Nestled a few blocks in from the

coast in Malibu, CA, this cozy home

by Kate Lester Interiors found its

initial inspiration at the beach. The

overall aesthetic, says LA-based

Kate Lester, was to be relaxed and

elegant, with a sense that the decor

had been thoughtfully collected

over time. The aesthetic needed

to be effortlessly chic to fit the

client—a successful entrepreneur,

fitness celebrity and outdoor sports

enthusiast with three children--but

more importantly, those white sofas

and natural fiber rugs needed to be

durable to withstand sand, sun, and

salt water. The resulting space is

one that is eclectic and casual, and

inspired by the sea, but not overly

beachy—“not a seashell in sight!”,

says Kate—earning it the description

“curated coastal” by the design team.

“My current obsession

is the combination of

bleached oak accents,

vintage indigo textiles, and

washed out Turkish rugs.”

“Being in Hermosa Beach,” explains

Kate, “we frequently get requests

for a neutral, beach-inspired look.”

Rather than interpreting this too

literally, says the designer, and

“heading straight for the white coral

or photograph of a lifeguard tower,”

she prefers to challenge herself

to find new ways to infuse a fresh

shore-inspired vibe and push clients’

definition of “coastal decor.”

A LITTLE

SOMETHING

SPECIAL...

In keeping with the designer’s

concept of thoughtfully

collected decor, there are many

unique flourishes around every

corner, including:

PROJECT FAVORITES

“There are so many! I am totally

in love with the Venetian plaster

walls, as well as the reclaimed

wood elements throughout. I think

the varying textures and depth

created by the contrast of these

elements adds a whole other level

of sophistication to this simple

palette.”

“There is a luxury in

simplicity and we are

constantly straddling

the line between scarcity

and perfection. It’s so

challenging to hit that on

the mark, but I think we

did with this project.”

DESIGN CHALLENGES

“I think the main challenge we faced

was how to keep the simple rustic

elegance of the house itself, while

adding coastal accents and bespoke

items. We wanted each piece to be

meaningful and intentional, without

the space feeling overly staged.

The end result of this hard work

and collaboration is a palette that

is a true testament to our client’s

love of the outdoors, traveling...and

living life to its fullest.”

BEHIND the LENS

TIPS FROM A PRO PHOTOGRAPHER

Q+A with Alyssa Rosenheck

SOMETIMES THERE'S

NO TIME FOR A FULL

PHOTOSHOOT... THAT'S

WHEN WE ALL TURN

TO OUR PHONES FOR

THAT PERFECT INTERIOR

SNAPSHOT. ANY ADVICE

ON GETTING DSLR-

WORTHY SHOTS FROM A

PHONE CAMERA?

This is one of my favorite

questions! It’s a common

myth to think you have

to have a big expensive

camera to get the job

done, but most often the

best camera to have is the

one in your pocket. For

designers, it is less about

the gear and more about

one’s visual acuity and

attention to detail in your

day-to-day work.

TRY SHARING...

››

Fabric swatches

››

Client presentation boards

››

Mid-construction

progress shots

››

A little behind-the-scenes

content on install day!

This will communicate your

current inspiration while

also conveying your brand

to your audience. One of

my favorite “game changer”

apps that will help you is

“A Color Story”. Combining

this tool with a strong

emphasis on composition

will help you increase

content and help enhance

your visual currency to

truly reflect your brand and

personality as a designer

WHAT ARE THE IDEAL

LIGHTING CONDITIONS FOR

AN INTERIOR SHOOT?

Any skilled photographer

will be able to work with

all lighting conditions. I

turn the lights off! I find

it necessary for an image

to be the most accurate

representation of a room

as possible, to yield what

the natural eye sees. I am

known for my bright and

crisp images so it always

surprises new clients when we are

starting to photograph the house and

I am methodically flipping off all the

light switches. Is it counter intuitive?

Yes. But it yields the most natural

look of the color of the room and all

the beautiful things within it.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS A MUST FOR

DESIGNERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS

ALIKE. ANY TIPS FOR WHAT MAKES

A REGULAR PIC INTO AN INSTAGRAM

STANDOUT?

My biggest piece of advice is…

consistency, in two ways:

››

Consistently post everyday. Pick a

time that works for you and your

busy schedule and press share.

››

Be consistent with the look and

feel of each image. This will create

a consistent and clean theme on

your feed. Consistency will help

you communicate your businesses

brand to your audience.

FINALLY, WHAT DO DESIGNERS

NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FOSTERING

A CREATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH A

GREAT INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHER?

All interior photographers work

differently, just like all designers

work and conduct business in varying

ways. It’s important to look at an

interior photographer as a member

or partner of your team. And just

like any member of your business,

it is vital that they add value, are

communicative, honest, transparent,

and passionate about communicating

your brand as designer while being

authentic and passionate about their

art. My clients have become some of

my dearest friends, and it makes the

success that much sweeter when you

are working alongside people who you

respect and adore.

For creators, consumers and corporations, the beginning of 2018 will

kick off a year of monumental shifts set to impact design, retail and

industry practices. Future consumers will expect products with purpose,

immersive environments in the home and in stores and the freedom to

be, do and buy when and where they please. This July, AmericasMart hit

the reset button on design, taking a look ahead to 2018 with four distinct

themes created by trend definer WGSN based on the idea of “The Great

Reset: Redefining How We Live, Design and Do Business.” A select group
