PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
President Antonio V. Fernandez, 2017-18
Greetings Fellow Rotarians:
The Club Assembly last Thursday was a success
. Our plans, projects and budget were
fully discussed. Now , It is up to each and
everyone of us to do our part in making the
year a success. I know we will do it. I want to
thank Chair Malou dela Cruz and all of the
Rotary Anns ,headed by Ann President Angie
Dael for the successful Feeding Program and
Balik Eskuwela in St. Johns School in Tabako.
I also want to thank Chair for the Rotarians ,
PVP Tony dela Cruz and all who participated
for a job well done.
We will again implement the last Balik
Eskuwela project for the year in Gusa. I
learned from Chair Ching Sarraga that this
might be rescheduled to the 1st week of
August because of the unavailability of the
venue. If this pushes through, I would like
ask my fellow Rotarians to support this project.
On Saturday 1:30p.m. , August 5 , we will
have our Fireside Chat and Fellowship at PD
Tito and Girlie Mora’s residence. This will be
FOA (Free of Assessment ) . Please invite
your prospective recruits and inform them
to save the date. Do not also forget to invite
your wife to this activity as the Anns will
also have their own fireside.
As reported to me by our TRF Chairman ,
PDG Manny Along , we hit our target for the
month of July. A total of $5,700.00. The
club wants to thank PAG Luigi Sarraga for a
becoming Major Donor . The club also wants
to thank the contributors who are as follows
:
PAG Luigi Sarraga $ 2,900.00
PDG Manny Along $ 1,000.00
Dir Leony Quicoy $ 600.00
PVP Popo Juarez $ 500.00
Rtn. Tex Legitimas $ 500.00
PP Ian Nacaya $. 200.00
In the District affairs , DG Linda Deleste has
stressed the need for all of us to enroll in
Rotary Club Central . We hope to be able to
schedule a time for this enrolment. Sec Neil
and PSec Mike Mendoza can help guide us.
Rotary International has already sent us our
Club Invoice. This is the statement of Account
on how much we need to pay R.I. for
this semester and hopefully , Treasurer Ariel
Ceniza will be able to settle this before the
end of this month. (See President’s, p. 8)
Feeding the
Severely
Wasted Children
of
Baikingon
By PD Nasalli Cornelio Salava
T
he 100 chosen severely wasted
pupils of Baikingon Elementary
School were given nutritious meal by the
CDO Rotary Anns, after the Water for Life
Project Turn-Over to Ms. Emerita Labis, Elementary
School Principal last July 3, 2017 in
Bgy. Baikingon, Cagayan de Oro City.
The Department of Education defines
severely wasted children as those who are
very thin for their height, while wasted children
are those who may not as worse off,
but will be if not taken care of. The Anns
who raised funds for this feeding project,
served the nutritious meal and encouraged
the pupils especially the mothers to bring
the children to school with a full stomach.
“They can make backyard gardens in
their homes or even here in school and
plant vegetables like, malunggay, garbanzos,
kamote, okra, eggplant and alugbati which
grows anywhere in our country. These are
nutritious vegetables that they can serve to
their children.” says Ann Mina Silava.
The pupils feasted on chicken, rice,
vegetables (mongo, kamote, alugbate) and
juice. While served hot the parents were
thankful for reminding them to pay attention
to the nutrition needs of their children.
They went home with their children assuring
the Rotary Anns that they will improve their
children’s nutrition so they will get out of
being severely wasted pupils.
Are You Aware?
UNICEF reports that as many as 3.4 million children in
the country are stunted (short for their age) and more
than 300,000 children under 5 years are severely wasted
(thin for their height) concentrated in Regions IVB,
ARMM, Eastern Visayas and Bicol Regions. Children
who have severe wasting—also known as severe
acute malnutrition or SAM—are nine to 12 times at risk
of dying.
The 2016 Global Nutrition Report ranks the Philippines
among the top 40 countries in the world when it comes
to wasting, at 7.9%.
The UNICEF Global Nutrition Database ranks the
Philippines 10th in the world in the number of children
under the age of 5 who are moderately or severely
wasted.
President's, from p.4
Finally , I enjoin everybody to support our big
project ,” SEAMLESS” on August 12 . Your
registration and attendance will be most
appreciated. We also are asking our members
to help solicit so that the project will be
able to sustain itself. For any suggestions,
please see, Dir Gus Rodano , the chairman.
Mandela & Rotary
by PS Mike Mendoza
L
ast week, July 19, millions of people
around the world honoured
the memory of Nelson Mandela in an event
that encourages people to continue his philanthropic
work.
In 1995, Rotary International pursued Mandela’s
support to eradicate polio in Africa.
Mandela helped and launched the “Kick
Polio Out” of Africa campaign in 1996-97. In
recognition of his vital work, Rotary presented
the Rotary Award for World Understanding
to Mandela in 1997, then Rotary's
highest honour. Mandela donated the
award's $100,000 prize to the Nelson Mandela
Children's Fund. When he retired from
Yes, July 19 is Nelson Mandela
Day - the day where
communities rally together to
pay tribute to Mandela's life
and legacy. This year would
have been his 99th birthday.
