Komani scientist
in SA’s Top 200
FORMER Komani resident Dr Zikhona
Tywabi-Ngeva, who is a lecturer at
the University of Kwazulu Natal, has
been included in the Mail & Guardian
Top 200 Young South Africans in the
category Science and Technology.
Ngeva grew up in Ilinge and
matriculated at Hexagon High
School.
She furthered her education at the
Durban University of Technology and
obtained a degree in analytical
chemistry and a doctorate in the
same field.
Former principal Kate Webster said
she remembered Ngeva well.
“She was quiet and wore her
uniform with pride. She was one of
the early matriculants who trusted us
while we had no history of producing
great results in matric.”
Webster said she was thrilled at
N g e va ’s success.
“It is the belief and dedication of a
student which determines success. I
am proud of her and her contribution
to society and the community.”
Ngeva said the honour of being
included in the top 200 Young South
Africans made her want to change
the lives of young people, especially
those from rural areas and around
Komani.
“I deal mostly with first-year
students. I have observed how those
from rural areas battle to cope with
the language while handling their
new environment.
“South Africa has so many
opportunities for everyone, especially
the youth. I wish the youth would
open their minds and not allow their
backgrounds to limit them and to
become determined and driven.”
She said she used social media to
help students with their selection of
courses.
“I urge the youth of Komani and
surrounding areas to get in touch
with me via Facebook: ZicoTN;
Twitter: @nadatywabi; Linkedin: Dr
Zikhona Tywabi.”
One of the people who nominated
Ngevu for inclusion in the Mail and
Guardian list is Dr Euvette Taylor,
who is a lecturer at the Durban
University in the field of medicine.
“Anyone can relate to her. She
makes mistakes, she laughs and she
apologises, plus her academic
achievements have not gone to her
head. Instead she has remained
humble and a people’s person.”
Her track record at the university
has counted towards her making the
list. As a black woman she is one of
the few who holds a doctorate in the
field of chemistry and for me it was
something special for a woman to be
involved in the field of maths and
science.”
Ezibeleni land occupation goes
ahead despite council warning
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
A
NYONE who tries
to remove us will
burn, is the
message by a
group of people who have
illegally occupied land in
Ezibeleni after Enoch
Mgijima Local
Municipality (EMLM)
executive mayor Lindiwe
Gunuza Nkwentsha, in a
council meeting on July
20, stated that those
found guilty of such an
offence would be
removed and arrested.
The Rep reported last week
(“EMLM warns on land grabs”
July 21) that Gunuza
Nkwentsha had indicated that:
“The council had never
decided that any land must be
given or be for sale, plus
whoever gets land illegally, will
have that land taken, their
shacks will be demolished and
they will be arrested”.
Despite this stern warning, a
group of Ezibeleni residents
continues to build shacks on
vacant land next to the
Ekuphumleni informal
settlement, also called the
Highway. Two shacks have
been erected while divisions
for plots were clearly visible on
the site when The Rep visited
the area on Monday.
The Rep reporter met with a
group of about five people who
are members of a committee
representing a community
wanting to occupy the land.
“We read from the The Rep
that our municipality wants to
remove us and that they do not
know who issued the land
illegally [sic], but we want
to correct them. No one
issued land to us [sic]. We
held a meeting as the
community of Ezibeleni
and decided that we are
going to build on this
vacant land.”
The group, who declined
to give their names, said the
councillors from the area were
in the wrong.
“The RDP houses in
Ezibeleni in Ezithandeni have
less then 10% of people who
live there that are originally
from Ezibeleni. We do not
know who these people are,.
when last did the municipality
or the department of human
settlement build houses for
young people in Ezibeleni?
“Secondly there are
government employees, police
officers and even lawyers
among us who also want this
land. Police officers do not
qualify for an RDP house, nor a
bond and rent in Komani is
expensive. We want to have
our own houses where we can
raise our children and to be
able to tell the children to go
close the gate and to lock up
and to have a stable home. We
want a place we can call
home.”
‘We just want them to
talk to us so we can
work together’
One of the residents, Loyiso
Dyonasi, said a shack that had
been erected was apparently
demolished. He said people
were now guarding the shacks
and some had donated
groceries.
Another man, who wanted to
remain anonymous, said the
aim was not to fight with the
municipalit y.
“We are not saying that we
want a war. We just want them
to come and talk to us so we
can work together, instead of
them howling [at us] in public
meetings. We will not leave
this land.”
The man claimed that they
had lists, some which were
shown to The Rep, with 8 000
signatures of people who want
to live on the occupied land.
“We are not afraid to go to
jail. No court interdict is
effective without the second
party going to court so we are
not afraid. We are fighting
for our constitutional right,
plus we have about 10
lawyers who are willing to
fight with us.”
A resident from the
Ekuphumleni settlement,
Thabisa Jongqo,
interviewed by The Rep,
was supportive of the
H i g h way ’s residents, saying it
might help to curb crime.
EMLM spokesman Fundile
Feketshane said, “We will
arrest whoever has built
houses or shacks illegally. The
council is busy finding a legal
way for people to get plots and
there is a court interdict which
will be used to arrest anyone
who does not move from that
land now.”

Ilinge police under radar
Residents angry at lack of village law enforcement
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
ISSATISFACTION is
brewing among Ilinge
Dresidents who believe
the police in the village are
not fulfilling their mandate.
The Rep recently reported
that a Komani policeman,
warrant officer Makhaya
Copiso, was shot dead outside
the Ilinge police station by a
colleague on June 25
(“Policeman shot dead” June
30). According to an
eyewitness, Copiso had
wanted to report allegedly
drunk police officers who had
chased his vehicle.
The police station was
allegedly closed, however.
Social activist Mxolile Mali
said this week the police in
Ilinge were failing the
communit y.
“Sometimes their phones
work and other times they do
not. The vans are not visible.
People are being robbed of
their grant and pension
monies.”
He said the community
wanted provincial police
commissioner Major-General
Liziwe Ntshinga to visit the
area.
Resident Vuyani Mani said
on July 3, a youth was beaten
up by community members as
he was a suspect in a crime.
“The police could not come.
They said they did not have a
van and only one police officer
was on duty. This incident
happened early in the morning
and they arrived much later,
after the ambulance had
arrived.”
Mali said station
commander Captain Khangeli
Ngcofo had not been assisting
residents in their pleas for
Man falls to his death
from roof of store
THE Komani police have
lodged an inquest into
the death of a man who
allegedly died while
trying to escape from
the police and security
guards following a
break-in at a local store.
