Finance By Ann Haldon
Using credit and debit cards abroad this year?
What you should know before you go
Spending money abroad
can be costlier than you think if
you’re not prepared for the fees
and ‘hidden’ charges. Whether you
choose to take a debit or credit card,
it pays to check the small print in
your terms and conditions before
you go.
You could save a considerable
amount in added interest and
charges, potentially including:
• An extra fee added to the
currency exchange rate, known
as a non-sterling transaction fee –
this can be as much as 3% of each
transaction.
• Fees for withdrawing cash from
ATMs abroad – although many
people are aware of this fee when
using a credit card, some banks
also charge a cash withdrawal fee
for debit cards.
• Credit card companies can charge
interest on cash withdrawn
abroad, even if the balance is
repaid in full at the end of the
month.
• Certain debit card providers
charge a fee for shopping with
their debit card abroad, so if there
is no alternative, it can be cheaper
to withdraw cash instead.
With that in mind, here are a few
tips on using credit and debit cards
abroad, so you can save money and
maximise your holiday spend.
Specialist credit and debit cards for
overseas use only
Rather than taking your ‘regular’
credit or debit card on holiday, look
for specialist cards designed to be
used abroad, as these are intended
to reduce the cost of holiday
spending. If you find one that’s
suitable and your application is
successful, however, just make sure
you pay off the balance in full every
month.
The interest rates on these cards are
extremely high if you don’t, which
could wipe out any savings you’ve
made. The best overseas credit
cards generally offer much better
exchange rates than local retailers.
So if you use a credit card and you’re
asked which currency you want pay
in, choose the local currency as it’s
likely to save you money – more on
Dynamic Currency Conversion below.
Credit cards for holiday spending
are generally easier to obtain than
debit cards
If your current bank doesn’t offer a
specialist debit card for use abroad,
you may have to switch your bank
account to obtain one. Alternatively,
you could just open a new account
with the provider, but this might
seem a little unnecessary when
there is an easier alternative in
credit cards.
Be careful when you apply for a
new card though - your credit file is
adversely affected when applications
are refused. The Money Saving
Expert website offers an ‘eligibility
calculator’ to give you an idea of
your chances of acceptance, and
help you narrow down the choices.
Credit cards offer consumer
protection
When you buy a product or
service between £100 and £30,000
using your credit card, you’re
automatically entitled to consumer
protection. Under Section 75
legislation, your credit card provider
accepts equal responsibility with the
retailer for the item(s) purchased,
making it easier to obtain a refund
if necessary – an important
consideration when you’ve bought
the item abroad.
Debit cards can be better if you’re
going to withdraw mainly cash
Although taking a dedicated credit
card for use abroad has many
benefits, if you intend to withdraw
mainly cash, a specialist debit card
will probably be cheaper overall as
there are usually no added charges
or fees for this.
Be careful about card ‘cloning’
When you use a card abroad, or
anywhere in fact, be aware of the
danger of cloning. This can happen
when the card is taken out of your
sight, or even when it’s right in front
of you if you aren’t taking notice.
8 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
When a card is cloned the person
taking payment swipes it through a
small device that looks like a pager
- because this device is so small, it
could be attached to a belt or placed
in their pocket.
It’s easy, therefore, to steal the
information on the card’s magnetic
strip. Your details are then
imprinted onto a brand new card,
or overwritten onto a card that’s
already been stolen.
Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)
Some retailers abroad will offer to
convert your purchase into sterling
when you pay by card, so you can
see exactly how much you’ve spent.
This process is called dynamic
currency conversion, or cardholder
preferred currency. The problem is
that you’ll probably lose out on the
exchange rate by paying this way.
Local retailers choose whether
or not to offer this service, and
in some cases may automatically
convert your purchase to sterling
without asking you. It’s a good idea,
therefore, to check whether DCC
has been used prior to signing a
payment slip or entering your PIN.
Avoiding the non-sterling
transaction fee
Although your bank uses the
MasterCard, Visa and Amex
optimum exchange rates, the charge
for conversion adds a non-sterling
transaction fee of up to 3% to your
bill when you use a non-specialist
card abroad.
Finding the best card may take a
little research, but your time and
effort will be repaid via the extra
holiday treats you’ll be able to enjoy.
It’s Not Always
Good To Be
Green
Water is great in a garden and
whether you have a large pond, a
formal pool, a miniature pond in
a half barrel or a self-contained
fountain or other water feature, the
chances are that from time to time
you will have been frustrated by
the fact that the water turns green:
the so-called ‘pea-soup’ effect!
Generally, this will be due to one
of many different types of algae
infestation, and this problem tends
to get much worse during warmer
weather. Sometimes it completely
ruins the appearance of the water
feature and on other occasions it
is just a passing phase, but what
should you do about it?
Blanket weed is so called because
the long filaments of algae tangle
up together, making a mass that
resembles a dense green blanket.
The easiest way to remove this
once it has taken hold is to simply
pull or rake it out. Over large areas
a rake is worthwhile, providing you
can avoid bringing the pond plants
with it. Alternatively, use a stick or
bamboo cane that you twirl into the
mass of algae (rather as you would
load spaghetti onto a fork) and then
compost it down in your compost
bin.
Surface floating pond weeds such
as duckweed, which looks like lots
of very tiny oval leaves floating on
the water’s surface, can be a real
nightmare too. Sometimes it is
impossible to work out how it got
there, but I think it is often brought
in on new plants or simply on the
feet of birds or other creatures as
they come to the pond to drink. It
builds up very rapidly, soon forming
a bright green layer on the surface
and the best control for this is to
regularly scrape the weed off using
a good-sized kitchen sieve. Again
it can be composted, but do make
sure that you remove every scrap
of it from your pond or it will soon
be back.
