In the book of 2 Peter 3: 10-11 (KJV) it reads:
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens
shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the
earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought
ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
It is my endeavor to always be prepared. I never want to be negligent when I am
conscious of what could be pending danger. The text is very plain in telling us
of future pending events. Therefore we ought to prepared, and not to live a life
of happenstance. It is vital that with each new day that arises... so should our
preparation to prevail over these peerless times. So with this truth in sight we are left
with the question that the great Apostle Peter posed to us: “What manner of persons
are we to be?”
When we see such dire warnings of what is to take this world... and can not be
avoided... one would question “how do I prepare myself?” The apostle Peter
describes the preparation a person should be making an order to be ready. He talks
about a the “manner of persons” we should be, and the attributes of that person(s).
He challenged us to be those who can have holy conversations, and a live a life
that bespeaks godliness in its true only form... the image of Christ. This now gives
us two challenges to live out on a day to day basis . First, to ignite and invite Holy
conversations in our everyday lives. A conversation that’ Christ centered and edifies
the hearer. Secondly, to live a holy life which requires being mindful of the places
we go, as well as places and people we entertain. Putting everything under the scope
of: “would Christ approve?” So for those that are striving to conquer these two
challenges; understand this principle. The principle of Time. Time is a place for God
to be inserted in every second every hour every day. God shouldn’t be “penciled”
into our lives ... but in fact He’s required to be the permanent factor that should
never be replaced! This, my friend, is called godliness!
So let me end by saying under the great seriousness of the text Peter gave us; let
us not just read it, but be prepared for all that is coming. Become that “Manner of
Person.” Don’t put it off for tomorrow... it’s not promised... but today is - make it
Elect Lady’s Corner
Written by Elect Lady Patricia A. Owens, D.D.
Jesus said to the church in Ephesus according to Revelation 2:4 (KJV): “Nevertheless I
have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love” Which means you lost
something very special that you once loved! I would never want Jesus to have anything against
me. If so, I would get M.A.D. and return to my first love with Him. The acronym for the word
mad is “Making A Difference!” Many times to make a difference you have to get “mad!” Mad
is a passion of the soul. Ephesians 4:26 says: “Be ye angry, and sin not…” You need the kind of
anger or mad that brings about positive results, not fleshly anger that stirs up the flesh or is
based on pride, egotism, and self indulgence. If what you’re doing only benefits you and yours,
it’s not M.A.D.
St John 2:15-17 tells the story of Jesus being M.A.D. to those that were abusing the Temple for
their own gain and not the purpose that it was ordained for. It says: “And when he (Jesus) had
made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the Temple, and the sheep, and the
oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that
sold doves, take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise. And
his disciples remembered that it was written, the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.” Now,
that’s passionately M.A.D.” Jesus said in Matthew 21:13: “… It is written, My house shall be called
the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” Anytime spiritual things lose their
purpose, you should get M.A.D. and the zeal of the Lord should motivate you to do something.
Another example of getting M.A.D. for the work of the Lord is the story of Phinehas, found
in Numbers 25:8-13. The Lord was angry with Israel because they had committed sexual sins
with the women of Moab and had given themselves to the worship of Baal. God sends a deadly
plague among the Israelites and instructs Moses to kill all the leaders in broad daylight, who
led the people into sin to appease God’s anger against them. While Moses and the judges are
carrying out the commands of the Lord, one Israelite man walks in front of Moses and the
entire congregation and goes into a tent with a Midianite woman. But, when Phinehas, the
grandson of Aaron sees the act of rebellion he gets M.A.D. He takes a spear and goes into their
tent and thrust the spear through the man’s body and the woman’s stomach until they die.
The plague then stops after 24,000 Israelites had died. Numbers 25:10 -13 says: “And the Lord
spake unto Moses saying Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned
my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them,
that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto
him my covenant of peace: and he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of
an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the
children of Israel.”
There should be a zeal and passion for the work of the Lord; not serving lukewarm or apathetic,
but serving with a sincere heart. Anytime you make up your mind to get mad for what is right
and what is wrong, you receive God’s favor and “His covenant of peace.” When was the last
time you got M.A.D. and made a stand or made a change for what you knew was not God? You
should not wait another day, but get M.A.D. in serving in the kingdom of God.