Police spokeswoman
captain Namhla
Mdleleni said the police
were called to the scene
on Saturday night
following a break-in. On
their arrival, they
managed to arrest a
32-year-old man.
Another man fell from
the roof while allegedly
trying to escape. He
died on the scene.
Mdleleni said police
were also investigating
a charge of business
robbery. – Rep reporter
inter vention.
He said when Copiso was
shot by an Ilinge police
member, community leaders
had to reason with people who
were angry with the Ilinge
police.
“After calming the
community we organised
prayer meetings at the police
station as a means to unite
people. We then handed a
letter requesting the presence
of the police and the safety
and liaison district manager
Sizwe Skwebu at a meeting.”
He said Ngcofo did not
attend the planned meeting
with the community on the
Monday and neither did any
other police delegate.
Skwebu said Ilinge had not
been included in the annual
community mobilisation plan
against crime for the 2017/18
y e a r.
“However the issue of crime
in Ilinge has been raised with
us and the department will
respond to it. We have plans
to meet with the station
commander and the
community policing forum to
work together in forming a
programme which will benefit
the people.”
Skwebu said he had not
attended the community
meeting as Mali called him the
day before, telling him that he
had not received any response
from the stakeholders who
were also invited to the
meeting,
“I then waited to be
informed of the next
scheduled meeting.”
Despite various telephonic
requests for comment to
Ngcofo since last week, no
response had been received at
the time of going to press.
Work on dam leak continues
WORK continues on a leak from the
Waterdown Dam which is currently
the main water source of the Enoch
Mgijima municipal area.
Residents have been
experiencing water outages over
the past couple of weeks following
the discovery of what is said to be
a substantial leak in the pipeline.
The Waterdown Dam level is
currently at 60.6% according to
figures provided by the Department
of Water Affairs. The Chris Hani
District Municipality this week
informed residents that water
needed to be used sparingly, with
work continuing yesterday.
Residents in Ezibeleni, Komani,
Whittlesea and surrounding areas
have been affected by the outages.
songs, in a programme of
two parts. The first was
formal and operatic: dark
suit and bow-tie, red-covered
stool and flowers,
microphone and music
stand. Thompson introduced
the five pieces, composer,
story, setting; and Kula sang
comfortably, exuberantly in
operatic style, with
resonance in his voice and
power in his delivery. His top
notes are magic, clear and
musical. The Puccini wa s
impressive. Verdi’s Rigolet to
could have had a more
appealing nuance, and the
Mozart which followed
needed a lighter treatment.
But on the whole the recital
was magnificent, and the
audience was loud in
exclamations of “wonder ful”.
The second half of the
programme was more
relaxed – our singer now in a
blue suit with a red tie and I
felt that he was more
naturally at home with this
selection of songs. He was
best, in my opinion, when he
was dramatising the song,
sitting, standing, moving, for
then his delivery was
modulated to the scene.
Thompson accompanied
Kula in some of the items. In
the main he used a backing
tape and in a Xhosa song he
was accompanied by a
colleague. Pieter Roussow
managed the lighting and
Sharon Parker the sound, but
when Kula turned to an
electric keyboard the sound
was out of balance. So too,
unfortunately, in the closing
Time to say goodbye, when
he was joined in singing by
Sharon Parker, the voices
were out of balance. He
could have done away with
the mike, for one could make
out the soft soprano voice
filling the sound.
Kula has an excellent and
impressive voice, clear and
musical in his top notes,
dramatic and powerful. This
voice needs guidance and
training – for delicacy and
lightness. Stutterheim’s
audience was grateful and
impressed. It was a show
worth putting on.
THE Boere versus Rooinekke
golf championships at the
golf club ended with Nicky
Flanegan claiming the
longest drive (ladies) and
Graham King the longest
drive (men). Sean Richter
was nearest the pin. The
Rooinekke won with 735
against the Boere score of
675 .
STERKSTROOM – The
farming community
was saddened to learn
that Tom Hartley,
formerly of
Rhebokfontein, passed
away in Port Elizabeth
on Saturday July 22, in
his 85th year, after
several weeks in
hospital there.
His parents, the late
Ray and Edna Hartley,
moved from Toise River
to Sterkstroom when
they bought
Rhebokfontein in 1936.
Tom matriculated at
Queen’s College after
which he completed a
diploma in agriculture
at Grootfontein before
joining his father on
the farm.
In the early sixties he
married Irene and they
had two children, Ray
and Shivaun. Tom and
Irene farmed at
Rhebokfontein until
they sold it in 1994 and
retired to Cradock.
While he was on the
farm, Tom was
involved in the
fa r m e r s ’ a s s o c i at i o n
and served on the
committee for some
years, also doing
several terms as
secretary and later
chairman.
He was a keen
bowler and also played
bowls in Cradock
where he was
greenkeeper for
several years. While
they lived in Cradock
Irene passed away
and, a few years later,
Tom moved to Port
Elizabeth.
RICKIE Creese,
formerly of Balmoral in
Sky’s the limit for Anitha
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
A
GRADE 11 KwaKomani pupil,
Anitha Madolo, was the top
overall performer at the
Siyandiza/Young Falcon Aviation
Programme, which was hosted in
Komani over the past few weeks.
Defence and Military Veterans
Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula
last weekend congratulated Anitha on
her achievement.
Anitha was also recognised for
being the best academic and drill
female Young Falcon at the Thobi
Kula Indoor Sports grounds on
S at u r d ay.
Grade 10 KwaKomani pupil Athi
Makapela was the best academic
male Young Falcon, with Siphamandla
Dondolo of Ekuphumleni High School
in Whittlesea the best male
par ticipant.
Siphosethu Ciyani, who is in Grade
10 at WB Rubusana High School in
Ezibeleni, was the top female achiever.
A total of 142 participants in grades
10 to 12 participated in the camp,
hosted by the South African Air Force,
in collaboration with Denel, the Chris
Hani District Municipality (CHDM)
and the Department of Education.
Mapisa-Nqakula said many South
African pupils who wanted to work for
the defence force were unable to do
so due to poor results in maths and
physics. This had propelled the
department to groom pupils for the
next entry into the SAAF.
“The Eastern Cape has been
experiencing a low pass rate and poor
performance in these subjects. The
resolution was to assist pupils and
identify those who have the potential
to join the South African Air Force.”
The minister said the Free State
matrics performed well as a result of
the programme last year.
The African Management Services
Company (Amsco) assisted pupils
with 177 bursaries this year. Denel
also funded some pupils.
The SANDF has various exchange
programmes abroad and a group of
pupils are in Cuba and Russia
receiving training as doctors,
engineers, technicians and pilots.
