This month we celebrated the 241st anniversary of this great nation’s
“celebrated” by having a BBQ at home, hanging out at the beach, or in other ways.
PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- New
American Funding, un prestamista hipotecario
nacional, se une a la Asociación Nacional
de Profesionales Hispanos de Bienes Raíces
(National Association of Hispanic Real Estate
compradores hispanos de vivienda, y New
American Funding.
La estrategia se centrará en tres iniciativas:
Fomentar la iniciativa empresarial hispana:
Para el año 2024, New American Funding
proveerá orientación directa a 500 pequeñas
empresas hispanas. Esta iniciativa abarcará
una Cumbre de Pequeñas Empresas Hispanas
que tendrá lugar anualmente en la sede
de New American Funding en California.
Los oradores y líderes empresariales que
participan en la conferencia ofrecerán
orientación, conocimiento y apoyo directo a
dueños de empresas hispanos.
Aumentar las tasas de adquisición de
vivienda de los hispanos
Para el año 2024, New American Funding se
compromete con prestar $25 mil millones en
nuevas hipotecas a compradores de vivienda
hispanos.
hispana.
presidenta y cofundadora de New American
Funding.
New American Funding to Lend
$25 Billion in New Mortgages
to Hispanic Borrowers
Mortgage Lender Aligns with NAHREP to
Support Hispanic Wealth Project
Tenemos aseguranza en nuestra área
para personas que no tenemos Seguro
Social, ni licencia de conducir,
Hay aseguranzas que nos pueden
ayudar, con nuestros gastos en caso
de una Emergencia, por accidente o
enfermedad. Les llamamos seguros
complementarios.
¿Qué pasa con el reemplazo de la
pérdida de ingresos, el pago del alquiler,
las compras de víveres e incluso los
gastos de viáticos para que sus seres
queridos vayan a visitarlo al centro de
recuperación?
Es inevitable sufrir accidentes y
enfermarse.
accidente, enfermedad y vida. Nuestras
pólizas son fáciles de comprender, de
modo que pueda tomar las decisiones
correctas sobre su cobertura.
Son muchas cosas de las que
preocuparse. El seguro complementario
simplemente lo ayuda a descansar un
poco más tranquilo.
Los productos de seguro
complementario están diseñados para
ayudar a cubrir todas esas necesidades
arribas mencionadas.
complementario.
Usted ha trabajado mucho para alcanzar
sus sueños: un auto, una casa, pasar
tiempo con la gente que ama. Pero sus
sueños pueden estar en riesgo si usted
protagoniza un accidente, lo que pondría
en peligro sus activos y su futuro.
Nunca está comprometido a comprar
nada, por solicitar información, usted
tiene la última palabra.
¿Que Pasa Tally?
aquí contigo para hacerte esta
entrevista.
hispana. Pero con el tiempo poco a
poco me fui adaptando.
Are we there yet?
By Bohemian Babushka
HolaHolaHola
Beautifuls!!
Summer is upon
us, and if there’s a question that fits the
season, it’s “Are we there yet??” Those
of us with children have surely heard
this many a time. A question of longing
thrown at parents by little ones tired of
their current surroundings. Hoping to
change their future they feel dragged
along and want something different,
something more. Now think about this
Beautifuls, isn’t that a perfect analogy
for us this month, the month of this
country’s independence?
1776. The American colonists have
been living a journey without much
say in it. For the most part they’ve been
dragged along with empty pledges
of better surroundings and they are
tired of it. Paying taxes without much
representation they are told to be
silent. They’ve had enough and fight
for their freedom, and from this fight a
new nation was born.
2017 and now more than ever
Americans are asking “Are we there
yet?” Have we found the promises this
lands forefathers set forth? Do we dare
voice our opinions and fight for our
beliefs? Are we just going along on the
ride or are we active participants?
So, is BB suggesting that this country’s
early colonists were children or that
in our midsts are revolutionaries? JU
SO FONII!! By now you should know
Babushka with her love of twofers,
the USA and possibilities. In all times
there are lessons and opportunities.
Take advantage of roadtrips to learn
and re enact history; take advantage
of current events to make history.
Be an active part of this country’s
legacy. Always be ready to ask, “Are we
there yet?”
High School. Osman fue uno de los
mejores jugadores en su escuela,
por lo cual le fueron ofrecidas becas
para estudiar y defender los colores
para Universidades como FIU, Tulane,
Georgia State, Bethune-Cookman,
y FAMU entre otras. Osman escogió
FAMU en Tallahassee como su hogar
para sus estudios Universitarios. A
finales de junio en el 2014 Osman
Aguilera comienza en FAMU sus
estudios en Ingeniería Civil y con ello
comienza también su aventura en el
desarrollo como jugador de futbol
americano.
profesores.
americana y bien poca comida
Pablo: ¿Tu familia viene a verte
jugar a Tallahassee?
a Orlando a Tampa y claro a Miami,
ellos están ahí apoyándome. Algunas
veces les digo que no vengan porque
manejar tanto puede producir estrés,
pero ellos todavía viajan. Desde mis
días de PPO (Liga adolescente) a North
Miami Beach High School a ahorita a
FAMU, nunca faltaron un partido en
casa.
solo quiero hacerlos sentir orgullosos,
es lo mínimo que puedo hacer.
Pablo: ¿Que te gusta cocinar o
comer?
