elcome to the August issue of Pulse! This month, we’re excited to

spotlight some wonderful members of the VIVE team: newly-appointed

general manager, Brent Oliver, and three of our amazing GEX

instructors, Laura Maxson, Sarah Blackburn and Tom Gilmore! You’ll

“hear” from Brent in an exclusive interview, where he discusses his

passion for VIVE, the enthusiasm he brings to his new role and more! In our new “Face to

Face” section, you’ll learn more about Laura, Sarah and Tom, what piques their interests

in the fitness realm and which classes you can take with these motivating, energetic

instructors!

This month, we’re also focusing on flexibility. As such, our Move of the Month, the

Posture T, will help decrease back pain while promoting optimal spine health. You can

read about this invigorating exercise on page 6. We’ve also added a new class to our GEX

schedule that helps to keep aging individuals limber: chair yoga! Leading this exciting

new class will be the newest member of the VIVE family, Ruth Wheeler! For more

information on our chair yoga class, please visit page 3.

Further, we are thrilled to be in the process of designing exciting new programming

and a revamped GEX schedule for the fall. You can rest assured that your

recommendations are being heard, and that fresh offerings are coming to VIVE very

soon! Of course, we won’t give away too much just yet, so you’ll need to

CHAIR YOGA COMES TO VIVE!

We’ve added chair yoga to the GEX schedule

for August, and we hope you’ll join us!

The class will be held directly after VIVE 55

on Mondays and Fridays at 1 p.m.

Chair yoga is designed specifically for gracefully

aging individuals, as it does not require getting

down on the floor. This class will be taught by

VIVE’s newest instructor, Ruth Wheeler. For more

your weekly exercise routine increases flexibility

and muscle tone and promotes healthy relaxation!

Sensible Summer Eating

Watch out for summertime slip-ups! For many, summertime festivities

include parties, cookouts, and vacations, making it easy to fall off track

and lose consistency in regard to your diet. However, summer is the

perfect season to incorporate healthy eating into your daily routine!

Consider these tips the next time you find yourself falling off track:

1. VEG OUT – THE HEALTHY WAY! Work fruits and vegetables

into your diet, using them as snacks, side dishes, and desserts, or

additions to sandwiches, salads and soups.

2. IT’S ALL ABOUT PREPARATION! Bake or broil fruits and

vegetables to capitalize on delicious flavors, or grill them outdoors

to enjoy great tastes and beautiful weather simultaneously!

3. TREAT YOURSELF WITH FARM-TO-TABLE! Indulge in your

own farm-to-table experience by purchasing in-season vegetables

(such as blueberries, strawberries, eggplant, cucumbers, green

beans and peppers) and lean meats from a famers market, since

many open in mid-July.

4. REMAIN MINDFUL! During cookouts, practice portion

control and seek out healthy options to fill up, such as raw fruits

and vegetables.

5. CUT TIES WITH CERTAIN TOPPINGS! Avoid salads made

with mayonnaise and other high-fat condiments.

6. B.Y.O.! Bring your own cuisine to a summertime gathering to ensure

that you’ll have a healthy option to enjoy.

7. DON’T BE AFRAID TO FEEL THE BURN! Stay active during

the beautiful weather to burn off additional calories consumed at

parties and events.

Summertime is wonderful, but it’s easy to sabotage yourself since the

season comes along with so many opportunities to slip up. Take these

tips with you to round out your sensible summer eating and spend

August feeling guilt-free!

MEET VIVE’S

NEW GENERAL MANAGER,

BRENT OLIVER

We’re excited to have Brent as VIVE’s new general manager, and we hope you, our members, share

this same sentiment. If you’re unfamiliar with Brent and his fitness and management philosophies, this

interview will help you get to know him better and pump you up for the future of VIVE!

Congratulations on your promotion to general manager!

