NEW NORDIC STEAKS, GRILL & WINERY

TO HOST THE JAZZ AND WINE EVENTS WEEK

New Nordic Steaks,Grill & Winery, located at

Pratumnak soi.4 Pattaya is hosting a Jazz and

Wine events week with a series of events this

month - July 25th, 27th and 29th 2017 from 7pm

to 11pm.

The concept is, over the course of a week, to

blend three live jazz music experiences with

wine tasting from all over the world. On the

three separate days there will be wine tasting

of French wines, Australian wines and Chilean

wines.

Wine and Jazz go together very well. Indeed

every style of music has its drink of choice.

Country music is known for tequila, while rock

and roll loves its whiskey and beers.

Jazz is a music of nuances and layers of sound

and tones that don’t necessarily strike you right

away but reveal themselves over time. Similarly,

wine is tasted and the undertones reveal themselves

over time too. Wine is to be savored just

as Jazz music is. With good wine tasting comes

the reward of layers and nuances of flavors, as

complex as a good jazz composition.

The Jazz music quality will be top notch with

famous artists playing on each night.

On the 25th July it will be French Night and the

artist is Yves Baron. He is a critically acclaimed

Thai-French singer famous for his compelling

voice and elegant performances. Yves Baron

is often nicknamed “Le Tenor” by fans and

critics alike. He has played at more than 2,500

international venues across four continents including

Europe, Asia, Africa and the USA and

is a master vocal coach at Bangkok’s Superstar

Academy. His performances have received

High Tower Co., Ltd. Tel: 038 411 009

rave reviews. He blends the power of opera

with the class of jazz, and is guaranteed to give

you a night to remember!

French wine tasting will be an integral part of

the night, which will also feature a range of

enticing finger foods.

On the 27th July it will be Australian Night and

the artist is Court Graves. He is renowned for

adding a Jazz style to famous American classics

whilst still retaining their original appeal.

Court has performed in New York, Los Angeles,

and London in off-Broadway, jazz, and cabaret

venues. His exceptional voice and eloquent

charm goes perfectly hand in hand with an elegant

evening of finger food and Australian wine

tasting. His enchanting performance will surely

capture your attention throughout the night!

On the 29th July it will be Spanish night and

the artist will be Fem.A born entertainer, Fem

started singing lessons at only13! She is the

winner of Thai Idol. Her mesmerizing voice has

the power to leave any audience in awe. As a

singer of great strength and calibre, she quickly

gained momentum in the industry. Throughout

the last few years, she has performed at major

jazz festivals throughout Thailand, earned

great praise with the girl’s band “Apple Girls”

and gained the position as a voice trainer at the

Regent’s International School.

The 3 nights will also feature 3 house band

artists including Buno Leflanchec, Pong on

Percussions and Richard on Guitar.

Buno is a jazz pianist and composer. Graduated

from Boston he works all over Europe, Asia and

USA.

Pong is said to be born with drumsticks in his

hand as he developed a strong love for the

instrument already as a child! He has performed

at a series of jazz events across Asia

and we are truly honoured to announce him as

part of the house band for our much-awaited

jazz festival!

Richard is dedicated to a multitude of musical

genres ranging from Hip Hop and Jazz to Rock

and Pop. He had a number 1 hit in Belgium.

Undoubtedly, this highly versatile artist has the

ability to adapt to any artist performing on stage!

On all three nights finger food prepared by chef

Joel will compliment the various high quality

wines and Jazz music to give a perfect atmosphere.

The ticket price is 1,200 Baht and includes 4

glasses of wine, food buffet and music. For

DAIMLER COMMERCIAL

VEHICLES AND THAI ALLOY

BOTH PLAN TO SET UP PLANTS

IN CHONBURI PROVINCE

Daimler Commercial Vehicles

Thailand, a subsidiary of the famous

Daimler Company in Germany

is expected to invest in a

new plant in Chonburi Province to

produce its Fuso trucks.

The facility, planned to be in Laem

Chabang district, is expected to

be operational by November 2017

and will boast an annual capacity

of 3,000 trucks. The company will

invest in the infrastructure for production,

while at the same time

will engage with subcontractors

for assembly.

Fuso is the brand that was originally

owned by the Mitsubishi

Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation

in Japan, but Daimler AG bought

an 89.3% controlling stake in the

company in 2006.

They previously owned a plant

in Thailand in Lat Krabang but it

closed in 2009 due to the after

effects of the 2008-2009 global

financial crisis. Hong Kong listed

Tan Chong took over the plant in

late 2009 whilst the holding company,

Thailand Fuso Trucks Thailand,

maintained the distribution

network.

The move to open a new plant in

Chonburi Province comes after

the previous partnership with Tan

Chong International Ltd came to

an end, due to an ability to renew

the seven year long contract in

2016.

Daimler established a new local

entity in Thailand late last year

and expects the overall truck

business in Thailand to grow by

up to 10% to around 20,000 units

this year.

Meanwhile, Thai Alloy Manufacturing,

a manufacturer of alloy

wheels is investing 1 billion baht

to create a new manufacturing

base in Chonburi.

The privately owned company is

looking to have the plant up and

running by late 2017 and to add

capacity in the region of 600,000

wheels per year. The new plant

will have brand new state of the

art automated machinery in place.

Managing Director of Thai Alloy

Manufacturing, Ken Chuang was

quoted as saying, “Our existing

plant in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli

is operating close to the maximum

capacity of 720,000 wheels. A

new plant is desperately needed

to handle the flood of orders.”

The aim is to double capacity

with the new plant. Almost three

quarters of the company’s output

is exported around the world

to Europe, USA, Africa and Asia,

with the rest sold to Thai companies.

Thai Alloy Manufacturing

has been in business since 1993.

