who have benefited since joining. If you want to improve
your health and fitness whilst at the same time meeting new
people, go along to the Library every Monday morning from
9.30am. The walkers leave at 10am for either a 60 or 90
walk in the beautiful countryside around Milnrow and
Newhey.
Milnrow Brass Band are appealing for local people to get
involved in fundraising which is needed for their forthcoming
appearances including the National Brass Band
Championships Finals at the Royal Albert Hall in October.
Another excellent 'From the Archives' article from Gary
Heywood Everettt focuses on 'The Angel' which, until the
1960's, was situated at the place where Manchester Rd has
its junction with The Esplanade and at the entrance to
Broadfield Park. The Angel was reputed to have been a
regular meeting place for the people of Rochdale and
represented a gateway point into the town centre .
Traditional Acupuncture: a natural
approach to good health
As the sole owner of Valley Acupuncture, Louise has enjoyed seven
successful years in business and has recently refurbished her clinic. The
natural approach of acupuncture means patients are often keen to try
a drug free option to improve their health. Over the years, Louise has
treated patients with general health problems, pain, injury and
conditions experienced in pregnancy. There also continues to be a
growing interest in patients seeking support during natural fertility and
assisted reproductive technology, with some fertility clinics actually
recommending acupuncture to their patients. During the spring and
summer months, treatment can be also helpful with conditions such as
hay fever. As a member of the British Acupuncture Council, Louise is
recognised by some private health insurers, so it`s worth checking your
policy to see if you are covered. If you require professional advice about
how traditional acupuncture may help you, or wish to book an
appointment please call 07903 851856 or email Louise at
“THANK YOU - I'M NOT GOING
ANYWHERE” - COUNCILLOR ANDY KELLY
Councillor Andy Kelly has pledged to continue his efforts for the people of Milnrow, Newhey and
Ogden, following the General Election. Despite being unsuccessful in the General Election, the
campaigning councillor has kept his promise to continue to fight to protect green belt in The Pennines, to
make the area safer and says his will continue to fight to get a better deal from Rochdale.
Andy, who came third in the
General Election, behind Labour
and the Conservatives improved
his position from fourth to third.
He says the bulk of his votes
came from places like here and
Healey and Shawclough. He
said, "Firstly, thank you for the
great support I received from
local people. It was greatly
appreciated. It soon became
apparent though that the
national fight between Jeremy
Corbyn's Labour and Theresa
May's Conservatives changed
how people voted. Many
people put local issues to one
side and voted for the party
they thought had a chance of
being in Government."
Andy continued, "The General
Election came as a shock to
everybody. It came at least 2
years early for the Liberal
Democrats. We are half way
through a rebuilding process.
The General Election was a
huge help for us though. We
now have more members and
activists than for a generation.
42
Visit our website www.streetwisemag.co.uk for all the info about the Streetwise magazines

This is especially true around here. People saw
the work we've done to protect our green belt,
how we voted against Labour's 34% pay rise
and how we stand up to Labour and fight for our
area. I said during the election that when the
dust settles I wouldn't be going anywhere. I will
be hitting the streets shortly to continue to do
my job as a Councillor alongside Councillor Irene
Davidson."
Andy has pledged to continue to fight to protect
green belt in The Pennines. Regular
STREETWISE readers will know how our area
mobilised against plans to build on our green
belt late last year and early this year.
Thousands of you returned letters, signed
petitions and attended public meetings. This
had a major impact and housing plans, the
biggest since the Second World War are now
being looked at again by the powers that be.
Councillor Kelly said, "Whilst we welcome the
fact that the original plans look like they have
been withdrawn - we must not rest on our
laurels. We need to make the case that our
green spaces are not free for development. I
moved here 20 odd years ago, to bring up my
children because I love the place. I love the fact
that within 5 minutes of any part of Milnrow
and Newhey you can be walking fields, climbing hills and the rest. I and others will not sit back and let them be threatened
again."