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

I’m excited to finally have the ability to listen to the needs

and wants of our members and staff and apply them to

improve this facility. Too often in the past, complaints and

recommendations fell on deaf ears, which is so sad because

comments and suggestions serve as small steps for growth

and advancement. Rest assured, we are tracking every note

placed in the suggestion box and every comment voiced to

our staff, and we are making the necessary changes to adapt

to everyone’s needs as quickly as possible.

For those who don’t know, describe your background and

experience as it relates to working at VIVE.

Like most students, when I was in high school, I wasn’t sure

what I wanted my major to be in college. Then, I was posed

the following question, “If money didn’t exist, and all your

living expenses weren’t a concern, what would you spend

your life doing?” For me, the answer was working out, being

healthy and helping others reach their wellness goals. I went

on to receive my degree in exercise science and immediately

opened my own personal training business after graduation.

I was then hired as a VIVE personal trainer while teaching

exercise science classes at LCCC simultaneously. I became

more and more involved with VIVE and have reached where

I am now as a result of my past experiences.

In addition to serving as GM, you’re also a certified

personal trainer. What’s one piece of advice that you

often give to clients?

I usually find myself telling clients, “It never gets easier,

you just get stronger.” This advice is obviously not meant to

discourage anyone, but rather motivate. It’s not uncommon

for my clients to groan when I give them more weight to

lift than the amount they had in the previous session. If

this happens, I explain that as you become stronger, your

threshold for doing work increases. Getting stronger or

healthier doesn’t mean that you’re suddenly granted the

ability to be lazy and apply yourself less when you exercise;

in fact, the exact opposite is true. To improve in anything,

you need to feel some level of discomfort, whether it be

squatting, studying or public speaking. My personal favorite

quote? “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.”

If you had to choose just one, what has been your

favorite moment at VIVE since you joined the team?

My favorite moment at VIVE would have to be when Diane

told me she had chosen me as the new GM. This isn’t

because of pride, power or money; it’s because VIVE’s staff

can see that it’s possible to grow within the business. I went

from being a personal trainer to coordinator of our medical

fitness program to membership advisor, and now I am

serving as general manger. Everyone who is a part of VIVE’s

team and who applies him or herself has the ability to grow

significantly as a fitness professional.

What are some current trends in the fitness industry?

How is VIVE remaining on-trend and differentiating

itself from other local gyms and fitness facilities?

To be honest, we haven’t been remaining as on-trend as we

would like. During VIVE’s first few years, it was obvious how

new and modern we were, but unfortunately, we became

complacent. Now, being five years old, it’s important that

we don’t lose our shine. Starting this summer, we began to

research new fitness trends and styles. We want to be the

first to bring those trends and styles to this area in order to

actively maintain our on-trend reputation.

You’ve recently launched Dish’d, an entrepreneurial

endeavor with your brother-in-law, Brandon. Tell us

more about what inspired Dish’d, and what this meal

prep program offers.

In the beginning of this year, I started heavily researching

nutrition and the drastic effects that a poor diet has on

the body, including the serious health conditions that can

arise as a result. I improved my diet drastically, but found

myself spending four to six hours every Sunday doing

meal prep for the week. We created Dish’d as a solution to

this problem. Each week, individuals choose from various

healthy meal options and place their orders online; then,

we cook those meals locally and professionally. Those

who placed an order can easily pick it up at VIVE every

Sunday or Monday. Each meal is ready to be microwaved

and the container is 100% decomposable. I strongly

believe that this was the last remaining piece to complete

VIVE’s mission of being a holistic fitness center.

What’s one thing we don’t know about you?

Here’s a good one: Both of my parents are deaf. My dad

was born deaf as an Rh baby, and my mom became deaf

from getting mumps on her neck when she was seven

years old. Amazingly, they both can talk and read lips

very well, so besides having to enunciate my words and

occasionally use sign language, I had a pretty normal

childhood.

VIVE consistently provides new and exciting offers to

members. What’s something they should keep their eyes

peeled for in the coming months?

