New England Dragway’s longest
running show returns August
5. The New Hampshire Lottery
Jet Cars Under the Stars event
features the biggest names in jet
racing including Neal Darnell and
his incredible Shockwave, triple-jet
powered Peterbilt truck.
This thundering behemoth is
fastest jet-powered truck on the
planet thanks to three, full size jet
engines producing tens of pounds
of thrust. When the first burner pop
lights up the Epping sky you’ll know
why this is New England Dragway’s
most anticipated show.
While Shockwave is the main
course there’s plenty of appetizers
to feed your need for speed. 300
MPH jet dragsters like the Queen
of Diamond and Beast From the
East are backed up by 250 MPH
jet funny cars including Top Secret
and First Strike. Plus K.C. Jones
returns with his dueling jet trains;
always a hit with the kids. And in
honor of first responders Sam Ives
fires up Tulsa County Heat Wave
Police Funny Car.
Gates open at 3 PM. Jets fire
off at 6 PM and we’ll close the night
with fireworks.
There is plenty of free parking and
every ticket is a pit pass so you can
meet your favorite drivers.
Bring your non-winning New
Hampshire Lottery ticket to the
gate for a $5 discount off of general
admission.
The Name Has Changed But The Show is Still Incredible!
Menard’s Chevy Show Returns for 3 Days in September
Don’t let the name change fool you.
Menard’s Chevy Show still features
all of the thrills and excitement of its
predecessor Super Chevy.
Full tilt drag racing action keeps
everyone’s eyes glued to the quarter
mile. With everything from pristine
street machines to supercharged
entries all vying for the coveted
championship crown.
One of the biggest all Chevy and
GM shows in the country featuring
classics to modern muscle graces
the giant show field.
The automotive swap meet may
provide you with your next project
or that hard to find piece for your
current endeavor. All this and more
make Menard’s Chevy Show a
paradise even for the casual fan.
The expansion to three days in
2017 is due to popular demand.
Fans from all over the Northeast
and Canada asked for more and
New England Dragway delivered.
September 8, 9 and 10 are the new
dates for this year’s Chevy and GM
vehicle themed event.
New England Dragway General
Manager said it was more than fans
calling to express their interest for
an extra day to track officials. “Last
year’s event turned out to be one of
the most popular television shows
on Velocity TV. That, coupled with
feedback from our guests made the
decision to expand an easy one.”
Drag racing has always been
a staple of the event, and this
year’s program promises to bring
out some of the best racers in the
region. There are three bracket
racing categories competing this
year including Super Chevy, Pro
Chevy and Street Chevy. Outlaw
10.5 Index racing returns this year
along with Iannotti Brothers Select
Cars Top Sportsman. And then
there’s the True Street Challenge
that includes a 20 mile run before
three hard charges down the
quarter mile.
Plus, this year’s event will
showcase the hard-charging
supercharged warriors in Pro 7.0
and Pro Comp.
The weekend kicks off on Friday
with a test and tune event that
allows racers to get dialed in for the
weekend. Early birds for the show
categories get to stake out their
spot for the weekend, while swap
meet vendors get an extra day to
sell their wares.
So mark the calendar for
September 8, 9 and 10. Spectator
tickets are available online at www.
newenglanddragway.com.
CHAD
&
New England
Dragway
Team Up For Safety
Safety is the focus August 5, for
the staff from the Injury Prevention
Center at the Children’s Hospital
at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD)
during the New Hampshire Lottery
Jet Cars Under the Stars show.
Partnering with New England
Dragway, CHaD is promoting their
“Safe Choices” highway safety
educational programs.
Special emphasis is on child
passenger safety and teen driving.
If you have a little one you think
is ready for a booster seat, a teen
driver or soon to be teen driver it’s
worth the extra time to stop by to
see what they have to offer.
CHaD’s Child Passenger Safety
(CPS) Coordinator, Julie Dietrich,
will be available to discuss car
seat safety and proper use of
booster seats. To the surprise of
many parents, too many children
are not properly restrained. It’s
not uncommon for parents to be
uncertain about when their child can
safely use booster seats. Improper
use of car seats and booster
seats can present real danger in
the event of a crash. Have your
child try to walk under the child
passenger safety bar. If they can,
it means a booster seat is highly
recommended for them. The CPS
coordinator will have some booster
seats available at no charge.
CHaD’s Youth Operator
Coordinator, Chelsie Hubicsak-
Muldowney, and Highway Safety
Specialist, Howard Hedegard will
be available to provide important
information about distracted
and impaired driving and the
importance of seat belt use, along
with giveaways and educational
handouts.
New Hampshire’s hands-free law
has reduced distracted driving
crashes significantly. Prior to the
law, distracted driving was the
second leading cause of fatal
crashes. It is now number six.
Although this is a big reduction,
there is still room for improvement.
Try the virtual reality simulator to
see just how risky distracted driving
really is.
NHRA Lucas Oil Regional Results
Records and Excitement Herald
Annual NHRA Event
New track and national records are only part of the excitement
accompanying this year’s NHRA Lucas Oil Regional Event at New
England Dragway. The three day event provided even the most causal of
race fans with an memories that will last a lifetime.
Topping the list of accomplishments was local standout Dan Page
when he reset the track elapsed time record with a 5.233 run in the third
qualifying session of Top Alcohol Dragster. That unseated Josh Hart from
the number one position, though Hart went on to defeat Page in the final
round on Saturday night.
