VOL 188

The excitement continues!

Murali Krishnan

I am trying to make sense of this all too familiar wise saying “good things comes in small packages” and I have yet to, for the life of me, arrive at a

satisfying conclusion as to one, its validity and two, its supposedly wise theme – a key element within the catchphrase that makes good and clever use

of subtleties and smarts.

Of course the increasingly down on the upside, upwards and downwards nature perpetrated by the ceaseless progression of urban development as it

were have promptly wreaked havoc and chaos in one fell swoop rendering quite a bit of those wise old sayings all but obsolete if not void altogether.

Indeed amidst the chaotic happenings that affected lives old and new, rich and poor, good and bad, with nary a whisker of discrimination, we can all

agree that good things does not necessarily come in small packages and as a matter of course, vice versa.

Take for instance the fabulous Nissan GT-R – big, brawny and berserkingly fast. It literally dwarfs its contemporaries and yet somehow, akin to a

misnomer in theoretical physics, runs circles around its more compact adversaries in almost cartoonish manner.

Of course there are examples of the former catchphrase everywhere it seems, and for me personally I’d take a pocket rocket over a huge powwow

type ride any day. For me ideally it’d be a short wheelbase, rear drive, sub-ton hatch with creamy smooth atmo engine or more like something not too

dissimilar to those legendary Group B racers albeit without the blown engine.

But that doesn’t mean I’d pass on a GT-R, not likely bro.

If ever blessed with the opportunity to attend some sort

of driver training programme; usually under the guise

of corporate upskilling or by virtue of being on the

clientele list of some premium marques, please proceed

to release anything in your grip as if the temperatures

were exceeding the threshold of your tolerance and

sign up for that course.

Equipping yourself with the necessary skills to emerge

unscathed from the warzone that we call Malaysian

roads is notoriously underrated and alarmingly so.

The undermining issue at hand that has permeated the

minds of the majority of drivers here comprises one of

two points.

First is the unfounded belief that if they stick to the

speed limit, use their indicators and eat all their

vegetables nothing will happen to them on the road.

Secondly; and the one that tends to be the spark

behind most road res, is the misplaced condence that

they’re the reincarnation of Aryton Senna and could

put the stunt crew of The Fast & Furious franchise on

unemployment benets.

Regardless, both fail to comprehend the gravity of

attending driver safety courses to be better prepared

for evasive action or regaining control of the vehicle in

the event of a loss of traction.

It goes without saying that being able to do that can

make the difference between seeing your loved ones

again or attaining statistical status on the list of road

deaths in a year.

Passive and active safety features have now come a long

way and although having stability control as standard is

the ultimate logical target, we’ll have to make do with

airbags and ABS.

Proton has done a remarkable job with their recent

compact models such as the Iriz, Saga and Persona by

introducing stability control in the agship variants.

Although not available throughout the range, the

pricing of the premium trims still make those cars the

most affordable new cars with stability control and a

ve-star crash rating (Iriz and Persona).

One thing to point out though is that most driver safety

courses nowadays focus on guiding drivers to make use

of the ABS and stability control for evasive manoeuvres.

Most of the modules consist of evasive action or hard

braking in a corner; both of which will inadvertently

cause the ABS and stability control to kick in.

Now, given that these active safety features are

becoming increasingly available in all vehicles,

educating drivers on how to safely maximise their

effectiveness is paramount. You can now brake hard

and steer without worrying that the tyres will lock up

and cause understeer.

Furthermore, in the event of evasive action such

as simulated by the Moose Test, the stability control

will prevent the car from understeering and then

oversteering during the aggressive lane change.

All this is well and good. Most drivers are generally

unprepared or uneducated enough to place their trust

in these systems. However, the caveat is that physics

isn’t magic and if you’re driving well over the speed

limit or not keeping a safe distance from the car in

front, science will not save you.

Which brings us to the argument that some basic nonassisted

driving skills should be compulsory as well. Take

Finland for example. Taking your driver’s license there

includes some skid pad training that teaches them to

control the car without the aid of stability control.

Sure you can argue that snow there necessitates a

higher level of skills but in general, being equipped with

more skills is never a bad thing. Some basic oversteer

and understeer control would make a huge difference

although there is the possibility of the safety systems

intruding and causing further complications as it tussles

with the driver’s inputs to stabilise the car.

This argument can go on till the bovine come home but

building the skills of drivers will always result in more

positives than negatives, regardless of the amount of

safety tech in the vehicles.

Having said that, if you’re buying a car I implore you

try and get one with stability control if your budget

permits.

MICHELIN LAUNCHES ‘TYRES ARE NOT BANANAS’ CAMPAIGN TO

PROMOTE TYRE FITNESS AND CARE

Michelin Malaysia has launched its ‘Tyres Are Not Bananas” educational

campaign to focus emphasis on tyre quality and care instead of preoccupation

with the date of manufacture of the product as numerous research had

proven that performance was not solely based on the age of a tyre. Using

bananas and its limited shelf life and freshness as an example, Michelin

aims to educate motorists that the countdown on the life of the tyre began

with the date of tment and dedication to regular tyre care rather than an

overemphasis on the date of manufacture.

The Tyres Are Not Bananas promotional campaign from July 12 – August 4,

2017 will entail two

teams of promoters visiting high trac areas in the Klang Valley to create

awareness among motorists and inviting them to join in a photo competition.

Participants will be presented with bananas, a contest card and Michelin

premiums. The competition, run on Facebook, will entail a ve-step process

and require participants to post their most creative photograph of them

posing with bananas, Michelin’s Bibendum or with the photo signage available

from the promoters.

The 100 most creative photos will receive prizes ranging from movie

tickets, Michelin travel bags, and petrol cards while three Grand Prize

winners will each take home a set of

Michelin tyres.

The announcement by Volvo Cars, that every Volvo from 2019 will have

an electric motor as such placing electrication at the core of its future

business, also represents one of the most signicant moves by any car maker

a new chapter in automotive history.

Volvo Cars will introduce a portfolio of electried cars across its model

range, embracing fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mild hybrid

cars. It will launch ve fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three

of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance

and corporate identity, in line with its plans to rebrand its network in Malaysia

over the next 4 years. This includes 5 TYREPLUS outlets in the East Coast

region.

According to Michelin Malaysia’s Managing Director, Mr. Pascal Nouvellon,

the needs of Malaysian car owners nationwide who demand and expect

maximum safety for themselves and their families. At TYREPLUS, safety is a

That’s one small step for grassroots

motorsports and one giant leap for

Vios-kind

Originally envisioned as a humble econobox

that blends all the blandness we’ve come to

expect from a modern Toyota; reliability, fuel

efciency, roominess and paralysed handling

dynamics, the meek Toyota Vios of all things

was selected as the base for Toyota to reignite

its racing pedigree here and the nal product is

now the most hyped racing machine in Malaysian

grassroots motorsports.

Granted, delving into car modding culture here

is as painful on the wallet as it is on the eyes of

fellow petrolheads as you roll around mimicking

an EDM festival’s light show with LEDs strapped

on your car and fake wheels cracking at every

pothole you turn into.

Lest we forget the uneducated that leave their

rear fog lights on 24-7 that makes up much of the

eye pollution we endure on the roads at night.