“The defence force seeks people
who listen and are disciplined. When
you look at this calibre of youth who
show dedication, commitment and
passion, you can see that the defence
force has a bright future.”
‘BEE must focus on skills’
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
SKILLS were the basis of economic
transformation, economic development MEC
Sakhumzi Somyo said at the Black
Management Forum’s state of economic
transformation session at the Queens Hotel
and Casino last Friday.
Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba was
unwell and unable to attend the event.
The MEC said the majority of South
Africans were black, which was “why the
ANC agitated for a posture which sought to
direct the country to have bigger margins in
assisting the black population which was
through Black Economic Empowerment
[BEE].”
WELL DONE: Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, centre,
honoured Anitha Madolo from KwaKomani Comprehensive School for being the top
achiever in the Young Falcons programme, with South African Air Force chief
lieutenant general Fabian Msimang at the right
Picture: ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
He said critique of the BEE policy should
be done while acknowledging that the
country had progressed.
“The measure we should take is to look at
what is happening on the Johannesburg
Stock Exchange [JSE] to see how many
Africans form part of the registered JSElisted
companies. When you do so you will
see that there is still justification to propel
black economic transformation.”
In order for growth to take place the focus
should be on areas of the economy that do
not favour the black population, he said.
Government needed to act decisively to
take the country out of the current recession
and needed to practice strict fiscal
discipline.
Speaking on industrialisation, Somyo said
the province was, at times, let down by
people who were in the forefront of big
project deals.
“On the gas and nuclear project of the
province, we are currently taking a number
of black professionals to receive intensive
training in China as engineers.”
BMF Western Cape chairman Andile
Nomlala said: “If black people can not build
an institution that lasts for generations, they
can never compete with the world”.
Universities should be developed in the
province which had the interests of black
communities at heart. He called for a
different application of BEE policies which
would reach the targeted group.
THE REPRESENTATIVE 28 July 2017
EDITORIAL
OPINION
Who are our
p o l i t i c i a n s?
WHY would anyone want
to become a politician?
If you have never
thought about it, the current
political landscape in South
Africa and the shenanigans
which form part of the
parliamentary discourse on a
regular basis could force you to
consider the thought.
Is it for power? Is it for the
money? Could it be for the
altruism associated with the
opportunity of serving one’s
people? Or a deep sense of
loyalty and patriotism towards a
country and the will to make it
bet ter?
Cynicism when it comes to
politicians and their role in
society is increasingly evident.
People are losing faith in
promises, many of which are
not fulfilled, but delivered with
intensity on political platforms.
People are losing respect for
politicians who become
involved in physical fights over
parliamentary benches or who
become involved in
mudslinging matches on social
media.
Some are dying for political
positions – quite literally so –
in South Africa. People are
being killed by those in search
of lucrative jobs while those in
positions of power use these to
accrue wealth. A
generalisation? Absolutely.
There are many politicians
who strive to serve to the best
of their ability, but these are
often not the ones who make
the media headlines. The ones
who do are mostly those who
speak the language of hate and
discord or who shout the
loudest or who dress the best.
Thus, politics for all the wrong
reasons.
Why embark on a career in
politics which is fraught with
perception and expectation,
often beyond what a mere
mortal can deliver? I would like
to think, possibly naively so,
that politicians start off with
empathy and passion. Some go
wrong along the way and are
blinded by greed. Others may
become frustrated with a lack
of progress and become radical,
doing whatever they feel they
need to do to effect change, but
often without bearing the brunt
of their actions.
I still have faith in many of
South Africa’s politicians and
their motives. I still believe – or
want to believe – that the
majority of politicians are in it,
not for themselves, but for us all.
That is possibly why the
recent calls for action against
anyone found to be involved in
state capture, as has been
widely claimed over the past
few months, can be seen as
positive. If these calls are made
for the benefit of the country as
a whole, and not for the careers
of a few, then politics in our
country still has a chance in the
hands of good men and women.
I hope so.
Do not turn away
HOW many of you turn away as
soon as you see an article or hear
news on the radio or watch news
on television about the Guptas,
state capture and corruption?
How many say, “Here we go
again” when they hear of a
politically-motivated killing and any
such-related act of violence?
The Gupta e-mail leaks have
been a treasure trove of filth and
insidious skullduggery going on in
the political corridors and
state-owned enterprises. Not a day
goes by without further revelations
that show the depth of the rot.
This weekend
another of the
many politically
m ot i vat e d
a s s a s s i n at i o n
victims,
R ay m o n d
Mhlaba
Municipalit y
speaker Thozama Njobe, will be
laid to rest in Alice.
She was aware that her life was
in danger and, despite this, went
about her job in the best way
possible. This and many other
similar funerals have become the
norm across the country and by the
looks of things, the bad guys will
not give up without a fight.
Hounded ANC MP Dr Makhosi
Khoza has had to resort to having
bodyguards and has not slept in
her home for a while because of
threats to her life. Her crime has
been calling for the leader of her
party and president of the country,
Jacob Zuma, to resign and for
speaker Baleka Mbete to allow a
secret ballot during the noconfidence
vote against Zuma.
Her party has swiftly instituted
disciplinary proceedings against
her, charging her with “illdiscipline”.
The hearing is scheduled for
September 10. Who knew they
could act so swiftly when it came
to things like these?
Rule 25 in the constitution of the
ANC deals with “management of
organisational discipline”.
25.6 Disciplinary proceedings
against a member shall not: 25.6.1
Be used as a means of stifling
debate or denying members their
basic democratic rights.
The ANC has its work cut out to
convince us that this action against
Khoza does
not do exactly
IN
TOUCH
... with Phumelele P Hlati
this. They
practically
threw the
whole of Rule
25 at her. She
must have
struck a
ner ve.
I wonder if she would be the only
person to fall foul of the myriad sub
sections of this rule if they were
really interested in maintaining
discipline?
What does all this do to the
psyche of our nation? It has the
effect of demoralising the
populace, numbing people to the
extent that when further revelations
are made, people will shrug their
shoulders and move on.
“Scandal fatigue” from the
populace is expected and, as a
result, the perpetrators become
more brazen. This stems from the
belief that nothing will happen to
them and that people will all soon
tire and move on until another
scandal breaks.
We dare not.
DEVELOPMENT IS NEEDED: I feel sorry for the
people from the villages in the Hewu area
who have to travel so many kilometres on
very bad gravel roads to Whittlesea for
shopping.
Our small town is so unfortunate and
development is something foreign to this
Sometimes you have to travel to Komani
from Whittlesea, paying a R60 return taxi
fare just to go to the bank to deposit R50 for
someone or to make inquiries.
Why can we not have banks in Whittlesea?
