that ‘Love,’ to you, the people of Norwich! With the help of our adverts
and vouchers, we will assist you all in getting more from our great city
and experience things you may not have known existed.
So go on, see what we have to offer this month!
Along with a collection of offers and adverts from businesses around Norwich
we have some interesting reads for you all.
With the summer in full flow it is only fair to say the sun has certainly lifted all
our spirits, and here at Love Norwich we have been out and about enjoying
the sights of our beautiful city. This month we took a wander down the
historic cobbled lane, Elm Hill and marvelled in the history behind this
intriguing lane which dates back to Tudor times. We dined in the delightful
Loch Fyne which more than lived up to our expectations. This month also
saw us visiting the inspirational Hamlet, a Norfolk based charity that supports
children and young adults with disabilities and complex health needs. With
so much around us to be grateful for it seemed only right that I should also
write about opening our minds and hearts to gratitude.
Love Norwich, appropriately named, is all the things we “Love” about Norwich.
All the unique individual businesses and the exquisite historic places that
make our city so beautiful, all the places we love to go and enjoy yourselves,
as well as the businesses we need to help us along the way.
So get in touch tell us what you love!
Till next month much love to you all, from us!
Open Your Mind
and Heart to
Gratitude

Replace your envy with gratitude and turn your
life around today!
I often get asked why I am so happy when
someone buys me the smallest of gifts, or when
someone gives up their time to spend with me,
even if it is only an hour, the answer is simple –
how can I not be happy when I fill my heart with
gratitude. The mere idea that someone thought
of me for just a moment is enough to make me
feel content, no matter how small the gesture, it
has still been a gesture, often showing their
gratitude towards me. Any form of gratitude
should always be returned with further
gratification.
Those who feel less fortunate than others will
often become envious of those who they believe
to be better-off than them. The family with the
five-bedroom detached house or the one with
the posh city centre penthouse, then there is the
one with the Jaguar f type, the person who always
looks so happy, or the person who seems to have
money to burn, the one who looks perfect, who is
the perfect size, the list is endless I am sure.
It is so easy to become so wrapped up in what
we do not have in our lives, we can forget to be
grateful for what we do have. However, the key
to ultimate happiness is gratitude! By learning
to be grateful for what we have we will not only
attract other things into our lives to be grateful
for, but we will also improve all major areas of our
lives, which overall will lead to a life of definitive
happiness. Gratitude improves our health,
relationships, emotions, personality, and career.
Having a grateful heart will improve your
relationships with others and will instantly make
you more attractive, opposed to someone who
is riddled with envy, who can appear ugly despite
their visual appearance. Relationships on all levels
become deeper and healthier when you use gratitude
to show your appreciation of others.
It is almost impossible to be unhappy when you
approach everything with gratitude. Rid yourself
of depression, anxiety and unnecessary stress, by
changing your outlook – look for something in
your life to be grateful for every day. It is
impossible not to smile as you think of a person
you are grateful to know, it is impossible to feel
depressed when you feel gratitude deep within for
the small things in life and it is impossible to feel
stressed about not being the right size, etc., when
you look in the mirror and become grateful for
the person staring back – you are beautiful just
the way you are, so be grateful for every
inch of you.
When gratitude takes over, feelings of envy,
which can ruin your relationships with others,
will disappear and not only allow you to become
content, but it will naturally make you more
optimistic, less self-centered and increase your
self-esteem. Overall, it will make you a happier,
nicer person.
By cultivating the habit of gratitude, you not only
open the doors to the many possibilities that await
you, but you will also live a happier more fulfilled
life. It is simply impossible not to like someone
who shows gratification in every area of their life.
Wake up feeling grateful, and say it out loud
“thank you, thank you, thank you!” Be thankful
for the day, be thankful for every inch of your
body and mind, be thankful for everyone you
will meet that day, be thankful for each
experience, be thankful for your job, be thankful
for the money you will receive and be thankful
you can see the beauty in each new day. As
you show gratitude watch as the universe
automatically gives you more things to be
grateful for, watch as you receive the things
you were once envious of.
I am grateful for everything in my life, I am
grateful for each person I know and each person
I am yet to meet, I am grateful for you and your
time you have given to reading my article and I
send you love and happiness.
Elm Hill
Wandering down the famous cobbled lane, Elm Hill, I could almost
feel the historic whispers with every step I took, this beckoned a
curiosity deep within for a street whose date of exact existence is
unknown. There are, however records of its existence dating back
to the 1200’s.
This intriguing picturesque street is one of the quaintest cobbled streets
to still be in existence, with its timber framed buildings, retaining their
original charm and character it is no wonder this street, which is steeped
in history, is an attraction for so many.
The name Elm Hill originates from the Elm trees which stood
successively in the square since the 16th Century; however, the tree that
stands today is no longer an Elm tree due to the presence of Dutch elm
disease in the 1900’s.
A major fire that took place in 1507 destroyed almost all the street, but it
was quickly rebuilt, and now this pictorial street houses a collection of
beautiful individual homes, specialty shops and independent cafes. The
Briton Arms being one of the only survivors of the fire is one of the most
well-known buildings in Norwich. Being an earlier Tudor building which
was formally an inn, The Briton Arms attract a lot of attention especially
from film directors.
Elm Hill, which runs parallel to the river Wensum housed some of the
city’s wealthiest merchants in the medieval period, and has provided
sixteen recorded citizens to serve Norwich as Mayor or Sheriff. Yet by the
20th century the cobbled lane had lost its importance and had fallen into
a slum largely due to the decline of weaving industry in the 19th century.