However, we understand that acquiring a JDM

machine and purchasing genuine parts will leave

you on the staple diet of petrolheads; roti canai

and ais kosong. So we make do with what we can

afford and that’s usually a Vios. The abundance

of imitation parts catering for the Vios is proof

enough of its popularity, albeit not by choice.

Nonetheless, with the right components and

knowhow, the Vios can be transformed into a

formidable track machine. There, we’ve said it

and we’re not bbing.

The Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival is ultimately a

motorsports-based carnival for the family with

the Vios Challenge headlining the event. All the

Vios racecars will be prepared identically save

for minor changes such as seats and steering

wheels to suit the driver’s fancy.

Using the Vios has a number of benets. Being

cars for the people, many can identify with them

and more likely than not would have had some

seat time in it. Secondly, such Vios one make

races already exist in the region so the formula

is proven.

Lastly, to the questions of why the 86 isn’t used…

well it all boils down to money. Using a cheaper

base keeps things more affordable with around

RM90k buying you a race-ready Vios racecar and

entrance into the four rounds that will constitute

the rst season. You also get some free racing

lessons if you’re a rst-timer.

That’s right, anyone with a driver’s license and

the RM90k can get in on the action.

How do you transform a Vios into a formidable

racecar though?

If you’re expecting turbos or forged engine

internals, you’re better off sticking to your PS4

and Gran Turismo. The name of the game here is

keeping it affordable and robust.

Starting off with the entry-level Vios 1.5J M/T

that is assembled right here in Shah Alam, the

A sedated but still ever more lively

Renault hatch

With the festivities in full swing nowadays the overwhelming theme in

the suburbs would be the masses of moms and pops both old and young,

together with their children in tow (some of them ought to have ‘potential

hazard’ signs hung around their necks I mean really) getting all festive-vy

and unhinged, feeding on their family-fuelled holiday cheers and unleashing

their excitement at their ‘neighborhood households’. Indeed for any

outsiders who’re new to the Malaysian way of life, the seemingly perpetual

festive mood; with one ethnically exclusive holiday seasons after another

does give the impression of being in a permanent state of bliss.

The suspension - MacPherson style up front, torsion beam at the rear

– has had some proper Renaultsport attention, something the Clio is

only too happy to advertise with various badges. Its dampers are 40 per

cent stiffer than standard. An ‘RS Drive’ button icks between Normal

and Sport modes, altering the engine and gearbox responses, steering

weight and stability control settings.

Why I chose to start off on this for a prim and proper car review stemmed

from one quintessential consumer practice slash rights slash freedom

– the three major quality notches namely luxury or high end, premium

and/or expensive, and nally cheap and affordable. As different as these

three distinctive classes corresponds to, they’re essentially the same

product affronting similar traits. In other words despite the three distinct

aforementioned categorizations an apple is basically still an apple.

As such this Renault Clio GT Line is undoubtedly a prim and proper Clio albeit

minus the urgency and the rapidness of the benchmark Clio RS – the range

topper the GT Line imitates. While the full strength Clio RS 200 uses a 1.6-

litre turbocharged petrol engine with 197bhp, the GT Line makes do with a

dinky 1.2 motor still blown too, though, it makes a respectable 118bhp and

140lb ft, its torque gure available nice and low, from 1750rpm.

With considerably lower mass as a whole the Clio GT Line hustles from

0-62 in 9.9sec, with a little under 200km/h top end. The engine is mated

exclusively to the six-speed twin-clutch paddleshift gearbox used in the RS

200, known as EDC, though it gains different, more economy-minded ratios.

Fuel economy is rated at 54.3mpg, while CO2 emissions of 120g/km.

Technology wise, Renault has made strides and

if it’s smartphone aping gadgets that turn you

on, it’s one of the carmakers at the forefront. Its

new R-Link system is iPhone like in its intuition

and apart from playing music and the satnav it

boasts a variety of handy apps.

Indeed the Clio GT Line showcases impressive

technical credentials, including turbocharged

downsized petrol engines, six-speed Efcient

Dual Clutch (EDC) transmission and an assertive

look. With its well engineered dynamics it

provides considerable amount of joy for those

with a penchant for the odd heroics here and

there before or after work.

Although the absence of real grunt diminished

the GT Line’s substance considerably compared

to the RS, the erstwhile entry level Clio brought

in by TC Euro Cars caters not to the hot hatch

clientele rather more to the more subdued

customer base with a fair to high degree of

driving enthusiasm and skills coupled to a

partially weightier right feet, and of course an

appreciation for French visual gratication.

Get your rst hand taste of the surprising Clio

GT Line, visit www.renault.com.my for more

Car: Chevrolet Colorado 2.8 High

Country

Engine: 2.8 liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel

VGT

Power Output: 193hp at 3600rpm

Max Torque: 500Nm at 2000rrpm

Transmission: 6-Speed Automatic or

Manual Transmission

The delightful Chevy Colorado 2.8 High Country

Having spent the better part of an extended 3

day weekend with the rather ‘tamer and milder’

(but pretty darn impressive nonetheless) sibling

the Colorado 2.5, it’s a given that we already

had a fair enough idea of what to expect with

the range topping Colorado 2.8 High Country; or

so we thought.

Indeed we’d even go as far as to say this: for the

imposing, hulking new Colorado, for all its might

inasmuch its considerable girth and dimensions

et al, it all but reafrms its exalted and fearsome

position with the bigger and more powerful 2.8

powertrain. At the heart of Colorado revs a 2.8L

Duramax engine. With 193 hp at 3,600 rpm and

500 nm torque at 2,000 rpm, the fuel-efcient,

4-cylinder 2.8L turbo-diesel powerplant delivers

dynamic and responsive performance across

different applications.

Text & Photos: Faz&Furiouz

All that juicy and creamy torque delivered

by Colorado’s sprightly, spirited and efcient

powerplant is mated to a smooth shifting

6-Speed Automatic or Manual Transmission. As

per the norm in a four wheel drive pickup, the

Colorado High Country allows easy switching

between 4WD and 2WD modes in a ash via a

rotary dial placed just rearward of the shifter. In

4WD mode, Colorado delivers additional traction

for steep, muddy and bumpy roads. For everyday

driving conditions, engaging 2WD provides more

fuel economy and efciency.

When it comes to all-round performance,

Colorado packs a punch. Its impressive balance

of power, handling and fuel efciency keeps you

in your element on commutes, heavy-duty work

days and when exploring new roads. Whatever

the adventure demands, Colorado delivers.

Beneath its rugged exterior, Colorado features

a durable frame capable of withstanding heavy

bending forces. Extra support beams built into

door panels help protect passengers from side

collisions. A rigid chassis offers resistance against

bending forces, retaining maximum stability and

traction at curb weight or when fully loaded.

Colorado also comes standard with driver,

passenger and knee airbags, offering additional

protection and peace of mind.

The driving experience itself further reiterated that

peace of mind rmly into place as it immediately

became obvious how unobtrusive the 2.8 liter

Duramax Turbo-Diesel. Taking it through its paces on

the tarmac was such a delight even more so when

you factor in the cocooning interior with its posh

surroundings and premium look and feel. Of course

having 500Nm of torque at your dispense from as low

as 2000rpm had quite a play as such, impressing us

with its effortless progression, its gentle sense of

immediacy, and the summation of all its inherent

prowess, the Colorado 2.8 High Country was a heck

of a performer.