It is time for the Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipality to attract investors to
Whittlesea as we are tired of spending a lot
on transport to Komani.
WEZA of Komani writes: The Super Rugby
competition was previously regarded as the best
rugby competition in the world after the Union and
League Rugby World Cups. It was comprised of 15
teams and was played on a round-robin basis.
The top-placed teams vied for the Super Rugby
champion title, but ever since the introduction of
the conference system it has become skewed.
According to this system, the top team of each
conference automatically qualifies for the playoffs.
The problem is that the top team in a particular
conference may have fewer points on the log than
2nd and 3rd placed teams in another conference.
The teams thus proceeding to the playoffs need
not necessarily be the top performing teams – a
skewed system indeed!
Hopefully the competition will have another,
better format in 2018.

THE REPRESENTATIVE 28 July 2017
ROUND&ABOUT
Popular educator retires – again
Edkins ends career in
governing body post
CHUX FOURIE
OT many people get to
retire twice, but that is
Nwhat Richard Edkins has
done.
First he retired as principal of
the Girls’ High School seven
years ago, and now he is taking
permanent leave of his post as
deputy provincial manager:
Eastern Cape at The Federation
of Governing Bodies of South
African Schools (Fedsas) .
Richard’s parents were
farmers in the Dordrecht district,
and after a few years of
schooling there, he was packed
off to Selborne in East London as
a boarder.
“I spent eight wonderful years
at Selborne and I attribute much
of what I have achieved in life to
the lessons I learnt there. I had
fantastic teachers and still feel a
sense of deep gratitude towards
them. My first leadership
position was being elected
captain of the Selborne U13A
rugby team and one of the
highlights in my life was being
made Custodian of the Key
[head boy] at Selborne.”
After school he went to
Rhodes to study towards a
BComm degree and a teacher’s
diploma.
He started teaching at Queen’s
in 1973, where he became head
of department. In 1988 he took
up a principal’s post at then Fort
Beaufort High School.
In January 1990 he took up a
principal’s post at GHS and
retired at the end of April 2010,
when he turned 60.
Richard says: “Of my 38 years
of teaching, GHS was by far the
RICHARD EDKINS
most rewarding. I loved teaching
the girls and would not even
need one hand’s worth of fingers
to count the number of girls I
found impossible”.
After retiring he was offered a
position with Fedsas primarily to
assist/train SGB members in
areas such as policy
determination and the
implementation thereof.
He says his life’s highlight wa s
meeting Maureen when they
were just 15 and she was a
boarder at Clarendon.
They have been together since
they started dating in May 1965
and have been married for 44
years. They have three children
and five “gorgeous
grandchildren”.
And now that he has ‘finally’
retired?
“I want to spend more time
with Maureen and the
grandchildren. I still have quite a
few cars to restore; my hobby is
carpentry and I want to pursue
more of that.”
They do not plan to leave
Komani at present as they are
very happy and have some great
friends here, although they have
a home in East London and will
probably relocate there when
they are older.
The reason the couple decided
to make a home in Queenstown
initially was the fact he was
offered a teaching post at
Queen’s by headmaster Tom
Higgs. Maureen too was struck
by the cleanliness of the town. It
was said that all birds flew
upside-down!
Most people know about
Richard’s love for restoring old
cars. He has about 11 but is also
intrigued by sandstone buildings
and wishes South Africans were
more conscious of our heritage
and preserved these stately old
buildings.
He really enjoys working with
wood, especially exotic hard
woods like teak, oak, beech and
ash, and enjoys all the trades
required to restore old cars.
He even attended a sheet
metal course in Stellenbosch to
hone his metal-shaping and
panel-beating skills, which he
describes as “the most
worthwhile course I have ever
done, including any of the
subjects in my degree”.
Asked about changes, Richard
said when he took over at GHS it
was a school that had a
complement of 360 girls. In his
second year the first girls “of
colour” were admitted. For 140
plus years it had been a school
of excellence.
“GHS remains one of the top
schools in South Africa, a
beacon of hope,” he says.
A really bad memory was
when School House burnt down,
but that did not affect the
school’s performance.
“Going out for a meal with
Maureen is a highlight and if the
Springboks win that’s nice. If
they lose too bad, try harder next
time. I’m actually quite an
uncomplicated person, though I
dare say there are some who
would dispute that.”
Whatever lies ahead, he
concludes: “I strive to live by five
values – fairness, respect,
integrity, servant leadership and
excellence. I am strongly
opposed to the idea of
perfection! I try every day to be
better than I was yesterday.
“If life is worth living, and it is,
it must be lived as excellently as
possible.”
SIVENATHI GOSA
A FORMER KwaKomani
Comprehensive School pupil, Yolisa
Magibile, 24, has published her first
book, Word Your Worth.
Magibile, who now lives in
Bloemfontein, is an evangelist and
motivational speaker.
“I am passionate and
compassionate about helping
women to be on the cutting edge
when it comes to their lives.
“The book is a spiritual challenge,
an exercise of faith and warfare for a
woman who wants to silence the
words of the enemy,” she said.
Her love for writing started in high
school where every day after school
she would improve her vocabulary
by reading the dictionary.
“I remember walking to school
and when I got tired, I would sit
under a tree and read the dictionary.
“All I wanted to do was to improve
my English so that I did not
embarrass myself when I was with
my peers from multiracial schools in
my area.
“Little did I know that reading
would become a habit and eventually
imprint my love for writing.”
Magibile said the main difficulty
she faced while writing the book
was the typing of the manuscript
while she did not have access to
young writers who could help to
mentor and motivate her.
“Hence I ended up
self-publishing.”
She said the book was for every
woman who was going through
difficult times and was about to give
up on life.
LOCAL cartoonist and artist Kaya
Mazule has won the MTV Breaks X
MTV Shuga Comic Book
competition, which offered him the
opportunity to create a comic strip with
five other artists.
The series competition was scouting
for creative illustrators and colourists to
translate the multi-award-winning TV
drama, MTV: Shuga Down, into an
original comic book.
Mazule said they had to draw one of
the characters from the series.
He drew a guy called Reggie who
struggled with his identity.
“I won because I did a free hand
drawing, while other illustrators used a
tracing method via a computer.”
MTV Shuga: Down is an educational
youth drama series that follows a group
of young people in South Africa as they
go through the struggles of reaching
adolescence and is aimed at youths
aged between 15 and 18.
Mazule said he wanted to use comic
strips to address social issues which
affect the youth.
