AITPM National Conference 2012
The Traffic & Transport Merry Go Round
The theme for the conference this year is planning for
growth in travel demand in our cities as urban
densities increase and mobility expectations are
maintained. The challenge has been to develop good
long term transport planning and deliver on transport
projects when commitment is constrained by the short
political cycles occurring at all levels of government.
Papers have been chosen to address the theme
covering topics such as working together, and private
sector versus government involvement in the delivery
of projects and transport services.
The conference keynote address will be by Dr Andre
Dantas from the Brazilian National Association of
Urban Transport Companies who will discuss the latest
developments on implementation of bus rapid transit
systems in various parts of the world.
A plenary session will explore the co-operation
between the four agencies in NSW that are charged
with delivering transport and land use planning. We will
hear from the Director General, Transport for NSW Les
Wielinga, the Director General of Planning and
Infrastructure, Sam Haddad, and Roads and Maritime
Services CE, Peter Duncan.
Parallel sessions will take us through the two days of the
conference covering a range of topics including
• Working together for the greater good
• Data sources for mobility planning and modelling
• Transport planning and area wide strategies
• Management of road space and safer roads
• Mode and travel choices
• Connecting the traveller and accessibility to facilities
We will hear of experiences in planning our transport
corridor space to serve the transport needs of new urban
areas and how we can achieve a better balance of
transport service while maintaining people's travel
choice. Papers will discuss data sources and explain the
use of this data to assist with transport planning and
how valuable it is to provide information back to
transport users. Improved management of the road
space and topics on mode and travel choice will inform
delegates on the latest developments in these areas.
Following the two-day conference there will be a
modelling workshop and a multi-modal tour on
Friday 12 October.

Transport Modelling
Workshop
As congestion levels increase within Australia’s growing
metropolitan areas we face the following challenges:
A. Managing system-wide effects in a holistic way rather
than focusing on one part. Our current methods of
modelling transport do not routinely account for the
behaviour change of a person’s response to congestion.
B. Representing over-saturated conditions (on multiple
modes) at local, corridor and sub-regional levels robustly
in robust transport models.
C. Sourcing appropriate data to be available to enable us
to identify and measure the congestion.
This workshop will address issues around the application of
micro, meso and macro models in improving our
understanding of network-wide congestion effects, and in
assessing solutions for improvement.
• Presentations will outline the current and future
directions for transport modelling from state government
agencies.
• Leading researchers will keep you up-to-date with the
latest thinking on how to tackle the issue of congested
networks.
• State government agency representatives from three
states will provide information on automation and
improvement in data handling for model verification and
calibration.
• Software providers will be on-hand to answer your
questions and give you information on recent
innovations.
• In the interactive group session, participants will pick a
modelling topic of interest and chart a way forward.
This workshop builds on the 2011 AITPM Modelling
Workshop by continuing to broaden our discussions
much further than microsimulation as part of the wider
AITPM Modelling User Group (MUGs) initiative.
Transport Planning on
a Multi-Modal Tour
Experience a multi-modal journey within the transport
corridor between Sydney and Parramatta, and see the
transport implications for Sydney’s north-west regional
development. Along the way you will hear the inside story
from those who are involved in planning and managing
the transport infrastructure.
P
Rate the interchange at North Sydney
and Epping Stations, identify good points
and points for improvement. Learn about
the challenges facing rail improvement to
one of Sydney’s key growth areas.
Change to a bus for a tour of the
North-West Growth Centre and future
station locations. Hear presentations on
the current issues of social equity and
the challenges to change entrenched
travel behaviour.
After lunch, learn about transport
improvements planned for Sydney’s
second largest-CBD and why it supports
the testing of innovative solutions.
Presentations will be followed by a
walk-around to view locations first-hand.
Discuss land use and transport
integration and what makes a
successful transit-oriented development
as you cruise back to Sydney CBD.