Osman: De verdad yo cocino muy
poco en casa. Paso muy ocupado con
clases o futbol americano. Siempre
me toca comprar comida rápida, que
la verdad yo me canso de comer,
pero es parte del sacrificio. Entonces
carne, mantequilla, y frijoles fritos
adentro de una tortilla de harina. Otro
plato favorito mío seria pupusas de
chicharrón que son tortillas de maíz
relleno con chicharrones y queso.
Estas son dos de mis favoritas comidas
hondureñas, pero hay muchas más
opciones como arepas, parrilladas,
paella, tacos, fajitas, pastelitos, tamales
(con mucha carne jaja) y muchas otras
variedades de comida latina.
¿Que Pasa Tally?
Pablo: ¿Que esperas en lo
personal y en lo colectivo de este
último año como jugador de FAMU?
Osman: Personalmente primero
quiero llegar al equipo “Todo
Conferencia”. Este logro mío no lo
podido hacer por lesiones en los años
anteriores. Este año me he enfocado
en hacer mi cuerpo más resistente y
fuerte contra lesión. También quiero
tener el título de no dejar ningún
sack al quarterback. Colectivo, la
primera meta es ganar la conferencia.
Para hacer eso necesitamos ganar
un mínimo de 7-8 juegos en nuestra
conferencia.
conferencia. Cuando un equipo se
necesita alinear enfrente de nosotros,
quiero que nos teman. Siempre voy a
Entrenamos tanto
juntos que nos hacemos una gran
familia.
Pablo: ¿Quisieras ver más gente
latina viniendo al estadio a verte
jugar y así también apoyar a FAMU?
Osman: Como cualquier atleta, los
fanáticos gritando y animándonos, es
lo que nos alimenta durante el partido.
Pero también tengo una conexión
fuerte con mi gente hispana. Viviendo
y jugando en Miami, siempre había
un pequeño grupo de gente hispana
que me admiraba por ser uno de
los únicos jugadores hispanos. En el
juego de futbol americano no se ve
muchos hispanos jugando, entonces
creo cuando ellos me miraban a mi
jugar, yo siento que no solo estaba
representando a mi equipo, pero
también todos los hispanos que
mucha gente discrimina. Muchos
piensan que los hispanos son esta
gente chiquita con piel oscura, pero yo
cambie ese estereotipo al menos aquí
en FAMU. Por eso si me encantaría el
apoyo de toda la comunidad hispana
de Tallahassee en nuestros juegos de
FAMU y créanme que los representaré
con mucho orgullo.
Pablo: ¿Que consejo le podrías
dar a futuros estudiantes latinos
que puedan estar pensando la
posibilidad de venir a estudiar a
FAMU?
Osman: Para todos mis futuros
estudiantes universitarios hispanos,
no tengas miedo de aplicar a FAMU.
Yo sé que es un poco diferente,
pero existen un montón de
oportunidades y ventajas como
cualquier otra universidad. Yo
mismo soy un producto de las
ventajas de estudiar en FAMU y
que orgullosamente represento.
Mi profesor de la clase de diseño
de concreto, me consiguió una
pasantía pagada con NOVA
Engineering & Environment.
Trabajo con ellos bajo la rama
de pruebas de materiales de
construcción. ¡Yo solo soy un
pequeño producto de esta
universidad, cuando de verdad
existe miles más, y Uds. pueden
ser el próximo!
Pablo: Bueno Osman este sábado
26 de agosto esperamos seamos
más latinos apoyándote en tu juego
inaugural de la temporada 2017 en
FAMU. Esperamos que lectores de
Conexión estén allá para apoyarte y
estaremos atentos a las jugadas del
número 63 que vistes con mucho
orgullo. Así que dile a tus padres que
nos busquen que estaremos con ellos
apoyándote a ti y a FAMU. Un abrazo
hermano, Dios te bendiga y éxito, aquí
estaremos para apoyarte.
Todos queremos
ver que nuestros
hijos/as tengan
éxito en todo lo que hagan. Por eso,
necesitamos hacer decisiones que
tal vez no dejen a nuestros hijos
contentos.
escolar!
Por Dra. Maria Pouncey
este caso, empiezan con 6 meses de
retraso. Maestras inmediatamente
pueden identificar a los niños que no
han participado en alguna forma de
educación durante el verano. ¡No se
preocupe, aun no es muy tarde para
ayudarle a sus hijos!
Si tiene acceso al internet, sus hijos
pueden estudiar en línea. Programas
como pbs.org son buenos y tienen
programas como Súper Why que
tiene material en español. También
hay videos en YouTube que pueden
ver los pequeños como Daniel Tiger.
Una biblioteca en
línea que pueden
usar y es gratis es:
en.childrenslibrary.org
¡Tomen la
oportunidad de
aprender una nueva
palabra diaria-puede
ser en la lengua
nativa o en Inglesdigan
la palabra y
luego úsela en una
frase! Dejen que sus
niños también hagan
una frase usándola.
Imagínense cuantas palabras pueden
aprender sus hijos en un año. Si se
dirigen al sitio web www.dictionary.
com, podrán llenar un perfil y reciben
la palabra del día. Si no hablan inglés,
no importa-usen esta oportunidad de
una palabra diaria para aprender junto
con sus hijos porque ser “bilingüe vale
por dos”.
Celestial Connection
Seven Contrasts between
Unity and Oneness
By Joseph Mattera
I have been involved in numerous local,
city and national initiatives related to the
body of Christ. Often, our mantra circles
around the term “we need unity in the
body of Christ”. While that is a good start,
it should not be the end game for the
church. In John 17:20-23 Jesus’s prayer
for the church is that we would be one.
