Askanything PETS How can I really take care of pet fish so they don’t die immediately? The two starter models for pet fish are bettas and comet goldfish, which you can find at pet stores. When cared for properly, bettas live four to five years, and goldfish live around 15 years. To give your fish a long, healthy life, first, get the right size tank: A single fish needs at least five gallons. Fish excrete into water— feces and ammonia (their urine) build up and become fatally toxic if you don’t keep the water clean. So run a simple all-in-one filter and aerator and, once a month, use a siphon hose from the pet store to remove 30 percent of the water and replace it with clean H 2 O. (Don’t dump out the whole aquarium; there are beneficial microorganisms that build up on the glass and in the gravel.) Remember to add a water dechlorinator or conditioner drops to the new water each time—almost all tap water has a form of chlorine in it that can suffocate fish within a few hours. And don’t buy too big a tub of fish food. You want to use it up in six months or the vitamin levels drop.
