REMOVE YOUR VINYL GRAPHICS
So it’s time to remove your vinyl graphics and you’ve
decided to do-it-yourself!
Removing vinyl can be a very time-consuming chore. Once
removed the graphics cannot be reinstalled. The longer the
graphics have been installed, the harder/longer the removal
process will normally be.
Some lower grade/older vinyls will unfortunately “shatter” into
little pieces/strips and there is really no way to avoid this. The steps
below will assist to reduce this occurrence, but may not stop it.
STEPS TO ASSIST IN THE REMOVAL OF VINYL GRAPHICS FROM
ANY SUBSTRATE: -
To assist with the removal of graphics, heating the graphics gently
with either a hair dryer (for small areas) or a heat gun is
recommended. This assists in softening the vinyl graphics and
adhesive. Always keep track of the distance between the heat gun
and the vinyl.
For small areas or individual lettering, after gently heating, it may
be possible to remove with a squeegee to peel the vinyl off.
For larger areas, patience is required to not “snap” the graphics off
but rather slowly pull the graphics off.
Removing vinyl is best if removed at a 90-degree angle to the
substrate, with slow consistent force. Reflective film is a thicker
vinyl and comes off easier, if removed close to the surface using a
180-degree angle.
Heat should always be used cautiously and particularly with double
paned windows to ensure the windows do not crack or heat
damaging the vehicle surface.
Cleaning any vinyl adhesive left behind on the surface can be
achieved using an adhesive remover (check suitability on vehicle
duco) or methylated spirits. When working with chemicals, always
wear the proper attire such as a mask and gloves and make sure
there is sufficient ventilation.
If you intend to apply new vinyl graphics, a final cleansing is
mandatory to be sure there is no adhesive left or chemicals that
will affect the adhesive of the new graphics.