“Comic books have a huge fo l l o w i n g
THE REPRESENTATIVE 28 July 2017
Trial exams
sure to test
winter school
success
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
DISTRICT department of education assistant
director Madoda Ndembe says the results of this
year’s matric winter schools programme should
be evident during the September trial exams.
Two residential winter schools were offered,
with pupils who lived far away sleeping over at
the Gali Tembani Centre and Maria Louw High
School.
“Gali Tembani had pupils from Ndlovukazi,
Siyaphakama from Sterkstroom, Joe Slovo from
Molteno, Manzezulu and Ngubengcuka from
Machibini, Lingelihle from Ilinge and a few pupils
from Queen’s College.”
Pupils from Whittlesea, Zolani, Nompumelelo
and Hewu attended sessions at Maria Louw.
In Mlungisi winter schools took place at
Luvuyo Lerumo High School, which also
accommodated pupils from John Noah High and
Nkwanca High, and KwaKomani Comprehensive
School.
WB Rubusana High School hosted Bulelani
High School in Ezibeleni.
Ndembe said: “We will see the effectiveness of
the winter schools during the September trials.
Other assessments to prove if the sessions were
a success will be through the tests that pupils
wrote, based on the work they learned over this
period.”
KwaKomani Comprehensive School deputy
principal Cozoma Tyalimpi said the district
department of education had originally organised
the lessons for KwaKomani and Ndlovukazi High
School pupils and had an attendance rate of
between 80% and 90%.
They were also told not to turn away pupils
from other schools, with pupils flooding in from
Dordrecht, Komani, Tsomo, Indwe, Burgersdorp
and even some from a Durban school.
SIVENATHI GOSA
FORMER Hoërskool Hangklip
pupil Chantelle Pretorius, 24, is
set to represent the Eastern
Cape at the Miss Deaf South
Africa (MDSA) pageant.
Pretorius graduated from the
University of the Free State with
a Bachelor of Education degree,
and is currently teaching in
Barkly East.
“My inspiration for entering
the competition was to show
people with hearing disabilities
that we are also capable of
showing off our talents and to
not give up and lose faith.
“They should not be afraid of
making mistakes because that is
the way to discover our
capabilities.”
Pretorius said Hangklip had
offered her much support in
dealing with her hearing
impairment. She particularly
paid tribute to the support by
her teachers.
The Mzansi Skills Village
organises the pageant with chief
executive officer Leviena Smit
saying it was one of its legacy
programmes.
“The legacy programme
serves to amplify the voice of
the deaf in the form of an annual
MDSA pageant which enables
the finalists to experience a
transformational journey through
leadership development,
personal development and skills
development programmes,” Smit
said.
“Since 1995, the Miss Deaf
South Africa pageant has given
inspiration, opportunities and
support to young deaf women.
“Over the past three years, the
competition has expanded and
has grown into a cause that
enjoys multi-channel media
attention and assistance from a
few successful organisations.
“The contestants will be
judged based upon their beauty,
self-confidence, leadership and
talent. They also have to
organise fundraising events, and
the Miss Deaf SA finalists have
to make their own African
headpiece to fit into our theme
this year, An African Dream
Night,” Smit said.
Pretorius said she had
received huge support for the
pageant and was excited about
the opportunity.
“I feel privileged and give all
the glory to my Heavenly Father
for keeping me under His care. I
am blessed for the amount of
support I have received from my
family all of these years.”
People can vote by sending a
message, MDSA02, to 47439
and they can also follow the
MDSA Facebook page.
Hoërskool Hangklip celebrates 75 years of excellence
Message
from the
principal
WELCOME to everyone who has made
the effort to be here, especially the
former principals and our guests
from Aliwal North. Our grateful thanks to
everyone who has been involved in any way
with the organisation and preparations for
these festivities.
I have wondered what makes people return
to a reunion after many years. What forms a
person? How did we become what we are?
There can be many reasons, but I believe the
following three are the most applicable.
The place – Komani and Hangklip High
School. God brought us to this place where
we were formed and rounded by the
involvement of teachers
Friends – pictures are just the extras to the
pieces of ourselves we leave in the hearts of
others. I believe that this weekend everyone
will laugh at some story involving “us”.
The Potter – we are all just material in
God’s hands and a reason for being together
is to thank Him for what He has created and
for this place and these friends. It is great to
be part of our story.
Blessings to every pupil, teacher, parent
and friend of Hangklip. Enjoy the day.
s 75 years of excellence
Congratulations on
auspicious occasion
HANGKLIP is in its 75th year. Hearty
congratulations on this auspicious
occasion.
The foundation of any country is the
education of its children. My child has
been entrusted to me by God and I
must educate him in a well-balanced
way, in all facets of life.
Someone wrote that the only value
the past could hold is that a person
should be able to take courage from it
for the future. The past should never
be a holiday resort where one can
camp, but rather a filling station
where one can get fuel for the future.
Those who are young must enjoy
their youth and fully live those young
days. Education is the best precaution
against old age – an enrichment in the
good days and a haven in adversity.
Balance is the secret of a happy,
healthy life, but only you can
determine what balance means to
you. To achieve balance you must
decide what is important to you. Keep
your eyes on the stars and your feet
on the ground. The future is full of
challenges.
My greatest wish is that Hangklip
will overcome any unforeseen
challenges and that it will be an asset
to our community, our region and our
country, growing ever bigger and
st ronger.
Gratitude is close to satisfaction.
Together with all who were at
Hangklip, who are now at Hangklip
and who will become part of Hangklip
in the future, we bow our heads and
hearts before the Almighty and
greatness of our Father who has led
us through crises and storms, who
has comforted and cared for us and
under whose wings Hangklip shelters
firmly and safely.
Live in hope.
TOMMIE SMOOK (Connected with
Hangklip, January 1966 to March 1986)
Best memories of
professional career
THE best memories of my
professional career are
undoubtedly those I
gathered at Hangklip High
School. Therefore this
school, its development
and successes will always
remain a priority in my life
and my prayers.
Hangklip is a unique
school because of its rich
traditions of the past and
the respect it commands in
educational circles, but
also because of its
character and the quality
of its teachers, leaders and
communit y.
May these festivities
bring together all the power
of human potential, ideals
and dedication that have
produced outstanding
results in the past, and still
lay the foundation for future
development and success.
A previous prefect body
described the school thus,
“Here Klippies are polished
into diamonds”. My prayer
is that these ideals will
remain true every day in
the lives of pupils and
teachers.
The status Hangklip has,
in all aspects of education
in the Eastern Cape, has
been confirmed. With the
dedication and zeal of
every one of you, this
esteem in which our school
is held will live on and be
extended.
I wish the principal, staff,
pupils and management
committees the best future
imaginable and hope that
your association with this
school will enrich your life
in an exceptional way.
