Introduction to the second edition of 

the MSIF International Directory 

In October 1997 the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation produced the first draft 

report of its Survey of Member MS Societies. This was presented at the International 

Fundraising SkillShare in Leeuwenhost, Netherlands. The survey was the first attempt 

to identify key information about MSIF’s Member Societies and focused on contact 

details, the structure of each organisation, and their provision of services. 

The style and content of the 1997 questionnaire was influenced by the Member 

Society Survey conducted by the European MS Platform in 1995, which collected data 

from MSIF’s 21 European members. 

In September 1998, the Member Societies Fundraising and Communications 

Committees decided to bring the survey up to date and a slightly amended version of 

the 1997 questionnaire was produced and circulated. In March 1999 the questionnaire 

was further refined to provide a more detailed profile of each Society and in 2000 it 

was decided that a bound report should be produced that would include an update of 

all the information gathered over the years. 

Subsequently, in October 2000 a revised questionnaire was sent to all MSIF 

Members. In addition to sending the questionnaire to the 35 Full Member Societies 

and the 4 Associate Member Societies, a similar questionnaire was also sent to nonmember 

MS Societies and organisations in 36 countries around the world. By March 

2001 the questionnaire had been completed and returned by 30 member societies. 

The result was the production of the first edition of the MSIF International Directory, 

published in May 2001. 

The second edition of the MSIF International Directory includes information about three 

new Associate Members. The Directory will be updated on a regular basis and MSIF 

welcomes suggestions for data and facts to be included in the third edition that will be 

published within the next three years.

Foreword 

The MSIF International Directory 2002 is a comprehensive compilation of basic facts 

and figures about MSIF’s Member National Societies. 

The relevance of such a publication to the work of Member Societies’ CEOs and staff 

members should not be underestimated. The International Directory allows quick and 

easy access to information about MS worldwide in a user-friendly format and should 

facilitate communication between Member Societies. 

The MSIF International Directory 2002 is also a useful marketing and fundraising tool 

for both MSIF and its Member Societies. MS transcends cultural and linguistic 

boundaries and the International Directory will serve to promote the global pursuit of 

the eradication of MS and its effects on people worldwide whilst displaying each 

Member Society’s role. 

Similarly the International Directory will enable MSIF and its Member Societies to 

highlight a united front in advocacy and campaigning issues through adding strength in 

numbers. 

Furthermore the gathering of information on best practice from the different Member 

Societies is invaluable in developing new projects to offer support and services to 

people with MS or undertaking simple level research. In addition to highlighting the 

support and services each Member Society offers people with MS in its country and 

providing the name of the people involved in particular activities, the MSIF International 

Directory provides data on the numbers of people with MS known to each society. 

Each Member Society should be proud to be a part of such a global effort and the 

MSIF International Directory 2002 celebrates unity in the struggle to combat MS, 

generating a sense of belonging to a worldwide movement. 

The International Directory will not only allow people to develop pride in their society 

and its presentation in an international format but will also be a useful tool in 

developing communication, research, fundraising and advocacy.

national MS societies worldwide. We are committed to working together and with the 

international research community to eliminate MS and its devastating effects. We also 

speak out on a global level for those affected by MS.