When we took it for a quick runaround over where

it was originally engineered for, namely the rugged

outdoors, the Chevrolet Colorado shone through with

devastating aplomb and surefootedness, dispatching

even the most hostile knuckle-size rocks and pebbles

strewn trek with ease. It was to adopt something a

little more dramatic, an eye-popping revelation.

Colorado High Country check out www.chevrolet.

In a tightly fought race, team Millennium

Motorsport Asia’s Nishiram Singh/Karamjit Singh

took their rst win of the season after capitalizing

on a mistake by FTuned Racing Team’s Raja

Imran on the penultimate lap. Throughout the

race, a couple of mistakes by Raja Imran allowed

Nishiram Singh/Karamjit Singh to take over the

lead albeit briey before the former retake the

lead. The crucial factor came on the penultimate

lap when another mistake by Raja Imran at turn

15, which ended his onslaught, paving the way

for Nishiram Singh/Karamjit Singh to take their

rst win of the season.

Then on to the recently concluded Round 4 of the

Malaysia Speed Festival 2017, which featured a

one race only Enduro format – 35 minutes long,

Millennium Motorsport Asia’s Davy Wong/Asrul

Azam Satria No 609) having had a long battle

with eventual winner N1 Racing’s Desmond Yee

and teammate Mitchell Cheah.

What was worthy of note was the fact that

the No 609 Team Millennium Satria was ‘only’

the team’s second Super Street machine, alas

weren’t exactly ‘lock & loaded’ performance

wise. Based on your average ‘run of the mil’’

Satria, the Millennium race crew went about

their business transforming it into full MSF Super

Street racing spec, with cutting edge Microtech

electronics, the requisite MIVEC 4G63, as well

as all the crucial competition spec ancillaries.

Without going overboard in their reworking of

the Satria #609, meaning keeping things pretty

much ‘civil ‘the Team Millennium Satria emphasis

more on precision handling along with efcient

dynamics.

Round 5 of the 2017 MSF is set for October 15

with the grand nale scheduled for December 2.

If pure blooded, no holds barred racing is what

The new Qmax Energetic Technology Fuel Saving Device

Qmax Energy Saver have long been offering

energy saving benets from its numerous

products, each with their respective plus points

and all of them developed through extensive

research and development done by Qmax’s

brilliant engineers. Now Qmax brings you another

brand new innovation that guarantees the same

wondrous result which Qmax have become

increasingly famous for. V-Class Motorsport

introduces the latest Qmax Energetic Technology

Fuel Saving device – created for you and your

vehicle’s benet.

The new Qmax Energetic Technology was

derived from the original Nanotechnology that

had been proven time and time again to work

wonders for your benets. As had been dened

extensively in the past Nanotechnology is

essentially the creation of functional materials,

devices and systems through control of matter

on the nanometer scale (1-100 nanometers),

implicitly the exploitation of novel phenomena

and properties (physical, chemical, biological,

mechanical and electrical) at that length scale.

Having been developed over ve successive

generations of cutting edge Nanotechnology

the new Qmax Energetic Technology Energy

Saver is a fuel saving device unlike no other,

with benets that goes a long way towards the

optimum performance and longevity of your car.

Basically the combustion in an internal

combustion engine essentially consists of three

element sources of air, fuel and ignition. Both

air and fuel are mixed and goes into combustion

chamber and this is compressed by a piston

before the spark plug producing electrical spark

that ignites the air-fuel mixture. For optimum

combustion, it has to be a right ratio amount of

air and fuel in the cylinders before the mixture

is ignited with sufcient current ow through

the spark plugs. Hence, the more effective the

combustion, the more power an engine can

produce.

The Qmax Energetic Technology Fuel Saving

device optimizes all the three key elements

(air, fuel & spark) by treating each elements

prior to the combustion process; optimizing

the air molecules making them more active

and denser and thereby more efcient, fuel

molecules are stimulated enabling better

atomization for markedly improved combustion

efciency which in turn produces substantially

more energy, and as for the spark or ignition

the Qmax Energetic Technology stabilizes the

current and simultaneously reduces distortion

and noise, enabling greater electric current to

be delivered, giving better battery charge and

also reduces the burden on the alternator.

The Qmax Energetic Technology Energy Saver

Fuel Saving device allows you to save money on

fuel by up to 15% reduction in fuel consumption,

as well as giving you considerable increment in

power output. For forced induction engines the

Qmax Energetic Technology Energy Saver device

also minimizes turbo lag. Easily installed in less

than ten minutes the Qmax Energetic Technology

Fuel Saving device is also maintenance free.

Try the new Qmax Energetic Technology fuel

saving device for yourself and experience all the

stellar benets rst hand. For more information

Power Pages

The SuperCircuit brand needs no introduction

for local enthusiasts, being one of the most

respected brands in the local tuning scene

namely the aftermarket exhaust segment.

Manufactured and distributed by H Performance

Motorsports – itself a reputable player in the

buzzing local tuning market, all SuperCircuit

products are designed with performance and

durability in mind, and are made with grade 304

stainless steel, CNC mandrel bent and fully TIG/

Argon welded.

For our Power Page segment this issue we are

featuring the SuperCircuit High-Flow Downpipe

available exclusively from H Performance

Motorsports S/B, developed specically for

the F55/F56 Mini Cooper S – the third and

current generation guise of the modern Mini.

Sporting some discreet restyling as well as being

considerably larger in dimensions compared to

its 2013 R56 predecessor, the F55 Cooper S is

powered by tweaked version of the BMW B48 2

liter 4 cylinder turbo motor which propels the

Mini Cooper S to 6.8 seconds for the century

sprint and 146mph (235km/h) maximum speed,

respectable hot hatch numbers no doubt.

As you can see from the images there’s a marked

difference between the SuperCircuit High

Flow downpipe and the stock Cooper S unit it

replaces. The SuperCircuit F55 F56 Cooper S

High Flow Downpipe features Master TIG welding

craftsmanship, CAD and Mandrel bent pipework

allowing a constant internal tube diameter

which in turn allows for smooth and constant gas

outow. As can be seen from the Dyno graphs

shown the increase as per both the horsepower

and torque gures from the SuperCircuit

Downpipe installation on the Cooper S, with

the catalytic converter uninstalled, was truly

impressive.

OEM

High Flow Downpipe

First up from the base reading the standard Mini

Cooper S with its aforementioned B48 2 liter

turbo engine has a max power output of 193ps

at around 5000rpm and max torque of 295Nm at

just over 4500rpm. Replacing the stock Cooper

S’s downpipe with the SuperCircuit High-Flow

Downpipe promptly enabled the diminutive

Cooper S to reach the signicant 100ps per liter

benchmark with 201ps at 4800rpm and max

torque of 324Nm arriving at just over 2000rpm.

(All at the wheel gures)

Just as remarkable are the accompanying

benets that come with the H Performance

SuperCircuit downpipe upgrade – improved

acceleration, improved low/mid-range torque,

sharper throttle response, and of course that

aural appreciation of the raspy, exciting and

higher quality sound that renowned exhaust

brands possess regardless of engine speeds.

In other words, you get the full-on SuperCircuit

effect across the rev range.