The kind of oneness He was speaking
about was akin to the ontological
oneness Jesus and the Father had
with one another. The Old Testament
counterpart to this passage is found
in Deuteronomy 6:4 where it says “the
LORD our God, the LORD, is One”. This
was not mere unity but a oneness
in purpose, essence, mind, heart
and passion, which exceeds mere
organizational and institutional unity. A
lack of oneness in the body of Christ is
the reason why we can have hundreds
of national prayer rallies without
experiencing the results we seek.
In the context of this article, unity
merely refers to coming together for
an event. In it, believers assemble in
the same geographic location around
a common cause. This can be a weekly
occurrence as on a Sunday morning or it
can be a regular pastor’s or marketplace
gathering or city-wide event. The
challenge with this is people are only
coming together because of a similar
interest in a preacher, or worship team
or cause, but they have never taken the
time to gel together (in addition to the
event), so that they are of one mind and
one heart. In contrast, the early church
had great power because they took the
time to pray together, dialogue, and
come to a oneness of heart and soul.
This all started after the resurrection
when they came together in unity for
ten days of prayer, comparing scripture
and choosing another apostolic leader
(Acts 1:12-26).
This process of unity brought them to a
place where God deemed them ready
for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on
the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). The
result of this was that the church not
only came together (unity) but they
had all things in common according to
Acts 2:44 (oneness), which resulted in
the Lord daily adding believers to the
church.
Unity was important because it was
the catalyst that was the bridge for the
church to go into oneness. Unity is the
means to the end but all events should
have sufficient follow-through that give
opportunity for oneness to develop.
Acts 4:32 says that all the believers
were of one heart and soul, then great
power and grace was manifest upon
them all. Mere unity is only a temporary
connection based on a common
interest; oneness transcends one event
because the common interest is “one
another” for the glory of God. This is
exactly what Paul the apostle meant
when he implored the Corinthian
church to be united in the same heart
and judgment (1 Corinthians 1:10).
Based on my observation, very few
people in any church, ministry, and
organization are really “one”. This is why
many entities are in survival mode. There
has to be a place where believers can be
honest, transparent, committed to one
another’s success and have ownership
of both the process and the product.
When this happens the synergistic
power of God will be manifest.
The following are seven contrasts
between unity and oneness:
1. Unity is the process. Oneness is the
product.
2. Unity depends upon an event.
Oneness transcends an event and knits
people together.
3. In unity people assemble for a
common interest. In oneness people
are integrated for kingdom purpose.
4. Unity is the means. Oneness is the
end.
5. Unity is how we should start.
Oneness is how we should finish.
6. Unity is built upon encouragement.
Oneness is built upon purpose.
7. Unity releases temporary
momentum. Oneness creates synergy
that maximizes purpose.
In closing, if the body of Christ
continues to put all their money
and effort in events without giving
opportunity for oneness to develop
among the primary leaders of these
events, we will continue to experience
the same dismal results.
Life Lessons from
John Wooden
One of the most revered coaches
in the history of sports is John
Wooden, nicknamed “The Wizard of
Westwood,” who won 10 NCAA national
championships in his 12-year career
as head coach at the University of
California Los Angeles.
Wooden, who passed away in June
2010, left behind a legacy as one of the
most successful basketball coaches in
the history of the sport, but he also left
behind a blueprint on how to become
the best and most successful person
one can be.
Today, athletes, business leaders,
employees and countless others follow
these life lessons from Coach Wooden
in their own lives. Below are five quotes
from this great basketball icon that
ring as true in today’s world as they did
when he first spoke them.
“Perform at your best when your best is
required. Your best is required each day.”
As one of the top blocks on Coach
Wooden’s “Pyramid of Success,”
competitive greatness does not mean
beating everyone else, but doing your
absolute best every day. No matter how
small the job, excellence is earned by
doing the most thorough work each
day, every day. The best work is done by
those who practice their skills, release
excuses and do important things, even
when the odds seem daunting.
“It’s the little details that are vital. Little
things make big things happen.”
Even the most menial tasks at a job
serve a purpose, and those little things
add up to create big results. Nothing
a person does should be considered
boring or insignificant. Strategic
planning and execution of major
projects also includes the little details
that can make or break a triumph.
Leaders can learn to appreciate their
employees from the ground up by
keeping this quote from Wooden in
mind. The man who cleans the offices
at night is as big a part of a company’s
success as the top salesperson.
“You can’t let praise or criticism get to
you. It’s a weakness to get caught up in
either one.”
People inevitably try to downplay
someone else’s success or belittle
another person. Friends, families,
competitors and enemies are
all guilty of this at one point or
another. Wooden’s advice is to stop
focusing on criticisms and focus on
helpful critique. If a complaint is valid,
that complaint can become a learning
opportunity and a chance to improve.
On the flip side, chasing flattery can
be almost as debilitating as giving
into criticism. Many people become
dependent on praise, chasing the ego
rub instead of true greatness.
“Don’t let making a living deprive you
of making a life.”
Too many people trade daily enjoyment
for achievement, but the key to true
success is having both. Also called
“work/life balance,” most people
find happiness when they achieve
something important and enjoy other
aspects of life. Working is a way to earn
a wage, but successful people also find
delight while accomplishing goals and
victories through their job.
“If I am through learning, I am through.”
In life, education is never finished.