In early fall, we will be completely redesigning VIVE’s

group exercise schedule. We’re aiming to use the

comments from our suggestion box to design a fuller,

more consistent schedule for our members while also

bringing fresh, new classes to this area.

If you had to describe VIVE’s overall atmosphere

in just one word, what would it be and why?

I would say, “welcoming.” Looking at our member

demographics, we have people from all walks of life here,

from high school seniors and working professionals to

retirees and veterans. From day one, VIVE was designed to

be clean, professional, and welcoming to anyone who has

the desire to become healthier, and I believe we succeed

at those three things.

POSTURE T

This month’s move will set you straight!

Does your job require lots of sitting, driving or a combination

of both? Do you have neck and upper back pain or tension

headaches on a regular basis? If so, the Posture T is a great

exercise to help set you straight! With a little bit of care and

this preventive, corrective move, you’ll begin to eliminate

those aches and pains, stand tall and look better by

refraining from slouching into your stomach when you stand.

Use a light resistance band anchored in front of you at chest

height. Begin with your elbows bent at a right angle and

your upper arms abducted to 90°, so your body resembles a

“T.” Externally rotate your upper arms, keeping your elbows

at a right angle so that you look like a football goalpost.

Hold that position for two counts, then return to the starting

position. Repeat for 10 to 15 repetitions for two to three sets.

Move slowly and deliberately, using the best posture you

can – keep your head lifted and stand tall with your shoulder

blades pulled together and pulled down (imagine putting

your shoulders blades “in your back pockets”). Combine

this with a few stretches for your chest and shoulders, and

you’ll be well on your way to reduced upper back pain and a

healthier spine!

My style of instructing, and I believe my responsibility, is

to educate and motivate! When members take an hour out

of their day to attend your class, it’s important to make it

worth their time and, I hope, make it as fun as it can be!

What is a little-known fact about me?

I am newly married, and my husband and I enjoy

traveling and visiting restaurants featured on Diners,

Drive-ins and Dives!

What do I love most

about instructing?

Having the ability and

opportunity to teach a

well-established and

highly effective practice,

such as yoga, to as many willing students as

possible. This practice has personally taken

me well beyond my highest expectations.

Further, sharing something this productive

gives me a great sense of giving back, and I

treasure the wonderful relationships I have

developed with the students in my classes.

How do I define my style of instructing?

My teaching reflects my passion to share

what I have experienced and learned in

the last 10 years. What a great way to pass

along a lifestyle of wellness!

What is a little-known fact about me?

I have been an avid recreational and

competitive road cyclist for the past 27

years—a true labor of love that has given

me many wonderful memories.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

This unique service makes eating

healthy a breeze and frees you

from spending the weekends meal

prepping! All you need to do is order

your meals from the Dish’d website

once a week, and then they will be

delivered to VIVE for pick up on

Sundays or Mondays. While some

Dish’d offerings will be available

for grab-and-go at VIVE, this service

works best when you order online

ahead of time.

• 1 1/4 cup quinoa, rinsed well

• 3 tablespoons lemon juice

• 3 tablespoons lime juice

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt

• 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

• 1 large (1-pound) English

cucumber, diced

• 1/2 medium red onion, diced

Per Serving: 170 calories (20 from

fat), 2g total fat, 105mg sodium, 31g

carbohydrates, (4 g dietary fiber, 7g

sugar), 6g protein.

1. Combine 1/2 cup fresh mint

leaves (chopped), quinoa, and

2 ¼ cups water in a medium

saucepan and bring to a boil.

Lower heat, cover the pan, and

simmer until quinoa is tender

and a white “tail” appears

around each grain (about 15

minutes). Remove from heat

and let sit, covered, for 5

minutes. Transfer to a medium

bowl and cool.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together

lemon juice, lime juice, honey,

garlic, salt and pepper. Add

quinoa, cucumber, onion and

mint, and toss to combine.
