friends like
Justin Timberlake for the
motown sounding ‘Brand
New’ and Miley Cyrus for the
infectious southern feel of
‘Come Get It Bae’ to name a few.
CRUSH
2NE1
Riding on the wave of K-pop,
one of the great bands to
emerge from it is R&B dance
quartet, 2NE1. Their second full
length album since 2010, Crush
sees the girls revolutionising
their R&B root while still
maintaining their signature
dance beats and adventurously
dabbling in new sounds like
reggae. Their first single ‘Come
Back Home’ is easily their best
track with an R&B infused
reggae rhythm and a sick
dubstep beat at the end of the
chorus. Ballads like ‘Good to
You’ show off the girls’ vocal
skills in a piano driven melody
with contributing lyrics from
resident bad boy of Korean hip
hop, G-Dragon. However their
thumping dance anthems are
still present in songs like ‘Crush’
and ‘Scream’.
HOME & INTERIOR
Abodes with
REAL CHARACTER
INTERIOR DESIGN CONCEPTS THAT PERSONIFY THE DYNAMIC LIFESTYLES
OF CITY DWELLERS GIVE DISTINCT APPEAL TO TROPICANA METROPARK’S PALOMA
SERVICED RESIDENCES & COURTYARD VILLAS.
WORDS ALICE YONG
PHOTOGRAPHS TROPICANA CORPORATION BERHAD
“Instead of following a certain design theme such as modern
contemporary or minimalist, the ACID team decided to
give a new twist and excitement to the ‘dressing-up’ of Paloma
show units by bringing to life their ‘characters’ through
concepts that reflect and distill the lifestyles, hobbies and
passions of potential buyers and residents,” says Nadiah Micaela
Rodriguez, director of ACID – a fast growing interior
design (ID) consultancy firm located in Malaysia and Singapore
with active interests in South and Southeast Asia firm
appointed by the developer, Tropicana Corporation Berhad
to handle Paloma’s ID.
Nadiah elaborates, “ACID’s approach for the Paloma show
units was to emulate distinct characters or personalities that
we envisaged occupying the units. This fresh approach enables
potential purchasers to view how a certain lifestyle and
personality can dictate the design of their abode compared to
the more conventional approach which focuses on concept
first but is sometimes devoid of life and soul.”
Launched in November 2013, the Paloma Serviced Residences
& Courtyard Villas is integral to Tropicana Metropark’s
latest mixed development project in Subang Jaya. Its
all-encompassing lifestyle integrates residential units, commercial
and office space, retail and shopping needs within an
88-acre freehold parcel of land.
The Paloma Serviced Residences & Courtyard Villas
consist of 587 units in two towers, featuring 600 sq ft onebedroom
studio units, 916 sq ft two-bedroom units ideal for
young couples or small families and the 1,200 sq ft to 1,300 sq
ft three-bedroom units for larger families as well as 16 exclusive
spacious villas.
Through the brilliant use of space, colour, lighting, textures
and embellishments, the distinctly themed Paloma show
units were creatively designed to inspire visitors. The three
recently revealed show unit layouts were exquisitely designed
to personify the vibrant character of its potential owners: a
photojournalist-fashion editor duo, a master chef and a family
of globetrotters.
According to Nadiah, “Conceptualising the ID for Paloma
into reality was easily achieved as the show units’ core design ➢
MAY/JUN 2014 | TA 39

← intent and styling was clearly defined by the distinct personalities
we envisaged living there. Our team had a field day
bringing the units to ‘life’ by adding evocative touches and
items that underscore those traits.”
Citing the example of a photojournalist-fashion editor duo,
Nadiah explains that ACID’s Facets & Hues concept was inspired
by the couple’s penchant for landscape photography
and fresh takes on style. “We see the creative duo’s first home
together as a contemporary and lively space that’s an extension
of themselves and conducive to raise their young family.”
Hence the ID emphasises breezy summer hues: a Tiffany
blue wall spanning the living and dining areas is juxtaposed
by a recurring theme of faceted elements. Windows draped
in yellow-green curtains with hexagonal motifs are complemented
by a cushy sofa enveloped in dark fuchsia fabric,
placed on a colourful patterned rug.
To please master chefs with an unmistakable passion for
cooking up a storm of wholesome healthy food and a love for
entertaining, the ACID team proffered a flawless kitchen – a
space of physical and spiritual nourishment – as the heart of
this home. Imbued with quintessential British chic, the cosy
three-bedroom unit is clad in rustic, unassuming elegance
where timber wall panels and furniture are matched with
a flamed stone kitchen top and shelves propped up by raw
metal framework.
For jet-setting urbanites, the two-bedroom home mirrors
their contemporary yet classic style with a touch of
post-modern European sophistication. Avid art collectors,
equestrian and wine connoisseurs will find the stylish abode
brimming with cosmopolitan flair; a haven where cherished
family heirlooms amalgamate with their eclectic and global
collection of objects d’art that testify to the globetrotters’ travails
around the world.
Standard fittings for all the Paloma units include kitchen
cabinets, hob and hood, microwave oven, air-conditioned
living room and bedrooms, storage water heater, timber strip
flooring for all bedrooms and shower screen without door.
For rest and recreation, residents will have access to a sunken
basketball court, a multi-purpose hall with pre-function
area, a floating and lookout pavilion, infinity, wading and
sanctuary pools, Jacuzzi, games room and a children’s playground.
On level 30 is a sky gymnasium, sky lounge cum private
dining area and reading corner.
Touted as a resort getaway for city dwellers, the focal
point of Tropicana Metropark will be centred around Central
Park – a sprawling, open air and secured 9.2-acre green
space that will serve as a communal gathering point for
families and residents.
Accessibility and connectivity to and from Tropicana
Metropark and its neighbouring areas will also be greatly enhanced
with the construction of a RM150 million flyover that
will connect Tropicana Metropark to the Federal Highway.
Tropicana building the future through
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
The Group plans to launch new projects across key regions in Greater KL,
Penang Island and Iskandar Malaysia, Johor
FINAL YEAR 2013 GROUP REVENUE JUMPED 134% –
Tropicana Corporation Berhad posted astonishing revenue
growth of 134% for the full financial year which ended 31
December 2013. The percentage saw the revenue increase to
RM1,475.5 million from RM630.4 million achieved in 2012,
while the profit before tax rose 123.9% to RM503.6 million
from RM224.9 million. Furthermore, the net profit attributable
to shareholders gained 112% to RM362.3 million.
