Dear Friends
What a month it has been. All I can say is I have never experienced a fire such as the one which ravaged
Knysna and, along with all of South Africa, my heart goes out to all those who have lost their homes, their
livelihoods and so much more. The huge storm in the Cape was also frightening. Is nature is telling us
something?
SITTING ON THE STOEP
When I was a student in the 1950s the Cape Town City
Orchestra was a major attraction and its concerts were
regularly broadcast on Thursday nights. Just after the
war it had a famous conductor Enrique Jourda which
added to its glamour. In the 50s my wife used to
babysit for the Principal Clarinetist, Wolfgang Simon
when his wife wanted to attend a concert and I, who
had recently come on the scene, joined the baby
sitting team one night. I remember being given quite a
critical ‘once over’ by Mrs Simon to see if she thought I
was good enough to babysit her child and, even more,
if I was good enough to go out with their family’s
favourite babysitter! Ruth Simon was a fairly direct and
outspoken lady so I never felt I could get away with
anything. It was almost like having to be on the sort of
special behaviour you try to be on when you meet your
prospective/possible/probable future parents-in-law
for the first time. I always felt I had to go through the
process twice!! Anyway they were very kind to Tricia
and then to me; we became close friends and kept in
touch for years afterwards until they both died. Their
‘baby’ graduated from Oxford and became a world
authority with geography as his interest.
South African pianist who plays across Europe, north
and south America, Africa and Asia) described as
possessing a ‘wonderful sound’ and a ‘polished and
refined technique’ and we will be specially watching
the lead clarinetist and thinking of concerts of over
sixty years ago.
These 60 members of the orchestra, all of whom have
devoted most of their lives from a young age to their
instruments, practising, practising, practising, will
be playing together in harmony and unison under
the baton of a famous conductor – it really becomes
a miracle. It’s one of the peaks of world civilization,
a glorious feast of human talent and intellect in a
universal language understood by us all – east or west,
north or south.
…….and its right here in Grahamstown on the
night of 7 July!
…….and I first heard them play in the opera ‘La
Boheme’ at the Alhambra Theatre in Cape Town
in 1947.
……. years later I remember an evening of three
concertos in the Cape Town City Hall with soloists
from the Art Vivo Trio when they played
So when I saw that the Cape Town Philharmonic
the Beethoven Violin Concerto
Orchestra is the highlight of the Festival in
the Grieg Piano Concerto
Grahamstown it brought back some poignant
memories. They will be playing the Franck symphony
the Brahms Cello Concerto
in D minor and the Beethoven piano concerto No. You know it’s quite something when you can go to a

played themselves out in music of imposing nature.”
Not quite the Ninth Symphony but just as compelling.
Sounds like just the sort of medicine we all need at this
moment in our topsy-turvy world.

Racnet Estate Management System
As you are aware, the DHA have implemented a new access control system which greatly improves
functionality and reduces costs. This new system will speed up visitor access and reduce the long gate
queues, providing ALL visitors are sent an access code in advance.
For the past 6 months, we have been validating the
system and with more than 50% of residents already
registered, we are confident of the system benefits and
advantages and now require all remaining residents to
be registered on the system.
To this end, the cut-off date of the old system is
31 July 2017, after which all visitors/contractors will
require an access code for entry as the Click On system
will be deactivated.
RACNET ALLOWS APP, WEB AND SMS
INTERACTION.
• When using the App, residents will receive
notification for both arrivals and departures,
allowing us all to enjoy a safer environment.
• The web version will also allow you to register your
pets allowing the DHA to repatriate lost ones back
to their homes.
• You will see icons for additional features and
functions coming down the line.

3. Login to the above web page and click on the
Dainfern logo to proceed
a. Select the My Access Codes icon on the
left, click the + button in the top righthand
corner
b. Select your stand and then complete the
visitor information form. If you want the
system to send the access code directly
to your visitor, remember to check
the box and enter the visitor mobile
number. If you don’t tick the Send to
visitor option, then the system will send

required.