Where possible, try to avoid the
build-up of algae by creating
your pond carefully and taking
precautions with what you grow
and keep in it. Avoid making a new
pond in a very sunny position, as
lots of sunlight increases the algal
growth and makes the problem
worse. Bear in mind, however, that
a pond situated too close to a large
tree will soon become clogged by
leaves over the autumn months!
You should also make sure that the
pond is as deep as possible: shallow
water is much more inclined to
develop algal problems than a pond
which has deeper water. If you want
fish that’s fine, but avoid putting too
many fish in a pond as their excreta
raises the nitrogen level in the water
and this encourages algae. It really
helps if you grow plenty of surface
floating plants – water lilies are a
wonderful solution, as they help to
shade the water’s surface and so are
particularly useful if the pond is in a
fairly sunny site.
I’d also suggest that with a new or
existing pond, you go down to your
local garden centre or pond plant
supplier and ask for a selection of
oxygenating plants. Some of these
float in bundles in the water, others
can be grown in containers, and all
of them help to raise the level of
oxygen in the pond and so decrease
the problem with algae.
Installing something which moves
the water around, such as a spout
or fountain, will help to reduce the
amount of algae because it also
oxygenates the water, but do bear
in mind that water lilies do not like
by Pippa Greenwood
water that is in motion.
It is important not to give up on
a pond too quickly – if you keep
changing the water in an attempt
to keep it clear, the pond never
gets the chances to create its own
natural balance and the situation
will not get better. Try to be patient
and usually, provided you try all the
above, the pond will eventually sort
itself out and you can enjoy seeing
clear water again.
You can consider using various
proprietary physical and chemical
controls for algae, but always make
sure that the one you have chosen
is suitable for your size and type of
pond and that it can be used safely
where wildlife or your pond fish are
living.
The much-loved method of using
barley straw to clear algae in ponds
does work, but it is essential that
you have straw taken from barley
and no other cereal crop. If you
can get hold of this, cram some
of it into something like an old
pair of tights and submerge in the
water by weighing them down with
several bricks. Alternatively, you
can buy pads of barley straw, in
some instances mixed with lavender
stalks, and these will help to do the
job for you.
Good evening.
This is the BBC Light Programme. It's now 6.45
and time for the next thrilling episode of
‘Dick Barton - Special Agent!’
When Dick Barton, ‘Boy’s Own’ adventurer,
all-English hero and teatime wireless star is asked
by MI5 to track down a missing wealthy socialite,
little does he realise the devilish web of intrigue
he’s about to become entangled in. Before you can
say ‘I say, that’s not cricket!’, Barton and his two
sidekicks Jock and Snowy find themselves caught
up in a fiendish foreign plot against the British
Empire that takes them from darkest Africa to
even darker Penge, involving gormless goons,
femme fatales and Spam TM !
And
This affectionate spoof of the classic radio show is
an all-new, fun-filled comedy-thriller, chock-full of
songs, surprises and stiff upper lip!
Audience seating is strictly on a first come, first served
basis and on grass, so come early and bring a blanket or
your own chair to sit on if you want a comfy seat and a
good view. But please don’t bring high-backed chairs –
they’ll stop the people behind you seeing the
show! And remember, it can get cold at the end of the
evening, even in the middle of summer
(it is England after all), so please bring warm clothing,
rugs, and so on - just in case.
A barbecue and outdoor bar will be available from
7.00pm on performance nights.
Please note: This production includes a number of
double entendres and rather racy gags which
some parents might consider unsuitable for
younger children. We think they'd
probably go over the head of most little'uns -
but you have been warned!
This is Barry the Lurcher who was collected by Furry
Friends Animal Rescue (UK) on 14th July 2017.
Barry had been abandoned in a phone box in Coulsdon,
Surrey and was found by a local ladies daughter (well
spotted!). She was directed to us when local services
could not help.
Barry went straight to the emergency vets and was given
strong pain relief and diagnosed with a badly broken
shoulder caused by blunt force trauma (probable car
accident).
He had old healing injuries where he would have scraped
along the road and the vet said that he had probably been
left for 1 - 2 weeks without seeing a vet and when he
finally collapsed, they dumped him.
The following day Barry travelled to the vet for a potential
emergency amputation, but after 24 hours on a drip, he
surprised us all by hobbling about.
Xrays were sent to an osteo specialist who confirmed that
VERY luckily for Barry, he would heal naturally given time
and tlc.
Bleeding to the lungs was also picked up which will also
heal over time, but was causing slightly laboured breathing.
Barry was castrated whilst he was under anaesthetic
as we did not want to put him under again any time soon.
Barry is being kindly
fostered by a lady
who has adopted a
lurcher from us in the
past and will stay
there until he is well.
We are not planning
any potential new
homes just yet as he
has a long road for
recovery to go.
Barry highlights how
important getting
medical attention for
your pets is. Serious
incidents such as car
accidents cause
serious internal
damage. It is vital that your pet sees the vet or that you
seek help.
There are vets locally who do help with low cost vet
treatment for those on benefits.
Owning a pet is an expensive commitment. They are
completely reliant on you for their wellbeing.
Technology
The best way to get wireless Wi-Fi at home or on the go
If you go out and about this year, you’re in for a
happy surprise: You don’t need to be travelling far
from home to get free Wi-Fi. Many UK and Irish
towns and cities have free Wi-Fi schemes - and
most casual eating and coffee chains usually offer
some form of free internet access. Just watch
what you’re signing up for: such public-spirited
provision is often there in order to capture
valuable marketing data, so keep a close eye on
any tick-boxes you’re expected to complete. It’s
also a good idea to use a virtual private networking
(VPN) service such as Tunnelbear (www.
tunnelbear.com) or Windscribe
(www.windscribe.com) to keep
your connection private if you
intend to use public Wi-Fi services.