There was a cause for celebration in the fourth quarter too
as Tropicana notched up revenue of RM444.7 million compared
to RM234.4 million in the same period last year. The
growth was also seen in the Group’s profit before tax with
the figure increasing 399% to RM325.2 million, whilst net
profit attributable to shareholders surged 313% to 256.5
million from RM62.1 million.
Tropicana’s stellar performance in 2013 was boosted by
strong development sales over the past two years, with key
contributing development projects including Tropicana
Grande, Tropicana Avenue and Tropicana Gardens in Central
Region, and Tropicana Danga Bay at Iskandar Malaysia.
Success in implementing its transformation strategy has enabled
Tropicana to achieve key milestones in its development
activities, where new sales in 2013 reached a record
high of RM2.16 billion.
Ongoing projects and new launches across key central, southern
and northern regions enjoy strong response from buyers.
Consequently, the Group’s unbilled sales at the end of 2013
was sustained at a high of RM2.18 billion, a marked improvement
from RM952 million recorded as at the end of 2012.
Going forward, the Group plans to launch new projects
across key regions in Greater KL, Penang Island and Iskandar
Malaysia, Johor. Catering to current market demand,
there will be a greater emphasis on landed residential and
township developments. Fairfield Residences, which was
launched in mid-February, received strong response with
62% of its units taken up over the first weekend of launch.
The project, comprising of 2- and 3-storey terrace houses
with estimated GDV of RM252 million, is part of Tropicana
Heights, a mixed development on 199 acres of freehold
land in up and coming residential hotspot Kajang.
Drawing on the strength of Tropicana’s development DNA,
with emphasis on location, accessibility, innovative designs,
security, efficient space utilisation, and creating community
of short distances, the Group is confident that its new projects
will continue to be well received.
Prospects for the Group remain robust. With the new
launches planned for 2014, Tropicana aims to sustain the
high sales and unbilled sales enjoyed in the last financial
year. The Group’s 2,268 acres of landbank across the key
growth regions in Malaysia, with total estimated GDV of
RM81.8 billion, is strategic and prime. There remain strong
potential for unlocking value in these landbanks, and for
Tropicana to sustain growth in its continuing focus to
transform into a premier property group in Malaysia.➢
2014 is another exciting year for the Group as Tropicana
is developing a portfolio of multi-billion Ringgit projects
across three strategic locations in Malaysia – Greater KL,
Iskandar Malaysia and Penang. Amongst new projects
planned for 2014, Tropicana is unveiling maiden launches
from its two new Greater KL townships this year, namely
Tropicana Heights in Kajang, and Tropicana Aman, previously
known as Tropicana Canal City.
“The significant increase in the scale of our operations demands
sharper management and operational focus. Tropicana’s
core management team will be further strengthened
with these promotions and appointment. I am confident
that this dynamic and highly capable team will steer the
Group to greater success as we continue with our transformation
Corporation Berhad announced the sale approximately
308.72 acres of land to Eco World Development Group
part of the 1,172 acre Tropicana Aman (previously known
as Canal City land) which the Group acquired in April 2013.
The sale and purchase agreement is targeted for completion
by the second half of 2014, and is expected to generate a
net gain of approximately RM170 million for the Group.
This is expected to translate into incremental net earnings
per share of 12 sen for the current financial year ending 31
December 2014.
YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Danny Tan Chee Sing, Group Executive
Vice Chairman of Tropicana said, “As Master Developer
of Tropicana Aman, this transaction is significant in
enabling us to bring in a developer who can complement
our development approach in creating vibrant and unique
self-contained communities. This sale is also in line with
our transformation strategy to unlock the value of our sizeable
landbank, and monetise our assets to strengthen our
balance sheet. On top of enhancing earnings, the cash proceeds
from this disposal will further strengthen our delivery
platform and better position us for sustainable growth over
the medium to long term.”
According to YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Danny Tan, Tropicana
Aman will demonstrate Tropicana’s development DNA
where an integrated township will be created with a strong
emphasis on healthy lifestyle, green and sustainable architecture
and community living in a safe environment. The
conveniently accessible Tropicana Aman is strategically located
within the vibrant South Klang corridor and will be
launched in the second half of 2014.
AN INTERVIEW WITH ANGIE KOK
PARISIAN Chic
THE LOVE AND PASSION FOR PARISIAN FASHION IS WHAT DRIVES ANGIE KOK, DIRECTOR OF LA BON
FASHION GROUP TO BRING IN A STRING OF RENOWNED FRENCH LABELS TO KUALA LUMPUR.
Director of La Bon Fashion Group (M) Sdn Bhd, Angie Kok
is in love with all things Parisian from the way their clothes
are designed down to the tea they produce. As she puts it,
“I keep going back to France. I think my roots are there.”
There’s always something about the culture that fascinates
this feisty fashionista to go back to the ‘City of Lights’ for
more. Twenty eight year ago, Angie opened up her first
multi-brand boutique La Bon, ‘The Beautiful’ in French, at
City Square and has since brought in renowned labels from
France such as Givenchy, Kookai, Lanvin, Lancel, Thierry
Mugler, Morgan de Toi, Celio, and Korloff. We sat down
with the bubbly entrepreneur about her love for fashion
and all things Parisian.
S.W. How was it like growing up in Malacca?
A.K. “I grew up in a big family actually. I’m the eldest
amongst my siblings. Very happy go lucky. I was heavily
involved in debate classes, very outspoken too [laughs].”
Was it tough being the eldest?
“A lot of responsibilities. Maybe because I’m the eldest, I’m
able to run my own company. I always want to take care of
everyone.”
When did you first discover your love of fashion?
“I think it’s in me. I love beautiful things. The love and the
sense of wanting to be a beautiful woman created my love
for fashion. I want to look glamorous even to the day when
I depart from the world. Always look at your best. For example,
English actress Joan Collin is in her 80s now and is
still looking gorgeous!”
Tell me about your first boutique, La Bon.
“It began more than two and a half decades ago. We started
as a multi-brand boutique carrying labels from France and
Italy like Pinko and Surabaya. I travelled there quite often
and brought in a few pieces from each brand. The brands
were not haute couture but are famous brands over there,
beautiful brands.”
How was the response then?