Monty: We are going to talk about
the pros and cons of the Mega Church.
Okay, when you hear of mega church,
you think of a lot of people. You think
of big ministries that you see that got
thousands of people. One of the first
recorded Mega churches deals with
Israel. Moses was preaching to millions
of people and literally giving them
what God said. I always wondered
how Moses must have talked to these
people. In my mind, Moses was on
some type of mega horn. Maybe he had
some brothers positioned somewhere
through the crowd shouting it... I
In the New Testament, if you look
in Acts 2, it talks about Peter. When
he spoke and he preached, 3,000
souls were converted that day. In my
mind’s eye, we should have more
mega churches because there are six
billion people in this world, but there
are so many of them lost. To me, it is
God’s 8 will, that we be overflowing.
First of all, I am a huge sports fan. I
love sports. Madison Square Garden is
where the Knicks play. It seats 18,200
people. Yankee stadium seats 50,290
people. Soldier Field, in Chicago,
seats 61,000 people. The University
of Michigan Stadium seats 109,000
people. The Indiana Speedway seats
250,000. All these people will go,
religiously, to all these sporting events
because they have a vested interest, but
they can’t come to church.
Snacks: I agree with you
wholeheartedly. A lot of times, it is
just not having a mega church, and
having these large congregations, but
it is what you have to do to keep them.
You have to water it down, you have
to compromise, you have to make it
palatable for the Democrat, for the
Republican, and for the rich man and
the poor man. So you have to be a
politician of a sort. You have to say
just the right thing to just the right
people at the right time to keep that
membership. The minute you start
getting into how you are living, and
how you should be living... then you
step on some toes and then them toes
start tipping right out the door.
Monty: Without the anointing of
God, it is just a gathering. It is just
getting together and having a meeting
pretty much. I don’t want to act like
there is off stuff in mega churches,
because there is off stuff in little
churches and medium sized churches
as well. With that heavy concentration
of people there, if we be on one
accord, we should see miracles. In
these big churches, the lame ought
to be walking. But, some people are
coming to be seen or for the celebrity
Snacks: I look at it like the difference
between a body builder and a weight
A body builder is building his body and
pumping iron to have his body look a
certain way. His end result is to just to
strike a pose to say look at me... Look
what I got. Whereas, a weightlifter, a
power lifter... these are strong men.
These brothers ain’t necessarily cut. I
have seen them with big bellies and big
arms. are going to say, “I ain’t coming
back” or “I am coming to get right.”
But their ultimate goal is to gain
strength to move something. When you
look at the storefront, they trying to
get a move of God. They are trying to
move in the Spirit. I don’t know if the
Mega church has lost something just
to mask their weight. It is almost like
a form of Godliness, but denying the
Doc: I was just thinking, Lord, what
are some of the common diseases
that have now hit the church? We see
symptoms, but what really is that
one major disease that has attacked
the Mega church? Revelation 3:1
was really giving me some good
understanding. It says, “To the Angel of
the church of Sardis write these saith
he that have the seven spirits of God
and the seven stars. I know thy works
that thou hast a name that thou livest
and art dead.” Really, that is what we
see in the Body of Christ. We see a lot
of people going to church. We see a lot
of singing. We see a lot of conferences.
But honestly, when they scan the
crowd, the preacher just preached
himself into a sweat, it is folk just
standing up smiling. The musicians are
playing their fingers off. Out of about
10,000 people you have about 700-800
poeple really rejoicing.
Doc: Are we looking for power or
do we just have a big name ministry?
I heard a gentleman, a very famous
person; I was just listening to an
interview he did and he was talking
about HIV. He is a member of a certain
church that has now started an HIV
ministry. I’m thinking, back in the day,
the church I grew up in Pentecost,
there was no ministry for liars
anonymous. Pastor would call you out.
The church we are a part of don’t play
with common sicknesses or common
diseases. They get to the root cause
of the problem. Is it a sickness? Does
God really have the power where He
anoints men to lay hands and that God
can heal them? Or are we just a mutual
Monty: If I am in sin, I should not feel
comfortable being in your church. We
are hitting on the mega church because
it is bigger and it is so many people
that you can hide. You should not be
able to sit and be like, I’m running
women, I am on drugs, I smoke weed,
etc. If you go to our church, you are
not doing that. you so much that you
Pastor is going to hit you so much that
you are going to say, “I ain’t coming
back” or “I am coming to get right.”
