Welcome to our very first issue of Coolalinga Central magazine!
Our new free quarterly publication aimed to keep you up to date with
fashion trends, sales, promotions and events happening in and around
our Centre. Since the successful grand opening of the new Coolalinga
Central on Saturday 13th May 2017, the response from local residents
has been overwhelming and we thank you all for your support and hope
this magazine benefits your shopping experience in our centre.
We are amidst the Dry Season, where there is always something
happening around Darwin. From the Race Season to the Darwin Festival,
and Father’s Day fast approaching, there is so much to do! Our first
edition focuses on providing you with ideas for fashion, food, services &
products to see you through this fun season.
But it’s not all about the shopping! In this feature, we let you know a
bit about the different elements that make Coolalinga Central & how
Coolalinga got its name. We also caught up with Shannon Rusca, our
very own Southern District AFL Coach and a clever business man, to talk
about his life wearing different hats every day. A down to earth young
gentleman who owns a classic race car, Shannon, we are impressed!
Special thanks goes to Neil Dyer Racing Team for allowing us the use
Course. Race horses are not easy to work with, and without Neil’s
assistance we would not have been able to achieve such fantastic
photos. Not to forget the incredible crew behind the scene. Robert
Corbin, our excellent and experienced photographer from Dragonfly
Worx. Abbey Reedy, our professional Passarella model. Teri Roussos, our
very talented makeup artist. This team brought nothing but their best to
showcase what Coolalinga Central has on offer.
We hope you enjoy reading the first issue of Coolalinga
GIRLY TIPS
HOW TO KEEP
NAIL POLISH LAST
LONGER
1. Avoid getting any polish
on your cuticles, which
lifts the paint from the nail
and leads to chipping.
2. Don’t cut your cuticles,
but you can push them
back using cuticle oil
and an orange stick or
a pusher tool to prevent
paint from getting on
them.
Fejioas - Feijoa, also known as pineapple guava, is a
delicious fruit of South-American origin. Feijoa fruit is an
excellent source of antioxidant vitamin-C. 100 g fresh
fruit provides 32.9 mg of this vitamin, about 55% of DRI
(daily recommended intake).
Dragon Fruit - Dragon fruits have a surprising number
of phytonutrients. Rich in antioxidants, they contain
vitamin C (equivalent to 10 percent of the daily value),
polyunsaturated (good) fatty acids, and several B
vitamins for carbohydrate metabolism, as well as
carotene and protein.
Custard Apple - The bark of custard apple contains
astringent properties and tannins, which is utilized
for making herbal supplements. The fruit contains
compounds like acetogenin and alkaloids that reduce
the risk of cancer and renal failure.
BILTONG is a much loved
South African dried meat
snack. Spend any time in
South Africa and chances
are you will stumble upon
someone selling Biltong.
Its history can be traced
back over 400 years. It
began (similar to jerky) to
preserve meat for future
consumption. Biltong is
very high in protein, low
fat, low carbohydrates
and often low in sugar.
Biltong has great
- INTERVIEW -
15MINS WITH
SHANNON RUSCA
SOUTHERN DISTRICT AFL COACH
Q: What did you want to be when you grow up?
A: I wanted to be just like Dad and be a heavy plant
operator. I also loved sport and was very much into my
athletics as I enjoyed watching the Olympics. My idol was
Carl Lewis. As a family we would also watch the local NTFL
as my older brother was playing for Southern Districts FC.
I saw good fun, good friendship and the opportunity to
make new friends from other schools playing the great
Australian game. AFL took over my passion and became
my dream, I told myself I wanted to play AFL.
Q: What were you like in high school?
A: I was very quiet in class as I was too scared to do
anything naughty. I was only active during the recess and
lunch break. There was a game we use to play and it was
crossed between Basketball/rugby and keepy off (killerball).
The idea was to still score at your end of the court but the
rules of engagement was there were no rules, just score in
your basket! The game was eventually banned from school
after a few injuries and other outcomes from a physical
game.