The expectation is that growth in

the automotive industry worldwide

will remain steady and this will improve

the outlook for companies

such as Thai Alloy who supply the

industry.

Ken Chuang was also quoted

as saying, “We are very upbeat

about our business prospects

after the second facility starts

operations. We expect sales to

double in 2018.”

“Bits n

Bytes”

STEVE DICKENS

These days almost all of us carry very capable cameras around with

us as part of our smart phones, but do we use them wisely? Here is

a short guide to improving your smart phone photography.

Straighten out your horizon

A crooked horizon can ruin any

landscape shot. It’s not always

possible to get it exactly right when

you shoot it, but take the time to

straighten things up before sharing.

Use HDR mode, or shoot in raw

if you’re feeling ambitious

Landscape photos are a great

opportunity to leverage the HDR

setting in your camera app. It may

be enabled by default, but you can

turn it on from your camera app

settings, if not. When enabled,

HDR mode will take several photos

in rapid succession and then combine

the image data into one photo.

As a result, it will preserve more details

that might otherwise get blown

out or lost in dark shadows. This is

especially handy in high-contrast

scenes like bright daylight. Be sure

to check your results after shooting,

though, because HDR can

sometimes make a scene look unnaturally

flat in tone.

If you’re feeling ambitious, you

can also try shooting in raw mode,

which is a capability most smartphones

attained just recently (your

best bet to enable this is to use an

advanced camera app like Camera+).

When the camera creates

a JPEG version of the image, it

clips off image information in the

darkest and brightest parts of the

photo. You’ll need to use a more

advanced editing app like Adobe’s

Lightroom Mobile to take advantage

of that extra data, but it can provide

a lot more flexibility in terms of the

overall look of the finished product.

Pick the perfect time of day to go

shooting

The definition of “good” light can

vary from person to person depending

on their tastes, but even

a truly majestic view can be ruined

by harsh overhead light. If you

want warm, magical illumination,

plan to get to your location around

the start of golden hour, which is

roughly an hour before sunrise and

then again before sunset. Using

an app like the awesome Photo

Pills will let you know exactly what

to expect from the sun at any given

time. If you don’t want to spend

the money on Photo Pills, you can

use other free golden hour apps or

even web-based utilities like golden-hour.com.

Don’t forget the details

Epic scenery can be hypnotizing in

its beauty, but once you’ve got your

wide shots, look around for smaller

features and details that can help

set the scene. Find some leaves

bathed in sweet golden hour light

or get a close-up of the texture of

some particularly interesting rocks.

The detail shots will be pretty on

their own, but they will also give

context to the landscape photos

when you share them online, especially

in a series.

Be careful where you place the

sun

Putting the sun within the frame

of your picture can be tricky business.

The intense brightness will

often cause the rest of the image to

darken, and flare from the rays can

spread across the image, washing

out contrast and introducing

odd-looking blobs of color—typically

purple, green, or sometimes

white. Flare can happen even if the

sun is just outside your frame, so

try shading the lens of your camera,

using your hand like the brim of a

hat to keep the sun from directly

hitting the lens.

So, there we have it … go and make

the best of your smart phone! You

don’t always need to lug around

a full blown DSLR camera to get

good results!

ASEAN STILL MAKES THE RUNNING

ON AEC INITIATIVES, PART TWO

As noted in the last issue, while

the Asean Economic Community

(AEC) has entered its 18th month

of existence, there’s really not a lot

of material published about what

is happening within the community

with most interest still revolving

around Asean itself.

In May, the Finance Ministers

and Central Bank Governors of

Asean, China, Japan and Korea

(ASEAN+3), convened their 20th

meeting, in Yokohama, Japan.

The President of the Asian Development

Bank (ADB), the Director

of ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research

Office (AMRO), the Deputy

Secretary General of ASEAN, and

the Deputy Managing Director of

the International Monetary Fund

(IMF) were also present.

Apart from being generally upbeat

about their own economies,

they were also optimistic about

the cyclical return to health of the

global economy as well.

The ministers reaffirmed their

‘commitment to structural reforms

that will lift potential growth of

the region and enhance member

countries’ resilience. These reforms

should be appropriately tailored,

prioritized and sequenced, depending

on country-specific circumstances.

We will continue to

adopt the appropriate policy mix

to achieve balanced growth and

financial stability. We will carefully

calibrate and clearly communicate

our macroeconomic and structural

policy actions, including the use of

macro-prudential measures, to reduce

policy uncertainty, minimize

negative spillovers and promote

transparency. ‘

The ministers stated they ‘recognized

the importance and benefits

of open capital markets and of

improving the system underpinning

international capital flows

while continuing to enhance the

monitoring of capital flows and to

strengthen the management of

risks stemming from excessive

capital flow volatility. An open and

resilient financial system is crucial

to supporting sustainable growth

and development.’

Strengthening the Regional Financial

Cooperation Chiang Mai Initiative

Multilateralisation (CMIM)

was also a key plank in the May

meeting with the final communiqué

noting ‘It is encouraging…that

the CMIM, with its current size of

USD 240 billion, is at the center of

our regional financial safety net,

complemented by the network

of bilateral swap arrangements

in the region amounting to more

than USD 160 billion.’ The ministers

‘affirmed our commitment

to further strengthen the CMIM as

an essential part of the regional

financial safety net…[and] noted

that the CMIM also contributes to

a stronger global financial safety

net with the IMF at its center.’