Many of us know that Nelson
Mandela was an activist and
former president who helped
bring an end to apartheid in
South Africa, a system of institutionalised
racial segregation
that lasted from 1948 to
1991.
As a member of the African National Congress
in the 1940s, he led peaceful protests
against the oppressive regime in power that
formed a deep racial divide in South Africa
at the time. Mandela was imprisoned for
his actions for nearly three decades until his
release in 1990, when he went on to become
the first black president of his country,
forming a multi ethnic government to
help bring peace to the country.
politics in 1999, Mandela devoted his life to
championing peace and justice in South
Africa and around the world until his death
in 2013.
This week is all about remembering the
work that Nelson Mandela did throughout
his life, and thinking about how we can continue
his legacy. Before his death, Mandela
asked that the younger generation continue
his work to make the world a better place
for everyone.
ANNS’ CORNER
By Ann Pres. Angelie Mae
C. Dael
A
renowned orchestra group was
rehearsing under a highly renowned
music conductor Sir Michael
Costa, for one of its major recitals.
Hundreds of artists, playing various instruments,
performed as one, following the directions
given by the music conductor.
Halfway through one such session, the piccolo
player in the orchestra thought, “What
difference does my piccolo make amidst so
many instruments here? If I stop playing,
nobody will even notice it!” So he kept the
piccolo close to his mouth, but did not play
it. Within moments, the conductor cried,
“Stop! Stop! Where is the piccolo?”
The able music conductor could sense the
missing sound of a single piccolo among a
hundred other instruments. The musician
realized that every single part of a symphony
has its own part to play to make it successful.
No performance is complete until
we all play our individual parts to the best of
our abilities!
This short story lifted from the book “Snacks
for the Soul” of JP Vaswani affirms the importance
of each role in an organization.
Such is true with the Mother Club, no role is
small or insignificant when we speak of
what we need to achieve in this Rotary Year.
Let us not turn our backs when we are
called upon to help in any way we can.
Next week, the Rotary Anns will have our
second General Membership Meeting and
we hope to see newer faces mixed with
those who regularly join us. We are a vibrant
mix due to the diversity of our backgrounds
and ages. August 3 promises to be
fun-laden as we will adopt the fiesta theme
in time for the city’s annual celebration.
Where else are the Rotary Anns needed?
Keep posted for the final details of the Feeding
and Balik Eskwela Program at Gusa Sunshine
Day Care Center spearheaded by PP
Ching Sarraga. August will again be a busy
month as we have our Fireside Chat and
Fellowship on August 5 at Rotarian Tito
Mora’s residence. SEAMLESS follows on
August 12, and the Anns are called upon to
assist as the Secretariat. We appeal for everyone
to help in our “Tabang sa atong mga
Sundalo” project. We are aiming for a
needs-based project, thus let us not solely
rely on our own resources but also tap into
our respective circle of friends to source
what our wounded soldiers need the most.
This is the least that we can do for these
brave men who have taken bullets and sustained
injuries in the Marawi conflict. Camp
Evangelista’s hospital has a constant flow of
the wounded thus our help is essential.
We need each other so let us all play our
vital part.
By PS Mike Mendoza
Editor-in-Chief
2017-2018
G
ood noon fellow Rotarians, I am
Past Secretary Mike Mendoza --
your new Editor-In-Chief of our
newly “remodeled” Kagay-anon Bulletin. To
be honest, I am still confused and surprised
that I accepted this job that it took time for
me to write this editorial piece. My apologies.
With no background on newsletter
writing and lay-out, I have to do a crashcourse
on open source desktop publishing
just to get things going. Though with little
hesitation- I accepted this job offered to me
by PAG John Mark Sarraga. PAG White is
always a good mentor, even during our Jaycee
years. The guy has always been the
“rock” of this club and there is no doubt
you will get his unwavering support if he
asks you to do something. So I guess
confidence in him brought me here.
beyond and use this medium to shed more
information about Rotary’s six Areas of Focus.
This means that our bulletin will have
more “social and environmental” awareness
topics to it, aside from the messages and
local activities we share. Our lovely Anns
have also agreed to help us with articles
that will showcase their respective monthly
projects and activities.
Record shows our bulletin has been accessed
and viewed over a hundred times
through our official website and our Facebook
pages. Quite an impressive stat since
we had this bulletin posted online just a
week ago. This could be an opportunity for
us to promote our club and Rotary International
to the “outside world”. But of course,
your participation will be a big help to our
group. Since I am a “noob” on this endeavor,
I am so willing to accept contributions.
Rest assured that I will take your works seriously
and together with you, will do anything
to put this “greatest” club on top.
There are things in life that are strange,
and for me, this is one of them. Or
maybe, it is just my dedication to this
organization that made me willing to
take the risk to be your Editor-in-
Chief—fingers crossed.
Our bulletin this year will be quite
different from the past. Today’s coverpage
and article that went with it says
it all. As my team agreed, we must look