You never know who’s looking in.
1
A WORLD WITHOUT WIRES
If you’re staying at home
and just want to get better
reception around the house
or in the garden, there are
several ways to make your
Wi-Fi work harder. The
first, cheapest
and simplest
thing to do
to improve
your Wi-Fi
connection is to
move the router: ideally it should be higher than
your furniture and obstacles such as radiators,
which are hard for the radio waves to pass
through.
If your wireless
router is getting on a
bit it’s probably stuck
with older, slow Wi-Fi
technology, so if you can
stretch to an 802.11ac
wireless
router you’ll
3
notice a huge
difference in
speed and range - provided of course
your laptop, tablet or smartphone has
the same Wi-Fi support.
If the speed is fine but the signal just doesn’t go
far enough, a Wi-Fi extender may be just the trick:
it connects to the network and throws the signal
further, so for example you might extend your
home Wi-Fi network to the garden or patio. It isn’t
expensive or difficult, either: good Wi-Fi extenders
are available for less than £40 and take seconds to
set up.
Jet Lag and Joy Lag: How to Recover from Your Holiday
We look forward to holidays as a
chance to relax and revitalise
ourselves. So why do we sometimes
feel exhausted and
miserable when we return – and
how can we stop it happening?
JET LAG
What exactly is jet lag?
Jet lag is a term for symptoms
caused by travel to a different timezone,
which can disrupt your ‘body
clock’ - your natural,
circadian rhythm. This influences
your sleep, eating and toileting
patterns as well as digestion,
temperature and blood pressure.
Jet lag symptoms include changed
bowel habits, tiredness, headache,
anxiety, confusion and nausea.
Their severity usually increases
with age but primarily depends on
how many time zones you cross.
One or two? No problem. Three to
six? You’ll feel the effects. Seven to
twelve? You may need a few days
to fully adapt, particularly when
travelling east; ‘west is best, east
is a beast’, probably because it’s
easier to adapt to a longer day and
delay sleep than make yourself
sleep after a shorter day.
Reducing Jet Lag
Jet lag can be inconvenient at the
start of your holiday, but it’s not
usually a problem because you’re
on holiday. When you return,
though, you may not have long to
adapt before you’re back at work
and in your usual routine.
While you can’t prevent jet lag,
there are ways to help reduce its
effects.
• If possible, start gradually
changing your routine several
days before departure so that
it’s closer to that of the new time
zone.
•Ensure you’re well-rested and
hydrated before and during your
flight.
• Nap on the plane if night time will
be a long time away when you
arrive (or if it will be dawn). If you
want to stay awake, keep active
(this is recommended for long
flights anyway, to reduce the risk
of Deep Vein Thrombosis).
• Avoid alcohol, which will
dehydrate you and may increase
jet lag symptoms. Remember that
caffeinated drinks (e.g. tea, coffee
and cola) may keep you awake.
• When you arrive, adjust your day
to the new time immediately
rather than working up to it
gradually. If you can, resist
napping on arrival unless it’s
night time.
• While the NHS recommends
going outside soon after arrival if
it’s daylight, Dr Idzikowski,
director of Edinburgh Sleep
Centre, recommends using the
calculator he created to tell you
when to seek out or avoid daylight
to reset your bodyclock, at
www.ba.com/jetlag.
Of course, you could always break
your trip with a stopover or only
holiday in countries with similar
time zones: Western Europe,
Greenland, Ghana – or parts of
Antarctica.
JOY LAG (POST-HOLIDAY BLUES
AND EXHAUSTION)
It’s not uncommon to get back
from your holiday and feel glum
and exhausted. The weather is
often more miserable at home and
there’s no holiday to look forward
to anymore.
The thought of returning to your
work and responsibilities (particularly
if you’re not happy with them)
can be daunting – as can that huge
pile of holiday laundry. If you left
in a rush and have been away for a
while, your house may look untidy
and dusty, making it hard to relax.
Perhaps you overdid it on holiday,
too, packing in too many activities
48 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
and trips, not getting enough sleep
and overindulging in alcohol and
unhealthy foods.
Reducing Joy Lag
These tips can’t make your
overjoyed to return from holiday
– they’re not magic! But they will
help to reduce your joy lag.
Before your holiday, try to pack
gradually. For instance, if there’s
only a week before your holiday
and you have more than a week’s
worth of socks and underwear,
grab a suitcase and pack those
spares now. Avoiding last minute
panics, such as turning the house
upside down for passports and
sunglasses, should prevent you
coming back to a mess. If you can
afford it, book a treat to look
forward to a few weeks post-holiday.
Ensure you have easy meals in
stock for your return and if you can,
book a day or two off after your
holiday to adjust.
During your holiday, ensure you
don’t cram every moment with
trips or organised activities.
Everyone needs time to chill.
Shortlist trips, check the weather
forecast and any special events and
then plan the best days to venture
elsewhere. Reserve the other days
for relaxation, games or a gentle
walk to a local park, beach or
restaurant. If you can, try to make
the journey home as fun and
relaxing as possible. Perhaps you
could break your journey at a
restaurant, or even a hotel – doing
the final run home on a full holiday
breakfast.
After your holiday, be kind to
yourself. Cook easy meals or, if you
can afford it, treat yourself to a
meal out or a takeaway.