“It was very well received. It so happened I was at the right
time and at the right place. People didn’t travel much back
then, so when there’s new a clothing line, they just buy. And
at that time, when you educate them, they were very much
accepting of the new.”➢
“Givenchy built my world.
It brought me the dreams
I had never dreamed of”
← How was it when you first got the call from LVMH
to carry Givenchy?
“Of course, it was wonderful. When they came to see us, it
was marvelous. I’m very fortunate to have a place at Starhill
Gallery. When Starhill heard about Givenchy, they gave us
a very beautiful lot. That’s when we’re there for 15 years.
We’re very happy with the brand. It was my first platform
to the world of French label. Givenchy built my world. It
brought me the dreams I had never dreamed of. Our company
then became very famous until today. There are a lot
of brands that have approached us but we are very selective.
Because when you grow a brand, it’s all with passion. You
have to build them like a baby and nurture them. Building a
brand is very tough. To nurture the brand to the highest is
one of the greatest challenges.”
Did you know anyone from LVMH beforehand?
“No, they just came to me. I always feel that I’m very, very
lucky and truly blessed. Although we may not be a very huge
group but we’ve worked with beautiful brands before, we
attend buying shows, and we go to Paris to see the glamour
of it all. Not everyone has the opportunity. We even see the
pre collections six to eight months before it’s launched.”
It must’ve been very exciting to see the collections beforehand.
Have you ever thought of designing your
own fashion label one day?
“One day, but not at the moment. There are just too many
things going on right now to keep me occupied.”
Which brand came after Givenchy?
“After Givenchy, we had Kookai because I love Kookai. It’s
something that you can wear everyday and you don’t need to
spend a bomb on it. It’s all very French, very sexy, very nice.”
Among the brands that are under your company right
now, is there one that is closest to your heart?
“I think all of my brands are closest to my heart. They cannot
be here for nothing.”
That’s true because you have to have a reason for
wanting to have these brands in the first place. Are
there any other brands in Paris that you’re thinking
of bringing over here?
“Yes, we’re in the midst of negotiating. But one thing is for
sure, we are going to open up a café selling premium teas
and chocolates from France.”➢
“Everything
happens for a reason.
And when it comes,
it comes at the right time
and the right place”
← Are you a tea enthusiast yourself?
“Yeah, I’ve been drinking tea for more than 20 years.”
And your favourite?
“Earl Grey.”
What is it that you enjoy doing while you’re in France?
“Relaxing at a café, drinking tea and having their pastries.”
I realise that you’re all about bringing the essence of
French culture to KL.
“Yes, that’s right. If I don’t bring, nobody will bring. So I
must bring [laughs]!”
When you’re bringing these French labels in, what is
the biggest challenge that you face?
“Understanding the French culture is the biggest challenge.
In Malaysia, sometimes the French way is not so acceptable.
For example, some dresses are too low cut, too sexy. It’s difficult.
But people will adapt to it after some time.”
What do you love about your work?
“To see the beauty, the glamour and the latest in the market.
I love to see the artistic side of the fashion industry. As
they say, fashion comes from the three fashion capitals of
the world – Paris, Milan and New York. I have to give my
kudos to Paris as Parisian style is very chic. I keep going back
to France. I think my roots are there.”
How would you describe your fashion style?
“Very French, very dainty and very sweet.”
Any fashion tips to share?
“Wear what is best for you. You don’t have to follow fashion
as long as it suits you and you’re comfortable in it. Not only
that, it gives you the confidence and makes you look good.”
What’s your philosophy in life?
“Be happy, contented and blessed because it will open your
eyes to many opportunities. Don’t plan many things and
stress yourself to get what you want. Take it easy because
everything happens for a reason.”
That’s right, and at the right time.
“Yes, I love this sentence. Everything happens for a reason. And
when it comes, it comes at the right time and the right place.”
What made you decide to stay in Tropicana Golf &
Country Resort?
“Thirteen years ago, I was passing by Tropicana and it was
like a peaceful haven because there were a lot of trees at the
time. There weren’t that many occupants around so it was
very serene. It felt like I was going to a countryside. My husband
is a golfer, so we’re all very happy with it. Moreover,
the security there is well done so we feel relieved whenever
we’re abroad.”
As this is the ‘beauty’ issue, in your opinion, what
makes a person beautiful?
“There’s inner beauty and outer beauty. When you do good
things, you’ll feel happy and then your outer will be very
calm. When you have inner beauty, it will give you a beautiful
outer beauty glow.”
and northern New South Wales, finger limes were an important
food source for indigenous Australians and enjoyed
THE GAME CHANGER
Mrs.
CARTER
BEYONCÉ KNOWLES REPRESENTS A CHANGE IN ATTITUDE THAT IS OCCURRING AROUND
THE WORLD. THE CHANGE IS SUBTLE BUT IT IS DEFINITELY APPARENT.
Few African American women have succeeded
on such a global level in the music industry like
Beyoncé Knowles. What makes Mrs. Carter so
WORDS JAGO
PHOTOGRAPH GETTY
high profile entertainer husband Jay Z of not
doing enough with their status or wealth for
the progress of African Americans.
important today? Girls of every race, religion and ethnicity
adore her to such a huge scale that some suggest that Beyoncé
isn’t simply a beautiful singer, but far more. What has
been proposed is that she is in fact a bridge between black
and white cultures. There are great examples of those who
are more important to black music like Billie Holiday and
Aretha Franklin. Both of these musicians struggled during a
time when blacks in America were experiencing the height
of persecution.
Right now, you will find a number of arguments as to
whether Beyoncé has had a positive or negative impact on
the lives of young woman. What is undisputable is that
she is a world-class artist and performer. So the challenge
we face is to understand what her responsibilities are as an
iconic public figure and who has the right to say what these
responsibilities should be. After all, she is an entertainer, not
a politician or religious figure.
If we were to look at her from a superficial point of view
and simplify our study of this woman, the arguments would
go something like this; In the first camp, we have those
against the promotion of ‘flawless’ beauty (also the title of
a recent Beyoncé song) to adolescent girls at the most impressionable
stage in their lives. Bill O’Reilly of Fox News
describes one of her music videos as “devastating” and “exploitive
garbage”. She has also been accused along with her
The second view is that Beyoncé represents the strong
woman from around the world, those who are or aspire to
be highly motivated, athletic, artistic, dedicated and beautiful.
To many, she is as American as apple pie and the personification
of the American dream.