“Encouragement
and fun is my motto
to my kids”
In celebration of our debut issue of
Coolalinga Central magazine, made
for local by local, we would like to
feature some of our local talents. One of
the talents on our list is Shannon Rusca
(37), a former professional AFL player
who now leads our very own Southern
District Team, a father of five and an
adventurous business man. We got
Shannon to talk about his career and
what is it like being a proud father.
Q: Tell us about being a coach instead of a player?
A: Coaching is great, it’s about giving back to the sport
which has given me so many opportunities in life. We can’t
learn all this knowledge about our game and not to pass it
down to the up and coming young stars. It is very rewarding
watching others learn new skills and putting them into
practice.
It was quite difficult transitioning from player to coach.
I went straight into coaching the Premier league team
whom I had been playing with the season prior, so giving
instruction to young men the same age took some getting
used to. I also found getting 40-60 different players with
different skills and playing ability understanding one game
plan/style a good challenge. I had to learn very quickly
how to mould players around certain game plans whilst
getting them all playing as one unit instead of individuals.
As a player I didn’t have to worry as much, just play for
laughs. Look ...I have lost all my hair from coaching…With a
grin.
14 coolalingacentral.com.au

- INTERVIEW -
As a coach you are not only their coach, you become
much more than that. This is the greatest part of
coaching for me.
Q: What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever done for you?
A: I have not encountered any weird thing done by a
fan. One of the most memorable thing is an older lady
would cook us nice warm scones with jam and cream
every Friday after training. We always looked forward to
Fridays on those cold windy wet nights.
Q: What is your biggest accomplishment in your sports
career?
A: Making into AFL is a dream come true. My number
one’s are winning both the southern districts senior grand
finals. I can’t separate them.
Q: What one or two things do you currently do in your
training that are keys to your success?
A: Skill work, pressure work and good clear instruction.
Communication is key. I am big on skill work, keep it
simple method, and don’t try over complicate it. The
game has certain skills so let’s be the best at them.
The game has changed a lot over the years but it still
evolves around 3 phase, when we have the ball, when
the opposition have the ball and when the ball is in
dispute. So we work hard on the fundamentals of the
game, we have to be great at kicking, handballing,
marking and decision making. I am very determined to
see people reach their full potential, being on field or off
field.
“Nothing comes easy, nothing
is handed to you, you want
something, work hard to make
it happen.”
Q: Any advice to all the young players?
A: Always listen to your coach no matter what level.
Follow your dreams, never give up and there’s no such
thing that you can’t
Q: Now, tell us a little bit about your family?
A: My family has been the biggest influence and support
in my life’s journey. Mum, Dad, brothers and sisters have
been great pillars for me. Leaving home at a young age,
while having the continuous support from them allowed
me to pursue my dream. It also made the transition from
leaving my friends and family behind in Darwin that much
easier, it was simply amazing.
Q: What is the biggest satisfaction of being a father?
A: Coming home from work seeing them smile changes
your whole day in a single moment.
Q: Kids say the darndest thing, what was the funniest
question ever asked by your children? And what were your
answers?
A: Why do you have big belly and why don’t you have lots
of hair on your head like us…bald (according to them), I
smiled, I was stuck for words
Q: Is your father an inspiration to you? What is the best
advice he has given to you that you live by.
A: Definitely! In all parts of my life. I look up to him, listening
to all the inspiring stories he has to tell. He is a very hard but
fair person, he had to be hard to get through the struggles
that confronted him as he is from the stolen generation. He
is a successful person from hard work and desire. He is a
very honest person, calls a spade a spade. Dad’s advice:
Nothing comes easy, nothing is handed to you, you want
something, work hard to make it happen.
Q: What would you like to tell your father this Father’s Day?
A: Thank you Dad for all you have done for me, your
continued support has never waived. I believe without you
and all your values you have instilled in me, I wouldn’t be so
grounded. So thank you for everything and I now can carry
all those values onto my children.
Q: What would you like from your children this Father’s Day?
A: Good morning cuddles in bed.