Conversely, though, head for the
washing machine as soon as you’re
in the door and put a load in to
wash. It will only take a minute or
two and you’ll know you’ve made a
start. Put suitcases out of sight until
they’re empty.
Here’s wishing you reduced jet
lag, reduced joy lag and Happy
Holidays!

Career Advice from Experts : Part Three
Writing the perfect Cover Letter
On average, employers spend 30 seconds
looking at covering letters so you need to entice
the employer to want to know more about you,
to want to read your CV and to invite you for
interview.
Below shows a suggestion of how to organise
your cover letter and what to include:
Opening Paragraph
Make it short, concise and state why you are
writing. If someone has put you forward for this
position, detail it here. Introduce yourself briefly
to show that your application is relevant to
the job vacancy. i.e. I have just graduated from
Portsmouth University with a 2:1 in Mechanical
Engineering and wish to apply for the Project
Engineer position advertised in LocalJobFrog.
co.uk
Paragraphs 2-3
Why should the employer choose you? Without
duplicating your CV, outline briefly the skill
set that you bring to the role, your academic
qualifications and your experience to date that
matches the job requirements. Ensure you
cross-reference the skills required (detailed
in the job advert) with the skills you possess.
Personalise the application by suggesting how
the company will benefit from having you as a
member of their team.
Food, Health And Hygiene
For Your New Hamster
Hamsters are very sensitive
creatures, so when you bring
home your new pet, it’s a good
idea to leave them to settle in
for a few days. They need to
feel safe and secure, and not
disturbing them too much will
also help them become familiar
with their new surroundings.
Along with maintaining hygienic
living conditions, diet plays
an important part in your
hamster’s day-to-day health, so
what should you feed them?
Best foods for your hamster
Quality ready-mixed hamster
food or pellets are available
in good pet stores and
supermarkets, and are a simple
way to ensure your hamster
receives the nutrients it needs.
If you know the type of food
they were given previously, it’s
a good idea to carry on with
the same regime to prevent
upsetting their digestive
system.
Hamsters also enjoy fresh fruit
and vegetables, but fruit
should be given in
tiny quantities as
too much sugar can
cause diabetes.
A small piece of
carrot, apple, or
cucumber once or
Closing paragraph
Finish your cover letter with a request for action,
requesting an interview with the employer e.g.
‘I welcome the opportunity to discuss my
experience in more detail.’ If you know the
addressee, you can end the letter with ‘Yours
sincerely’ or use ‘Yours faithfully’ if you don’t.
Don’t forget to include an enclosures line at the
bottom if you have enclosed anything with the
letter, such as your CV.
Health and hygiene
Your hamster’s cage should
be cleaned thoroughly once a
week with a safe disinfectant
- more often in the area used
as a toilet if they don’t have a
litter tray. Hamster litter trays
are very useful, particularly for
smaller cages, and help your
pet to stay clean. If you put a
little of the old, dry bedding
back in the cage, they’ll also be
surrounded by their own scent,
feeling safer as a result.
What a wonderful world
We have been enjoying some brilliant weather
and it gives us opportunity to enjoy the wealth of
countryside around and about us. When visiting
friends closer to London I am always struck with
how claustrophobic is feels – and, comparatively,
how open it is in Coulsdon.
It’s the joy of being the ‘last outpost’ of Greater
London in the south; that we are bordering the
green and leafy Surrey countryside. Whether
it is a stroll through Banstead Woods and the
surrounding fields; or perhaps Farthing Downs
opening out onto Happy Valley:
We have many places to enjoy within a stone’s
throw of the centre.
I often have to remind myself to go and enjoy
it – as it is all too easy to end up with tunnel
vision – commuting between work and home,
occasionally scurrying out on a scavenging mission
for food!
When I look at the beauty of the natural world I
find my mind elevated. Above the hum-drum of
the day-to-day, lifted and refreshed. I find space
to breathe (both literally and metaphorically)
and take stock of life.
It is like a detox for my soul in many ways.
Perhaps you find something similar.
CR5 CODEWORD
Each letter in this puzzle is
represented by a different
number between 1 and 26.
The codes for three letters are
these throughout the grid you
can start guessing words and
reveal other letters. As you find
the letters enter them in the box
Why can the wonder of the created order
have such a profound effect on me I wonder? I
believe this is because I am experiencing what
in theological circles is called the General Grace
of God. God is the creator and sustainer of all
things (quite the mechanism for creation is of
less concern to me) and those things that we see
as beautiful have been provided for our benefit
in kindness by our loving God. They are available
to all and designed to point us in God’s direction
– that we might wonder; be awestruck, amazed.
Why would God choose to do this? Why not
create a world of cold beauty-less efficiency?
Partly because God is good – but also because
He wants us to respond to Him – to find Him and
to know and love Him.
Have a blessed month.
Treasurer Andrew Carver proposed the Society’s
July debate, ‘Prisoners and the unemployed
should undertake useful community
employment.’ He started by reminding the floor
that community sentences are an alternative
to custodial ones for crimes such as damaging
property, minor theft, assault, benefit fraud.
Prisoners given a community sentence must
complete specified work – e.g., litter clearance,
graffiti removal, redecorating public buildings
– as ‘community payback’, acknowledging their
debt to society and connecting offenders with
victims. A range of one-to-one or group training
programmes focus on anger management,
substance and alcohol abuse, domestic violence
and sex offences. Community work is unpaid
and is not an easy option, involving between 40
and 300 hours, with embargos on certain social
activities, a curfew, an electronic tag and other
restrictions.
How does community payback benefit society?