Snacks: What it really comes down
to is, what did you come here for? Did
you come just to say I came to church
or I was at church? Or did you come
to get delivered? Did you come to get
salvation? Did you come to get closer
to the Lord? Did you just come to say
that I came and I belong to this church
or that church, or did you come for
deliverance? Moses had the first mega
church, but I began to think about
Gideon as well; he had a mega army.
When he called that army he had
32,000 strong, but the minute they got
challenged, the minute they got questioned;
he asked “who is afraid?,” then
guess what? Then they broke up. Then
he broke it down to who can actually
follow; who actually had the true spirit
of the house; who could lap like a dog.
You went from 10,000 down to 300.
So you don’t necessarily need the numbers
to be effective in God’s work.
Doc: I agree. I believe this is just
scripture being fulfilled. As we know,
we are in the last days. The scriptures
say that in the last days, perilous times
shall come. And we see a lot of things
in our church, whether big or small,
on a universal level that a lot of times
you can’t even tell the difference between
the church and what is going on
in the club. They have some of the same
baselines, some of the same music that
I remember when I wasn’t saved. They
just changed the lyrics. I witnessed
to a person, last week, about this and
they made a comment that you don’t
need to go to church. I looked at them
and said, “No, that is not scriptural.”
Because, did not Hebrews say, “Forsake
not the assembling of yourselves
together as the manner of some are?”
So if you don’t need the church, then
how are you going to get to heaven?
Paul was very specific that he gave the
five-fold ministry for the perfecting of
the saints. But what happens when you
come to church and your pastor is really
not giving you sound doctrine?
Monty: Here, what we see in a lot of
those churches, is that “Simon Magus”
stuff to where you are trying to buy
your way in. People of God, we are
not to be impressed by a celebrity that
is in the world. You are talking about
a musician, rapper or things like that,
and they are trying to use their influence
to influence your Pastor to have
little spot. Your money perishes with
you. It starts out with a good thing and
it should be a good thing. This could be
any church, but it is really prevalent in
the Mega church. I gave you all those
statistics about those stadiums. We
ought to have these churches overflowing.
All these people that need to be
saved... but you can’t lose your candlestick.
You can’t get away from what you
have been called to do.

and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16 (KJV)
Highlights of the evening included special appearances from actors David Mann and Tamela Mann (Tyler Perry’s “Meet
The Browns”), and singer Erica Campbell (WeTV’s “Mary Mary”). Additionally, Kirk Franklin was presented with the

I know, I know, children don’t play too many meager games outdoors nowadays. But some of us can
remember those games, right? The ones that required no plug-ins, no batteries, no money… just the
imagination of a child and the freedom to express it. “Strawberry shortcake, cream on top, tell me the
name of your sweetheart…” was a common tune little girls sang in my neighborhood while jumping
rope-Double Dutch style.
I love to ponder the memories of jumping Double Dutch. Now, as a disclaimer, you could not “jump”
if you did not enter the ropes (at least that was our crew’s definition). This is not to be sarcastic-some
girls were humorously guilty of this “hesitancy syndrome.” They would rock forward and back at the
waist with the pace of the ropes, but never jump in! Fear would grip them, making their feet like cement
blocks firmly fastened to the ground!
But some of that fear was justified. It was widely known that extension cords, or heavy thick ropes,
lying around the house was the best choice for that Double Dutch swang. The possibility of those
ropes smacking your face or grazing skin made the act of leaping in nearly impossible for some. Now,
I bet we all can relate to this concept in our walks with Christ. How many obstacles, open doors, lost
relationships or brand new levels that just seemed insurmountable to you? But God said, “Come on,
come on through, jump right in, I’m with you!”