Most successful business owners,
entrepreneurs, teachers or employees
are constantly on the search for
knowledge and ways to improve.
Life always offers up opportunities to
learn something new, whether it’s a
new skill set, another language, a new
hobby or a new perspective on life.
Not expanding a base of knowledge
or experience leads to stagnation
and boredom. Continuous learning
is powerful, so take life’s lessons from
Coach Wooden to begin building your
legacy.
Olas de Amor
By Cynthia M. Portalatín aka CynthiaRose
I miss my love like I once missed mi
playa, mis caracoles.
But the tears are no longer those of
a child. They are now the ache of a
woman’s heart.
I miss my love, like I missed playing
in the arena, quemandome con el
sol.
The gentle rocking of the waves at
night is no longer what my body
needs to sleep.
Now, it is the waves felt in my love’s
arms that I miss. Mis olas de amor.
The anger I felt toward the palm
trees of the north, which so
betrayed those of my beloved isla
is translated, transformed from one
love to another, more human to the
touch.
And the sight of happy lovers
together deepens the wound I
carry by choice. Because I cannot
let go of this ache.
I cannot abandon the pain.
It will keep the memory of my love
alive, until I once more can relive
my dream.
Or until las olas cubran mi alma.
Consejos básicos para cocinar a
la parrilla: Evite las enfermedades
transmitidas por alimentos.
SUDOKU
The object is to fill all empty squares so that
the numbers in each area is equal to the clue
aire libre. Pero comer al aire libre en
un clima cálido presenta un reto de
inocuidad alimentaria. Las bacterias en
los alimentos se multiplican más rápido
a temperaturas entre 40°F a 140°F (4.4
a 60°C), de manera que el calor del
verano hace que sea especialmente
importante tomar medidas básicas de
seguridad para los alimentos.
“Afortunadamente, hay muchas
medidas que pueden tomar los
consumidores para evitar que su familia
y sus amigos se enfermen”, dice la
doctora Marjorie Davidson, Ph.D., jefe
del equipo educativo del Centro para la
Seguridad de los Alimentos y Nutrición
Aplicada de la FDA.
Vea este video sobre cómo mantener
sus alimentos al aire libre seguros:
youtube/LIQExGRLfkY
Lávese las manos.
Parece elemental, pero no todos lo
hacen.
separado. No vuelva a utilizar la salsa
que se mezcló con la carne cruda.
Cocine bien los alimentos.
Para matar cualquier bacteria dañina
que pueda estar presente, utilice
un termómetro de cocina. Las
hamburguesas se deben cocinar a
160°F (60°C). Si no dispone de un
termómetro, asegúrese de que las
hamburguesas estén bien doradas
completamente, no rosadas. El pollo se
debe cocinar cuando menos a 165°F
A popular storyline in science fiction,
the concept of technological singularity
states, in a nutshell, is that there will
eventually come a point in time when
society will become so technologically
advanced that machines will no longer
need humans to “survive.
Luckily, we’re not quite there yet.
However, it is true the pace of
technology advancement is moving
quickly, which means big changes—
both positive and negative—for the
way we live and interact with the world
around us.
In business, the ability to stay ahead
of the curve and respond to changing
technological and social trends is a
key differentiator. The difficult task of
positioning yourself to stay competitive
requires skills that will become even
more in demand in the not too distant
future.
Global Communication skills
With the ongoing evolution of
communication technologies, the world
is only becoming more connected—
and it’s a trend that isn’t slowing down
anytime soon. As the barriers to doing
business on a global scale continue to
come down, the ability to communicate
with people from around the world
and from all walks of life will be more
important than ever.
De la A a la Z
A to Z
Must-Have Skills the Future
Workplace Will Demand
Remote work discipline
The advancement of technology
isn’t just changing the way we
communicate; it’s redefining the way
we work. Today, it’s easier than ever to
work remotely. The traditional model
of going to an office every day from
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. is changing as many
workers now have the freedom to
work from anywhere they can connect
to the internet. Of course, with this
freedom comes great responsibility.
The discipline to stay organized and on
task away from the structure of an office
setting will be an increasingly important
soft skill.
Interdisciplinary expertise
Knowledge is already at our fingertips,
and will only become more attainable in
the future. To stay competitive, workers
will need to be masters of multiple
disciplines within their organizations.
It’s not going to be enough to just
know your job, at least some working
knowledge of other roles will be
necessary. With the growing recruitment
war, those who develop a broader range
of skills will be in a better position to
help fill the gaps in the workforce that
are becoming more difficult to fill.
Interpersonal communication skills
With all the promise social media brings,
one of the major pitfalls can be seen in
restaurants, sporting events, concerts,
and even schools— everyone is staring
at their phones instead of interacting
with each other face to face. What
effect this will have on interpersonal
relationships and social skills is yet to be
seen, but being able to connect with
other people in real life may become
one of the most important skills that
job seekers can bring to a potential
employer.
The classics will still reign supreme
Soft skills in many ways transcend
advances in technology or changing
work environments. In a 2016 survey,
Express Employment Professionals
asked business leaders what they
believe the most important soft skills a
job applicant should have. The results
revealed that although the workplace
is constantly evolving, some skills will
always be in high-demand, including:
Dependability/Reliability – 72%
Motivation – 48%
Verbal communication – 44%
Teamwork – 39%
Commitment – 39%
No matter how the workplace may
change in the future, people will always
be the heart and soul of the business
world. Some of the most important
qualities of great employees can’t be
programed into a machine or easily
expressed via a virtual meeting space.