Tech Tune

BLOW

OFF

VALVE

Our Tech Tune segment for this issue concerns that wonderful noise-unleashing contraption turbo lovers can’t get enough off – blow off valve. Never mind

that its namesake might take on a rather ‘naughty’ connotation, a blow off valve is an important part to any turbocharged or supercharged vehicle.

These valves save our forced induction components in a way that most users may over look. Other terms you may hear or read about that are essentially

the same thing to Blow Off Valve, are recirc (re-circulating) valves, diverter valve, bypass valves, or the chic ‘stylized’ abbreviated BOV.

A blowoff valve (BOV) is similar to a wastegate, except it works on the intake side of the turbocharger. Once a certain level of pressure is reached, the

inlet air opens a spring, allowing for the intake air downstream of the turbocharger to either vent to the atmosphere or be redirected back into the

turbo. Blowoff valves which open to the atmosphere give the iconic “pssshh” sound, which is heard when you let off the throttle. Instead of the high

pressure air trying to work its way back through the compressor (surge), a BOV allows it to escape.

Why we have blow off valves?

Blow off valves are important in helping with

the longevity of turbochargers and centrifugal

superchargers. These valves open whenever

there is enough boost pressure in the intake

pipes, and vacuum from the intake manifold.

Essentially, these valves operate every time

the throttle is opening enough to create boost

pressure, and then backed off to create vacuum.

When this valve opens it releases the pressurized

air in the intake piping either back to the turbo

intake piping or vents it to the atmosphere.

The reason this is important is because if that

pressurized air is not allowed to escape once

the throttle buttery closes, then the air will

apply pressure on the turbo or superchargers

compressor wheel putting un-wanted stress on

it. While this stress is very small, over time it

can cause added wear to the bearings and cause

the unit to fail prematurely.

Another great benet of a BOV, other than adding

longevity and reliability to your set-up, is that

it can help maintain turbine speeds in-between

shifts adding a performance enhancement as well

to the vehicle. There are not many modications

one can do to an engine that can give them

reliability and POWER, so a BOV should be an

essential component on your list if running a

turbocharger or centrifugal blower.

How a Blow Off Valve Works

A Blow Off Valve works the same as

a Wastegate does with a valve controlled by a

diaphragm. The diaphragm has a spring and a

vacuum port input to help open and close the

valve. A great article has been written on this

topic in the How a Wastegate Works section.

If you are un-familiar with how a Wastegate

works as well as a BOV follow this link over to

the Wastegate article for a more in-depth look

at how Wastegates and

Blow Off Valves work.

The usual arrangement is

to have the pressure side

of the valve attached to

the pipe between the

turbo and the throttle,

and a vacuum hose on

the top of the valve

hooked up to the inlet

manifold after the

throttle body. A spring

holds the valve shut.

When you are on the

throttle, the pressure

in the turbo piping and

the inlet manifold is

equal, meaning that the

pressure on each side

of the valve is the same

and therefore cancels

itself out, leaving the

spring holding the valve shut. When you lift off

the throttle, you have high pressure in the turbo

piping, and a vacuum in the inlet manifold. The

pressure on the bottom of the valve and the

vacuum on the top combine to lift the valve open

and release the pressure in the turbo piping,

since it can no longer go into the engine.

Re-circulating Vs Vented Blow off Valve

Recirculating BOV

A re-circulated BOV is one where the boost

pressure is re-circulated back into the intake

just before the turbo. This type of set-up

is a must for those that are running a Mass

Air Fuel (MAF) sensor. The reason for

this is that the MAF has already

accounted for the air that is in

the intake manifold, and if it

was allowed to escape to the

atmosphere, the car would

run overly rich due to the fact

that the ECU still believes

that the air is in the intake

tract. A bonus to running

a re-circulated BOV is that

the air being re-circulated

can be brought back into the

turbochargers intake pipe at

a location and angle so that

the air pressure is forced

directly onto the compressor

wheel. This will aid even more

in helping to keep the turbo

spooled up and running inbetween

shifts, or times

when you are quickly on

and off the gas pedal. A

turbo type made by Borg

Warner turbo systems

called the EFR series has a build

in, re-circulated BOV built into the

turbo’s compressor housing.

Vented BOV

A vented BOV is one where the air is just released

to the atmosphere instead of being re-circulated

back into the system. Many argue that all BOV’s

should be re-circulated back into the turbo’s

intake tract to gain that slight performance

increase in response, but some argue the sound

of a vented BOV makes up for any performance

loses. Another thing to note is that setting up

a Vented Blow Off Valve is simpler than a Recirculated

set-up just for the pure fact that

there is really nothing to set-up, you just vent

the air out. Ultimately its up to the end user

which method they choose to employ on their

particular set-up.

What are the components of a turbocharger?

The layout of the turbocharger in a given

application is critical to a properly performing

system. Intake and exhaust plumbing is often

driven primarily by packaging constraints. We

will explore exhaust manifolds in more detail in

subsequent tutorials; however, it is important to

understand the need for a BOV or (compressor

bypass valve) on the intake tract and a

Wastegates for the exhaust ow.

The Blow-Off valve (BOV) is a pressure relief

device on the intake tract to prevent the turbo’s

compressor from going into surge. The BOV should

be installed between the compressor discharge

and the throttle body, preferably downstream of

the charge air cooler (if equipped). When the

throttle is closed rapidly, the airow is quickly

reduced, causing ow instability and pressure

uctuations. These rapidly cycling pressure

uctuations are the audible evidence of surge.

Surge can eventually lead to thrust bearing

failure due to the high loads associated with it.

Blow-Off valves use a combination of manifold

pressure signal and spring force to detect when

the throttle is closed. When the throttle is closed

rapidly, the BOV vents boost in the intake

tract to atmosphere to relieve the

pressure; helping to eliminate

the phenomenon of surge

BOV Myths

Blow-off valve myth #1

One of the biggest

misconceptions about blowoff

valves is that you need to

tighten the

spring to

run higher

boost. This

is totally

incorrect

(at least,

for a GFB

v a l v e

anyway),

as you can

see from

the last

paragraph, at

full throttle, the

pressure on the top and

bottom of the valve is equal,

therefore cancelling itself out. So

no matter what boost pressure you

run, the valve will stay shut.

Leaking factory valves: Having said that, some

factory valves have systems designed into them

to crack open at high boost, in order to protect

the engine from boost spikes. They do this by

designing the pressure to be unequal on the top

an bottom of the valve, thereby overcoming the

spring at a certain pressure.

If you are intentionally raising the boost level,

this is bad news as the valve will begin to leak

pressure. Examples of factory valves which

exhibit this behaviour are the Subaru WRX MY95-

98, and MY01-04, Mitsubishi Lancer GSR, and

Nissan 200SX to name a few.

Replacing these valves when increasing the boost

is a good idea.

Blow-off valve myth #2

The uttering sound is usually believed to be the

blow-off valve. In reality, it is caused by a blowoff

valve, but does not come from the blow-off

valve. If the spring pre-load is adjusted too

tight, this will cause compressor surge, which as

described above is the sound of air exiting the

turbo.

Compressor surge: You can think or surge as the

point at which the compressor blades begin to

“slip” in the air, losing their pumping ability,

much like an aircraft wing loses its lift when

it stalls. In a turbo, this happens in a series of

bursts, as the blades slip, then bite, slip then

bite. This sets up a pulsing wave in the turbo

piping and explains why the sound has that

characteristic “utter”.