I believe it is a question of perspective. This argument
can be applied to many celebrities in the public eye, so why
choose Beyoncé as our icon? To qualify for this particular
feature, the person in question needs to be more than simply
great. They need to be a game changer, someone who
has had an impact on society beyond a trend or headlines in
tabloids. Not only this, their influence must be consistent.
What Beyoncé represents is one of the key figures in what
writer and entrepreneur Steve Stoute describes as The Tanning
of America, a book that analyses how hip-hop created a
culture that rewrote the rules of a New Economy.
Tanning is defined as “a mentality that no longer determines
your ethnicity, no longer determines what drives you
spiritually or culturally, [that] comes from the shared values
of other people.”
This is to say that irrespective of your ethnicity, income
bracket or religion (typically the three big dividers in western
society), you can be attracted to an entertainer like Beyoncé.
This is a new colour-blind mentality that has become
a global phenomenon.
IT IS REGARDED AS THE IDEAL BLEND OF PASSION AND PERFORMANCE, EVEN AMONGST A FIELD
REDEFINE SUCH IMPECCABLY HIGH STANDARDS?
THE FERRARI 458 ITALIA IS REGARDED AS THE IDEAL BLEND OF PASSION AND PERFORMANCE,
EVEN AMONGST A FIELD OF TRULY EXCEPTIONAL SUPERCARS. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE
458 SPECIALE MANAGES TO REDEFINE SUCH IMPECCABLY HIGH STANDARDS?
In the last few months, it seems that the exotic car world
has been brimming with talk of hypercars. Cars like the La-
Ferrari, the McLaren P1, and the Porsche 918 Spyder: these
cars eclipse the “regular” supercars that we’ve known and
loved for so many years. It’s hard to imagine labelling a supercar
as common, but they seem downright mass market
in comparison to these limited-run, ultra exclusive models.
That doesn’t mean that these supercars are neglected by
their parent companies. No, in the name of progress it is
necessary to refresh and re-engineer a car as time passes.
The Ferrari 458 Italia was launched back in 2009, and brilliant
as it is, it is also well into its production lifespan and in
dire need of something to keep it current and entertaining.
Enter the 458 Speciale. At the heart of this machine is the
same V8 engine from the 458 Italia, in all its 4.5 litres of
fury. In technical terms it gets a little more power, pushed
up by 35 PS for a total of 605 PS at a stratospheric 9000 rpm.
Torque figures remain the same with a maximum torque of
540 Nm at 6000 rpm, meaning all the work to increase power
has been in reducing torque fall-off towards the redline.
The 458 Speciale also breaks the horsepower-per-litre record
held by the 458, with an impressive 134 PS/litre power
output. The century sprint is smashed in roughly 3 seconds,
taking only another 6.1 seconds to double that speed. In
context, the 458 Speciale hits 200 kilometres per hour in
the time it takes for the average passenger car to breach 100
kilometres per hour.
In a time when electronic driving aids and computer controls
are becoming exceedingly tight, Ferrari has decided to
take a swing in the other direction with their revised traction
control system. The 458 Speciale marks the introduction
of Ferrari’s SSC, or Side Slip angle Control system. The
system works in tandem with the existing F1-Trac traction
control system and E-Diff locking differential which proved
their effectiveness with the 458 Italia.
Using unique programming optimised for oversteer, the
SSC is designed to control braking and power delivery to
achieve high angle drifts in a progressive manner. The re-
sult, put simply, is a system that can make most anyone an
expert in the art of controlled sliding. Rest assured that the
system will still rein you in if you’re on the verge of careening
off the road or track, as any competent stability control
system would do.
Much like any performance car development, one mark of
engineering progress is weight reduction. Exotic materials
are the norm, with the interior sporting carbon fibre panels
in an effort to cut down on unnecessary weight. Glass thickness
has been reduced to trim the fat, and the rear windscreen
is now fabricated from Lexan as opposed to regular
glass. No heavy electric seats to be found here: both driver
and passenger get racing bucket seats to hold them in place
as the car hustles through the bends. The Speciale specific
5-spoke wheels are forged, reducing weight by another 3 kilograms
at each wheel, making for a total weight reduction
of roughly 90 kilograms over the regular 458 Italia.
But that’s enough tech talk. While the 458 Speciale is designed
to be a scalpel on the track and on the road, so too is
it a piece of art in motion. Form and function work together
in this case: on top of the already sleek, sharp exterior is
an active aerodynamics package that is designed to channel
air more effectively around the 458 Speciale. For attacking
those sharp corners and bends, the little flaps and vanes adjust
to give you maximum downforce, improving grip and
stability. Screaming down a straight stretch of road, the
aerodynamics once again adjusts to reduce drag and improve
acceleration.
All of these innovations are hidden away, blending into
the curvaceous metalwork and only coming into play when
you need them. Subtle redesigns to the front bumper and
rear diffuser have given the 458 Speciale a more aggressive
demeanour: it may not be enough for the average passerby
to take notice of, but car enthusiasts will be able to spot the
differences at a distance.
And yet, for all these improvements, the 458 Speciale remains
distinctly a Ferrari. It remains a Ferrari in the sense
that it evokes: whether that may be a passion for driving, or
simply an appreciation for the car as an art form. It has long
been thought that the folly of cars like the McLaren 12C lay
in their sterile, tech-focused nature, but it seems that the
458 Speciale has managed to maintain a good balance of raw
Italian passion and potent technological improvements.
When the 458 Italia was released, it represented a large
step forward in Ferrari’s model development. When you
look at it on paper, the 458 Speciale receives only minor
improvements: slightly more power, slightly stickier tyres,
a slightly quicker gearbox, slightly better aerodynamics.
While these are not massive changes, they all count towards
improving lap times on the track without compromising
everyday driveability, and giving drivers that extra edge to
push the envelope. It’s possible that this 458 Speciale may be
the only model people distinctly remember from this generation
of Ferraris, simply for being the sharpest and the
brightest, and the most speciale of the lot.
EXPERIENCE CANADA’S MOST AMAZING GOLF AND SCENERY AT FAIRMONT CHATEAU
WHISTLER SITUATED IN BRITISH COLUMBIA’S FAMOUS WHISTLER VALLEY.
If an exotic golf vacation appeals to you after months of heat, a
special offer at what has been voted as Canada’s #1 golf course
by Conde Nast Traveller could be just the ticket. In 1993, when
the course first opened, it was ranked as the worldwide ‘Best
New Golf Course of the Year.’