Q: What would be your reaction if your kids said they want
to take up Rugby league instead of AFL
A: I would be very glad. In fact, I’m encouraging my son
to play rugby. I believe in learning all different sports codes
and gain knowledge from all. Every code has something to
offer and the most important is building confidence from
playing sports. Sports is such an equalizer and breaks down
barriers.
Design and the mastermind of the art pieces in the
Centre to tell us how the great idea was formed and
translated to reality.
T
he brief was simple: to have a
centrepiece that was inspired by the local
flora and fauna of the Northern Territories.
And the other main parameter was since the
installation was to be fabricated in Malaysia
and then brought over to be assembled
in Darwin, it had to be made of smaller
components that would be put together to
from the full sculpture.
So the installation would be comprised of 3
layers: the 1st layer would be the final form,
which would be made out of the 2nd layer –
the smaller components. And the 3rd and final
component would be the material that would
be used. We wanted all 3 layers to be related
to the Northern Territory and Australia as much
as possible.
For the inspiration of elements, we looked at
the Northern Territory coat of arms: And the
most obvious creature from this coat of arms
for us to choose appear flying above the
patrons of the mall was the regal Wedge-tail
Eagle!!!!
FIRST LAYER_THE WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE
The Wedge-tailed eagle is Australia’s largest bird of prey
with an average wingspan of 2.5m. It is dark brown with a
chestnut neck.
Their long, wedge-shaped tail and broad wings make it
easy to recognise. Their legs are covered in feathers right
down to their feet. A hooked beak and strong talons are
the hallmarks of a bird that hunts other animals.
Although they are found throughout Australia, in the NT
they are more commonly found in the arid centre than on
the coastal plains of the north.
SECOND LAYER_ STURT’S DESERT ROSE
Sturt’s Desert Rose has been the floral emblem of the NT
since 1974. It is an arid plant which grows best in stony or
rocky ground such as dry creek beds.
The Desert Rose has had many botanical names in the
past.
It is a member of the cotton family, rather than the rose
family. It was named after Charles Sturt who first collected
it during his journey to Central Australia in 1844-45.
The plant is found in the southern parts of the Territory, and
is cultivated as a garden shrub in Alice Springs. It can also
be found in parts of South Australia, New South Wales and
Queensland.
It’s a small bushy plant which usually grows to 1.5m. It has
dark green, round to oval shaped leaves. The petals of the
flowers are mauve with a deep red marking at the base.
The flowers look similar to the hibiscus, which belongs to the
same family.
THIRD LAYER_ SASSAFRAS BLACK HEART VENEER
We were looking for veneers from trees indigenous to
the Northern Territory but unfortunately, the veneers from
these trees were too plain. The veneer that had the most
character from Australia was the Sassafras Black Heart,
which is mainly from Tasmania and we felt, that would be
the best option to go with.
Sassafras is famous for its spectacular black-heart stain
caused by naturally occurring wood fungi which produces
a range of contrasting brown to black colours in the
heartwood.
THE ASSEMBLY!!
It took us tens of thousands of man hours over two weeks
with help from colleagues, former colleagues, friends,
partners, family (and some of our kids!) to assemble 2,300
numbers of roses made from about 11,500 big petals and
9,200 small petals cut out from the Sassafras veneer!
These roses were then packed and shipped to Darwin for
assembly. Three of our colleagues were flown to Darwin
and they worked tirelessly for a week to hang up these
roses with fishing lines, paperclips and weighed down with
buttons! to form three massive wedge tailed eagles (with a
wingspan of 13.2 metres each!) hanging over the mall.
or a long time there has been uncertainty
about where the name Coolalinga came
states: Litchfield Shire locality derives its name
from the name used by Lent Cant in the 1970’s
for his Store and Caravan Park on the Stuart
Highway at the 19 Mile. Coolalinga is possibly of
Aboriginal origin, but some say it came about
due to ‘it being a cool place to linger’ - being
close to 29km from Darwin city.
But I believe Len Cant had an interest in horses
and named his caravan park after a horse
called Coolalinga. According to the information
in the Coolalinga newspaper excerp, Coolalinga means