LEGAL MATTERS
What is the difference between an Attorney and a Conveyancing Attorney?
First and foremost a Conveyancer is a specialist attorney who specialises in property transfers.
The word conveyancing is used to describe the
administrative and legal procedures necessary to
transfer ownership (and other rights) in immovable
property from one person to another.
An attorney without this qualification cannot facilitate
a property transfer in the Deeds Office.
In terms of the laws in South Africa immovable
property (vacant land, houses, flats, farms, buildings)
can be privately owned. Thousands of property
transactions take place in our country every day.
All dealings with ownership of land in South Africa
are recorded in a public office known as the ‘deeds
office’. The deeds office keeps all information about
the individual pieces of land in our country.
The computer records of the deeds office will show,
for example, who the owner of a particular property is,
when he or she acquired it and (if it was purchased)
how much was paid for it.
The Republic of South Africa's present land registration
system is based on the Land Survey Act (Land Survey
Act 8 of 1997) and the Deeds Registries Act (Act 47 of
1937) (the Act).
This system is dependent on the integrity and the
correct performance of the functions of conveyancers
and the staff of deeds registries.
Section 15A(I) of the Act provides that certain deeds
and documents must be prepared and signed by
a conveyancer who accepts responsibility for the
correctness and accuracy of certain facts set out in such
deeds or documents.
Conveyancers must also have proper knowledge of
the more than 390 pieces of legislation governing land
registration as well as the common law, conference
resolutions, dating back as far as 1938 and all relevant
Chief Registrar's Circulars.
THREE TYPES OF CONVEYANCING
ATTORNEYS:
Transferring Attorney
In a ‘typical’ sale, namely a transfer that results
from a sale that was brought about by the efforts
of an estate agent, there are three conveyancing
attorneys involved in the property buying/selling
process:
They transfer the property from the seller to the
buyer. They represent the seller and are appointed
by the seller as the Seller’s privilege.
Registering (or Bond) Attorneys
They register the bond over the property in favour
of the bank that is financing the purchase of the
property. They represent the buyer and the bank
granting the buyer's home loan.
Cancellation Attorneys
They cancel the seller's existing home loan on the
property. They represent the bank cancelling the
seller's home loan and are appointed by the bank.

The DHA, in conjunction with

Hosted a family day at the Pavilion on 16 June 2017.
A number of security related speakers addressed the
residents who attended the fun day on the following
issues:-
• Personal Security at home
• The Follow me Home service offered by FSS to
Dainfern Residents
• What to do in the event of a fire in your home and
how to treat burn victims.
The children who were at the event were enthralled by
a demonstration on self-defence by JKA Karate Dainfern
as well as by a puppet show that showed them in a fun
and playful way using a story of a mongoose not to talk
to strangers, not to play with electricity or fire and not
to play with plastic bags.
It was a fun and informative morning for all who
attended the family day and we would like to thank
Knickerbocker Ice Cream for launching their Dainfern
Ice Cream Tuesdays to the residents of Dainfern at this
family day.

YOUTH D.J. EVENING
On a chilly evening on Youth Day, we arranged a D.J.
Evening for the youth of Dainfern at the Pavilion. We
had a line up of 8 D.J.’s and two sets of professional
dancers from Cherry Dance and COMSADE.We had
bonfires to keep everyone warm as well as boerewors
rolls and hot chocolate for sale from the Tuck Shop in
the Pavilion.
Load Energy Drink had set up a Load display and had
their Load Energy Drink on sale. We had glow in the
dark items and the very popular Fidget Spinners on
sale as well!

GOLF CLUB NEWS
Ladies Club Championship 2017
The Annual Ladies Club Championship was played over the 18th and 19th of May 2017.
This is the biggest event on the ladies calendar and we knew that we will be treated to some great golf.
We had a total of 27 ladies that took part in our 2017 Club Championship and a few ladies that joined us for the
second day on Friday to be part of all the festivities.
The course was in excellent condition and we would like to thank Clinton Fouche and his great staff for a great golf
course and all the hard work.
To the Joyce Hughes and her team, Maureen Valsecchi, Heather Becker and Sandy Todd, we would like to thank you
for all the hard work, from the goodie bags and a great prize giving lunch.