“Whistler Resort has something for everyone. For the
golfer to the non-golfer alike, everyone will have a great
time!” said Nick Droulis, Fairmont’s Director of Golf.
Fairmont Chateau Whistler Resort offers the best of the
Canadian Rockies in terms of breathtaking scenery at every
turn, with a five-star chateau lifestyle experience, combined
with what’s been rated as one of the world’s top 125 golf
courses. Family activities are also unrivalled, with dozens of
activities within a half hour drive of the resort.
The scenery at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Resort is
distinctive to Canada and draws in visitors – including athletes,
politicians like Condoleeza Rice and celebrities – from
around the world.
a g o l f c o u r s e l i k e n o o t h e r – Initially the area became
world famous for its ski resorts, and later added golf
and many other outdoor activities to its roster to attract visitors
year round. Located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain,
the wildlife and glorious spring weather at Whistler
combine to provide visitors an unforgettable experience.
“The draw is it is a very unique golf course in our part
of the world. The course runs up Blackcomb Mountain,
with its granite rock faces. We have glacial streams running
through the golf course and some of the best views of
Whistler Valley,” said Nick Droulis.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. the course incorporates
the best of nature with some unique technological innovations.
Golf Digest rated the Fairmont Whistler course Four
and a Half stars and Links Magazine dubbed it “Mountain
Golfing at its Finest.” The course is a par 72, Audubon-certified
course. Caddies aren’t used at Whistler, but each golf cart
is equipped with its own GPS system for ease of navigation. ➢
Clockwise from bottom left – The clubhouse at night; The view from Hole 18;
Tee off to a spectacular view at the Fairmont Golf Club
← Technically, the course is unique. Droulis explains, “We
have a 400 foot elevation change between the 1st and 4th
holes, and the peak is at 13th tee. This makes for some dramatic
shots and dramatic backdrops, with the mountain in
the background.” Golf carts are mandatory. For those who
like variety in their golfing vacations, there are four championship
golf courses within a 20-minute drive of the resort.
There are some unusual features at Whistler. “The nice
thing about the golf course is there are no houses. You are
playing on a mountain and you’re in a forest.” The views,
given the elevation, are spectacular. But despite the elevation,
the course, he reassures, “is not overly difficult.”
The course opens in early May every year, “waiting for
the snow to clear off golf course. We go from a snow-covered
course, with sometimes 15 feet of snow this time of
year, to lush green fairways!” explains Nick Droulis.
Visitors should not be too nervous about the notoriously
cold Canadian weather. “Our weather is actually very good
here. The best months to play are July to September, as you
are guaranteed best conditions. You will experience high
teens to mid 20s in the summer, which is very comfortable
with no humidity.”
g o l f p a c k a g e s a n d f a m i l y f u n – The Fairmont Chateau
offers unlimited golf packages. Nick Droulis explains,
“our hotel guests get complimentary rental clubs, unlimited
replays booked on the day of play, and unlimited use of the
practice facility. Juniors 16 and under get to play free.” This
package is available until 13 October 2014, and rates begin
at only USD189 CAD per person.
According to Nick Droulis, “May is a great month for
skiing and golfing. We even host the Whistler triathlon,
where contestants compete in skiing, golfing and biking in
the same day! We have some of the best mountain biking
in the world. Hiking is fantastic, and there are going all
over the valley and one even going up the Whistler Blackcomb
Mountain.”
The resort itself, said Nick Droulis, “is like a ski chalet.
The clubhouse is a small chalet set in the side of the mountain.
There is a natural kind of feel for the whole resort. It is
high class with a bit of the Whistler nature!”
Although you might think that the best views would be
on the award-winning golf course, the spectacular vista at
the resort’s restaurants is equally impressive. The Vida Spa
is a great place to unwind after a long day on the links, or
for non-golfers.
Nick Droulis explains the appeal of the resort to families.
“We have world-class shopping. For the non-golfer we
have an abundance of spas to keep everyone happy. There
are beaches on lakes, biking, and even kids play activities
near the hotel with bouncy castles, mini golf etc. We have
everything our family visitors could want!”
t h e f a i r m o n t t o u c h – The chain which has built
the Fairmont knows what it is doing. It has won multiple
awards from US News & World Report, Conde Nast Traveler,
Travel + Leisure and Celebrated Living. It has received a 4 Diamond
hotel rating from the AAA/CAA, and is a 4-Green
Key Certified Hotel from the Hotel Association of Canada.
Nick Droulis explains, “Between our great restaurants,
shops and activities, we are the best all around golf resort.
We have been ranked as the number one golf resort
in North America! We are a great resort for families and
golfers alike.”
No More
Chubby
Cheeks
Re-defi ne you face and get that
sculpted visage with the simple
Buccal Fat Extraction procedure.
– Dr. Mohamad Nasir Zahari, Medical Director of Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre
In a time where defined, chiseled
profiles are vastly desired, a cosmetic
procedure called Buccal Fat Extraction
is making those sculpted cheeks a
possibility. This procedure will give you
the illusion of an elongated face and
even highlight those cheekbones for a
more distinctive sharp visage.
Before diving into the details of this
removal operation, let us understand this
adipose tissue and its function. Buccal
fat pad, otherwise known as Bichat’s fat
pad (named after Marie-Francois Xavier
Bichat – French anatomist and the father
of modern histology) serves a role in our
face anatomy.
According to Dr. Mohamad Nasir Zahari,
Medical Director of Beverly Wilshire
Medical Centre, buccal fat fills deep
tissues spaces in the face as well as
cushion important structures from
external force impulsion or extrusion
of muscle contraction.
“In short, it is this ‘cushion’ that
gives volume to your cheek, resulting
in a round and plump appearance
(or humorously known as ‘chipmunk
cheeks’),” he added. “It is part and
parcel of a person’s face identity.”
Why do some people have naturally
fuller cheeks than others are due to
factors like family history and ethnic
background. That is why there are
people who have the ideal weight but
still look fuller in the face like they have
something hidden in their mouth.
But with Buccal Fat Extraction,
attaining a slimmer face with no
scaring can be a reality.
DO YOU MAKE
THE CUT?
This procedure is a great choice for
those who have excessive plumpness
around the cheek area that is not caused
by trauma, accident or past surgeries. It
is also a good choice to enhance your
profile and jaw bones.