The interesting thing about compressor surge is

that it occurs much more readily at low turbo

shaft speeds. At these low shaft speeds, on road

cars this is generally between 2000 and 3000

RPM, compressor surge is not much of a problem,

as the loads generated by the surge are miniscule

compared to what the turbo encounters at high

boost. However, if surge occurs at high RPM and

boost, it is possible to reduce the turbo life and/

or damage the compressor.

In summation

Their names are many, blow-off valve, dump

tube, recirculation valve, bypass valve, diverter

valve, and their function is similar but as

with anything you need the right tool for the

job. According to experts the most important

consideration is to match the size of the valve

with the ow of the system and when in doubt

it’s better to go a little big than a little small.

The same certied experts also said )and I quote

following reminder: Ultimately, Picking the best

valve comes down to the how much boost you’ll

be running and the physical space available for

installation,” says Staggs. “Many units have an

adjustment screws or swappable springs to tailor

valve activation to each particular application.

Use the resources of the manufacturer or a

trusted tuner to get the right size the rst time.

Feature Car | 2013 Lexus ISF

We welcome another entry from the US of A into the Hyper Universe of marvelously clothed and wickedly tweaked import rides that could well

have made a few seconds of screen time in either the one before the last Fast Furious ick (since that last one had a minimal screen play in the US)

or perhaps the next one (that’d be the ninth right? I’ve lost count). With a long list of sponsors with distinctly familiar names doing the sponsoring,

the Lexus IS F sits snugly in the midst of uncompromising American builds that embody the purest spirit of the North American tuning culture.

The IS F is one out of three offering from Lexus in its IS Line the other two being the IS 250 and the IS 350 sport saloons – both available with

all-wheel drive or in adrenaline-infused F SPORT models. The latter pairing offers and I quote “for the driver who’s not afraid to turn a few more

heads in the process”. While the IS F is of course, for the true driving enthusiast, the IS line up’s bonade ‘hardest-charging, high-performance

beast’. And just to avoid any potential copyright infringements and all let us say right here and now that the above quotes were yanked out direct

from Lexus own ‘manicured’ statements. There.

But there’s hardly any manicured ngernails at play in the stock IS F much less this fantabulous example from Team Hybrid San Diego Chapter, or

more precisely from GT – the uber cool initial of the owner one Geoff Turner a native of Raleigh North Carolina. In his superbly written bio Geoff

mentioned that those who know of him by the alias of ‘isf_ing_legit’ for reasons made abundantly clear over this feature. Now GT’s 2013 IS F is

a work in progress going on for 3 years now (and counting), and just you wait for the punch line concerning this Panda themed Lexus – it was a

feature vehicle at the 2016 SEMA show, and according to Geoff, he ‘have many more plans for future’.

More Luscious Lexus from SEMA

How’s that dedication and passion? And just to

continue a bit more let us allow the man himself

to speak for a bit yes? Cue the emotive violin

music and here we go:

“After a couple years, I moved out the San

Diego, California for new orders. The moment I

moved out here I noticed the car scene was huge

and fell in love with the car culture immediately.

After a couple of month, I was recruited by

Team Hybrid and knew that I had to step up

my game. After a year of heavily modifying my

ISF, I earned the right to brag, winning multiple

car show trophies and breaking lots of necks

along the way. To date, the ISF has won over 20

trophies on the West Coast in California, Nevada,

Arizona, and North Carolina. I enjoy competing

in shows like Hot Import Nights, Import Face-off,

Spocom, and Extreme Autofest. All the awards

and accomplishments mean nothing to me as I

have always been about creating a unique build

to share with others.”

GT continues, “I have lived in San Diego for about

2 years or so and always been big on cars since I

moved here. My build has been both show and go.

My build has been based on the panda concept. It

being Lexus’s Ultra white and majority of Carbon

Fiber. As well as incorporating the F brand into

the interior aspects. When I bought the car you

think luxury and performance. I have modied it

to the point that it is more t for the race track

than the streets.”

For an entrée the bog standard IS F feeds off a

vintage brute of an engine – a 5 liter 32 valve V8

rated at 416 hp and 371 lb. ft of torque. These

numbers while doesn’t exactly set the world

alight in this days of mammoth power outputs

from outrageously modded forced induction

motor, is well enough to take the svelte sedan

from naught to 60 in a breezy 4.6 seconds.

Now GT kept things pretty straightforward in

the engine bay – nothing excessive except for

a Takeda Performance Intake and Mishimoto

Carbon Fiber Catch Can Installed, while waste

gases gets dumped via a trick Meisterscraft

Exhaust system. Of course, even then there’s

bound to be some manner of extra reworks at

play thereafter. Improvements as per the 5 liter

V8’s accelerations comes courtesy of an APEXi

Acceleration Controller

On the chassis front things are more extensive

with D2 Racing coilovers, beefed up linkages,

joints and arms, and the likes. Stopping power

gets upped as well with Brembo drilled rotors.

In any case check out the complete uncensored

mod list at the feature’s end.

Now before we nish off let us dwell a tiny wee

bit upon the outstanding visual enhancements

Geoff has endowed his SEMA starring, multiple

awards winning IS F with: gorgeous Wald 3 Piece

Black Bison Body Kit, Seibon Carbon Fiber Hood,

TOM’s Carbon Fiber Side Skirts with smooth

and silky 4D Carbon Fiber Wraps being applied

accordingly. Wheels & Tires combo are 20 inch

AVANT GARDE F510 shod with ultra low prole

Michelin Super Sports. Simply gorgeous! And we

haven’t event touch on the interior as of yet!

And the ICE!

Yes the ICE and the interior! The show-stopping

ensemble which includes that true audiophile

quality Mark Levinson 14 speakers sound system,

JL Audio subs, custom this and tailor made that

up front and around the back with all the bells

and whistles in between.

Fine SEMA worthy specimen from San Diego’s Team Hybrid

Simply put the epitome of the American Import

scene par excellence.

Feature Car |Volvo S60 R

We all know the Nordic God of Thunder wields his mighty

Mjölnir to wipe out his enemies but what would he get behind

the wheel of to wipe out ricers on the street? Surely it’s forged

from Swedish steel with a little speed under the hood.

Text : Hypertune

Model : Karmun

Unfortunately, we tend to associate

Volvos with safety and indestructability.

Sure they were; and still are, some of

the safest cars on the road. Fashioned

out some invincible Swedish steel,

they would unforgivingly crush

anything stumbled into their path and

occasionally outlived their owners.

Remember the saying “When a

unstoppable force met at immovable

object?” Well depending on if the

Volvo was parked or on the move, it

could easily take on either side of the

two that formed the quote.

Speed is not something mentioned in the same

breath as Volvos and that is one of the common

misconceptions about the marque. Cars like

the 850 T5R and any of the current crop of

R-badged Volvos or Polestar machines easily

pack barns worth of horses under the hood and

are surprisingly tuneable to monstrous power

levels with relatively simple upgrades.

Even the current portfolio of Volvos pack quite a

punch on the road and not just when you crash

into them. Turbocharging Volvos goes a long way

back and those engines could take one hell of a

beating.

