Beatty Secondary welcomed
240 new students into the
Beatty family with a three-day
Orientation Programme.
The theme of Orientation 2017
was ‘Star Wars’. As “junior Jedi”,
the students took part in various
activities such as the Galaxy Quest
and CCA trials which helped them
to get to know their classmates,
teachers and new school better.
The Orientation culminated in
a campfire where the classes
competed with one another for the
title of Best Class. The classes also
showed off their creative abilities
by singing, dancing and cheering.
This was truly a rousing end to an
Lunar New Year Celebration
Beatty Secondary School
celebrated Lunar New Year
on 27 January. In line with the
school theme of ‘One School, One
Family’, the celebration started
with the reunion Lohei session
in class with form teachers. The
Lohei session was meaningful and
exciting as it helped to strengthen
class bonding.
The Lohei session was followed
by the Lunar New Year concert
in the hall, another highlight of
the celebrations for the day. The
concert was launched by our
Principal, Mr Ling, Vice Principals
and key school partners (members
from School Advisory Committee,
Alumni and Parent Support
Group).
The concert started on a festive
note with school leaders presenting
oranges to all staff members on
The traditional lion dance
stage. All oranges were sponsored
by school leaders as a token of
good luck and prosperity in the
year of the Rooster.
Concert items were put up by
students from Chinese Orchestra,
Wushu and Malay Dance. A group
of teachers and students also
presented a song item. During
the celebration, students also
learnt about the Lunar New Year
culture and traditions through the
informative video clip and exciting
quiz.
The highlight of the concert was
the finale performance by the
lion dance troupe. This item was
sponsored by Mdm Janet Yeong,
the President of Beatty Alumni.
It was indeed a wonderful and
memorable Lunar New Year
celebration for all Beattyians as a
big family.
Beatty Secondary School is privileged to have our alumni who
have excelled in the commercial and public sectors. Our alumni
also gives back actively to Beatty and can often be seen showing their
support at school events. Their support is also felt in other tangible ways,
for example, through the sponsorship of the Beatty Secondary School
ties for all incoming Secondary One students and the ex-Balestier Hill
Secondary School students who joined Beatty Secondary this year.
On 13 February, we had the Tie Presentation Ceremony where a
distinguished member of the Beatty Alumni, Mr Goh Joon Seng,
presented the sponsored ties to the students. Mr Goh is from the Class
of ‘58 and had an illustrious legal career as a Supreme Court Judge
from 1990 to 2000. Mr Goh is currently a member of the Council
of Presidential Advisors of Singapore and was recently awarded the
Meritorious Service Medal (Pingat Jasa Gemilang) at the 2016 National
Total Defence Day 2017
Key message of Total Defence
Total Defence (TD) involves every Singaporean playing a part, individually and collectively, to build a strong,
secure and cohesive nation. When we are strong, we are able to deal with any crisis.
Objective of Total Defence Commemoration
To ensure that every student knows and internalises that he or she has a role to play in the safety and security
of the nation.
It was the English and Humanities departments’ aim to provide our students with a series of meaningful
programmes to instil in our students the sense of importance with regards to Total Defence. We feel that the
comprehensive nature of the programmes implemented have helped us to achieve this aim.
International Friendship Week
The Math as well as the Art and
Technology (A&T) department
teachers organised various activities
to celebrate International Friendship
Week (3 - 6 April).
This year, the theme is ONE
ASEAN and our students learnt the
importance of cultivating strong
friendships with our international
friends. Our students went through
specially designed LiVE lessons and
lessons in Math, D&T, Art, FCE and
Music to learn more about ASEAN:
its geography, demographics and
diverse cultures. The morning
Beatty radio programme invited
Students apply Math to learn more about geographical facts
and demographics of ASEAN countries in Math lessons
international students from Thailand
and Myanmar to share with the
school their language and culture.
The assembly programme concluded
the International Friendship Week
with an enjoyable quiz and a
meaningful sharing by students who
went to Jakarta for the BACABAH
Tripartite Exchange in 2016.
The class of 1T1 would like to thank
all students and teachers for their
generous support at the ASEAN
photo booth. A total of $230 was
collected, and our 1T1 students
learnt to apply ICT skills and how to
run a photo booth. In October 2017,
our Sec 3T students will use the
money collected to buy stationery
for students in a local village
school in the outskirts of Ho Chi
Annual Sports Day 2017
The Annual Sports Day took place on the morning of 13 April at Toa Payoh Stadium. Beattyians took part
in the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay events, showing great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
Even though the day did not start well due to unfavourable weather, the rain did not dampen our spirits as we
waited patiently for better weather conditions. There was also great House spirit and a sense of unity shown
as both students and teachers were supporting the runners and cheering everyone on, as reflected in what our
Principal Mr Ling said, “This is indeed a true display of One School, One Family.”
Coordination is key at the relay