Investing in great people is the single
best strategy for any business to
prepare for the future.
El herpes zóster es
una enfermedad
caracterizada
por una erupción cutánea dolorosa,
ampollando que afecta a un lado del
cuerpo, típicamente la cara o el torso.
Hay aproximadamente 1 millón de
casos estimados por año en los Estados
Unidos.
ampolladora activa. Por lo tanto, los
individuos susceptibles deben evitar
el contacto con personas que tienen
herpes zóster activo, especialmente
mujeres embarazadas que nunca
han tenido varicela y personas
inmunocomprometidas. No puede
transmitirse tosiendo o estornudando,
contagiosa.
El herpes zoster generalmente
comienza con ardor, hormigueo,
picor, o irritación en la región donde
la erupción se desarrollará en última
instancia. A veces, este dolor puede ser
grave y las personas pueden quejarse
de piel extremadamente sensible. Este
malestar típicamente ocurre unos días
antes de que se desarrolle la erupción.
En raras ocasiones, la erupción cutánea
característica no aparecerá (una
condición llamada zoster sine herpete).
A menudo, las personas también
pueden experimentar otros síntomas
asociados como dolor de cabeza, fiebre
y escalofríos, malestar general, náuseas,
dolores corporales e inflamación de los
ganglios linfáticos.
Unos pocos días después de que
comience la molestia de la piel (o
rara vez, varias semanas después),
aparecerá la erupción característica de
las culebrillas. Comienza típicamente
como racimos de pequeños remiendos
rojos que eventualmente se convierten
en pequeñas ampollas. Estas ampollas
llenas de líquido finalmente se abren
y las pequeñas llagas empiezan
a secarse lentamente. Las costras
suelen caerse después de varias
semanas, y la erupción de culebrilla
típicamente desaparece después de
aproximadamente cuatro semanas.
La localización de la erupción de la
culebrilla puede variar. Aunque las
culebrillas pueden aparecer casi en
cualquier parte del cuerpo, afecta
más comúnmente al torso y la cara
(incluyendo los ojos, los oídos y la
boca).
SHINGLES
By Marcos Otero, Gulf Coast Immediate Care Center, Fort Walton Beach
Shingles is a disease characterized
by a painful, blistering skin rash that
affects one side of the body, typically
the face or torso. This condition may
also be referred to as herpes zoster, or
simply zoster. There are approximately 1
million estimated cases per year in the
U.S. Shingles is more common in older
individuals and in those with weakened
immune systems.
The characteristic rash of shingles
typically appears after an initial period
of burning, tingling, itching, or stinging
in the affected area. After a few days,
the rash then appears in a stripe or
band-like pattern along a nerve path,
affecting only one side of the body
without crossing the midline (to the
other side). The rash erupts as clusters
of small red patches that develop into
blisters, which may appear similar to
chickenpox.
Shingles is caused by the same virus
that causes chickenpox (varicella).
Only those who have previously had
chickenpox and those who have
received the varicella vaccine can
develop shingles later in life. After the
episode of chickenpox has resolved,
the virus remains in a dormant state
in the nervous system in certain nerve
cells of the body located in the spine.
While in this inactive state, you will
not experience any symptoms from
the varicella zoster virus. However, in
certain individuals and for reasons that
are not completely clear, the varicella
zoster virus may reactivate years later
and travel along nerve paths to cause
shingles.
Though similar in name, herpes zoster is
not the same disease as herpes simplex
(which is caused by the herpes simplex
virus causing cold sores, fever blisters, or
genital herpes)
Shingles can only occur in individuals
who have previously been exposed to
the varicella zoster virus. Risk factors for
the development of shingles include
the following:
continued next page
14 | www.conexionflorida.com
• Increasing age: Though shingles can
rarely occur in children, it is much more
common in older adults, increasing
with age.
• Weakened immune system:
Individuals with impaired immune
systems have a higher probability of
developing shingles.
The virus that causes shingles, the
varicella zoster virus, can be transmitted
from person to person by direct contact
with the fluid from the active blistering
rash. Therefore, susceptible individuals
should avoid contact with people
who have active shingles, especially
pregnant women who have never had
chickenpox and immunocompromised
individuals. It cannot be transmitted
by coughing or sneezing, and it is not
contagious before the blisters appear.
Once the shingles rash has dried and
developed crusting, it is not considered
to be contagious.
Shingles usually starts with burning,
tingling, itching, or stinging in the
region where the rash will ultimately
develop. Sometimes, this pain can be
severe and individuals may complain of
extremely sensitive skin. This discomfort
typically occurs a few days before the
rash develops. In rare instances, the
characteristic shingles rash will not
appear (a condition called zoster sine
herpete). Often, individuals may also
experience other associated symptoms
such as headache, fever and chills,
malaise, nausea, body aches, and
swollen lymph glands.
A few days after the skin discomfort
begins (or rarely, several weeks
afterward), the characteristic rash of
shingles will appear. It typically begins
as clusters of small red patches that
eventually develop into small blisters.
These fluid-filled blisters eventually
break open, and the small sores begin
to slowly dry and scab over. The crusts
usually fall off after several weeks, and
the shingles rash typically clears up
after approximately four weeks.
The location of the shingles rash can
vary. Though shingles can appear
almost anywhere on the body, it
most commonly affects the torso
and the face (including the eyes, ears,
and mouth). It is often present in the
area of the ribcage or the waist. This
characteristic rash is in a stripe or bandlike
pattern that affects only one side
of the body (the right or the left), and it
usually does not cross over the midline.