While buccal fat extraction is a very
straight-forward and low risk procedure,
a preliminary consultation with an
experienced and certified cosmetic
surgeon is very important. But this is
all determined through consultation
with the surgeon.
“It can be a standalone procedure and
is one of the ways to help patients slim
down their face,” he explained. “But it
is not suitable for patients with multiple
problems like double-chins and strong
muscles – which also contribute to their
overall plumpness as they may require
various combined methods to achieve
their desired cosmetic outcome.
A combination of methods is only
necessary if there is an excessive amount
of fat that cannot be reduced through
buccal fat removal procedure alone.”
stresses the Plastic, Reconstructive and
Cosmetic Surgeon; armed with over 20
years of experience.
Buccal fat along the cheek, highlighted in yellow

WHAT ACTUALLY
GOES DOWN
Dr. Nasir explained that the buccal fat
pad is easily accessed through a small,
horizontal incision – about 1.5cm long
on the inner part of the patient’s cheeks.
The fat pad is then gently teased out of
the incision, weighing about 20 to 30
grams each.
Performed under local anesthesia, the
procedure usually discards about twothird
(approximately 60 to 70 percent) of
the fat before the remaining buccal fat is
inserted back into the opening slit. The
remaining one-third of the fat is ideal to
help prevent an old sunken appearance.
No suction similar to liposuction is done
for this procedure. “Unlike stomach fat
which is more diffused in appearance
and can be eliminated through
liposuction; removing buccal fat using
suction method possesses a higher risk
of rupturing the blood vessels.”
The incision is then closed with
absorbent sutures,” Dr. Nasir said,
adding that post-surgery effect such
as swelling is temporary and requires
a longer time to subside while wound
healing only starts after a week. “That’s
why you will only see the end result
after two weeks.”
POST
SURGERY CARE
After the surgery, patients are limited to
soft food diet and are strongly advised
against strenuous activities to avoid
affecting the wound’s healing process
for the first 24 to 48 hours.
Besides prescribing patients with
antibiotics and mild painkiller, frequent
gargling with antiseptic mouth wash
to prevent infection during the first
week post-surgery care is also
equally important.
“The pain – with tolerance level
from mild to moderate – may be
unbearable only on the first two days,”
he explained, citing that the risk of
infection is only less than two percent.
“But some ice packs could help to
relieve the pain if patients are worried.”
Are you are a suitable
candidate for buccal fat
removal? Please call in
to schedule a consultation
session with their experts
at 1800 88 8802.
“The volume of
buccal fat may change
throughout a person’s
life. As we aged, fat cells
on any part of our body
may shrink according
to the proportion of
a person’s weight.”
The incision is done inside the mouth
which means there is no visible external
scarring and the whole operation takes
about 30 minutes to conduct.
Extracting Tooth No. 8
– Dr Yoganjali Dorairaj, General Dentistry at Beverly Wilshire Dental
Our wisdom tooth
grows at different
rates and different
ages. While some
people have an
unproblematic
growth, for those
who experience
nagging pains
and frequent
inflammations, it is
time to see a dentist
for that check-up.
DO I NEED
EXTRACTION?
The wisdom tooth or ‘Tooth No.
8’ usually starts erupting in early
adulthood between the ages of
16 to 23. Some people are lucky
that their wisdom tooth erupts in
a clean vertical manner without
compromising the adjacent tooth. But
for some, various problems can arise
in the growth of one’s wisdom tooth
like not having enough room to grow
properly which can lead to it coming
out sideways or at a wrong angle.
Although some people in their 30s
may not have experienced the
eruption of wisdom tooth, dental
specialists urge patients to take note
on such early signifi cant symptom.
That’s because some research
have highlighted that wisdom
tooth extraction procedure may be
tougher as one gets older due to the
hardened bone structures.
Dr. Yoganjali Dorairaj, Head of
General Dentistry of Beverly Wilshire
Dental Centre says, besides painful
and swollen gums, food stuck in
between the second and third molar
can also lead to terrible halitosis
problem (bad breath).
THE FOUR
IMPACTIONS
Wisdom tooth impactions are
generally classifi ed under four
categories. One of them is mesioangular
impaction. This is a
condition where the growth of the
tooth is angled towards the front
of the mouth and pushes against
the adjacent tooth. This is the most
common type of impaction which
often allows food and bacteria to be
trapped under the gums, resulting
in a host of potential symptoms –
ranging from recurring pain, tooth
decay, swelling and even infection.
VERTICAL
Another problem is vertical tooth
impaction where the tooth grows
vertically but the growing progress is
hampered by insuffi cient gum space.
Again, this condition eventually
contributes to possible pain, infection
and also tooths decay.

Patients’ whose wisdom teeth are still intact
are advised to always keep the area clean
CHECKING
IT OUT
HORIZONTAL
The third type of impaction is
horizontal tooth impaction. This is
when the wisdom tooth is growing
parallel or slants towards the gum
line at 90 degrees. In this case, the
tooth generally grows straight into the
roots of neigbouring molars.
The fourth type of wisdom tooth
impaction is disto-angular where
tooth is angled towards the back of
the mouth. While it is a rare type of
impaction, disto-angular impacted
wisdom tooth is often deemed as
“one of the most diffi cult surgical
cases,” explained Dr Yoganjali.
X-rays are used to evaluate wisdom
tooth, its position and to detect any
impactions. However, there is more
to it than just looking at the x-ray.
Your dentist will then have to take a
look at the nerve fi bers. According to
Dr. Yoganjali, precautions are taken
to avoid the risk of damaging the
inferior dental nerve that runs along
the jawbone. Injury to that nerve can
cause temporary numbness of the
chin or lower lip.
MINOR ORAL
SURGERY
So, what are the standard wisdom
tooth extractions procedures like?
Generally, after the area of concern
is injected with local anesthesia, the
dentist will proceed to clean the area
with saline solution.
“The tooth is then removed with
an ‘elevator’,” she said, describing
the minor oral surgery. “The bones
in some cases might need to be
guttered, cleaned and confi rmed
that there are no sharp edges before
medication and sutures are applied.”
Recovery from swelling and
wound healing takes over a week.
Therefore, patients are advised to
return to the dental centre for postoperative
review.
As a take home message,
patients’ whose wisdom teeth are
still intact are advised to always
keep the area clean.
CHAPTER FIVE
THE TASTE
THE COOKBOOK. THE DISHES.
THE DRINKS.