JAJ VAN ZYL (Principal,
1 9 9 3 -2 0 1 1 )
Proud record of
excellent service
HANGKLIP brings
pleasant memories to
me.
In 1992, my last year
as principal, we
celebrated the school’s
half-century, a school
which was established in
1942 as a result of the
desire of
Afrikaans-speaking
people to have their
children educated in
their mother tongue.
Through the years the
school has rendered
exceptional service,
especially in the
academic sphere. Many
former scholars have
entered the professional
world with great success
and rendered a valuable
contribution. On the
sporting front, the school
has also produced men
and women who have
represented their
province and their
country with distinction.
The school has been
served by excellent
teachers. I am sure they
are still appreciated by
their former pupils.
It is the wish of my
wife and I that, at the
attainment of
three-quarters of a
century, the school will
continue to follow its
educational goals with
the same zeal and
success as it has in the
past 75 years.
May the school go
from strength to
st rength.
PRIMEPROPER TY
Do your homework before you buy
IF you’ve been
renting for a while
and are ready to
take the next step to
buying your own
home, you need to do
your homework and
know exactly what
you are getting
yourself into.
Dr Simphiwe
Madikizela, head of
special projects at
FNB Housing
Finance, says many
first-time buyers get
blinded by the
excitement of owning
their own home and
overlook the
importance of
research, which ends
up costing them more
in the long term.
Apart from the
home loan
application and
registration process,
there are a number of
other important
factors that one
needs to consider
when owning a home:
Future needs – av o i d
basing the decision
of buying your house
only on your current
needs; rather take a
long-term view and
consider if the house
will still cater for your
fa m i l y ’s needs in the
future. For example, a
two-bedroom house
may be perfect for
newlyweds but could
soon be too small as
the family expands.
Amenities – while
you may get a
bargain when buying
Important things to consider for first-time home owners
a spacious house
outside of town, you
need to consider
factors such as your
work premises,
medical centres and
schools for your
children etc. It may
end up costing you
more money and time
to travel on a daily
basis.
Free-standing or
sectional title –
when renting, you
don’t often put as
much time and
money into
maintaining the
property, depending
on the agreement
with your landlord.
When you own the
property, you will be
responsible for
making sure that the
property stays in
good condition at all
times.
On the other hand,
when buying a
townhouse, you will
be liable for a
monthly fixed cost for
levies, rates and
taxes, over and above
the mortgage loan
instalment due to the
bank.
Buying an old house
– buying an old
house for a
reasonable amount in
a good
neighbourhood may
not be such a bad
idea; however, what
THE REPRESENTATIVE 28 July 2017
THE HEWU area is in
mourning after the death of
community architect and
church leader Sandi Kwaza
at the age of 75.
Kwaza died suddenly in
Upper Shiloh Village in the
early hours of Sunday.
His death sent
shockwaves through the
Hewu district, where he has
been actively involved in the
church and in community
upliftment projects.
Queenstown Methodist
Church (Queemec) steward
Obituary: Sandi Kwaza
Mthunzi Tukwayo said
K wa z a ’s death had come as
a surprise. “He was quite
active and showed no signs
of frailty, despite his age. We
thank God for having graced
us with a great man. Not
only was he great within the
church, he was a great
leader in the community.”
Kwaza was a widely
respected church leader and
health practitioner. His
influence in the Hewu and
Komani districts was felt
through his dual roles as a
Methodist preacher and
health education lecturer at
Hewu Hospital and Frontier
Hospital.
He devoted himself to
various community
upliftment projects,
including serving on the
Disabled youth project needs financial aid
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
CHILDREN from the Ilinge
Christian Skills to the Disabled
Youth project are in dire need
of assistance.
Children from the project
recently gathered to celebrate
the 67 Minutes for Madiba
campaign, with Protea
Superspar providing groceries
to make the occasion special.
Managing director Nelisa
Ndema said the project was
started in 2012 after parents
appealed for help, saying that
their disabled children were
being victimised and abused.
“The aim of the project is to
empower disabled children
with skills that will allow them
to survive on their own. Just
like other school children they
attend their classes from
Monday to Friday, they are
trained in skills like sewing,
knitting, literacy (reading and
writing) and how to make
things like mats, bars of soap
and vases.”
Judy Stemela, 19, who lives
in Emaplangeni in Ilinge, said:
THANK YOU! Parents, pupils and teachers of the Ilinge
Christian Skills to the Disabled youth project celebrate the
donation of groceries during the 67 Minutes for Madiba
campaign
“We help each other – it feels
like family and I have people I
can rely on.”
Ndema said when the
project started, the families
had agreed to contribute R200
monthly towards the running
of the project – this had,
however, since dwindled to
n ot h i n g .
This project has its fair
share of challenges. Ndema
elaborated on some of the
issues she has to face.
“I have been feeding the
children from my own pocket. I
also fetch some of the children
[from home] because some
are in wheelchairs.
“My previous car was
damaged and I have to pay for
petrol. I have been asking for
assistance from various places
like the municipality,”
REACHING OUT:
The Rep, with
Megasave and
groceries to three
local families for
the 67 Minutes
campaign. From
she said.
Protea Superspar became a
full-time sponsor in March and
the Nonesi Mall joined as a
part-time sponsor.
Protea floor manager Bruce
Burmeister said: “We opened
an account for the project so
they are able to buy groceries.
Community involvement is key
for any business. It is the
responsibility of all businesses
in Komani to help initiatives
like this in the community”.
Ndema said while some of
the children received
government grants, they
arrived at school dirty and she
had bought tooth brushes for
all the pupils.
She said she had since had
requests from people resident
in Cofimvaba and Lady Frere
to help with their children.
“The community does not
treat disabled children fairly.”
She said she wanted to start
a boarding school for disabled
children and thanked the
sponsors for their help,
appealing for any further aid
that was available.

Renault Duster proves an
ideal SUV family vehicle
F
OR those seeking an
affordable yet capable
and versatile family SUV,
the Renault Duster
Model presents the perfect
package.
With its rugged muscular
styling, array of advanced
features, impressive fuel
consumption, remarkable
off-road abilities, comfort,
space, and competitive price
tag, it’s no wonder the Duster
continues to be a formidable
contender in South Africa’s
B-SUV segment.
The Renault Duster’s local
popularity is clearly evident in
the sales achievement of over
12000 units since its 2013
launch. The Duster has not
only proved its toughness on
SA’s unpredictable roads, but
also within a volatile economic
c l i m at e .
Four years down the track
this sleek yet powerful vehicle
remains a solid SUV offering,
on so many levels.
