NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY
Each year on August 21st, there are various events and activities held
across the United States in recognition of National Senior Citizens Day.
This day was created as a day to support, honor and show appreciation
to our seniors and to recognize their achievements. Their valuable
contributions to our communities create better places to live. On August
19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5847 declaring
August 21st as National Senior Citizens Day. For all they have achieved
throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older
citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate
our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are
good places in which to mature and grow older - places in which older
people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement,
acceptance, assistance and services they need to continue to lead lives of
independence and dignity - President Ronald Reagan.
HOW TO OBSERVE: To celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, spend time
with the senior citizens you know. Let them know that they are appreciated
and loved. It may also be a good day to volunteer at a retirement home and
share your smile with those who may not otherwise get a visitor today.

that may be offered at stores and restaurants in your area.

HOW DO WE LOOK?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home
is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house.
Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a minimakeover.
Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become
overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging
limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is
the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s
opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to
spruce up. Cars that are parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers.
Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better and is
safer for your neighbors and your car.

The Volume of letters sent regarding Violations continues to be an increasing
expense for the Copper Grove Home Owners Association. All expenses
incurred including postage to mail out fines, weigh seriously on the
assessments paid by each homeowner. We request your compliance to help
keep cost to a minimum and to keep our community as attractive as possible.

PET OWNERS
Please be mindful to keep all dogs on a leash when walking them, to keep
the community safe. Also please be respectful of your neighbors and
clean up after your dog. First Service Residential gets a lot of complaints
regarding these issues.

COPPER GROVE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM
Although criminal scams occur at all times of the year, the spring and summer months
seem to have an increase in scams related to unneeded home repairs. Beware of this
type of criminal activity, as it is often perpetrated by individuals who travel from one
community to another - here today, gone tomorrow. Home repair scams often occur
in daylight hours, in which a suspect will walk right into a resident’s home for the
purpose of stealing valuables. Often the victimized homeowner is either in or near
the home. The best way to keep these individuals from victimizing you is to simply
keep your home locked, even if you are just working in the yard. Remember, anytime
you are outside your home, you cannot possibly see every door that a would-be thief
might enter. Traveling home improvement workers have been known to go door-todoor
offering to pave or seal driveways, replace roofing or other unnecessary home
repairs at a very cheap price. The criminal will request payment upfront and prefer
cash, but may also accept a check. The perpetrators of this type of criminal behavior
will often tell homeowners they have materials left over from a previous job and
will give them a discount if they act now. It is recommended to check references
and go through the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to determine the credibility of the
company. Lastly, never pay for work in advance; always pay at the conclusion of the

TEXAS SALES TAX HOLIDAY: AUGUST 11-13, 2017
This year’s Sales Tax Holiday is Aug. 11th-13th. As in previous years, the
law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks
priced less than $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save
shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Be wise! Here are some
tips on maximizing this savings event:
• Compare prices at different stores, which you can do online
• Use coupons - in addition to the tax-free savings - whenever possible
• If you’re using a business account to purchase your tax-free items,
have an exemption certificate to prove you’re shopping for a student
• Shop for more than just back-to-school items, like office supplies and
work clothes or work uniforms

CFISD MENTOR
The CFISD Mentor Program is a cooperative effort of volunteers from
businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community
and the school district designed to encourage students (elementary
through high school) to finish school and focus on future education and
career goals. A mentor is a suitable role model committed to helping a
student with his/her academic and social development. Mentors meet
with students one-on-one for approximately 30 minutes each week.
Currently, over 700 mentors are matched with students. Mentors must
be 18 years or older. To become a mentor, you must attend a training
session, complete a global volunteer/mentor application and consent to
a criminal history record check.