The ministers stated they were

pleased with the progress of the

ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research

Office (AMRO), seeing

it as contributing ‘to the region’s

macroeconomic and financial

stability, by delivering high quality

and original surveillance to member

economies, and providing

strong support for the CMIM. We

continue to support AMRO in

enhancing its surveillance and

organizational capacity to fulfill

its mandate as an independent,

credible and professional regional

organization acting as a trusted

policy advisor to

members in the

ASEAN+3 region. ‘

CHILD ABANDONMENT

Child abandonment occurs

when a child is knowingly or secretly

left behind by his/her parent

or guardian, without any regard

for the child’s physical health,

safety or well-being and with the

intention of completely abandoning

the child to willingly renounce

parental responsibility.

According to the Child Protection

Act B.E. 2546 (2003), guardians

of a child are forbidden to act as

follows:

1. Abandon a child at a nursery

or health care facility, or with a

person employed to look after the

child, or at a public place or any

other place, with the intention of

not taking him or her back;

2. Neglect a child at any place

without arranging for appropriate

safety protection or care;

3. Deliberately or neglectfully

withhold from a child things that

are necessary for sustaining the

child’s life or health, to an extent

which seems likely to cause

physical or mental harm to the

child;

4. Treat a child in ways or manners

which hinder his/her growth

or development or which constitutes

unlawful caring.

Some of the primary causes

of child abandonment include:

• unwanted or unplanned

pregnancy

• poverty

• poor parenting skills

• depression

• mental and physical illness

of either the child or parents

• drug or alcohol abuse

• lack of education

• lack of cultural values

• the child having disability

Child Abandonment is a criminal

offense. Whoever abandons a

child not over nine years of age in

any place, with intent to completely

abandon such child in a manner

so that such child shall be without

a person to take care of, shall be

punished with imprisonment not

exceeding three years or fined

not exceeding Six Thousand

Baht, or both.

If a child dies as a result of abandonment,

the offender may face

reckless abandonment charges

and shall be punished with imprisonment

of three to fifteen years.

If a child suffered grievous bodily

harm as a result of abandonment,

the offender shall be punished

with imprisonment of six months

to ten years.

Helping an abandoned child

1. If the child is wounded or injured,

the child should be taken

to a hospital immediately to get

proper treatment.

2. Report the incident to the nearest

Police Station. Police Officers

will investigate and track down the

parents or any relative of the child

and attempt to contact them.

3. Contact the organization Group

Homes for Children and Family

in Chonburi Province at 038-240-

220 / 038-240-135, or through their

hotline 1300. This organization is

governed by the Ministry of Social

Development and Human Security,

which has the main duty to protect

children’s rights and welfare. The

abandoned child/children are then

taken to the center, to check their

health, to test their Intelligence

Quotient (I.Q.), and to examine

their mental status and behavior.

After the assessment, the abandoned

child/children will then be

transferred too the organizations

which are suitable for them.

The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) project

is much bigger than U-tapao itself and spans

some 30,000 rai across three Eastern Seaboard

provinces, namely Chonburi, Rayong and Chachoengsao.

The EEC will be designated as

Thailand’s new growth area and aims to attract

30 international companies in the first phase

and possibly many more to follow.

High tech activities such as smart electronics

and robotics for industry are being targeted as

well as bio fuels, digital medical services and

biotechnologies.

The aerotropolis model will cover an area of

around 10 to 20 kilometres from U-tapao airport

and will see government investment.

U-TAPAO TO BECOME AN “AEROTROPOLIS”,

200BN BAHT IN INVESTMENT EXPECTED

According to the Industrial Estate Authority of

Thailand, U-tapao airport is expected to become

the centre of an “aerotropolis”, where infrastructure

and the local economy are centred around

an airport. As such it is expected to see at least

200 billion baht in new investment. The idea is

to see U-tapao become the centre of an entirely

new community within the Eastern Economic

Corridor.

The plans for U-tapao are two fold. On the one

hand there will be an expansion and significant

modernisation of the airport for better transport

services. On the other hand, there will be a large

expansion of U-tapao’s aircraft maintenance

and repair service offerings. Eventually U-tapao

is expected to become a major aviation hub for

Asean.

Mr Veerapong Chaiperm, governor of the Industrial

Estate Authority of Thailand was quoted

as saying, “The government wants to make

U-tapao an aerotropolis, the centre of infrastructure

that will link the airport to expanding cities

growing out in rings from the airport.”

Mr Kanit Sangsuphan, secretary general of the

Eastern Economic Corridor Office was quoted

as saying, “Starting this year, the government

plans to spend 10 to 20 years gradually expanding

and modernising the U-tapao airport

area, investing in infrastructure in that radius.”

The airport itself is expected to handle up to

15 million passengers within just five years and

to double this figure to 30 million passengers

within 10 years.

The Board of Investment is involved closely in

a working relationship with the Eastern Economic

Corridor Office in shaping investment

incentives in order to attract new multinational

companies to the area.

Mr Kanit Sangsuphan was also quoted as

saying, “All the regulations and incentives are

expected to be finalised and put into the EEC

law which is due to be voted on by the National

Legislation Assembly and implemented by the

end of this year.”

FITNESS & YOU

They are marketed as the best

dumbbells in the world, and for

anyone who wants to train in

the privacy of their own home

but has limited space, they are

probably the ideal solution for

a weight rack. They are Power-

Blocks, and although not cheap,

are a piece of exercise equipment

is designed and virtually

guaranteed to last for a very,

very long time. And they work,

really well, being the perfect

weight-training tool for those

with limited storage space.

..................................................

So, what are PowerBlocks?

First released onto the market

only in 1993, PowerBlocks

are usually made of urethane.

This is, basically, a kind of rubber

which doesn’t leave marks

and is known for is durability. A

single set of Powerblock dumbbells

negates the need to have

a range of ordinary dumbbells

and weight plates lying around.

Basically, having a Powerblock

set is the equivalent to having

around eight or so separate

dumbbells of varying heaviness.

To the gym-goer who is used to

standard dumbbells, the Power-

Blocks initially may feel strange,

being square rather than round.