In London, over 1 million hours are completed
every year at a cost of £2,800 per person per
year; our high prison population costs £36,250
per person per annum.
Moreover, a 36% reoffence rate with
community sentencing compares very well
with a 60% reconviction rate within 12 months,
for custodial convictions. Nearly half (47%) of
prisoners have no qualifications and 42% have
been expelled from school. Of the 68% who were
unemployed before conviction, 65% are
reconvicted within 1 year of release.
Andrew outlined the highly successful, local
“Clink’ project, where prisoners receive
comprehensive training in the catering and
horticultural industries, allowing them access to
viable employment on release. Andrew then
discussed the unemployed. He said that 18 - 21
year olds who have not found a job nor training
placement in the past 6 months should not
receive job seekers’ allowance, unless they
agree to start an apprenticeship or community
work; community work should consist of at
least 30 hours per week, rewarded with a youth
allowance, (from Day 1 of their benefits’ claim)
and 10 hours’ job searching per week. In an aim
to reduce welfare dependency and benefit fraud,
the Government is planning to make community
work compulsory for the long-term unemployed,
freezing the allowance for non-compliance.
Andrew said that the unemployed should give
something back to the taxpaying public, by
undertaking important community work. They
should help themselves by experiencing the
workplace again, and thus becoming a more
attractive proposition for potential employers.
Opposer Richard Mascall opened with the
memoirs of former Chief Inspector of Prisons,
David Ramsbotham. He quoted the case of
‘John’, a 27-year old ‘revolving door’ offender,
with serious family, mental health and
educational problems. It is difficult to help the
many prisoners like John to stay out of prison.
But the 56% of prisoners who do not re-offend
have three important advantages: a home,
stable relationships, and a job. So why did
Michael Howard close the last hostels attached
to inner-city prisons, when many newly-released
prisoners have nowhere to go? What about
jobs? Companies like Accenture and Ricoh have
signed up to a ‘Ban the Box’ scheme, which
removes the ‘previous conviction’ tick box on
job application forms. However, how does
prison equip inmates for work? Prison inspectors
reported that work experience for prisoners
(e.g., sweeping floors) is ‘mundane, repetitive
and unrelated to resettlement objectives’. The
best alternatives are Resettlement Prisons and
Release on Temporary Licence (RoTL), offering
prisoners outside employment before release;
although 99.92% of RoTLs were successful, just
1 in 4 Resettlement Prisons offered useful RoTLs.
Poor funding means that, of more than 5,000
prisoners released every year, only 335 have
RoTL experience and nearly one third of adult
male prisons had inadequate training facilities.
Richard then discussed the employment of the
unemployed. Both the Mandatory Work Activity
and the Work Programme and Community
Work Placements cost money and did not work.
With an unemployment rate of under 5% (1.5
million, with 0.9 million simply between jobs),
do we need costly and ineffective support? Only
368,000 people claim Job Seekers’ Allowance for
more than 12 months; why give them unskilled
labour instead of training and education?
Forcing people to work would cost money for
supervision and administration. The type of work
offered would be that undertaken by minimum
wage earners, who would then lose their jobs.
Unscrupulous employers would benefit from a
cheap workforce. Richard concluded that paid
work for prisoners is useful, but we need to
spend more on RoTLs and training, rather than
‘community work’ of doubtful value. In 2014/15,
welfare spending was £2388 million, with
unemployment benefit about 1% of that.
Scrapping unemployment benefit would save
just 32p for every £1,000 of tax. Making the
unemployed work is costly and of little value to
them or to society.
The motion was won by 9 votes to 1, although
some members, agreeing with the principle of
the debate, favoured the opposer’s doubt about
the practicalities of it.
The Society’s topical debate will take place at the
Old Coulsdon Centre on September, at 8 p.m.;
subject and speakers will be decided on during
our August recess.
High Days and…
…Holidays. August has arrived. The radio and
no doubt multiple streaming sites are pumping
out playlists with suitably appropriate songs in
celebration. (Actually, there are at least 29
different songs called simply ‘Holiday’, from
Madonna, Green Day and the Bee Gees to Dizzee
Rascal, Happy Mondays and Vampire Weekend.)
The schools are out and strangely for these
usually rain-lashed shores, we’ve enjoyed for
quite some while now an outbreak of sunshine
and high temperatures that even recall, for
some, the heatwave of 1976. What does this time
mean to you? If you have no children yourself, or
they’ve grown up and actually moved out (more
of a rarity these days), then the traffic may be
a little less during the rush hour but otherwise
it’s probably not a lot of change. For those with
children, especially the younger ones, it can be a
challenge to keep them entertained or get them
to entertain themselves. But for six weeks from
mid-July to early September, every day will be a
holiday for someone.
This is a modern phenomenon. The word
‘Holiday’ is a corruption of the two words ‘Holy
Day’. And many years ago, when we were
literally a God-fearing nation labouring under
the yoke of feudalism, it would take the power
of the Church to bring a halt to the usually
back-breaking toil forced upon us by our Lords
and masters. And freemen, working in either
town or country to support themselves and and/
or their family could hardly spare the time to
down tools.
It wasn’t until the industrial revolution in the
18th Century, when vast numbers of people
(including women, children, rural workers and
immigrants) were drawn into the mills and
factories, that the power of those people began
to be harnessed and not simply to make the
wheels of industry turn faster. Finally, gathered
together and with a united cause, workers
began to organise themselves. This wasn’t
welcomed by the mill, pit and factory owners,
who often regarded their workforce as little
more than animals. Denied the seasonal breaks
afforded them when they worked the land, a
common practice began to develop, where the
Monday after payday was ‘skipped’, sometimes
the Tuesday too. So widespread was this that
any attempt to penalise the offenders became
pointless. So rather than challenge it, and under
pressure from outlawed but still influential
trade unions, industry finally regulated it. In 1871
Parliament passed the Bank Holidays Act, giving
England, Ireland and Wales four Bank Holidays -
Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the first Monday
in August and Boxing Day, to add to the existing
holidays of Good Friday and Christmas Day.