Track Newspaper Going Digital
Dragway News Available Online
A major change is taking place for New England Dragway News
subscribers. Because of ever increasing postage costs New England
Dragway will begin publishing its newspaper digitally.
It’s a significant change to a publication that has been in print for nearly
30 years. But, according to New England Dragway General Manager Joe
Lombardo, it’s one that is long overdue. “We’re one of the few tracks
in the country publishing its own newspaper. Many moved to a digital
version and abandoned the printed copy.” The change also gives New
England Dragway to publish more issues throughout the year.
The process of having New England Dragway News delivered to your
inbox is quick and easy. Simply go to New England Dragway’s website
Race Your Ride During Wednesday and Friday
Street Nights
One of the unique factors about
Street Night at New England
Dragway is anyone with a valid
driver’s license can take a shot at
the track. You don’t need to have
all the performance goodies or a
tire smoking monster. All you
need is your daily driver and
a desire to experience the
thrill of putting the go pedal
to the metal.
Every Wednesday and
Friday night men and
women of all ages
converge on New
England Dragway
to feel the rush of
adrenaline of safe
and legal racing
on the same
track as the
professionals
compete on.
Some come
up to race
against
t h e i r
friends
just for
bragging
rights. Others
come to set up a
baseline before they make any
performance modifications. But
most of all, everyone comes to
have fun.
There are a few rules. First, if
you’re under the age of 18 you do
need parental permission. Track
officials can help you navigate that
process. Your car or truck must
have working seat belts, safe DOT
approved tires, working headlights
and taillights. In some cases you
may be required to wear a
helmet and long pants
are required. It
all depends upon
the elapsed time
of your vehicle.
Rules are a
bit different for
motorcycles. Riders
need over the ankle
shoes or boots, a leather
or jacket and a helmet.
If your machine is quick
enough you’ll need leather
pants, as well.
We know the first time out
can be a bit stressful; especially
if you haven’t watched racing
before. Don’t worry. Track
officials can help you understand
the process for making a run.
You’ll learn about the Christmas
Tree, how to read a time slip, and
ways to improve your reaction time.
To learn more call the track at
(603) 679-8001 and ask a member
of our team to send you a Street
Legal Style Drags by AAA brochure.
It will help get you on track to a
season of fun and excitement.
Wednesday and Friday Street Nights are
presented by
AAA Insurance, Tasca Performance,
Meet the Racer
Aidan Baker Making His Mark In Juniors
By Hope Weaver
Aidan Baker was the talk of the
town, known as the nine-yearold
junior racer who had a 0.000
second reaction time at the NHRA
New England Nationals in June at
New England Dragway in front of
tens of thousands of race fans.
With a perfect run, he caught the
eye of Mello Yellow Series drivers
including sixteen-time Funny Car
champ John Force and Aidan’s
favorite racer, Top Fuel driver, Leah
Pritchett.
I caught up with Aidan and his
parents to ask what everyone’s
been wondering: Where did that kid
come from?
Aidan Baker next to his “Cookie Monster” Junior Dragster
Turns out, the junior drag racer
from Cumberland, Rhode Island
isn’t from a racing family; his
parents aren’t even mechanics.
Aidan’s interest in racing came from
a family friend, who Aidan calls his
Uncle, when he invited the family
down to New Jersey to see him
race. By the end of the weekend,
Aidan had made it his goal to get
behind the wheel himself.
Aidan’s dad Brian Baker says he
didn’t know anything about cars or
racing; he can’t even change the
oil on his own car, but he made a
deal with his son: get your grades
up and we’ll try it. Ever since then,
Aidan’s grades have been up and
his parents haven’t been able to
get him out of the car. In his last
five races, he’s brought his Cookie
Monster junior dragster, named
after his first stuffed animal and his
love for cookies, to the final round
three times.
Aidan and his family call New
England Dragway their home
drag strip. “It’s the funnest place
to drive,” he added. Brian has
become Aidan’s crew chief and he
and his wife are hooked and love
seeing how happy their son is when
he’s racing. And while there aren’t
many weekends the Bakers aren’t
racing, when not at the drag strip,
Aidan likes to ride his bike. “I like
to be on four wheels or two wheels,
just not two wheels when I’m going
100 miles per hour,” he smiles.
When asked if he brings his
friends to watch him race and what
they think, he replied like a pro, “I
only usually bring friends (to the
track) on test and tune days.” Other
days, he’s training. But he admits,
“Most of them are jealous.”
Aidan posted a 0.002 second
reaction time during this weekend’s
test and tune and is determined
to be behind the wheel as much
as he can. When asked where he
wants to go with this racing thing,
he replied, “I want to drive top fuel.”
Aidan’s father Brian watches as he
gets ready for another run at New
England Dragway.
When the late Vinny Napp created the Junior Dragster at his Englishtown, New Jersey track back
in the early 90’s no one was really sure what affect it would have on the sport of drag racing. As it
turns out Vinny’s idea, which many dismissed as a novelty that wouldn’t last, has had a significant
impact on the growth of drag racing. Many of today’s sportsman competitors got their start in Junior
Dragsters. It has also had a lasting impact on the professional ranks, too. A look at today’s roster
of NHRA National Event competitors reveals many who first piloted a half-scale car down their local
drag strip, including Erica Enders who is a two-time world champion.