Very quickly though it becomes

apparent the shape is not a limiting

factor in any way to doing a

good workout.

..................................................

A PowerBlock dumbbell has a

selector pin, on one side of each

PowerBlock, and this allows

the user to quickly and easily

change the selected weight in

steps of either five or 10 pounds

(2.5 to five kilos), depending on

which model of PowerBlock is

being used. Weight changes are

instantaneous, there are no extra

parts to tighten, and the colour-coded

bands make it easy

to see which weight is selected.

large or small hands. At the

center of the core is a firm textured

handgrip that provides a

secure, non-slip grip. Grasp the

handgrip and lift upward. The

selected weight slides smoothly

free of the remaining stack.

..................................................

The selector pin securely locks

the weight plates to the handle

with multiple points of contact.

The pin won’t come loose, no

matter how fast you move or

shake the dumbbell, what exercises

you perform, or how much

weight you use. This is a great

ultimate combination of security

and adjustability.

..................................................

There are many reasons why

people don’t or won’t go to train

in a gym. If you are the kind of

person who is looking to get into

better shape, but doesn’t want

the hassle of joining a gym, but

is sufficiently motivated to spend

around 20 to 30 minutes a day

for three or four days a week in

the comfort of your own home,

then PowerBlocks could be the

perfect exercise ‘tool’.

After all, you can choose what

time to do a workout; how long

HOW TO MAKE SOCIAL MEDIA

WORK FOR YOUR BUSINESS

There are currently more than 1.5

billion active Facebook users, 320

million Twitter users & 100 million

active Linkedin users.

Social Media opens up a whole

new world of Online Marketing

for small business owners. Even

if you haven’t got your website

up and running yet, you can still

connect with potential customers

through platforms such as Facebook,

Twitter & Linkedin.

Although these three popular

platforms all involve connecting

with your customers online, they

do need very different strategies.

Facebook is the most ‘social’ of

the Social Media platforms and

in order to succeed here you will

need to let your customers see

the personal side of your business

through humour, helpful hints and

honest feedback about your services.

Don’t sell your product or service

on Facebook, instead encourage

users to leave reviews on your

Facebook page which act as

‘Social Proof’ that your company

is trustworthy and offer free advice

and tips related to your industry.

Don’t lock your content away and

ask for someone’s email address

before handing over any content,

that’s like walking up to someone

in a bar and asking for a date

before you’ve even asked their

It is also a great way to connect

Linkedin is the most professional

and the place where you should

Joining groups, commenting on

discussions and posting links to

relevant articles are just some of

the ways in which you can start to

get noticed on Linkedin. Remember,

that it is a corporate platform

YOU HAVE A BUMP ON YOUR SHOULDER AFTER A FALL. YOU ARE TOLD YOU HAVE

A SHOULDER SEPARATION OR AC JOINT DISLOCATION. NOW WHAT DO YOU DO?

A shoulder separation is an injury to the acromio

clavicular (AC) joint on the top of the shoulder,

where the collarbone (clavicle) meets the highest

point of the shoulder blade (acromion). An

injury to the AC joint is common, often caused

by a blow to the shoulder, or a fall onto an outstretched

hand. The fall injures the ligaments

that surround and stabilize the AC joint, forcing

the clavicle to detach from the acromion. This

creates a bump or bulge above the shoulder.

The shoulder and neck muscles contract a bit

as the shoulder no longer has the strut of the

clavicle to hold it out to length and provide normal

stability.

An AC joint separation is divided into various

categories depending on the severity of the

damage. Mild AC joint injuries (Type I and II)

may respond to conservative treatment such

as ice, a sling and physical therapy. More severe

injuries (Type III, IV, V and VI) are typically

treated with surgery. When these ligaments are

badly torn, they never heal on their own because

the clavicle is elevated past the healing

distance of the torn ligaments.

There remains some controversy about the

best way to treat moderate Type III shoulder separations.

Although some orthopedists choose

the non-operative option, in many cases the

shoulders end up uncomfortable and somewhat

unstable. Athletes who are overhead throwers

or who play tennis, volleyball, and squash,

are significantly weakened by a Type III joint

dislocation for up to a year after injury, and often

mildly affected permanently. Knowing this,

many of our athlete patients choose to have the

injury repaired. The rationale for early repair is

that freshly torn ligaments can be sutured back

together and backed up by wrapping an allograft

tissue around the elevated clavicle.

It is, in our opinion, the safest and strongest

way to rebuild the AC joint with the least complication

rate. Possible complications can be

loss of fixation or loss of stability, which most

commonly occurs when a patient has a repeat

fall during the early healing period.

Another reason to consider repair is that the

long-term outcome of a dislocated AC joint

seems to be painful arthritis at the AC joint

itself, which is somewhat puzzling since the

clavicle is displaced outside the joint. However,

it appears that abnormal forces and motions,

which intermittently cause the clavicle to interact

with the acromion, lead to the degenerative

change over time. The early restoration of the

AC joint may prevent this subsequent AC joint

arthritis.

Many patients take a wait-and-see approach

and then choose to have a late AC joint reconstruction.

The results are also good, but sometimes

not quite as excellent as an early repair,

before the surrounding tissues stretch out.

On the first day, patients can ride a stationary

bike, begin core exercises and scapular stabilization

exercises and obtain a cardiovascular

work out to build a fitness program. Immediate

exercise sends healing endorphins to the torn

tissues, keeps the mind in a good space and

keeps the patient feeling like an athlete in training

rather than a patient in rehabilitation. A

prompt repair and focused rehab can ensure

rapid return to full activities. Significant AC joint

injuries are another example of how conservative

care should mean early repair, not non-operative

care, when the torn tissues can be fixed.

shoulder specialist at Phyathai Sriracha Hospital

THAILAND HAS AMONGST

THE CHEAPEST FLIGHTS

IN THE WORLD

According to a report by online

travel agent Kiwi.com, Thailand

rates within the top ten countries

worldwide for cheap flights.