However, as we left the Victorian era, little
changed. Only senior managers and factory
supervisors were allowed paid leave in addition
to Bank Holidays. In 1911 a now legal Trade Union
Congress started to campaign for paid holidays,
but there was significant resistance from both
industry and the government. By 1936, the ILO
(International Labour Organisation, a multinational
group formed in the aftermath of World
War I that is now part of the United Nations,
and which the UK was a part of) put forward
the proposal that all workers should be entitled
to paid leave of at least six days once they had
been employed for a year. The UK refused
to implement it. Eventually, and again under
pressure, the Holidays with Pay Act was passed
in 1938 which gave a limited number of workers
the right to five days paid holiday, but this fell
far short of the two weeks for all that the unions
had been championing.
And this remained the stance from the UK
government throughout the rest of the 20th
Century. Despite pressure from the ILO, the
United Nations and latterly the European Union,
the powers that be at Westminster
fundamentally opposed enshrining the rights of
workers to paid holidays in law. In the 1970’s the
recommendation from the various international
groups was to move to three weeks holiday,
and that increased to four weeks by the 1980’s.
Britain did nothing. It preferred to let holidays
be sorted by the various industries in collective
bargaining with its employees which of course
led to significant disparities in holiday
entitlements. In 1993 the EU Working Time
Directive stipulated that 4 weeks holiday be the
standard holiday entitlement. The UK abstained
and didn’t implement the ruling, and it was only
five years later that finally Tony Blair’s Labour
government put it into practice.
So now we have four weeks statutory holiday
and 8 Bank Holidays. Except for the selfemployed,
the police, and the armed forces.
Oh, and all the zero hour contractors out there.
But what a fight it’s been to get here. Fought
almost every step of the way by the people we
elect to look after our interests. Is it any wonder
that with all the EU laws about to be repealed
and turned into UK ones, some people are
worried that it’s not our interests that will be
looked out for? Happy holidays everyone, but
don’t take them for granted…
The duvet twitches, followed
by footsteps on the bedroom
floor and the creaking of a door:
it’s four o’clock in the morning
and your partner is on the move
for the second time that night.
Thanks to this interruption,
you’re now wide awake, and as
you lie there in the darkness,
you wonder how to broach the
subject of sleeping in separate
beds...
Most of us have experienced
the irritation of being woken
at night by a partner who is
answering a call of nature,
snoring loudly or thrashing
around in a violent dream. If it’s
a one-off event, the chances are
you will simply roll over and go
back to sleep, but if your sleep
is disrupted on a regular basis,
then you may feel compelled to
take action.
Most individuals need around
eight hours’ sleep a night to
function well, but this can vary
from person to person. As a
general rule, if you wake up
feeling tired and have to catch
up with a nap during the day,
you’re probably not getting
enough sleep. In the short
term the symptoms of sleep
deprivation can include memory
loss, difficulty in concentrating
and mood changes, but in the
longer term lack of sleep can
result in serious conditions such
as obesity, heart disease and
diabetes. In a recent survey,
the Sleep Council found that
women are far more likely to
be disturbed by their partners
than men, with 31% percent of
female sleepers reporting sleep
disruption, as opposed to 19% of
males.
While the health argument
alone is enough to justify a
conversation about separate
Can Sleeping Apart Bring
You Closer Together?
beds, it’s a difficult topic to
discuss face-to-face. If you’ve
shared a bed for twenty or thirty
years, it can feel like a betrayal
to suggest you should sleep
apart, which is why many light
sleepers choose to put up with
night-time disturbances rather
than upset their partner.
But if you’ve reached the end
of your tether and are seriously
considering the option of
sleeping apart, there’s no need
to feel alone. According to a
2015 survey by the National
Sleep Foundation, almost one in
four of us now sleep in separate
beds or bedrooms, and in a
recent poll by silversurfers.com,
84% of respondents aged 50+
said they believed sharing a bed
wasn’t essential for a happy
relationship.
After all, the Queen and Price
Philip famously sleep apart. In a
biography by Sally Bedell Smith,
published in 2012, the Queen’s
cousin Lady Pamela Hicks is
quoted as saying: “In England,
the upper class always have
had separate bedrooms. You
don’t want to be bothered with
snoring or someone flinging
a leg around. Then, when you
are feeling cosy, you share your
room sometimes. It is lovely to
be able to choose.”
So what are the options if you
do decide to sleep separately?
When the time came to replace
an old double bed, Max and
Celia Stoddart from Hampshire
took the decision to replace
it with twin beds. Celia says:
“The idea came to us when we
booked a week in a hotel. We’d
reserved a room with a double
bed but all they could offer us
was a twin room. When we got
home at the end of the week,
we both agreed that we’d slept
by Kate McLelland
78 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
better than we had done in
years. It made sense to buy twin
beds, as that means we can both
be in the same room without
cramping each other’s space.”
Vihann Khan’s sleep apnoea
meant his snoring kept wife
Nazneen awake at night. While
he was receiving treatment,
Nazneen regularly escaped
to a spare bed set up in their
guest room. Although Vihann’s
condition has now improved,
Nazneen still uses the spare bed
from time to time. She says: “At
times when I can’t sleep, it helps
to know I have somewhere to
escape, where I won’t disturb
Vihann if I’m restless. We always
start out the night together, but
he knows there’s a chance he’ll
wake up alone in the morning.”