ROSEHILL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
For the second year in a row, Rosehill has been a top contender for the
coveted TAPPS Henderson Cup. The Henderson Cup is a year-long contest
for “Best Overall School” in the state that takes into account all points
accumulated in sports, fine arts and academic competitions throughout
the year. After moving up from TAPPS classification 2A to 3A this season,
RCS knew that the road to the Henderson Cup would be a challenging
task and that the competition in 3A would be very strong. In 2016, RCS
was the State Runner-up in the 2A Henderson Cup sweepstakes by 15
points. For our move to 3A this year, administrators, coaches, students,
parents and teachers joined together to make a school-wide, concerted
effort to win the highly sought-after trophy. RCS collected points by
placing at the state level in a wide array of extracurricular events,
including: State Champions in Baseball (back-to-back), Cheer and Girls’
Track; State Runner-up in Vocal Music; Third place in Academics (State
Champions in Speech) and Dance; Fourth place in Band; Fifth place in One
Act Play and Art; Bi-district Champions in Girls’ Basketball and playoff
points in Volleyball. It was a groundbreaking year and even though we
crushed our point totals from the previous year, RCS ended up placing
third in the overall Henderson Cup competition by a mere three points.
This third place finish was the strongest TAPPS showing by RCS in our
school’s history. Additionally, we were State Champions for the second
year in a row in overall Fine Arts events by over a 30% margin over all
other TAPPS 3A schools. The Henderson Cup is the ultimate team event
and it demonstrates how the body of Christ works. Each part of the body
is important and together those parts serve an even greater purpose.
Though RCS came in third place in the Henderson Cup, we feel like true
winners, because we accomplished this extraordinary goal together.
Furthermore, coming so close to winning will only make us stronger and
more unified as we look to the 2017-18 season.

Besides the Henderson Cup, TAPPS also recognizes the top coaches and
male and female competitors in the state in Athletics and Fine Arts. These
elite honors are extremely difficult to receive, as all TAPPS schools can
nominate competitors from any sport or fine art and the top individuals
in the state are then voted on by an executive TAPPS panel. We are
pleased to announce, that for only the third time in school history, the
TAPPS 3A State Fine Arts Female Student of the Year is our own Ashley
Alexander. Ashley’s 2016-17 TAPPS accomplishments are undeniable:
State Champion in Original Oratory (Speech); State Runner-up In Ready
Writing and 5 th Place in Literary Criticism (Academics); Gold Medal in
Instrumental Piano Solo (Class I); State Champion in Black & White
Photography (Art); State All-Star Crew for One Act Play and she even
served as a state accompanist for TAPPS Vocal Music, not to mention
her TAPPS accolades throughout her high school career in these same
disciplines. Furthermore, Ashley has accomplished all of this while
earning the title of RCS Valedictorian, with a smile on her face and the
love of Jesus in her heart, shining through to everyone who meets her.

how God uses all of your talents as you set sail for the next stage of your

PEANUT BUTTER ICE CREAM PIE
You could make this on National Ice Cream Pie Day August 18 th !
INGREDIENTS:
2/3 cup creamy peanut butter
1/3 cup corn syrup
3 cups crushed sugar-frosted corn flake cereal
1/2 gallon coffee ice cream, softened
2 tablespoons chocolate syrup or to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Combine peanut butter and corn syrup in a bowl, heat in
microwave until it can easily be stirred into a smooth mixture, 1
to 2 minutes. Stir crushed cereal into the peanut butter mixture,
spread into a pie plate to make a crust.
Spoon softened ice cream over the crust and smooth into a flat
layer. Drizzle chocolate syrup over the ice cream layer. Put pie in
freezer and freeze until firm in the center, at least 30 minutes.

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls
ages 4 to 18 for the fall Season. Games start on October 7, 2017. FFPS
is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive
youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas,
FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater
Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including
one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal
playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive
coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

The Northwest Flyers Track Club Youth Cross-Country Team kicks off
the fall season with a mandatory orientation meeting for parents and

The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a member program of USA Track
and Field (USATF), the national governing body for track and cross

Castillo. Students who join FC Cypress can enter one of three different
leagues. Registrations are currently running through September 1 st .
The U6 Soccer School-an 8-week program designed to introduce players
to the sport. Enrollees meet Friday evenings from 6-7 PM to practice
for 30 minutes and play games for 30 minutes. Players in the U7-U10
competitive league - which lasts 13 weeks, enter the Player Development
League hosted by Klein Soccer club at Meyer Park and play against other
teams. Practices take place twice per week at Ollin Athletics. Players in
the U11 Select Academy - players who possess the right attitude and
desire to take their soccer play to the next level. Training sessions will be
twice per week at Ollin Athletics and games on weekends as part of TYSA,
competing against other teams of the same age group and skill level.