Thailand managed to secure the

8th position for cheapest flights

in an index that covers the average

cost of flights in some eighty

countries. Malaysia held top position

with Bulgaria, India, Turkey

and Romania filling up the rest of

the top 5 positions in that order.

On the other end of the scale

Belgium had the most expensive

flights, with the lowest five positions

for cheapness occupied by

the Netherlands, Chile, the United

Arab Emirates and Qatar.

The index showed that the average

cost of travel for Thailand, per

100 km, came in at 6.20 Euros or

approximately 237 Thai Baht. This

was an average based on 3.69

Euros on short haul flights per

100km on low cost airlines and

7.56 Euros on full service airlines

as well as long haul flights on full

service airlines at 9.35 Euros and

on low cost airlines at 4.18 Euros.

The cheapest country, Malaysia,

was some way ahead with average

prices 62% less expensive

than Thailand coming in at 3.84

Euros per 100 km.

The index presented by Kiwi.com

(previously known as Skyscraper)

took into account low cost carriers,

full service carries and flights

of all durations including long

haul, medium haul and short haul

flights and including domestic and

international flights.

For international flights prices

were based on travel from the

county’s main international airport

hubs to several international

destinations both near and far.

For domestic flights, the prices

used were based on travel from

the capital city to 5 significant

city destinations within the same

country. In small countries where

there may not be many domestic

routes, the five shortest international

flights to major cities

in neighbouring countries were

used.

Comparisons were carried out on

spot days, using for the same day

of travel for each country so as

not to have seasonal factors influence

the statistics between the

travel dates. Then various same

day travel dates were selected

across the year so that any price

deviations that occurred over time

such as seasonal factors or fuel

price changes could be fairly averaged

into the overall index.

Oliver Dlouhy, chief executive of

Kiwi.com was quoted as saying,

“Egypt and Turkey for example

saw a decline in ticket prices because

of a decrease in demand

as a result of regional turmoil.”

Qatar’s price per 100km of travel

on low cost airlines was a whopping

80.40 Euros, meaning these

airlines cost more than many full

service airlines in other countries.

Sweden’s international flights on

low cost airlines were the cheapest

at just 1.20 Euros per 100km.

Shanghai Disneyland sees 11

Shanghai Disneyland received

more than 11 million visitors in is

first year, considerably more than

the company’s expected visitor

of the visitors to come from the

Shanghai area, but the theme

country.

Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney,

was quoted as saying, “We have

Shanghai Disneyland took 17

Since Chinese people have not

in the same way that people in the

It is hoped that the theme

Bob Iger, was further quoted as

been due to a steady flow of Chinese

IPOs hitting the local markets.

At the same time foreign banks

are retreating with fewer jobs

available and more staff chasing

them. Packages have become

less attractive and many expats

are returning home or chasing

jobs with lower pay and fewer

perks.

Chen Shuang, chief executive of

China Everbright Ltd, the Hong

Kong investment arm of stateowned

China Everbright Group,

was quoted as saying, “When I

first joined the company 14 years

ago, we could barely recruit the

right people as we couldn’t offer a

good salary,” adding, “But now, it’s

much easier to recruit top talent,

even those from large Wall Street

banks, which was unimaginable in

the past.”

Singapore property market

shows confusing signs.

In Singapore, prices of property

are still moderately falling, and

supply is certainly not tight. Yet

developers are paying ever-higher

prices for land and the volume of

transactions has picked up. On

the one hand the property market

looks to be still in a downturn, but

on the other a recovery looks to

be starting.

Winston Lee, regional head of

special projects for property website

PropertyGuru and a Singapore

landlord, was quoted as saying,

“Usually in a property cycle, in

a down-cycle, the indicator of a

bounce back does not start with

price. It actually starts with the

volume,” adding, “So that volume

bounce back sent a certain signal

and also gives a confidence

booster to the property developers

that the market in Singapore

might have bottomed out.”

Land holdings on the part of developers

are at quite a low level

and supply of new land is being

held back. Some developers are

looking to buy older buildings to

demolish and them and rebuild on

the existing site.

One driver of end user demand

is the spectre of interest rate rises.

While further downside in

prices can’t be ruled out, buyers

are keen to lock in low long-term

mortgage rates. This may be driving

the demand and it could be

that supply will get tighter again in

the near future.

Director, Tan Chong International Ltd. We are

thrilled to launch this new vehicle built on the

new Subaru Global Platform, with improved interior

and exterior styling. With this, we are confident

that the All-New Subaru XV will exceed

expectations and deliver a driving experience

that is second to none.”

The All-New Subaru XV features:

• Brand-new Subaru Global Platform, which

delivers less shake and less body roll, and

way more fun

• 2.0-litre Direct Injection Naturally Aspirated

Boxer Engine

• Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive equipped with

X-MODE

• Rugged and sporty design with enhanced

interior and exterior quality

• Enhanced safety features such as High

Beam Assist, Steering Responsive

Headlights and Subaru Rear View Detection

Naturally Aspirated Engine which produces

156PS at 6000rpm:

• Subaru XV 2.0i

• Subaru XV 2.0i-S

shift control and 7-speed manual mode function

which enables the driver with greater control.

In addition to Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel

Drive system, the All-New Subaru XV now

comes equipped with X-MODE, which enhances

driving performance on challenging terrain

through optimised integrated control of the engine,

all-wheel drive system, brakes and other

functions. The Hill Descent Control setting gives

drivers greater peace of mind by maintaining

low speeds on downhill slopes.