PAGES
THE NAUGHTY CHEF
FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS, EXECUTIVE CHEF SOMBAT KOKASEMKUL HAS BEEN DISHING OUT
DEVILISHLY CREATIVE THAI-EUROPEAN CUISINES AT NEO TAMARIND, AND HE DOESN’T SEEM
TO BE SLOWING DOWN ANYTIME SOON.
WORDS LAI SWEE WEI
PHOTOGRAPHS SOOPHYE
Located on a hilltop along Jalan Sultan Ismail,
Neo Tamarind boasts a zen-like ambiance
that will make you feel as if you’re
dining in a secluded holiday resort. Hidden
by green foliage, the restaurant is semi-open
air with an interior that’s rustic-luxe and
dramatic. Expect hypnotic liquid walls, a colossal
chandelier and a gorgeous long bar to
entertain you all night long.
Open from 6pm to 12 midnight, this is
the place where imaginative Thai-European
cuisine comes to life as led by Thai Executive
Chef Sombat Kokasemkul also known
as ‘the naughty chef’.
Born in Bangkok, Chef Sombat began
his career 18 years ago as a helper at the
four-star Mercure Bangkok Siam. The
youngest of three boys, he grew up in a
family of food enthusiasts. “My father is
a chef who can cook Chinese, Western
and Thai dishes, while my eldest brother
is a baker,” said Chef Sombat. So it’s no
surprise that he too would follow in their
footsteps to chefdom.
After four years at Mercure Bangkok
Siam, he ventured on to other renowned
hotels in Bangkok, absorbing everything
he can like a sponge. And he enjoyed every
bit of it. He was then taken under Master
Chef Thiti Thammanatr’s wing in 2007 before
arriving in Kuala Lumpur, specifically
at Neo Tamarind, five years ago.
Curious about his childhood, I asked how
it was like growing up in Bangkok and he
cheekily replied, “I never grow up. I’ve just
been growing down!” Undoubtedly, this
chef has a great sense of humour and his
playfulness extends well on to his dishes.
Specialising in Thai-European cuisine,
Chef Sombat’s ‘guess-tronomy’ makes dining
both a fun and visual experience. He not
only produces beautiful modern Thai dishes
that are delicious but puts a spin to it, which
has made him ‘the naughty chef’ he is today.
One of Neo Tamarind’s specialties lies in
their hot and cold appetisers, so Chef Sombat
has prepared two of their best starters to
help stir up an appetite.
From left — Grilling the Eryngii
mushrooms; A drizzle of truffle oil;
Plating up; The final presentation
The first is a cold one – Scallop Carpaccio.
Fresh scallops and apple slices inter layer one
another and are placed on top of an orangish
sauce. It’s then topped off with black pepper,
salmon roe and Japanese soybeans with
a drizzle of black ink salt on the side.
There’s a method to savouring this dish as
Chef Sombat explains, “First, cut the scallop
and apple in half. Then, put the orange sauce
on top and try it. After that, try the other
half with the black sauce.” The semi-chew
and fruity crisp sensation pairs well with the
orangish sauce with its bold spiciness and
sourness, while the latter has a lovely sweet
flavour to counter balance the heat and tartness
of the earlier. Chef Sombat truly enjoys
educating his diners in order for them to
understand and appreciate the combination
of flavours.
I asked about his appetiser, main course
and dessert recommendations for first-time
customers and he said, “It depends on what
they like.” For him, it’s about discovering
their likes and dislikes before recommending
anything. When he’s not busy in the
kitchen, you can find him out and about
greeting his customers and building relationships
with them. He even goes a step
further by offering each of his diners a complimentary
shot of his homemade sake at the
end of their dinner. Expect flavours such as
lemon, plum and chilli among others. He
said, “It’s for them to enjoy and also it’s good
for digestion after a heavy meal!”
Meanwhile, the second appetiser is served
hot – Mushroom. Grilled Eryngii mushrooms
served over a bed of rocket leaves
and topped with tomato confit, Parmesan
cheese and balsamic reduction. The sweetness
of the tomato confit complimented the
lovely smoky flavour of the juicy mushroom
perfectly. Simple to prepare and tastes absolutely
heavenly. If there’s one ingredient
he swears by in all of his dishes, it would be
Himalayan salt. He described it as “not too
salty and slightly sweet.”
I then asked him what his favourite dish
was and true enough, he had difficulty
choosing. But when it came down to his
least favourite, he quickly pointed out “sweet
brain”. He explained that animal brains such
as deer, rabbit and lamb are commonly
sold in Thailand. “It’s usually cooked with ➢
RECIPE
MUSHROOM
Ingredients
2 pieces of Eryngii mushroom
1 red tomato
1 stack of scallion
10g of Parmesan cheese
2g of black pepper
20ml of olive oil
15g of rocket salad
3ml of balsamic reduction
3g of Himalayan rock salt
1ml of white truffle oil
The method
STEP 1: Prepare tomato confit
1 – Boil the red tomato for 10
seconds and then soak it in a bowl
of cold water to cool it down.
2 – Peel off the tomato skin and cut
into four pieces. Remove the seed
and dice the tomato. Gently dab
with a piece of paper towel to make
sure the tomato is not too wet.
3 – Mix the diced tomato, olive oil,
salt and chopped scallion in a bowl.
STEP 2: Prepare balsamic reduction
1 – Add white sugar in a hot pot
and boil it until it caramelises.
2 – Once the sugar is caramelised,
pour the balsamic vinegar and
further boil it until it turns into
thicker texture.
3 – Leave it to cool for 1 hour.
STEP 3: Prepare grilled Eryngii
1 – Cut the mushroom into half and
score the surface.
2 – Add in salt, black pepper and
olive oil and grill it.
3 – The mushroom should be
cooked once water starts appearing
from its surface.
STEP 4: Prepare rocket salad
1 – Mix the rocket salad with salt,
pepper and olive oil.
STEP 5: Plate up!
1 – Place the tomato confit and
mushroom on top of the salad.
2 – Pour the white truffle oil and
flame it.
3 – Lastly, add in the balsamic
reduction on top of the mushroom
and sprinkle some Parmesan
cheese shavings.
“He not only produces
beautiful modern Thai
dishes that are delicious
but puts a spin to it,
which has made him ‘the
naughty chef’ he is today.”
← brandy, salt and pepper. It smells good and
people like the taste, but I don’t. The texture
of the brain is too creamy!” he said whilst
scrunching his nose at the thought of it.