Councillor Irene Davidson said, "I am proud of Andy. In debates he spoke about our precious green belt, he spoke of improving
public transport in The Pennines and much more. His passion for our area shone through. The fact that so many people locally
voted him just goes to show how much people appreciate his efforts."
RIDE, ENJOY,
PRESERVE, PROMOTE
Milnrow&Newhey Bridleways group re-formed last year with the aim of keeping local riding
routes open and properly maintained, so that riders can continue to enjoy access to safe, offroad
riding. We believe it’s important to preserve and promote these routes for the next
generation of riders.
The group is affiliated to the British Horse Society and we are working in line with their Access Campaign,
which seeks to restore and extend equestrian rights of way and ensure that they are recorded before the
2026 cut-off date, when any unmarked routes will be lost forever.
We are currently working on a big project – the repair of Carr Lane in Milnrow. Carr Lane is an important
strategic link in the heart of our rights of way network but it has fallen into a dangerous state of disrepair.
Carr Lane provides off-road access to the Pennine Bridleway, Rochdale Way, Littleborough and the Rapes
Highway, a very old packhorse route from Milnrow to Marsden, It is a restricted by-way and multi-user
route, serving not only horse-riders but also mountain bikers, ramblers, walkers, runners, and anyone who
wishes to explore the great outdoors.
Carr Lane is part of our local heritage and would have been used as a main route in and out of Rochdale,
something like the M62 of today. People from Milnrow would have used the Lane back in the 1800s to get
up to the Rapes Highway and travel to Marsden where they could collect rushes for rushlights. The pith of
the rush would be dipped in animal fat and lit, in order to provide inexpensive lighting in the home.
Unfortunately, Carr Lane is currently treacherous to use, whether on foot, bike or horseback, and it is in
urgent need of repair to safeguard both local people andthe visitors who wish to use it.Due to the Lane's
aspect, slope and volume of natural water running down the hillside, the repair needs to be of a noneroding
type, and the fix needs to be sustainable, so as to preserve the route for future generations.
46
To advertise call 07976 289967 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

With current estimations of £150 a metre, such a fix is not going to be cheap, so the 700 metre-long lane
will require substantial funds to make it safe, and secure its future. Unsurprisingly, the Council have
insufficient funds to fix this right of way and so the bridleways group have taken on the mammoth task of
fundraising. We are running our own fundraising events, have just completed crowdfunding and we are in
the process of identifying sources of funding for which we can apply.
Repairing Carr Lane will not, of course, benefit just individual horse riders. We have two established riding
schools in the area - Broad Carr Farm Riding School, Milnrow and Dickey Steps Riding School, Rakewood,
who do an important job in teaching children, young people and adults, including those who are disabled,
to ride and promoting health & well-being. Furthermore, as the Lane is part of a larger route, it serves not
only riders in the local community but also those visiting or passing through from further afield, e.g. Oxhey
Western Trail Rides in Denshaw.
Repairing Carr Lane will also benefit the mountain bikers, ramblers, runners and walkers. We've already
made contact with some local rambling and walking groups who we think will benefit. The local Academy
school have used the Lane for Duke of Edinburgh activities and cross-country running and support our plans
and Evans Cycles organise mountain bike events in this area every year.
We would really like to hear from people in other user groups in our community, who would benefit from
the repair of Carr Lane, and who would therefore share and support our vision. So if there are any groups or
individuals who are walkers, ramblers, mountain bikers or local historians, interested in preserving our local
heritage, please get in touch. We believe that Carr Lane is a community asset and together we can make a
stronger application for funding and succeed in restoring this important right of way.
From the
archives
From the archives -
The Angel
Until the 1960’s, at the place where Manchester Road has its junction with The Esplanade and at the
entrance to Broadfield Park, stood a monument locally known as The Angel. Proud upon a four foot
Yorkshire stone base, it stood fifteen feet high against the trees of the park, resplendent in long flowing
robes with wings outstretched and with a left arm raised heavenwards. The statue was made from white
Sicilian marble and still remembered by many in the town as a once-prominent figure representing
something about Rochdale itself. Generations of people will recall The Angel as they walked past it from
the park or caught sight of it from passing buses and traffic. It stood as a silent but welcoming spirit of the
town.