The Subaru Global Platform dramatically increased

the All-New Subaru XV’s rigidity

throughout the body and chassis by over 70

per cent compared to previous models. This

reduces vibrations and body roll, which results

in a quiet, smooth ride. A quicker steering gear

ratio and lower centre of gravity has also been

achieved which empowers drivers with highly

responsive steering and straight line stability.

The All-New Subaru XV features a distinctive

rugged and sporty design that incorporates the

company’s new DYNAMIC x SOLID design

philosophy. This will bring Subaru’s aesthetic

designs to the next level with detailed finishes

in the interior and exterior.

The exterior features Subaru’s iconic hexagonal

grille with C-shaped headlights, matte-black

cladding on the front bumper and a new aluminium

wheel design. The new vehicle sits in

a wide and low stance, underlining the rugged

character of the All-New Subaru XV, while combining

advanced styling with superior aerodynamics

while retaining the high ground clearance

of 220mm.

An 8.0-inch touch-screen display infotainment

system is featured in the interior which offers

Apple CarPlay that enable drivers to stay connected

safely. The spacious design flow in the

All-New Subaru XV gives a sporty, yet refined

interior that surpasses its class. In addition,

functionalities such as all-round visibility, cabin

space and cargo room have been improved.

Subaru takes upmost pride in safety and the

All-New Subaru XV recently won the Grand Prix

Award in Japan New Car Assessment Program

(JNCAP) Collision Safety Performance Assessment

with the highest score ever.

Passive safety in the All-New Subaru XV has

also been improved as a result of the new

Subaru Global Platform’s frame structure, with

enhanced body strength resulting from an increased

use of high-tensile steel. This enables

improved energy absorption in the event of collision

by 40 per cent over present models.

High Beam Assist technology is featured on the

All-New Subaru XV which uses a monocular

camera that is integrated into the interior rearview

mirror. It detects preceding and oncoming

vehicles and automatically switches headlights

between high and low beam. The automatic

antiglare function on the interior mirror uses a

sensor to detect strong light from sources such

as the headlights of following vehicles and automatically

adjusts reflectivity to reduce glare and

make night-driving safer.

Steering Responsive Headlights is also fitted

on the All-New Subaru XV which will allow the

headlight beam to move according to the direction

of how the car is steered, maximising dusk

visibility and safety. Additionally, Subaru Rear

View Detection is equipped for added safety

and convenience. The sensors placed around

the vehicle offers blind spot detection for safer

lane change and warns drivers on potential collision

danger while reversing into a street with

cross traffic.

*Specification data and model lineup may vary

according to markets. For more information,

please check with respective local Motor Image

personnel.

The 2.0-litre Boxer Engine has been revamped,

making the new engine approximately 12kg

lighter and equipped with Direct Injection to

Moom Talay & Trattoria

Pork & Wild Boar

At Trattoria Pizzeria Toscana Italian Restaurant and its neighbouring sister Thai

restaurant Moom Talay, (both located just in front of Soi 6 and 7 on Pattaya beach

road), you can find some fantastic delicacies on the menu including succulent pork

and wild boar.

Pork

It is important to dispel the prejudices that

persist about the nutritional value of pork.

Fresh pork meat is a great alternative to

beef, both from the nutritional point of view

and economically, however Italians continue

to prefer the latter.

These prejudices, no longer have any

reason to be in force. In fact, the pig industry

has diversified its activities into two

strands: pig production with more mature

pigs weighing 150-200 kg for the preparation

of hams, sausages and various

meat products and then the harvesting

of younger pigs around 6 months old and

weighing about 90kg to provide a very

tender fresh meat, palatable and with a fat

content comparable to that of beef.

These results, combined with the fact that

pork has a lower price than that of beef,

have lead to production being quadrupled

in the last twenty years.

Fresh pork has a pale pink color. The

color varies depending on the breed, feed,

age and, in the same animal, the different

muscle groups.

The boar and the sow for example, have

darker meat, while the piglet (typically 6-7

weeks fed exclusively on milk), presents

much clearer meat. The appearance of

pigmeat is velvety, with veined white or

slightly pinkish fat.

The chemical composition of pigmeat is

similar to that of other types of meat, both

as regards the content of protein and fat

and for calorie intake. The proteins have

an amino acid composition very similar

to that of beef and also have a high coefficient

of digestibility. The lipid fraction instead

differs from that of beef. In fact pork

contains a higher percentage of polyunsaturated

fatty acids such as linoleic and

linolenic acids, a very positive thing as it

is thought that these have a recognized

anticolesterolemica action.

Pork is a great source of B vitamins, especially

thiamine, which is estimated in

other meats at around 0.15 mg per hundred

grams, but reaches four times these

values in pork.

The cuts that are frequently intended for

consumption in the fresh state are: tender

loin, sirloin, loin, ribs, legs, head, and bacon.

Prime cuts are those characterized by lean

and very tender meat, and include Thread,

Lonza, Carré, and Leg and shoulder.

Thread, is a thin, elongated anatomical

portion that goes from the end of the

shoulder to the first rib. It’s thin, tender and

very tasty. It presents a rather dark color.

Lonza is located above the fillet at the

sides of the spine. It has elongated shape,

lighter color and lends itself to various

preparations and can be cooked stewed,

roasted or fried.

Carré is located in front of the animal and

is the continuation of the sirloin. When it

is boned and cooked whole, the roast is

called Arista.

Leg belongs to the hindquarter. Although

often used for hams, it has delicate meat.

It lends itself beautifully to the roasting spit.

Shoulder belongs to the prior quarter.

Although it is traditionally used to prepare

ham (cooked shoulder), it is also excellent

roasted or stewed.