When it came to teaching his juniors, his
number one advice to them would strike
anyone as true which is to “cook as if you’re
cooking for your mother and father.” A saying
like this would encourage anyone to do
their best and cook from the heart.
One thing that’s obvious is that Chef Sombat
puts his heart and soul into his food, and
it’s cooked with a lot of love. This is one
Thai that certainly has the right touch to
make even the simplest of ingredients spectacular.
Watch out this May as Chef Sombat
will introduce 10 new dishes to their current
menu.
DEFINING BEAUTY – When we think of
beauty, the first few things that come to
mind are often aesthetic related. We look at
things like a person’s clothing, accessories
and make-up as they tend to be the statement
makers that catch our eyes. However,
we need to think twice when it comes to
the real definition of beauty; is fashion and
the way one is dolled-up really it?
It may sound cliché, but we have all heard
that beauty comes from within. And with
that said, health is one of the main factors.
Leading a healthy lifestyle plays a huge role
when it comes to beauty and the perfect example
would be having a good complexion.
A balanced diet gives us the nutrients and
vitamins we need to keep us in top form.
IT IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK – Popular
choices are usually sugary drinks and coffee
as they provide an energy kick and are
easily accessible. However, these drinks do
not carry any health benefits as too much
sugar can lead to diabetes and weight gain.
It can be difficult to break habits and accustom
our lifestyles to a healthier option due
to packed schedules and lack of time, but
taking baby steps is the key. A simple, efficient
and popular method is juicing. When
it comes to juicing, you get a concentrated
cup of goodness in a short span of time.
JUICE
RECIPES
When it comes
to juicing, you get a
concentrated cup of
goodness in a short
span of time
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT – Juicing has
become a preferred choice for many people
due to the convenience, simplicity and
benefits of it. There is a long list of juice
recipes available and you may be able to
find a personal favourite combination –
experimenting with different fruits can
give you an idea. Some of the most commonly
used fruits are oranges which are
high in vitamin C, apples which are a
great source of fibre and berries which are
packed with antioxidants.
It does not stop there as you can also
juice vegetables. Popular vegetables to pop
in your juicer are carrots which are high in
vitamin A, celery which is a superb fighter
against cholesterol and lowers blood pressure,
and cucumber which does wonders
for hydration.
THE JUICER – With the popularity of juicing
increasing, so is the selection of juicers
on the market. The two main types of juicers
are centrifugal and masticating juicers.
Centrifugal juicers use quick, rotating
motions with speeds ranging from 2,000
to 14,000 rpm. Some positive points to
take note of is that they work swiftly and
are able to cut up larger and tougher fruits
which saves preparation time.
Meanwhile, masticating juicers squeeze
and press the juice out of the fruit or vegetable
at a slower speed of an average of 80
rpm. Although it is slower, it is noticeably
quieter and prevents oxidisation due to not
allowing much air into the juicing process.
The Breville 800JEB Juicer Advanced
Pro has been hailed by users and retailers
as one of the best juicers in the world. This
centrifugal juicer has a food pusher which
allows you to fit whole fruits and vegetables
down the wide feed tube so you do
not have to cut them up, a powerful motor
of 1,500 watts, a large capacity and a hassle-free
cleaning system.
LIVE THE POLO LIFESTYLE
LA MARTINA, PAVILION KL
Wednesday, 26 February 2014
La Martina hosted an in-store customer cocktail event
at the La Martina boutique, Pavilion KL in collaboration
with Maserati & GlenGrant. To celebrate the
La Martina Maserati Capsule Collection, Naza Italia
displayed the Maserati Quattroporte at the event. Furthermore,
the Spring Summer 14 Maserati Capsule
Collection was created to emphasise the sporty personality
of both the brands with the symbolic trident
visible on the collection. The shades of red, navy and
white are widely used in the Maserati Collection as
it is the core colours of Maserati. While some guests
were socialising and mingling away, other guests were
enthralled by the capsule collection. The evening was
filled with guests enjoying an array of Argentine inspired
canapés and a selection of the finest Malbec
wines as well as GlenGrant’s Single Malt Whiskey.
The night kicked up a notch when songstress, Mathilde
filled the air with her soulful voice. Guests left with
a special door gift in hand, a customised polo ball and
a horse shoe with their names creatively written on
it, which signifies good luck for the year of the horse.
The Supermum
AN INTERVIEW BY AISHAH AZALI
International
supermodel and
principal of her own
modelling academy,
Amber Chia Academy,
Amber Chia has been
making a stamp in the
modelling world with
her beauty as well as her
entrepreneurship skills.
Here, this doting mother
of one shares a little bit
about her passions, her
dreams and her guilty
pleasures.
What are the best perks
about being a model?
“Being a model has always
been my dream, and being
able to do it for a living is
the greatest perk for me as
I really enjoy what I do.”
Do you watch model
searching reality shows
like Asia’s Next Top
Model or anything else?
“Whenever I have the time,
or if it happens to be on air
when I’m flipping through
the television, I do watch
Asia’s Next Top Model.
I was even a guest judge
on one of the episodes on
Season 2.”
What is a local food that
you love but is guilty to
eat sometimes?
“Nasi lemak.”
What would be your
dream fashion house or
brand to work with?
“Not so much of a fashion
house or brand, but I want
to be a Victoria Secret
Angel – I believe that this is
the dream of all, if not most,
models! Also, I would love
to be on the cover of Vogue
Italia magazine.”
What are your other
passions besides modelling?
“My three and half year old
son Ashton Wong – he’s the
apple of my eye!”
What is the first thing
you do when you wake
up in the morning?
“When I open my eyes in
the morning and see my son
and husband next to me, I
am grateful and I will thank
God for my family, and for
blessing me with this life,
before proceeding to spend
some quality morning
moments with my son.”
Where is your favourite
place for a holiday?
“New York.”
You have a modelling
academy under your
belt, what are your hopes
for the young aspiring
models under your wing?
“I strive to find the next
supermodel and/or top
model of Malaysia through
Amber Chia Academy.”
If you could go shopping
with any celebrity in the
world, who would it be?
“My idol Angelina Jolie.”
What is next for
Amber Chia?
“Next up for me is to
continue working hard
and expanding my
businesses. Also, so long
as there are any demands
for me to model, I will
keep on modelling as that
is and will always be my
foremost love!”