Tournaments
Tennis players play tournament for many different
reasons, social, to improve, chase ranking points,
match fitness, to play different players or the love
to compete. I certainly love competing and playing
different players.
Tennis South Arica also cater for all ages, juniors from
under 10 to 18, open and seniors and in the juniors there
are different categories such as platinum, gold and silver.
Because we get older it doesn’t mean we are less
competitive and less driven to excel and reach our goals.
One never loses that competitive spirit and TSA makes
events available for everyone across South Africa.
The question often asked is, what is the correct age to
compete? And what if my child loses and never wants to
play again? Everyone is different and matures at different
stages and some players handle a loss better than others.
Coaches and parents know their students and players
and will guide and teach them how to handle all the
situations.
My opinion is that match toughness and to learn how to
play matches is very important, it is a big part of learning
the game and the earlier the better. Keep in mind that
the student must have the strokes, maturity, and game
to start competing. Throwing a youngster into the deep
end and your not sure if they can swim, then it is definitely
too early.
The other crossroad is that parents and coaches always
play the local tournaments and their view is that when
the youngsters get better and their ranking improves, and
only then will they venture out of town to compete. That
makes a lot of sense, however then they keep playing
all the same kids and get to know their games and start
feeling comfortable. Playing different players keeps them
on their toes, challenges their nerves and they learn to
compete against a broader spectrum.
Therefore traveling to tournaments is an expense and
more time consuming but certainly worth the while. So
clearly my students need to travel more and become even
more match tough with a wider range of competitors.
Have lots of fun competing and reaching your goals!

Human Race
Dainfern Running Club take their hats off to
the following competitors in the Comrades
Marathon which was held on Sunday, 4 June
2017:-
• Christine Walter in a time of 9:41:21
• Linda Smart in a time of 9:53:00
• Wayne Rosenberg – his first run – in a time
of 10:20:36;
• Lucretia Khumalo in a time of 11:59:59 who
was just, just in time to receive a bronze
medal for her accomplishment! We know
you had to dig deep Lucretia but this was an
awesome run – well done!
The Comrades is definitely “the ultimate human
race” as can be attested by these competitors!
The weekly time trial takes place on a Wednesday
evening starting at 17h45 sharp from the area
behind the kid’s play area at the Clubhouse. We
have distances of 5km, 3km and 1km which are
timed.
As from 12 July 2017 from 17h15 onwards,
Sportsman’s Warehouse will be at the start of the
time trial with various items for sale, including
reflective gear, which, during winter, is an
absolute necessity – especially for our younger
runners, as the time trial is run in the dark and
all other road users need to be able to see the
runners as they traverse the Estate.
We look forward to welcoming everyone –
runners, walkers, power walkers and children to
the weekly time trial.

Become a Lion,
it's the right thing to do!
DAINFERN LIONS FOOTBALL CLUB
Jooste Van Der Westhuizen passed away earlier this year. His son shown in the pic, Jordan is a long
standing member of the Dainfern Lions Football Club and like his Dad and Chairman of the club, Nic
Papas, is a die hard Liverpool FC Supporter.
When his Daddy passed away Jordan wrote a letter for
his Daddy to give to God and in the letter he asks God
to let Liverpool win their next game which "they in fact
did".
This Act by the young Lion went viral on social media
all over the world. It was then that the current manager,
Jurgen Klopp wrote to Jordan personally and the entire

Donosti Cup 2017 in Spain this July. He was chosen out
of 150 players after completing numerous trials. He has
also been selected to walk the South African teams out
at the opening ceremony holding our National Flag.

NATURE TRAILS

Poplar Marsh (from the 9th Fairway)
At the 9th T Box walk on the golf path track (towards the Clubhouse) at the small brick bridge a little way
along the fairway, you will see a sign Willowgrove to Poplar Marsh with an arrow pointing South.
Walk through the pretty Willowgrove, cross the road
and follow the cobbled brick path through a pretty
shaded area, meandering up and into Poplar Marsh,
where one cannot help noticing the beautiful bark
of the Poplars, which at different times of the day are
striking and dazzling. This is a good place for those
wanting to capture that unusual picture to enter

into the In Focus Photographic Competition, so do
remember your camera or phone.
Parakeet Rose-ringed love this area, so keep your eyes
and ears open when walking through the dappled
shade that will give you some relief from the hot sun on
this lovely walk up to Saw Grass or through the Glades.