Intermediate and lower cuts consist of

more or less infiltrated fat from meat and

include Ribs, Feet, Head, Pillow and Bacon.

Ribs are formed from the pork ribs with

connective tissue and muscle portions.

Not very rich in meat, however, they are

very tasty and are used in special dishes

like cassoeula.

BUSINESS SUPPLEMENT

Feet are the legs of the pig. They are

cooked with all the rind and therefore require

longer cooking times.

Head, also called the Musetto, is of course

the pig’s head. Although frequently used

for so-called “head cheese” or brawn (salami),

It can be cooked or boiled and stewed. Like

legs, it requires a long cooking time.

Pillow is a fatty part of the pig made from

the pig’s head. It is used in the preparation

of typical dishes such as amatriciana

sauce (Roman) or muset and brovade

(Friuli). In addition to the fresh state, it is

also sold preserved in salt. However,

Bacon is derived from the fatty part of the

pig’s belly. It has a more limited thickness

of fat and is richer in meat. Often, to help in

the preservation, it is lightly salted.

When buying pork, check with the butcher

if the meat was butchered fresh. If so, it is

good to store it in the refrigerator for a few

days (preferably wrapped in wax paper)

to allow for maturation to occur, which will

give the best tenderness and flavor.

You should also know how to choose the

cooking method appropriate for each type

of cut, to improve the palatability.

Grilling is very suitable for chops and

steaks, derived respectively from the yoke,

from the tenderloin and the loin. It is good

to carefully avoid the formation of burns,

or charred parts since the substances that

are formed at the high temperature can be

harmful.

Roasting can be conducted at high heat or

in the oven; in this case the meat is softer

and provides for a more homogeneous

cooking. The temperature reaches 180

degrees outside, but the time should be

extended.

The Wild Boar

The wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a wild suida

spread throughout the Mediterranean. Wild

boar meat is very tasty and now readily

available in large supermarkets especially

frozen. Wild boar meat is renowned and

appreciated as it combines the flavor of the

pork with game.

Wild Boar is a wild pig and is aggressive.

The size varies depending on the subspecies.

Its origins date back to a time before

the appearance of man. It is currently present

in Central Europe and South Asia and

Indonesia. In North America it was brought

by the Spaniards in the mid-sixteenth century.

In Africa and South America there are

animals like wild boar, such as warthog

and peccary.

Wild boar meat is rather fibrous and so is

particularly suitable for cooking in the pan,

such as stews or sauces. It may, however,

also be roasted or broiled.

Small wild boar is considered particularly

tasty by connoisseurs and is typically

roasted whole. The quality of the meat cuts

are the same as those of the pig. Favorite

cuts include wild boar thighs, but in some

areas also the head meat is considered a

delicacy.

Typical dishes are pappardelle with wild

boar sauce or wild boar Maremma, rather

hearty and typical of the Tuscan region.

Stew is prepared and served with polenta

or pasta. You can also find wild boar sauce

prepared commercially.

Wild boar ham is preferred because it easier

to find without preservatives or with

nitrate and antioxidant. At Moom Talay

and Trattoria Pizzeria Toscana the staff

cultivate it in the old fashioned, traditional

way to avoid any instances of chemicals.

Whilst preserved wild boar meat is common,

Moom Talay and Trattoria Pizzeria

Toscana mainly sell their products as fresh

as possible

In Europe and Asia since ancient times

hunting wild boar was considered a warrior

activity due to the dangerous nature of the

prey.

Their behavior, color and strength gave

them the nickname “black beast”, often associated

with the personification of evil.

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

people continued to appreciate the gastronomic

characteristics of this animal, but

in later times, the spread of agriculture

meant that the wild boar’s habitat

became limited and the animal

was considered a pest for

crops.

By the end of the year 800 wild boar was

confined to certain areas of Tuscany, Lazio

and Calabria, areas from which we have

received many traditional recipes.

Luca, the owner of Moom Talay and Trattoria

Pizzeria Toscana takes a lot of pride in

his offerings. Both wild boar and pigs are

raised at Luca’s specialist farm and this

enables the restaurants to provide a very

wide range of the freshest cold cuts and

tender pre cooked meats.

FOREIGN CURRENCY UPDATE

The US Dollar has continued to

exhibit weakness and has lost

some more ground in the last few

weeks with the DXY Dollar index,

(an index that measures the dollars

strength compared to a basket

of other currencies), moving

from 98 to a low of 96.5 before

recovering to 97.2. This has occurred

after a break below the key

100 level in the previous month.

Against the Thai baht, the US Dollar

also weakened from the 34.36

to 34.66 range to move to 33.92.

The rise in US interest rates did

little to deter sellers. With further

rate rises expected in the U.S., it

could be that the outlook is for a

steadier USD, however a trend

may be set in place already for

further weakening.

The British pound rose as high

as 1.3050 to the USD but took a

dive to 1.2640 after the results of

the UK general election that left

the Conservatives with a minority.

However this was quite a small

drop considering the magnitude

of the news and with some other

economic data coming to the

fore such as higher than expected

inflation numbers, the British

pound has clawed back some of

the losses to settle in the range of

1.2750 to 1.2820. Against the Thai

Baht, the drop was mirrored and

the British unit now fetches a just

43.34 compared to 44.6 before

the election. Expect the spread at

currency exchange booths to be

high due to continued volatility.

The USD/JPY cross topped out

at 114.38 to the U.S. Dollar and

dropped quite quickly back to

109.50 where it found support

and rallied once more towards

111.45 before dropping back to

110.89. It is now caught between

two opposite trends and so may

be in for a period of consolidation.