“Tss-tss, tss-tss.. All in together girls, how do you like the weather girls…” I remember coming up in
the ranks, watching how the masters would jump in with such fierce energy and focus. With the right
partnership of turners and jumpers, a solid team was established. The turners were in sync with the
jumpers’ every skip, hop, spin, entry and exit. Any observer could see that there was a recognizable trust
Now, let’s compare a turner-jumper relationship from Double Dutch to the combination of Godly
leaders and the believer. Much like my childhood Double Dutch gang, you will need the help of
individuals, who are in tuned with the highs and lows of your life, in order to be successful. That’s why
God has conduits, called Pastors, Pastor’s wives or First Ladies, and Spiritual Leaders alike. They are sent
to help you navigate through all the many twists and turns that life will “swing” at you-even the tricks of
Boy, do I miss those Double Dutch days! We took this sport and other homemade games as far as our
imaginations would stretch. During these childhood experiences, we acted on a freedom that caused
us to dream up something and know it was possible! Don’t you miss the lightheartedness of being a
kid with that giddy childlike faith? Let’s bring back merriment to our walk with Christ. In your next
stressful season or challenge, check in with the “child” in you. I know you are, if anything else, bound to
have a laugh!

Have you ever wondered how a celebrity can make millions of dollars over the course of their career and have to file for
bankruptcy? I remember my days as a bank teller. Customers would come in to deposit checks and many times I would be
baffled by the status of their accounts. I would encounter doctors, lawyers, business owners, and CEO’s with accounts that
were overdrawn. At the same time, I’d encounter college students and those who worked at fast food restaurants making
minimum wage with accounts that reflected the earnings of a doctor, lawyer or CEO. After helping both categories, I was
often left wondering “how?” How can someone make six and seven figures annually and have an account that’s always in
the red; and how can someone whose income is “poverty level” (by society’s standard) have a flourishing account? I quickly
learned the answer was the same for both; Budgeting. In order for anyone or any company to be financially successful they
must learn how to set a budget and stick to it.
Here are a few budgeting tips to help with financial success and independence:
1. Determine your debt to income ratio. Figure out how much you are earning each month/each paycheck and compare
that to how much you are spending. Ideally, you should be earning more money than what you are spending. If you
find that you are spending more than what you earn, look over your spending with a fine tooth comb and find ways to
minimize your spending.
2. Set goals to pay off debts. If you have a loan or loans and you’ve only been paying the minimum on it, set goals to pay
them off in a timely manner. Meaning, focus on 1 or 2 of the loans and make it a point to pay extra on them for the next
few months until they are paid in full. Once you’ve accomplished that, you’ll feel better about yourself; you have less bills
to worry about; your credit score will increase and you have more money in your pocket or savings account.
3. Be realistic. It’s important to be realistic with your finances. Understand that things will come up in life unexpectedly
and may throw your financial goals off. That’s okay, You have to readjust and refocus on your goals. Just because life
throws you a curveball, that’s no reason to give up and throw in the towel.
1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

For years, I saw her pray. Every morning, every night, every day…and though I too prayed, her prayers were
different from mine. God thought them sublime as those prayers became supplications of how she mourned
for her family, her destiny, for the ability to live life. Her words were skilled and powerful as she uttered them
on bended knee, prostrate, or as she was simply walking. She cried loud till I too heard the secret prayers
she uttered, and through adolescent eyes I admired her zeal with each request, declaration and praise. Then
one day God took my mother home and I had children of my own. Just as I had seen, I allowed my children
to glean from me. I lifted my voice as I prayed for their hearts, so they would never stray. I prayed for God’s
house, the church, as if it were my own. As I too grew, I began to see the legacy my mourning and cunning
mother placed within me. For my daughter and even my sons grew to love the one that I cried to daily for
their sakes and for mine. I wondered if God thought my wailing prayers sublime like my mother before me.
As my hair greyed and my age changed, children moved out and got married; His voice grew louder and so
did my prayers, my desires for a radical change gave me an urgency like I had never felt before. And one day
while I held my grandbaby girl, I prayed as I always did, loud sparing nothing, and those little eyes watched
in delight. Just as mine had so long ago, and some of those mournings to God came back as I realized that my
mother prayed for this. Her cunningness skilled even after death, for she endeavored to pass down this gene
from herself to me and to my seed. Creating a generational covenant of mourning and cunning souls that refused
to cease with their cries to be heard. In that moment I marveled and wept, amazed at how God worked
in mysterious ways.