Jill and Maurice McGiver from
Renfrewshire were unhappy
about the idea of sleeping apart,
but both agreed that they would
sleep better if they had more
space. For them, investing in a
kingsize bed was the solution.
“We have an average-size
bedroom and the bed now takes
up most of the available space,”
says Maurice, “but it has been
worth the sacrifice to get a good
night’s sleep. If you live in a
small flat or a cottage, a kingsize
bed may not work for you, but
for us it’s been a lifesaver.”
Although these couples have
found different solutions to
their sleeping problems, all
three agree that the changes
they have made have not
only improved their health
and wellbeing, but have also
enhanced their relationships. So
perhaps the idea that sleeping
apart can bring you together
isn’t so far-fetched after all!

Cake and
Bake
White Chocolate
Filo Tarts
Crisp and light pastry cases filled with a rich
and creamy white chocolate mousse – these
tarts are easy to make but look impressive.
Double up the quantities if serving a crowd.
Ingredients:
• 25g unsalted butter, melted
• 6-8 sheets filo pastry
• 100g good quality white
chocolate
• 2 tbsp milk
• 150ml double cream
• Dark chocolate curls and
cocoa, to decorate
Makes 6
Ready in 45 minutes, plus
cooling and chilling
TIP
You can make the pastry cases
a few hours in advance but only
fill just before serving otherwise
the pastry will go soggy.
1. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, Gas Mark 5. Use
a little of the melted butter to grease 6 holes of a 12-
hole bun tray.
2. Use a sharp knife to cut the pastry into 18cm x 10cm
squares. Brush each square lightly with some of the
remaining melted butter.
3. Line each buttered hole with three of the squares,
arranging each one at an angle so the corners form a
star. Press gently into the holes.
4. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes until the
pastry is crisp and golden brown. Leave to cool in the
tray.
5. To make the white chocolate filling, break the
chocolate into pieces and place in a heatproof bowl
with the milk. Set the bowl over a pan of simmering
water. Leave until the chocolate has melted then
remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Cool for
10 minutes.
6. Pour the cream into a bowl and whip the cream until
softly peaking. Gently fold in the cooled chocolate
mixture and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
7. Gently spoon the chocolate cream between the filo
pastry cases. Decorate with the dark chocolate curls
and a dusting of cocoa powder. Serve within 1 hour
of filling.
Motoring By
James Baggott
Paddleboarding in a Picanto
To prove just how practical
its new city car can be, Kia
challenged James Baggott to
tackle the Italian coast on a
paddleboard.
It’s all too easy to pigeonhole
cars like the Kia Picanto as city
centre shopping carts, fit for
nothing more than a quick trip
to the supermarket.
While it might be true that
the Korean car firm’s baby has
traditionally been bought by
grandparents and students,
it’s an image the brand is
desperately hoping it can shed.
This is the third generation
of Kia’s second bestselling UK
car and with it comes more
aggressive looks, a sharper
driving style and clever
technology aimed at helping
it appeal to a far broader
spectrum of buyers.
Kia believes it can convince
customers that while it might
still be an easy and fun to
drive little car, the new Picanto
can still cope with the bigger
adventures city dwellers might
hanker for too. That’s why I
find myself squeezed into a
wet suit, dripping with sea
water after a paddle-boarding
adventure on the Italian
coastline.
To prove just how versatile
its new Picanto can be, Kia
has invited us to the Toscana
coastline, crammed two blowup
paddleboards, wet suits
and a picnic in the back of one
of their latest city cars and
pointed us towards the coast.
Costing from just £9,450, the
Picanto now boasts more
passenger and luggage space
but with no overall increase
in size over the previous
model. The Koreans have
managed that by increasing the
wheelbase while at the same
time reducing overhangs. That
means inside there’s a 25 per
cent increase in luggage space,
topping 255 litres with the rear
seats up and 1,010 litres with
them down.
That extra carrying capacity
certainly comes in handy. The
two giant paddleboards are
easily swallowed in the boot,
while overnight bags for two
and accessories find a home
too. In fact, it’s surprising just
how much space there is left
over.
There’s a choice of engines
in the new model. Our test
vehicle – in ‘2’ specification
– features the 1.0 litre 66bhp
unit. But there’s also a 1.25
litre 83bhp option and a 1.0
litre turbocharged option. As
fun as the latter sounds, even
the lowest output unit hauls
the city car along at a perfectly
adequate rate (despite the
addition of a lot of luggage)
hitting 60mph in 13.8 seconds
and a top speed of 100mph.
What’s more it’ll do that
while sipping fuel at a miserly
64.2mpg rate on the combined
cycle.
Crossing the rich, lush
green vine-covered Italian
countryside near Grosseto as
we attempt to find the beach,
the Picanto’s light steering
and peppy engine impresses,
as does its ability to soak up
potholes you’d fear would
otherwise swallow it.
As we approach the beach, the
asphalt crumbles away and
80 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!

the Picanto skips between
giant holes littering the sandcovered
track to the water.
The beach at Grosseto is being
battered by strong winds,
whipping up a swell that’s
enthralling kite surfers, but
not particularly pleasing for
paddleboarders. Thankfully a
sheltered tributary that runs
deep into the countryside
offers far more tempting
sheltered waters.
After an hour on the lightly
rippled river, we decide to
embark on some impromptu
surfing in the ravaging waves
lashing the beach. Despite the
clouds, it’s surprisingly warm
beneath the white-capped
surf as we fall time after time
beneath the waves.