For those expecting a drop back

to 108 and below then the current

level looks enticing as a top. Yet

there are plenty of market participants

expecting a return to 114

and above. Much may depend on

the U.S. Dollar and also domestic

economic events in Japan. As for

a safe haven currency this still remains

in place and it may be that

any equity selloff will see a flight

to the Yen. Against the Thai baht

the yen remains in a tight range

between 0.313 and 0.3055.

The Russian ruble strengthened

against the US Dollar from 58 to

56.4 only to reverse all the gains

and trade back at 57.74. Against

the Thai Baht it has dropped from

0.605 to 0.5775. Volatility has increased

but the range has kept

mainly steady, simply the boundaries

have expanded on both

ends. World events have had little

impact on the Ruble, yet it would

be worth watching the oil price

as this may have an effect on the

currency in the near term.

The Euro has managed to keep its

gains after rising quite sharply after

the French elections. The 1.10

area remained as good support

with the Euro taking out 1.12. The

gains look set to continue based

on the current trend, however

they may become more muted

with less news in the fray. Against

the Thai baht the Euro remained

in a tight range from 38.0 to 38.4,

upslightly from 37.85 previously.

AP Honda Thailand sees a future for electric

motorbikes.

AP Honda Thailand (Thailand’s distributor of

Honda motorbikes), plans to manufacture

electric motorbikes by 2019, following the official

line of the Japanese based company.

AP Honda’s Vice-president, Suchart Arunsaengroj

was quoted as saying, “AP Honda

plans to make all related parts of the electric

motorcycles in Thailand with our commitment

to introduce the first model under the electric

platform in 2019.”

Yet the company faces an uphill struggle because

the parts for an electric motorbike cost

considerably more than the petrol equivalent

making the selling price higher. The company

is urging the Thai government to subsidize the

manufacture to make them less expensive in

the near term and to further attract investment

from foreign companies.

Suchart Arunsaengroj, was also quoted as

saying, “AP Honda plans to make all related

parts of the electric motorcycles in Thailand with

our commitment to introduce the first model under

the electric platform in 2019,” adding, “Making

eco-friendly vehicles is now the business

footprint for Honda because the global trend is

heading [in this direction].”

AP Thailand launches Italian styled Vittorio

condo.

AP Thailand launched its latest Italian inspired

condo project called Vittorio. The luxury abode

features an opulent lobby and other areas with

Italian Palissandro Bluette marble cladding.

Only 88 generously sized units are spread over

28 floors with a starting price of 35 million baht.

The release of the new condo comes at a time

when the property market has seen significantly

fewer new units being released in the first quarter

of 2017 as compared to the same period last

year.

The condo is situated in Sukhumvit Soi 39 and

is valued at 3.5 Billion baht.

The featured marble is very rare and only

around one third of it can be used due to imperfections

that were not accepted. It comes

imported directly from its home quarry in the

northern Italian city of Crevoladossola

Somkiat Jitsangboon, managing director of

Empire Granite Co Ltd, which procured the

marble for Vittorio, was quoted as saying,

“When we inspected marble slabs, water would

be sprayed on the stone so their veins and

swirls would reveal themselves more clearly.”

According to the head of corporate marketing

for AP, Sappasit Foongfaungchaveng, the

layout and concept of the Vittorio are based

on the architecture of the Uffizi Gallery museum

in Florence.

Section 44 invoked for the high speed

Thai-Chinese railway.

The Prime Minister has invoked Section 44 to

speed up the start of construction of the Thai

Chinese railway project that will run between

Bangkok and Nakhorn Ratchasima. Work is

expected to start as early as later this year.

The order specifies the requirement for the

SRT to engage with a Chinese state enterprise

certified by China’s National Development and

Reform Commission to oversee the construction

of the project.

It also specifies the requirement for a contract

to be drafted showing all the details of the

project’s cost and other conditions, as discussed

at several prior cabinet meetings.

The aim is to have the contract ready within

120 days, after which the cabinet would make

its considerations on the projects time frame.

Eventually the route would further connect

Bangkok with Nong Kai on the Laos border.

THAI LAW REQUIRES THAT YOU

MUST REPORT ANY FOREIGNERS

STAYING AT YOUR PROPERTY

It is a requirement of law that is

now being enforced at pretty much

all immigration offices across the

country that house owners must

report the presence of any foreigners

staying at the property at

the local immigration office within

24 hours of their arrival.

Technically, it is the householders

responsibility to declare the foreigners

residing at the property

and ignorance of this law will not

carry any weight with immigration

officials. If you have a rental

contract you can be classed as

the householder and can register

any foreigners residing at your

lies with the property

owner and they will be the one’s

who get fined if it is not done.

Some people think that filling in

an arrival card on the plane is

sufficient, however this is not the

case.

If you are staying at a hotel or

guesthouse, don’t worry this will

be taken care of for you. If you

are staying in a short or long

term rental property this will also

usually be taken care of for you,

however this should not be taken

for granted. It is always better to

check, if you are renting a property

via an agent you can check with

them and they will most likely have

a procedure already in place. But

if you are renting privately from a

landlord they may not be aware or

may not be happy about having

to do this as it has been known

for some private landlords not to

declare the rental income for tax

purposes. On a side note, this can

sometimes also be an issue if you

require rental receipts.

There is a choice of three documents

which can be provided by

the householder:

● A copy of the householders’

house registration document

or Tabian Baan

● A copy of the householders’

ID card

● A copy of a rental agreement

Please note that these rules also

apply if you have family or friends

visiting from overseas. These

rules have been applicable for a

number of years and work along

with the hotel act of 2005 but have

only begun to be enforced recently.

A fine of 2,000 THB is payable if

you do not register aliens residing

at your property within 24 hours of

their arrival.

The form required to notify foreigners

residing at the property

is form 30, officially you are

required to re-register if you leave

the country and return, however

many immigration offices do not

enforce this if you are returning to

the same address.