What are medical treatments for
shingles?
The treatment for shingles is aimed at
diminishing the effects of the virus, as
well as pain management. There are
several medications that can be used,
and your doctor will discuss the best
treatment options for your particular
situation.
The duration of an acute shingles
outbreak may vary, but typically it will
last anywhere between two to four
weeks. In some individuals, it may last
longer.
Barbecue Basics: Tips to Prevent
Foodborne Illness
SILVER SPRING, Md., 30 de junio de
2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/
It’s the season for picnics, cookouts,
and other outdoor parties. But eating
outdoors in warm weather presents
a food safety challenge. Bacteria in
food multiply faster at temperatures
between 40°F and 140°F, so summer
heat makes the basics of food safety
especially important.
“Fortunately, there are a lot of steps
consumers can take to keep family and
friends from becoming ill,” says Marjorie
Davidson, Ph.D., education team leader
in FDA’s Center for Food Safety and
Applied Nutrition.
Wash hands.
It seems basic, but not everyone does
it. Wash hands well and often, with
soap and water for at least 20 seconds,
especially after using the bathroom and
before cooking or eating. If you’re in
an outdoor setting with no bathroom,
use a water jug, some soap, and
paper towels. Consider carrying moist
disposable towelettes for cleaning your
hands.
Keep raw food separate from cooked
food.
Don’t use a plate that previously held
raw meat, poultry, or seafood for
anything else unless the plate has first
been washed in hot, soapy water. Keep
utensils and surfaces clean.
Marinate food in the refrigerator, not
out on the counter.
And if you want to use some of the
marinade as a sauce on the cooked
food, reserve a separate portion. Don’t
reuse marinade that contained raw
meat.
Cook food thoroughly.
To kill any harmful bacteria that may
be present, use a food thermometer.
Hamburgers should be cooked to 160°F.
If a thermometer is not available, make
sure hamburgers are brown all the way
through, not pink. Chicken should be
cooked to at least 165°F. If you partially
cook food in the microwave, oven or
stove to reduce grilling time, do so
www.conexionflorida.com
immediately before the food goes on
the hot grill.
Refrigerate and freeze food
promptly.
It can be hard to remember while a
party is going on, but food should not
be left out of the cooler or off the grill
for more than two hours. Never leave
food out for more than one hour when
the temperature is above 90°F.
Keep hot food hot.
Hot food should be kept at or above
140°F. Hot food should be wrapped
well and placed in an insulated
container. If bringing hot take-out food
such as fried chicken or barbecue to an
outdoor party, eat it within two hours
of purchase. In addition to bringing
a grill and fuel for cooking to an
outdoor location, remember to pack a
food thermometer to check that your
meat and poultry reach a safe internal
temperature. When re-heating food at
the outing, be sure it reaches 165°F.
Keep cold food cold.
Cold food should be held at or below
40°F. Foods like chicken salad and
desserts that are in individual serving
dishes can be placed directly on ice
or in a shallow container set in a deep
pan filled with ice. Drain off water as ice
melts and replace ice frequently.
ayuda a alimentar, vestir y atender
a más de 150 niños que viven en la
vecindad de niños del CIC este año. El
financiamiento para atender a nuestros
niños es nuestra necesidad más crítica
pero nuestro reto más difícil. ¡Esta
donación será de gran ayuda para que
nuestros niños tengan un mejor hogar
y vida!”
CIC es una fundación sin ánimo
de lucro y exenta de impuestos
Supongo que la gran ventaja de
ser libres es que podemos hacerlo
sin temor a represalias de cualquier
persona, especialmente de nuestro
gobierno.
Connecticut.
Nos enteramos de Yerry Han, un
jefe de la nación Oneida - una de
las pocas tribus nativas que se
aliaron con los patriotas durante la
revolución americana. Yerry luchó
contra los casacas rojas (ingleses)
con un Tomahawk y más tarde dirigió
una expedición crucial de 400 millas
a Valley Forge para entregar un
suministro vital de maíz blanco a las
Freedom is NOT Free! cont.
I guess the great part of being free is
that we can do that without fear of
retribution from anyone, especially our
government. In my opinion, I think
it is sad that many Americans have
forgotten the importance of such
holidays and that just having a good
time is what has become the norm.
This year, I spent a good part of my 4th
of July watching the American Heroes
Channel’s “The American Revolution”,
tropas hambrientas del General George
Washington.
día, viendo a nuestros líderes indecisos,
mucho partidismo, e incapaces de
unirse como americanos para tomar
buenas decisiones para la nación, va
a ser el trabajo de todos nosotros,
para exigir que aquellos que hemos
escogido hagan las cosas bien. Si no
lo hacen, entonces, debemos ejercer
nuestro derecho como pueblo libre
para sacarlos de sus posiciones.
Este mundo es demasiado inestable, un
mundo lleno de tiranos liderando otras
naciones, y este mundo es aún más
peligroso, cuando los Estados Unidos es
visto por los tiranos como una nación
que pueden manipular o intimidar.
Honremos a los grandes líderes y los
héroes anónimos de nuestra historia
y los que sirven para mantenernos
libres en el presente. Se ha derramado
la sangre de americanos dentro de
nuestra tierra y en los 241 años de
existencia, en muchas naciones en todo
el mundo. Esa sangre fue derramada
para que podamos vivir en una tierra
libre y para que aquellos en otras
naciones, también pudieran vivir en
libertad.
a three-part series that chronicled the
rise of the rebellion, the failures and
setbacks of the colonial mission, and
the ultimate comeback that resulted in
the birth of this great nation.