This genuine S60 R featured here is well past

the decade mark and even if the engine was

untouched, it would still give plenty of modern

performance machinery a run for their money

with its 296hp turbo inline-ve from the

factory.

However, being Hypertune this car has some

tricks up its red sleeves.

Pumping more boost into the engine is a custom

Megalodon turbocharger and Megalodon downpipe

set to increase the air being combusted. Of

course, in Scandinavian weather the ambient

temperatures wouldn’t play such a large role in

intake temperatures but in our tropical sweatfest

a larger Treadstone intercooler was tted

with custom pipework from Megalodon.

If you’ve yet to shower your eardrums in the

sweet symphony of turbo inline-ves, YouTube is

your new friend and we’ll wait while you check

them out.

Done? Good. To amplify the rumble of the

straight ve, a TME cat-back exhaust system was

tted and shoots out through a twin-barrel pipe

on the left.

Further aiding in keeping intake temps low, a

Snow Performance water-methanol injection

Stage 2 system was tted and is activated under

certain driving conditions such as a full load or

wide-open throttle.

Given the considerably monstrous addition of air

into the combustion chamber, a custom Shark

Performance tune was reashed into the ECU to

the tune of 417hp. Let that sink in, this Volvo

is pumping out over 400 Swedish ponies which

by our calculations are healthier than regular

stallions.

A ScanGauge monitoring system plugs into the

OBD2 port to display vital engine parameters to

the driver.

The stock factory automatic is proven to be

capable of handling massive amounts of power

and the only upgrade here is an ATF cooler

to keep the uids from overheating under

continuous hard use.

Surprisingly however, the handling department

has been overlooked in this round of promotions.

Nonetheless, given the Four-C system from the

factory that is a collaboration with Ohlins and

Monroe, the semi-active suspension is more than

capable of switching from docile grocery-getter

to track toy.

Packing Brembos when new, the braking upgrades

retained the calipers with only changes to Stop

Tech cross drilled and slotted brake rotors paired

with Ferodo Racing DS2500 brake pads and steelbraided

brake hoses.

Hoping to maintain the sleeper look, the owner

has kept the stock wheels that would blend

in with the regular S60 pretty well. Stickier

rubbers in the form of Michelin Pilot Sport 3 in a

235/45R17 sizing do take over contact with terra

rma duties.

As the pictures can tell, the sleeper look is

well and truly alive here with no modications

to the exterior and even interior. Interestingly;

and a little nugget of information, this S60 R

is equipped with the an R-only leather option

for the interior; Atacama, that was available

for an additional charge. It was an unpainted,

orangey natural leather with a baseball glovelike

thickness and feel for durability.

With over 400hp, We think Thor would be

extremely happy to forego the Bifrost for

travelling aound the realms and take a ride in

this S60 R. He might have to get Odin to add

some wings to it however to reach orbit.

Subtle, Understated or

Sheer Class? We say All

three in one more like.

Feature Car | Mitsubishi Evolution VI

In the most cordial of fd

description slash summation of a bonade drivers’ car, the Lancer EVO

VI offers extreme

performance and barely credible reserves of grip, yet it’s not a particularly intimidating car to drive. Some

may feel that the EVO VI is chunky, aggressive and purposeful, while most of the ‘uninitiated’ lot; as in the

sort that have no love nor affection for Mitsu’s iconic road warrior, think it in less than attering terms, in a

full on descriptive narrative, not a looker. But then again you can’t please everybody now can you?

Of course, seeing as the Lancer was derived out of a ‘humble & unassuming’ Mitsubishi Carisma simply means

that you get four doors, a big boot, an upright seating position and pretty good space for rear passengers.

The Abundantly Evolved Lancer EVO genealogy came forth off the former, and should you take the ‘this from

that pairing’ further you’re bound to come across a very, very familiar automobile.

When you look in the mirror you’ll see a lot of rear wing, but with this car perhaps more than any other, form

is denitely following function. Now we’re all familiar with the EVO lineage do we not, with the rst three

remaining well nigh identical albeit with discreet extremely subtle variations from one edition to the next.

The fourth generation received the somewhat overdue visual updates while remaining as zany as ever.

A stand out Evo among a barrage of

standout Evos

Come the fth inline the changes were substantial to say the least – upgraded Recaro seats, ared arches, redesigned

spoilers as such, as well as a number of additional revisions outside and inside. Of course on the performance front

– increasingly detrimental in the Evolution genealogy with the intensifying competition coming from its detractors,

the handy upgrades encompassed both the handling and engine performance.

But what matters more than anything in this regard is the sixth Evo – the one and the same version being spread

apart far and wide in this here piece. We have right here a rather unique interpretation of the Evo formulae that

received a pretty juicy injection of extra goodies, a mishmash of aftermarket repower and up-rated handling.

Having transplanted the motor from the Tommi Makinen edition, the owner who’ve collaborated with 199 Garage

Stunning Retro-Ration

Text: Faz

Photos: Kenny Yeoh & Dennis Lhy

Model: Jacquelyn

Oh My! That’s a heck of a perfect split!

We have here another timely ‘blast from the

variable past’ – the gist of that cliché being the

word ‘variable’. Now we need to remember

that that particular term explicitly refers to a

certain era which is in no way, even remotely so,

reemerging (or returning, revisiting, inasmuch

most if not all terms with‘re’ added). I mean

sure we’re all allowed to be nostalgic and

reminisce about the ‘good old days’, have a retro

celebration with most if not all retro elements

err retrotted; we can adopt numerous ‘olden’

elements within a number of permutations and

yet as a generation we’re forever more divested

from our forebears. End of discussion.

What doth cometh and I have no clue as to why

I’ve precluded the medieval Shakespearean lilt

right to the left or right up here, except for this

one reason – and that reason be our collective

fascination with the past, and therein my own

fascination and active association with hither

nary even a tiny hint of disrespect. Well, of

course there were some unattering jibes here

and there; for one thing the fashion senses of

that certain pre millennium era prompted even

the most conservative of folks a wry smile at

minimum (cue the inordinately high, above

navel waistlines).

But what’s even more intriguing was that despite

the freakishly high waistline the automobiles

of that era were among the most memorable

and most iconic of automobiles especially so

in the low slung silhouette slash sports cars

segment. We’re talking about the late 70s to

early 80s which prompted the era of excess and

outrageousness epitomized by the Italians for

the most part – the Countach, The 512BB, the

Stratos et all with some stellar appearance from

the Germans (the speedy 911, with some luxury

coupes adorn with the contemporary premium

brands therein).

And of course somehow or rather the ever more prominent

Japanese presence had their own superlative examples as well

such as the 280ZX right here – one of the most famous sports car

from the Nissan Z genealogy. Known as the Datsun/Nissan 280ZX in

export markets, the car continued to use the “Fairlady” moniker

in the Japanese domestic market.

The only thing left unchanged from the previous 280Z was the

5-speed manual transmission and 2.8-liter L28 inline-6 engine,

while the entire car overall was made more luxurious to meet

growing consumer demands. Major changes for this new

generation of Z-cars include t-tops, introduced in 1980, and

a turbocharged model introduced in 1981, complementing the

naturally aspirated (NA) 2-seater and NA 2+2 models.