The statue had been presented to Rochdalein 1899 by Ellen MacKinnon who then lived in Surrey,in dedication to and
memory of her mother Augusta. It was a commission for the sculptor Francis John Williamson of Esher, one of Queen
Victoria’s favourite artists.
A number of sites close to the town centre had been considered at which to erect The Angel including placing it by The
Butts, but this was felt to be inappropriate due to its proximity to the electric tram system. Eventually the corner of
Manchester Road was identified as suitable by the town council and this place was agreed as appropriate by Miss
MacKinnon herself.
Originally its function was a drinking place as in front of its base stood a large water trough for horses and a smaller,
lower one for dogs. In the late 19th century these were important refreshment points for the horses which were employed
in drawing hundreds of waggons and other vehicles into and out of the town. When the junction at the bottom of
Manchester Road was altered just before the Second World War, the drinking troughs were removed but The Angel
remained. The dogs, no doubt, had to go thirsty!
Given the vulnerability of The Angel’s material, there had been calls over time to protect it by re-locating it to a less
busy part of town, one suggestion being that it should be placed at the bottom of the main staircase in the Town Hall.
None of these suggestions were, in the event, taken up. Consequently, weather erosion and the vibration and pollution
effect of ever-increasing traffic into Rochdale caused the statue to deteriorate with reports through the 1950’s that the
hands of The Angel were crumbling, the face showing signs of erosion and the wings in danger of falling away. Eventually,
48 To advertise call 07976 289967 or 0797 443 4793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

in April 1961, it was removed by the Waterworks
Department and sent for examination in order to
estimate the costs of repair. Following this
assessment, the Town Hall committees felt that
the price asked to restore it would be too high and
it was removed either to a depot at Princess Street
or to the Entwistle Road Transport Depot where
it was believed to have been destroyed. There is
some irony if it was taken to the latter depot
near to Entwistle Road, as Augusta MacKinnon
(to whom the statue was dedicated) was the
sister, and Ellen the niece of John Entwistle who
had been not only Rochdale’s first Conservative
MP in 1835 and a member of the wealthy
landowner family of the Foxholes estate, but
the person after whom the road was named!
Letters to the Observer in 1961 reflected the
belief by many people in the town that the
removal of The Angel rather than its
restoration, was a blow to Rochdale and a
slight upon the Entwistle family. It was felt
to have been too important simply to have been
scrapped without plans to replace it in some way. And there have been calls as recently as 2010 to have another
Angel designed and erected to welcome people into the town, but as yet, these have fallen upon deaf political ears.
The Angel was reputed to have been, for many years, a regular meeting place for the people of Rochdale but more than
anything represented a gateway point into the town centre and a proud artistic and religious statement about Rochdale’s
welcoming nature. Perhaps now, more than ever, it is time to revive such symbols of hope and generosity and bring
back The Angel and its spirit to the town.
If you have any memories or comments about The Angel, I’d be delighted to hear from you and add them
to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject. Please contact Gary Heywood-Everett at
Milnrow Library Health Walks
have visit from Rochdale Living
Well Service
Throughout last month there has been great awareness targeting on personal health issues. The NHS obesity bill now exceeds
hip operation costs; and the NHS are offering free Health Checks to prevent risks of developing conditions of heart disease,
stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia.
Mr Danny Smith from Rochdale Living Well Service came to Milnrow Library Health Walk Group during Diabetes Week (12/19
June) to encourage people, especially men, to have regular Health Checks. Being overweight and physically inactive can lead
to type 2 diabetes.
Our Monday walks throughout the local
countryside are designed for all people
who wish to gain the health benefits of
regular exercise, and also offer the
opportunity for people to meet
socially. Walking with a group makes
you feel safe and more confident. Here
are some of the comments expressed by
our walkers.
