What is BUDDY, let me tell ya

it’s an initiative that helps young people, yeah,

people who love each other,

building castles out of love for one another.

IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

At the moment, there are almost 5000 children

in Slovakia who do not grow up in a family setting

but are instead raised in institutional care.

This form of care often lacks to provide them with

the one thing a child needs the most when

growing up… Close relationship with a mature

adult, who willingly spends time with them for free.

This often leads to the fact, that many of these

young people end up living on the margins of

society after leaving the care.

FINDING THE SOLUTION

Friends and family are part of essential

support system and initially help us build

our abilities to have healthy relationships;

also to work and/or live independently.

We focus on matching children in care with

adult volunteers who can support and

encourage the children in care in daily tasks

so that eventually they can find their own

place in the world.

When I first joined tvojBuddy project I just wanted to do something meaningful in my free time and be useful

in some way. Very simple idea… I would not have guessed back then how much would this experience give me

and transform me as a person…

I first met Rony on one of the Saturday group activities some 3 or 4 years ago. The theme of the camp was

Indians. All the younger kids were painting or making Indian inspired headbands and crossbows. Rony was a bit

older. He would just sit in the corner alone; he was very quiet. I would not recognise the sound of his voice even

after spending the whole day with him as he rarely said a word the whole day.

It might have been a month later when Rony came to me himself to ask for an advice regarding his bike. He was

12 back then, so bike was naturally the most important topic for him at that stage.

We started to chat about our hobbies, friends… Rony was a great chatting buddy; you could have a conversation

with him about almost anything.:-) We gradually became friends and started to plan our weekend activities,

trips, adventures and even summer jobs together.

In the beginning, Rony was more of a shy and quiet type. If you sent him to a shop he would prefer not to go just

to avoid conversation with the shop assistant. Even in the group, he would be the quiet one. You would not

see him trying to be the centre of attention… Despite all this he was very smart, good with electronics and

PCs. He was really curious about all things technical, music and cars.

My girlfriend and I started to spend more time with him, I introduced him to my other friends, we would chat

and go on trips together and Rony gradually became part of our group.

What was once a quiet and shy loner, is now an amazing almost grown-up guy with a great and broad overview,

who is able to have a meaningful conversation with anyone about almost anything. Rony is ambitious and

focussed. He has a clear idea of what he wants in life and is happy to sacrifice other things in order to achieve

his goals. He is currently saving up to do his driving license; he is very empathetic and responsible. He has a talent

for technical stuff and keen interest in music.

And who knows what else is out there for him? I am very proud of him and experience his successes, that he

sometimes take for granted, with joy and pride as if they were my own.

Meeting my Buddy Rony has enriched my life so much. I now really understand that Buddy offers so much

more than just a one-way volunteering activity. It is about building strong relationships and mutual

understanding. I believe that such bond is forever.

⇾ We revived our Facebook page and

increased our “likes” from 1200 in May

to our current 2300.

⇾ We have a new website, printed

new brochures and leaflets and keep

working on new ways that could help

us promote the main idea and

uniqueness of Buddy programme

to wider public.

⇾ None of the articles and

media coverages about Buddy

that appeared in media were

initiated by us or part of our PR

activities.

OUR PROGRAMME

We managed to successfully identify what

works and what does not based on our 10

years of experience. We realised we need

to focus on building relationships between

children from orphanages and mature

volunteers rather than organising various

workshops and trainings for children.

⇾ We also realised that it is often not so important

and relevant what activities volunteers do with

the children as long as they have a good bond, strong

and good relationship. Children then tend to

naturally do well and make good decisions. If they

do not have a relationship they are unable to judge

what is right and what is not.

OUR CHILDREN

All our kids who left care are in private housing

and almost all are currently in employment.

OUR TEAM

We

found great team of specialists who work

with children, led by Zuzana Zimova, whose

name resonates and is known by practically all

managers ager and staff of orphanages across the

whole republic.

⇾ We realised that it is this relationship that is a therapeutic tool in

itself; the thing children need the most. No other thing can help a child

in self-development and self realisation as much as having a great mature

adult role model. So we started to look for those great mature adult role

models. Great role model adults go to work, live independently and have

healthy relationships towards themselves as well as to others. We are very

blessed and lucky, that we have been contacted by many great volunteers

who want to commit and build long term relationships with their BUDDY

not just for few weeks but for life.

⇾ We managed to put in use all those 10 years of trying

what works as well. We still work with volunteers and we still

do workshops and training sessions for children.

However, instead of arranging a session on CV writing we came to

a conclusion that it is of a much better value for a child if

a volunteer who has good relationship with the child and whom

the child trusts, sits and writes the CV with him, walks him or her to

their first job interview and then celebrates and/or provides

support afterwards. No workshop or training can provide or

replace this.

OUR STRATEGY

We found a better way of managing our time and resources

so that we can grow and be more efficient. Our volunteers

come for trainings to us, not the other way round.

OUR FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

We managed to finance all our activities in 2016, without

any debts or unpaid dues being brought forward.

MARKETING

THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH

HOURS IN A DAY…

We did not manage to hold interviews

with all volunteer Buddy applicants who

contacted us. We did not expect such a

response rate. There are almost always

two people present at the interview and

the process lasts at least 1,5 hours and so

it is often quite time-consuming and

challenging for our small (and busy)

team.

Our blogs are read by 4500 to

26000 readers and are regularly

rated in the top ten most read

blogs on denník N.In the past

year, most of our marketing

activities were centred around

the recruitment of volunteers.

WE DID NOT SUCCEED IN…

HOLÍČ

The number of volunteers applying for

Buddy is much higher in Bratislava and

surrounding areas and so it is sometimes

challenging to find volunteers in other

areas. Unfortunately, we were unable to

find any volunteers in Holíč.

FINANCES

Our base of regular individual donors

has not grown as much as we would like

to. We are, however eager and look

forward to continuing in our fundraising

activities and endeavours in 2017.

MANAGEMENT

Our modern IT system collects all our important

data and keeps them in one place. It was a

custom-made system that includes a mobile app

that helps us identify and target what our

volunteers and children need and where and when

is our help and advice needed. This also means that

as an organisation we are systematically prepared

for growth to cater for needs of hundreds of

children and volunteers.

PARTNERSHIPS

Due to time and resources constraints

we were unable to build and work on

new partnerships with corporations.

Instead we focussed on finding the right

marketing and fundraising specialists

who are receiving great pro bono

support in this area by the founder of

Buddy Ladislav Kossár.