The L28E is the enlarged 2,753 cc engine

produced from 1975 to 1984 equipped with dishtop

pistons from 1975 to 1978 and 1979 to 1983

with at top pistons and a resulting compression

ratio of 8.3:1. The E stands for electronic

multiport fuel injection, provided by Bosch using

the L-Jetronic system, and is one of the rst

Japanese produced vehicles to introduce the

technology.

For this attention-grabbing 280ZX the owner

went with a rough 50-50 approximation of the

old and the new, the original and the modernized

version, so to speak. Externally it’s adorn with

fully custom D1 full wide bodykit which was

(according to the owner) made from scratch,

only done so meticulously and expertly with top

notched nish through and through, beautifully

topped off with that streak of black paint along

the hood. As you can readily see it is absolutely

gorgeous and it nailed the whole old and new

remix look to perfection, particularly that

famous Work Meister wheels, with gold lugs in

sizes a couple of inches bigger than the original.

Of course, detailing aside the owner kept things

pretty straightforward as per the L28E Datsun

engine only adding Custom D Club stainless steel

extractor, NISMO mufer and electric fan. Climb

inside the dark ambient retro cabin received

Recaro seats and Nardi deep dish steering.

Classy and stunning piece of retro-ration.

Feature Car | R34 V-Spec II NUR

A fabulous R34 V-Spec II NUR that

germinated from the heart and soul

of motor racing – the Nordschleife

Text: Faz

Photos: Daniel Soon Handsome

For Nissan buffs you might need more than a

cup of coffee, a nice and cozy sofa and maybe

some vintage Cuban cigar to indulge over these

next few pages. The extent of Nissan’s gofaster

department handy work has been well

documented over the years; right from before

the days of the internet. And so with the way

things are these days the details regarding the

fabulous GT-R V-Spec II Nur are easily googleable.

The GF-BNR34 (R34) Skyline GT-R and GT-R V-Spec

models were released in January 1999. The R34

GT-R was also shorter (from front to rear), and

the front overhang reduced. The valve covers

were painted glossy red (color code Cherry Red

Effect Z24 or X1020), as opposed to black in

previous models. A new feature on the R34 GT-R

is a 5.8” LCD multifunction display on the center

of the dashboard, which shows seven different

live readings of engine and vehicle statistics

such as turbocharger pressure (1.2 bar max), oil

and water temperature, among others.

The GT-R V·spec model added two extra

features to the display: intake and exhaust gas

temperatures. Nismo Multi-function Displays

(MFD) can be bought at an extra cost, they include

a lap timer, G-Force meter and an increase in

boost pressure measurement to 2 bar. The R34

GT-R was made shorter in response to customer

concerns who thought the R33 was too bulky.

Like the R33, the new R34 GT-R V·spec (Victory

Specication) models come equipped with the

ATTESA E-TS Pro system and an Active LSD at the

rear, while standard GT-R models come with the

non-Pro system and a conventional mechanical

differential. The V.spec model also had rmer

suspension and lower ground clearance, thanks

to front and side splitters, as well as a rear

carbon ber air diffuser, designed to keep air

owing smoothly under the car.

Nissan released a nal production model of the

R34 GT-R called the Skyline GT-R V·spec II Nür

and the Skyline GT-R M·spec Nür. The Nür was

named after the famous German Nürburgring

racetrack, where the Skyline was developed. In

total 1000 R34 GT-R Nür(s) were made, 750 were

V·spec II Nürs’ and 250 M·Spec Nürs’. The Nür

model featured an improved RB26DETT based on

the N1 racing engine. The standard turbochargers

were upgraded to larger versions with a slight

increase in boost and the ceramic blades were

replaced with steel versions. This has increased

lag, but to compensate the turbo’s durability was

improved while being able to handle a bigger

boost increase. This allowed tuners to increase

the boost safely with standard turbos up to 340

kW (450 hp) at the crank.

The V.spec II Nür is based on the regular V·spec

II model, and the M·spec Nür was based on the

regular M·spec model. Other than the addition

of the Nür engine, the Nür models also included

a different color of stitching on the interior trim,

as well as a speedometer reading up to 300 km/h

(186 mph), and gold valve covers instead of red.

Due to Japanese car industry norms at the time,

the car was advertised as having 206 kW (276 hp)

but it actually had over 246 kW (330 hp) when it

left the factory.

Surely for this baby right here the numbers are

way higher. With the N1 spec RB26 DETT given a

healthy bit of go faster products. Of course all

the extra oomph does not do justice to what is

an already a ne R34, you tend to ask how far

along might you want to take it do you not?

Sure enough the owner quoted a more than

adequate 300kW at the wheel courtesy of some

aftermarket plenitudes – N1 Turbo & Actuators,

HKS Oil Cooler, Greddy Oil Filter Relocation,

Circuit Sports Fan Controller, Garage Defend

Cooling Panel, Radiator Koyorad, Flex-A-Lite

Radiator Fan, Samco hoses, Phase2Motor Trend

Hose Clamp and Weldina NE-1 Titanium Exhaust

Mufer.

Thereafter you’ve got a myriad of extra splurge

of handy suspension parts, styling adornments

and what have you. Whether it adds or subtracts

from the nery of what is undoubtedly a

superlative performance car par excellence I

leave that for you to judge.

Words does not do it justice,

you need to see it to feel it

Feature Car | Honda Civic EF9

Text : Hypertune

Photo : Kenny Yeoh @eosguy

Old Honda’s don’t die… they just get faster.

Surely you’ve heard a VTEC fanboy utter

that quote at least once at a car meet and

as cliché as it sounds, it’s true for a reason.

Enter “Exhibit A.”

It’s hard to place your nger on it when the topic arises but old Honda’s exude this closet desirability for even the most anti-

VTEC boys. Perhaps it’s got something to do with one of the all-time favourite quotes regarding the Big H badge, “Old Honda’s

don’t die, they just get faster.”

No matter what’s your tipple, and old Honda that guns it and sings the VTEC national anthem will always be a cause for whiplash

as you swing your head around to catch a glimpse of it as it pulls away.

They make great racecars as well as the years trim down their pricing and make it a sensible choice for a dedicated track toy,

much like the Civic EF9 here.

Hailing from our neighbours down south, the humble Civic EF is hovering right about the 30 year mark now which makes it

considerably old. Nonetheless, all Civics; as docile as they appear, can be transformed into something blisteringly fast with

just a simple B-Series engine swap and that allows it to make some bold statements. Lastly, a quick skim of the spec sheet will

conrm that this hatch is overowing with some of the most prized Honda components… full of gold.

Residing under the hood is a B16A but what it

left the factory is long gone now. The head has

been given a complete makeover with a 4 Piston

Racing CNC ported head now housing oversized

1mm intake valves, Buddyclub valve springs

and Buddyclub titanium retainers to handle the

Buddyclub Spec-6 camshafts that feature around

319-degrees of inlet duration and 307-degrees

for the exhaust. Talk about a lumpy idle.

Air enters the 4 Piston Racing ported Skunk

2 Ultra Street intake manifold via a K&N cone

intake with a Skunk 2 70m throttle between the

two.

The block has been beefed up with 84mm

Wiseco high compression pistons and BC Racing

forged conrods on the stock crankshaft. Given

the stratospheric redline, an ATI Super Damper

Harmonic Balancer was tted as well.