BIRD OF THE MONTH

White-bellied Sunbird
Cinnyris talatala
In June and July many of the aloes in Dainfern are in full flower and this is the time that nectar-feeding
birds are in their element. One such bird is our most common sunbird species, the White-bellied Sunbird.
This is one of the easier to identify sunbirds with the
male showing a white belly and iridescent green
throat and back, a feature not evident in any of the
other local sunbird species. Because of the strong
sexual dimorphism shown with sunbird species – as
is evident in the photographs with this article - the
female is and more difficult to identify and is quite
drab compared to the male.
This is a species of light wooded areas and gardens
and parks. It has benefited a great deal from the
planting of trees and nectar producing plants in
suburban areas and is undoubtedly more common
in the greater Gauteng area than in historical times
when there were fewer trees and flowering plants.
It is mostly seen singly, or in pairs when breeding.
Sunbirds cannot exist only on nectar and insects
form an important part of the diet, with bees, ants,
wasps, spiders and even locusts being caught and
consumed or are gleaned from foliage. Nectar is
taken from flowers in the canopy of trees, or from
aloes and plants such as redhot pokers (kniphofia)
that flower at certain times of the year, although
this is mostly in autumn and early winter.
This is a monogamous species, pairing up with one
mate for most of its life. It lays from 1-3 white eggs in
a cleverly constructed and cryptic-looking hanging
nest, positioned in the tree canopy and protected
from predators by dense foliage. Spider web is used
to bind together the leaves and grass used to make
up the nest and incubation is done solely by the
female although both parents feed the chicks.
The White-bellied Sunbird is a fairly common species
that cannot be described as being threatened in any
manner in the region. It is a superb bird to see on
the estate as it dashes around in search of flowering
plants. As long as the banks of aloes and other
flowering plants on the estate that produce nectar
continue to be cultivated we should continue to see
this cheerful bird amongst us.

deterrent and few animals eat these crickets, although
the Kori Bustard and Bat Eared Foxes seem to like them.

Strange
behaviour
Recently in the Kruger National park when
everyone was looking for lions and leopards, I was
fascinated by this insect that looked like it had
come straight out of a horror movie.
Grasshopper spiked on thorn tree.
Frog spiked on barbed wire by Fiscal Shrike.
I had never seen an Armoured Ground Cricket this
colour before. Normally they are grey or light brown.
They certainly have quite an arsenal of anti predator
weapons.
Firstly they have extremely strong jaws and sharp teeth
that can draw blood on humans when bitten. If that
fails to repel a predator they release a yellow substance
that smells and tastes terrible.
I actually filmed one being attacked by a Red Tailed
Skink that grabbed it by a leg and immediately let go
Wandering around Dainfern we often come
across insects and other small animals being
“spiked” on thorns or on barbed fences . Many
years ago I was told that this was the work of the
“Butcher Bird” or “Fiscal Shrike”. It was known
as the “Shrikes Pantry” because the bird would
come back and eat it later.
While I still lived in Blairgowrie I had one of
these shrikes in my garden who used a large
aloe for this purpose. It would continually spike
small items of food i.e. beetles, pieces of cheese,
biltong, bacon, spiders and once a small wolf
snake on the thorns at the end of the aloe leaves.
NOT ONCE DID I SEE THE SHRIKE EAT ANY OF
THESE MORSELS
and I am convinced that it is merely a territorial
display warning other shrikes that, “This is my
territory, keep out and stay out!!”

What to do in your
garden in July
July, traditionally the month of pruning roses and the time of the year where we start revitalising our
lawns for the onset of warmer days and the promise of spring. With pruning top of mind it is a good idea
to look at large trees and shrubs in our gardens with the view of getting in professional tree fellers to shape
and remove dead and diseased branches.
FLOWERS
• Prune Roses from mid to end July, this will exclude
rambling and Old English Roses that are forming
buds now to flower in early spring.
• Plant flower seedlings like Alyssum, Cineraria,
Chrysanthemum, Delphinium, Primulas, Primula
Obconica, Phlox, Petunia and Viola.
• Feed your winter flowering annuals with Multifeed
Flowergro or Margaret Roberts Supercharger.
• Plant Lilium bulbs
• Prune Hydrangeas from mid to end July.
LAWNS
• In the Highveld continue to water Kikuyu lawn at
least twice a month.
VEGETABLES, HERBS & FRUIT
• Plant vegetable seedlings like Cabbage, Leeks,
Onions, Moss-Curled Parsley, Swiss chard and
Spinach.
• Water citrus trees.
GENERAL TASKS
• Water and fertilise plants, herbs and annuals in
outdoor containers regularly.
• Continue watering and fertilising spring flowering
shrubs regularly, at least once a week as they are
starting to form buds for flowering in early spring.
• Protect your frost sensitive plants.
• Re-pot indoor and outdoor container plants.
• Improve soil structure by digging in generous
amounts of compost and well-rotted manure.
• Continue mulching soil with compost, sawdust,
bark chips and fallen leaves – this will prevent
solid moisture loss and keep the roots warm
through the winter.