From the outset, the Renault
Duster boasts an imposing
robust exterior, designed to
conquer South African terrain.
Available in two drive types,
4x4 and 4x2, the Duster affords
you the choice of urban and
off-road driving, as well as two
distinct trim levels – the
Expression and the
Dynamique.
With the 4x4 Duster
derivative, the reassuring
appearance is matched by its
remarkable off-road
capabilities. It boasts an
elevated ground clearance
(210mm), and excellent
approach and departure
angles, which when coupled
with its intuitive 4x4 control
system, allows it to master all
on and off-road conditions.
Adaptability to all situations
is further enhanced through
the three transmission modes
available. 2WD allows for the
engine torque to be distributed
to the front wheels, whereas
Lock Mode allows torque
distribution to all four wheels,
and, Automatic mode enables
automatic distribution over the
four wheels dependent on grip
conditions.
Aside from its bold and
rugged looks enhanced by its
trendy 16-inch black alloys,
ultra-modern headlamps and
rear lights with striking satin
chrome branded roof rails, the
Duster offers substantial
features ensuring form
with substance.
Standard
ultra-convenient features
across all derivatives
include electric windows,
drive-away lock, rear-park
sensors and
cruise-cont rol.
The upper-spec’d Dynamique
Model offers additional
intuitive technology that
ensures maximised driving
comfort, namely rear parking
camera, 7-inch MediaNav®
touchscreen on-board
navigation and optional
leather. The Duster is the
perfect family vehicle with
comfort and convenience a
standard feature, with its
ample cabin space and 475l
boot space, substantially more
generous than the norm even
in segments above.
The versatile Renault Duster
is undoubtedly the perfect fit
for drivers with diverse needs,
historically offering a choice of
two transmission modes,
namely:
The 1.6 16v 77Kw naturally
aspirated petrol engine
(Expression and Dynamique
4x2 models)
The 1.5 dCi 80Kw turbo
diesel engine (Dynamique 4x2
and 4x4 models).
This sophisticated engine,
inspired by Renault’s Formula 1
This sleek yet powerful vehicle
remains a solid SUV offering
on so many levels
expertise, delivers on both
power and performance, yet its
fuel efficiency is unparalleled
from only 4.8l/100km (NEDC
Combined Fuel Cycle).
In keeping with consumer
needs the Renault Duster
range has now been further
enhanced with the introduction
of the new EDC (Efficient Dual
Clutch) Model.
The EDC is a 6-speed
automatic gearbox with two
clutches, for optimised
efficiency with the ideal gear
selected via an electronic
control unit.
This “dr y” dual clutch
system combines the comfort
of an automatic and the
responsiveness of a manual –
offering flexibility and fuel
e f f i c i e n c y.
The EDC is mated exclusively
to the globally acclaimed
punchy 1.5 dCi engine with an
output of 80Kw, 250Nm,
delivering a remarkable fuel
consumption of only
4.8l/100km, and Co2
emissions at just
126g/km.
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
ONE of the traditional
powerhouses of Border region
schoolboy rugby, Queen’s
College, has not featured in
the Top 20 school rugby
rankings this year.
First team coach Clinton
Loest took time to speak to
The Rep on rankings and
rugby at school level.
“Schoolboy rugby has
almost become a professional
set-up. In the past players at
school level just played for
fun, but now there is a lot of
pressure on the boys. To me
personally and the team, those
rankings do not count as
much as improving each
individual player.”
Loest said if a player
improved to the level where he
could pass comfortably under
pressure and make good
decisions, it was more
valuable than getting into the
top 20.
The Queen’s first team,
ranked at 59 on the SA school
rankings, had an up-and-down
start to the season, but was
given a boost when they beat
Wynberg (99) and
Rondebosch (53) at the Cape
Schools festival in the Western
Cape.
“We beat Dale College at
our reunion and that was
obviously a big plus for us.
“We went through a bit of a
patch where we had a couple
of losses and then we arrived
at exam time, where we had a
couple of weeks’ break before
heading for the Cape Schools
fe st i va l . ”
Queen’s College was the
only Eastern Cape school to
return unbeaten from the
fe st i va l .
With five games left for the
Kudu and great depth of
character displayed at the
Cape Schools, Loest said
lessons learnt since the start
of the season would stand the
team in good stead for the
remaining fixtures.
“The break between the
final game of the term and the
Cape Schools week did us a
lot of good because it gave me
time to work with players
i n d i v i d u a l l y.
“The mental approach
heading into the game and
understanding where we were
in the season and being
honest with ourselves in that
we have not achieved what we
wanted to, are important.”
He said team discussions
had focused on forgetting
about outside influences and
focusing on the team.
“We ’ve said – let’s do it for
that we would like to finish on
a high note.”
Queen’s will host Kingswood
College from Grahamstown
this weekend.
“Kingswood has adopted a
Dale style of play. They love
running the ball wide. On our
side we have the privilege of
having big forwards. I will be
expecting quick balls out of
the ruck from our boys.
“It will be a bruising
encounter. The forwards will
create space for my backs to
run at them hard.”
The first team game will
start at 2.30pm at The Rec
AFTER almost a three-month break,
Komani racing drivers were looking
forward to round four at the East
London Grand Prix circuit recently.
Unfortunately Derek Boy could not
partake in the historic saloons
section due to mechanical problems
that occurred during the warm-up.
Alec Gudmanz was given the
opportunity to race his brother
Darron’s V8 Chev Can Am and he
said it was an awesome experience.
As the old saying goes, "There is no
replacement for displacement".
Results in historic saloons class A
were: 1st Darron Gudmanz and 2nd
Ryan Boy and in class C 1st Alec
In the modified saloons class D,
nine competitors took part, with Alec
Gudmanz placed fourth and Sean
Soccer league to
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
YOUTH in the age groups U12, U13, U15
and U17 in Ezibeleni will have an
opportunity of learning more about
football in a new league.
The league will help equip the young
players with skills on how to be
referees and linesmen while playing in
the Ezibeleni Sthimela U13 and U15
league and a schools U12 and U17
The league was started by the
Ezibeleni South African Football
Association (Safa) Zone for three
reasons, chairman Sandile Mata said.
“There is an U19 league Local
Football Association (LFA) throughout
South Africa. Safa aligned itself with
the municipalities in 2006 and
developed 52 regions with the local
the leagues.
He said getting a competitive U19
league together on the local front had
been difficult and therefore it was
decided to start such a competition.
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
THE Seven Stars football club will
combine youth with experience
during the upcoming final of the
M ay o r ’s Cup in Komani.
The Stars have a big pool of
youngsters in their starting 11.