One lady wrote
“Monday’s walking group has been a great way
to meet new friends especially as quite a few of us
live alone. Apart from enjoying the walks some of
the places we have walked we didn't know
existed. We have also enjoyed meals out together
which has been a way of getting to know
everyone. Monday mornings are something to
look forward to come rain or shine”
One couple wrote
"My wife and I joined the Milnrow Library
Walking Group approximately 12 months
ago. The benefits we have enjoyed since joining
have been really excellent. We have lived in Milnrow for 25 years and never realised how wonderful and varied the scenery
around the village was, literally within 15 minutes walking distance from the library. We now feel more confident with our
walking and enjoy doing longer distance walks, both on our own and with other walking groups. Not only do we feel healthier
but we have become good friends with many of the other members of the group, and we really enjoy getting together at the end
of the walk with tea, coffee and biscuits provided by the lovely Library Sta
One gentleman wrote
"After living in Milnrow for 33 years, I am walking
on paths I did not know existed.
Every Monday at 10am we meet at Milnrow
Library. If there are too many walkers for one
group, we can choose from the two that set off on
foot. It is surprising how quickly we are into the
countryside. A lot depends on the
weather. Amazingly Geoff turns up even if it is dire
- I don't! I have been made very welcome
whenever I do join in. There are an amazing
number of different walks in Milnrow. We return to
the library after about 1 1/2 hours and those who
wish can stay for a chat over a hot drink and biscuit
(for a tiny contribution). The rest is free. It's good to
chat with others in the group. It's good to walk - especially on a Monday morning in
Milnrow. I even gather walking not just makes you feel better, but you live longer!"
One lady wrote
"I have been walking with the Monday group at Milnrow for nearly 18 months now -
and here are some of the benefits I've found:-
- feeling of wellbeing from walking on the hills.
- helping to keep off those extra pounds which can pile on around the waist.
- I now feel 'trained' to climb hills as - on a recent holiday I left my group behind,
whilst I effortlessly climbed a volcano. Others were gasping for breath, but not me.
- great to walk and talk with a friendly group
- walking on Mondays energises me for the week ahead
- through the walking I am getting to know and love the surrounding countryside"
So, if you want to improve your physical and mental health and general wellbeing,
come along to our Walk and Talk Group. The walks are free, friendly, and led by
volunteer walk leaders. We meet at Milnrow Library every Monday morning from
9.30am, leaving out at 10am for optional 60 or 90 minute walks in our beautiful
surrounding countryside of Milnrow and Newhey.
PETRUS COMMUNITY STORE
The Community Store is a social enterprise, which was set up by the Petrus Community to
provide a service for local people and support the local community. It also helps to generate an income
for the charity, who provide housing and support for the homeless and
vulnerable. Working with the Bond Board, Women’s Housing Action Group
and other local agencies they provide essential furniture and household
items e.g. beds, settees, cutlery etc. to enable their clients to start to
rebuild their lives.
The store provides a resource for the community by offering second hand,
high quality goods such as furniture, white goods, household equipment
and clothing at very reasonable prices. This not only reduces landfill
waste, but also provides a place for people to purchase items, knowing
that they are helping others.
The Community Store is managed by Pam Barrett who said “it is an
amazing place to work our customers, donors and volunteers come from
all walks of life. No two days are the same. We try to make everyone
welcome and the shopping experience friendly. We are always in need of
good quality furniture and white goods (except fridges).”
Volunteers play an important part in the store from working on the till to
PAT testing to sorting out the clothes. Sonia has been a volunteer for 4
years she said ‘I love working here I have learnt new skills such as pricing
and working a till and my confidence has grown since I started. Everyone
is very friendly it’s just a great place to be.’
Anyone can get involved, either through donating or purchasing goods or
volunteering. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to get
involved. We are particularly in need of good quality furniture, beds and
sofas etc. they need to have a fire certificate and be in good condition. We
do offer a collection service but please ring before bringing any large items
