Recycling IQ
Program
Continued from page 1
material. This may not sound like much,
but if every household in Newburyport
failed to recycle just two pounds every
week (a conservative estimate!), it is close
to $32,000 tax dollars wasted each year.
But there are other even greater financial
incentives for doing all we can.
Next year, both the City’s collection and
trash disposal contracts expire. The city’s
recycling office will spend a great deal of
time crafting a scope of work document
to go out to any interested parties to bid
on. One key component to how much (or
little) prospective vendors will bid is the
amount of contamination in our recycling
and the amount of recycling in our trash.
Recycling “purity” is a major issue for
fines and safety. Recyclable material in
trash is a major issue for fines. This grant
will educate residents, enforce ordinances,
and enable Newburyport to have a better
bargaining position when our solid waste
contract comes up next year.
“The timing for this program is perfect.
By improving our recycling by both
recycling everything we should in our
single-stream curbside collection and
nothing that we shouldn’t, we will have
a much better opportunity to get better
rates when our contract is negotiated this
winter. By participating in this program,
we show that we are committed to
compliance with DEP regulations and
our collectors and haulers will not face
the potential of fines for our loads,” said
the Mayor.
How to Savor a Perfect Summer Day, In Verse
Amesbury - The Whittier
Home Association and Tapestry of
Voices invite you to its 19th annual
poetry of John Greenleaf Whittier
4:30 p.m. The poetry readings will
take place in the Victorian garden
of the Whittier Home Museum, 86
“There’s something wonderful
about being able to listen to the
words of a prominent 19th century
poet on a lazy Sunday afternoon in
August,” says Chris Bryant, president Last year’s Tapestry of Voices Lineup: L. to R. Edith Maxwell, Chris
of the Whittier Home Association, Bryant, Gus Reusch, Bill Plante Jr., Claire Breger-Belsky, Lainie
“We hope that people from all over Senechal, Harris Gardner, Michiko Nemoto, Alfred Nicol, Izumi
will join us in Whittier’s habitat Nemoto, Cynthia Costello, Toni Treadway, Rhina P. Espaillat
and listen to the free flow of his
thoughts, the simplicity of his structure and his expression of old New England life.”
The program will feature readings of Whittier’s poetry as well as original works. Awardwinning
Newburyport poet Rhina P. Espaillat, who has published poems, essays, short stories
and translations in numerous magazines and over sixty anthologies, will share Whittier’s
“Response” as well as one or two of her own short poems.
Other featured poets include Harris Gardner, founder of the poetry organization Tapestry
of Voices, who will read “The Voices,” Lainie Senechal, the first Poet Laureate of Amesbury,
will read “Stanzas for the Times”, and two of her own poems, “To Mr. Whittier,” and “The
Hummingbird in Whittier’s Garden.” Alfred Nicol will read “The Rendition,” “Don’t Let
Them In” by Saladhin Amed, and “Empathy” by A.E.Stallings. Poet Toni Treadway will read
“What of a Day,” and Paulette Demers Turco will read Whittier’s “How the Women went from
Dover” and her own poem, “She had to Leave.”
Local Whittier aficionado Skye Wentworth, has chosen to read “Tents on the Beach,” Gus
Reusch, curator of the Whittier Birthplace/Museum, “The Christian Slave,” Chris Bryant,
president of the Whittier Home Association, will read “The Yankee Girl” and Peter Bryant “In
School Days.”
This year, we’re pleased to include the exceptional talent of our young-and-upcoming local
poets. Reading their original poems are the winners of Whittier Home’s 2nd Annual “Gathering
of Verses” Poetry Contest Angela Messina and Isabelle DaRosa, students at the Whittier
Regional Vocational High School. Each will respectively read their award-winning poems,
“Malignant,” and “Sunshine.” Thomas Frame, a third-grader at Sparhawk School and winner
of Amesbury Library’s Poetry Contest, will read his winning poem, “The Holy House.”
An informal reception with light refreshments will follow the readings. In the event of
inclement weather, the program will be held in the Whittier Home’s meeting room. Admission
is free and open to the public. For more information, call Harris Gardner, (617) 306-9484 or
Chris Bryant, (978-388-8888).