Fuel enters via K20A injectors, governed by a

Sard fuel pressure regulator. Once combusted,

the exhaust gases make their way out through

a Hytech Try-Y exhaust manifold. Supporting

components comprise of a Sard aluminium

radiator, Mocal 25-row oil cooler and Samco

silicone radiator hoses.

How does everything work in harmony? A tried and

tested Apexi Power FC unit runs the powertrain

and is hooked up by a Rywire mil-spec tucked

harness. If you’re on Instagram, be sure to check

out the Rywire account for some harness porn.

A trio of GReddy gauges in the cabin help the

lucky sod driving it to keep an eye on water

temperature, oil temperature and oil pressure.

A PLX wideband air/fuel ratio gauge sits next to

the instrument cluster.

Power makes its way to the front wheels via

the stock ve-speed transmission but with a

MFactory 4.71-nal drive for better gearing and

a Cusco 1-way LSD to tighten things up on corner

exit.

Civics boast some impeccable handling from the

factory but the demands of a track toy deemed

it necessary for some upgrades. A fully spotwelded

body and Cusco six-point bolt-in rollcage

reduces ex and stiffens everything up to

ensure the suspension is working without foreign

intrusion.

Said suspension consists of some of the nest

coilovers available on the market; KW V3. ST

Suspension 22mm adjustable front and rear antiroll

bars tie the strut towers together.

From there, Function 7 billet rear lower control

arms, a Hardrace rear camber kit, Skunk2 front

camber kit, a custom front traction bar (castor

adjustable), Cusco front and rear strut bars as

well as a J’s Racing roll centre adjuster kit keep

the alignment in check. Custom teon bushings

replace all the squishy factory pieces to reduce

ex.

A pseudo retro Civic with a fearsome giant killing performance arsenal

Weighing next to nothing didn’t mean the braking department was neglected.

A high speed circuit like Sepang would ask questions about longevity that the

stock system wouldn’t be able to answer.

Spoon twin-block calipers bite on custom Dixcel two-piece heat-treated

oating rotors and Dixcel Type-Z brake pads up front. In the rear end, Civic

EK9 calipers and rotors work with Dixcel Type-ES brake pads to reign things

in. Adding more braking force is a Civic EK9 1.0-inch master cylinder pump

and Integra DC2 GSR single diaphragm brake booster.

Adding a dash of colour to the build is a set of lightweight SSR Type C wheels

wrapped in Dunlop Direzza Z2 Star Spec tyres measuring 205/50R15 for circuit

work. On the street, some Work RSZ-R and all-weather friendly Michelin Pilot

Sport 3 rubbers take over.

The interior belies its intended purpose with some tasteful additions to make

it more habitable. Lovely to the touch, Alcantara now covers the dashboard,

center console and door panels for a premium look.

A Recaro SPG full bucket houses the driver while a less constricting SR3 holds

the passenger. Steering input is via a Team Oreca deep-dish steering wheel

and a Civic EK9 instrument cluster, pedals and gear knob lends the cabin a

racier feel.

Helping it maintain a sleeper look; which will come in handy in avoiding the

authorities in Singapore, the exterior has been left completely stock.

Never judge a book by its cover and this Civic is testament to the potential

lurking under the hood. What it lacks in horsepower, it makes up for in a

screaming redline and handling that will see it outgun some pricier metal

in the turns.

Feature Car | Proton Satria

Text : Hypertune

Photos : Kenny Yeoh @eosguy

From the title and sub, you should have this

entire article gured out already. There’s a

Proton; in this case a Satria, and it’s powered by

a Mivec engine from the Mitsubishi Mirage that

it’s based on.

Furthermore, the interior has been stripped

clean and there must be some suspension work

for it to change direction quickly as indicated in

the sub.

Should we go on then?

Of course we’ll bloody well still write this because

even with the Proton + Mivec recipe as common

as Maggi Mee, creativity and a budget coaxes us

into adding our own touches and ingredients to

the recipe to suit our taste buds.

Take one light chassis, strip it further

to reduce ab and add the engine from

a more powerful version of the vehicle.

The resultant car wouldn’t have broken

the bank and it would go fast in any

direction you point it at

The Satria here is built by Speed Jump Garage

in Klang and the rst thing they did was to rip

out the factory engine and refurbish the bay

with a fresh coat of paint for its new occupant.

Once everything was tidied up, a 4G92 from a

Mitsubishi Mirage was dropped in.

As reliability was the focus here, the engine

was left entirely stock save for a pair of JUN

camshafts that were tted and dialed in with a

pair of adjustable cam pulleys. Spark was given

a little more juice with NGK plug cables igniting

Denso Iridium Racing spark plugs.

On the intake side, a Simota air intake leads the

atmosphere in and a custom Super Race exhaust

manifold channels it out after combustion.

Cooling is improved with a Forged Racing

aluminium radiator and Samco silicone hoses

while a high speed electric fan draws more

cool air through the radiator’s ns the speed up

cooling; especially at lower speeds.

Performance parts from the car manufacturer

itself are often the best and more reliable ones

to t with the simple reason being that they

would have been manufactured with the same

quality as the cars and would therefore t

better. If you can retain the factory warranty as

well, all the better.

So on the tuning side, a RalliArt ECU was tted

together with a Pivot Speed Meter for more

accurate speed readouts and to remove the

pesky 180km/h speed limiter.

Seeing that power levels are near factory, the

stock ve speed transmission was only beefed up

with a full-lock LSD and an Exedy clutch set to

bite harder onto the ywheel and prevent slip.

If there was going to be any cost-cutting in your

build, let it me cosmetic or anything but the

suspension. Never ever skimp on the ride and

handling aspect of your car.

Ohlins is a brand that needs no introduction in the

world of suspension and when the opportunity to

acquire a set for the Satria came about, nobody

needed to sleep on it. Complementing the Ohlins

coilovers and pillowball mounts are a pair of

Ultra Racing strut bars for the front and rear

as well as a custom roll-cage to tighten up the

lightweight chassis and hold the cabin together

in the event of a crash.

Weighing next to nothing, the braking department

can make do without big brake kits. Using the

stock calipers and rotors from the Mirage, Bendix

Metal King brake pads were added. Not only was

the setup more than sufcient, it also removed

a lot of unsprung weight that a BBK would have

brought.

A staggered set of SSR Type-C wheels ll the four

corners with the wider ones up front for more

traction. Sticky Kumho Ecsta V720 tyres form a

balanced compromise between street and track

use.

In the cockpit, there’s nothing much left as most

of the interior was gutted. A Mirage dashboard

and door cards made the transition over from

the halfcut. A Momo Model 02 steering wheel and

RalliArt gear knob offer improved tactile feel for

the driver’s inputs. A pair of Sparco full bucket

seats hold the driver and passenger in place with

TRW safety harnesses.

Lastly, the exterior is spruced up with Mirage

body panels where possible and the addition of

a GT wing on the rear hatch for downforce and

cosmetic cred. The icing on the cake would be

the Ganador side view mirrors that are more

aerodynamically streamlined.

Taking a step back, this Satria isn’t overwhelming

in any way with the mods done to it and while

some may look down on that, the owner

was looking at precisely this as the goal was

something fun that would not break traction and

the wallet easily.