Captain Jose Bosch said he was
proud of the team’s achievements to
date in the tourney.
“They managed to blend and gel
smoothly with the senior players. We
have our own style of play that is
unique to Seven Stars FC and with
the blend of youth and senior players
in our squad, we aim to win this
tournament.”
Coaches Vernon Jackson and
Benjamin Geduld said Seven Stars
had two squads, the first team and a
Johannesburg as representative of the
Eastern Cape.
The ABC league, a provincial
structure for U23 players, was also in
existence, as was the National First
Division League, also for U23s.
It was decided to start a league to
cater for younger pupils, with the
schools league for the U12 and U17
group in urgent need of sponsorship.
Safa Ezibeleni Zone secretary
Mawethu Nzayo said the league would
start in August and end in October but
from next year would last from
February until October.
Local businessman Gqalane Sthimela
is the sponsor for the Sthimela league.
Sthimela said it was not his first
involvement in sponsorship of Ezibeleni
initiatives. He has also been involved in
sponsoring music events.
“I want to assist in order to help the
children. I do not want them to be
involved in crime or drugs, so that is
why I decided to sponsor the league.”
Mata said the leagues would have a
referees committee which would enable
the children to referee matches in the
future or become linesmen.
second team for the U18 age group.
Both competed in the cup under
different names, with the second
teams losing in the semifinals to Try
Again FC, which was beaten by the
Seven Stars first team.
“We fought hard in a competition
that started with 20 teams. We beat
the big guns of Komani Valgas FC
who are the regional champions of
the SAB league and this gave us
enough confidence to believe that we
can beat any team in the final.”
Among the teams that will
participate in the final are Madrid FC
representing Ezibeleni, Young Minds
FC representing Ilinge and Seven
Stars representing Komani.
The date and the venue of the
finals are not yet known.

MAXWELL LEVINE
AFTER a couple of weeks of rest, the last
round of rugby league fixtures is set to
take place tomorrow.
There are vital clashes between clubs
at the bottom of both the Super and
Premier league.
The Super League has already been
clinched by Old Selbornians, but it is at
the bottom where there is a two-horse
race for survival between Cambridge and
Ocean Sweepers. Both teams are sitting
bottom with only four points. They face
second-from-bottom Ready Blues away
and will need to win this match and take
The new Kia Picanto – vibey, modern and fun
IF YOU’RE looking for a vehicle
which will allow easy navigation
through the busy traffic of Komani,
the new Kia Picanto is sure to put a
big smile on your face, writes Sonja
Raasch.
It may be compact but the
Kia Picanto boasts most of the
technological advancements of its
bigger brothers in the Kia range –
and boy, does this small car have
soul!
It’s the perfect vehicle for urban
living and its bold exterior design
inspires confidence in its abilities.
Whether it is mom dropping the
kids off at sports practice or the
student rushing off to class early in
the morning – the Kia Picanto has
a vibey, trendy feel that will ensure
that both driver and passengers are
transported in the lap of luxury.
I loved the sleek black and silver
interior (with even the brake, clutch
and petrol pedals having these
finishes, it is obvious that not
even the smallest detail has been
overlooked by Kia in this design).
There is ample leg space for both
driver and passengers in this fivedoor
hatchback which is equipped
with air bags for your safety.
The driver’s cockpit conveniently
displays all the necessary information
for any trip with the additions of
Bluetooth Aux, a USB port and
MP3 connectivity a plus for anyone
wanting the benefit of up-to-date
technology at their fingertips.
It is an easy drive and maneuvered
well through the streets of Komani
– even during the rush hour. Parking
advertising feature
is an absolute pleasure with the
parking-assist feature ensuring
that the days of driving aimlessly
around parking lots, looking for
a suitable gap, are sure to be a
thing of the past.
The Kia Picanto I took for a
test drive was a deep orange
which was rather unusual but
looked phenomenal. The boot is
narrow but deep with ample place
for luggage and the five year
warranty is a huge plus.
All in all, I’d recommend this
vehicle to anyone looking for
a ride which is smooth, goodlooking
and modern. I had fun in
the Kia Picanto – I am sure you
might like it too.
Breakers player hurt in Cup clash
MAXWELL LEVINE
WHAT was deemed to be the
clash of the year with the two
most decorated sides in Komani
– Old Collegians and Breakers –
going head-to-head in their quest
for the HPJ Cup, ended in a
disappointing fashion over the
w e e ke n d .
The match was abandoned late
in the second half with a
Breakers player ending up in a
serious condition in an East
London hospital.
The week leading up to the
match at the Mlungisi stadium
was filled with excitement for the
supporters of the two teams
whose rivalry stretches over
many years. What made the
encounter even more interesting,
was the fact that four former
Breakers players had crossed the
floor to play for the opposition. A
full stadium was expected and
the rugby supporters of Komani
did not disappoint.
Confusion and disappointment
erupted in the second half,
however, when the match was
called off with Breakers
deservedly leading 28-12. The
referees and the two clubs could
not agree on a call for a red card
for an alleged late tackle by an
OC player on a Breakers player.
The incident is currently being
assessed by Border Rugby based
on a report by the referees.
Although both teams were
prepared to continue playing, the
match officials were not
prepared to risk the safety of the
players. With respect to the
process that might follow and
the family of the injured player,
Sapho Ntisa, further details and
a report will be provided once
WE CAN DO THIS: From left, Breakers executive member Mxolisi
Vanda, Breakers manager Soli Manzi and coach Bassi van der
Walt at the Breakers versus Old Collegians derby over the
Border Rugby have finalised their
findings. The early match was,
however, as explosive as
expected. After the initial
exchanges the match was in the
balance for the first 15 minutes.
Both teams pressed hard but it
was OC who opened the scoring
through winger Craig Pijoos after
good interplay between the
backline players. Chawielle
Hartnick missed the conversion
and Collegians took a 5-0 lead.
Breakers then scored three
unanswered tries with fullback
Nkunku Mbusi lethal with the
boot, having a 100% conversion
rate throughout the match. First
the nippy fullback crossed over
before Lonwabo Ngculu also put
his name on the scoreboard. The
onslaught was completed by
Milo Nqoro and Breakers ended
the first half with a dominant
21-5 lead.
Matters were to worsen for the
Collegians side as Thulani
Rengqu scored Breakers’ four th
try after the interval and the
hosts raced to a 28-5 lead.
OC made a couple of changes
and it was no surprise when
Loyiso Ngculu crossed over for a
converted try for Collegians to
reduce the deficit. Unfortunately
the match was then abandoned,
leaving the hordes of supporters
in dismay.