Most Americans know the heroics
of great men like General George
Washington during the American
Panhandle United
Roller Derby
By: Monica A. Heimes, League President/Safety Director & Dorian N. Busby,
League Treasurer/ Fundraising Director
Panhandle United Roller Derby (PanU)
is a full member of The Women’s Flat
Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and is
currently 270 out of 325 ranked teams.
Through dedication and hard work, the
league has acquired six wins and two
loses during the first half of the 2017
season, and most recently finished
third at “Savannah Summer Slam
Tournament” in Savannah, Georgia.
The PanU All-Star Team is a group of
talented/skilled roller derby skaters
from Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana
and Florida. On June 23rd, the team
packed up their gear and headed
to Savannah, Georgia for “Savannah
Summer Slam”. This WFTDA sanctioned
tournament featured five women’s
roller derby teams, and was the first
tournament for the PanU All-Star team
since the team was established earlier
this year.
Their first bout of the tournament was
on Saturday, June 24th against the
hosting team, the Savannah Derby
Devils. With quick feet and hard hits,
PanU out played the Savannah Derby
Devils with a final score of 292 to 68.
The bracket style tournament allowed
the victorious PanU All-Stars to play
a second bout on Saturday against a
higher-ranking Tallahassee Roller Girls
from Tallahassee, FL.
The PanU All-Stars maintained their
solid blocking and defensive walls
momentum from the first bout during
the first half which allowed the PanU
jammers to score points quickly.
However, during the second half of
the bout, the Tallahassee Roller Girls
maintained a tight lead and eventually
outscored the PanU All Stars with a
final score of 170 to 129. This loss,
would result in the PanU All-Stars
playing a final bout on Sunday, June
25th to battle it out for third place
against the River City Rollergirls from
Richmond, VA. The entire bout was an
intense and strategic game of scoring
points and constant lead changes.
Within the last five jams of the bout,
the PanU All-Stars eventually secured
the lead in points to bring home a 3rd
place victory with a final score of 150
to 106.
With the WFTDA sanctioned games
played during “Savannah Summer
Slam”, PanU anticipates seeing their
WFTDA ranking increase during
the next WFTDA quarterly ranking
announcement.
As we begin July, the 2017 season
is at a halfway point. Your next
opportunities to catch live roller derby
action in the Fort Walton Beach area
All-Stars.
will be on Saturday,
August 19th for a
double header when
YOUR home team,
the Beach Brawl Sk8r
Dolls lace up against
the Clarksvillians
from Clarksville, TN.
Then on September
16th, PanU will host
a double header
against Savannah’s B
and All-Star (Hellians
and Derby Devils
respectively) teams.
The Beach Brawl Sk8r
Dolls will take on the
Hellians, and the Derby
Devils will have a rematch
against PanU
All this action will take place at the
Northwest Florida Fairgrounds in Fort
Walton Beach. Panhandle United Roller
Derby is currently recruiting skaters,
referees and volunteers.
It was an outstanding series and a
great way to spend the 4th of July,
learning about the history of this great
nation and it was inspiring to learn
details about such unsung heroes.
Throughout history, it is the actions of
regular folks who make a difference
in a nation. It is no different today, as
we see our nation’s leaders struggling
with indecision, much partisanship,
and unable to come together as
Americans to make good decisions for
the nation, it is going to be the job of
us all, to demand that those who we
have chosen get their act together. If
they don’t, then, we must exercise our
right as free people to vote them out
of office.
This world is too unstable, a world
filled with tyrants running other
nations, and this world is even more
dangerous, when the United States
of America is seen by those tyrants
as a nation they can manipulate or
intimidate.
Let’s honor those great leaders and
the unsung heroes in our history and
those serving to keep us free in the
present. The blood of Americans has
been spilled within our land, and in
our 241 years of existence, in many
nations throughout the world. That
blood was spilled so that we could live
in a free land and for those in other
nations, so that they too could live in
freedom.
Keep such things in mind next
Memorial Day and 4th of July or
Veteran’s Day, observe them in the
proper manner and with respect, learn
about what they represent, and never
forget, FREEDOM IS NOT FREE.
¿Como empezó St. Jude?
Inseguro sobre la dirección que debería
tomar su vida, el joven Danny Thomas,
buscó guía en San Judas Tadeo, el
santo patrono de las causas perdidas.
Si San Judas señalara el camino que
debiera tomar, Danny lo seguiría. A
Poco tiempo después, comenzó a
enfermedad. Creían que St. Jude podía
ayudar a esas familias que no tenían
otro lugar adonde recurrir. St. Jude
se convertiría en una institución de
investigación única donde los mejores
médicos y científicos del mundo
trabajarían juntos para curar el cáncer
infantil, la enfermedad de las células
falciformes y otras enfermedades
terminales.
construirlo y mantenerlo.
Fondos para financiar el hospital
Danny comenzó a recaudar dinero
para materializar su visión a principios
de la década de 1950. Ya en 1955, los
líderes empresariales de Memphis que
se habían sumado a su causa también
comenzaban a llevar a cabo iniciativas
Children’s Research Hospital a cualquier
grupo que quisiera escucharlos para
pedirles su apoyo. Y lo hacían a un
ritmo tan vertiginoso que Danny y Rose
Marie llegaron a visitar 28 ciudades en
32 días.