In 1927, the Norwich Corporation wanted to demolish the area to rid it of
the squalor and poverty it had become known for, but their plans soon
changed after they were persuaded at the last moment to embrace the
ideas of the Norwich Society to renovate the area to restore its former
glory. Today, with only one or two exceptions, Norwich City Council still
owns most of the buildings.
Being one of the oldest, most picturesque streets in the country Elm Hill
attracts a lot of attention and has in recent years been rated as being one
of Britain’s prettiest streets. So go on take a leisurely wander for yourself
down this beautiful lane.
When Andy Lane and Johnny Noble first started
selling their oysters in the 1970’s from a small
shack on the coast of Scotland, who would have
known the business would evolve into a well-loved
nationwide chain of quality restaurants.
Hosting 37 restaurants up and down the country,
Loch Fyne is known for providing fresh,
sustainably sourced, wholesome food; much of
which still comes from the same loch where Andy
and Johnny first started.
Norwich homes one of these spectacular
restaurants, which is situated on St Giles Street,
one of Norwich’s oldest medieval streets. The
restaurant is housed in a former ironmongers
dating back to the 1700s and still has some of the
key features including the shop front. This idyllic
positioning is in perfect fitting with their
endeavour to combine the old with the new.
With their new summer menu looking delightful
I was anxious to try it for myself. Upon entering
the restaurant, as always, we were greeted by a
friendly, happy face who showed us to our table.
Being a summer evening it was still light out and
rather hot, but the restaurant lighting was set
perfectly, creating the desired ambience, and the
inside temperature was refreshing.
When it came to menu choices, the drink was easy
for me it must be a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc,
so although their wine menu looked plentiful, we
were anxious to get to the food menu, therefore
we went with our usual tipple. Spoilt for choice, I
was pleased I took along my friend who is always
happy to share, we decided to get starters and
mains where we could do exactly that.
For starters, we chose to go for the Grilled
Scottish King Scallops and the Salt and Pepper
Squid. Both dishes were more than pleasing to
the eye, both being so beautifully dressed, it was
clear attention to detail was a key element to this
delightful restaurant. Excited by what was before
me, I started with the scallops, these really were
as magnificent as they looked, so with enthusiasm
I reached for my half of the squid and was just as
delighted with what I found. The starters really did
exceed our expectations.
King Prawn Malabar Curry along with their
Seafood Tagliatelle were our two choices for
mains. Once again, both dishes arrived looking
extremely tantalising, and tasted just as good
as they looked. Both were bursting with flavour,
mouth-wateringly wholesome and so obviously
fresh. I was sure we had chosen the best items on
the menu, although I am eager to return soon to
try the other dishes on offer.
Overall, what can I say, I found Loch Fyne fully
catered for us in more ways than one! The fish was
a fresh as they claimed it to be, the dishes were so
carefully arranged and each tasted superb. The
restaurant itself was pleasant with its charming
choice of decor and the staff made the experience
even more charming.
Look no further than Loch Fyne for your choice
of seafood!
Overcoming
Barriers and
Creating
Opportunities
In the context of human life, if asked
to define the word normal, each of us
would have our own perception of how
we perceive normality. The able bodied
among us, would of course suggest that
the way in which they move freely with
no difficulty or hesitation was the norm.
Some may suggest, the ability to engage
in everyday conversation with whomever
they wish was also the norm. However,
our society is made up of many different
but beautiful souls who each see their
own vision of normal.
It has become evident through our better
understanding of those with disabilities,
there are many ways to communicate,
many ways in which to enjoy life and
many ways to show our affection.
The Hamlet opens the door to many
possibilities for those with disabilities
and allows them to be their own kind of
normal, their own kind of beautiful,
and their own kind of them in a safe
environment, a place they feel content
to just be themselves.
Having visited both the adult’s centre
and the children’s centre to see for myself
what The Hamlet is all about, I was
utterly lost for words, yet touched deeply
by what a difference The Hamlet makes to
so many people’s lives.
The Hamlet is a Norfolk based charity
that supports children and young adults
with disabilities and complex health
needs. The charity was first established
in 1972 by Jack and Margaret Wymer, a
very inspirational couple who both
suffered from birth with Spinal Muscular
Atrophy – a slowly progressive disease
affecting all the voluntary muscles, this
meant neither of them had ever walked,
yet in their book “Another Door Opens,”

Margaret described their life together
as being all they ever dreamed of. Their
moving and very inspirational book,
which can be found on The Hamlet
website, speaks of their astonishing
achievement which was groundbreaking
for not just themselves but thousands of
others with disabilities.
From the Toy Library, where the charity
first began at the home of the Wymers,
the charity has evolved to the expansion
of offering a wide range of high quality
services to support over 500 families each
year from across Norfolk and North
Suffolk. These services promote
integration and inclusion by breaking
down barriers that often exist for people
with disabilities.
It is important to realise the work that
The Hamlet does would not be possible
without the funds to do so. A lot of their
funding is based purely upon fundraising
or donations, without such funds a lot of
what The Hamlet offers would be
non-existent.
Those who have donated or been involved
in fundraising events have enabled the
charity to support local families of
children and young adults with
disabilities and complex health needs.
Without such generosity, backing and
encouragement none of this would be
possible. From the participation in the
many events the charity holds throughout
the year to donating what you can, you
can make a real difference!
Everyday funding is needed for the
charity to purchase the simplest of
items to the most complex.
The Hamlet’s events are
always fun and well
thought-out by their
organisers to ensure
a fun day for all.
Stay fit, trim and healthy with Rosemary
Conley’s workshop while raising money
for this great charity, taking place on
Wednesday 27th September, or take part
in their exclusive Halloween
Masquerade Ball being held at Langley
Abbey on Friday 27th October.
It is never too late to get involved, never
too late to help in any way you can, and
never too late to make a difference!
Get involved today!