Now through September 4 th - Houston Restaurant Weeks - For thousands
of Houstonians and visitors to the bayou city, Houston Restaurant Weeks
provides a month-long passport to the city’s top restaurants and awardwinning
chefs. Houston Restaurants Weeks is run by volunteers and 100
percent of the proceeds raised from area restaurants go directly to the
Food Bank. For more than four weeks, diners get to taste prix-fixe menus
specially priced at $20 for lunch and $35 and $45 for dinner. In addition
to the ever-expanding contribution made to the Houston Food Bank,
the event has grown to include not only the trendiest eateries in Uptown
Galleria, bustling downtown and vibrant Midtown, but also popular
eateries in outlying communities such as The Woodlands, Sugar Land
and Galveston, Texas, among others. A complete listing of participating
restaurants and their respective Houston Restaurant Weeks menus will be

diners seeking to take advantage of Houston Restaurant Weeks, however

Saturday, August 12 th - Galveston Sand Crab 5K and 10K Night Run
benefitting the Galveston Island Humane Society. Start and finish at East
Beach in Apfel Park. Run entirely on sand, the Sand Crab is a great way
to get a little exercise under the stars on a beautiful Galveston Beach at
night and have a few beers and other refreshments while listening to
great music with other runners on a summer night. All races are chip
timed including the Kid’s Mile. The Kid’s Mile will start at 8 PM. Parents are
welcome to run with kids free of charge. The 5K/10K will start at 8:30 PM.
The 5K run is very walker friendly with a 2 hr cut off. The 10K is walkable
but will share the 2 hr cut off. 10K runners must be at the 3.1-mile
turnaround within 1 hour. The Sand Crab starts on beautiful East Beach
and runs west for 3.1 or 1.55 miles (depending on the event). Then turns
back to the finish. The course is lit with led lights. Runners are required
to run with a flashlight or head lamp. There are 2 watertops with sports
drink and water hit 2X each for the 10K and 1 hit 2X for the 5K. For more

CAMP CORNERSTONE
Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp sponsored by Cornerstone United
Methodist Church and is for children ages 2 through the completion of 4 th grade.

ANNOUNCES REQUESTS FOR VOLUNTEERS
OCTOBER 14-15, 2017
The Art Colony Association, Inc. (ACA) is in need of volunteers for Bayou
City Art Festival Downtown on Saturday and Sunday, October 14-15,
2017. Volunteers have the option of choosing various roles and shifts for
either or both days. Shifts for Friday afternoon and evening will also be
available for artist check-in and festival load-in.
The festival offers volunteers the opportunity to make new friends and
meet artists from around the country. After every shift, volunteers will
be entered in a raffle and have the chance to win prizes, including gift
cards to local restaurants, movie and museum tickets. All volunteers will
receive a t-shirt and be able to enjoy the festival at no cost before and
after their shift. The minimum age to sign up is 13 and group volunteering
is also available. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can sign up

Bayou City Art Festival will be held under the iconic Houston Downtown
skyline, 10 AM - 6 PM. The festival will spotlight more than 300 artists from
19 different disciplines and benefit local non-profits. Online tickets are
on sale now until the day of the event at www.artcolonyassociation.org.
Tickets online are $12 for adults and $5 for children 6-12; children five
and under are free. Tickets at the gate are $15 for adults. Also available
online are two-day passes for $20 and family passes (two adults, two
children tickets) for $30. Discounted tickets for Veterans and Seniors will
be available at the gate.

CYPRESS HOSPITAL SEEKING VOLUNTEERS
Memorial Hermann Health System recognizes the vital importance of
volunteers and the newly opened Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital
is no different. The hospital is now taking applications for its volunteer
program. Volunteer tasks range from working at the front desk, to
nursing unit assistance, helping discharge patients and much more.
Dozens of volunteers have already joined the program, but there are
more spots available. Four-hour volunteer shifts are available seven days
a week from 5 AM to 9 PM. Adults are asked to complete an application

Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to
providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages
living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in
that we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and
rabbits as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan.
Being a non-profit organization, we are constantly looking for extra help
around the farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all
high school and college-aged students interested in working with both
children and animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or

PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with
necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have
to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last
a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a
program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living
(PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted
by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held
at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by
local businesses.

FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned
Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can
no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with
local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care
and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened,
forever homes.
DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide
temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need,
currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM
continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm
prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food,
water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The
“love” just comes naturally.