While drying off in the
supportive front seats of the
Kia, there’s time to play with
the kit. It’s functional not
flashy inside, and despite
the smaller screen for the
multimedia system on this
mid-range ‘2’, it still works well
with your phone, streaming
Spotify perfectly.
There’s air conditioning,
electric front and rear
windows, heated door mirrors
and a leather trimmed steering
wheel to enjoy and that’s on
top of the options standard
across the range, which
include remote central locking,
USB and AUX ports, electronic
stability control and automatic
emergency braking.
The latter was well
demonstrated on our return
trip, triggering when a sheep
strayed into the middle of the
road. The system automatically
brakes for drivers to a
complete stop when it senses
a crash – in this case assisting
to the point where the sheep
narrowly avoided becoming
another statistic.
Kia has certainly moved its
Picanto on in leaps and bounds
from its predecessor. On the
road it’s sharper to drive,
quieter and more sporty
than ever before. Its new
technology – which on higher
specification models even
includes Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto – is impressive,
while it’s a comfortable car to
spend time in. What’s more,
it’s always satisfying to know
that even though it’s a car
unlikely to shed that blue rinse
stereotype, if you are a more
adventurous owner it can cope
admirably with all the kit you’ll
need to escape city life.
Bird’s Eye View, August
By John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local
Group
Do you have a garden? If so, do you know
how important it can be for wildlife? In the UK
private gardens cover over 3½ times the total
area of RSPB reserves. This means that the
small tract of land you control can make
a difference in the greater scheme of things.
You can help to give nature a home. And a
garden for wildlife does not mean having a
wild garden. Indeed, overgrown gardens may
have less wildlife than ones we might like to
visit to admire their colourful borders and
large variety of plants. Think what you might
like in your own garden. Flowers giving a riot
of colour from spring to autumn will attract
a range of pollinators. Trees and shrubs,
especially those that bear berries in autumn
will provide food for birds. A pond, even a
small one, could be quickly occupied by
amphibians and dragonflies. Close cut lawns
may not be havens of wildlife, but why not
leave an area of longer grass that could
become a mini meadow.
It also about how gardens are managed. You
could use lots of ant killer, but a Green Woodpecker
is a good natural alternative. Likewise,
instead of slug and snail killer, how about a
Song Thrush? A log pile in an out of the way
corner of the garden can provide a home for
many creatures.
You can contribute to saving wildlife by
looking after your tiny part of planet Earth.
CR5 Trip Down Memory Lane
Chipstead Valley Road, Coulsdon appears on one of Mr Powell’s postcards from the mid
1930’s with neat hedges and fences near Rickman Hill. The road is strangely empty but
an open top bus can be seen in the distance
Standard Deviation – Katherine Heiny
Graham’s second wife, Audra, is warm,
sociable and always ready to throw
herself headlong into any situation. The
total opposite of his first wife, Elspeth,
in fact. So when Elspeth unexpectedly
comes back into Graham’s life, he finds
himself wondering how on earth he could
have fallen in love with two such different
women, and whether he’s ended up with
the right one. If you like quirky
characters, wry humour and reflections
on the absurdities of everyday life, this
book is for you.
Palace of Curiosities – Rosie Garland
Abel and Eve are not like other people.
Abel’s body heals itself. He has no idea
how old he is, but his fractured memories
suggest he’s been alive for a very long
time. Eve – the Lion Girl – is covered
from head to toe in golden hair. Together
they are the two main attractions in a
show featuring extraordinary people. Set
in Victorian England, this is a beautiful
tale of humanity and what it means
to be ‘different’ in a world that prizes
convention.
Lazy Days
Whether you’re stretching out on a sun lounger, or just
grabbing an hour’s peace and quiet in your garden, a good
book is a summer essential in our opinion.
Reservoir 13 – Jon McGregor
A teenage girl goes missing while on
holiday in an English village. Seasons
come and go and life goes on, but
the girl’s mysterious disappearance
continues to affect village life. Some
people dream of finding her alive, others
of discovering her body. This is not a
crime novel, more a glimpse into human
nature. There are a lot of characters, and
you get to know each one as they go
about their daily lives. It’s a quiet book,
but it certainly draws you in.
100% Real – Sam Talbot
If you’re looking for inspiration for
healthy, tasty summer recipes, this book
could be just what you need. While its
focus is on clean eating, it’s not just
about chia seeds and green tea. Recipes
include White Fish Curry, Jerk Chicken,
and Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Rum
Cream. Recipes are accompanied by
full page photos, and are, on the whole,
easy to follow. From light lunches and
snacks to dishes to impress friends,
you’ll find yourself reaching for this
cookery book time and time again.
Once in a Blue Moon Lodge – Lorna
Landvik
A warm, comfortable kind of story with
great characters, first loves, old flames
and family dynamics. Once in a Blue
Moon Lodge follows a family over two
decades – Nora, her mother Patty Jane
and her grandmother Ione. It’s the
sequel to Patty Jane’s House of Curl,
but works as a stand-alone novel.
There is a large cast of characters, and
the timeline is hard to follow at times, as
it jumps from past to present. It’s a very
enjoyable beach read though.
The Trouble with Goats and Sheep –
Joanna Cannon
It’s 1976 and 10 year old Grace’s
neighbour, Mrs Creasy, has gone
missing. With her best friend Tilly in tow,
Grace sets out to solve the mystery.
It soon becomes apparent that the
community is hiding plenty of secrets,
some of which go back almost a
decade. Grace comes across as rather
naive for her age at times, but she’s very
likeable. A funny, easy read that makes
waiting at the airport more bearable.