Además de la construcción, Danny
sabía que debía encontrar una manera
de financiar la operación anual del
hospital.
estadounidenses podría agradecer a
Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Desde ese día en Chicago, ALSAC ha
sido la entidad responsable de todos
los esfuerzos de recaudación de
fondos del hospital, logrando recaudar
cientos de millones de dólares al año
a través de beneficios y campañas
de recaudación en comunidades
estadounidenses de cualquier
etnicidad, religión o raza.
Hoy en día, ALSAC es la segunda
organización benéfica más importante
del país dedicada al cuidado de la
salud* y subsiste gracias al generoso
apoyo de 9 millones de donantes y de
los esfuerzos de más de 1 millón de
voluntarios de todo el país.
El legado de Danny
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
fue inaugurado el 4 de febrero de
terminales a nivel mundial, y crean
más ensayos clínicos sobre el cáncer
que cualquier otro hospital pediátrico.
Comparten libremente esos avances, y
No descansaran
que ningún niño muera a causa del
cáncer.
Marcando La Diferencia
Making a Difference
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
– Finding Cures. Saving Children
There are so many impressive things
one could say about St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital and the tremendous
positive effect they have had in helping
children from throughout the world
suffering from cancer. We ask our
readers to consider supporting their
mission and donating via their website.
How St. Jude started:
As a young man, Danny Thomas had a
simple goal: to entertain people and be
successful enough at it to provide for his
wife and family. But work wasn’t easy to
come by.
As he and his family struggled, his
despair grew. He wondered if he should
give up on his dreams of acting or
find a steady job. He turned to St. Jude
Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless
causes. “Show me my way in life,” he
vowed to the saint one night in a Detroit
church, “and I will build you a shrine.”
That prayer to St. Jude marked a pivotal
moment in his life. Soon after, he began
finding work, eventually becoming one
of the biggest stars of radio, film and
television in his day.
And as one of the world’s biggest
celebrities, Danny used his fame to fulfill
his vow to St. Jude Thaddeus and to
change the lives of thousands of children
and families.
A unique research institution
Danny’s shrine to St. Jude Thaddeus
was originally to be a general children’s
hospital located somewhere in the
south. Danny’s mentor, Cardinal Samuel
Stritch, recommended he look to
Memphis, Tennessee, the cardinal’s
hometown.
www.conexionflorida.com
By 1955 Danny and a group
of Memphis businessmen
he’d rallied to build the
hospital decided it should
be more than a general
children’s hospital. At the
time, the survival rate for
childhood cancers was 20%,
and for those with acute
lymphoblastic leukemia
(ALL) — the most common
form of childhood cancer —
only 4% of children would
live. They believed that St.
Jude could help these families with
nowhere else to turn. St. Jude would
become a unique research institution
where the world’s best doctors and
scientists would work together to cure
childhood cancer, sickle cell and other
deadly diseases.
And for families with children battling
these diseases, Danny wanted to remove
the burden of treatment costs so they
were free to focus on their child.
The idea of his shrine to St. Jude set,
Danny and his supporters focused on
raising the funds to build and maintain it.
Funding the hospital
Danny began raising money for his
vision in the early 1950s. By 1955, the
Memphis business leaders who’d joined
his cause also began local fundraising
efforts. Danny also wanted to get the
word out across the country about what
he was doing and enlist the support of
everyone he could.
Frequently, Danny and his wife, Rose
Marie, crisscrossed the United States,
speaking about his dream build St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital to
any group that’d listen, asking for their
support. They kept such a hectic pace
that Danny and Rose Marie once visited
28 cities in 32 days.
Along with the construction, Danny
knew he had to find a way to fund the
hospital’s annual operation. He turned
to his fellow Americans of Arabicspeaking
descent. Danny believed
that by supporting St. Jude, this group
of Americans could thank the United
States for the gifts of freedom given
St. Jude cont.
their parents and also be a noble way
of honoring their forefathers who’d
immigrated to America.
Danny’s requests struck a responsive
chord. In 1957, 100 representatives of
the Arab-American community met in
Chicago to form ALSAC® with the sole
purpose of raising funds for the support
of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Since that day in Chicago, ALSAC has
been responsible for all the hospital’s
fundraising efforts, raising hundreds of
millions annually through benefits and
solicitation drives among Americans
of all ethnic, religious and racial
backgrounds.
Today, ALSAC is the nation’s second
largest health care charity* and is
supported by the generosity of 9 million
donors and the efforts of more than 1
million volunteers nationwide.
No child should die in the dawn of life
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
opened its doors on February 4, 1962,
based on Danny’s dream that “no child
should die in the dawn of life.” Since
then, they have made incredible strides
in childhood cancer research; have
helped improve the survival rate of
childhood cancer from 20% to 80%. And
ALL, the disease with a virtual death
sentence in 1962, now has a survival rate
of 94 percent.
Today, it is a world leader in developing
new, improved treatments for children
with cancer, and creates more clinical
trials for cancer than any other children’s
hospital. The hospital freely shares those
breakthroughs, and every child saved
at St. Jude means doctors and scientists
worldwide can use that knowledge to
save thousands more children.
And still today as when they opened our
doors, families never receive a bill from
St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing
or food – because all they should worry
about is helping their child live.
Danny Thomas passed away in 1991,
but he left an enduring legacy and
commitment to saving the lives of
children everywhere. They won’t stop
until no child dies from cancer.
